In a bid to minimise, CO2 emissions, a few students have built a sustainable car model and showed their prototype on a US promotional tour to universities and companies. The car is called Zero Emission Mobility or ZEM.

An Oxfam report has revealed that the world's worst climate hotspots&nbsp;have seen a huge surge in acute hunger over the last six years. The report called on rich nations to drastically cut their emissions and compensate low-income countries. Titled "Hunger in a heating world",&nbsp;the analysis found that acute hunger had risen 123 per cent over six years in the 10 most-affected nations.&nbsp;

These nations include Somalia, Haiti, Djibouti, Kenya, Niger, Afghanistan, Guatemala, Madagascar, Burkina Faso and Zimbabwe. All of them have repeatedly witnessed extreme weather over the last two decades. As per reports compiled by the World Food Programme, an estimated 48 million people across these countries suffer acute hunger, up from 21 million people in 2016, with 18 million on the brink of starvation.

Acute hunger is defined as hunger resulting from a shock and causing risks to lives and livelihoods.

"The effects of severe weather events are already being felt," Lia Lindsey, Oxfam America's senior humanitarian policy advisory told AFP.&nbsp;

The report acknowledges that conflict and economic disruptions, including those caused by COVID-19, are a major cause for global hunger.

"However, these new and worsening weather extremes are increasingly peeling away the abilities of poor people, particularly in low-income countries, to stave off hunger and cope with the next shock," the report&nbsp;said.

Somalia, for example, is facing its worst drought on record, forcing one million people to flee their homes.&nbsp;

Climate change has also been leading to extreme weather conditions, such as intense heat waves and floods, which also deplete the food resources. For example, the floods in Pakistan washed away crops and topsoil and destroyed farming infrastructure.

In Guatemala, close to 80 per cent of the maize harvest has been lost owing to weather conditions, apart from causing a "coffee crisis" in the region that has hit vulnerable communities hardest and forced many to migrate to the United States.&nbsp;

Oxfam stressed that climate-fuelled hunger is a "stark demonstration of global inequality",&nbsp;with the countries least responsible for the crisis suffering most from its impact.

Polluting industrialized nations such as those of the G20 are responsible for more than three-quarters of the world's carbon emissions, while the 10 climate hotspots are collectively responsible for just 0.13 per cent.

"Leaders, especially of rich polluting countries, must live up to their promises to cut emissions," said Gabriela Bucher, Oxfam International executive director, in a statement.&nbsp;

'Earth is now our only shareholder': Patagonia's billionaire owner gives away company to save planet

According to a significant study, the climate catastrophe has brought the globe dangerously close to many "disastrous" tipping points.&nbsp;

It demonstrates that five perilous tipping thresholds may have already been crossed as a result of the 1.1 degrees C global warming brought on by human activity to date.&nbsp;

These include the abrupt melting of carbon-rich permafrost, the collapse of a major current in the north Atlantic, and the loss of Greenland's ice cap, all of which will result in significant sea level rises.
<img alt="Infographic" data-align="center" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="0add9f3b-e581-4976-9562-e4f52369d66a" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Screen%20Shot%202022-09-09%20at%2015.19.41.png" />
Four of the five tipping points go from being feasible to likely at 1.5 degrees C of heating, the minimum rise now anticipated, according to the research. Another five tipping points become likely at 1.5 degrees C, including modifications to huge northern forests and the disappearance of practically all alpine glaciers.&nbsp;

The researchers discovered evidence for 16 tipping points in total, the last six of which, in the scientists' estimations, would need to be triggered by global warming of at least 2 degrees C. The tipping points would occur throughout periods of time ranging from a few years to hundreds of years.

The researchers came to the conclusion that beyond 1C of global warming, "the Earth may have left a 'safe' climate state," with the whole history of human civilization has evolved in temperatures lower than this. When one tipping point is crossed, it frequently causes cascades by setting off subsequent ones. However, as this is currently under investigation and was left out of the analysis, there may be minimal risk.&nbsp;

The Amazon rainforest, the Greenland ice sheet, the Gulf Stream currents, and what scientists refer to as the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation are all showing signs of instability recently. Losing these ecosystems would have "profound" effects on the climate and biodiversity of the entire planet (Amoc).

According to a recent assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, with 2C of global warming, the chance of setting off climate tipping points increases.&nbsp;

More than 200 prior studies on historical tipping points, climatic measurements, and modelling studies were reviewed for the analysis, which was published in the journal Science. When a temperature threshold is crossed, a climate system reaches a tipping point that cannot be reversed, even if global warming stops.&nbsp;

The collapse of the Greenland, west Antarctic, and two portions of the east Antarctic ice sheets, the partial and complete collapse of Amoc, Amazon dieback, permafrost collapse, and the loss of winter sea ice in the Arctic are the nine global tipping points that have been identified.

The cost of living is ranked by most voters globally as a more important issue than liberating Ukraine from Russian occupation, but there is still strong support for a Russian military withdrawal, according to a survey showing global preoccupations.

The polling was conducted by Datapraxis and YouGov by the Open Society Foundations, a group funded by the businessman and philanthropist George Soros, and has been released ahead of the UN general assembly later this month in New York.

Majorities in 16 of the 22 largest countries believe Russia should leave the territory it has occupied in Ukraine, the survey shows. The polling in 22 countries of more than 21,000 citizens also underlines the extent to which the global south is less engaged with the war in Ukraine than Europeans.

Asked to list their top-three priority issues, voters more often cited the climate crisis and cost of living ahead of Ukraine. Even in the UK, the country with some of the most solid support for Ukraine, more voters cite climate change.

The climate emergency was the top priority, with 36% of respondents ranking it as one of the three most significant issues facing the world, compared with 28% who picked Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In all but three of the countries surveyed, fewer than 40% cited Ukraine as a top-three priority issue.

It will be examined closely by world leaders for signs of any fracture in support for the war in Ukraine in view of rising inflation and energy prices. Although the survey clearly shows Ukraine is globally viewed as less important than the climate crisis and the cost of living, Russia can take little solace from the poll.&nbsp;

For instance, there was also a strong plurality (49%) supporting the statement “war crimes are mostly being committed by Russia”, compared with 28% supporting the view that “war crimes are being committed by both sides”.

The long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns show that climate change is happening at a very fast pace. Continuous rise in temperatures, disruption of the usual balance of nature, changes in the intensity and frequency of precipitation, and warmer oceans, are some of the clear indications of climate change. Global calls have been raised to tackle the situation that is worsening with every single moment. Some climate scientists have suggested raising the number of phytoplankton present in the ocean can help remove more carbon from the atmosphere. ALSO READ | Research suggests now-extinct megalodon shark could devour killer whale in just five bites What are phytoplanktons? Phytoplanktons are microscopic marine algae. These single-celled photosynthetic organisms live suspended in water. They provide food for a wide range of sea creatures in a balanced ecosystem. Just like plants, they consume carbon dioxide, make carbohydrates using light energy, and release oxygen back into the atmosphere. John Martin, the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories oceanographer, said in 1988 that if someone gave him half a tanker of iron, he would somehow cause an ice age. The reference was the known fact that Iron is a crucial source of energy for the plankton community. It helps phytoplankton bloom. ALSO READ | 'The Calvine Photo': A myth or 'world's clearest' UFO photo that it released after 30 years? Even a small addition of iron may lead to a substantial increase in the production of phytoplankton and eventually reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. Well, scientists have also claimed that this approach would require further investigations. Meanwhile, Ken Buesseler, who is a marine radiochemist from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, investigated how and if adding iron changes the flux of carbon into the deep ocean. Reportedly, he discovered a sizable carbon-sequestering effect. Buesseler reportedly said that his research demonstrated unequivocally that increasing iron leads to the uptake of carbon dioxide. The research was completed nearly 20 years ago but it is more relevant now considering the climate crisis we are facing. Scientists suggest a rise in phytoplankton in oceans could help tackle climate change

An area equivalent to the size of one-fifth of Belgium has been destroyed by fires throughout Europe after a series of scorching heatwaves and a record-breaking drought, which might push&nbsp;the entire continent towards a record-breaking year for wildfire destruction, experts predict.

As per data revealed by the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis), 659,541 hectares of land burned over the continent between the time periods of January and August, which is the largest ever recorded since records began in 2006. The data stated that the total land area burned across the continent is twice as large as it was during 2006–2021. However, the overall number of fires has increased by more than four times.

The figures surpassed the previous record of 2017 by 56 per cent. Presently, over a million hectares of land could be destroyed by wildfires this year as anticipated by the current trends, The Guardian reported.

The statistics were made public after the European Union’s Copernicus atmosphere monitoring service (Cams), issued a warning last week stating that there was a severe fire hazard in Western Europe. According to Cams, active fires were higher than average in Spain, France, and Portugal in July and August.

Nearly 10,000 people were evacuated during the Landiras fire in France. It burned through 14,000 hectares in July. Similarly, a major wildfire that had been raging for a week in Serra da Estrela was brought under control by Portugal on Saturday.

However, in Spain, a fire in Zaragoza forced the evacuation of eight communities and 1,500 people after the authorities claimed that the fire was out of control and had destroyed nearly 8,000 hectares. According to Effis’s stats, the overall area burned in wildfires so far this year is nearly four times the nation’s full-year average of 66,965 hectares since 2006.

According to a Scottish government consultation, all new houses built in Scotland need to have more environment-friendly heating systems than gas or oil-fired boilers. This could be required by the law from April 2024 onwards.&nbsp;This plan was announced by Nicola Sturgeon’s administration with the intent to ban fossil fuel-based heating systems that directly emit carbon from being installed in the conversion of new properties and new construction projects.&nbsp;The Scottish government is looking for alternatives like solar electric energy and heat pumps to replace gas-fired boilers. Additionally, the government has emphasised on fittings with low carbon alternatives.

The feedback for this proposal is being sought until 20th October, 2022 and this pledge is one of the measures under the New Building Heat Standard (NBHS). Boilers running on oil or natural gas shall be banned under the NBHS and according to the Scottish government, research into hydrogen’s ability to provide zero emissions heat is required further.

Independent research commissioned by the Scottish Government has identified different options that complement the NBHS guidelines. Under this definition, heat pumps, heat networks, electric boilers, fuel cells etc. can be installed under the NBHS proposals. Further, direct electric heaters, such as fan heaters and radiant heaters are also considered compatible.

With the UK government aiming for a Future Homes Standard for England by banning the use of existing gas boilers in new properties from 2025, Scotland is aiming to move even faster. It aims to introduce a ban on systems that completely function on fossil fuels and contribute to direct carbon emissions to produce heat.

Scotland to move towards environment-friendly heating

The world is gearing up for the 27th&nbsp;Conference of Paris (COP). With nations preparing to meet again to deliberate the progress since the last COP26, here is a look into what is COP26, what were its key take always and what are the challenges on its way.

What is COP?

COP stands for Conference of the Parties. COP26 refers to the most recent annual climate change conference hosted by the UN. The most recent COP summit was hosted in a partnership between UK and Italy. It was conducted from 1-12 November 2021 in Glasgow.&nbsp;

This year, COP27 is to take place in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt. It is important to note that this conference is held every year by the world’s governments and is attended by the countries that signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).&nbsp;

What is UNFCCC?&nbsp;

The UNFCCC entered into force on March 21, 1994, and has been ratified by 197 countries. It was signed in 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development which is also known as the Earth Summit, the Rio Conference or the Rio Summit.&nbsp;

Which environmental issues were the main focus of COP26?

Coal: It is responsible for 40 per cent of annual CO2 emissions and 64 per cent of the world’s CO2 emissions. COP26 set targets to reduce the use of coal. The major takeaway was the agreement to work on the inefficient oil and gas subsidies i.e. the government payments that artificially lower the price of fossil fuels.

Deforestation: It is another significant global issue. More than 100 countries pledged to stop deforestation by 2030. It is noteworthy that these 100 countries have about 85 per cent of the world’s forests. Deforestation is a crucial issue as trees absorb nearly 10 per cent of CO2 which is emitted every year.&nbsp;

Climate finance: Finance is essential to combat climate issues at a global level. All the developed and rich countries have agreed to contribute nearly 72 billion pounds a year to developing countries for climate action by 2022 end. This pledge was missing in 2020 and hence, was an important part of COP26.

Methane: methane emission is a global climate challenge and is responsible for nearly a third of human-generated waste. At COP26, nearly 100 countries agreed to cut down on 30 per cent of methane emissions by 2030.&nbsp;

What was the key takeaway from COP26?

At COP26, countries were urged to strengthen their 2030 targets by COP27. It was targeted that global warming should not exceed +1.5 degrees Celsius. Nearly 140 countries announced set target dates for bringing down the emissions to a net zero.&nbsp;

The highlight of COP26 was the Glasgow climate pact. This pact was endorsed by 42 countries as a cooperative effort to accelerate the development and deployment of clean technologies. It also aims at sustainable solutions in areas such as clean power, road transport, steel and hydrogen.

What are the major challenges?

The targets set at COP26 are voluntary with no definitive penalties or enforcement mechanism in place. In fact, many targets are subject to provisions based on the availability of financial support. Further, there is a lack of clarity on particular actions that will be taken by countries to achieve the goals.&nbsp;

The biggest challenge arises with the carbon budget. Carbon budget distribution across the nations is widely questionable. For example, the top three emitters are China, the USA and Europe and account for about 30 per cent of the world’s population. This means that they would take up to 78 per cent of the carbon budget.

Thus, with active efforts to combat climate change and rectifications from COP26, COP27 might have a lot to offer in tackling the global climate crisis.&nbsp;

WION Explains | COP26: What, Why, How and Where?

A team of international experts headed by Cambridge University in England have issued a warning stating that even as nations set goals to reduce emissions, we should be prepared for failure in the future. They have cautioned that the world needs to start preparing for the possibility of a "climate endgame" as extreme weather events keep destroying the planet.&nbsp;This report highlights “four horsemen” of the climate endgame: extreme weather, conflict, infectious diseases and famine. According to this report, world leaders need to investigate the possible outcomes of climate change, ranging from a loss of 10 per cent of the global population to gradual human extinction.&nbsp;

Scientists have further noted that with the current level of emissions and population trends, two billion people could live in places with an annual average temperature of more than 84 degrees Fahrenheit. This extreme temperature trend is found in less than one per cent of Earth’s land surface area and is likely to happen within fifty years.&nbsp;

The ill effects of climate change have taken the world by storm. Across the globe, countries are battling wildfires, droughts and catastrophic flooding. Though the conversation has always been around preventing the situation from getting worse, the United Nations has issued a dire warning that requests all the nations to dig deeper into the issue.

Reportedly, in a recent conference at Petersberg on Climate Dialogue, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that "Half of humanity is in the danger zone from floods, droughts, extreme storms and wildfires. No nation is immune.”

A similar statement was given by Luke Kemp, PhD, with Cambridge's Centre for the Study of Existential Risk. Emphasizing the need of focusing on worst-case scenarios, he said, "Right now, I think we're being naive. We're not looking at the worst-case scenarios at all, really."

For years, scientists around the globe have been trying to cut down on carbon emissions which is one of the biggest contributors to Greenhouse gases and climate change; scientists are now turning to the sea for help.

Disasters are becoming more frequent and severe. As per a recent ‘horrifying’ officials study released on Monday, weather disasters brought by climate change have cost Germany at least 80 billion euros since the year 2018. The report commissioned by the economy and environment ministries, droughts, floods, and high heatwaves are&nbsp;to be blamed for a rough expenditure of 145 billion euros ($147 billion) in damages that occurred between 2000 and 2021 in Germany mostly occurred in recent years. In Europe’s largest economy, losses in revenue from industries like forestry and farming and damages to infrastructures totaled more than 80 billion euros since 2018, AFP reported.&nbsp;

Steffi Lemke, minister of environment said these horrifying facts showed ‘enormous damage and expenses’ of the climate crisis. Similarly, Robert Habeck, Economy Minister said that in order to keep the impact of the climate crisis at a reasonable level, the country needs to coexist with rapid global action.

The extremely hot and dry summer of 2018 and 2019, and the disastrous floods in the Rhineland a year ago were noted to be the prime destructive point, the study found which indicated accelerating consequences over time.

However, the authors of the study claim that because important aspects including the consequences for biodiversity and health effects were left out, the estimations made are certainly low.&nbsp;

The research was released as sections of Germany are predicted to experience heatwave gripping areas of Southwest Europe. With blaming climate change as the reason, extreme weather events will happen more frequently and intensely as to scientists.&nbsp;

The report commissioned by the economy and environment ministries, droughts, floods, and high heatwaves are to be blamed for a rough expenditure of 145 billion euros ($147 billion) in damages that occurred between 2000 and 2021 in Germany mostly occurred in recent years. In Europe’s largest economy, losses in revenue from industries like forestry and farming and damages to infrastructures totaled more than 80 billion euros since 2018, AFP reported. Climate crisis cost Germany at least 80 billion euros since 2018: Report

In a bid to combat the climate crisis, Los Angeles may likely ban the construction of new gas stations and may go all-electric. Once implemented, the car-reliant area will become the second city in California state to prohibit the construction of gas stations. The first city was Petaluma.

On Wednesday,&nbsp;Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Koretz announced&nbsp;that he is currently working on the policy along with several smaller cities across the US&nbsp;and Canada.

According to The Guardian, apart from Los Angeles (LA), other cities like Bethlehem, New York, and Comox valley regional district, British Columbia, are also working to bring policies that would stop the development of new fossil fuel infrastructure.

With its proposal,&nbsp;LA has inched closer to joining the SAFE City movement, a group of cities whose aim is to limit fossil fuel usage with local policies.&nbsp;

“We are ending oil drilling in Los Angeles. We are moving to all-electric new construction. And we are building toward fossil fuel-free transportation,” Paul Koretz, the LA council member who is working on the policy, was quoted as saying.

“Our great and influential city, which grew up around the automobile, is the perfect place to figure out how to move off the gas-powered car.”

Though there was no timeline provided as to when a draft ordinance or possible vote would be coming, officials said that Koretz is working to see the policy continue to advance by the end of 2022.

LA’s announcement came after a new report from SAFE Cities showed how gas stations pose numerous health, environmental, equity, and financial risks to communities.

Even small spills over time can significantly pollute soil and water and former gas stations make up a large portion of brownfield sites, the report states.

Amidst looming environmental crisis and rising sea level, a floating city is being made just 10-minute boat ride from Maldives’ Male city in the Indian Ocean.

According to CNN, the city will be designed resembling a brain coral. It will consist of 5,000 floating units including houses, restaurants, shops and schools, with canals running in between.

The first units will be unveiled this month (June), with prices starting at $150,000 for a studio apartment, and going up to $250,000 for a family home.

The developers are expecting residents to begin moving into the island in early 2024, with the whole city due to be completed by 2027.&nbsp;

The Maldives Floating City, developed jointly by the Dutch firm Waterstudio and the Maldives government, aims to house 20,000 people in less than five years.

Notably, this will be the second floating city in world. The first one was announced in April by the United Nations off South Korea’s second-largest city, Busan. Known as Oceanix City, it plans to provide homes for a community of 12,000 people, potentially rising to 100,000, with construction due to start in 2023.

This is "new hope" for the more than half a million people of the Maldives, said Koen Olthuis, founder of Waterstudio, the architecture firm that designed the city.

"It can prove that there is affordable housing, large communities, and normal towns on the water that are also safe. They (Maldivians) will go from climate refugees to climate innovators," he told CNN.

Features of Maldives Floating City includes rainbow-colored homes designed to attract local people. Wide balconies and seafront views are added onto each home. For transportation, residents will get around on boats, or they can walk, cycle or drive electric scooters or buggies.

“Tech is not the problem, but it is the regulatory framework that takes time to adjust,” Olthuis explained.

“Money talks and so this means when authorities understand that the cost of floating development are lower than the cost of destruction of waterfront infrastructure and properties then this next shift in city development will fly.”

Iraq is going through a climate crisis, there is water shortage, heat waves and sand storms that are engulfing entire cities. Iraq's latest crisis is not just a result of climate change, the man to blame here is late dictator Saddam Hussein whose political ecology has left the war-torn nation more vulnerable to climate crisis

Climate Crisis next big threat for Iraq

Climate change is real. Several factors like deforestation and extensive use of fossil fuels have led to a rise in earth's temperature. It has resulted in the melting of glaciers and a rise in sea levels. The worst sufferers of climate change will be coastal areas as they will face sinking due to the spike in the level of sea water. Can anything be done to stop it? Yes, the world can fight sea level rise. Let’s find out how.
