The United States recorded 63,262 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, according to a tally by the Johns Hopkins University on Tuesday.

The total number of cases recorded in the country since the start of the pandemic now exceeds 3.42 million, according to the Baltimore-based university.

COVID-19 also claimed 850 new victims in the United States in the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 136,432, according to the institution's tracker at 8.30 pm Tuesday (0030 GMT Wednesday).

US clocks up another 63,000 virus cases in 24 hours

Golf's Taiwan Masters was cancelled Wednesday because of the coronavirus pandemic, casting doubt over the planned September resumption of the Asian Tour season.

The long-standing, $950,000 tournament was scheduled to tee off at the Taiwan Golf and Country Club from September 17-20, the same week as the rescheduled US Open at Winged Foot.

It was the second of three Asian Tour events announced last month to get the COVID-ravaged season back on track after a six-month suspension.

But the tournament was scrapped because of health and safety concerns and travel restrictions on players living outside Taiwan, the tour announced in a statement.

The Taiwan Masters is one of Asia's oldest continuously played professional golf events, having first been held in 1987, and has been an Asian Tour fixture since it was first sanctioned in 2004.

The Asian Tour, which has been suspended since American Trevor Simsby won the Malaysia Open on March 7, still hopes to return at the $1.181 million Shinhan Donghae Open from September 10-13 in South Korea followed by the $1.4 million Panasonic Open in Japan from September 24.

The last of golf's three leading men's circuits to announce a return to action, the Asian Tour is faced with a complex international schedule that involves players from more than 25 countries crossing borders for each tournament.

The US PGA Tour has already made a successful return, without spectators, and continues this week when Tiger Woods ends his own coronavirus sabbatical by starring at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio from Thursday.

The European Tour resumed in Austria last weekend with a low-key event shared with the second-tier Challenge Tour and will get fully back in the swing with six events in Britain from next week, beginning with the British Masters in Newcastle.

Australia's Wade Ormsby, who won the Hong Kong Open in January, leads the fledgling 2020 Asian Tour Order of Merit but only four tournaments have been completed.

A Canadian university may just have developed a face mask that neutralises the coronavirus in a matter of minutes.

According to a press release, the test conducted by researches has ascertained that wearing the particular mask deactivated the virus responsible for COVID-19 disease.

The mask is already in production and is made by a local manufacturer based in Quebec.

"Deactivates the virus"

Called TrioMed Active, the mask can reportedly “deactivate” a whopping 99 per cent of the virus in less than a minute or two.

Many medical professionals have recently shed light on how infected masks, or to be more precise, the outer covering of the masks may be responsible for the spread of the virus to some extent, especially if it is not disposed carefully.

According to Pierre Jean Messier, the CEO, the company had been working on mastering antimicrobial technology for years before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and claims to have invested millions of Dollars into its development. The mask has a shelf life of five years.

University of Toronto approves mask capable of neutralising 99% of coronavirus

All earlier notions of wearing masks have been dispelled as studies point out the importance of face coverings in prevention measures against COVID-19. In fact, wearing a mask can reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19 by 65 per cent!

Two doctors from the UC Davis Children’s Hospital, in a livestream event pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic stressed on the importance of wearing a face mask.

Precautions save lives!

Dean Blumberg, the chief of infectious diseases at the hospital, during the livestream asserted how we must tread with caution, for we simply don’t know who may be carrying the virus. “We don’t know who might spread COVID-19”, he said.

Blumberg mentioned how social distancing alone can reduce the risk of catching the deadly virus by 90 per cent, while masks come a close second with a 65 per cent reduction in risks. "We do know social distancing reduces the risk of transmitting the virus by 90 per cent, and wearing masks decreases the risk by 65 per cent”, he said.

It has been well established that COVID-19 spreads through droplets and aerosol particles released by infected people, which then latch on to potential hosts, and set off a chain of infections which spike very easily.

The two doctors claimed that the droplets may be very small, about “one-third the size of a human hair”, but are detectable by us.

Wearing masks is not a belief system

“Everyone should wear a mask. People who say, ‘I don’t believe masks work,’ are ignoring scientific evidence”, Blumberg said. He further claimed that "It’s not a belief system. It’s like saying, ‘I don’t believe in gravity’.”

The doctor further shed light on how easily the virus is transmitted among people in the absence of face masks. “People who don’t wear a mask increase the risk of transmission to everyone, not just the people they come into contact with. It’s all the people those people will have contact with.... You’re being an irresponsible member of the community if you’re not wearing a mask”.

Another way the virus spreads is through aerosol particles thrown out by the infected people when they’re talking. These are the real culprits of fast infections, for they are “1/100th the size of a human hair”, making them difficult to spot and avoid.

Dr Ristenpart said, Studies in laboratory conditions now show the virus stays alive in aerosol form with a half-life on the scale of hours. It persists in the air”. Recently, another group of scientists asserted how the virus spreads rapidly and may be airborne in nature, calling the WHO to rethink its understanding of the virus.

The World Economic Forum has endorsed the scientific consensus that wearing masks cuts down the risk of infections by 65 per cent.

For the sake of global health and the development of effective treatments, we need to end the political pretense that the coronavirus pandemic was a naturally-occurring outbreak and ascertain its true origin.

For many, the thought of a highly infectious and deadly man-made virus being released from a laboratory is too psychologically horrible to contemplate -- not to mention its catastrophic political and economic ramifications.

Nevertheless, the issue is no less than one potentially affecting the survival of mankind, if not honestly addressed.

Until now, objective scientific inquiry has been hampered by China’s refusal to fully disclose the information it possesses. In addition, Beijing has conducted a politically-motivated scientific disinformation campaign to avoid responsibility -- one facilitated by some Western scientists with a vested interest in the outcome and by an uninformed and servile media.

That includes, ostensibly, censorship by scientific and medical journals, conducted under the guise of editorial discretion -- a policy which seems to favour, overwhelmingly, the Chinese Communist Party’s narrative that the pandemic is just another naturally-occurring transmission from animals to humans.

In a new scientific study, “The Evidence which Suggests that This Is No Naturally Evolved Virus,” the authors explain, that SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, possesses structural and biochemical features not present in other coronaviruses.

“The properties that we now see in the virus, we have yet to discover anywhere in nature. We know that these properties make the virus very infectious, so if it came from nature, there should also be many animals infected with this, but we have still not been able to trace the virus in nature.”

The authors identify several unique features of SARS-CoV-2 that strengthen the case for purposeful manipulation in the laboratory.

SARS-CoV-2 has six unique amino acid insertions that create a dual binding and cell entry system that could explain the observed multiple clinical effects. They compromise the functions of olfaction and bitter/sweet receptors, blood cells, immune response, nerve cells and various tissues, such as the cells lining the intestines.

The spike protein, responsible for viral binding and cell entry, also appears “pre-adapted” for human infection, which is even present in the first COVID-19 patients. This indicates that SARS-CoV-2 did not undergo the human adaptation process normally seen in animal to human transmissions.

Artificial modifications, such as those described, could present serious obstacles to producing effective and safe vaccines.

The authors further elaborate about how, where, when and by whom SARS-CoV-2 may have evolved through experiments in laboratories.

The authors identify specific scientific publications by Chinese and American researchers, in which they demonstrate and discuss how coronaviruses have been genetically manipulated to produce new viral entities that are potentially more infectious and deadly for humans.

Given all the available data, the likelihood that SARS-CoV-2's structure and properties are the result of a natural evolutionary process is very small.

Those who support China’s narrative, therefore, need to account for the unnatural characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 and provide more convincing evidence before demanding acceptance of the yet unproven theory of natural occurrence.

COVID-19: Scientific disinformation is, quite literally, killing us

North Macedonia went to the polls on Wednesday in a tight parliamentary election where the winners will face a surging coronavirus outbreak and the start of talks to join the European Union.

It is the first parliamentary election since the Balkan country added "North" to its name early last year, ending a decades-old dispute with Greece.

The accord ushered the country into NATO and opened the door to the EU.

But critics are still bitter about conceding a part of their national identity to appease Greece, which claims exclusive rights to the name Macedonia for its own neighbouring region.

The election pits an architect of the deal, Social Democrats leader and former prime minister Zoran Zaev, against the deal's harsh critics VMRO-DPMNE.

Neither is forecast to win an outright majority, setting the stage for complex coalition talks after the results, which are not expected until early Thursday.

The coronavirus pandemic has added another layer of uncertainty as authorities try to slow an infection spike without inflicting further damage on an economy already heading into recession.

With more than 380 deaths among a population of around two million, the country has the highest per capita fatality rate in the Western Balkans, according to official data.

Voters wore mandatory masks as they lined up at polling stations in the capital Skopje, which opened at 0500 GMT and will close at 1900 GMT.

LOW TURNOUT EXPECTED

The country has been run by caretaker cabinet since Zaev stepped down six months ago following the EU's initial failure to start accession talks in exchange for the name-change and other reforms.

The bloc's members later gave the greenlight in March, though the country is still waiting for a start date.

The snap poll was intitially scheduled for April, but the pandemic forced a postponement, extending the term of a caretaker cabinet that has struggled to manage the coronavirus crisis.

As a second surge of infections gains ground, health fears threaten to weaken turnout.

"We should have waited until this crisis had passed," said Skopje resident Ostoja Garac.

Zaev has been trying to sell his success in moving the country closer to the West but the nationalist opposition accuses him of "treason" for the deal with Greece and another treaty with Bulgaria.

"Zoran Zaev for us Macedonians is really a nightmare, but for some of our neighbours he is a long awaited dream," VMRO-DPMNE's nationalist leader Hristijan Mickoski told a campaign rally.

Analysts say the party's return to power could damage relations with its neighbours and complicate looming EU accession talks.

"A potential VMRO victory will negatively affect not only the EU path, but also the overall foreign policy of the country," said Elena Stavrevska, a researcher with the London School of Economics.

And yet many voters are unsatisfied with the centre-left Social Democrats, amid a perception that "they have not delivered on some of the key promises, including justice reforms", Stavrevska told AFP.

PANDEMIC SLOWDOWN

Meanwhile a traditional kingmaker party, the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) which represents ethnic Albanians, is demanding their candidate be prime minister in exchange for an alliance.

Both Zaev -- who has allied with another smaller ethnic Albanian party -- and Mickoski have dismissed the demand as "blackmail".

But it is not clear if either main party could secure a majority without DUI's help.

"With a large part of the electorate likely not voting and many undecided, there are too many moving parts to be able to predict what election day will bring," Stavrevska said.

On the horizon is a pandemic-triggered slowdown that will deepen woes in one of Europe's poorest economies, where the average monthly salary is 420 euros ($477).

And many have already lost faith in the political class with both sides routinely accused of corruption.

"Bearing in mind that nothing has changed since I was born, I expect nothing (from the election)," said Stefan Micevski, a young person in the capital.

PANDEMIC SLOWDOWN Meanwhile a traditional kingmaker party, the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) which represents ethnic Albanians, is demanding their candidate be prime minister in exchange for an alliance.

The United Kingdom has officially made the usage of face masks compulsory across shops and supermarkets in England.

Starting next week, face coverings will be mandatory in all shops, citing risks of a second-wave.

Face masks were made mandatory on public transport on June 15. On Tuesday, this will be formally extended to shops and supermarkets.

"The Prime Minister has been clear that people should be wearing face coverings in shops and we will make this mandatory from July 24," PM Boris Johnson said in a statement.

“There is growing evidence that wearing a face covering in an enclosed space helps protect individuals and those around them from coronavirus," the statement added.

If shopkeepers or shoppers are seen without a mask, they could face a fine of over $123 (100 British Pounds). The police will oversee the enforcement of this rule.

Second-wave fears?

If a second-wave were to infect people across the country, over 120,000 could die over nine months. A health expert called this the worst-case scenario.

Britain faces a harsh winter, with people usually staying inside and spending more time in closed spaces, which could set the ground for the virus to resurface.

Could air pollution be contributing to a spike in the number of COVID-19 infections? This analysis claims there is “compelling” evidence.

The study, which took into account over 20 factors ascertained how air pollution in one particular area causes more infections, and also more admissions and deaths in hospitals.

Major spike!

Any long-term exposure to polluted air can trigger over a 10 per cent spike in infections, and over 15 per cent increase in the number of COVID-related deaths.

Co-morbidities have a major role to play in the fatality of most coronavirus cases. The researchers took into account factors like age, obesity, household size, population density, occupation, etc.

The study, based mostly in the Netherlands corroborates the evidence of infection rates and its link to pollution from Europe, the US, and China. It is in fact fundamentally very different from the Euro-centric studies, for most pollution in the Netherlands takes place not in big cities, but in the suburbs, where most livestock farming takes place.

This cancels out the commonly held belief that high air pollution and cityscapes go hand-in-hand. According to scientists, this could help identify and contain cases in potential hotspots, where the pollution levels are the highest.

Making minor cases fatal

The basic rationale behind this is the fact that air pollution could make even minor cases fatal, for it inflames the lungs and adds on to respiratory woes, which may get complicated after long-term exposure to pollution coinciding with one contracting the deadly virus.

Air pollution also significantly adds to heart disease, putting them at more risk of death.

The research was undertaken by a group of scientists at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, and has been reviewed by independent scientists.

The team was able to find a “positive relationship” between air pollution and coronavirus cases.

A similar study earlier undertaken by Harvard University had claimed how an eight per cent increase in COVID-related deaths could be attributed to a single-unit increase in the fine particle pollution.

The researchers also took into account the “Netherlands carnival”, where people meet in the livestock farming regions. It is here that the number of coronavirus infections remain the highest, probably due to the high levels of ammonia emitted by the animals.

They also looked at factors like smoking, average income, and education level.

Argentina is trying to solve a medical mystery after 57 sailors were infected with the coronavirus after 35 days at sea, despite the entire crew testing negative before leaving port.

The Echizen Maru fishing trawler returned to port after some of its crew began exhibiting symptoms typical of COVID-19, the health ministry for the southern Tierra del Fuego province said Monday.

According to the ministry, 57 sailors, out of 61 crew members, were diagnosed with the virus after undergoing a new test.

However, all of the crew members had undergone 14 days of mandatory quarantine at a hotel in the city of Ushuaia. Prior to that, they had negative results, the ministry said in a statement.

Two of the other sailors have tested negative, and two others are awaiting test results, the province's emergency operations committee said.

Two sailors were hospitalized.

"It's hard to establish how this crew was infected, considering that for 35 days, they had no contact with dry land and that supplies were only brought in from the port of Ushuaia," said Alejandra Alfaro, the director of primary health care in Tierra del Fuego.

A team was examining "the chronology of symptoms in the crew to establish the chronology of contagion," she said.

The head of the infectious diseases department at Ushuaia Regional Hospital, Leandro Ballatore, said he believed this is a "case that escapes all description in publications, because an incubation period this long has not been described anywhere."

"We cannot yet explain how the symptoms appeared," said Ballatore.

The crew was placed in isolation on board the ship and returned to the port of Ushuaia.

Argentina exceeded 100,000 total cases on Sunday, and the death toll rose to 1,859. The majority of infections are in the Buenos Aires area.

Britain faces a potentially more deadly second wave of COVID-19 in the coming winter that could kill up to 120,000 people over nine months in a worst-case scenario, health experts said on Tuesday.

With COVID-19 more likely to spread in winter as people spend more time together in enclosed spaces, a second wave of the pandemic "could be more serious than the one we've just been through," said Stephen Holgate, a professor and co-lead author of a report by Britain's Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS).

"This is not a prediction, but it is a possibility," Holgate told an online briefing. "Deaths could be higher with a new wave of COVID-19 this winter, but the risk of this happening could be reduced if we take action immediately."

The United Kingdom's current death toll from confirmed cases of COVID-19 is around 45,000, the highest in Europe. Including suspected cases, more than 55,000 people have died, according to a Reuters tally of official data sources.

The AMS said there is a "high degree of uncertainty" about how the UK's COVID-19 epidemic will evolve, but outlined a "reasonable worst-case scenario" where the reproduction number -- or R value -- rises to 1.7 from September 2020 onwards.

The R value -- the average number of people an infected person will pass a disease on to -- is currently between 0.7 and 0.9 in the UK and daily case and death numbers are falling. An R value above 1 can lead to exponential growth.

A Texas man who waited until his brain tumor was softball-sized; a baby who suffered an ear infection for six days; a heart patient who died: The resurgence of COVID-19 is creating another health crisis as hospitals fill and patients are fearful or unable to get non-emergency care.

With U.S. coronavirus infections reaching new heights, doctors and hospitals say they are also seeing sharp declines in patients seeking routine medical care and screenings - and a rise in those who have delayed care for so long they are far sicker than they otherwise would be.

"I had one lady who had delayed for five days coming in with abdominal pain that was getting worse and worse," said Dr. Diana Fite, who practices emergency medicine in Houston. "When she finally came in, she had a ruptured appendix."

After the pandemic was declared a national emergency in March, many states banned non-essential medical procedures, and the number of patients seeking care for other ailments took a nosedive. Hospitals and medical practices were hit hard financially.

Emergency department use dropped by 42% during the first 10 weeks of the pandemic despite a rise in patients presenting with symptoms of the coronavirus, data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show. In the same period, patients seeking care for heart attacks dropped by 23% and stroke care by 20%.

As the initial outbreak leveled off in the weeks that followed, healthcare experts planned to handle primary care differently should infections rise again, making sure minor procedures like cancer screenings were still allowed and assuring patients that hospitals and clinics were safe.

But the recent surge in cases has swamped hospitals in many states, including Texas, Arizona, Florida and parts of California.

CANCER MORTALITY RATES

Texas has again banned many non-emergency procedures, though cancer surgeries are still allowed, and a hospital in California's San Joaquin Valley for several days admitted only COVID-19 patients.

Patients without COVID-19 - either out of fear, confusion or because of difficulty in obtaining the care they need - are again staying home.

The result is a healthcare crisis in the making, said Austin oncologist Dr. Debra Patt, who said she expects mortality rates from cancer to skyrocket in the years after the pandemic because patients have delayed their care.

"They're scared to go in the hospital unless they absolutely have to," said Patt. "And even when the patients are willing, it's hard to get things done."

Patt said screening mammograms are down by 90% in Austin, where she specializes in breast cancer and serves as executive vice president of Texas Oncology. That means some tumors will be missed, and women who develop aggressive cancers might not know about it until the disease is more advanced and more likely to be deadly.

"It's an impact we will see on cancer survival for years to come," she said.

Dr. David Fleeger, a colorectal surgeon in Austin and a past president of the Texas Medical Association, said he has had numerous patients cancel colonoscopies in recent days.

"The delays in colonoscopies that are occurring right now ultimately will lead to more cancers and more deaths," he said.

'IN A HOLDING PATTERN'

Patt's patient Helen Knost had to put off surgery for breast cancer in early spring because it was considered non-emergency in Texas and barred at the time, and she was treated instead with the medication Tamoxifen.

"It's very strange to know you have cancer and you're just hanging out with it, just in a holding pattern," said Knost, who did ultimately undergo successful surgery.

In California, doctors at the 150-bed Adventist Lodi Memorial Hospital in the San Joaquin Valley breadbasket were determined that a second surge in coronavirus cases would not bring a repeat of the pandemic's early days, when emergency room visits dropped in half. Emergency medical technicians also reported a 45% rise in the number of heart patients who died before they could be brought to the hospital.

Hospital CEO Daniel Wolcott led a campaign to inform the community that the medical center was open and safe, even speaking to people about it in the grocery store.

But with new COVID-19 cases swamping the hospital, sickening nearly 30 staff members and forcing it to divert non-coronavirus cases to other facilities for several days, Wolcott fears that again patients with heart conditions and other illnesses will stay away.

"We won't know for years how many people lost their lives or lost good years of their lives for fear of coronavirus," he said.

New US health crisis looms as patients without COVID-19 delay care

Venezuelans who left their country following an economic collapse over four years ago are now being forced to return in view of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

According to data from the UN Refugee Agency, over five million Venezuelans had fled their country since 2016. Owing to the economic collapse, poverty was on the rise, and no infrastructure In place to keep health and social services running.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has left no country untouched, and its fallout in already struggling countries will be felt way more than others.

Deliberately infected?

However, returning migrants may not be accepted back into their country. On June 11, the embattled President Nicolas Maduro claimed that many migrants were being purposely infected with COVID-19 and sent from other countries to wreak havoc in Venezuela.

As of now, only 1,000 migrants can reenter the country every week.

Government data suggests that between March and June, over 56,000 migrants had crossed back into the country. However, Colombian authorities claim that 60,000 have ventured back through Cucuta alone since March. Over three million Venezuelans had earlier marched through this border leaving their country behind in search for better employment opportunities.

United Kingdom recently allowed businesses to resume activity after over three months of lockdown. As part of this move, pubs, hairdressers, and eateries have been allowed to reopen.

However, as experts warn of a harder second-wave of COVID-19 infections in autumn and the months following it, businesses are taking extra precautions to maintain social distancing.

A pub in Cornwall, UK installed an electric fence to ensure people maintain social distancing, and that they stay away from the bartender. This comes in after a police chief from the UK had said last week, “drunk people cannot socially distance”.

The owner of the pub spoke to CNN and told them how it was necessary to ensure distancing among people, especially considering drunk people are more susceptible to forgetting about the virus once they’re intoxicated.

Countering previous claims of young being less susceptible to catching COVID-19, a new study has posited that one in three young adults are now at severe risk of contracting the virus.

The study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health also added how the risk of catching severe diseases is also dependent on one’s smoking habit. Earlier, scientists believed smokers are at a higher risk, but were also not sure of its direct impact, as much of the detail is still unknown.

Smoking a major factor

A survey was conducted by the National Health Interview Survey, whereby 8,000 participants between the age group of 18-25 were assessed based on the risk indicators carved out by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These included smoking and health conditions. Researchers at the University of California looked at these assessments.

Out of the participants, over 32 per cent were vulnerable to developing a severe version of COVID-19. However, as soon as the researchers eliminated non-smokers out of the assessments, the risk of severity dropped by half, to 15 per cent.

In the smokers category, men are at a higher risk of developing severe symptoms. Women, on the other hand, had a higher risk in the nonsmoker group.

The lead author of the study, Sally Adams, claimed that “smoking is associated with a higher likelihood of COVID-19 progression”, which could translate into severe illness.

Surprising racial inconsistency

Additionally, in terms of race, the researchers found a surprising detail. According to them, white young adults aged between 18-25 also had a higher risk of developing severe symptoms, which is inconsistent with earlier research suggesting that higher rates of COVID-19 and being a racial/ethnic minority were related.

Have you been thinking that acquired immunity might save us all from coronavirus? You might be wrong. According to a new study, patients who have recovered from COVID-19 are susceptible to losing their immunity just a few months into the recovery.

Next common cold?

The research claims that the virus could become the next common cold, and resurface every year among people, causing reinfection. As part of the research, scientists observed more than 90 patients in the United Kingdom under the supervision of healthcare workers at an NHS facility.

They observed the response of the immune system to the level of antibodies one develops after one contracts the virus. Based on this, the researchers realised that the antibodies peaked three weeks after catching it, and then tremendously declined.

According to blood tests, 60 per cent people who got the virus developed a strong antibody response to the virus, while only 17 per cent of the same pool held on this strength three months after getting the virus.

The researchers found that the antibody levels fell by 23 times during the time. In fact, many stopped showing antibodies after a while. This finding may challenge the idea of a “herd immunity” and might complicate the development of a vaccine.

Strong infection = more antibodies

The authors of the study found that even though patients had developed a considerable antibody response to the virus, it disappeared over a short period of time. Dr Katie Doores, the lead author claimed that this depends entirely on the height of one’s peak, which in turn determines the duration of the antibodies staying in one’s body. The relevant study also found that the stronger the infection, the higher the rate of antibodies, which then fall over the following few months.

If this is indeed true, it might alter the route of vaccine development, which may not protect people for long, for waves of COVID-19 may become seasonal. In essence, people might require timely booster shots in case a vaccine is developed.

University of Oxford’s vaccine research also point out to a similar fact, that even though the vaccine protected animals from serious complications from the infection, it was still passed on to others and still caused sickness among people.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday re-imposed a night curfew and suspended alcohol sales as coronavirus infections spiked and the health system risked being overwhelmed.

Coronavirus infection numbers had in recent days skyrocketed with at least 12,000 infections recorded daily, translating to around 500 infections every hour, severely straining health care resources.

South Africa is the worst-affected country on the continent with 276,242 registered cases including 4,079 deaths as of Sunday.

Ramaphosa warned that the "coronavirus storm" South Africa faced was "far fiercer and more destructive than any we have known before".

"It is stretching our resources and our resolve to their limits," he said.

"As we head towards the peak of infections, it is vital that we do not burden our clinics and hospitals with alcohol-related injuries that could have been avoided," Ramaphosa said in a televised address to the nation.

"We have therefore decided that in order to conserve hospital capacity, the sale, dispensing and distribution of alcohol will be suspended with immediate effect," Ramaphosa said.

South Africa's first booze ban, implemented in March was lifted on June 1.

But on Sunday Ramaphosa rescinded the move, saying "there is now clear evidence that the resumption of alcohol sales has resulted in substantial pressure being put on hospitals, including trauma and ICU units, due to motor vehicle accidents, violence as well as trauma that is alcohol-induced."

He also ordered a curfew from 9pm (1900GMT) until 4am (0200GMT) starting Monday.

Ramaphosa also outlawed family visits and social events which have been blamed for helping the virus spread.

His administration would from now tighten the regulations on the mandatory wearing of face masks.

Ramaphosa said the government was ramping up healthcare system where there are 28,000 hospital beds reserved for coronavirus patients.

But the system is desperately short of staff, with at least 12,000 more mostly nurses, doctors and physiotherapists still required.

"We have heard of instances where people who are infected have been turned away from health facilities due to a lack of beds or essential supplies. This is deeply worrying," he said.

Health experts have predicted that South Africa's coronavirus outbreak will peak between July and November and is projected to claim at least 40,000 lives.

The main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) party said the alcohol ban and a night-time curfew were a distraction from the state's failure to bolster treatment and testing capacity.

"These ineffective gimmicks are an attempt to obscure the truth of our situation: that the national government has completely and utterly wasted South Africa's long and crippling lockdown," said DA leader John Steenhuisen in a statement.

Citing data by UNESCO, the charity showed how in April 2020, over 1.6 billion students had lost access to schools and universities in a bid to counter the coronavirus crisis. This was a big number, for it refers to 90 per cent of the global student population.

The new report titled “Save Our Education” claims,” For the first time in human history, an entire generation of children globally have had their education disrupted”.

Additionally, in the aftermath of the virus and during the recovery process, over 90 to 117 million children could befall to poverty, which would in turn even decrease the number of kids attending school.

Based on economical and social factors, the report claimed that a whopping 9.7 million children will drop out of school permanently. They took into account the fact that more kids will now be pushed into informal unemployment, and girls may be forced to marry in many situations.

The coronavirus pandemic could also cause $77 billion worth of losses in the education sector and less stipulation in the budget, accelerating the crisis in the low and middle income countries by the end of 2021.

"Around 10 million children may never return to school, this is an unprecedented education emergency and governments must urgently invest in learning," the charity’s chief executive Inger Ashing said.

The inequality between male and female students is also expected to spike.” Instead we are at risk of unparalleled budget cuts which will see existing inequality explode between the rich and the poor, and between boys and girls”, it said.

Funds needed urgently

In the report, the charity also stressed on the need to urgently pump more money into the education sector, to ensure kids return to schools, especially in developing countries.

"We know the poorest, most marginalised children who were already the furthest behind have suffered the greatest loss, with no access to distance learning - or any kind of education - for half an academic year," Ashing added.

The charity also suggested the nullification of debt repayments by poor countries, which would “free up” $14 billion for pumping money into education programmes across the globe.

"If we allow this education crisis to unfold, the impact on children's futures will be long lasting. The promise the world has made to ensure all children have access to a quality education by 2030, will be set back by years," Ashing said.

According to the report, the kids in following countries are at the most risk: Afghanistan, Chad, Niger, Mali, Liberia, Mauritania, Yemen, Nigeria, Pakistan, Guinea, Ivory Coast, and Senegal.

Coronavirus pandemic has brought the world to a standstill. Most businesses still remain shut or disrupted, and educational institutions are also finding it challenging to reopen amid safety concerns.

Over 10 million kids may permanently drop out of school due to the pandemic, a new report claims

Argentina exceeded 100,000 cases of novel coronavirus infections on Sunday as it struggles to contain spiraling case rates despite a strict quarantine imposed on the capital Buenos Aires and its surroundings.

The health ministry said 2,657 new cases confirmed overnight took the total to 100,166.

The South American country imposed a strict quarantine in mid-March to stop the pandemic. It relaxed restrictions slightly in May but then reinstated them in late June for Buenos Aires and its surroundings due to a spike in cases.

The death toll in Argentina from COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, is 1,845, a far cry from the 71,469 in Brazil by Sunday and the 11,682 in Peru.

But confirmed case numbers moved into four figures daily in early June and for the past four days have hit at least 3,000 daily.

Carla Vizzotti, deputy health minister, said the lockdowns would be maintained while hospitals continued to fill up.

"What we want to do is...decrease virus transmission and buy more time for the health service to be able to respond," she said.

Mauro Grossman, an intensive care doctor at Ezeiza Hospital in Buenos Aires, told Reuters he believed the peak was approaching. "We believe this peak will plateau and not decrease for a while," he said. "That is the most dangerous thing, being at peak for a long time, that is what is going to make beds fill up much faster and the intensive care beds get quickly occupied.”

Some 12.81 million coronavirus cases have been confirmed worldwide, and 565,231 people have died, according to a Reuters count.

The United States has the highest number of cases in the world, with 3.26 million and 134,654 deaths. Other countries with high rates of infections include Brazil, India and Russia.

The coronavirus has also hit Argentina's economy hard, when it was already heading into its third year of recession at a time when it seeks to restructure $65 billion in debt.

Does following social distancing norms have something to do with one’s working memory? A new study claims so!

According to the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, working memory may have a role to play in the complicity or refusal to follow social distancing norms.

The author of the study, Weizhen Xie from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke claimed that that the successful identification and containment of the virus is possible if people voluntarily follow the protocols in place.

US not protocol friendly

Taking the United States as the grounds for his study, he noted how ever since the country started reopening, people have flouted social distancing norms, leading to a resurgence of new infections across the country.

Xie wanted to understand why some people follow the protocol, while many others simply refuse to do so.

Spanning over two studies, the scientists surveyed 850 American residents between March 13 and 25, 2020. This was just when the virus had begun stirring trouble in the US. The research assessed not only one’s compliance to norms, but took into account personality, mood, working memory, and fluid intelligence.

The psychologists discovered that those who had a better working memory capacity were also able to retain the protocols in place, like avoiding touching each other and maintaining distance.

Additionally, fluid intelligence and the ability to process the situation was ranked higher among individuals who followed the social distancing norms. The ones possessing a more functional and stronger working memory also perceived social distancing as a beneficial than harmful.

What is working memory capacity?

Working memory capacity refers to one’s ability to retain all the information at hand, in this case, of the pros and cons of following social distancing. The decision made based on this is dependent on societal benefits and personal costs, the parameters of working memory capacity. The scientist told PsyPost, “the bottom line is that we should not rely on people’s habitual following of a norm because social distancing is not yet adequately established in US society”.

The scientist further claimed that this is expected to change once wearing mask and socially distancing are normalised in the American society.

The ongoing COVID-19 disease was declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020 by the World Health Organization. At the moment, the virus has infected 188 countries and lockdowns are being imposed and reimposed across the globe intermittently.

A fresh lockdown has been imposed in parts of Kashmir after a spike in the number of coronavirus positive cases, which prompted authorities to reimpose restriction in Containment and Red Zones of the valley.

After the lockdown was lifted, people breathed a sigh of relief but locals were not following social distancing norms and other SOPs laid by the government with experts calling for an immediate lockdown to control the spread of this deadly virus.

On Sunday, strict restrictions were ordered in 88 containment zones of Srinagar to deal with the growing cases in the city. The total number of positive cases in Srinagar has reached 1,708, out of which 1145 are active according to the latest data provided by the administration. The summer capital of the union territory Srinagar has 1,704 cases, the highest among 20 districts of J&K with 44 deaths so far.

A total of 10,513 people have been tested COVID positive since the outbreak which has worried the health experts with currently 4355 cases active positive in different hospitals. Apart from Srinagar, districts including Baramulla, Anantnag, and Kupwara have imposed a similar strategy to combat the deadly virus.

STRUGGLING ECONOMY

What's more worrying is that the economy of the erstwhile state has been badly hit post the abrogation of J&K special status which witnessed many days of curfew and restrictions. The business sector of the valley had pinned their hopes to this summer but the spread of coronavirus has brought down curtains on their hopes.
