As of Wednesday night, Beryl was packing maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (209.21 km/h), said the NHC. While the force of the winds is expected to weaken somewhat in the next day or two, the NHC warned that Beryl would remain at or near major hurricane strength as it passed the Cayman Islands.

The Mexican government has prepared 112 shelters, each with a capacity to shelter around 20,000 people. Furthermore, schools have been suspended in the state of Quintana Roo, where Beryl is expected to hit with all its mighty force.

For its report, Oil Change International assessed the companies' plans on 10 criteria. It found that all eight big oil companies ranked as "grossly insufficient" or "insufficient" on nearly all criteria, reports The Guardian.&nbsp;

In a statement, Allie Rosenbluth, US programme manager at Oil Change International, said, "American fossil-fuel corporations are the worst of the worst."

The report has been endorsed by over 100 climate groups internationally and marks the fourth annual "Big Oil Reality Check" from Oil Change International.

In a statement, David Tong, co-author of the analysis, and global industry campaign manager at Oil Change International, said: "There is no evidence that big oil and gas companies are acting seriously to be part of the energy transition."

As per the report, the eight oil companies alone are on track to use 30 per cent&nbsp;of the world's remaining global carbon budget — to keep the global average temperature rise to 1.5C.

The report criticised the companies for their lack of ambition to curb fossil fuel exploration and production. None have plans to stop fossil fuel exploration or halt new extraction projects. In fact, six of the eight companies have explicit goals to increase oil and gas production.

Additionally, the report found that the companies' methods to curb greenhouse gas emissions lack integrity. <h2>The new Florida legislation</h2>

Starting July 1, the measure, as per a news release from the Florida governor's office, would also boost expansion of natural gas, reduce regulations on gas pipelines in the state and increase protections against bans on gas appliances such as stoves.

It also removes provisions mandating that state agencies shall hold meetings and conferences only in hotels or conference facilities that have received the "Green Lodging" designation from the Department of Environmental Protection "for best practices in water, energy, and waste efficiency standards, unless the responsible state agency head makes a determination that no other viable alternative exists."

As per a legislative analysis of the bill as published on the Florida Gov website, the priority is to ensure "an adequate, reliable and cost-effective supply of energy for the state in a manner that promotes the health and welfare of the public and economic growth".

Rising sea levels threaten Thailand's capital, Bangkok, with relocation, according to a senior official from the country's climate change office.

The low-lying Bangkok risks being submersed by the ocean before the end of the century, according to the projections. The bustling capital already battles flooding during the rainy season.

The city might not be able to adapt with the world on its current warming pathway, warned Pavich Kesavawong, deputy director-general of the government's department of climate change and environment.

Bangkok is considering building sea walls, similar to those in the Netherlands, to combat rising waters. However, relocation of the city is also being discussed, according to a government official.&nbsp;

Kesavawong emphasised that these talks are still in the early stages and that moving the capital would be a very complex undertaking.

"Personally I think it's a good choice, so we can separate the capital, the government areas, and business areas," he added.

"Bangkok would still be the government capital, but will move the business,” Kesavawong&nbsp;further said.

<h2>Climate impacts</h2>

Indonesia is another country facing a similar situation. It will&nbsp;inaugurate its new capital Nusantara this year, which will replace sinking Jakarta as the country's political centre.

Thailand is suffering the effects of climate change as farmers struggle&nbsp;with high temperature and drought, while tourism is affected by coral bleaching and pollution.

It has closed several national parks in response to recent coral bleaching while further closures are possible.

Despite government efforts, including new clean air legislation and increased fire prevention measures in national parks, air pollution, especially in northern Thailand, remains a significant challenge.

Red alert sounded in China amid fears of massive 'once-a-century' floods

In 2023, Asia earned a title that is anything but an achievement: the world's most disaster-hit region by climate-related hazards.

Asia was worst-hit with floods and storms causing the highest number of casualties last year,&nbsp;as per a report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released on Tuesday (Apr 23).

As per the United Nations agency Asia reported 79 disasters linked to hydro-meteorological events in 2023. Of these, more than 80 per cent were related to floods and storms and collectively had a death toll of over 2,000, while another nine million people were directly affected, said the WMO.

According to&nbsp;WMO, last year global temperatures rose to record highs, and Asia was warming faster than the rest of the world.

Rising temperatures, coupled with melting glaciers, threaten the region's future water security, said WMO.

In a statement, WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo said: "The report's conclusions are sobering."

"Many countries in the region experienced their hottest year on record in 2023, along with a barrage of extreme conditions, from droughts and heatwaves to floods and storms".

Furthermore, over the past several decades, the High-Mountain Asia region, centred on the Tibetan Plateau, recorded glaciers retreating at an increasingly accelerating rate.

Out of the 22 monitored glaciers in the region&nbsp;— which boasts the largest volume of ice outside the polar regions — 20 showed continued mass ice loss last year.

"It is imperative that our actions and strategies mirror the urgency of these times," stressed Saulo. "Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to the evolving climate is not merely an option, but a fundamental necessity."

According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office's&nbsp;(IMO)&nbsp;most recent measurements from April 9, it was pumping out some 3.6 cubic metres of lava per second.

"It's continuing at a pretty stable rate at the moment, and we don't see any real signs that it will end in the near future," IMO geophysicist Benedikt Ofeigsson told AFP.

As per the Washington Post, volcanic activity in the Reykjanes Peninsula had not been active for 800 years before the recent eruptions. Volcanologists believe that a new era of seismic activity has begun in the region.

The volcanic activity was reawakened in March 2021, when an eruption near Mount Fagradalsfjall lasted six months, reports AFP.

Magma, as per the report, is making its way through the Earth's upper crust from a depth of at least 10 kilometres (6.21 miles). Additionally, ground rising, also known as inflation, has been observed in the nearby area of Svartsengi, where a geothermal plant that provides electricity and water to 30,000 people on the peninsula is located.

The inflation&nbsp;as per geophysicist Benedikt Ofeigsson suggests that "all the magma coming from this depth doesn't have the capacity to go straight to the surface (and) is partly stored in this magma storage in Svartsengi."

A new study warns that climate change could cut global economic output by 20 per cent&nbsp;by 2050. Researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) published their findings in Nature on Wednesday (April 18).

As per the PIK’s calculations, countries meet ambitious emission-cutting&nbsp;goals, but as many of them fall short, the actual damage could be even worse.

The study estimates climate change could cost the global economy a staggering $38 trillion every year by 2050. This is six times more expensive than the estimated cost of limiting global temperatures to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The study further states that despite damage affecting various regions to different degrees, poorer regions and those contributing least to global warming will be hit hardest.

Anders Levermann, a senior PIK scientist, says, “Countries that are least responsible for climate change are expected to suffer income loss that is 60&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;more than the higher-income countries and 40&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;greater than higher-emission countries.”

The industrial economies of Germany and the United States would shrink by roughly 11 per cent&nbsp;by mid-century (13&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;for France), even if climate action is properly taken, according to the researchers.

PIK researchers built their analysis on 40 years of climate data from over 1,600 regions. These estimates don't include the additional costs of extreme weather events like storms and fires, which climate change is also worsening.

"High-income losses are projected for most regions, including North America and Europe, with South Asia and Africa being the hardest hit," according to Maximilian Kotz, one of the study's authors. "These losses are caused by a wide range of economically relevant effects of climate change, such as consequences for agricultural yields, labor productivity and infrastructure."

As per the World Bank, global GDP surpassed $100 trillion in 2022 and is expected to double by 2050, if not for the drag of climate change.

Some experts believe the PIK estimate is likely an understatement of the true economic impact of climate change. This aligns with the findings of the Stern Report, a 2006 analysis by economist Nicholas Stern commissioned by the UK government, which reached similar conclusions.

The Stern Review, another study published in 2006, echoes similar concerns. It projected that climate change could inflict economic damage equivalent to a 20&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;reduction in global GDP by 2050. &nbsp;

The temperature in March 2024 stood at an average of 14.14 degrees Celsius (57.9 degrees Fahrenheit) which exceeded by a tenth of a degree the previous record which was set in 2016, as per the Copernicus data.&nbsp;

Heat records have been broken every month since last June and marine heatwaves across the oceans have largely contributed to it.&nbsp;

According to the scientists, the record-breaking heat which was recorded at this time was not very surprising because of the strong El Nino, which is a climatic condition which warms the central Pacific and brings change in the global weather patterns.

Francis said that since El Nino is waning, the average global temperature should decrease now.&nbsp;

The major reason&nbsp;behind the record heat, as cited&nbsp;by climate scientists, is human-caused climate change caused by methane and carbon dioxide emissions produced by the burning of natural gas, oil and coal.

“The trajectory will not change until concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere stop rising,” said Francis, adding, “Which means we must stop burning fossil fuels, stop deforestation, and grow our food more sustainably as quickly as possible. Until then, expect more broken records."
