Rishi Ram Kandel, a spokesperson for Nepali police, told reporters that "two bodies have been recovered, but 28 people are missing".&nbsp;

"We have intensified the search and rescue operation," he added.

In the neighbouring district of Panchthar, the landslides and floods resulted in the loss of two lives. Among the victims was a nine-year-old girl from Phalelung Rural Municipality-3. As per The Kathmandu Post, her house&nbsp;was struck by a landslide on Saturday night. After a search operation by locals that lasted for seven hours, she was eventually rescued from the debris. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at Panchthar District Hospital on Sunday afternoon.

Investment in energy-efficient technologies and the fostering of a culture of energy conservation become pivotal steps in mitigating the carbon footprint that engulfs us. But for that to happen quickly, wealthy nations and multinational corporations need to share green technologies with vulnerable societies honestly.&nbsp;

Agriculture provides livelihoods for 2.5 billion people and is the largest source of income and jobs for poor, rural households. In developing countries, agriculture accounts for 29 per cent&nbsp;of GDP and 65 per cent of jobs. In developing nations, agrarian communities battle the ravages of erratic rainfall patterns that disrupt agricultural cycles, thrusting them into the jaws of abject food insecurity.

There is an urgent need for free access to climate-smart technologies, such as drought-resistant seeds and efficient irrigation systems, to empower vulnerable farmers to adapt to the ceaseless mutations of their ecological tapestries.

The need of the hour is collaborative synergies between governments, non-governmental organisations, and communities that will engender adaptation initiatives that remain firmly rooted in local realities, thus maximising efficacy.

Moreover, the preservation and restoration of fragile ecosystems emerge as milestones in mitigating climate change. Another tried and tested method is: rewilding. Taking a step back and allowing nature to heal itself naturally is the most logical step. Rewilding mitigates climate change by restoring ecosystems, reviving wildlife, and enhancing biodiversity. These rejuvenated ecosystems act as carbon sinks, effectively sequestering CO2, regulating the global carbon cycle, and reducing emissions.

Shielding forests, mangroves, and other natural habitats not only safeguards biodiversity but also serves as a bulwark against the inexorable march of carbon dioxide. Reforestation endeavours and sustainable land management practices emerge.

As per them, the talks stand the risk of getting "severely jeopardised by having an oil company executive at the helm".

The US signatories include two dozen members of Congress, as well as Senators Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Sheldon Whitehouse.&nbsp;

Among the nearly 100 EU signatories are leaders from the Green Party, The Left, and the Socialists &amp; Democrats.&nbsp;

However, according to a report by Sustainable Energy for All, an estimated 1.2 billion people living in rural and urban poor communities still lack&nbsp;access to cooling, including refrigeration and air conditioning.

To meet the growing cooling needs, the Centre for Sustainable Cooling estimates that the world would require an additional 14 billion cooling devices by 2050. This is nearly four times the current number of 3.6 billion devices.

Furthermore, the volume of electricity required to power all these cooling devices, as estimated by the Centre, would amount to more than 80 per cent of the IEA's projected renewable capacity for 2050. In the worst-case scenario where new technologies for improving appliance efficiency are not adopted, this figure could surpass 100 per cent.

The report warns that even with improving AC efficiency, if renewable energy capacity does not continue to expand, the impact of millions more air conditioners would be far more significant. By 2030, it could result in over 2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per year, surpassing the entire emissions of the European Union in 2021.

As per the research estimates, New York City's buildings, including iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, weigh a total of 1.68 trillion pounds — equivalent to the weight of 140 million elephants. This enormous weight pushes down on a mixture of different materials beneath the city, causing it to sink just a little bit every year.&nbsp;

It says that while the city's largest buildings are constructed on solid bedrock, such as schist, the ground beneath also contains a mixture of sand and clays. This mixture contributes to the natural sinking occurring along much of the US east coast as the land adjusts to the retreat of glaciers following the last ice age.

A new study reflects on the climate crisis and global warming as it reveals that more than half of the world's largest lakes and reservoirs are drying up.&nbsp;

The study which was published on Thursday in the journal Science highlighted that climate change and human activities are endangering lakes, which hold 87 per cent of the world's liquid surface fresh water. However, contemporary trends and sources of lake volume change are largely unknown around the world.&nbsp;

The study titled — Satellites reveal widespread decline in global lake water storage — examined the 1972 largest global lakes using three decades of satellite observations, climate data, and hydrologic models.&nbsp;

The study is aimed at finding statistically significant storage declines for 53 per cent of these water bodies over the period 1992–2020.&nbsp;

According to the study, the net volume loss in natural lakes is largely attributable to global warming, increasing evaporative demand, and human water consumption. Meanwhile, sedimentation is a dominant reason for storage losses in reservoirs.&nbsp;

<h2>'Lakes are in trouble'</h2>

The authors of the study noted that roughly one-quarter of the world's population resides in a basin of a drying lake, underscoring the necessity of incorporating climate change and sedimentation impacts into sustainable water resources management.

Balaji Rajagopalan, a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder and co-author of the paper, which appeared in Science, told news agency AFP: "Lakes are in trouble globally, and it has implications far and wide."&nbsp;

"It really caught our attention that 25 per cent of the world's population is living in a lake basin that is on a declining trend," he said, indicating that around two billion people are impacted by the findings. Rajagopalan also said that unlike rivers, lakes aren't well-monitored despite their critical importance for water security.

The findings suggest that 53 per cent of lakes and reservoirs saw a decline in water storage, at a rate of approximately 22 gigatonnes a year.&nbsp;

During the entire study period, 603 cubic kilometres of water were lost, which is 17 times the amount of water in Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States.&nbsp;

Rajagopalan said, "The climate signal pervades all factors."&nbsp;

Fangfang Yao, who is the lead author and a visiting fellow at CU Boulder, added in a statement: "Many of the human and climate change footprints on lake water losses were previously unknown, such as the desiccations of Lake Good-e-Zareh in Afghanistan and Lake Mar Chiquita in Argentina."

The study which was published on Thursday in the journal Science highlighted that climate change and human activities are endangering lakes, which hold 87 per cent of the world's liquid surface fresh water. However, contemporary trends and sources of lake volume change are largely unknown around the world. The study titled — Satellites reveal widespread decline in global lake water storage — examined the 1972 largest global lakes using three decades of satellite observations, climate data, and hydrologic models. The study is aimed at finding statistically significant storage declines for 53 per cent of these water bodies over the period 1992–2020. According to the study, the net volume loss in natural lakes is largely attributable to global warming, increasing evaporative demand, and human water consumption. Meanwhile, sedimentation is a dominant reason for storage losses in reservoirs. Balaji Rajagopalan, a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder and co-author of the paper, which appeared in Science, told news agency AFP: "Lakes are in trouble globally, and it has implications far and wide." "It really caught our attention that 25 per cent of the world's population is living in a lake basin that is on a declining trend," he said, indicating that around two billion people are impacted by the findings. Rajagopalan also said that unlike rivers, lakes aren't well-monitored despite their critical importance for water security. The findings suggest that 53 per cent of lakes and reservoirs saw a decline in water storage, at a rate of approximately 22 gigatonnes a year. During the entire study period, 603 cubic kilometres of water were lost, which is 17 times the amount of water in Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States. Rajagopalan said, "The climate signal pervades all factors." Fangfang Yao, who is the lead author and a visiting fellow at CU Boulder, added in a statement: "Many of the human and climate change footprints on lake water losses were previously unknown, such as the desiccations of Lake Good-e-Zareh in Afghanistan and Lake Mar Chiquita in Argentina."
