On Tuesday, the megacity of Shenzhen was one of the areas experiencing "heavy to very heavy downpours". Shenzhen's meteorological observatory in a warning said the risk of flash floods was "very high".

Authorities in Shenzhen sounded a red alert on Tuesday (Apr 23), cautioning people: "Please quickly take precautions and stay away from dangerous areas such as low-lying areas prone to flooding."

"Pay attention to heavy rains and resulting disasters such as water logging, flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and ground caving in," added the statement.

From Qingyuan, located near the Bei River tributary, more than 45,000 people have been evacuated, according to official media reports.

Across Guangdong, 110,000 residents have been relocated since the rains started over the weekend, reported state news agency Xinhua.

Death toll

According to an AFP report, four people have died due to the rains, while another 10 remain missing.

Recent years have seen China struggling with severe floods, record heatwaves and severe droughts. The intense weather events as per experts are driven by human-emitted greenhouse gases, of which China happens to be the biggest contributor.

Red alert sounded in China amid fears of massive 'once-a-century' floods

In 2023, Asia earned a title that is anything but an achievement: the world's most disaster-hit region by climate-related hazards.

Asia was worst-hit with floods and storms causing the highest number of casualties last year, as per a report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released on Tuesday (Apr 23).

As per the United Nations agency Asia reported 79 disasters linked to hydro-meteorological events in 2023. Of these, more than 80 per cent were related to floods and storms and collectively had a death toll of over 2,000, while another nine million people were directly affected, said the WMO.

Global Warming and Asia

According to WMO, last year global temperatures rose to record highs, and Asia was warming faster than the rest of the world.

Last year, the continent recorded temperatures nearly two degrees Celsius above the 1961 to 1990 average, reported Reuters citing the WMO. Furthermore, Asia's annual mean near-surface temperature was the second-highest on record, at 0.91 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average.

Rising temperatures, coupled with melting glaciers, threaten the region's future water security, said WMO.

In a statement, WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo said: "The report's conclusions are sobering."

"Many countries in the region experienced their hottest year on record in 2023, along with a barrage of extreme conditions, from droughts and heatwaves to floods and storms".

"Climate change exacerbated the frequency and severity of such events, profoundly impacting societies, economies, and, most importantly, human lives and the environment that we live in," added the WMO chief.

World's most disaster-hit region

"Asia remained the world's most disaster-hit region from weather, climate and water-related hazards in 2023," said WMO, as reported by AFP.

Across Asia, particularly high average temperatures were recorded. Japan had its hottest summer on record. Meanwhile, the Himalayas and the Hindu Kush mountain range in Pakistan and Afghanistan saw below-normal precipitation.

China, meanwhile, suffered through a drought as it recorded below-normal precipitation levels nearly every month.

Furthermore, over the past several decades, the High-Mountain Asia region, centred on the Tibetan Plateau, recorded glaciers retreating at an increasingly accelerating rate.

Out of the 22 monitored glaciers in the region — which boasts the largest volume of ice outside the polar regions — 20 showed continued mass ice loss last year.

"It is imperative that our actions and strategies mirror the urgency of these times," stressed Saulo. "Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to the evolving climate is not merely an option, but a fundamental necessity."

The volcanic activity was reawakened in March 2021, when an eruption near Mount Fagradalsfjall lasted six months, reports AFP.

Magma, as per the report, is making its way through the Earth's upper crust from a depth of at least 10 kilometres (6.21 miles). The inflation as per geophysicist Benedikt Ofeigsson suggests that "all the magma coming from this depth doesn't have the capacity to go straight to the surface (and) is partly stored in this magma storage in Svartsengi."

A new study warns that climate change could cut global economic output by 20 per cent by 2050. Researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) published their findings in Nature on Wednesday (April 18).

As per the PIK’s calculations, countries meet ambitious emission-cutting goals, but as many of them fall short, the actual damage could be even worse.

The study estimates climate change could cost the global economy a staggering $38 trillion every year by 2050. This is six times more expensive than the estimated cost of limiting global temperatures to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The study further states that despite damage affecting various regions to different degrees, poorer regions and those contributing least to global warming will be hit hardest.

Anders Levermann, a senior PIK scientist, says, “Countries that are least responsible for climate change are expected to suffer income loss that is 60 per cent more than the higher-income countries and 40 per cent greater than higher-emission countries.”

The industrial economies of Germany and the United States would shrink by roughly 11 per cent by mid-century (13 per cent for France), even if climate action is properly taken, according to the researchers.

PIK researchers built their analysis on 40 years of climate data from over 1,600 regions. These estimates don't include the additional costs of extreme weather events like storms and fires, which climate change is also worsening.

"High-income losses are projected for most regions, including North America and Europe, with South Asia and Africa being the hardest hit," according to Maximilian Kotz, one of the study's authors. "These losses are caused by a wide range of economically relevant effects of climate change, such as consequences for agricultural yields, labor productivity and infrastructure."

As per the World Bank, global GDP surpassed $100 trillion in 2022 and is expected to double by 2050, if not for the drag of climate change.

Some experts believe the PIK estimate is likely an understatement of the true economic impact of climate change. This aligns with the findings of the Stern Report, a 2006 analysis by economist Nicholas Stern commissioned by the UK government, which reached similar conclusions.

The Stern Review, another study published in 2006, echoes similar concerns. It projected that climate change could inflict economic damage equivalent to a 20 per cent reduction in global GDP by 2050.

Climate change could lead to losses worth $38 trillion every year by 2050, study warns

Time is running out for Humanity to save the Earth. The next two years are crucial to tackle the challenge of the climate crisis. These are the words of United Nations Climate Chief Simon Stiell he says urgent steps are needed to deal with the rising temperature and boosting climate Finance must be at the heart of the solution.

Climate crisis: Humanity has 2 years to 'save the world'

Time is running out to tackle climate crisis

Amid the looming climate crisis and people battling unpredictable weather, the month of March has emerged as the 10th consecutive hottest month.

The month has set a new monthly record for global heat on Earth as temperatures in both the world's air and oceans reached an all-time high, said the European Union climate agency Copernicus.

The temperature in March 2024 stood at an average of 14.14 degrees Celsius (57.9 degrees Fahrenheit) which exceeded by a tenth of a degree the previous record which was set in 2016, as per the Copernicus data.

Heat records have been broken every month since last June and marine heatwaves across the oceans have largely contributed to it.

According to the scientists, the record-breaking heat which was recorded at this time was not very surprising because of the strong El Nino, which is a climatic condition which warms the central Pacific and brings change in the global weather patterns.

Speaking to news agency Associated Press, Woodwell Climate Research Center scientist Jennifer Francis said, “But its combination with the non-natural marine heat waves made these records so breathtaking."

Francis said that since El Nino is waning, the average global temperature should decrease now.

The major reason behind the record heat, as cited by climate scientists, is human-caused climate change caused by methane and carbon dioxide emissions produced by the burning of natural gas, oil and coal.

“The trajectory will not change until concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere stop rising,” said Francis, adding, “Which means we must stop burning fossil fuels, stop deforestation, and grow our food more sustainably as quickly as possible. Until then, expect more broken records."

A leading scientist, while speaking to the BBC, said that climate change could move "into uncharted territory" if temperatures do not decrease by the end of the year.

Southern Africa hit by climate change, Zimbabwe declares drought a natural disaster?

Scientists have conducted the inaugural outdoor trial of a technology designed to manipulate clouds and reflect sunlight back into space in order to potentially mitigate the Earth's increasing temperatures.

The trial, held aboard a retired aircraft carrier in San Francisco Bay is a milestone in the pursuit of solutions to combat climate change. The device, resembling a snow machine, emitted a fine mist of salt aerosol particles into the atmosphere. This was done to assess its effectiveness in altering cloud properties.

The team's ultimate goal is to influence cloud composition above oceans so that it can offer an approach to solar radiation modification.

Marine cloud brightening method is controversial but it has gained traction among researchers, including private investors and government entities.

This geoengineering technique involves spraying tiny particles, such as sea salt or other aerosols, into the lower atmosphere over the ocean. These particles act as cloud condensation nuclei, promoting the formation of more numerous but smaller water droplets within existing clouds.

As a result, the clouds become brighter and more reflective, effectively increasing their albedo - their ability to reflect sunlight back into space.

Concerns surrounding the method

Many argue that further research and careful consideration are needed before marine cloud brightening or any other geoengineering approach is implemented on a large scale.

This is because of the skepticism and concerns persist regarding the unforeseen consequences of such interventions.

Critics are reportedly warning against potential disruptions to natural climate patterns. The experts are also highlighting the need to swiftly transition away from fossil fuels.

An economist from the online real estate firm warns that such hazards can negatively impact home prices, lead to increased insurance expenses, and potentially destabilise the broader housing sector.

Even properties not directly affected by climate risks face challenges, including higher insurance premiums, which jeopardize potential sales and make homeownership more costly.

These findings align with a growing body of research and anecdotal evidence highlighting the magnitude of the issue for homeowners. According to First Street Foundation, a nonprofit specialising in climate risk analysis, nearly 36 million homes—comprising a quarter of all US real estate—are grappling with rising insurance costs and limited coverage options due to escalating climate threats.

Contrary to assumptions, climate risks extend beyond coastal and mountainous regions. First Street's research shows that residents in inland states like Kentucky, South Dakota, and West Virginia are also experiencing notable increases in insurance premiums due to heightened damage from extreme weather events.

The depths of Antarctica, earth's frozen south are raising fresh alarms. In a warming climate, meltwater from Antarctica is expected to contribute significantly to rising seas. For third year in a row ice is depleting at a massive rate. Sea ice coverage around the continent has dropped below 2 million square kilometers. Now this threshold has not been breached since satellite measurement started in the year 1979. Watch to know more!

What is the optimal temperature for life? A systematic review of published research has now identified that 20°C is the comfortable temperature that allows life to thrive on Earth. Here's why.

Why 20°C?

As per a team of specialists from institutes around the globe — Norway, Tasmania, Canada, Scotland, Germany, Hong Kong and Taiwan — 20°C is comfortable for humans and other species. Anything warmer than that affects productivity and efficiency, because releasing heat requires energy.

This is also true for various animals, plants, and microbes living in air and water.

It was earlier assumed that the number of marine species peaks at the warm waters of the equator. However, a research group from New Zealand recently observed that this was not true. Rather, the number of species dipped, and this dip as per an article in The Conversation, "has been getting deeper since the last ice age about 20,000 years ago."

This is because of global ocean warming.

Not only this, researchers found that even though many species have evolved to live at temperatures lower or higher than 20°C, fossil records also show that extinctions were lower at around this temperature.

Climate change

With climate change driving global warming, researchers said, "Our findings suggest that the pace of climate change is too fast for new species to evolve to replace those lost within the lowest latitudes."

This data is based on the systematic review of a total of 54 papers published in peer-reviewed journals.

As per the researchers, temperatures higher than 20°C deplete genetic diversity; marine and freshwater species' tolerance of low oxygen; marine pelagic (open water living) and benthic (seabed living) algal productivity and fish predation rates on bait; and global species richness in pelagic fishes, plankton, benthic invertebrates and fossil molluscs.

Here, thermal breadth refers to the temperature range at which survival was equal to or above 50 per cent of its peak.

Scientists argue that while many marine species still may be able to adapt to global warming by simply shifting their geographic distribution, land species could suffer. This is because a shift in their geographical distributions won't be easy "due to landscapes modified by cities, farming and other human infrastructures."

The mean ice coverage across the United States's five Great Lakes in January 2024 was only 6 per cent, reveals a new report. This makes last month one of the least icy Januarys in the past 50 years, as per the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

As per Professor Sapna Sharma, a specialist in lake environmental stressors at York University in Toronto, "The Great Lakes are now experiencing much lower ice cover, but in many regions, no ice at all. Large and deep lakes, including bays in Lakes Michigan and Superior, are most likely to permanently lose ice cover as soon as the 2060s if greenhouse gas emissions are not mitigated."

Climate change threatens Great Lakes' ice cover, scientists predict permanent loss by 2060s

Thanks to humans, more than one fifth of the "magnificent" migratory species on Earth are facing an extinction threat. As per a landmark, United Nations report released on Monday (Feb 12), migratory species across the globe are under threat.

A wake up call

The first-ever State of the World's Migratory Species assessment by the UN Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), found that one in five species is threatened with extinction.

The report focused on the 1,189 species covered by a 1979 UN convention to protect migratory animals. It found that about 44 per cent of them are also witnessing their populations decline. Additionally, about 22 per cent could vanish altogether.

As per the report findings, 70 CMS-listed species have become more endangered. This includes the steppe eagle, Egyptian vulture, and the wild camel.

In a conversation with AFP, CMS chief Amy Fraenkel said that they "are finding out the phenomenon of migration itself is under threat."

The report should be a "wake up call about what's happening," she added.

These numbers are based on assessments and data provided by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as well as the Living Planet Index.

Who's behind this?

As per the report, humans are to blame. Our species activities like destruction or breaking of habitats, hunting, fishing, plastic pollution, overuse of chemicals and light, noise pollution pose the biggest threat — impacting 70 per cent of the species on the UN list. Up to 75 per cent of the species are affected by habitat loss.

Furthermore, climate change also messes up migration routes and timings by altering seasonal conditions.

The report has been released ahead of a conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from February 12 to 17 for the Fourteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (COP14). There, 130 signatory countries — with the notable absence of the United States, China, Canada, and Russia will meet for their once every three years meet to review new species to add to its watchlist. Among the animals being considered at this week's meeting will be the giant Amazon catfish.

This includes the steppe eagle, Egyptian vulture, and the wild camel. In a conversation with AFP, CMS chief Amy Fraenkel said that they "are finding out the phenomenon of migration itself is under threat." The report should be a "wake up call about what's happening," she added. (With inputs from agencies)

Effects of climate change are becoming visible with each passing day. Earth is showing signs of Decay, oceans are undergoing significant changes, temperatures are rising and circulation is getting disrupted. A study has revealed that Atlantic Ocean circulation could reach a point of collapse. Watch to know more!

Climate Change disrupts ocean circulation, breakdown could disrupt global ecosystem

The seas are the most obvious sign of global warming because they absorb 90% of the heat that is trapped by carbon emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels. Scientists said that in 2023, the oceans absorbed record amounts of heat, and the data indicated that over the previous ten years, the oceans had warmed significantly annually.

January is more than just the month for New Year resolutions and fresh starts. It also marks a growing movement - Veganuary - that is slowly but steadily gaining momentum.

What is Veganuary?

Veganuary is a global campaign that encourages individuals to embrace a plant-based lifestyle, if not forever, at least for the month of January.

The word veganuary is born from the fusion of "vegan" and "January," and contrary to what many of us may think, it is not just a dietary trend; it's a conscientious awakening.

As Shreya Swaminath, Director of Farm Animal Protection at Humane Society International/India puts it, "There is an urgent need to transform our food systems, which are using progressively more inhumane and carbon-intensive methods of raising animals to meet consumer demand."

In an exclusive conversation with WION, Swaminath emphasised that swapping animal proteins with plant-based foods even just once a week can make a tremendous change.

"The simple act of swapping animal proteins with plant-based foods even once a week can significantly reduce animal suffering and greenhouse gas emissions. The power to create change is in each of our hands - rather on each of our plates!," she said.

Meat and environment

Over the years, multiple studies and research have proved that eating meat is bad for the environment. In July, a study published in the journal Food showed that a vegan diet can help cut down climate-heating emissions, water pollution and land use by 75 per cent. This is compared to diets that have more than 100 grams of meat a day.

Shikha Jain, Manager of Public Outreach at Humane Society International/India, adds a broader perspective to the vegan movement. She challenges the notion of veganism as merely a dietary choice, asserting, "It's time to change our perception towards veganism as just another dietary practice. It is, in fact, a wholesome lifestyle that can impact a wider circle than merely our health."

Jain highlights the far-reaching consequences of animal farming, affecting not only public health but also the environment, animal welfare, food security, and the spread of infectious diseases.

From resolutions to climate revolution: Is 'Veganuary' more than just another fad?

The world is facing alarming climate challenges. In California, massive waves signal oceanic disturbances, while in India, Delhi NCR's vanishing winters hint at global warming's impact. New Zealand's battle with a rat infestation, spurred by extreme weather, highlights biodiversity threats. These diverse yet interconnected incidents highlight the urgent need for global action to restore our environmental balance.

The phenomena of climate change and global warming took centre stage in South Asia too in 2023, perhaps like never before. Torrential unseasonal rains, floods, weather extremes, melting Himalayan ice, and more put the focus on the region being a major victim of climate change as well as the need for joint efforts from countries in South Asia to take on the problem.

The Alps make up the most popular ski destination in the world. but the industry now faces an existential threat as it battles the looming danger of climate change. The region's warmest autumn on record forced many ski resorts in the Alps to delay their opening times this year.

Apes have the astonishing ability to recognise long-lost companions, found new research. If you're wondering why this is astonishing, it's because this challenges the conventional understanding of social memory in non-human animals. This actually happens to be the longest-lasting social memory to be documented outside the human species.

The research

Research published on Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that chimpanzees and bonobos could recall and respond positively to images of former group mates over 25 years after their last encounter.

The research was conducted by Christopher Krupenye, an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University, and lead author Laura Lewis from the University of California, Berkeley.

In conversation with CNN, Krupenye revealed that the inspiration for the study arose from his personal experiences with apes. He said he could sense that the apes recognised him even years after their last interaction.

To test this, the researchers used high-quality photographs of deceased or departed apes from various zoos, presenting them alongside images of strangers to participating apes at Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland, Planckendael Zoo in Belgium and Kumamoto Sanctuary in Japan.

Photos of apes ranged from nine months to 26 years. They then used noninvasive eye-tracking technology to measure the apes' gaze duration on each photo.

Beyond the study's scientific implications, the authors said that they hope it will help spread awareness of the impact of poaching and deforestation on ape communities, emphasising the importance of conservation efforts.

"We hope that these results will provide people more empathy with our closest living cousins," said Lewis.

Humans and apes aren't that different after all

The results were striking, demonstrating that the apes looked "significantly longer" at familiar faces, regardless of the time that had elapsed since their last meeting. The gaze was even more extended for those with whom they had shared a friendly relationship.

As per Krupenye, this phenomenon parallels human experiences, akin to unexpectedly encountering a long-lost high school friend.

"It's a very familiar experience for humans too," he said.

Notably, one bonobo named Louise exhibited a "robust bias" towards her sister Loretta and nephew Erin, whom she hadn't seen in 26 years.

As per a news release, she "showed a strikingly robust looking bias toward both of them over eight trials."

The researchers speculate that apes' social memory might surpass 26 years, possibly rivalling the human capacity to remember individuals for up to 48 years. The release also points out that humans start forgetting people after 15 years.

As per CNN, the study sets a new benchmark for the longest social memory documented in non-human animals. Previously, dolphins were known for remembering individuals after 20 years. This challenges the notion that social memory is a uniquely human trait and emphasises that it may be a characteristic we share with our closest relatives: apes.

Spewing lava and smoke in an awe-inspiring yet frightening display, a volcano in Southwest Iceland erupted late on Monday after weeks of intense earthquake activity, Iceland's Meteorological Office said.

The eruption comes as, for weeks, the Nordic country remained on high alert awaiting a potential eruption in the Reykjanes peninsula. Last month, the threat even prompted evacuation orders.

The eruption

The volcanic eruption happened around 10:17 pm local time. Over an hour before that, a string of earthquakes also shook the area, officials said.

"At 22:17 this evening, a volcanic eruption began north of Grindavík on the Reykjanes peninsula," said the IMO.

On its website, it posted "Warning: Eruption has started north of Grindavík by Hagafell."

"Seismic activity together with measurements from GPS devices indicate that the magma is moving to the southwest and the eruption may continue in the direction of Grindavík," said the Met Office.

Livestreams and images of the eruption show molten rock spewing from fissures in the ground, with the bright yellow-orange lava appearing brighter in contrast with the dark night sky.

As per a Reuters report citing the Met Office, cracks in the earth's surface were around 3.5 km long and had grown rapidly. Every second, these fissures became the gateway for some 100 to 200 cubic metres (3,530 to 7,060 cubic feet) of lava. This, as per the Met Office, is several times more than in previous eruptions in the area.

The unpredictability

Local police have raised their alert level, the public has been warned to avoid approaching the area while emergency personnel assess the situation.

Previously, on 11 November, roughly 4,000 residents of Grindavík, a fishing port around 40 kilometres (24.85 miles) from the capital, were evacuated overnight amid fears of an eruption.

Since then, three eruptions have struck the area, which volcanologists fear may be the start of a new era of activity in the region.

In the aftermath of former Tropical Cyclone Jasper, heavy rain has triggered floods, cutting off tourist-popular towns in Australia's northeast along the Great Barrier Reef.

The region has witnessed severe flooding, forcing evacuations and leaving residents stranded on rooftops due to rapidly rising rivers. On Monday, a crocodile, as per reports, was captured out of a storm drain, before being spotted in the middle of Queensland's residential area.

Worst natural disaster

Talking to ABC Television, Queensland state Premier Steven Miles expressed concern, stating, "We see a lot of natural disasters, and this is just about the worst I can remember."

"The problem is the rain won't stop and until it eases up, we can't get aerial support into remote places," he said.

Cairns, a key town serving as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and home to over 150,000 people, received approximately 600 mm (around 24 inches) of rain in just 40 hours through Monday, surpassing the December mean of 182 mm (7.17 inches) by more than triple.

The Cairns airport faced disruptions, with all flights cancelled or postponed, and images on social media showed planes partially submerged on the tarmac. Despite efforts to drain water, the airport struggled to cope with the volume.

Breaking records

Major flood warnings have been issued, with rivers expected to break records dating back to 1977.

The region is expected to face more rain as Jasper persists through Monday, with forecasts suggesting up to 300 mm (12 inches) of rain within six hours in some areas.

The impact of the floods has extended to power outages, affecting over 14,000 properties across the region.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that defence forces are on standby to initiate rescue and relief efforts. This extreme weather event comes as Australia grapples with an El Niño weather phenomenon, contributing to diverse weather extremes, from floods in the northeast to bushfire alerts in the southeast, where temperatures in some Sydney suburbs are anticipated to surpass 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
