<p>In the wake of new strains of coronavirus infection, the government of India has announced the stringent approach to detect new COVID-19 variant and made it mandatory for identified high-risk countries, United Kingdom (UK), Middle East, and Europe, the testing labs at Indira Gandhi International Airport have a monumental task in hand.</p>

<p>"Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) in consultation with the Ministry of Civil Aviation reviewed the situation with regards to the point of entry actions required to minimize the risk of importation of mutant strains of SARS-CoV-2. The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) shall be valid w.e.f. from February 22," MoHFW Guidelines said.</p>

<p>The testing process has suddenly increased about 10-fold; earlier about 500-700 international passengers were being tested per day, the lab is now staring at 7,000 plus numbers.</p>

<p>While the lab infrastructure is equipped to even test above 15,000 samples per day, the operations team comprising data entry operators and sample collection technicians had to be increased 10 folds to handle the large inflow of passengers from the UK, Europe, and the Middle East.</p>

<p>"A massive recruitment drive was launched immediately after the SOP was announced and over 200 staff was recruited overnight and trained over the next two days," Genestrings lab said.</p>

<p>As per record reported at the airport's peak hours, it was identified that between 3 am to 5 am, there will be roughly 1,200 passengers an hour who will undergo mandatory RT-PCR testing.</p>

<p>"It is a very brave and timely decision taken by the government to control a new wave of COVID-19 cases in the country. We are fully prepared and will ensure a smooth experience for all passengers who will be quite anxious," said Dr Gauri Agarwal, Director of Genestrings Diagnostic labs.</p>

<p>Genestrings lab is the only lab at Indira Gandhi International Airport that was the first lab in the country to set up an arrival testing facility in September 2020.<br />

Delhi: Passengers suffer as flight gets delayed due to bad weather

<p>The minimum temperature was recorded in the Aya Nagar area near Gurugram at 2 degrees Celsius, 0.1 degrees more than the temperature it witnessed on Saturday. The maximum temperature was recorded at 12.2 degrees Celsius.</p>

<p>In the morning, the minimum and the maximum temperature were oscillating between 3.4 degrees Celsius and 13.3 degrees Celsius in Safdurjang area of the national capital.</p>

<p>Palam was also reeling under a cold wave in the wee hours with the minimum temperature being recorded at 3.2 degrees Celsius and maximum 11 degree Celsius, according to the IMD.</p>

<p>In Lodhi Road area, the temperatures hovered between 2.8 and 13.9 degrees Celsius.</p>

<p>"The average duration of delay is of 197 minutes," airline`s spokesperson had said.</p>

<p>The server glitch at 3.30am forced the state-owned carrier to re-schedule 18 flights to reduce the inconvenience of the passengers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Very few aircraft are departing and that too on the basis of their size, visibility and ATC (air traffic control) clearance for taking off," the official said.</p>

<p>At the Delhi airport, the minimum runway visibility required to take off is 125 metres.</p>

<p>The airport was facing low visibility conditions since 4 am due to dense fog.</p>

<p>"The visibility significantly improved between 9.20 am and 10.20am. This allowed us to resume departures properly from 10.20 am onward," he said.</p>

<p>Vistara Airlines tweeted at 8.23am, "Due to dense fog and poor visibility in Delhi, delays are expected for both arrivals and departures with likely consequential impact on flights across the network."</p>

<p>"Currently, flight departures from Delhi are on hold and will resume by 0930 hrs subject to weather clearance," it added.</p>

<p>In these, 402.48 kilograms of gold, valuing Rs 113.83 crore, were seized and 262 persons were arrested, the statement issued by the customs said.</p>

<p>There were 57 cases of smuggling of foreign currencies during the year, in which forex worth Rs 22.27 crore were seized. A total of 38 persons were arrested in these cases, it said.</p>

<p>In 2017, there were 215 cases of gold smuggling at the Delhi airport. The customs officials seized 242.5 kilograms of the yellow metal in these cases and arrested 143 people.</p>

<p>In 35 cases of forex smuggling during 2017, a total of 18 persons were arrested and foreign currencies worth Rs 10.75 crore were seized.</p>

<p>"A comparative analysis reveals that there was a 58 per cent increase in the number of gold smuggling cases booked which resulted in a 65.90 per cent increase in the quantity of smuggled gold seized," the Delhi customs said.</p>

<p>Similarly, a 62.85 per cent increase in the number of foreign currency cases booked resulted in a 107.05 per cent increase in the value of foreign currency seized, it said.</p>

<p>"The increase in gold smuggling cases show that people still consider it as a safe investment option. There is a strong need to deter people's love for gold," a senior customs official said.</p>

<p>There was also seizure of narcotics at the Delhi airport in the last year.</p>

<p>"Whereas there were no cocaine seizures during 2017, three foreign nationals were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, during 2018.</p>

<p>These cases involved the seizure of 2.35 kilograms of cocaine worth approximately Rs 13.50 crore in the international narcotics market," the customs department said.</p>

<p>The partial runway closure and subsequent cancellation of flights at the Delhi airport have led to a sharp rise in last-minute average fares with rates on some key sectors shooting up to 86 per cent amid high weekend travel demand, industry experts claimed Friday.</p>

<p>Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), the private aerodrome operator, had early last month announced closure of one of the three runways for "preventive repairs" for 13 days, starting November 15.</p>

<p>It also told the airlines to tweak their flight schedule accordingly.</p>

<p>On Friday evening, several travel portals showed a sharp rise in spot airfares.</p>

<p>There was an increase in fares from Delhi to Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai and other destinations for the next one week, especially November 16-19.</p>

<p>While the fare for a Delhi-Bengaluru flight on normal days stand around Rs 11,044, for travel on Saturday (November 17), it stood at Rs 13,702 on average, according to the data by travel portal Ixigo.</p>

<p>One travelling to Mumbai from the national capital on Saturday would have to spend Rs 11,060 as against Rs 9,228 on normal days, as per the portal.</p>

<p>The cancellation of flights from the Delhi airport due to the closure of the runway (09/27) has led to an increase in fares for the next one week, said Aloke Bajpai, chief executive and co-founder, Ixigo.</p>

<p>"Another contributing factor is the high travel demand over the upcoming weekend. We have seen an average increase of 86 per cent in air fares for flights from Delhi to key routes such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Chennai," Bajpai said.</p>

<p>Besides 09/27, the Delhi airport has two more runways -- 11/29 and 10/28 -- which remain operational. The three runways together handle 1,300 flights per day.</p>

Thousands of bags get misplaced at Delhi airport

<p>In a joint operation, the special cell of Delhi Police and Gujarat ATS arrested a suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba&#39;s (LeT) terrorist Bilal Ahmed Kawa at Delhi airport for alleged involvement in the terror attack on Red Fort in the year 2000, police said.</p>

<p>The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism squad informed the Delhi Police today that one Bilal Ahmed Kawa, who had been declared a proclaimed offender in the case, was travelling from Srinagar to Delhi</p>

<p>The terrorist was handed over to the Special Cell of the Delhi Police. Questioning of the suspected terrorist is underway. &nbsp;</p>

<p>He was involved in the suicide attack on Red Fort in Old Delhi.</p>

<p>Three people, including two Army jawans, were killed in the December 22, 2000, Red Fort attack.</p>

<p>Delhi woke up to a heavy blanket of smog and high levels of air pollution surpassing the hazardous mark on Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The decreasing temperature and dense fog have caused&nbsp;low visibility resulting in service disruption of trains and flights in the national capital.&nbsp;</p>

<p>More than 40 flights were diverted and more than 90 flights were affected at the Delhi airport on Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Operations at the&nbsp;airport were on halt until 11 am and have now been resumed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Northen areas of Delhi such as Shadipur has been recorded&nbsp;at 387(hazardous) following RK Puram at 350 (hazardous) on the air quality index.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the fog condition today is expected to remain dense and continue till tomorrow.</p>

<p>The minimum and maximum temperature are likely to hover around 7 and 22 degrees Celsius respectively.</p>

<p>On Friday morning, north-western plains, including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh, were covered under&nbsp;dense fog.</p>

<p>S Bhojwani was apprehended at about 3:40 am yesterday when the CISF personnel, deployed for airport security, found him roaming suspiciously inside the Terminal-3 (T3) building of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), a senior official involved in the airport security said.</p>

<p>Bhojwani told the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel that he had entered the terminal to see off his wife, who was travelling to Moscow, the official said, adding he told them that he used a cancelled ticket to enter the airport.</p>

<p>The man was subsequently handed over to police, he said.</p>

<p>Entering airport terminal without a valid ticket is illegal under Indian aviation rules.&nbsp;</p>
