The condition is especially serious in the Bay of Kiel, Mecklenburg Bay, and Arkona Basin, where Rugia Island is located. The local porpoise population is also in jeopardy."

A deposit between six million to 250 million metric tonnes of hydrogen, or naturally occurring hydrogen gas, was found by Jacques Pironon and Phillipe De Donato, who are the directors of research at France's National Centre of Scientific Research, CNN reported.&nbsp;

Japan issued a tsunami advisory for some coastal regions early on Monday. The advisory, as per reports, was issued after a series of shallow earthquakes in the Izu islands in the Pacific Ocean. However, later the warning was lifted.

A Reuters report citing Japan's national broadcaster NHK said that the tsunami had already arrived in some island areas, where waves as high as 60 centimetres (24 inches) were reported.

The advisory was issued after an earthquake near Torishima Island at 5:25 am JST on Monday (8:25 pm GMT, Sunday), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).&nbsp;

As per figures by the United States Geological Survey, the quake measured&nbsp;4.9 on the Richter scale.

The US agency also reported a series of shallow quakes in the Izu islands. The strongest one, a 5.4 magnitude tremor, was recorded at 5:17 am (2117 GMT Sunday) around 551 kilometres south of Shimoda.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, 280 kilometres (170 miles) south of Tokyo, Hachijojima island was hit by tsunami waves of height 60 centimetres (24 inches). Smaller tsunami waves of 40cm and 20 cm were recorded in the western Kochi prefecture and southern Miyazaki prefecture, respectively.

Seismologists from JMA, as per an AFP report, said there were no immediate reports of damage from the minor waves generated.

However, despite that, Tateyama city of Chiba, located near Tokyo, had urged residents in coastal areas to evacuate after the advisory.

During a press conference, JMA official Toshihiro Shimoyama warned that "it is dangerous in the sea and near the coast".

“The headline number is $140bn a year and, first of all, that’s already a big number,” said Prof Ilan Noy as quoted by The Guardian. Prof Noy is from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. He carried out the study with colleague Rebecca Newman.

“Second, when you compare it to the standard quantification of the cost of climate change [using computer models], it seems those quantifications are underestimating the impact of climate change.”

Noy noted that there was no data of people killed or of economic damage caused due several extreme weather events.

“That indicates our headline number of $140bn is a significant understatement,” he said.

As an example, &nbsp;he said that heatwave death data was available only in case of Europe.

&nbsp;“We have no idea how many people died from heatwaves in all of sub-Saharan Africa.”

CRH's survey highlighted that public sector banks are particularly vulnerable to large capital shortfalls due to adverse climate shocks.

CRH’s report noted, "Extreme weather events in 2022 claimed 3,026 lives and affected crop areas. Preparedness for climate risks means that they have to be measured and managed. And this is exactly where Indian banks are lagging."

India faced another year of climate-related disasters in 2023, with flooding and landslides in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh resulting in significant loss of life and property. The financial toll is estimated to be substantial, highlighting the urgent need for banks to address climate risks.

The report also emphasized the importance of joining international climate initiative associations, such as the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF) and the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). These associations provide expertise and guidance on climate accounting and reporting.

GHG accounting, a critical aspect of addressing climate risks, involves measuring greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O). It's crucial for financial institutions to measure and report their Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions) emissions. However, Scope 3 emissions, which encompass emissions from a company's value chain, remain challenging to measure but are vital for financial institutions to track.

According to CRH's data, only 10 out of the 34 banks have begun disclosing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, with 8 of them also starting to disclose some Scope 3 emissions. Notably, none of the banks have calculated the impact of different climate scenarios on their portfolios. Furthermore, only 10 banks have disclosed the amount of green finance disbursed, and none have set comprehensive net-zero targets covering all three scope emissions.

CRH has urged Indian banks to take concrete steps towards aligning with India's climate goals. This includes increased lending for the country's energy transition targets, transparent disclosure of climate-related figures, and ensuring that fossil fuel-dependent industries they finance develop science-based transition plans. While marine creatures like fish and whales rely on plankton as a food source, excessive blooms can deplete oxygen from the water, leading to the death of fish, shellfish, and other aquatic life.&nbsp;

This disruption sets off a chain reaction, wreaking havoc on the natural food chains and also fisheries in the area.

Marine scientist Tanuspong Pokavanich, as quoted by Reuters, says, "This is the first time that I've seen this much (plankton) since I was born, which means it is very severe this year."&nbsp;

Approximately a quarter of Thailand's Upper Gulf is presently affected, with roughly half appearing green, while the other portion nearer the shore has turned brown due to pollution and the presence of deceased plankton, notes the scientist.

Tanuspong explains the fate of the plankton: "The plankton in the water will (either) consume all the nutrients and thrive, or they will die due to a lack of light. Their carcasses will then sink to the seabed and decompose." This decomposition process contributes to low oxygen conditions in the water, further impacting marine life.

<h3>Fisheries impacted</h3>

Along this coastline, more than 260 mussel farming plots float, and over 80 per cent of them have already borne the brunt of the bloom, reports an official from the Chonburi Fisheries Association.

According to data from the Department of Fisheries in 2021, Chonburi typically produces 2,086 tonnes (4.6 million lbs) of mussels annually, valued at 26,655,000 Thai Baht ($1 million).

Suchat Buawat, a 47-year-old local fisherman with over 10 farming plots, points to the devastation: "The damage appears to be 100 percent. See, they just fall off when you shake it. There are no live ones left, they're all dead, including the oysters too. Normally, they would cling (to the rope) here." He estimates that he has already borne losses that surpass 500,000 baht ($14,000).

The precise cause behind the emerald-hued seawater remains under investigation. Scientists like Tanuspong are reportedly exploring potential links to climate change and natural phenomena like El Niño.&nbsp;

The NHC as per a Reuters report said that it expects the powerful storm to near Mexico's popular Cabo San Lucas resort city by late Friday. The US government agency said that the hurricane should weaken before hitting the US West Coast this weekend. However, they warned that nevertheless, it will bring dangerous rains.

"If you've got weekend plans, it's probably time to start altering those plans," said NHC Deputy Director Jamie Rhome, as per the report. Rhome warned that the area from San Diego to Los Angeles and Las Vegas faced flood risks, in particular Palm Springs area will be at high risk when the storm hits this weekend.

As per the NHC advisory, hurricane Hilary was moving West northwest at nearly 12 mph or 19 kilometres per hour. The storm is packing a maximum sustained wind of nearly 130 mph or 215 kilometres per hour. It was upgraded to a category 4 storm overnight.&nbsp;

Rhome said that while icy waters of the California coastline typically weaken hurricanes and tropical storms, "this system is expected to hold on to its strength because it will be moving fast."

Shortly after the massive tremor struck Bogotá, an aftershock of magnitude 5.9 followed, as reported by the CGS on social media. As per Reuters, another&nbsp;aftershock was measured at 4.8 magnitude.

Netizens reported that the earthquake was also felt in nearby cities, including Villavicencio, Bucaramanga, Tunja, and Ibague. All of these are located in the vicinity of the quake's epicentre.

In 2023, the sea ice minimum reached levels 20 per cent lower than the average levels recorded in the last 40 years. This, as per Tim Naish, director of the Antarctic Research Centre at New Zealand's Victoria University of Wellington, equals to sea loss nearly 10 times the area of New Zealand. Naish was not a part of this study.

"In some cases we are getting close to tipping points, which once crossed will lead to irreversible changes with unstoppable consequences for future generations," he added.

As per Caroline Holmes, one of the study's co-authors, "It's going to take decades if not centuries for these things to recover. There's no quick fix to replacing this ice."

"It will certainly take a long time, even if it's possible," said Holmes, a polar climate scientist at British Antarctic Survey.

However, as per Martin Siegert, a glaciologist at the University of Exeter and a co-author of the study, it's "scientifically reasonable" to assume that extreme events are going to get more frequent.
