Not too different from the Republicans, they supported brutal dictators across Latin America, Asia and West Asia, and 'colour-coded revolutions' in the periphery of the erstwhile Soviet Union in an attempt to surround Russia with pro-West governments.

As the world grapples with a multitude of crises, the World Bank has issued a stark warning regarding the state of global poverty. In a recent report, the institution highlighted how ongoing wars, escalating debt levels, the climate crisis, and the lingering effects of the Covid-19 pandemic have collectively undermined efforts to alleviate poverty worldwide according to detailed report by The Guardian. <o:p></o:p>

The report underscores that these compounding challenges have resulted in a staggering increase in poverty rates. According to the World Bank’s findings, nearly 700 million people are now living on less than $2.15 per day, a figure that has surged by 10 per cent since 2019. This alarming trend not only threatens the livelihoods of millions but also jeopardises the progress made in previous decades to combat poverty.<o:p></o:p>

Impact of conflict and debt on poverty<o:p></o:p>

The report elaborates on how conflicts in various regions have worsened poverty levels. Countries involved&nbsp;in wars experience significant disruptions to their economies and social structures. The World Bank noted that conflict-related displacement has reached unprecedented levels, with over 100 million people forced to flee their homes due to violence.<o:p></o:p>

Moreover, rising debt burdens have left many nations struggling to fund essential services. The institution revealed that around 60 per cent of low-income countries are currently at risk of or already experiencing debt distress. This financial strain limits governments' ability to invest in critical areas such as healthcare and education, further entrenching poverty.<o:p></o:p>

Climate change: A growing threat<o:p></o:p>

In addition to conflict and debt, climate change poses an existential threat to global poverty reduction efforts. The World Bank's report highlights that extreme weather events have become increasingly frequent and severe, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations. Floods, droughts, and heatwaves not only destroy livelihoods but also disrupt food security.<o:p></o:p>

The report warns that without immediate action to address climate change, an estimated 130 million people could be pushed into extreme poverty by 2030. This grim projection serves as a clarion call for governments and organisations worldwide to prioritise sustainable development practices and invest in climate resilience.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>The role of Covid-19<o:p></o:p>

The Covid-19 pandemic has further complicated these challenges. The World Bank stated that while many countries are recovering from the immediate health crisis, the economic repercussions continue to reverberate through societies. Job losses and reduced incomes have left countless families struggling to make ends meet.<o:p></o:p>

In light of these multifaceted crises, the World Bank is urging governments to adopt comprehensive strategies aimed at combating poverty. This includes increasing investments in social protection systems, enhancing access to education and healthcare, and promoting economic diversification.<o:p></o:p>

Wars, debt, and climate crisis stall global anti-poverty efforts, warns World Bank

A preliminary investigation by an international team of researchers revealed that the amount of carbon absorbed by land drastically decreased in 2023, the hottest year on record, according to a report in The Guardian.

A preliminary investigation by an international team of researchers revealed that the amount of carbon absorbed by land drastically decreased in 2023, the hottest year on record, according to a report in The Guardian. This resulted in forests, plants, and soil absorbing minimal carbon during that period. Melting ice disrupting ocean carbon absorption Another study cited by The Guardian highlighted that the glaciers in Greenland and the Arctic ice sheets are melting more rapidly than expected. This is affecting the Gulf Stream ocean current, which is also slowing the rate at which oceans are able to absorb carbon. Long-term effects on carbon storage in oceans The drop in carbon absorption may not be a short-term issue. Melting sea ice is exposing algae-eating zooplankton to increased sunlight, causing them to remain deeper underwater for longer periods. This interrupts their vertical migration, a process that helps store carbon on the ocean floor, which could have long-term consequences. Johan Rockström, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, spoke at the New York Climate Week event in September, warning, “We’re seeing cracks in the resilience of the Earth’s systems. We’re seeing massive cracks on land – terrestrial ecosystems are losing their carbon store and carbon uptake capacity, but the oceans are also showing signs of instability.” Also read: Watch: Three-armed robot conducts orchestra with 'lightsaber' baton - Is this the future of music? While the 2023 collapse of land's carbon absorption may be temporary, depending on the presence of drought or wildfires, it highlights the vulnerability of these ecosystems, with serious consequences for the climate. Lack of large-scale carbon removal technology In the absence of large-scale technology capable of removing atmospheric carbon, Earth's forests, grasslands, peatlands, and oceans remain the primary natural systems absorbing carbon emissions, which reached a record 37.4 billion tonnes in 2023. Climate models may underestimate global warming Most climate models have not accounted for such a swift decline in land carbon sinks, as witnessed in 2023. If this trend continues, it could lead to faster global warming than these models have projected. Regional variation in forest carbon absorption A study published in July revealed that while forests consistently absorbed carbon between 1990 and 2019, the amount absorbed varied greatly depending on the region. Boreal forests, which hold about one-third of the world’s land-based carbon and span Russia, Scandinavia, Canada, and Alaska, have experienced a sharp reduction in carbon absorption—over a third of it lost due to beetle infestations, fires, and logging, all driven by the climate crisis. Global heating driven by collapsing land sinks Combined with the weakening resilience of the Amazon rainforest and drought conditions across tropical regions, the extreme heat in northern forests contributed to the collapse of land carbon sinks in 2023, leading to a sharp rise in atmospheric carbon levels. Typhoon Yagi death toll rises to 74 in Myanmar; 89 missing as floods and landslides wreak havoc

In the Brazilian capital, a massive wildfire has destroyed about 20 per cent of a forest, cloaking the city in a cloud of grey-white smoke. The blaze, as per officials, was believed to have been started by arsonists.

<h2>Conservation area</h2>

As per Reuters, the National Forest of Brasília is a conservation area that stretches to over 5,600 hectares of woodland home to springs that are the source of over 70 per cent of the city's freshwater.

"We have put out three of the four blazes, and we hope to have the fire under control by the end of the day," said Fabio dos Santos Miranda.

Miranda, who manages the forest in an interview, added that they were "sure this was an environmental crime, but we haven't confirmed if it was intentional or not."&nbsp;

He added that three suspected arsonists were seen in the area where the fire started.

<h2>Nearby orchards under threat</h2>

Orchards adjoining the area are under threat from the blaze and firefighters are struggling to contain it and stop it from spreading to orchards where farmers grow tomatoes and flowers.

"We are working to protect the orchards," said fireman Major Godoy. However, he said that "the wind is blowing the fire towards them and the sparks fly a long way."

<h2>Brazil, wildfires and August</h2>

According to the data from Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), satellites in August detected over 38,000 fires — 38,266 to be exact. This is more than double compared to the fires in the Amazon rainforest in 2023, and the highest — by about 38 per cent, for this month in over a decade — since 2010.

This 14-year high, as per a Reuters report, comes after fire hotspots in August surged to a two-decade high and as Brazil battles the second straight year of extreme drought.

As per the report in the naturally wet, moist biome, fires usually start due to cattle ranching as people convert the jungle into pastures. Dry conditions and warm air aid the spread of these fires, which burn more intensely and for longer.

In August, thousands of fires were driven by a combination of weather, climate change and human action, said Helga Correa, a conservation specialist at WWF-Brasil, in an initial assessment.

"The region where we detected concentrated smoke in August coincides with the so-called Arch of Deforestation, which includes the north of Rondonia, the south of Amazonas and the southwest of Para," said Correa.

"This indicates that, in addition to climate change and El Niño, changes in land use produced by humans play a central role in the increase in fires," she added.

In the Amazon rainforest, the month of August saw the number of fires surge to the highest levels since 2010, government data released on Sunday (Sep 1) showed. The increase follows a record drought that has been plaguing the biome.

The increase follows a record drought that has been plaguing the biome. How many fires are we talking about? According to the data from Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), satellites in August detected over 38,000 fires — 38,266 to be exact. This is more than double compared to the fires in the Amazon rainforest in 2023, and the highest — by about 38 per cent, for this month in over a decade — since 2010. Fires in Brazil's Amazon rainforest 'blaze' to a 14-year-high amidst severe drought

Wildfires in Canada last year released more greenhouse gases than some of the largest pollution emitting countries, revealed a report on Wednesday (August 28). Shockingly, the wildfires released 647 megatonnes of carbon, which is seven to ten times that of the largest national emitters for the year 2022.

This revelation has called into question the national emission budgets that rely on forests to be carbon stores.&nbsp;

<h2 bis_size="{&quot;x&quot;:7,&quot;y&quot;:118,&quot;w&quot;:926,&quot;h&quot;:25,&quot;abs_x&quot;:40,&quot;abs_y&quot;:1861}">What research shows</h2>

The study published in the journal Nature revealed that at nearly&nbsp;650 megatonnes of carbon,&nbsp; these emissions were more than that of Japan, Germany, and Russia in 2022.

Only India, China, and the United States emitted more carbon than that from the wildfires. This means that if Canada's wildfires were to be ranked as global carbon emitters, it&nbsp;would be the world's fourth-largest emitter.

Here's why</a>

While typical emissions from Canadian wildfires over the last ten years have been in the range of 29 to 121 megatonnes, this massive jump in emissions is caused by climate change.

Driven by fossil fuel burning, climate change has led to drier and hotter conditions and in turn extreme wildfires.

In 2023, wildfires laid claim to around four per cent of Canada's forests, burning 15 million hectares (37 million acres).

This finding has become a cause of major concern. Forests are typically viewed as a long-term carbon sink that helps with industrial emissions. However, as it turns out, the emissions from forest wildfires might actually be aggravating the problem that is climate change.

"If our goal is really to limit the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, we need to make adaptations into how much carbon we are allowed to emit through our economy, corresponding to how much carbon is being absorbed or not absorbed by forests," stated Brendan Byrne, an atmospheric scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the author of this study.

In an era marked by environmental challenges, the concept of eco-anxiety has emerged as an overwhelming toll on our hearts and minds.

<h2>Eco-Anxiety: The silent struggle</h2>

As people around the world grapple with environmental issues causing climate crisis, ranging from pollution, deforestation, forest fires and heat waves, there has emerged a profound sense of worry and helplessness.&nbsp;

This in many cases leads to a new form of psychological distress, for which experts have coined the term: "Eco-Anxiety".

The American Psychological Association (APA) recognises it as a "chronic fear of environmental doom".&nbsp;

The term encapsulates the psychological impact of ecological concerns faced by individuals as they witness the degradation of our environment and see its visible effects like smog-blanketed skies — daily reminders of the challenges our planet and we face.

<h2>Pollution and mental health</h2>

Recently, the Indian capital New Delhi has been living under a blanket of toxic air, which has made it hard for people to breathe.&nbsp;

There were days when the AQI (Air Quality Index) levels plummeted to a hazardous level of up to 999 in some areas. Naturally, this gave rise to a number of health problems. While many landed in hospitals, others battled a silent enemy.

Recent research has also shed light on the connection between pollution and mental health. Studies indicate that exposure to air pollution can contribute to an increased risk of mental health issues.

Talking to WION, Shannon Olsson, a chemical ecologist with over 20 years of experience said that for Delhi, the well-known pollution causes like vehicular emissions, stubble burning etc "come together in (a) perfect storm to create these incredibly high pollution levels which are really a little hard to comprehend even when you're in Delhi".

<h2>A sense of helplessness&nbsp;</h2>

Olsson, who is the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (ATV) Special Scientific Envoy to India, said that natural disasters, coupled with wars and the many crises lead to a "helplessness that you feel as an individual".

"You feel like, what can I possibly do to try to control this? It feels like you have very little control and that produces obviously a fear because also these things are dangerous."

Olsson, the Founder and Global Director at the echo network says that eco-anxiety can manifest helplessness similar to what one feels when "they've lost a loved one or lost a job," which then "causes huge anxiety" especially among "children and our youth who are growing up in these environments where they feel very, very insecure about their own futures."

This sense of helplessness is also felt by parents.

Talking to WION, Neha Sonawane, a lawyer and a new mother, summed up the eco-anxiety felt by parents in one line: "As I started on this journey of parenthood, it is mostly this feeling of overwhelming sense of responsibility for the world".

"I don't know how much my small footprint matters in this larger carbon footprint, but I can try and I can hope that I teach my child a kind, more sustainable method of living," she added.

<h2>How to deal with eco-anxiety?</h2>

Like any other mental health concern, seeking professional help is a must. Along with that, it takes effort.

"Anything like air pollution, it can't be dealt with by one person, it requires a concerted effort and I think this is one of the major limiting factors," says Olsson.

Living sustainably is another way.

"There are lots of ways that we can reduce our impact on the environment by reusing items by reducing our usage of things like plastic by trying to walk as much as possible by trying to reduce or trying to take public transport as it's available to us."

"There's many things that we can do and there's lots of alternatives coming out all the time so just keeping our minds open to what is available to us. And there's lots of cool startups in India right now that are doing really great things, really wonderful, sustainable things that helps me a lot because it helps me to know that there are really wonderful people doing great things and that reduces my anxiety by just seeing that light in other people," she adds.

However, as per Olsson, all is not bad.

"As a scientist I can tell you if you look at the statistics, the world is actually getting better. Overall, people are living better, things are getting better. The world is actually not as bad as it seems. We just have to keep that hope and keep trying."&nbsp;

"So the important thing I say is, do not give up, do not just sit down and say there's nothing, the world is ending. Because it's not."

The searing heat wave in west US has claimed the lives of a father and daughter, who had gone missing while hiking in a national park in Utah.

<h2>What happened to the father and daughter in Utah?</h2>

Albino Herrera Espinoza, 52, and Beatriz Herrera, 23, from Wisconsin, died after sending desperate text messages. In their message to 911, they said they had been lost in the park and had run out of water. A search was launched for them on&nbsp;July 12 in the area, which had been experiencing temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

They had been hiking in the park's Island in the Sky mesa, a dangerous area notorious for heat-related deaths. The Syncline Loop Trail there is described by the National Park Service (NPS) as "the most challenging trail in the Island in the Sky district."

Days are becoming longer because of the climate crisis, a new analysis has suggested. This has happened due to the mass melting of polar ice, which is reshaping the planet. Scientists have said that the phenomenon is a striking demonstration of how humanity's actions are transforming the Earth and even affecting its rotation speed and axis.&nbsp;

The Moon's gravitational pull and internal processes in the core and mantle were the main forces governing these motions. However, the melting of ice sheets is currently interfering with these natural processes.&nbsp;

The latest paper, published on Monday (Jul 15) in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), shows that water flowing from Greenland and Antarctica is resulting in more mass around the equator.&nbsp;

According to the study, which was also published in Nature Geoscience on July 12, the underlying mechanics of the planet and climate change are causing Earth's spin axis to "shift".&nbsp;

The movement of the Earth's rotating axis with respect to the crust is known as polar motion. In the latest study, researchers at ETH Zurich have improved their basic understanding of the same by using state-of-the-art AI models.&nbsp;

Days are becoming longer because of the climate crisis, a new analysis has suggested. This has happened due to the mass melting of polar ice, which is reshaping the planet. Scientists have said that the phenomenon is a striking demonstration of how humanity's actions are transforming the Earth and even affecting its rotation speed and axis. The Moon's gravitational pull and internal processes in the core and mantle were the main forces governing these motions. However, the melting of ice sheets is currently interfering with these natural processes. The latest paper, published on Monday (Jul 15) in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), shows that water flowing from Greenland and Antarctica is resulting in more mass around the equator. Also read: NASA warns against 180-ft asteroid hurtling towards Earth at scary speed According to the study, which was also published in Nature Geoscience on July 12, the underlying mechanics of the planet and climate change are causing Earth's spin axis to "shift". The movement of the Earth's rotating axis with respect to the crust is known as polar motion. In the latest study, researchers at ETH Zurich have improved their basic understanding of the same by using state-of-the-art AI models. They found that if greenhouse gas emissions keep rising, they will eventually become more powerful than the Moon's tidal force. The Moon has been regulating the constant lengthening of days for billions of years. "We humans have a greater impact on our planet than we realize. Days are becoming longer as climate change is altering Earth's axis of rotation

Studies on how&nbsp;climate change affects mating patterns of animals have been coming out in the recent past. Now, a new analysis has posited that certain insects may be facing difficulty in finding mates because sexual behaviour is connected to their body colour, which in turn is often affected by atmospheric temperatures.

One insect in question is the ambush bug. Darker male ambush bugs warm up more easily on cold mornings. That will help them get sexual partners faster than their brighter counterparts.

A review article published in the journal Ecology and Evolution pointed out how sexual selection is affected by colour patterns in male ambush bug.

As per the study, the male insect changes colour to dark based on heat in the atmosphere. It is a crucial aspect for mating, as darker males attract more females.

<h2>What has global warming got to do with any of this?&nbsp;</h2>

The multitude of colours we see on insects is partly a result of pigmentation, which is aided by temperature.

The colouring of their bodies help insects in several ways, from camouflage to attracting mating partners.

<h2>Insect colours and sexual signalling</h2>

Colours on insects is a method of communication too. Besides sexual signalling, the colours also act as protection from predators.

<h2>How are insect colours linked to climate crisis?</h2>

The expression of insect colours in terms of quantity and quality can be impacted by environmental factors including temperature, rainfall, and solar radiation, noted the study. Temperature directly affects pigment production.
Insects in colder environments tend to be darker, as melanin production is greater.

"The selective advantage of this response to environmental temperature is that darker bodies can absorb more solar radiation than lighter bodies, allowing darker individuals to remain active for longer periods in colder regions, which may increase reproductive success and feeding rates," said the study, citing earlier research.&nbsp;

Climate crisis may be costing some insects their sex lives, suggests study. Here is how

Beryl on Monday (Jul&nbsp;8) brought to Texas howling winds and torrential rains that killed at least three people and left 2.7 million houses without power. Along with this, the tropical storm caused extensive flooding on highways, delayed more than 1,300 flights and caused the closure of schools and major oil ports.

The season's earliest category 5 hurricane on record, Beryl, has weakened to a tropical storm after hitting the coastal Texas town of Matagorda with all the might of a Category 1 hurricane.

<h2>What is a Category 1 hurricane?</h2>

A hurricane, as per the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, is considered a Category 1 if it sustains winds between 74 (119 km/h)&nbsp;and 95 miles per hour (152.89 km/h).&nbsp;

While Category 1 hurricanes are not considered "major hurricanes" until they reach Category 3, they are still very dangerous and can bring with them widespread destruction.

<h2>Beryl's devastation</h2>

In Texas, Beryl claimed the lives of three. As per the news agency Reuters, a 53-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman were killed in two separate incidents in the Houston area when trees fell on their homes.

A third individual, a City of Houston employee, drowned in an underpass while travelling to work.

Previously, in Mexico and the Caribbean, the storm killed 11 people, Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick told reporters.

"For those of you in northeast Texas, be aware. You will have tropical storm winds, maybe as late as midnight or 1 am. You will have flooding, you will have rain, and you need to stay off the roads," he warned.

While state officials are yet to assess the damage wrought by storm Beryl, Mayor John Whitmire told reporters that due to the hurricane, floodwaters across most of Houston have exceeded 10 inches (25.4 centimetres).&nbsp;

"We're literally getting calls across Houston right now asking for first responders to come rescue individuals in desperate life safety conditions," he said.

Furthermore, more than 1,300 flights were cancelled, as officials ordered evacuations in some beach towns.&nbsp;

September 11, 2001, was one of the darkest days in the history of the United States of America when unprecedented terrorist attacks shocked the nation, killing nearly 3,000 people. But it's not incorrect to say that a foreteller had already predicted the deadly attacks.&nbsp;

Baba Vanga, whose actual name was Vangelia Pandeva Gushterova, predicted the attack on the Twin Towers in New York. As quoted by Marca, her prediction reportedly said, "Two metal birds will crash into our American brothers, wolves will howl from the bushes and the blood of the innocent will flow in the rivers."&nbsp;

Baba Vanga died in 1996 at the age of 85. From wars to the end of the world, she made several striking predictions. People often argue that her predictions can't be taken seriously, however, there isn't any harm in discussing them as they include our future. She&nbsp;lost her sight at the age of 12 but is said to have gained the ability to tell the future.&nbsp;

She has predicted that the world will end in the year 5079 in the aftermath of a cosmic event of "unimaginable" proportions.&nbsp;

She also predicted that there will be a major conflict in Europe in the year 2025. The conflict apparently will cause a great reduction in the population on the continent.&nbsp;

Her prediction includes a climate crisis, which is quite evident. She said the melting of the ice at the poles in 2033 would significantly increase the sea level. She also said that a global drought will happen in 2170.&nbsp;

After battering Jamaica's southern coast with devastating winds and sea surges, the deadly Hurricane Beryl is powering towards Mexico late on Wednesday (Jul&nbsp;3).

Killing at least seven people, the Category 4 has left in its wake a path of destruction across the Caribbean. A Reuters report suggests that the number of dead may be 10 already, with more to be reported as communications come back online.

<h2>Where will Hurricane Beryl hit next?</h2>

As per the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Beryl was pulling away from Jamaica late on Wednesday and was expected to pass just south of the Cayman Islands overnight. From there, it is expected to move to Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula.

Mexico, as per AFP, is scrambling to brace for the deadly storm. Hurricane Beryl is expected to bring with it damaging winds, a dangerous storm surge and heavy rainfall over the Yucatán Peninsula and Belize.

Announcing the deployment of hundreds of military personnel, marines, and electricity workers in anticipation of damage that the hurricane will bring, Civil Protection national coordinator Laura Velazquez warned of intense rains.

"We will have intense rains and wind gusts" from Thursday, he said.

As of Wednesday night, Beryl was packing maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (209.21 km/h), said the NHC. While the force of the winds is expected to weaken somewhat in the next day or two, the NHC warned that Beryl would remain at or near major hurricane strength as it passed the Cayman Islands.

The Mexican government has prepared 112 shelters, each with a capacity to shelter around 20,000 people. Furthermore, schools have been suspended in the state of Quintana Roo, where Beryl is expected to hit with all its mighty force.

<h2>Hurricane Beryl's destruction&nbsp;</h2>

Even as the Hurricane moves towards Mexico, the NHC predicted that overnight, Jamaica may still experience "life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides from heavy rainfall".

Over 40,000 people have been left without power, reports Jamaica Gleaner newspaper, citing a public service company.

Furthermore, a curfew from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm has been declared by Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who has also urged the 2.8 million population to comply with evacuation orders.

Recent years have seen major oil companies making big climate pledges. However, a new report from Oil Change International suggests these are nothing but empty promises.&nbsp;

The report examined climate plans from the eight largest US and European-based oil and gas producers and found that none of them were in line with limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.&nbsp;

<h2>Which companies did the report evaluate?</h2>

BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Eni, Equinor, ExxonMobil, Shell, and TotalEnergies are the companies.

For its report, Oil Change International assessed the companies' plans on 10 criteria. It found that all eight big oil companies ranked as "grossly insufficient" or "insufficient" on nearly all criteria, reports The Guardian.&nbsp;

US firms Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and ExxonMobil were the "worst of the worst" and ranked "grossly insufficient" on all 10 of the criteria.&nbsp;

In a statement, Allie Rosenbluth, US programme manager at Oil Change International, said, "American fossil-fuel corporations are the worst of the worst."

The report has been endorsed by over 100 climate groups internationally and marks the fourth annual "Big Oil Reality Check" from Oil Change International.

<h2>Increasing global warming</h2>

In a statement, David Tong, co-author of the analysis, and global industry campaign manager at Oil Change International, said: "There is no evidence that big oil and gas companies are acting seriously to be part of the energy transition."

What more? The report also found that instead of limiting global warming, these companies' current oil and gas extraction plans could actually lead to more than 2.4°C of global temperature rise.

As per the report, the eight oil companies alone are on track to use 30 per cent&nbsp;of the world's remaining global carbon budget — to keep the global average temperature rise to 1.5C.

The report criticised the companies for their lack of ambition to curb fossil fuel exploration and production. None have plans to stop fossil fuel exploration or halt new extraction projects. In fact, six of the eight companies have explicit goals to increase oil and gas production.

Additionally, the report found that the companies' methods to curb greenhouse gas emissions lack integrity. None set comprehensive targets to rapidly and consistently curb emissions, and all plan to rely on methods like carbon capture and storage, which do not yet exist at scale, and carbon offsetting.

All eight firms also failed to "meet basic criteria for just transition plans for workers and communities where they operate," and none met "basic" human rights criteria.

Florida no longer considers Climate Change a priority. Defying "Radical green zealots," Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Wednesday (May 15) signed a new legislation that will see Climate Change disappear from state statutes.

The legislation, which is set to take effect from July 1, will also see a ban on power-generating wind turbines offshore or near the state's lengthy coastline.

Critics of the legislation, as per the news agency AP, say that the measure ignores the reality of climate change threats in Florida. This includes projections of rising seas, extreme heat and flooding, and increasingly severe storms.

<h2>The new Florida legislation</h2>

Starting July 1, the measure, as per a news release from the Florida governor's office, would also boost expansion of natural gas, reduce regulations on gas pipelines in the state and increase protections against bans on gas appliances such as stoves.

The legislation will erase several instances of the word "climate change" from state statutes. Additionally, it removes over 50 lines specifically related to addressing the matter of climate change from the state law, which were enacted in 2008 during the tenure of the-then Republican Governor Charlie Crist.&nbsp;

The sections of the existing law that will be erased include a provision for addressing the "potential of global climate change" as a state energy policy, and a provision for the state to "play a leading role in developing and implementing energy management programs aimed at promoting energy conservation, energy security, and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions."

It also removes provisions mandating that state agencies shall hold meetings and conferences only in hotels or conference facilities that have received the "Green Lodging" designation from the Department of Environmental Protection "for best practices in water, energy, and waste efficiency standards, unless the responsible state agency head makes a determination that no other viable alternative exists."

As per a legislative analysis of the bill as published on the Florida Gov website, the priority is to ensure "an adequate, reliable and cost-effective supply of energy for the state in a manner that promotes the health and welfare of the public and economic growth".

Rising sea levels threaten Thailand's capital, Bangkok, with relocation, according to a senior official from the country's climate change office.

The low-lying Bangkok risks being submersed by the ocean before the end of the century, according to the projections. The bustling capital already battles flooding during the rainy season.

The city might not be able to adapt with the world on its current warming pathway, warned Pavich Kesavawong, deputy director-general of the government's department of climate change and environment.

"I believe we are beyond the 1.5 degrees Celsius already," Kesavawong told AFP, referring to the increase in global temperatures from pre-industrial levels.&nbsp;

"Now we have to think about adaptation. I suppose Bangkok will be under water, if we stay in our (current) circumstance," he further said.

Bangkok is considering building sea walls, similar to those in the Netherlands, to combat rising waters. However, relocation of the city is also being discussed, according to a government official.&nbsp;

Kesavawong emphasised that these talks are still in the early stages and that moving the capital would be a very complex undertaking.

"Personally I think it's a good choice, so we can separate the capital, the government areas, and business areas," he added.

Indonesia is another country facing a similar situation. It will&nbsp;inaugurate its new capital Nusantara this year, which will replace sinking Jakarta as the country's political centre.

Thailand is suffering the effects of climate change as farmers struggle&nbsp;with high temperature and drought, while tourism is affected by coral bleaching and pollution.

It has closed several national parks in response to recent coral bleaching while further closures are possible.

Despite government efforts, including new clean air legislation and increased fire prevention measures in national parks, air pollution, especially in northern Thailand, remains a significant challenge.

Climate Change can threaten our homes but as per a new research, extreme weather can also harm our brain health, making disorders like anxiety and depression worse.

Researchers from University College London, as per a study published in Lancet Neurology, have found a concerning&nbsp;link between environmental changes and neurological health.

<h2>What is the correlation?</h2>

Researchers analysed the impact of extreme weather on 19 nervous system conditions, including stroke, Alzheimer’s, meningitis, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. They also looked at psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia.

They discovered that there was a "clear evidence for an impact of the climate on some brain conditions, especially stroke and infections of the nervous system".

"The climatic variation that was shown to have an effect on brain diseases included extremes of temperature, both low and high, and greater temperature variation throughout the course of day, especially when these measures were seasonally unusual," said Professor Sanjay Sisodiya, director of genomics at University College London's epilepsy society.

He said that nighttime temperatures mean hotter nights, which can disrupt sleep. This is "particularly important" as hotter temperature and heatwaves mean billions of people globally are sleeping through higher than normal temperatures.

They also observed an increase in hospital admissions, disability, and stroke due to higher temperatures or heatwaves.

In continuation of a damning 11-month trend, last month (April) was once again the hottest April on record. Every month for the past 11 months, the world has set a new temperature record.

On Wednesday (May 8), the European Union's climate change monitoring service in its monthly bulletin said that each month since June 2023 has ranked as the planet's hottest on record. This is in comparison to the months in previous years.

The dataset maintained by C3S contains historical information dating back to as early as 1940. To validate their findings, scientists also compared this record&nbsp;with other available data and established that last month was the hottest April on record, surpassing any previous April temperatures during the pre-industrial period.

<h2>What is behind this rise in temperatures?</h2>

Greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels have been identified as the main culprit behind climate change.

Recent months also saw El Niño, a natural phenomenon which warms the surface waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean, raising&nbsp;temperatures.

The extremes, including months of record-breaking sea surface temperatures, have led scientists to question whether human activities have now triggered a tipping point in the planet's climate system.

"I think many scientists have asked the question whether there could be a shift in the climate system," said Julien Nicolas, C3S Senior Climate Scientist as quoted by AFP.

Already, scientists have confirmed that climate change was behind some specific weather extremes last month. This includes the heatwave in the Sahel that has&nbsp;potential links to thousands of deaths.&nbsp;

Experts warn that the Earth is perilously close to breaching the 1.5 degree Celsius target set by the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Hayley Fowler, a climate scientist at Newcastle University, told AFP that she thinks "we have already lost the battle".

"At what point do we declare we've lost the battle to keep temperatures below 1.5? My personal opinion is we've already lost that battle, and we really need to think very seriously about keeping below 2C and reducing our emissions as fast as we can," she said.

Technically, the world is yet to breach the 1.5C target as it refers to the average global temperature over decades. However, some scientists warn that meeting the target is no longer realistic.

Have we 'already lost climate battle'?: April continues damning 11-month trend, emerges as hottest since 1940

The&nbsp;climate crisis and rising global temperatures pose a significant challenge for bumblebees, mirroring the struggles&nbsp;faced by humans&nbsp;in adapting to increasingly uninhabitable conditions.

Research conducted by the University of Guelph in Canada delved into historical studies dating back to the 1800s, shedding light on bumblebee behaviour amidst changing climatic conditions. Regardless of their species or geographic location, bumblebees&nbsp;exhibit a preference for&nbsp;nest temperatures ranging from approximately 28 to 32 degrees Celsius (82-90 degrees Fahrenheit). However, when nest temperatures exceed the threshold of 36 degrees Celsius (97 degrees Fahrenheit), the bees' reproductive capabilities are compromised, highlighting the critical role of temperature regulation in their survival.

These findings underscore the growing concerns surrounding the impact of climate change on bumblebee populations worldwide. Despite their remarkable ability to thermoregulate, bumblebees face significant challenges in maintaining suitable nesting conditions as temperatures&nbsp;continue to&nbsp;rise.

The decline of numerous bumblebee species linked to climate change presents difficulty for researchers. While the correlation between rising temperatures and declining populations is evident, pinpointing a singular causative factor remains elusive.

These revelations highlight the urgent need for concerted action to mitigate the impacts of climate change on bumblebee population. Efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions, preserve bumblebee habitats, and promote sustainable practices are imperative to safeguard these invaluable pollinators and the ecosystems they inhabit.

Research conducted by the University of Guelph in Canada delved into historical studies dating back to the 1800s, shedding light on bumblebee behaviour amidst changing climatic conditions. Regardless of their species or geographic location, bumblebees exhibit a preference for nest temperatures ranging from approximately 28 to 32 degrees Celsius (82-90 degrees Fahrenheit). Despite their remarkable ability to thermoregulate, bumblebees face significant challenges in maintaining suitable nesting conditions as temperatures continue to rise. Rising temperatures endangering bumblebee nests, study finds

A new tax proposal which targets fossil fuel giants within the world's richest economies could raise hundreds of billions of dollars to aid vulnerable nations grappling with the adverse effects of climate change.&nbsp;

The "Climate Damages Tax" report, unveiled on Monday (Apr 29), advocates for an additional levy on carbon emissions by fossil fuel entities located in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries.&nbsp;

<h2>Would the tax make significant contributions to the fight against climate change?</h2>

As per the Guardian, projections suggest that the levy could potentially raise $720 billion (£580 billion) by the end of this decade.

The authors of the report calculate that if the tax takes effect in 2024, initially at $5 per tonne of CO2 equivalent, escalating by $5 annually, by 2030 it would raise around $900 billion in total.

Of the forecasted revenue, $720 billion would be earmarked for the international loss and damage fund, they propose. The remaining $180 billion could be redistributed as a "domestic dividend," supporting communities within richer nations with a fair climate transition.

As per David Hillman, the director of the Stamp Out Poverty campaign and co-author of the report, this "demonstrates that the richest, most economically powerful countries, with the greatest historical responsibility for climate change, need look no further than their fossil fuel industries to collect tens of billions a year in extra income by taxing them far more rigorously."

"This is surely the fairest way to boost revenues for the loss and damage fund to ensure that it is sufficiently financed as to be fit for purpose," he added.

The report&nbsp;has the backing of dozens of climate organisations worldwide, including Greenpeace, Stamp Out Poverty, Power Shift Africa and Christian Aid.&nbsp;

The proposed tax, as per Areeba Hamid, a joint director at Greenpeace UK, is an equitable strategy to compel the fossil fuel sector "to stop drilling and start paying for the damage they are causing around the world".
