The German government has expressed a hope that this initiative will help to reduce the number of people using cars and, as a result, cut down the country's carbon footprint.

Transport Minister Volker Wissing labelled the initiative "the biggest public transport reform in German history."&nbsp;

However, the initiative's&nbsp;success is far from assured. According to the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), it is expected that only about 16 million people out of Germany's total population of 84 million will take advantage of the new flat-rate travel card.&nbsp;

Around 750,000 tickets have already been sold, but this number does not include those who plan to switch from their current transport subscriptions to the new initiative.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;travel card has been welcomed by environmental groups as an important step towards fighting climate change.

Talking to AFP, transport expert Oliver Wittig said that the 49-euro ticket will particularly benefit "urban residents who already have a more expensive subscription."

The financing of Germany's new flat-rate travel card was the subject of lengthy debate, which contributed to the delay in its rollout.

Eventually, an agreement was reached between the federal government and the country's states to each contribute 1.5 billion euros towards the financing of the initiative. This was done to avoid adding to the national rail operator's existing debt pile.

Despite this, the expenditure has faced criticism from the opposition, who argue that the money could have been better spent to " improve and renovate rail infrastructure."&nbsp;

The criticism of the expenditure on the flat-rate travel card has highlighted the significant investment needed to fix Germany's rail network. Official estimates suggest that around 8.6 billion euros a year will be required over the next decade to maintain and improve the network.

This, according to AFP, is more than double the 8.63 GW which Greenpeace reported for the same time period last year&nbsp;and surpasses the 18.55 GW approved for the entirety of 2021.

Most of the newly approved coal projects, as per AFP, are in provinces that, during the last two years, have suffered "punishing power shortages" due to record heatwaves. Others are in the southwest part of the country where last year, a record drought significantly cut down the hydropower output.

In February, the Global Energy Monitor (GEM) released a study according to&nbsp;which last year China approved the largest expansion of coal-fired power plants since 2015.

Last year, China reportedly relied on coal for nearly 60 per cent of its electricity needs.

Greenpeace experts cautioned that investing in additional fossil-fuel plants to cope with the surge in air conditioning would generate a vicious cycle: higher greenhouse gas emissions from the coal plants would accelerate global warming, leading to more frequent extreme weather events like the heat waves China experienced in the past couple of years.

Beijing is also the world's largest and fastest-growing producer of renewable energy. Xie says that the nation's power sector can still peak emissions by 2025, but that emissions released today will continue to linger in the atmosphere for decades.

It claims that the media coverage doesn't inspire the pro-environmental behaviours needed to address the problem.&nbsp;The study has been published in the Global Environmental Change scientific journal. For it, researchers analysed around 50,000 scientific publications on climate change for the year 2020 and examined which ones made it into the mainstream media.

They found that the media tends to pick research within the natural science field. There was also an evident focus on large-scale climate-based projections that won't happen for many years, reports AFP.

Researchers warned that this approach could cause a "possible distancing reaction on the part of the public."

"On the contrary, the media's selective choice of certain elements of climate change research could backfire, provoking denial and avoidance."

Co-author Marie-Elodie Perga, a professor at the UNIL Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics, suggested&nbsp;that media should strive to "show that climate change has direct consequences on our lifestyles, our immediate environment or our finances".

Another study co-author, Fabrizio Butera, a UNIL psychology professor warned&nbsp;that such coverage can be harmful and that "individuals exposed to these facts, not feeling directly concerned by them, will tend towards a peripheral, superficial and distracted treatment of the information."

"If the goal of mediating research is to have a societal impact, then it seems that we are pushing all the buttons that don't work," said Perga.

They suggested that in order to inspire action, the media should present environmental issues in a "solution-oriented way" and strive to demonstrate how climate change has direct consequences on our lifestyles, our immediate environment, or our finances.&nbsp;

The researchers argued that fear can lead to behavioural change, but only if the problem presented is accompanied by solutions. Research on human behaviour has shown that people are more likely to take action when they believe there is a way to mitigate the problem. Selective and purely descriptive articles that only highlight the negative aspects of climate change can be counterproductive and may result in people ignoring the problem altogether. Thus, they said it is essential to emphasise potential solutions and inspire a sense of empowerment to address the issue, rather than solely focusing on the negative impacts of climate change.

The United Nations stated on Friday that the world's glaciers dissipated significantly last year and that saving them is essentially a lost cause as climate change indicators once again reached record highs.&nbsp;According to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO)&nbsp;of the UN, the past eight years have been the warmest ever observed, and greenhouse gas concentrations, such as carbon dioxide, have reached new highs.

"Antarctic sea ice fell to its lowest extent on record and the melting of some European glaciers was, literally, off the charts," the WMO spelled out as it launched its annual climate overview.&nbsp;

Sea levels have also reached a new high, rising by an average of 4.62 millimetres annually between 2013 and 2022, which is twice as quickly as it did between 1993 and 2002.

The oceans, where around 90 per cent&nbsp;of the heat trapped on Earth by greenhouse gases ends up, had record-high temperatures.

According to the WMO study, the global mean temperature in 2022 was 1.15 C higher than the 1850–1900 average.

Despite the cooling effects of a long La Nina weather phenomenon that lasted for nearly half of that period, record global mean temperatures for the preceding eight years were nevertheless achieved.

Based on the analysis, global greenhouse gas concentrations hit new highs in 2021.

Globally, carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations reached 415.7 parts per million, or 149 per cent of pre-industrial levels (1750), while methane concentrations reached 262 per cent and nitrous oxide concentrations reached 124 per cent.

Between October 2021 and October 2022, the average thickness of the world's reference glaciers—those for which long-term measurements are available—decreased by more than 1.3 metres, a loss far greater than the average over the previous ten years.

Since 1970, there has been a total loss of about 30 metres of thickness. 
Due to a combination of insufficient winter snow, a saharan dust invasion in March 2022, and heatwaves between May and early September, the Alps broke records for glacier melt in Europe.

"We have already lost the melting of the glaciers game, because we already have such a high concentration of CO2," WMO chief Petteri Taalas told AFP in an interview.

In the Swiss Alps, "last summer we lost 6.2 percent of the glacier mass, which is the highest amount since records started," he said.

"This is serious," he said, explaining that the disappearance of the glaciers would limit freshwater supplies for humans and for agriculture, and also harm transport links if rivers become less navigable.&nbsp;These kind of things are going to be a big risk for the future," said Taalas.

"Many of these mountain glaciers will disappear, and also the shrinking of the Antarctic and Greenland glaciers will continue for a long-term basis -- unless we create a means to remove CO2 from the atmosphere," he continued.

AFP reports that Colombia's SGC geological service has warned of a "probable eruption within days or weeks."

The agency said that another eruption was "a probability for which authorities must be prepared," and urged the population to remain calm and to follow warnings and updates.

Nevado del Ruiz volcano is a 17,400-foot (5,300-meter) colossus volcano in Western Columbia. Its last eruption on November 13, 1985,&nbsp;is considered one of the worst natural disasters in Colombian history and also one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century. The heat from the 1985 eruption melted the snow that caps mountains in surrounding areas; triggering a mudslide which as per AFP "swallowed" the town of Armero and killed around half of its population of 50,000.
