Last year's Hurricane Fiona was the costliest extreme weather event on record in Atlantic Canada. It claimed 29 lives and, as per AFP, caused over $3 billion in damages. The large, powerful and destructive category-four Atlantic hurricane, hit communities in the Antilles, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, before moving on to strike Canada as a strong post-tropical cyclone in mid-September.

In southern California, United States, the ongoing "winter weather drama" took a wilder turn as a tornado on Wednesday tore through the city, ripping roofs off of buildings and smashing cars around. The tornado, as per AFP, raked the city of Montebello near Los Angeles. Residents were left scrambling for safety as the storm destroyed cars, broke windows and created a "mess." Aerial pictures taken after the tornado showed several roofs with holes in them, pipes and other installations twisted and broken, and vehicles appear to have been dragged out of their parking spaces.

Speaking to broadcaster KTLA, one local business owner described his experience of suddenly coming face to face with the storm and said he was driving when he "saw this tornado in front of me and had to reverse out."

The National Weather Service (NWS) said it was investigating the "weak tornado," and another one that hit Carpinteria, near Santa Barbara. The two storms, as per the weather agency, had winds of up to 85 miles an hour.

As per NWS, the southern Californian storm "damaged around 25 mobile home units and there was minor tree damage to the cemetery adjacent to the mobile home park."

Nevertheless, "this is a pretty significant tornado by (California) standards since it hit a populated area, clearly caused damage, and may have caused injuries," writes meteorologist Daniel Swain on Twitter.

Small tornado in California leaves cars and buildings damaged

The United Nations-backed Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has released what is being described as a sobering report, with the bottom line being that the time on saving the planet is running out. The Synthesis Report of the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) was published on Monday (March 21) and is likely the final one of the series.&nbsp;

Why is the report important?

The mammoth Synthesis Report (SYR) of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) comprised some of the most crucial findings about the knowledge of climate change, its impact and risks and how they can be mitigated and adapted to.&nbsp;

The important summary was a part of the six-part research which has now been completed after five years and draws on the findings of hundreds of scientists to provide a comprehensive assessment of the climate crisis. The 37-page document was made following a week of deliberations in Interlaken, Switzerland.&nbsp;

Extreme weather events are set to intensify

The findings also come as the world is witnessing the adverse effects of human-induced climate change including extreme weather events and widespread changes in our natural ecosystems, said the report. Additionally, these effects have also impacted people particularly, “Vulnerable communities who have historically contributed the least to current climate change are disproportionately affected,”&nbsp;the report noted.&nbsp;

It also said that there is very little chance of keeping the world from warming by more than 1.5 degree Celsius, which the governments had previously pledged to avoid. However, since the global temperature has also risen by 1.1 degrees Celsius experts said that there is a chance it might breach the 1.5 degree Celsius threshold. The report has also said that the impacts related to this rise in temperature are also set to intensify.&nbsp;

According to the report, approximately 3.3-3.6 billion people are “highly vulnerable” to climate change while increasing weather and climate extreme events have exposed millions of people to acute food insecurity and reduced water security. The IPCC report also notes the disparity between rich nations and poorer countries, as the former has largely contributed to the rise in carbon dioxide emissions during industrialisation.&nbsp;

The emissions which to this day are present in the air but the brunt of which is being witnessed by the citizens of poorer countries who suffer due to the extreme weather events and are “up to 15 times more likely to die in floods, droughts and storms,”&nbsp;said Science panel chief Hoesung Lee as per Associated Press.&nbsp;

Rise in temperature and concentration of&nbsp;greenhouse gases&nbsp;

“It is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land,”&nbsp;said the IPCC report, while also recognising the role of natural changes to the Earth’s climate. However, the report finds that out of the 1.07 degrees Celsius of the 1.09 degrees Celsius of the Earth’s global surface temperature rise is due to greenhouse gases associated with human activities.&nbsp;

“It has always been clear in the IPCC and in climate science, that it's not very likely that we always will stay below 1.5 degrees Celsius”, said Dr Oliver Geden a member of the report’s core writing team, as per BBC. Extreme heat events have resulted in human mortality and morbidity, the report stated and heat waves as well as heavy rain has become more frequent and intense since the 1950s.&nbsp;

The increases in well-mixed greenhouse gas concentrations are “unequivocally” caused by human activities and their consequential emissions. At least 42 per cent of the current cumulative net carbon dioxide emissions occurred between 1990 and 2019, said the report.&nbsp;

In 2019, the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere was higher than at any time in at least two million years while the concentration of methane and nitrous oxide was higher than at any time in at least 800,000 years.&nbsp;

Is it too late?

Once the global temperatures cross the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold, “the risks are starting to pile on,” said report co-author Francis X. Johnson to Associated Press. The report also mentions “tipping points” around that temperature which include the extinction of species like coral reefs, irreversible melting of ice sheets and sea level rise of several metres.&nbsp;

While UN chief Antonio Guterres has insisted that “the 1.5 degree limit is achievable”, some scientists and authors of the report are sceptical and said that reaching that threshold is “inevitable,” reported AP.&nbsp;

The report also notes that if it continues its consumption of fossil fuels either existing now or proposed the temperature will rise to at least two degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times. Although the data is from a few years ago, it does not account for the rise in the use of coal and natural gas recently which has been attributed to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the authors of the report have also suggested numerous methods for adaptation which include reforms in agricultural practices, urban greening, and restoration of wetlands and upstream forest ecosystems have been effective in reducing flood risks and urban heat.&nbsp;

The report also calls for a combination of both non-structural and structural measures. Non-structural measures, like early warning systems, &nbsp;disaster risk management, climate services and social safety nets have broad applicability across multiple sectors, said the report.&nbsp;

The IPCC has also said that the emissions must be halved by the mid-2030s to limit the rise in temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius and called for countries and communities around the world to find ways to adapt to climate change with actions to reduce or avoid greenhouse gas emissions.&nbsp;

This also included the use of alternative energy options like wind and solar, using electric vehicles, promoting the use of public transport or enabling active mobility in urban areas like walking or cycling, and so on.&nbsp;

The IPCC chief told the AP that they do not tell nations what they need to do in order to limit the worst warming, adding “it’s up to each government to find the best solution.” He added, “The pace and scale of what has been done so far and current plans are insufficient to tackle climate change. We are walking when we should be sprinting.”&nbsp;

At least 42 per cent of the current cumulative net carbon dioxide emissions occurred between 1990 and 2019, said the report. The report also mentions “tipping points” around that temperature which include the extinction of species like coral reefs, irreversible melting of ice sheets and sea level rise of several metres. While UN chief Antonio Guterres has insisted that “the 1.5 degree limit is achievable”, some scientists and authors of the report are sceptical and said that reaching that threshold is “inevitable,” reported AP. The report also notes that if it continues its consumption of fossil fuels either existing now or proposed the temperature will rise to at least two degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times. Although the data is from a few years ago, it does not account for the rise in the use of coal and natural gas recently which has been attributed to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The report also calls for a combination of both non-structural and structural measures. Non-structural measures, like early warning systems, disaster risk management, climate services and social safety nets have broad applicability across multiple sectors, said the report. The IPCC has also said that the emissions must be halved by the mid-2030s to limit the rise in temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius and called for countries and communities around the world to find ways to adapt to climate change with actions to reduce or avoid greenhouse gas emissions. The IPCC chief told the AP that they do not tell nations what they need to do in order to limit the worst warming, adding “it’s up to each government to find the best solution.” He added, “The pace and scale of what has been done so far and current plans are insufficient to tackle climate change. Australia faces bush fire threat as temperatures reach two-year high of 40°C

At least 10 people have died across five southern US states as a series of storms battered them with damaging winds, golf-ball-sized hail and tornadoes. NBC reports that four people died in Kentucky, three perished in Alabama, and one each were found dead in Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. As per the website Poweroutage.us, the powerful storm system has also reportedly left more than 650,000 homes and businesses in Kentucky and Tennessee without power. Other estimates put the number of people left without power at more than one million.

The weather on Friday left 60 million people under the threat of a severe storm. Additionally, nearly 80 million people in Texas, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and more were under high wind alerts.

Terming it as "the world's first climate lawsuit against a commercial bank", Oxfam accused BNP Paribas of being Europe's largest funder of fossil fuel expansion. The bank has presence in 65 countries, and as per the lawsuit, it is the fifth largest funding source in the world for fossil fuel expansion.

"The three organizations urge the bank to immediately stop financing this expansion and to adopt an oil and gas exit plan," an official statement reads. The lawsuit was filed on February 23. "BNP Paribas, Europe's largest funder of fossil fuel expansion, is ignoring scientific truths and is reluctant to address this glaring issue," said Lorette Philippot, campaigner at Friends of the Earth France.

Huvier and his team collected genetic samples for a period of about 12 years, from 2008 to 2020. To avoid stress to an already suffering population, they only collected samples from injured, dead animals, or orphaned cubs. They managed to obtain 88 samples.

Scientists suggest that road signs warning of the lynx population in areas might help save them from road accidents. Additionally, replacing dead members of the population with individuals from healthier populations and the exchange of orphaned cubs between different wildlife rescue centres might help.

Citing the research institute, Reuters reports that the iceberg calved "following years of naturally occurring cracks that finally extended across the shelf and caused the new iceberg to break free".

"This calving event has been expected and is part of the natural behaviour of the Brunt Ice Shelf," said BAS glaciologist Dominic Hodgson. "It is not linked to climate change," he added.

As per Science Alert, in 2016-17, the Halley VI Research Station had to be relocated due to the widening of the Chasm-1. reportedly, at the time cracks started appearing in the ice, and this threatened to cut off the research facility. Since the relocation staff is deployed there during the Antarctic summer months between November and March. The rest of the year, when temperatures fall below minus 50 degrees Celsius (-58 degrees Fahrenheit) and it is dark for 24 hours, they operate remotely.

This is the second major calving incident in two years. Previously in May 2021, an iceberg four times the size of Abu Dhabi broke off from the Ronne Ice Shelf and fell into the ocean in Antarctica.

A study by the United Nations highlights an alarming figure about the dams across the world. The study noted that because of massive sediment clogging, close to 50,000 large dams worldwide could lose more than a quarter of their storage capacity by 2050.&nbsp;

The UN University's Institute for Water, Environment and Health conducted the study, which was published on Wednesday (January 11). It also suggested that action must be taken to address the problem and protect vital storage infrastructure.&nbsp;

As pr the study, silt accumulates in reservoirs as a result of the disruption of natural water flows and it can cause damage to hydroelectric turbines and cut power generation.&nbsp;

UN research warned that trapped sediment has robbed roughly 50,000 large dams worldwide of an estimated 13 per cent to 19 per cent of their combined original storage capacity, and total losses will reach 23 per cent to 28 per cent by 2050.&nbsp;

The United Nations University said that the dam capacity might face a global loss from the original dam capacity probably by mid-century from ~6,300 billion to ~4,650 billion m3 in 2050. The difference of—~1,650 billion m3—roughly equals the annual water use of India, China, Indonesia, France and Canada combined.&nbsp;

The study shows that the United Kingdom, Panama, Ireland, Japan and Seychelles will experience the highest water storage losses by 2050.&nbsp;

Dr Duminda Perera, who co-authored the study with UNU-INWEH Director Vladimir Smakhtin and Spencer Williams of McGill University in Montreal, said: "The decrease in available storage by 2050 in all countries and regions will challenge many aspects of national economies, including irrigation, power generation, and water supply".&nbsp;

Dr Perera added, "The new dams under construction or planned will not offset storage losses to sedimentation. This paper sounds an alarm on a creeping global water challenge with potentially significant development implications."&nbsp;
