Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Wednesday (July 19) that his government would decide how it will address climate change. Citing Chinese state media, a report by The Washington Post said that President Xi did not address his remark to US climate envoy John Kerry, who was in Beijing to revive climate talks between the US and China. Instead, he gathered top officials from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to set his own environmental agenda without any input from Washington. Xi said that China would pursue its commitments “unswervingly,” but the pathways, intensity, and pace of such efforts “should and must be” determined without outside interference. Speaking to The Washington Post, Li Shuo, a senior policy adviser for Greenpeace East Asia, said that the Chinese president's remarks delivered at the time Kerry was in Beijing were no coincidence. Shuo said Xi showed that China would decide its own path "in achieving carbon goals and will not be ordered about by others." More work needed to build US-China climate relations: Kerry Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, US climate envoy Kerry said that more work was needed to build climate relations between the US and China. "We - our team and the United States administration - came to Beijing in order to unstick what has been stuck since almost last August." "This is our first in-person meeting since that time, and we're here to break new ground," Kerry added. Climate talks between Washington and Beijing were suspended last year following the visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan. Kerry also told reporters on Wednesday that despite the hiatus of the last year, the two countries found many points of agreement during three days of cordial but frank discussions, and they planned to work "intensively" in the weeks ahead as they prepare for COP28 climate talks in Dubai. "We are trying to work with China to figure out the path ahead. China is working hard to try to develop some of those new technologies as well as deploy those renewables that will become clean energy in the future. We look forward to working with China to accelerate that," the US climate envoy added. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. US climate envoy John Kerry seeks cooperation with China to redefine troubled relationship

The world is ravaged by intense floods and homes are being destroyed by heavy winds. China, Japan, Pakistan and the United States are on top of the list. Molly Gambhir reports.

Gravitas: The world battles intense floods

Over 61,000 people died as a result of extreme heat during Europe's record-breaking summer last year, according to a study published on Monday (July 11). The study calls for increased efforts to protect against even deadlier heatwaves that are expected in the coming years.

Europe experienced its hottest summer on record in 2022, with blistering heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires affecting several countries. While the European Union's statistics agency, Eurostat, had previously reported a high number of excess deaths during the summer, the specific deaths directly linked to the heat had not been quantified until now.

<h2>Deaths due to Europe's hottest summer</h2>

Researchers from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health and France's health research institute INSERM analysed temperature and mortality data from 2015 to 2022 for 823 regions across 35 European countries, covering a population of 543 million people.

Using models, they estimated the weekly number of deaths attributable to temperature for each region during the summer of 2022.

The study revealed that 61,672 deaths were linked to the heat between May 30 and September 4 of that year. The week of July 18-24 alone accounted for over 11,600 deaths due to an intense heatwave.

Hicham Achebak, an INSERM researcher and co-author of the study, described the number of deaths as "very high" and emphasised the need for further measures to protect the population.

Talking to AFP, he said: "We knew the effect of heat on mortality after 2003, but with this analysis, we see that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to protect the population."

<h2>Which regions were the hottest?</h2>

The study highlighted that France — a jump of 2.43 degrees Celsius — experienced the largest increase in heat compared to its previous summer average, followed closely by Switzerland (2.30C), Italy (2.28C), and Hungary (2.13C).

Italy at 18,010, however, recorded the highest death toll associated with the heat, followed by Spain (11,324) and Germany (8,173).

While the majority of deaths occurred among individuals over the age of 80, overall, women represented around 63 per cent of the heat-related fatalities.

The gender disparity became more significant in the 80-plus age group, with women having a mortality rate 27 per cent higher than men.

<h2>Future heat projections</h2>

The research predicted future scenarios if no action is taken to protect people from rising temperatures. As per the study, by 2030, Europe could witness over 68,000 heat-related deaths every summer.

By 2040, this number could rise to over 94,000, and by 2050, it could surpass 120,000.

"These predictions are based on the current level of vulnerability and future temperatures," said Achebak adding that "if we take very effective measures, that vulnerability can be reduced."

Climate change affects some countries more than others. One such country is Iraq, a largely barren nation. The united nations says Iraq is one of the five countries most impacted by effects of climate change, and this is reflected by the thousands of dead fish that washed ashore on the banks of a drying marsh in southern Iraq.

As per a comprehensive review of global energy data conducted by the Energy Institute, greenhouse gas emissions from the energy industry reached new highs in 2022, despite record growth in wind and solar power.&nbsp;

<h2>Fossil fuel consumption in 2022</h2>

The report by the Energy Institute was published in partnership with KPMG and the consultancy Kearney. It revealed that fossil fuels accounted for 82 per cent of the world's total energy consumption and that this caused a 0.8 per cent spike in greenhouse gas emissions as overall energy usage rose.&nbsp;

As per the report, the continued growth in global energy consumption is expected to increase further, which it says could result in higher emissions following the lifting of Covid travel restrictions in China.

Energy Institute's president Juliet Davenport said that "Despite further strong growth in wind and solar in the power sector, overall global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions increased again. We are still heading in the opposite direction to that required by the Paris agreement."

<h2>Increased demand for non-renewable energy sources</h2>

Global oil demand rose by 2.9 million barrels per day in 2022, reaching an average of 97.3 million bpd, driven in part by the resumption of global economic activity after the Covid pandemic.&nbsp;

Coal demand also increased by 0.6 per cent, driven by India and China, reaching levels not seen since 2014.&nbsp;

<h2>Renewable energy</h2>

Although renewable energy sources, excluding hydropower, met 7.5 per cent of the world's energy demand in 2022 — which is a 1 per cent increase from the previous year — the rise was overshadowed by a modest 1.1 increase in global energy consumption. This led to a greater reliance on oil and coal to meet the demand.&nbsp;

In 2022, solar energy output increased by 25 per cent. Compared to the previous year, wind power output also grew by 13.5 per cent.

Simon Virley, the head of energy and natural resources at KPMG, emphasised that despite the growth in renewables, the share of energy derived from fossil fuels remains struck at 82 per cent.

"Despite record growth in renewables, the share of world energy still coming from fossil fuels remains stubbornly stuck at 82 per cent, which should act as a clarion call for governments to inject more urgency into the energy transition."

<h2>Paris climate targets</h2>

The report warns that without urgent action, high energy-related emissions could undermine the goals of the Paris climate agreement, which aims to reduce emissions by half by the end of the decade to prevent severe global heating.

According to Reuters, local officials have reported that nine individuals are currently missing due to flash floods and landslides in the Taplejung and Panchthar districts, which are located along the eastern border of Nepal and adjacent to India.

Rescue workers have been unable to reach the hilly village of Sidingwa due to heavy rainfall, according to officials. The village is facing the risk of having at least 20 houses washed away, but the challenging weather conditions have hindered rescue efforts.

<h2>Forecasts&nbsp;</h2>

The situation remains highly precarious as meteorologists predict that the rain will persist for several more days, prompting alerts regarding rising river water levels.&nbsp;

Nepal and Monsoon rains

In Nepal, Monsoon rains are notorious for their widespread devastation.&nbsp;

These annual rains, which play a vital role in crop cultivation, typically start in mid-June and persist until September.&nbsp;

However, these rains also bring about devastating consequences, leading to the loss of hundreds of lives and numerous missing persons. The heavy rainfall triggers floods that submerge villages, destroy crops, and cause damage to infrastructure. This is a recurring occurrence in Nepal, a predominantly mountainous country situated between China and India.

In recent years, the frequency of fatal floods and landslides has seen an alarming rise, potentially attributed to factors such as climate change and the expansion of road networks in the region.

Rescue workers have been unable to reach the hilly village of Sidingwa due to heavy rainfall, according to officials. The village is facing the risk of having at least 20 houses washed away, but the challenging weather conditions have hindered rescue efforts. Forecasts The situation remains highly precarious as meteorologists predict that the rain will persist for several more days, prompting alerts regarding rising river water levels. Nepal and Monsoon rains In Nepal, Monsoon rains are notorious for their widespread devastation. These annual rains, which play a vital role in crop cultivation, typically start in mid-June and persist until September.

In a world marred by pandemics, conflicts, and economic upheavals, there is a far greater and insidious threat that looms large: climate change. As global temperatures soar and cataclysmic weather events become distressingly frequent, the most vulnerable populations bear the brunt of its harrowing repercussions.

Earth, the only known planet to harbour life, has taken billions of years to evolve into a delicate oasis. However, human activities now pose a grave threat to our planet and future generations. However, in the last century, we have rapidly altered the delicate, life-sustaining balance of our planet. In the name of development, we are on a path of destruction, pushing species to extinction and ecosystems to the brink of collapse. We shouldn't forget that humans are just one of the 8.7 million species which live on this rocky planet. The decisions we make today will shape the world that our future generations will inherit.

Climate change is a ticking time bomb and its effects are visible in every part of the world. No country, no community, is immune to the perils of a warming planet.

Climate change's most telling effect is on marginalised communities that are already shackled by poverty and scarce resources. Small island nations teeter on the precipice of devastation as rising sea levels imperil entire populations, leaving them grappling with the looming spectre of displacement

Indigenous peoples are deeply intertwined with their surroundings. They live a sustainable lifestyle in harmony with nature and have the lowest carbon footprint. But they are forced to be at the forefront, facing the wrath of mother nature. They confront the ominous erosion of ancestral livelihoods and the erosion of cultural heritage due to the degradation of their habitats.

Water scarcity emerges as another critical conundrum exacerbated by climate change. Traditional drought-stricken regions witness the inexorable dwindling of water reserves, exacerbating challenges related to drinking water, sanitation, and agricultural sustenance. This vicious cycle further deepens the grips of poverty, engendering social strife and forcing them to embark on perilous journeys as migrants.

Health risks, too, assume alarming dimensions under the relentless onslaught of climate change, with the most vulnerable bearing the brunt of its merciless blows. Heatwaves unleash as an ominous spectre; the mercury has embarked on a deadly upward journey. Several all-time high temperatures records have been broken. Extreme heat waves may be our new normal, thanks to climate change. The ominous question is: are we prepared?

The spread of vector-borne diseases, such as malaria and dengue fever, is increasing exponentially as climatic shifts facilitate the spread of disease-carrying vectors, casting a pall of gloom over the most marginalised populations.

So, what can we do? Well, effectively tackling climate change demands a multifaceted approach where sustainable solutions are the bedrock of its edifice. The transition to renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, not only curtails the planet-warming greenhouse gases but also serves as a fulcrum for job creation and catalyses economic prosperity. Investment in energy-efficient technologies and the fostering of a culture of energy conservation become pivotal steps in mitigating the carbon footprint that engulfs us. But for that to happen quickly, wealthy nations and multinational corporations need to share green technologies with vulnerable societies honestly.&nbsp;

Agriculture provides livelihoods for 2.5 billion people and is the largest source of income and jobs for poor, rural households. In developing countries, agriculture accounts for 29 per cent&nbsp;of GDP and 65 per cent of jobs. In developing nations, agrarian communities battle the ravages of erratic rainfall patterns that disrupt agricultural cycles, thrusting them into the jaws of abject food insecurity.

There is an urgent need for free access to climate-smart technologies, such as drought-resistant seeds and efficient irrigation systems, to empower vulnerable farmers to adapt to the ceaseless mutations of their ecological tapestries.

The need of the hour is collaborative synergies between governments, non-governmental organisations, and communities that will engender adaptation initiatives that remain firmly rooted in local realities, thus maximising efficacy.

Moreover, the preservation and restoration of fragile ecosystems emerge as milestones in mitigating climate change. Another tried and tested method is: rewilding. Taking a step back and allowing nature to heal itself naturally is the most logical step. Rewilding mitigates climate change by restoring ecosystems, reviving wildlife, and enhancing biodiversity. These rejuvenated ecosystems act as carbon sinks, effectively sequestering CO2, regulating the global carbon cycle, and reducing emissions.

Shielding forests, mangroves, and other natural habitats not only safeguards biodiversity but also serves as a bulwark against the inexorable march of carbon dioxide. Reforestation endeavours and sustainable land management practices emerge.

Over 130 lawmakers from the European Union and the United States are urging the removal of oil executive Sultan Al Jaber as the president of the upcoming COP28 climate talks. In a joint letter addressed to the United Nations, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and US President Joe Biden, the lawmakers have expressed concerns about the influence of fossil fuel companies on the negotiations.&nbsp;

<h2>Why are the&nbsp;lawmakers seeking Al Jaber's removal?</h2>

The appointment of Al Jaber, who heads the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, as the COP28 chief has been controversial since its very announcement.

The lawmakers argue that having an oil company executive leading the talks poses a risk of undermining the negotiations, particularly as Al Jaber's company plans to significantly increase oil production, potentially exceeding the global warming limits set through the COP process.

<h2>What does the letter say?</h2>

The letter as per Politico, warns that fossil fuel companies may exert "undue influence" over the negotiations, set to happen in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the end of the year.&nbsp;

Rising temperatures, heat waves, droughts and forest fires have all become a reality. With climate change steadily affecting the Earth's temperatures, the need to stay cool has become more pressing.&nbsp;As per a recent report, to combat the heat, billions of people are now opting for cheap, pocket-friendly air conditioners that are further adding to the rising temperatures.

In tropical countries,&nbsp;the rising temperatures have increasingly begun pushing normal summer temperatures into dangerous territory, and in temperate countries, heat waves that were previously unimaginable are becoming more common.

<h2>How are people dealing with the heat?</h2>

According to a report by Sustainable Energy for All, to deal with the rising temperatures, approximately 2.4 billion rural and urban poor individuals are on the verge of purchasing the most affordable cooling appliance available to them, regardless of its efficiency.

The report states that while the mass adoption of inexpensive air conditioners may serve as a quick solution to combat the effects of a hotter climate, it also poses complications for the global energy transition.

<h2>How air conditioners are landing us in 'hot soup'</h2>

In a special report released in 2018, the International Energy Agency (IEA) had warned that cooling would be "one of the leading contributors to global electricity demand over the next three decades".&nbsp;The IEA estimates that approximately 10 new air conditioners will be sold every second between now and 2050.

The increased use of air conditioning puts additional strain on local power supplies and undermines efforts to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.

<h2>How much energy are air conditioners consuming?</h2>

Currently, space cooling—which includes fans, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners—consumes over 2,000 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity annually. To put this into perspective, that is two and a half times the total electricity used across Africa. As per the IEA, this&nbsp;accounts for around 10 per cent of global electricity consumption.&nbsp;

Bloomberg reports that based on existing policies and targets, this demand is projected to surge more than three times, to 6,200 TWh by 2050, with nearly 70 per cent of the increase attributed to residential air conditioning units.

In certain regions, such as parts of the US and the Middle East, space cooling already surpasses two-thirds of peak electricity demand on hot days. For instance, in Saudi Arabia, air conditioning alone accounts for 70 per cent of the country's total annual electricity demand.&nbsp;

Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/indias-planning-to-combat-heatwave-crisis-most-advanced-study-593339">India's planning to combat heatwave crisis 'most advanced': Study</a>

<h2>What is&nbsp;the expected energy consumption of air conditioners in the future?</h2>

By 2050, space cooling is expected to overtake appliances as the largest consumer of electricity in buildings worldwide. To fulfil this demand, an additional capacity of 2,500 gigawatts would be required, which is equivalent to the current combined energy generation capacity of the United States, Europe, and India, according to the IEA.

The report predicts that countries with anticipated significant growth in cooling demand, particularly India, China, and Indonesia, would need to invest in substantial and expensive peak power capacity to meet the projected cooling needs.

<h2>But how are ACs contributing to rising temperatures?</h2>

It is all about the efficiency of cooling appliances.&nbsp;Often, consumers prioritise affordability over energy efficiency when purchasing new air conditioners.&nbsp;

As per the IEA,&nbsp;the average air conditioner sold in 2018 was only half as efficient as the typical appliance and only one-third as efficient as the best technology on the market.

<h2>What can countries do to promote energy-efficient air conditioners?</h2>

According to the IEA, countries could reward the purchase of energy-efficient cooling devices. As per the agency, implementing policies that mandate or incentivise the purchase of more efficient air conditioning units could reduce energy demand by 45 per cent and also lower investment and operational costs for the electricity network by $3 trillion.

<h2>Would that be enough?</h2>

Sadly, no. Even under an optimistic scenario that assumes the widespread adoption of more efficient cooling technology, the projected energy demand is likely to exceed the IEA's estimates for global warming by no more than 2 degrees Celsius.

Research conducted by the Centre for Sustainable Cooling at the University of Birmingham suggests that if everyone had access to the necessary cooling, including refrigerators for food and medicine, as well as air conditioners in cars and homes, the associated energy demand would be three times higher than the IEA's estimates by 2030.

However, according to a report by Sustainable Energy for All, an estimated 1.2 billion people living in rural and urban poor communities still lack&nbsp;access to cooling, including refrigeration and air conditioning.

<h2>How many ACs would the world require to cool the entire human population?&nbsp;</h2>

To meet the growing cooling needs, the Centre for Sustainable Cooling estimates that the world would require an additional 14 billion cooling devices by 2050. This is nearly four times the current number of 3.6 billion devices.

Furthermore, the volume of electricity required to power all these cooling devices, as estimated by the Centre, would amount to more than 80 per cent of the IEA's projected renewable capacity for 2050. In the worst-case scenario where new technologies for improving appliance efficiency are not adopted, this figure could surpass 100 per cent.

The report warns that even with improving AC efficiency, if renewable energy capacity does not continue to expand, the impact of millions more air conditioners would be far more significant. By 2030, it could result in over 2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per year, surpassing the entire emissions of the European Union in 2021.

However, according to a report by Sustainable Energy for All, an estimated 1.2 billion people living in rural and urban poor communities still lack access to cooling, including refrigeration and air conditioning. How many ACs would the world require to cool the entire human population? Explained: Global warming pushing billions to buy air conditioners. Here’s how that’s adding to climate change

New York City&nbsp;may soon sink under the sea predicts a new research. The city is sinking due to the weight of its towering skyscrapers. Coupled with the rising sea levels, this weight is pushing New York under at an average rate of 1-2 millimetres per year; some areas are sinking at twice this rate.&nbsp;Since 1950, the water surrounding New York City has risen by approximately 9 inches (22 centimetres).&nbsp;The rising water levels are a looming&nbsp;threat to&nbsp;the&nbsp;8.4 million people of the city.

Researchers behind the study published in the Earth’s Future journal warn that "a deeply concentrated population of 8.4 million people faces varying degrees of hazard from inundation in New York City."

<h2>Why is New York sinking?</h2>

New York's iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, or rather their weight, are causing the city&nbsp;to sink.

As per the research estimates, New York City's buildings, including iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, weigh a total of 1.68 trillion pounds — equivalent to the weight of 140 million elephants. This enormous weight pushes down on a mixture of different materials beneath the city, causing it to sink just a little bit every year.&nbsp;

It says that while the city's largest buildings are constructed on solid bedrock, such as schist, the ground beneath also contains a mixture of sand and clays. This mixture contributes to the natural sinking occurring along much of the US east coast as the land adjusts to the retreat of glaciers following the last ice age.

<h2>Were the iconic buildings a mistake?</h2>

Tom Parsons, a geophysicist at the US Geological Survey, and lead author of the research emphasised&nbsp;that constructing large buildings in New York was not a mistake, but it is essential to consider that each new construction further compresses the ground.

He said that the softer the soil, the more the buildings compress it.

Parsons&nbsp;explains that while there is no immediate cause for panic, the ongoing sinking process increases the vulnerability to flooding.

"It’s not something to panic about immediately, but there’s this ongoing process that increases the risk of inundation from flooding."

<h2>Is it just New York that risks sinking?</h2>

No, the threat exists for all the coastal cities worldwide.

Researchers caution that it's not just New York that faces this danger. The risks, as per the authors, will be shared by many other coastal cities around the world as the climate crisis deepens.&nbsp;

They assert that the combination of tectonic and human-induced subsidence, along with other factors, all indicate a growing danger for coastal and riverfront regions.

"The combination of tectonic and anthropogenic subsidence, sea level rise, and increasing hurricane intensity imply an accelerating problem along coastal and riverfront areas."

<h2>Any previous research to support this?</h2>

A March 2022 study&nbsp;indicated that India's financial capital Mumbai,&nbsp;with a population of approximately 20 million, is experiencing a gradual sinking at an average rate of 2 mm per year.

The research, titled "Subsidence in Coastal Cities Throughout the World," highlighted that it is not just Mumbai.

As per the study,&nbsp;Tianjin, located in China, holds the distinction of being the fastest-sinking coastal city worldwide, with a subsidence rate of 5.2 cm per year.

Apart from Tianjin and Mumbai, the study examined land subsidence in 99 countries around the world. It identified additional coastal cities experiencing sinking, such as Jakarta in Indonesia (3.44 cm per year), Shanghai in China (2.94 cm per year), and Ho Chi Minh (2.81 mm per year) and Hanoi (2.44 cm per year) in Vietnam.

<h2>How is climate change causing these decades-old cities to sink?</h2>

The sinking, as per the study, is intensified by&nbsp;the impact of sea level rise, which is already occurring at approximately twice the global average due to the melting of glaciers and the expansion of seawater caused by global warming.&nbsp;

The research warns that by the end of the century, major flooding events from storms could occur up to four times more frequently due to the combined effects of sea level rise and climate change-fuelled hurricanes.

<h2>Are there any examples of how global warming is exacerbating the problem in New York?</h2>

In 2012 and then in 2021, New York City has already experienced the devastating impacts of flooding.

Hurricane Sandy in 2012 caused extensive damage and power outages, including flooding in the New York subway system. In 2021, Hurricane Ida led to further flooding and loss of life in the city.&nbsp;

Scientists have attributed the severity of both these disasters to the damning effects of global warming.

<h2>How can we protect iconic cities like New York and Mumbai?</h2>

As per Parsons, proactive&nbsp;planning is the way. He stressed that proactive planning is important for New York and other coastal cities. He said that vulnerable cities "have to get planning for this. If you get repeated exposure to seawater, you can corrode steel and destabilise buildings, which you clearly don’t want. Flooding also kills people, too, which is probably the greatest concern."
