Researchers at United States' Pennsylvania State University decided to put the theorised "wet bulb temperature" to the test — the point at which sweat no longer evaporates off the skin, leading to heatstroke and eventually death. This was earlier measured using wet cloth and thermometers.

Measuring the core temperatures of healthy, young people inside a heat chamber, researchers found that the study participants reached their "critical environmental limit" at a wet bulb temperature of 30.6 degree&nbsp;Celsius, much lower than previously theorised.

Climate change and temperature rise

The previously thought heat, humidity-bearing capacity of humans (35 degrees Celsius) as per an AFP report has only been breached a few times, particularly in South Asia and the Persian Gulf.&nbsp;

Climate change, however, is leading to an increase in dangerous wet bulb events, with the frequency of such events doubling over the past 40 years, said Colin Raymond of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory while talking to AFP.

Raymond's research indicates that if the world warms 2.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, these wet bulb events will get even more frequent.

A recent report by&nbsp;European Union's climate change service Copernicus shows that oceans&nbsp;have hit their hottest-ever recorded temperature.&nbsp;Beating a 2016 record, the daily global sea surface temperatures have reached 20.96C, which is far above the average for this time of the year, reports BBC. In 2016, a record was set when the naturally occurring El Niño was in full swing.

Experts warn that extreme heat events, even below the 35-degree limit, can be deadly. They say that different people have different thresholds based on factors such as age, health, and even socioeconomic conditions.&nbsp;They point out that people least able to protect themselves from extreme heat will suffer the most.&nbsp;

Approximately a quarter of Thailand's Upper Gulf is presently affected, with roughly half appearing green, while the other portion nearer the shore has turned brown due to pollution and the presence of deceased plankton, notes the scientist.

Tanuspong explains the fate of the plankton: "The plankton in the water will (either) consume all the nutrients and thrive, or they will die due to a lack of light. Their carcasses will then sink to the seabed and decompose." This decomposition process contributes to low oxygen conditions in the water, further impacting marine life.

Along this coastline, more than 260 mussel farming plots float, and over 80 per cent of them have already borne the brunt of the bloom, reports an official from the Chonburi Fisheries Association.

According to data from the Department of Fisheries in 2021, Chonburi typically produces 2,086 tonnes (4.6 million lbs) of mussels annually, valued at 26,655,000 Thai Baht ($1 million).

The US government agency said that the hurricane should weaken before hitting the US West Coast this weekend. However, they warned that nevertheless, it will bring dangerous rains.

"If you've got weekend plans, it's probably time to start altering those plans," said NHC Deputy Director Jamie Rhome, as per the report. Rhome warned that the area from San Diego to Los Angeles and Las Vegas faced flood risks, in particular Palm Springs area will be at high risk when the storm hits this weekend.

<h2>Category 4 storm</h2>

As per the NHC advisory, hurricane Hilary was moving West northwest at nearly 12 mph or 19 kilometres per hour. The storm is packing a maximum sustained wind of nearly 130 mph or 215 kilometres per hour. It was upgraded to a category 4 storm overnight.&nbsp;

Rhome said that while icy waters of the California coastline typically weaken hurricanes and tropical storms, "this system is expected to hold on to its strength because it will be moving fast."

After a record-breaking summer heat wave, hurricane Hilary's heavy rainfall is expected to hit California Nevada and neighbouring Arizona. In July, Phoenix, Arizona, both endured a month-long stretch of temperatures that exceeded 110 degrees Fahrenheit or 43 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

Shortly after the massive tremor struck Bogotá, an aftershock of magnitude 5.9 followed, as reported by the CGS on social media. As per Reuters, another&nbsp;aftershock was measured at 4.8 magnitude.

Netizens reported that the earthquake was also felt in nearby cities, including Villavicencio, Bucaramanga, Tunja, and Ibague. All of these are located in the vicinity of the quake's epicentre.

The study published in the journal Frontiers in Environmental Science found that in February, for the first time since satellite monitoring started keeping a track of Antarctica's summer ice, levels have reached this low.

In 2023, the sea ice minimum reached levels 20 per cent lower than the average levels recorded in the last 40 years. This, as per Tim Naish, director of the Antarctic Research Centre at New Zealand's Victoria University of Wellington, equals to sea loss nearly 10 times the area of New Zealand. Naish was not a part of this study.

"In some cases we are getting close to tipping points, which once crossed will lead to irreversible changes with unstoppable consequences for future generations," he added.

As per Caroline Holmes, one of the study's co-authors, "It's going to take decades if not centuries for these things to recover. There's no quick fix to replacing this ice."

"It will certainly take a long time, even if it's possible," said Holmes, a polar climate scientist at British Antarctic Survey.

The study says that the burning of fossil fuels is a driving force behind Global warming. This has made Antarctica vulnerable to extreme events, and the impact is "virtually certain" to get worse, it claims.

While it is certain that climate change will "lead to increases in the size and frequency" of heatwaves, ice shelf collapses and declines in sea ice in Antarctica, the precise impact has been hard to measure.

Scientists, as per Reuters, have struggled to measure the exact extent to which global warming is affecting the thickness of Antarctic ice. However, as per Martin Siegert, a glaciologist at the University of Exeter and a co-author of the study, it's "scientifically reasonable" to assume that extreme events are going to get more frequent.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg&nbsp;has pulled out of an appearance at the upcoming Edinburgh International Book Festival, citing alleged links of sponsoring firm&nbsp;to the fossil fuel industry.

The annual festival was due to take place on August 13th (Sunday) and Thunberg was due to speak at an event called 'It's Not Too Late To Change The World' at the Edinburgh Playhouse.

However, she said that she would not attend the festival because it recieves sponsorship from the Baillie Gifford investment firm, which she claimed "invests heavily in the fossil fuel industry".

Accusing the fossil fuel industry of "greenwashing" by sponsoring cultural events, Thunberg said she does not want to be associated with it.

"Greenwashing efforts by the fossil fuel industry, including sponsorship of cultural events, allows them to keep the social licence to continue operating."

<h2>Baillie Gifford's rebuttal</h2>

Baillie Gifford, which is an investment management firm, as per BBC, has been a sponsor of&nbsp;the Edinburgh book festival for over 19 years.

The company, however, said that it was not a significant fossil fuel investor. It also claims that compared to the market average of 11 per cent,&nbsp;only about two per cent of its clients' money is invested into fossil fuels.

"Of those companies, some have already moved most of their business away from fossil fuels, and many are helping to drive the transition to clean energy," added a company spokesperson.

"The Book Festival exists to give a platform for debate and discussion around key issues affecting humanity today - including the climate emergency.

"We would not be in a position to provide that platform without the long-term support of organisations such as Baillie Gifford," said Barley as quoted by BBC.

"We strongly believe that Baillie Gifford are part of the solution to the climate emergency. They are early investors in progressive climate positive companies, providing funds to help them grow".

Apologising to people who had purchased the tickets hoping to see the young climate activist, he said they will be refunded in full.&nbsp;

Oceans play an important role in the grand scheme of things. They are a vital climate regulator, soaking up heat, producing half the Earth's oxygen and driving weather patterns.

Warmer temperatures can negatively affect these abilities. Water loses some of its ability to absorb carbon dioxide upon heating up, this means that the gas which contributes to warming the planet stays in the atmosphere. This can also accelerate the melting of glaciers, which in turn flow into oceans, finally contributing to rising sea levels.&nbsp;

Further, hotter ocean water also affects marine life. Fishes and whales are known to move in search of cooler water, which disturbs the food chain. Other species, like sharks, are known to get more aggressive.

<h2>A hot bath or the ocean?</h2>

Talking to BBC, Dr Kathryn Lesneski, who is monitoring a marine heatwave in the Gulf of Mexico for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, compared the water temperatures to a bath.

She said that due to the rising water temperatures, "There is widespread coral bleaching at shallow reefs in Florida and many corals have already died."

Experts, as per BBC, warn that this can also affect fish stocks.

"The fact that we've seen the record now makes me nervous about how much warmer the ocean may get between now and next March," says Dr Samantha Burgess, from the Copernicus Climate Change Service.

According to Okinawa's power company, nearly 35 per cent of the total families in the region or 220,580 households were left with no electricity early on Wednesday.

<h2>Evacuation efforts</h2>

Across Okinawa and the southern part of the Kagoshima region, an evacuation warning was put in place. As per the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, they've urged more than 690,000 residents to move to safety.

Public broadcaster NHK reported that a 90-year-old man died after getting trapped under a collapsed bridge on Tuesday evening. As per the report, strong winds were probably the cause. Another fatality&nbsp;was also reported from Okinawa, however, the exact cause of death is yet to be disclosed.

Further, 41 people were reported injured in Okinawa and Kagoshima prefectures, reports The Guardian.

At around 2300 GMT, the typhoon was about 70 kilometres south of Okinawa's remote Kumejima island. It was moving west-northwest, reported the Japan Meteorological Agency, adding that it was expected to cross to eastern China later in the week.

The ability to predict earthquakes has long eluded scientists, as the search for reliable precursors — early indicators of an impending earthquake — has remained fruitless.&nbsp;

However, two researchers may have made a significant breakthrough in this field. According to their findings, earthquakes could potentially be detected through GPS measurements, and that too 'several hours' before the main event.

<h2>How will this work?</h2>

Quentin Bletery, a seismologist at the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement and the Université Côte d'Azur in France, believes that this discovery is a significant step forward.

"Conceptually, that tells you that it is possible to do it," he said, as quoted by Space.com.&nbsp;

By analysing a dataset maintained by the University of Nevada at Reno, Bletery and his colleague Jean-Mathieu Nocquet focused on GPS stations located near known earthquake zones with magnitudes of 7.0 or higher.&nbsp;

They examined the recorded positions of these stations in the 48 hours leading up to each earthquake, comparing the actual motion with the expected motion caused by the quake.

Their research revealed that in the final two hours before an earthquake, the ground's motion often began to align with the expected motion, intensifying as the time of the quake approached. This pattern was not typically observed during randomly selected two-hour windows when no&nbsp;earthquakes happened. These findings suggest that the motion observed in the final two hours may serve as precursors to earthquakes.

<h2>Is this the ultimate protection plan?</h2>

The research, published in the journal Science, provides valuable insights into earthquake behaviour and offers hope for future advancements in earthquake prediction.

Despite this breakthrough, seismologists, as per the report, still face significant challenges in transforming this knowledge into a reliable earthquake prediction method.&nbsp;

Current instruments are not sensitive enough to detect this motion in advance. Bletery estimates that existing equipment would need to be approximately 50 times more sensitive to detect precursors to earthquakes.

"That's a huge technological gap," said Bletery,&nbsp;adding, "we just don't have the technology yet to do it."

The study revealed that 61,672 deaths were linked to the heat between May 30 and September 4 of that year. The week of July 18-24 alone accounted for over 11,600 deaths due to an intense heatwave.

Hicham Achebak, an INSERM researcher and co-author of the study, described the number of deaths as "very high" and emphasised the need for further measures to protect the population.

Talking to AFP, he said: "We knew the effect of heat on mortality after 2003, but with this analysis, we see that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to protect the population."

The study highlighted that France — a jump of 2.43 degrees Celsius — experienced the largest increase in heat compared to its previous summer average, followed closely by Switzerland (2.30C), Italy (2.28C), and Hungary (2.13C).

Italy at 18,010, however, recorded the highest death toll associated with the heat, followed by Spain (11,324) and Germany (8,173).

The research predicted future scenarios if no action is taken to protect people from rising temperatures. As per the study, by 2030, Europe could witness over 68,000 heat-related deaths every summer.

By 2040, this number could rise to over 94,000, and by 2050, it could surpass 120,000.

"These predictions are based on the current level of vulnerability and future temperatures," said Achebak adding that "if we take very effective measures, that vulnerability can be reduced."

Global oil demand rose by 2.9 million barrels per day in 2022, reaching an average of 97.3 million bpd, driven in part by the resumption of global economic activity after the Covid pandemic.&nbsp;

Although renewable energy sources, excluding hydropower, met 7.5 per cent of the world's energy demand in 2022 — which is a 1 per cent increase from the previous year — the rise was overshadowed by a modest 1.1 increase in global energy consumption. Severe flooding and landslides triggered by monsoon rains in eastern Nepal have resulted in deaths of two people, with 28 others reported missing, according to officials.&nbsp;

There is an urgent need for free access to climate-smart technologies, such as drought-resistant seeds and efficient irrigation systems, to empower vulnerable farmers to adapt to the ceaseless mutations of their ecological tapestries.

The need of the hour is collaborative synergies between governments, non-governmental organisations, and communities that will engender adaptation initiatives that remain firmly rooted in local realities, thus maximising efficacy.

Moreover, the preservation and restoration of fragile ecosystems emerge as milestones in mitigating climate change. Another tried and tested method is: rewilding. Taking a step back and allowing nature to heal itself naturally is the most logical step. Rewilding mitigates climate change by restoring ecosystems, reviving wildlife, and enhancing biodiversity. With climate change steadily affecting the Earth's temperatures, the need to stay cool has become more pressing.&nbsp;As per a recent report, to combat the heat, billions of people are now opting for cheap, pocket-friendly air conditioners that are further adding to the rising temperatures.

In tropical countries,&nbsp;the rising temperatures have increasingly begun pushing normal summer temperatures into dangerous territory, and in temperate countries, heat waves that were previously unimaginable are becoming more common.

<h2>How are people dealing with the heat?</h2>

According to a report by Sustainable Energy for All, to deal with the rising temperatures, approximately 2.4 billion rural and urban poor individuals are on the verge of purchasing the most affordable cooling appliance available to them, regardless of its efficiency.

The report states that while the mass adoption of inexpensive air conditioners may serve as a quick solution to combat the effects of a hotter climate, it also poses complications for the global energy transition.

<h2>How air conditioners are landing us in 'hot soup'</h2>

In a special report released in 2018, the International Energy Agency (IEA) had warned that cooling would be "one of the leading contributors to global electricity demand over the next three decades".&nbsp;The IEA estimates that approximately 10 new air conditioners will be sold every second between now and 2050.

The increased use of air conditioning puts additional strain on local power supplies and undermines efforts to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.

<h2>How much energy are air conditioners consuming?</h2>

Currently, space cooling—which includes fans, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners—consumes over 2,000 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity annually. To put this into perspective, that is two and a half times the total electricity used across Africa. As per the IEA, this&nbsp;accounts for around 10 per cent of global electricity consumption.&nbsp;

Bloomberg reports that based on existing policies and targets, this demand is projected to surge more than three times, to 6,200 TWh by 2050, with nearly 70 per cent of the increase attributed to residential air conditioning units.

In certain regions, such as parts of the US and the Middle East, space cooling already surpasses two-thirds of peak electricity demand on hot days. For instance, in Saudi Arabia, air conditioning alone accounts for 70 per cent of the country's total annual electricity demand.&nbsp;

The report predicts that countries with anticipated significant growth in cooling demand, particularly India, China, and Indonesia, would need to invest in substantial and expensive peak power capacity to meet the projected cooling needs.

In the worst-case scenario where new technologies for improving appliance efficiency are not adopted, this figure could surpass 100 per cent.

The report warns that even with improving AC efficiency, if renewable energy capacity does not continue to expand, the impact of millions more air conditioners would be far more significant. By 2030, it could result in over 2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per year, surpassing the entire emissions of the European Union in 2021.

However, as per Greenpeace, in the first three months of 2023, local governments in&nbsp;"energy-hungry" Chinese provinces have approved at least 20.45 gigawatts (GW) of coal-fired power.

This, according to AFP, is more than double the 8.63 GW which Greenpeace reported for the same time period last year&nbsp;and surpasses the 18.55 GW approved for the entirety of 2021.

In February, the Global Energy Monitor (GEM) released a study according to&nbsp;which last year China approved the largest expansion of coal-fired power plants since 2015.

Co-author Marie-Elodie Perga, a professor at the UNIL Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics, suggested&nbsp;that media should strive to "show that climate change has direct consequences on our lifestyles, our immediate environment or our finances".

Another study co-author, Fabrizio Butera, a UNIL psychology professor warned&nbsp;that such coverage can be harmful and that "individuals exposed to these facts, not feeling directly concerned by them, will tend towards a peripheral, superficial and distracted treatment of the information."

"If the goal of mediating research is to have a societal impact, then it seems that we are pushing all the buttons that don't work," said Perga.

The researchers argued that fear can lead to behavioural change, but only if the problem presented is accompanied by solutions. Research on human behaviour has shown that people are more likely to take action when they believe there is a way to mitigate the problem. Selective and purely descriptive articles that only highlight the negative aspects of climate change can be counterproductive and may result in people ignoring the problem altogether. Thus, they said it is essential to emphasise potential solutions and inspire a sense of empowerment to address the issue, rather than solely focusing on the negative impacts of climate change.

In southern California, United States, the ongoing "winter weather drama" took a wilder turn as a tornado on Wednesday tore through the city, ripping roofs off of buildings and smashing cars around. The tornado, as per AFP, raked the city of Montebello near Los Angeles. Residents were left scrambling for safety as the storm destroyed cars, broke windows and created a "mess." Aerial pictures taken after the tornado showed several roofs with holes in them, pipes and other installations twisted and broken, and vehicles appear to have been dragged out of their parking spaces.

Speaking to broadcaster KTLA, one local business owner described his experience of suddenly coming face to face with the storm and said he was driving when he "saw this tornado in front of me and had to reverse out."

The National Weather Service (NWS) said it was investigating the "weak tornado," and another one that hit Carpinteria, near Santa Barbara. The two storms, as per the weather agency, had winds of up to 85 miles an hour.

As per NWS, the southern Californian storm "damaged around 25 mobile home units and there was minor tree damage to the cemetery adjacent to the mobile home park."

Small tornado in California leaves cars and buildings damaged

As a severe heatwave pushes temperatures in several regions including Sydney, Australian officials on Tuesday warned of a soaring risk of bushfires. Temperatures, as per Reuters, are rising to reach their highest levels in two years. Currently, Australia's most populous state of New South Wales (NSW) has 33 active fires, 12 of which are yet to be contained. Due to the fires, five public schools have been shut, and a total fire ban is in place across large parts of the state.

On Monday, many regions in NSW recorded their hottest day since January 2021. In some places, temperatures hit more than 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). On Tuesday, temperatures are forecasted to reach mid-to-high 30 degrees Celsius. Conditions are expected to ease starting Thursday.

However, the Bureau of Meteorology has warned that hot and dry conditions, accompanied by gusty winds, will elevate fire danger levels.&nbsp;

Other estimates put the number of people left without power at more than one million.

The weather on Friday left 60 million people under the threat of a severe storm. Additionally, nearly 80 million people in Texas, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and more were under high wind alerts.

Citing the research institute, Reuters reports that the iceberg calved "following years of naturally occurring cracks that finally extended across the shelf and caused the new iceberg to break free".

"This calving event has been expected and is part of the natural behaviour of the Brunt Ice Shelf," said BAS glaciologist Dominic Hodgson. "It is not linked to climate change," he added.

As per Science Alert, in 2016-17, the Halley VI Research Station had to be relocated due to the widening of the Chasm-1. reportedly, at the time cracks started appearing in the ice, and this threatened to cut off the research facility. Since the relocation staff is deployed there during the Antarctic summer months between November and March. The rest of the year, when temperatures fall below minus 50 degrees Celsius (-58 degrees Fahrenheit) and it is dark for 24 hours, they operate remotely.

This is the second major calving incident in two years. Previously in May 2021, an iceberg four times the size of Abu Dhabi broke off from the Ronne Ice Shelf and fell into the ocean in Antarctica.

The United Kingdom arm of the environmental group Extinction Rebellion on Sunday said it would change its protest tactics and would no longer stage its infamous blockades of transport networks.

In a statement titled "We quit," the group said that in four years it has been taking direct action but very little has changed.&nbsp;

Previously the group has used blockade of key roads and bridges, oil refineries, spraying fake blood over ministry buildings and smashing windows of the Barclays bank headquarters as their protest tactic.&nbsp;

"This year, we prioritise attendance over arrest and relationships over roadblocks, as we stand together and become impossible to ignore."

In Jordan's Petra thousands of visitors had to be evacuated from a famed archaeological site as heavy rains triggered flooding at the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Official sources as per Jordan News said that an incident involving a bus that was tipped over due to torrential rains has resulted in the death of three people in the Maan governorate south of the Kingdom. Maan's energy operations centre said that the bus was on its way to the Al-Hussein Bin Talal University.

Elsewhere too the downpours are affecting citizens. In the city of Aqaba and the Dead Sea, a flash flood warning has been issued. Authorities as per Jordan News Agency have warned that heavy rainfall in the area may be accompanied by thunder and hail and it might trigger flash floods in the valley and low areas.

The weather department too has warned of poor horizontal visibility due to fog in the highlands and in the Badia areas it'll be so because of dust. &nbsp;
