Climate change and global warming are words that are tossed, often carelessly, in our everyday conversations. So much so that the real danger for humankind they encapsulate is often overlooked and forgotten. Findings of a new study may be another wake-up call for us to sit and seriously think about something that can jeopardise our very existence on the only planet we call home.

The study, as reported by The Guardian, is the first to calculate the global cost directly attributable to human-caused global warming. It reportedly said that we paid an average cost of USD 140 billion each year between 2000 and 2019 as a result of global warming. The latest data reveals that the cost was USD 280 billion in the year 2022. Due to lack of data from many countries, especially from low-income countries, means that the number may be much higher. Also, aspects such a climate cost incurred due to decline in crop yields and sea level rise was not included.

The study has also found that over two decades, 1.2 billion people have been affected by climate crisis.

Two-third of the damage costs were due to lives that were lost. The third was due to destruction and other assets being destroyed.

According to the researchers, their methods can be used for calculating funding that was needed for loss and damage fund which was established at the United Nations' climate summit in 2022. The fund is intended for recovery from extreme weather events in poorer countries.

“The headline number is $140bn a year and, first of all, that’s already a big number,” said Prof Ilan Noy as quoted by The Guardian. Prof Noy is from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. He carried out the study with colleague Rebecca Newman.

“Second, when you compare it to the standard quantification of the cost of climate change [using computer models], it seems those quantifications are underestimating the impact of climate change.”

Noy noted that there was no data of people killed or of economic damage caused due several extreme weather events.

“That indicates our headline number of $140bn is a significant understatement,” he said.

As an example, &nbsp;he said that heatwave death data was available only in case of Europe.

&nbsp;“We have no idea how many people died from heatwaves in all of sub-Saharan Africa.”

Climate change is costing us USD 16 million per hour: Study

Pope Francis is warning followers around the world about climate change. The 86-year-old head of the catholic church is urging rich nations to make profound changes to tackle climate crisis. On wednesday, the Pope issued an official declaration saying that the effects of climate change are “already irreversible” and devastating to humanity.

The Earth is heating up, and soon it may reach temperatures&nbsp;and humidity that after a few hours of exposure could prove fatal for humans, even young ones. Based on recent research, scientists have identified the maximum mix of heat and humidity a human body can take.&nbsp;

<h2>Wet bulb temperature</h2>

Previously scientists thought that a young, healthy person will die after enduring around six hours of temperatures close to 35 degree&nbsp;Celsius (95 degree Fahrenheit), and 100 per cent humidity. However, new research argues that the actual threshold could be much lower.

Researchers at United States' Pennsylvania State University decided to put the theorised "wet bulb temperature" to the test — the point at which sweat no longer evaporates off the skin, leading to heatstroke and eventually death. This was earlier measured using wet cloth and thermometers.

Measuring the core temperatures of healthy, young people inside a heat chamber, researchers found that the study participants reached their "critical environmental limit" at a wet bulb temperature of 30.6 degree&nbsp;Celsius, much lower than previously theorised.

The previously thought heat, humidity-bearing capacity of humans (35 degrees Celsius) as per an AFP report has only been breached a few times, particularly in South Asia and the Persian Gulf.&nbsp;

Climate change, however, is leading to an increase in dangerous wet bulb events, with the frequency of such events doubling over the past 40 years, said Colin Raymond of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory while talking to AFP.

Raymond's research indicates that if the world warms 2.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, these wet bulb events will get even more frequent.

Survival and climate change: Scientists identify 'deadly' heat and humidity combo

As India commits its ambitious climate goals, a report by Climate Risk Horizons (CRH) has revealed that the country's banks are alarmingly ill-equipped to address climate change risks. While India pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 at the Glasgow Climate Meet, its banking sector has been slow to incorporate climate risks into their policies.

The report, which assessed 34 top banks on various parameters related to climate risk management, found that most of them lack policies addressing fossil fuel use, emissions limits, and climate scenario analysis. CRH's survey highlighted that public sector banks are particularly vulnerable to large capital shortfalls due to adverse climate shocks.

CRH’s report noted, "Extreme weather events in 2022 claimed 3,026 lives and affected crop areas. Preparedness for climate risks means that they have to be measured and managed. And this is exactly where Indian banks are lagging."

India faced another year of climate-related disasters in 2023, with flooding and landslides in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh resulting in significant loss of life and property. The financial toll is estimated to be substantial, highlighting the urgent need for banks to address climate risks.

The report also emphasized the importance of joining international climate initiative associations, such as the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF) and the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). These associations provide expertise and guidance on climate accounting and reporting.

GHG accounting, a critical aspect of addressing climate risks, involves measuring greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O). It's crucial for financial institutions to measure and report their Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions) emissions. However, Scope 3 emissions, which encompass emissions from a company's value chain, remain challenging to measure but are vital for financial institutions to track.

According to CRH's data, only 10 out of the 34 banks have begun disclosing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, with 8 of them also starting to disclose some Scope 3 emissions. Notably, none of the banks have calculated the impact of different climate scenarios on their portfolios. Furthermore, only 10 banks have disclosed the amount of green finance disbursed, and none have set comprehensive net-zero targets covering all three scope emissions.

CRH has urged Indian banks to take concrete steps towards aligning with India's climate goals. This includes increased lending for the country's energy transition targets, transparent disclosure of climate-related figures, and ensuring that fossil fuel-dependent industries they finance develop science-based transition plans. As the world grapples with the consequences of climate change, India's banking sector faces mounting pressure to play a pivotal role in combating climate risks.

King Charles III on Thursday pledged to do everything he could to strengthen the relationship between France and Britain, suggesting the "indispensable" partners should also team up to tackle the climate emergency.

In a speech at the French Senate on the second day of a three-day visit to France that London hopes will tighten post-Brexit relations, Charles won a standing ovation from lawmakers after deftly mixing English and French as well as personal and political reflections.

The visit has so far been seen in British and French media as a success, with occasional calls of "Vive le roi!" ("Long live the King!") even heard on the streets of Paris.

In his speech, Charles recalled his mother Queen Elizabeth II, whom he succeeded upon her death one year ago, describing her legacy for France-UK relations as a "golden thread which will forever shine brightly" and saying the royal family was "moved beyond measure" by tributes to her from France.

"For the time that is granted to me as King, I pledge to do whatever I can to strengthen the indispensable relationship between the United Kingdom and France," he said.

"Quite simply, the United Kingdom will always be one of France's closest allies and best friends," he said, speaking from a lectern adorned with British, French and EU flags.

<h2>'Catastrophic destruction'</h2>

Charles suggested that France and Britain team up to tackle the climate and biodiversity emergencies with a new version of the Entente Cordiale, the 1904 pact that sealed the friendship between Paris and London.&nbsp;

"I would like to propose it also becomes an 'Entente pour la Durabilite' (Partnership for Sustainability) in order to tackle the global climate and biodiversity emergency more effectively," he said.

He also vowed that London and Paris were "steadfast in our determination Ukraine will triumph" in fighting the Russian invasion.

"Just as we stand together against military aggression, so must we strive together to protect the world from our most existential challenge of all -- that of global warming, climate change and the catastrophic destruction of nature," said the king, known for campaigning on environmental issues for the past decades.

By coincidence, Charles's latest call on the environment came a day after Britain's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak watered down green policies aimed at achieving net zero carbon emissions by mid-century.

His speech will also be etched in history as the first British monarch to speak in the main chamber of the Senate: his mother spoke in a conference hall within the Senate in a 2004 speech.

"Applause we can only dream of in our chambers!" said Senate speaker Gerard Larcher when lawmakers rose to their feet in unison after the speech as lower-house speaker Yael Braun-Pivet laughed in agreement.

<h2>Notre-Dame homage</h2>

The Senate speech is the diplomatic high point of the day that followed Wednesday's banquet at the Versailles Palace hosted by President Emmanuel Macron.

Charles then visited the northern Paris suburb of Saint-Denis -- home to the French national stadium used for the current Rugby World Cup and the Olympics next year -- meeting residents and visiting its majestic mediaeval basilica.

He also rejoined Queen Camilla and French first lady Brigitte Macron -- who even briefly played ping-pong while visiting a sports centre.

Later on the Ile de la Cite on the river Seine, Charles —- a keen gardener who once admitted he talked to his plants —- toured a flower market named after Queen Elizabeth II on her last state visit in 2014.

He and Camilla then greeted a crowd of well-wishers while walking to the nearby Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was partially destroyed by a devastating fire in 2019.

Joined again by the Macrons, they were shown the renovation and reconstruction work at the church, visiting in particular a gargoyle workshop.

Charles had said in an emotional message to Macron after the fire that he was "utterly heartbroken", calling Notre-Dame "one of the greatest architectural achievements of Western civilisation".

The king was to later attend a climate and biodiversity financing conference at the Natural History Museum, before wrapping up the Paris leg of the visit with a formal farewell from Macron at the Elysee Palace.

His final day will be spent in the southwestern city of Bordeaux.

The French president is known to have a strong personal rapport with Charles, with both men known for their love of books.

Commentators in France excitedly noted how Macron repeatedly touched Charles's shoulder and his wife kissed Camilla, in a new protocol unthinkable under the more distant and austere Elizabeth II.

King Charles III proposes France-UK pact to combat climate 'emergency'

In Thailand's picturesque Chonburi Province, the seawater of the Upper Gulf has an enchanting jade-green hue. However, the picturesque waters hide a dark secret—dense and slimy, it hides the stink of grass and decaying fish.

The green hue is a telltale sign pointing to a plankton bloom in progress. Here's why this is bad news.

<h2>Plankton, fish and more</h2>

While marine creatures like fish and whales rely on plankton as a food source, excessive blooms can deplete oxygen from the water, leading to the death of fish, shellfish, and other aquatic life.&nbsp;

This disruption sets off a chain reaction, wreaking havoc on the natural food chains and also fisheries in the area.

Marine scientist Tanuspong Pokavanich, as quoted by Reuters, says, "This is the first time that I've seen this much (plankton) since I was born, which means it is very severe this year."&nbsp;

Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/scientists-push-to-save-flower-that-smells-like-dead-bodies-heres-all-you-need-to-know-637981">Why are scientists pushing to save a flower that smells like dead bodies? Here's all you need to know</a>

Approximately a quarter of Thailand's Upper Gulf is presently affected, with roughly half appearing green, while the other portion nearer the shore has turned brown due to pollution and the presence of deceased plankton, notes the scientist.

Tanuspong explains the fate of the plankton: "The plankton in the water will (either) consume all the nutrients and thrive, or they will die due to a lack of light. Their carcasses will then sink to the seabed and decompose." This decomposition process contributes to low oxygen conditions in the water, further impacting marine life.

<h3>Fisheries impacted</h3>

Along this coastline, more than 260 mussel farming plots float, and over 80 per cent of them have already borne the brunt of the bloom, reports an official from the Chonburi Fisheries Association.

According to data from the Department of Fisheries in 2021, Chonburi typically produces 2,086 tonnes (4.6 million lbs) of mussels annually, valued at 26,655,000 Thai Baht ($1 million).

Suchat Buawat, a 47-year-old local fisherman with over 10 farming plots, points to the devastation: "The damage appears to be 100 percent. See, they just fall off when you shake it. There are no live ones left, they're all dead, including the oysters too. Normally, they would cling (to the rope) here." He estimates that he has already borne losses that surpass 500,000 baht ($14,000).

The precise cause behind the emerald-hued seawater remains under investigation. Scientists like Tanuspong are reportedly exploring potential links to climate change and natural phenomena like El Niño.&nbsp;

The scientist emphasised that addressing the consequences of such blooms goes beyond science. He said, "If we don't start contributing (to conserve the Earth), nothing will change."

Plankton, fish and more While marine creatures like fish and whales rely on plankton as a food source, excessive blooms can deplete oxygen from the water, leading to the death of fish, shellfish, and other aquatic life. This disruption sets off a chain reaction, wreaking havoc on the natural food chains and also fisheries in the area. Marine scientist Tanuspong Pokavanich, as quoted by Reuters, says, "This is the first time that I've seen this much (plankton) since I was born, which means it is very severe this year." Also read | Why are scientists pushing to save a flower that smells like dead bodies? Here's all you need to know Approximately a quarter of Thailand's Upper Gulf is presently affected, with roughly half appearing green, while the other portion nearer the shore has turned brown due to pollution and the presence of deceased plankton, notes the scientist. Fisheries impacted Along this coastline, more than 260 mussel farming plots float, and over 80 per cent of them have already borne the brunt of the bloom, reports an official from the Chonburi Fisheries Association. Climate takes centre-stage at un as global temperatures rise

Scientists claim rising temperatures are causing stronger and less predictable storms. Watch the report.

Typical hurricane season coming sooner than expected | WION

Hurricane Hilary, a category four storm, is hurtling towards Mexico's Baja California peninsula on Friday, announced the United States's National Hurricane Center (NHC) as it issued its first ever tropical storm watch for California.

The US government agency also warned of a possibility of life-threatening and possibly catastrophic floods.

<h2>Storm advisory&nbsp;</h2>

"Life-threatening and potentially catastrophic flooding are likely over much of Baja California and Southern California this weekend and early next week," said the Miami-based agency in its latest advisory.

The NHC as per a Reuters report said that it expects the powerful storm to near Mexico's popular Cabo San Lucas resort city by late Friday. The US government agency said that the hurricane should weaken before hitting the US West Coast this weekend. However, they warned that nevertheless, it will bring dangerous rains.

"If you've got weekend plans, it's probably time to start altering those plans," said NHC Deputy Director Jamie Rhome, as per the report. Rhome warned that the area from San Diego to Los Angeles and Las Vegas faced flood risks, in particular Palm Springs area will be at high risk when the storm hits this weekend.

<h2>Category 4 storm</h2>

As per the NHC advisory, hurricane Hilary was moving West northwest at nearly 12 mph or 19 kilometres per hour. The storm is packing a maximum sustained wind of nearly 130 mph or 215 kilometres per hour. It was upgraded to a category 4 storm overnight.&nbsp;

Rhome said that while icy waters of the California coastline typically weaken hurricanes and tropical storms, "this system is expected to hold on to its strength because it will be moving fast."

He also said that California and Southern Nevada face the risk of severe flooding caused by up to 10 inches or 25.4 centimetres of rainfall. The NHC, as per Reuters, warned a storm surge could cause coastal flooding and destructive waves along Mexico's Baja California peninsula.

After a record-breaking summer heat wave, hurricane Hilary's heavy rainfall is expected to hit California Nevada and neighbouring Arizona. In July, Phoenix, Arizona, both endured a month-long stretch of temperatures that exceeded 110 degrees Fahrenheit or 43 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

As per the National Weather Service, the region was trapped under a "heat dome" of stagnant air. In mid-July, California's Death Valley desert hit temperatures exceeding 128 Fahrenheit or 53 degrees Celsius. This was among the highest temperatures recorded on the planet in the past 90 years.

As the Earth heats up, sea ice in the Antarctic region has fallen to a record low this year. On Tuesday, scientists warned that as the global temperatures rise, there is no quick fix to reverse the damage done.

In a study published on Tuesday (August 8) researchers reported that the continent's minimum summer ice cover, which last year had dipped to a low of below two million square kilometres (or 772,000 square miles) has now fallen further.&nbsp;

<h2>Lowest of lows</h2>

The study published in the journal Frontiers in Environmental Science found that in February, for the first time since satellite monitoring started keeping a track of Antarctica's summer ice, levels have reached this low.

In 2023, the sea ice minimum reached levels 20 per cent lower than the average levels recorded in the last 40 years. This, as per Tim Naish, director of the Antarctic Research Centre at New Zealand's Victoria University of Wellington, equals to sea loss nearly 10 times the area of New Zealand. Naish was not a part of this study.

"In some cases we are getting close to tipping points, which once crossed will lead to irreversible changes with unstoppable consequences for future generations," he added.

As per Caroline Holmes, one of the study's co-authors, "It's going to take decades if not centuries for these things to recover. There's no quick fix to replacing this ice."

"It will certainly take a long time, even if it's possible," said Holmes, a polar climate scientist at British Antarctic Survey.

<h2>Study findings</h2>

The study says that the burning of fossil fuels is a driving force behind Global warming. This has made Antarctica vulnerable to extreme events, and the impact is "virtually certain" to get worse, it claims.

While it is certain that climate change will "lead to increases in the size and frequency" of heatwaves, ice shelf collapses and declines in sea ice in Antarctica, the precise impact has been hard to measure.

Scientists, as per Reuters, have struggled to measure the exact extent to which global warming is affecting the thickness of Antarctic ice. However, as per Martin Siegert, a glaciologist at the University of Exeter and a co-author of the study, it's "scientifically reasonable" to assume that extreme events are going to get more frequent.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg&nbsp;has pulled out of an appearance at the upcoming Edinburgh International Book Festival, citing alleged links of sponsoring firm&nbsp;to the fossil fuel industry.

The annual festival was due to take place on August 13th (Sunday) and Thunberg was due to speak at an event called 'It's Not Too Late To Change The World' at the Edinburgh Playhouse.

However, she said that she would not attend the festival because it recieves sponsorship from the Baillie Gifford investment firm, which she claimed "invests heavily in the fossil fuel industry".

<h2>Greenwashing</h2>

Accusing the fossil fuel industry of "greenwashing" by sponsoring cultural events, Thunberg said she does not want to be associated with it.

"Greenwashing efforts by the fossil fuel industry, including sponsorship of cultural events, allows them to keep the social licence to continue operating."

<h2>Baillie Gifford's rebuttal</h2>

Baillie Gifford, which is an investment management firm, as per BBC, has been a sponsor of&nbsp;the Edinburgh book festival for over 19 years.

The company, however, said that it was not a significant fossil fuel investor. It also claims that compared to the market average of 11 per cent,&nbsp;only about two per cent of its clients' money is invested into fossil fuels.

"Of those companies, some have already moved most of their business away from fossil fuels, and many are helping to drive the transition to clean energy," added a company spokesperson.

"Currently, five per cent of our clients' money is invested in companies whose sole purpose is to develop clean energy solutions," they added.

The director of the book festival, Nick Barley, applauded Thunberg for standing by her principles, but said that the festival too stands by its principles.

"The Book Festival exists to give a platform for debate and discussion around key issues affecting humanity today - including the climate emergency.

"We would not be in a position to provide that platform without the long-term support of organisations such as Baillie Gifford," said Barley as quoted by BBC.

"We strongly believe that Baillie Gifford are part of the solution to the climate emergency. They are early investors in progressive climate positive companies, providing funds to help them grow".

Apologising to people who had purchased the tickets hoping to see the young climate activist, he said they will be refunded in full.&nbsp;

Baillie Gifford's rebuttal Baillie Gifford, which is an investment management firm, as per BBC, has been a sponsor of the Edinburgh book festival for over 19 years. The company, however, said that it was not a significant fossil fuel investor. It also claims that compared to the market average of 11 per cent, only about two per cent of its clients' money is invested into fossil fuels. "Of those companies, some have already moved most of their business away from fossil fuels, and many are helping to drive the transition to clean energy," added a company spokesperson. Apologising to people who had purchased the tickets hoping to see the young climate activist, he said they will be refunded in full. Greta Thunberg to skip Edinburgh International Book Festival over 'greenwashing' concerns

So why warming oceans is a worrying sign?

Well, they soak up about 6 billion metric tons of carbon from the upper ocean every year. It also produces a staggering 50 per cent of the oxygen we breathe.

It is a mighty absorber, taking in 25 per cent of all carbon dioxide emissions, combating the effects of global warming, and acting as a natural carbon sink. But there is a problem warm waters won't be able to absorb CO2.

Shattered climate records show world is on existential brink

If you are in west asia right now, the air might feel hotter than your oven. The heatwave this year is getting cruel, from agriculture to tourism no sector has been left untouched. Ghadi francis gets you a report on the impact of the scorching weather on Jordan's dead sea resorts.

Heatwave hits Jordan's tourism industry | The West Asia Post

Climate Change is steadily contributing to heating up the Earth, and in the latest, scientists have sounded the alarm over ocean temperatures, which as per European Union's climate change service Copernicus have hit their hottest ever recorded temperature.&nbsp;

Beating a 2016 record, the daily global sea surface temperatures have reached 20.96C, which is far above the average for this time of the year, reports BBC. In 2016, a record was set when the naturally occurring El Niño was in full swing.

<h2>Warmer oceans land us in 'hot water'</h2>

Oceans play an important role in the grand scheme of things. They are a vital climate regulator, soaking up heat, producing half the Earth's oxygen and driving weather patterns.

Warmer temperatures can negatively affect these abilities. Water loses some of its ability to absorb carbon dioxide upon heating up, this means that the gas which contributes to warming the planet stays in the atmosphere. This can also accelerate the melting of glaciers, which in turn flow into oceans, finally contributing to rising sea levels.&nbsp;

Further, hotter ocean water also affects marine life. Fishes and whales are known to move in search of cooler water, which disturbs the food chain. Other species, like sharks, are known to get more aggressive.

<h2>A hot bath or the ocean?</h2>

Talking to BBC, Dr Kathryn Lesneski, who is monitoring a marine heatwave in the Gulf of Mexico for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, compared the water temperatures to a bath.

She said that due to the rising water temperatures, "There is widespread coral bleaching at shallow reefs in Florida and many corals have already died."

Experts, as per BBC, warn that this can also affect fish stocks.

Dr Matt Frost, from the Plymouth Marine Lab in the UK, said that with pollution and overfishing, "We are putting oceans under more stress than we have done at any point in history."

<h2>Something to be nervous about</h2>

Scientists have expressed their worry about the timing of this latest broken record.

"The fact that we've seen the record now makes me nervous about how much warmer the ocean may get between now and next March," says Dr Samantha Burgess, from the Copernicus Climate Change Service.

As per Burgess, oceans should be at their warmest in March and not August.

This latest record comes as, globally, this year we saw a series of marine heatwaves — in the UK, the North Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Mexico.

As per Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) between 1982 and 2016, the frequency of marine heatwaves has doubled, becoming more intense and longer.

Just last week, sea surface temperatures in Florida reached hot tube levels at 38.44C. Previously, in June, the temperature of water in the UK was recorded at 3C to 5C higher than average.&nbsp;

Typhoon Khanun leaves 2 dead, 41 injured in Japan; over 220,000 homes sans power

In summary, the G20 leaders were unable to reach consensus on all the necessary measures to adhere to the Paris Agreement's aim of keeping global warming far below 2°C, let alone target the more ambitious 1.5°C limit, beyond which the globe is predicted to experience severe floods, droughts, and natural disasters.

The ability to predict earthquakes has long eluded scientists, as the search for reliable precursors — early indicators of an impending earthquake — has remained fruitless.&nbsp;

However, two researchers may have made a significant breakthrough in this field. According to their findings, earthquakes could potentially be detected through GPS measurements, and that too 'several hours' before the main event.

Quentin Bletery, a seismologist at the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement and the Université Côte d'Azur in France, believes that this discovery is a significant step forward.

By analysing a dataset maintained by the University of Nevada at Reno, Bletery and his colleague Jean-Mathieu Nocquet focused on GPS stations located near known earthquake zones with magnitudes of 7.0 or higher.&nbsp;

They examined the recorded positions of these stations in the 48 hours leading up to each earthquake, comparing the actual motion with the expected motion caused by the quake.

Their research revealed that in the final two hours before an earthquake, the ground's motion often began to align with the expected motion, intensifying as the time of the quake approached. This pattern was not typically observed during randomly selected two-hour windows when no&nbsp;earthquakes happened. These findings suggest that the motion observed in the final two hours may serve as precursors to earthquakes.

<h2>Is this the ultimate protection plan?</h2>

The research, published in the journal Science, provides valuable insights into earthquake behaviour and offers hope for future advancements in earthquake prediction.

Despite this breakthrough, seismologists, as per the report, still face significant challenges in transforming this knowledge into a reliable earthquake prediction method.&nbsp;

Current instruments are not sensitive enough to detect this motion in advance. Bletery estimates that existing equipment would need to be approximately 50 times more sensitive to detect precursors to earthquakes.

"That's a huge technological gap," said Bletery,&nbsp;adding, "we just don't have the technology yet to do it."

While this technological gap presents a significant obstacle, Bletery believes that the discovery itself is a sign of progress. It challenges the notion that earthquakes are chaotic, instantaneous events caused by sudden fault movements, he remarked.&nbsp;

Instead, he said that the observed two-hour preview suggests that earthquakes may have precursor elements that could potentially be identified before they occur.

The researchers' findings also raised intriguing questions. When examining GPS data along Japan's coast, they discovered that the motions seemed to match far in advance of the magnitude 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake that triggered a devastating tsunami in 2011. The motions appeared to follow a repeating cycle of approximately 3.6 hours. The cause of this cycle remains a mystery.

The ability to predict earthquakes has long eluded scientists, as the search for reliable precursors — early indicators of an impending earthquake — has remained fruitless.

The ability to predict earthquakes has long eluded scientists, as the search for reliable precursors — early indicators of an impending earthquake — has remained fruitless. However, two researchers may have made a significant breakthrough in this field. According to their findings, earthquakes could potentially be detected through GPS measurements, and that too 'several hours' before the main event. How will this work? Quentin Bletery, a seismologist at the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement and the Université Côte d'Azur in France, believes that this discovery is a significant step forward. "Conceptually, that tells you that it is possible to do it," he said, as quoted by Space.com. Breakthrough in earthquake research: GPS measurements could predict tremors hours ago

Greece on Saturday (July 22) faced its hottest July weekend in 50 years, and temperatures are forecast to go above 40 degrees Celsius. According to a report by the news agency AFP, ministries have advised people to work from home (WFH) where possible and not step outdoors unnecessarily.

Greece on Saturday (July 22) faced its hottest July weekend in 50 years, and temperatures are forecast to go above 40 degrees Celsius. According to a report by the news agency AFP, ministries have advised people to work from home (WFH) where possible and not step outdoors unnecessarily. Panagiotis Giannopoulos, a meteorologist with state broadcaster ERT, said that temperatures in Athens would be above 40 degrees Celsius for six to seven days, through to the end of July. The report said that on the central island of Evia, a 46-year-old man died due to heatstroke. The Chalkida Hospital said that the cause of the death appeared to be cardio-respiratory failure following exposure to high temperatures. Earlier, the national meteorological institute EMY reported temperatures of 41 degrees Celsius at Attica and temperatures in Thessalia could climb up to 44 degrees Celsius. 79 forest fires reported across Greece Authorities said on Saturday that firefighters were battling 79 forest fires across Greece. Vassilios Vathrakoyannis, a spokesperson from the fire fighting department, said that Greece would be on a state of alert across the weekend. On Friday, Turkey said it was sending two firefighting aircraft to Greece. Meanwhile, the ministry of culture said that architectural attractions including World Heritage Site the Athens Acropolis will be shut during the hottest parts of the day through to Sunday. Heatwave to expand in southern US A record-breaking heatwave stretching across the southern United States was expected to expand in the coming days. The National Weather Service (NWS) said that across Southern US, about 80 million Americans will swelter in temperatures of 41 degrees Celsius and above this weekend. Phoenix, Arizona would be the worst affected. Phoenix is surrounded by desert, and its 1.6 million residents are accustomed to brutal summer temperatures. However, this time, the heat wave is unprecedented in its length: it has already helped the city break its previous record of 18 straight days at or above 43 degrees Celsius.
