After South Korean authorities tightened restrictions on public gatherings amid the spread of coronavirus,&nbsp;Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ suffered a severe blow in the wake of&nbsp;aiming for a wider release.

'Tenet' is due for wide release in Korea on Wednesday. In two days of previews this weekend, the Warner Bros title grossed an estimated $717K on about 590 screens with limited capacity.

Presales for Tenet have been very strong in the market. Nearly all available Imax shows had been sold out as of midweek last week, according to exhibition giant CGV.&nbsp;

But with tightened social-distancing guidelines limiting indoor gatherings to 50 people in the greater Seoul region, CGV lowered seating capacity to 50%, suspending its ticket booking service.&nbsp;

On Sunday, authorities said masks will be mandatory throughout Seoul, with the city applying a “one strike and you’re out” policy on facilities that must be closed. Those include cinemas under Level 3. A violation would result in a two-week suspension of operations, and fines also might be imposed.

Warner Bros. upcoming film ‘Tenet’ by Christopher Nolan will soon come to theatres but there’s a catch.&nbsp;

The studio has confirmed that they will only let theaters screen the film if they adhere to proper health protocols.

These protocols were drafted by the National Association of Theater Owners, in a document titled the NATO Proposed Health &amp; Safety Guidelines. Under these guidelines, moviegoers must wear a face covering while inside the theater. Other protocols include daily symptom and/or temperature checks for employees, as well as disinfecting auditoriums between screenings and staggering screenings to enforce social distancing.
&nbsp;
The studio sent a letter to theatre chains that read: "These special terms are being offered to its exhibitor customers specifically for ‘Tenet’ to address the special circumstances in the market… including the high commercial risk from uncertain consumer demand, reopening rules, health and safety regulations, and socially distancing capacity issues."

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, ‘Tenet’ stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branaugh, Dimple Kapadia, Martin Donovan, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Himesh Patel, Clémence Poésy, Denzil Smith and Michael Caine.&nbsp;

Chinese cinemas reopened in regions at low risk for COVID-19 on July 20, taking in $ 12.6 million&nbsp;in their opening weekend. Currently, around 44 per cent of its cinemas are back in business but have been required to operate at just 30 per cent capacity to allow for social distancing, as well as reduce their total number of screenings to half their usual tally.

The guidelines for reopening released by the National Film Bureau request that cinemas, not screen films that are over two hours long - which could potentially pose problems for 'Tenet',&nbsp;which runs at two hours and 31 minutes.This directive was soon contradicted, however, by Chinese authorities subsequent approval of numerous films longer than two hours for nationwide theatrical release.

These include 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone' and Nolan's own 'Interstellar'&nbsp;- currently scheduled for a theatrical re-run starting August 2, as well as local blockbusters already in play like 'Operation Red Sea'.

It is now prepared to open in around 70 countries abroad starting on Aug. 26, including the U.K., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea and Russia.

The only exceptions are 'Dunkirk' and 'The Dark Knight Rises', for which China was the second largest market globally behind the U.K., and 'Batman Begins', which hit the Middle Kingdom&nbsp;all the way back in 2005, when its box office was still comparatively nascent of the Nolan-directed films like 'Dunkirk' made $ 51 million in China in 2017, while 'Interstellar' grossed $ 122 million there in 2014.

The 'Dark Knight Rises'&nbsp;grossed $ 52.8 million&nbsp;in 2012 and 'Inception' $&nbsp;68.4 million in 2010. Films executive produced by Nolan have also seen strong showings in the country. They include 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'&nbsp;with 96 million USD, 'Justice League' with $ 106 million, 'Transcendence' with $ 20 million , and 'Man of Steel'&nbsp;with $ 63 million.

It was being considered as the big-ticket film of 2020 post-pandemic but looks like Christopher Nolan's 'Tenet' will take time to hit the big screen. The makers, Warner Bros. on Monday stated that it was delaying indefinitely the release of the film owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

The move will considerably affect the theatre chains in America that were hoping to bounce back to business despite the coronavirus pandemic.

'Tenet' was scheduled to release on August 12 in theatres across the US. It was the first major Hollywood movie to hit screens post-shutdown in mid-March.

"Unfortunately, the pandemic continues to proliferate, causing us to reevaluate our release dates," Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich said in a statement.

"We will share a new 2020 release date imminently for `Tenet`," he added.

This isn't the first time that the film's release has been changed. It was originally due for release on July 17, then changed to July 31, and later to August 12.

America's AMC Entertainment, Cinemark and Cineworld`s Regal Cinemas were scheduled to be back in business on July 31, with safeguards including limited attendance, extra cleaning and face masks for guests and workers.

But New York city movie theaters, and those in Los Angeles - the two biggest markets in the United States - still do not have the green light from city authorities to reopen as coronavirus cases and deaths have spiked again.

According to Variety, the USD 200 million budget film was initially slated to hit the theatres on July 17 but was later postponed to July 31. The film was primed to reignite the fire of moviegoing after a long COVID-19 induced shutdown.
"Warner Bros. is committed to bringing `Tenet` to audiences in theatres, on the big screen, when exhibitors are ready and public health officials say it is time," Variety quoted Warner Bros. spokesperson as saying.

"At this moment, what we need to be is flexible, and we are not treating this as a traditional movie release. We are choosing to open the movie mid-week to allow audiences to discover the film on their own time, and we plan to play longer, over an extended play period far beyond the norm, to develop a very different yet successful release strategy," the spokesperson added.

The latest push back in the release of the action-thriller comes after the New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the theatres in the state will reopen in phase 4.

The film features John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh.

Makers of `Tenet` have once again delayed its release and the film will now premiere on August 12. Also see: 'Tenet' trailer: Christopher Nolan's latest sci-fi looks mysterious and twisted According to Variety, the USD 200 million budget film was initially slated to hit the theatres on July 17 but was later postponed to July 31. (With inputs from ANI)

Release of Christopher Nolan's 'Tenet' pushed back again due to COVID-19

Director Christopher&nbsp;Nolan's thriller "Tenet" will debut in cinemas on July 31, distributor Warner Bros. said on Friday, the first new blockbuster in months for movie theaters that need fresh films to lure audiences after pandemic-related closures.

Theaters are starting to reopen worldwide since going dark in mid-March to help slow the spread of the novel coronavirus. Cinema operators hope "Tenet" and other blockbusters will help create a late-summer rebound.

The "Tenet" release date announced Friday is two weeks later than the previously planned July 17 debut. But Warner Bros., a unit of AT&amp;T Inc, confirmed that one of the year's most highly anticipated movies will not face a longer delay as many in Hollywood feared.

Warner Bros. postponed another summer release, "Wonder Woman 1984" to October from August. Walt Disney Co's action epic "Mulan" is scheduled to reach theaters July 24.

"Tenet" is a big budget, science-fiction spy movie starring John David Washington and Robert Pattinson from the British director of hits like "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Inception." Little has been revealed about the plot.

"We're especially thrilled, in this complex and rapidly changing environment, to be bringing Christopher&nbsp;Nolan’s 'Tenet,' a global tentpole of jaw-dropping size, scope and scale, to theaters around the world on July 31," Warner Bros. Picture Group Chairman Toby Emmerich said.

"It's been longer than any of us could’ve imagined since we’ve seen a movie on the big screen," Emmerich added.

Studios need as many locations open as possible to make back their investments in big-budget movies. Theater attendance will be limited to enforce social-distancing requirements, and it is unclear how comfortable audiences will be to return to cinemas.

Large theater operators including AMC Entertainment Holdings and Cineworld Group Plc have said they expect most of their locations worldwide to be open in July.

A team of British divers who helped save a junior football team stranded in a<a href="http://13.232.42.114/south-asia/thailand-cave-rescue-the-survival-story-of-2018-186098"> flooded cave in Thailand </a>were among those awarded in Britain's traditional New Year Honours, announced on Friday.

The seven underwater specialists involved in the remarkable rescue were joined on the prestigious annual achievement list by Hollywood filmmaker Christopher Nolan and former supermodel Lesley Lawson, better known as Twiggy.

Other recipients include Monty Python actor Michael Palin and Jim Carter from "Downton Abbey", best-selling author Philip Pullman and leading Brexiteer lawmaker John Redwood.

Four of the divers were given awards for exceptional bravery while the three others were made Members of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Richard Stanton and John Volanthen — the first of the divers to reach the 12 stricken children and their coach — were awarded the George Medal, the country's second highest civilian gallantry award.

Stanton had already been made an MBE in 2012 for his rescue services.

Fellow divers Christopher Jewell and Jason Mallinson receive the Queen's Gallantry Medal, while Joshua Bratchley, Connor Roe and Vernon Unsworth were decorated with MBEs.

"For me, after saving the boys, this is the icing on the cake," said Unsworth, who has also risen in fame after suing Tesla entrepreneur <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/teslas-musk-is-sued-for-calling-thai-cave-rescuer-paedophile-166348">Elon Musk for labelling him a "pedo </a>guy".

Pullman, the creator of the hugely successful "His Dark Materials" trilogy, receives a knighthood for services to literature.

The 72-year-old said he was "very surprised and honoured" by the acknowledgement.

"I'm most grateful of all to those who continue to read my books, and I hope they don't have to work as hard as those who edit them," Pullman added.

The veteran actor, who has reinvented himself as a travel documentary maker and writer in later life, gets a knighthood for his international contributions to travel, culture and geography.

He said news of the accolade had yet to sink in. "I don't think it will be until I see the envelopes addressing me as Sir Michael Palin," he added.

Meanwhile, as Britain prepares to leave the European Union in March after decades of membership, John Redwood — one of parliament's most prominent eurosceptics — was made a knight.

Redwood was part of a group of eurosceptics who plotted to bring down the government of former Conservative prime minister John Major, who called them the "bastards".

The veteran Conservative lawmaker — a vocal opponent of Prime Minister Theresa May's draft Brexit deal, set to be voted on in mid-January — was among three MPs awarded knighthoods.

There had been speculation this year's honours could be deployed to try to win support for May's plan — but it appears unlikely with Redwood.

Earlier this week he published a blog outlining "eight things wrong with the withdrawal agreement".

Overall, 1,148 recipients were named in Queen Elizabeth II's 2019 New Year Honours List.

&nbsp;Filmmaker Christopher Nolan says the antagonists in Dark Knight trilogy defined the character of Batman in each of the films.

Nolan, who is credited to have given a subliminal edge to the role of Caped Crusader of Gotham in his superhero interpretation, says all three villains - Liam Neeson's Henri Ducard/ Ra's al Ghul, Heath Ledger's The Joker and Tom Hardy's Bane helped Bruce Wayne become a more layered part.

About 2005's origins story, 'Batman Begins', starring Christian Bale in the title role, Nolan said, "To me, each film is a different genre. They tend to be defined by the villain.

"The villain is an appropriate adversary. He's a mentor-turned-enemy."

According to Variety, the filmmaker was speaking at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival over the weekend. He made his debut at the annual gala and attended the premiere of a 70mm print of Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey'.&nbsp;

"'The Dark Knight' (2008 sequel) for me was always a crime drama in the mould of a Michael Mann film. The Joker was a terrorist, an agent of chaos set loose," he said.
Nolan, 47, called the 2012's final part, 'The Dark Knight Rises', as "This historical epic. Bane as a militarist foe helped that."

The director said he did not set out to create a 'Batman' franchise when they first collaborated with Warner Bros 13 years ago.&nbsp;

"We hadn't planned on doing a sequel. So shifting genres and the nature of the antagonist felt the way to take the audience on a journey and tell them something different about Bruce Wayne."

Nolan admitted he approached the comic book realm as a noir-thriller.&nbsp;

"Yes, it's a superhero, but it's based on ideas of guilt, fear, these strong impulses that the character has. Bruce Wayne doesn't have any superpowers other than extraordinary wealth.&nbsp;

"But really, he's just someone who does a lot of push-ups. In that sense, he's very relatable and human. I think that's why I gravitated towards it," he said

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has voiced his concern over the medium of film losing its importance in the digital world.

The 75-year-old actor, who met renowned filmmaker Christopher Nolan on Saturday in Mumbai to discuss about film preservation and restoration, said the cause deserves serious consideration and it is important that people from the film industry across the globe come together to save the medium.

Nolan is in India&nbspon a three day trip along with visual artist Tacita Dean to promote the cause of film preservation and restoration.

"Prominent dignitaries from the world of cinema gathered here in round table to debate and ascertain the importance of film heritage and its preservation. The word film has suddenly lost its charm for there does not seem to be any need to shoot films on film. It's all digital now.

"It was known as the 'film industry', they were known as 'film stars'. So in the complete absence of that medium and that product, it would be quite in order to call ourselves 'robotic genes' or words of similar sound -- 'digi act' or 'digi digi'-- It would be an issue that would need consideration," Bachchan wrote on his blog.

The actor said celluloid film is the "original format" and it is necessary to bring it back into the business.

"It (film) had greater aesthetic value, and its preservation, an essential for posterity of having an original, than one that has been manufactured digitally. Digital is a derivative of the original film print so how would you feel if a xerox copy of a Picasso were to be up at a museum for attention and appreciation. Film is the original, digital format is not and in time to come this format may retire too," he added.

Bachchan also shared few pictures from the roundtable event, which was attended by Shah Rukh Khan and Kamal Haasan among others.&nbsp

The 47-year-old director first arrived for the screening of "Dunkirk" with his producer wife Emma Thomas and Tacita, where they were greeted in traditional style with tilak and garland.

"We can't wait for this day when we are going to watch after 26 years a film on 70mm. Isn't it emotional? We are going to watch an original creation created by a creator, who is going to show us one of his most wonderful films. We are delighted to be part of 'Reframing the...'," Shivendra said.

Emma said Nolan always wanted to come to Indian with his film.

"Thank you very much for having us here. We always wanted to come to India with a film and we are sorry we are late. We are excited to present the film here, the way Chris had intended," Emma said.

Nolan said he was grateful for the welcome that he has received in India.

"I have been to India before for a brief period for 'The Dark Knight'. It is very exciting to be back here spending bit more time and for this great event that we have been doing with Tacita and Shivendra about 'Reframing the Future of Films'," he said.

The director said he was happy to screen "Dunkirk" in India.

"...It is exciting for us to see Indian audience see the film this way. We are excited about helping Shivendra bring attention to the cause of celluloid and future of cinema. I hope you enjoy the film," he said.

Looking at the packed house, Shivendra, said, we want more 70mm films in India and requested Nolan to have a retrospective of his films.

"Maybe sometime in the future...We could do that," Nolan said.

Later, they all arrived to equally enthusiastic audience for the screening of "Interstellar".

The director waved at the audience and thanked them for coming for the screening.

"For us it is about the place of films in the future. And screenings like this are very very important in showing people movies the way they were shot, made and wanted it to be shown. 'Interstellar' was never shown like this and we are excited to show like this to all of you," Nolan said.

Today evening, the trio - Nolan, Tacita Dean and Shivendra will be talking about "Reframing the Future of Film" at NCPA.&nbsp

Nolan takes centre stage as films screened in Mumbai

Christopher Nolan has recently watched legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray's "Pather Panchali" and the ace Hollywood director says he is willing to learn more about Indian cinema.

The 47-year-old director, who is in India on a three day trip along with visual artist&nbsp;Tacita Dean to promote the cause of film preservation and restoration, said his aim during his stay is to meet Indian filmmakers and get the better understanding of cinema culture here.

"I have had the pleasure of watching Mr Ray's 'Pather Panchali' recently, which I hadn't seen before. I think it is one of the best films ever made. It is an extraordinary piece of work. I am interested in learning more about Indian film industry and that is the reason why I came.

"Obviously, Tacita and I want to spread our message about reframing the feature films as broadly as possible. And India being the largest film industry in the world is an essential part of that. The other reason why I wanted to come here was from selfish point of view. I wanted to meet Indian filmmakers and learn more about India. I am looking forward to watching more Indian films in future," Nolan said in a group interview.

The director filmed a pivotal sequence of his 2012 film "The Dark Knight Rises" in Jodhpur and he says, "I would love to come back to shoot for longer".

Nolan, who shot his latest release "Dunkirk" on 65mm stock and has been vocal about his fondness for the film as a medium, said it is important to preserve the traditional format for future generation.

"The film culture is always developing in ways we can't predict. The importance of this discussion about films is about preserving it as an option for future filmmakers. We can't say who is going to use or who is not. But one of the things worth pointing out that films as an acquisition medium is still vastly superior to digital imaging technology. Even if you then put out a DCP (Digital Cinema Package)," he said.

The "Inception" helmer met members of the Indian film fraternity today and discussed the various ways of preserving and archiving film as a medium.

Nolan said, "Photochemicals films are a very important cultural medium and it needs to have a place in the future of imaging."

The director believes filmmaking is an emotional process and as he works towards preserving films, he wants people to not analyse cinema on "logical terms".

"Film is a wonderful analogy for how we perceive the world and our dreams. Film is a tool for exploring time and that has always influenced me. It is about the subconscious and the emotional reaction.

"With this conversation of reframing the future of films (we are) trying to get rid of this idea of analysing the film in purely engineering terms or logical terms. The reality is no cinema should be analysed that way. Be it casting or music, these are all emotional decision and they should be that way," he said.

Filmmaker Christopher Nolan will present the 70mm print of Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece "2001: A Space Odyssey" at the Cannes Film Festival to mark the movie's 50th anniversary.

The film will be introduced by Nolan on May 12 as part of the Cannes Classics programme and the screening will be attended by members of Kubrick's family, including his daughter Katharina Kubrick and his longtime producing partner and brother-in-law Jan Harlan, the festival organizers said in a statement.

The next day, Nolan will participate in a Cannes Masterclass during which he will discuss his award-winning filmography while shedding a light on his passion for the work of Kubrick.
For the first time since the original release, the 70mm print was struck from new printing elements made from the original camera negative, without any digital tricks, remastered effects or revisionist edits.

"One of my earliest memories of cinema is seeing Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey', in 70mm, at the Leicester Square Theatre in London with my father. The opportunity to be involved in recreating that experience for a new generation, and of introducing our new unrestored 70mm print of Kubrick's masterpiece in all its analog glory at the Festival de Cannes, is an honor and a privilege," Nolan said in the statement.

Nolan worked closely with the team at Warner Bros. Pictures throughout the mastering process.
"Stanley Kubrick in the Official Selection! It is a great honor for the Festival de Cannes to host the 50th-anniversary celebration of one of the most extraordinary films in the history of cinema. And to welcome to the Festival for the first time Christopher Nolan, whose presence creates a precious bond between past and present, without which cinema would have no history," Cannes chief Thierry Fr?Marx said.

Oscars 2018: The complete list of nominees

Hollywood is set for a real-life cliffhanger Sunday at the Oscars -- the race for best picture is coming down to the wire to cap an awards season overshadowed by scandal over sexual misconduct in showbiz.

Dark crime comedy &quot;Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri&quot; has begun to pull away in late betting for the industry&#39;s biggest prize, but Oscarologists believe fairy tale romance &quot;The Shape of Water&quot; and socially-conscious horror movie &quot;Get Out&quot; will make it a photo finish.&nbsp;

&quot;I don&#39;t remember a year with so much uncertainty. There are at least four strong possibilities to win,&quot; Variety&#39;s awards editor Tim Gray said, adding Christopher Nolan&#39;s sweeping war epic &quot;Dunkirk&quot; to the mix.

&quot;I&#39;m guessing that &#39;The Shape of Water&#39; will win, but that&#39;s just a guess.&quot;&nbsp;

The 90th Academy Awards -- hosted for the second straight year by late night funnyman Jimmy Kimmel -- will be beamed live around the world by ABC from Hollywood&#39;s Dolby Theatre.

The show caps a difficult few months during which the industry has declared war on the pervasive culture of sexual impropriety unearthed by the downfall of movie mogul and alleged serial sex attacker Harvey Weinstein.

With the #MeToo and Time&#39;s Up campaigns against sexual misconduct and gender inequality dominating the 2018 awards circuit, this year&#39;s Oscars gala is seen as an opportunity for Tinseltown to support female filmmaking.

Greta Gerwig is only the fifth woman in Oscars history to be nominated for best director, but faces tough competition from Guillermo Del Toro, the runaway favorite for &quot;The Shape of Water.&quot;

There was also the first nod in history for a female cinematographer, Rachel Morrison, who shot Dee Rees&#39;s racial drama &quot;Mudbound.&quot;

Avoiding another flub

The Time&#39;s Up initiative is not planning a coordinated protest on Sunday -- like the striking red carpet &quot;blackout&quot; at the Golden Globes.

But leaders of the movement told journalists there would be &quot;a moment that&#39;s been carved out&quot; during the ceremony.

&quot;It&#39;s really important that you know that Time&#39;s Up is not about the red carpet,&quot; said powerhouse Hollywood producer Shonda Rhimes (&quot;Grey&#39;s Anatomy,&quot; &quot;Scandal&quot;).

&quot;And those women you saw on the red carpet representing Time&#39;s Up are now off the red carpet working their butts off being activists.&quot;

In another nod to the women&#39;s movements, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has tapped past winners Jennifer Lawrence and Jodie Foster to present the best actress Oscar, according to Variety.

Traditionally, the previous year&#39;s best actor winner would present that statuette, but Casey Affleck, who triumphed in 2017 for &quot;Manchester by the Sea,&quot; withdrew under a cloud of sexual harassment accusations he denies.

One political statement on the red carpet may come in bright orange -- some A-listers will reportedly wear orange US flag pins in a call for tougher gun control.

Organizers are looking to rebound after last year&#39;s flubbed announcement by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway of the best picture winner -- the trophy was initially given to &quot;La La Land,&quot; when the actual winner was &quot;Moonlight.&quot;

In a surprise turn of events, Beatty and Dunaway have been tapped to present the same prize this time around, according to The Hollywood Reporter, although the Academy did not respond to AFP&#39;s request for confirmation.&nbsp;

McDormand, Oldman in pole position

&quot;The Shape of Water,&quot; a Cold War-set story of love between a mute cleaning woman and a mystery merman-like creature, tops the nominations with 13, although observers expect the spoils to be fairly evenly spread.&nbsp;

&quot;Dunkirk&quot; heads into Sunday&#39;s gala in second place with eight nods, while &quot;Three Billboards&quot; picked up seven.

Frances McDormand (&quot;Three Billboards&quot;) and British veteran Gary Oldman (&quot;Darkest Hour&quot;), who have dominated the awards season, are expected to bag the lead acting statuettes.

Disney-Pixar&#39;s &quot;Coco&quot; seems a near-sure bet to pick up the award for best animated film.

And &quot;A Fantastic Woman&quot; -- a love story from Chilean director Sebastian Lelio with a much-praised star turn from transgender actress Daniela Vega -- is tipped to win best foreign-language film honors.&nbsp;

The intermittent weekend rain is expected to taper off in time for Sunday&#39;s ceremony, but temperatures will be a bit cool as around 3,400 guests descend on Hollywood Boulevard.
