Another rant on post-Diwali pollution on the internet! I know you have had enough, and so have I. &nbsp;

On Thursday night, sitting on my terrace, I was watching fireworks and saw a fog of broken promises and burned paper.&nbsp;

For many, Diwali is all about light, family and celebration. But for people like me, who struggle for a clean breath in this city, it was a sleepless night.

My generation, the so-called 'Gen-Z', was raised with an eco-consciousness mindset. But now, we simply watch each festival multiplying as a countdown to climate catastrophe.

<h2>Data Speaks Louder (When You Listen)</h2>

Let’s not skip the numbers.

On the morning of November 1, a day after Diwali, Delhi's air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 359. On the night, it was recorded around 500, according to the real-time data provided by the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR).&nbsp;

In 2023, Delhi's AQI was recorded as high as 301 on Diwali, according to the data published by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC).

<h2>Noise of Ignorance</h2>

While growing up, I was taught Diwali is a "festival of lights," but being born and brought up in Delhi, it's more a "Festival of Frights" for me. Every year, I witness my neighbourhood erupting with crackers and turning homes into gas chambers.&nbsp;

<h2>Government That Bans For Headlines</h2>

"Nothing Hindu-Muslim in ban on firecrackers in Delhi," said the chief of Delhi's ruling party Arvind Kejriwal on October 30, six years after the Supreme Court of India imposed a ban on all conventional crackers in Delhi-NCR.&nbsp;

He said the so-called ban on crackers was necessary for protecting people from pollution and that there was no 'Hindu-Muslim' angle to it.

Kejriwal urged the people of Delhi to celebrate Diwali by lighting diya (Earthen lamps), instead of bursting firecrackers that cause pollution.

But, after making headlines on national and international levels, did the ruling party cross-check if the instructions were being followed?&nbsp;

No, they certainly didn't. There was no patrol, no checks, only the silence of those in power. It's not hard for one to feel that the ban was for the optics, just for the international media so they can defend themselves saying they "tried."

But let’s be honest: a ban without enforcement is just another noise.&nbsp;

The government’s policies lack teeth, and the reality couldn’t be more obvious. A report by the Times of India published on October 27 revealed that buying a packet of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR is as easy as buying a packet of milk.&nbsp;

<h2>Generation Z: aware but defeated?</h2>

My generation knows what's at stake. We see the data on pollution, and we see the "severe" AQIs, every year.&nbsp;

We grew up learning lessons on recycling, eating eco-friendly food. But we are powerless, in front of a culture that's reluctant to change and a government that refuses to enforce its own rules.&nbsp;

What's stopping us from not giving a single thought about an entire population suffering because of something we do "just for fun?" Tradition or habit? No idea! Because when it comes to inhaling toxic air, that distinction doesn’t matter.

<h2>Need for real change</h2>

It's easy to play the blame game. After all, tradition is a powerful thing. But we are those who claim to be the generation of change. If we don't stand up, if we don't speak up, who will?&nbsp;

I am not asking people to forgo Diwali traditions. But what impact will it create if we opt for alternatives that don't fill our lungs with soot? I think, huge.&nbsp;

<h2>'Green' to go?</h2>

Mohandas Pai, the former CFO of Infosys and the chairman of Aarin Capital Partners in an interview with Wion, suggested that opting for green crackers could be a solution to post-Diwali pollution.&nbsp;

But are "green crackers" feasible?

The Times of India report said the green firecrackers, which are produced without barium, are almost impossible to distinguish from normal ones. One can have the hardest time identifying them and can be easily misled.

<h2>What now?</h2>

How about simply celebrating the festival without explosions? How about celebrating Diwali the actual way it was celebrated for the first time in Ayodhya? Let's stick to the tradition. Let's speak up loud enough to be heard over the blasts of ignorance.

When crackers speak louder than laws, what's the Gen Z doing?

Following the Diwali festivities, Delhi has witnessed a dramatic decline in air quality, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) soaring into the severe category. Authorities are urging residents to take precautions as smog and pollution levels pose serious health risks.

Delhi's Air Quality Plummets to Severe Levels Post-Diwali

Pollution levels in Delhi spiked on Wednesday (October 30), a day before Diwali, bringing air quality back into the “very poor” category, raising concerns of worsening pollution during the festival when firecrackers are burst across Delhi-NCR.

Pollution levels in Delhi spiked on Wednesday (October 30), a day before Diwali, bringing air quality back into the “very poor” category, raising concerns of worsening pollution during the festival when firecrackers are burst across Delhi-NCR. How did the AQI change in the lead-up to Diwali? According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, Delhi’s AQI rose to 307 by 4:00 PM on Wednesday, up from 268 (poor) at the same time the previous day. By 11:00 PM, it had further deteriorated to 317. Every Diwali, the Capital is filled with the sound of firecrackers, despite strict restrictions on their production, sale, and use. Enforcement measures appear largely ineffective. Firecracker emit harmful chemicals, such as barium, sulphur, and lead, combined with already high pollution levels and smoke from crop stubble burning. Are firecracker bans being followed? Signs of the firecracker ban being ignored emerged as early as Wednesday evening, as explosions were heard around the city, lighting up the sky in defiance of the regulations. Also read: Ayodhya's record-breaking Diwali: City lit up with 2.5mn diyas, drone shows So far this winter, Delhi’s AQI has yet to reach the “severe” level. The highest reading, 364, was recorded on October 23. What are AQI levels and how is air quality classified? The CPCB categorises AQI levels from 0-50 as “good,” 51-100 as “satisfactory,” 101-200 as “moderate,” 201-300 as “poor,” 301-400 as “very poor,” and above 400 as “severe.” What does the forecast say for post-Diwali air quality? The Early Warning System (EWS) for Delhi forecast on Wednesday that air quality would likely remain in the “very poor” category from October 31 to November 2, with the potential for reaching “severe” if firecracker and stubble burning emissions increase on October 31 and November 1. Have previous firecracker bans reduced post-Diwali pollution? In recent years, attempts to restrict firecracker use, including an outright ban since 2020, have been largely ineffective, often leading to a sharp increase in AQI post-Diwali. For seven of the last eight years, air quality worsened significantly the day after the festival. Last Diwali, on November 11, Delhi’s AQI was 220 (poor) a day before, improving slightly to 218 on Diwali itself, before surging by 140 points to 358 (very poor) the next day due to firecracker activity in the evening. Authorities are to carry out mechanical or vacuum sweeping and water sprinkling on identified roads every day. Water sprinkling and dust suppressants are to be sprayed on roads at least every alternate day during non-peak hours to control the dust, especially in heavy traffic areas and hotspots. Proper disposal of the collected dust at designated sites or landfills is to be ensured. Regular inspections are to be done at construction sites to ensure strict enforcement of dust control measures. Authorities are to ensure focused actions to control air pollution in identified hotspots and take measures to address the causes of each hotspot. Adequate personnel are to be deployed at intersections and traffic congestion points to ensure a smooth flow of traffic. The frequency of bus and metro services is to be increased. Uninterrupted power supply is to be maintained to avoid the use of generators. (With inputs from agencies)

GRAP Stage II implemented in Delhi-NCR to combat pollution. What does it mean?

Delhi’s air quality has dropped to the ‘poor’ category, urging the authorities to implement Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has enforced the restriction in the entire National Capital Region (NCR).

According to the latest recorded Air Quality Index (AQI) bulletin by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the national capital has recorded a concerning daily average AQI of 234, forcing the governments to implement measures to curb pollution in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

“The Sub-Committee unanimously decided that all actions as envisaged under Stage-I of GRAP—‘Poor’ Air Quality (DELHI AQI ranging between 201-300)—be implemented in right earnest by all the agencies concerned, from 8:00 AM on October 15 in the NCR,” CAQM said in a statement.

According to the air quality standards, there are six categories: good (0-50), satisfactory (51-100), moderate (101-200), poor (201-300), very poor (301-400), and severe (401-500). AQI above 300 is considered hazardous and can lead to health issues.

<h2>What is GRAP 1?</h2>

Authorities will enforce a 27-point action plan in Delhi and the neighbouring areas to tackle the problem and improve the city’s air quality.

Under Stage 1 of GRAP, restrictions will be imposed on construction and demolition activities to control dust. It will also focus on proper waste disposal and ban open burning of waste.&nbsp;

Restrictions will also be implemented on diesel generators and the burning of coal or firewood at eateries. The plan will also aim to control emissions from industries, brick kilns, and power plants.

GRAP also includes strict monitoring of vehicular pollution and improved traffic management.

Delhi government has also imposed a ban on the production, storage, sale and use of all kinds of firecrackers till January 1.

In November 2023, the government imposed a level 4 of GRAP in Delhi NCR after the air quality worsened to ‘severe’.

According to the statement, government agencies including Pollution Control Boards (PCBs) of NCR states and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) are ordered to ensure strict implementation of the State-1 GRAP. The citizens are also urged to cooperate with the restrictions.

The Commission will be conducting regular air quality reviews in the coming days to monitor the situation, the statement said.

<h2>Stubble burning</h2>

Farm fires remain another challenge to tackle the situation of pollution in the national capital region. According to reports, 872 stubble-burning incidents were recorded between September 15 and October 13 in Punjab, further deteriorating the air quality in Delhi and nearby areas.

Last year, 1,230 such incidents were reported during the same period, making this year’s count the lowest in five years. However, there has been a considerable increase in farm fire cases from 300 cases as of October 7, according to CREAMS-Indian Agricultural Research Institute.

With Diwali and winter approaching, Delhi’s pollution levels are expected to soar in November. Delhi’s Environment Minister, Gopal Rai, has urged immediate action, including the use of cloud seeding, to address the city’s serious air pollution problem. Rai has appealed to the central government to convene an urgent meeting with key parties to expedite the approval process for cloud seeding, a technique aimed at curbing the anticipated rise in pollution levels during the winter. “We have already experienced a delay of approximately one month in the efforts for cloud seeding in Delhi and with air quality likely to deteriorate to ‘hazardous’ levels by early November, I once again request you to immediately convene meetings with all relevant stakeholders,” Rai wrote in his letter to Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav. This year, during the monsoon season, Delhi experienced 62% more rainfall than usual, with Safdarjung, the city’s primary weather station, recording 1029.9mm. While heavy rains typically help reduce pollution by washing away the topsoil, the average PM2.5 concentration in Delhi and parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) was the highest seen during this period since 2021, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). Also read: 200 kg cocaine worth $238mn seized in Delhi, days after $667mn drug bust Last year, the Delhi government considered cloud seeding as a method to address pollution, with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur advocating for its potential advantages. However, progress has been slowed by delays in obtaining necessary approvals from central authorities. Cloud seeding involves artificially generating rainfall to remove pollutants from the atmosphere and has been suggested as a temporary solution to the city’s persistent smog, the letter said. “We are prepared to take up cloud seeding to combat air pollution, but we need clearances from central departments to proceed,” Rai said, urging the Union Environment Minister to facilitate a meeting with all stakeholders to speed up the approval process. Experts suggest that pollution could be managed by inducing artificial rain through cloud seeding, a weather modification process that uses silver iodide (AgI) to assist the formation of ice crystals, enhancing the cloud’s ability to produce rain. IIT Kanpur has a specially modified aircraft equipped with cloud-seeding technology to carry out this operation. (With inputs from agencies)

Indian Supreme Court Thursday (Oct 3) chided the governments of Punjab and Haryana states for not doing anything substantial to tackle the pollution problem. The top court also criticised the states for collecting just nominal compensation from farmers engaging in stubble burning, which annually causes lethal, toxic air pollution in Delhi.

The apex court also rebuked the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), which is tasked with controlling pollution in and around Delhi.

The bench comprising Justice A Amanullah and Justice AG Masih said, "Everybody knows that except discussion nothing is happening. That is the harsh reality of this."

This comes after the Supreme Court ordered CAQM last week to file a detailed affidavit on steps being taken to tackle stubble burning in the neighbouring states of Haryana and Punjab, key farming hubs in northern India. The bench highlighted how the committee met only thrice in the past nine months and there was no discussion on stubble burning at all.

“The last meeting was on August 29. Entire September, there was no meeting. You said that this committee consists of IPS officers etc who will enforce the directions. Now not a single meeting has been held after August 29 when it comes to enforcement," Justice Oka said.

"Is this the seriousness which is being shown?" the judge asked.

The government’s counsel then argued they didn’t take drastic measures because the pollution level had reduced.

"You must implement your own orders. This is all in the air. There are targets, action plans, sectoral meetings but the basic provisions of the Act are not be implemented at all. ‘Nothing is happening,’ SC rebukes Haryana, Punjab over Delhi’s pollution problem

A recent study published in the journal Lancet Planetary Health has revealed that even short-period exposure to air pollution levels meeting the Indian standards can result in deaths. About 33,000 deaths each year can be attributed to PM 2.5 pollution levels across 10 major cities in India.

The study was conducted between 2008 and 2019 in cities including Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, Varanasi, Kolkata, and Shimla. Delhi recorded the highest number of deaths which can be attributed to air being 11.5 per cent of the total deaths, about 12,000 every year. Varanasi recorded 10.2 per cent of the deaths, 830 every year.

The states meeting the national standards also witness numerous death cases attributed to pollution each year. Chennai, Bengaluru, and Shimla recorded about 4.8 per cent (2,100), 4.9 per cent (2,900), and 3.7 per cent (59) of total deaths each year, respectively.

The national standard set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for PM 2.5 particles is 60 micrograms per cubic metre, while WHO states only 15 micrograms per cubic metre in its guidelines. PM 2.5 particles are fine particles of pollution with diameters generally about 2.5 micrometres or smaller.

The researchers studied the data obtained from meteorological instruments, air quality monitors, satellites, and other sources to examine the PM 2.5 pollutants exposure over time. They compared the air quality data with the death records obtained for the 10 cities for the same period.

According to the researchers, the nature of sources of pollution and population may have resulted in a higher number of deaths in cities like Delhi, Varanasi, and Kolkata. However, the main objective of the study was not to compare the numbers but rather to emphasise the need to understand that relatively even low levels of pollution have a significant impact on people's health in the country.

“The insights signal an urgent need to revisit our air quality management strategies that currently focus only on ‘non-attainment cities’, rethink current air quality standards accounting for the lower risk thresholds, and shift from addressing regional to local sources to protect human health effectively,” said Poornima Prabhakaran, director of the Centre for Health Analytics Research and Trends (CHART) at the Trivedi School of Biosciences, Ashoka University, one of the authors of the research.

The Sri Lankan cricket team manager Mahinda Halagonda dismissed media reports claiming the 1996 champions had requested the ICC to shift the match to another venue on Sunday (November 05). Most of the Sri Lankan players wore masks when they arrived at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the afternoon.

"We didn't make a request to change... We just asked them what's the plan," Halagonda told reporters.

Both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh had already cancelled one practice session in the build up to Monday's (November 06) match between eliminated Bangladesh and seventh-placed Sri Lanka, who have only the slimmest of chances of reaching the last four.

"I think they have installed some equipment here, and they've got specialists to check (the air quality). …. They have already informed us that they are planning to go ahead. So we will do exactly what the ICC actually tells us to do."

Heavy pollution-fuelled smog has forced authorities in Pakistan’s most populous province, Punjab, including the eastern city of Lahore, to close markets and schools. The government in the province announced a four-day public holiday in several districts to mitigate the impact of smog.

<h2>What is&nbsp;Punjab government’s plan?</h2>

The provincial government has announced a public holiday from November 9 to 12.&nbsp;

“The government has decided to close down markets for four days from 9 to 12 November in the major cities of Punjab because of smog on the advisory of the health department,” said Amir Mir, the information minister for Punjab.&nbsp;

According to a directive from the provincial government, schools, offices, restaurants, and businesses aside from priority services like pharmacies, hospitals and courts, would all close to limit residents’ movement outside.&nbsp;

Heavy pollution-fuelled smog has forced authorities in Pakistan’s most populous province, Punjab, including the eastern city of Lahore, to close markets and schools.

Heavy pollution-fuelled smog has forced authorities in Pakistan’s most populous province, Punjab, including the eastern city of Lahore, to close markets and schools. The government in the province announced a four-day public holiday in several districts to mitigate the impact of smog. What is Punjab government’s plan? The provincial government has announced a public holiday from November 9 to 12. “The government has decided to close down markets for four days from 9 to 12 November in the major cities of Punjab because of smog on the advisory of the health department,” said Amir Mir, the information minister for Punjab. According to a directive from the provincial government, schools, offices, restaurants, and businesses aside from priority services like pharmacies, hospitals and courts, would all close to limit residents’ movement outside. Pakistan: Punjab govt declares four-day holiday due to pollution-fuelled smog; schools, markets closed

As New Delhi's pollution crisis escalates, Supreme Court of India strongly criticized both state and central governments. The top court condemned the 'murder of people's health.' So who is responsible for the air pollution crisis in New Delhi? Here's a report.

Gravitas: New Delhi's battle for breath: Who is responsible for 'murder of health'?

Smog in Delhi during the winter season has become an annual affair. Despite policy interventions and immense debate over the years, there have been no signs of improvement in the kind of air the people breathe in the national capital.

There are a variety of factors that contribute to the deteriorating air quality in Delhi. Smoke from farmers burning crop stubble, vehicle exhaust and factory emissions combine to form a toxic concoction that remains stranded in the lower part of the atmosphere during the winter season.

Out of this, two causes have largely grabbed the limelight: stubble burning and Delhi’s cold temperature.

<h2>Dip in stubble burning&nbsp;</h2>

A new analysis done by Climate Trends, a Delhi-based research institute, has revealed that stubble burning—which largely takes place in the agricultural states of Punjab and Haryana—has actually seen a drop in the past two years.

It has indicated that Delhi’s meteorology might have played a major part in Delhi breathing toxic smog this year.

Using NASA Earth VIIRS data to count farm fires and wind and temperature profile data from CPCB reveal that there has been a 47.8 per cent reduction in farm fires in Punjab and a 38.04 per cent reduction in Haryana between 2022 and 2023 for the period Oct 1 to Nov 5.

Of this, Sangrur district has performed better in Punjab with 46 per cent reduction, from 4,287 fire counts in 2022 to only 2,295 fire counts in 2023.

<h2>Wind direction contributing to smog in Delhi?</h2>

Analysing the wind trajectory data reveals a strong correlation between the wind direction originating from Punjab and Haryana and the resulting pollution levels in Delhi, the study states.

The wind carries pollution from Punjab and Haryana to Delhi 81 per cent of the times, based on the wind trajectory for October 2023, the study notes.

"Air pollution in Delhi is again hovering in the severe to emergency category with AQI levels crossing 400. Our analysis shows that the delicate balance of wind speed, year-round air pollution, and seasonal stubble burning all have a role to play in creating this annual cocktail of noxious gases. 81% of the wind in Delhi these days is from Punjab and Haryana,” Aarti Khosla, Director, Climate Trends, said.

“While the farm fires data from Punjab and Haryana reveals a substantial reduction by 47.8% and 38.04% respectively, against data for October 2022, but since volume of wind from the region is so high, it brings the undesirable impact of heavy pollution,” she added.

“We can also clearly see the meteorological impacts with wind breeze having a big role to play in combination with local sources- construction dust, traffic pollution and small scale industries,” she said.

She said that the government must keep a year-round check on polluting sources of power plants, industries, traffic and construction

“Also rainfall, wind speed and temperatures impact regional and local air pollution levels. Emissions from human-induced activities have to be controlled strictly at source to reduce the influence of meteorology on the national capital's&nbsp;air&nbsp;quality," Khosla added.

Is stubble burning the sole reason for Delhi’s poor air quality? A new study reveals otherwise

The hazardous air quality in northern part of India where the winter is beginning to set in amid a rampaging increase in stubble burning activity continues to be a major health threat for the lives of millions. The air quality is as bad as smoking 30 cigarettes a day, according to a senior Delhi-based health expert widely cited in the media.&nbsp;

But the burning of stubble, the waste of the harvested crops in the vast farmlands of Punjab and Haryana states in northern India, continues despite efforts by authorities to control the menace. Amid this raging health crisis, shocking visuals of an official in Punjab's Bhatinda being forced to burn the stubble. The official was present at the site to enforce the regulations in-place to stop the stubble burning in the first place.&nbsp;

The incident came to light after Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, a leader of Aam Aadmi Party,&nbsp;posted a video on X and denounced the act.

"Dear Punjabi, what paths did you take??... The government employee went with the message not to burn stubble but (you) started fire from him," Mann wrote on X, while stating that the Sikh Gurus had solemnised air, and interpreted it as disrespect to the faith.

India's national capital Delhi is bracing for the smog in winters in coming two months, and considering this CM Arvind Kejriwal has come up with a 15 points plan to deal with air pollution. Kejriwal said 13 hotspots have been identified across the city where pollution level is high and an action plan is made for each. Thirteen special teams have been also formed.&nbsp;

Some of the hotspots are Anand Vihar, Wazirabad, Vivek Vihar, Wazirpur, Ashok Vihar, Dwarka, Jahangirpuri, Rohini, Bawana, Narela, and Mundka.&nbsp;

<h2>Delhi's winter action plan</h2>

Last year bio-decomposer was used to prevent stubble burning in 4400 acres, this year it will be used more widely, the CM said.

Bio-decomposer, developed by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), is a microbial solution that can turn paddy straw into manure in 15-20 days.

"To reduce dust pollution, 591 teams have been formed to monitor construction sites. Sites more than 500 square metres will have to register on the web portal and it will be mandatory for sites more than 5000 square metres to install anti-smog guns," the chief minister added.

<h2>Vehicle pollution to be measured</h2>

To curb pollution caused by petrol and diesel vehicles, 385 teams have been formed which will operate 530 water sprinkling vehicles and 258 anti-smog guns on the roads in winter.

Pollution related complaints can be made on the Green Delhi app and about 70,000 complaints have been filed already, of which 90 per cent have been dealt with, Kejriwal added. A website has also been created to track the real-time pollution levels.

Delhi air pollution: CM Arvind Kejriwal drafts 15-point winter action plan

For past many years, as temperatures edge to hit winter in norther India, the air quality in India's capital New Delhi and adjoining National Capital Region becomes either worse or at best one of the worst in the world. To combat the hazardous air quality during winters, the specified anti-pollution body has revised Graded Response Action Plan.&nbsp;

"The Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR &amp; Adjoining Areas (CAQM) has taken significant efforts to abate air pollution and strategically address the air pollution related challenges across different sectors in the region," an official readout stated.&nbsp;

The revision comes as authorities learn new lessons on air quality management 'based on the experience and learning of last year'.

<h2>Graded Response Action Plan in Delhi-NCR</h2>

In Delhi, the GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) categorises adverse air quality into four stages:

Stage I - 'Poor' (AQI 201-300)
Stage II - 'Very Poor' (AQI 301-400)
Stage III - 'Severe' (AQI 401-450)
Stage IV - 'Severe Plus' (AQI greater than 450)

The updated GRAP now suggests strict adherence to Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal orders regarding older diesel and petrol vehicles under Stage 1.

Additionally, it proposes a ban on coal and firewood usage in eateries, restaurants, and hotels once the AQI crosses the 200 mark. Previously, this measure was implemented under Stage 2 (AQI above 300).

For Stage 2, the revised GRAP recommends rigorous actions to combat air pollution at identified hotspots in the region.

Under Stage 3, states are required to impose strict restrictions on BS III petrol and BS IV diesel four-wheelers in certain areas and may suspend physical classes in schools for primary grade children up to Class 5.

When the AQI exceeds 450, four-wheelers registered outside Delhi, except for electric vehicles, CNG vehicles, and BS-VI diesel vehicles, will not be allowed to enter the city, with some exemptions for essential commodity transport and essential services.

All other existing measures under different stages of GRAP will continue. Delhi and its neighboring areas often experience a layer of pungent haze during peak winters due to unfavorable meteorological conditions and stubble burning.

India's anti-pollution body revamps action-plan to combat air quality in Delhi-NCR

Air quality index (AQI) in India's capital city has plummeted again, and Delhi has returned to breathing polluted air. Meanwhile, there has been a spike in the cancer-causing pollutant PM 2.5. It penetrates the lungs and causes chronic respiratory illness.&nbsp;The PM 2.5 level in Delhi's air is nearly 100 times above the safe limit, as per World Health Organisation.

Despite the measures taken by Delhi authorities to monitor pollution levels in India's capital city, the air quality remains shoddy. As per predictions, the air quality is likely to worsen in Delhi, due to which authorities have set more restrictions.

The officials at the Met office in Delhi said the double whammy of a poor air quality and ongoing severe cold wave will only add to the woes and Delhi's air quality will hover in the 'very poor' category&nbsp;over the next three to four days.

As per the Centre's air quality panel, CAQM, the air quality in the dark red zones of Delhi will plunge in the upcoming days. Moreover, dense fog, calm winds, and low temperatures will accompany inferior air quality.&nbsp;

CAQM has banned coal's industrial usage and has asked them to swap it for cleaner fuel. But people frequently use fuels like biomass and metallurgical coke in India's capital city.

Due to the deteriorating air quality in Delhi, people are also questioning CAQM's Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). On January 4, CAQM relaxed tight restrictions quoting the predictions by the Indian Meteorological Department and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology.

Although the ban on coal is effective, the administration must look into a regional clean-up of Delhi, reports say. Such measures will help the industries benefit from their switch to natural gas.

Air quality in India's capital city Delhi plunges, spike in lung cancer-causing pollutants

The air quality in India’s national capital New Delhi remained in the “poor” category on Thursday, according to weather forecasters. The city has been adjudged the most polluted in the world in recent times.

According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), the Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi was at 249 on Thursday.

A day before, the air quality was at 'moderate' category. If the AQI is between 0 and 100, it's considered good; 100 to 200 is moderate; from 200 to 300 is poor; and from 300 to 400 is very poor.

If the AQI is above the 400 mark, then the air quality is considered severe and poisonous.

The onset of winter season brings down the quality of air every year in Delhi. A thick shroud of smog engulfs the entire city and nearby National Capital Region at this time.

The stubble burning by farmers from neighbouring Punjab is considered to be the prime culprit for the unbreathable air in Delhi.

The air quality in the national capital is so bad that data released by the World of Statistics has been declared Delhi to be the most polluted city in 2021.

The World of Statistics on November 16, 2022, shared a list of “Most Polluted Capital Cities 2021” according to which the national capital is sitting at the top in the list of 10 capital cities.&nbsp;

The data, which takes into account the air quality till November 2022, was released on November 14.

As per the list, here are the top 10 cities&nbsp;which have been declared the most polluted.

1. Delhi

2. Dhaka

3. N’Djamena

4. Dushanbe

5. Muscat

6. Kathmandu

7. Manama&nbsp;

8. Baghdad

9. Bishkek

10. Tashkent

For several years, Delhi has been grappling with air pollution. Several knee-jerk measures were taken, such as banning construction activities and using smog guns, but with no successful results.

According to a WHO survey of 1,650 world cities, and a survey of 7,000 world cities by the US-based Health Effects Institute in August 2022, Delhi’s air quality is dubbed the worst in the world.
