Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon join Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer'

Ace filmmaker Christopher Nolan recently heaped praises on Denis Villeneuve's 'Dune' and called it one of the greatest blends of VFX and cinematography he has ever seen.

The Hollywood Reporter obtained the recent podcast interview of Nolan where he talked about the mega-budget tent pole 'Dune' and appears like he too has identified himself as an ardent Denis Villeneuve and 'Dune' fan.

For the unversed, the 'Tenet' director sat down with 'Dune' director Villeneuve to discuss the making of the film for an episode of the Directors Cut Podcast, recorded after a screening at the DGA Theatre in Los Angeles.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, throughout their chat, Nolan was effusive with his praise of Villeneuve's handling of Frank Herbert's endlessly influential sci-fi classic.

"It's one of the most seamless marriages of live-action photography and computer-generated visual effects that I`ve seen. It`s very, very compelling at every turn," Nolan said.

He went on to say that he thinks this film is "going to introduce a whole new generation of fans to Dune who have never read the book and perhaps will go and read it now. I think it's an extraordinary piece of work. I've had the luxury of seeing it a couple of times now, and each time I watch it I discover new things, new details to the world. The way in which it`s made is absolutely for the big screen. It`s a real pleasure and a real gift to film fans everywhere -- and thank you very much for that, Denis."

Produced by Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros., 'Dune' is currently riding high at the box office. The recently released film starring Timothee Chalamet, and Zendaya among others in lead roles cover only the first half of Frank Herbert's book, however, and the director has been very public about his ambitions to complete the story with a carefully planned big-budget sequel.

Legendary and Warner Bros have yet to greenlight the sequel, though, awaiting a clearer indication of the first film`s success commercially, which seems to be a little complicated by the fact that Warners released the movie simultaneously over HBO Max, as it has with its entire 2021 theatrical film slate.

On a related note, Nolan and Villeneuve became public allies last year when they rubbed off on Warner Bros for its shock streaming decision.

During their DGA chat, Nolan was quick to query Villeneuve over his decision to split the book into two films, as per The Hollywood Reporter.

Villeneuve said, "It`s something I proposed to the studio right away because I was feeling that to try to put that huge story into one movie would be a mistake. It was not a discussion; they agreed spontaneously."But Villeneuve added that he had originally hoped to film both instalments of `Dune` back to back, or simultaneously, but the studio balked at the expense of the idea.

"I should say that you`re always as good as your last movie, and you bring that reputation to the table, and I think that Blade Runner 2049 just wasn`t a major blockbuster success, so they were a bit cold at the idea of investing in two movies right away," he added.

Nolan said he felt Villeneuve was being all too hard on himself, to which the 'Dune' director replied, "I think that was a negotiating tactic on the studios' part because I think Blade Runner is a very successful film and an incredible piece of work."

He added that he has now actually relieved that he didn`t attempt the enormous task of making two parts of `Dune` at once." I would have died! I'm so happy that we didn`t. I would not have had the stamina to do that. Frankly, the truth is that I`m grateful that it happened this way," he said.

The Hollywood Reporter informed Nolan was particularly curious how Villeneuve had approached the film`s computer graphics work, given how seamlessly CGI shots are integrated into the film`s cinematography."The same way that you do it, I think, I think you shoot as much as possible in real locations and you try to embrace reality.

There are some shots in truth that are pure CGI, but I tried to avoid those as much as possible," Villeneuve replied.
He continued, "The whole movie, to shoot with real environments, it`s all about light at the end of the day. I had a masterclass on how to light a shot on doing Blade Runner with Roger Deakins. Because Roger supervised all of the VFX with me, so I spent a year listening to him on every shot. I learned so much on how to work with VFX with Roger, and that helped me tremendously on how to direct the team here."The two filmmakers also spoke about the exquisite locations. Nolan instantly recognized one of Dune`s primary desert sites. "One of the most spectacular locations you used in the film is Wadi Rum in Jordan, which some of you may known from Lawrence of Arabia," he explained.

"A lot of films have shot in Wadi Rum since Lawrence, but for my money, this is the first time I`ve seen it used in as expressive a way. The sense of place is extraordinary," he added.Villeneuve also reminisced when he and his Director of Photography Greig Fraser were brainstorming the film, it was like a love letter to the big screen theatrical experience.

"The book was calling for that -- the landscape and the story of a boy who will slowly remove the burden of all his heritage and make peace with a side of his identity as he goes deeper and deeper into the landscape," he concluded.

'Dune' received an Eight-Minute standing ovation at Venice Film Festival Premiere. Denis Villeneuve received high praises for his breath-taking adaptation of the 1965 sci-fi classic.A mythic and emotionally charged hero's journey, 'Dune' tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people.

As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet`s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence - a commodity capable of unlocking humanity`s greatest potential--only those who can conquer their fear will survive.The film stars Oscar-nominated actors Timothee Chalamet, Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Jason Momoa and Javier Bardem.

Christopher Nolan casts The Dark Knight star Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer

Christopher Nolan is in talks with several major studios regarding his next film on J. Robert Oppenheimer and his involvement in developing the atom bomb during World War II.

It will be a return of sorts for Nolan to war films post ‘Dunkirk’ but only this time it will be set in America. His last film ‘Tenet’ released in theatres in the middle of the pandemic when moviegoers were not very comfortable with watching the film in the cinemas.&nbsp;

‘Tenet’ like many other Nolan films was with Warner Bros. but the filmmaker wants to try something different now as he was not happy with how WarnerMedia made the decision to release its entire slate of 2021 on HBO Max.&nbsp;

Christopher Nolan is thus in talks with several studios to get a first-look deal, but this project would not be part of that. In those discussions, Nolan made it clear that he was interested in some degree of theatrical exclusivity on his films.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-the-matrix-resurrections-trailer-keanu-reeves-returns-as-neo-priyanka-chopra-pens-emotional-note-411922" hreflang="en">'The Matrix: Resurrections' trailer: Keanu Reeves returns as Neo</a>

As for the film, J. Robert Oppenheimer is among those known as the father of the atom bomb and was the head of Los Alamos Laboratory where the bomb that ended WWII was developed. The news reflects yet another chapter for the sci-fi thriller, which was originally scheduled for theatrical release in July of 2020, prior to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Seeing its release date shift repeatedly, after theaters across the world shuttered, Tenet eventually debuted in 70 countries, including Canada, France, Japan, and the UK,&nbsp;in August.&nbsp;

Back in December, WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar announced that in response to the financial hit of the pandemic, all of HBO Max’s 2021 titles would be released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, stimulating the irk of many filmmakers, including Nolan.

“Some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio,” Nolan said in a statement, following the announcement, “and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service.”

Grossing nearly $58 million in North America, and over $363 million worldwide, Nolan’s&nbsp;Warner Bros&nbsp;feature centers on the Protagonist (John David Washington), a secret agent who learns to manipulate time, in order to prevent an attack from the future that would destroy his present world.

The film also stars, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Martin Donovan, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh.

Tenet has been nominated in two Oscars categories, including Best Feature in Visual Effects and Best Feature&nbsp;in Production Design.

After a much-delayed theatrical release, Christopher Nolan's mind-spinning film 'Tenet' is set for a digital release. The film will be launched on HBO via HBO Max on May 1, the streamers announced recently.

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan will be conferred with the 2021 FIAF Award by The International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), the organisation of film archives and museums from across the world, at a virtual ceremony scheduled to take place on March 19.

As per Variety, iconic filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan, who have been previous recipients, will give the award to Big B for his contribution to the preservation of and access to the world`s film heritage for the benefit of present and future generations.&nbsp;

At the opening ceremony of the 2018 Kolkata Film Festival, Bachchan had delivered an impassioned speech on film preservation, saying that most films of Indian filmmaking legends have "gone up in flames or have been discarded on the scrap heap."

"Very little of this great film heritage survives, and if we do not take urgent steps to save what remains, in another hundred years there will be no memory of these films and nothing left to celebrate," the actor had said.

Bachchan was nominated by the FIAF-affiliate Film Heritage Foundation, an Indian film archival organisation founded by filmmaker and archivist Shivendra Singh Dungarpur.&nbsp;

Dungarpur pointed out that India`s track record in film preservation is dismal. By 1950, India had lost almost 70 per cent of its films, and of the 1,338 silent films made in India, some 29 survive, many only in fragments. He said that Bachchan "constructively wielded his influence to amplify the cause on a war footing," in South Asia and that he was the unanimous choice of the 172 FIAF-affiliated archives for the award.

Scorsese also commented on Big B and said, "Amitabh Bachchan`s advocacy for preserving India`s film legacy has been exceptional."

Nolan, who is a staunch supporter of celluloid over digital, said, "As a past recipient of the FIAF Award, I know how imperative it is that representatives of the film industry around the world come together to ensure that we preserve our film heritage."

Congratulating Bachchan, Nolan said, "he has played an essential role in putting the cause of film preservation on the map in India and the subcontinent."

The FIAF Award was introduced in 2001 when it was presented to Scorsese for his film archival efforts. It has since recognised personalities from outside the archival scene who have worked to advocate the cause of film preservation.

Past winners of the award include Ingmar Bergman (2003), Mike Leigh (2005), Hou Hsiao-hsien (2006), Peter Bogdanovich (2007), Rithy Panh (2009), Agnes Varda (2013), Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (2016), Christopher Nolan (2017), Apichatpong Weerasethakul (2018), Jean-Luc Godard (2019), and Walter Salles (2020).&nbsp;

More than forty prominent UK film industry figures including `Tenet` director Christopher Nolan have written to UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak asking for more support for UK cinema, which they say is "standing on the edge of an abyss" as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The industry leaders, including Christopher Nolan, Steve McQueen, Ridley Scott, Jude Law and Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson, are among the ones calling for "targeted funding support to ensure that future generations can enjoy the magic of cinema".

The group said, "We recognise the support that government has already been able to provide"They continued, "But we fear that this will not be enough, with the challenges being most acute for those larger cinema operators who have not been able to access any tailored funding."

"These companies represent over 80 per cent of the market, in many ways constituting its `critical mass` and helping to drive the success of associated sectors such as film distribution and production to coalesce. Without them, the future of the entire UK film industry would look extremely precarious," the group further said.

The letter continues, "We very much hope that Government will respond to this call. UK cinema stands on the edge of an abyss. We urgently need targeted funding support to ensure that future generations can enjoy the magic of cinema."

The UK box office, like much of the global box office, has been decimated by COVID-19 closures. The local market experienced a 76 per cent drop in receipts to USD 454 million last year and most plexes and single cinemas remain shuttered with dozens of tent poles on ice.&nbsp;

Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ has been the talk of the town for a larger part of the year 2020 as his tentpole film was initially pushed due to the pandemic then it made its way to theatres in the US and other countries as and when theatres opened up. Now, ‘Tenet’ recently released in India as theatres opened up very recently in the South East Asian nation. The numbers weren’t great at the box office considering how much money Nolan raises with his films and so he took on with the studio Warner Bros that has decided to release all its films in 2021 in theatres as well as OTT partner HBO Max on the same date.&nbsp;

'Wonder Woman 1984' director Patty Jenkins has opened up about the film's digital release on HBO Max prior to its theatrical release. The film, starring Gal Gadot in the lead, will release on streaming platform before its selective theatrical release on December 25.&nbsp;

The film's release has faced lot of roadblocks this year due to the pandemic. It was scheduled to release earlier this year but the release date had to be changed multiple times before Warner Bros decided for a Christmas release.&nbsp;

The studio, in fact, created quite a buzz a few days back with its decision to simultaneously release all its 2021 films on streaming platforms and theatres. Filmmaker Christopher Nolan, who had been a frequent collaborator with the Studio, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-christopher-nolan-disappointed-with-warner-bros-over-hbo-max-deal-348247">expressed displeasure over the move.&nbsp;</a>

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan said, "Some of our industry's biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service," Nolan said.

Reacting to Nolan's statement, Jenkins said, "I agree with Chris. I don't think it's great for the future of filmmaking when Covid has passed." Jenkins was speaking to CNN and added, "However, our film was different. It was presented in a very different way, which is that we are at the height of the pandemic right now and people are really suffering and struggling and the choices are to sit on our film and wait or to release it."

Jenkins admitted she would like more people to watch her film in the theatre, but considering the current situation- she was happy that the film was finally releasing.&nbsp;

"In this case, at this moment in time only, I really was excited about this idea," Jenkins explained. "The number one reason I'm a filmmaker is to try share experiences with mankind and have the communal moment of sharing something. Yes, I loved it when it happens in theaters, but this year I'm so touched and moved that it's going to happen in people's homes when they can't go places and still happen in theaters where they can. There's something sort of wonderful about just saying now is the time to release the movie, regardless of all of those other things. I'm with Chris, I'm going to go right back to being a partner to the theatrical business. That's what I make films for."

Trade website Box Office India had earlier said certain IMAX screenings even managed full capacity in some of these theatres with metros such as Mumbai and Bengaluru notching up the best response. Termed as the litmus test for film business in India, ‘Tenet’ sets the stage for the other big Hollywood release later this month, ‘Wonder Woman 1984’. Meanwhile, Gautam Dutta, CEO, PVR Cinemas had said on the film’s opening, “Big films like Tenet will increase occupancy and garner footfalls and would further provide a great out-of-home experience for our patrons who were forced to stay in the confines of their homes for months.”

'Tenet' box office: Christopher Nolan's film crosses Rs 4 crore mark in first weekend

Christopher Nolan, whose latest film ‘Tenet’ was a Warner Bros. production, has expressed dissatisfaction over <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-warner-bros-to-release-all-upcoming-2021-films-on-streamer-as-well-as-theatres-347345">studio’s decision to release its entire 2021 theatrical slate simultaneously on the HBO Max streaming service</a>

In an interview with ET, Nolan said, “There’s such controversy around it because they didn’t tell anyone,”. “It’s very, very, very, very messy. A real bait and switch. Yeah, it’s sort of not how you treat filmmakers and stars and people who, these guys have given a lot for these projects. They deserved to be consulted and spoken to about what was going to happen to their work.”

‘Tenet’ was the last major movie to launch in movie theatres. It topped $300 million internationally with people still reluctant to come to cinemas. Nolan’s resume at Warner Bros. includes ‘Dunkirk,’ ‘The Dark Knight trilogy’, ‘Inception’ and ‘Interstellar.’

The studio recently announced that 17 of its 2021 titles — including the fourth ‘Matrix,’ ‘The Suicide Squad,’ ‘Godzilla v. Kong,’ ‘Dune’ and ‘In the Heights’ — would debut on HBO Max immediately upon their theatrical release as parent WarnerMedia faces the prospect of moviegoers continuing to shun theatres. Nolan said his reaction was “disbelief….especially the way in which they did.”

“In 2021, they’ve got some of the top filmmakers in the world, they’ve got some of the biggest stars in the world who worked for years in some cases on these projects very close to their hearts that are meant to be big-screen experiences,” he added. “They’re meant to be out there for the widest possible audiences… and now they’re being used as a loss-leader for the streaming service — for the fledgeling streaming service — without any consultation.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to exhibitors around the world consider alternatives to release their films. While studios are holding back the release of major titles, nobody knows when the full functionality of cinema-hall would resume.&nbsp;

Akshay Kumar is a 'proud son-in-law ' as Christopher Nolan pens note for Dimple Kapadia

Filmmaker Christopher Nolan is enchanted by India as he says the country is "unbelievably visual" with an "extraordinary history" that made it a suitable location for filming his new feature 'Tenet'.

Billed as a globetrotting game of international espionage with a time-bending element at the centre, the film features John David Washington in the lead alongside Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Kenneth Branagh, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Michael Caine and Clemence Poesy.

Nolan and his cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot the movie in countries like Denmark, Estonia, Italy, Norway, the UK and the US as well as India, where the crew came down for a five-day shoot in Mumbai last September.

The filmmaker, who previously shot a small sequence of his 2012 movie 'The Dark Knight Rises'&nbsp;in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, said he chose Mumbai as it was one of the "most extraordinary looking cities in the world".

"Every time I go to India, I''m struck by how unbelievably visual the place is. I had shot a couple of days in Jodhpur on 'The Dark Knight Rises'&nbsp;and always wanted to go back and shoot a more substantial sequence, and I had the opportunity to do that on 'Tenet'," Nolan said in an exclusive transcript shared with PTI by Warner Bros.

"We shot in Mumbai, which is just one of the most extraordinary looking cities in the world in terms of its architecture, the amazing people and the abundance of life on the streets there. It''s a really remarkable place with this extraordinary history, so, to be able to take the audience there, it seemed a very exciting setting," he added.

In Mumbai, the movie was shot in areas like Breach Candy Hospital, Cafe Mondegar, Colaba Causeway, Colaba Market, Gateway of India, Grant Road, Royal Bombay Yacht Club, and the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.
Nolan said that he had a wonderful time collaborating with local crews in pulling off some amazing shots.

"They have such a wonderful love of film and a highly developed film industry, it was really fun to collaborate with the local crews and learn about how they make films and cooperate with them in pulling off some remarkable things, including some of the first-ever aerial shots of Mumbai in a film.

"There are some really interesting things we were able to capture, shooting for a relatively short space of time in challenging conditions because it was monsoon season, so when it rained it really rained. But it was such a wonderfully atmospheric place to be," the 50-year-old filmmaker added.

Nolan also opened up about roping in a star-studded international cast for the project as he wanted the movie to transcend national boundaries.

"It's not about America per se, it's about the survival of the entire human race. I wanted the stakes to be apparent and apparent in the breadth of nationalities. It really is the notion of using the diversity of the cast to express that the threat is a threat to the entire world.

"So from Rob Pattinson playing an Englishman, to Kenneth Branagh playing a Russian, to Elizabeth Debicki playing an Englishwoman to Dimple Kapadia playing an Indian woman... We were really trying to bring in a lot of different national identities to play," the filmmaker said.

In previous interviews, Nolan has talked about how he was always fascinated by spy movies, especially the James Bond franchise, but with 'Tenet', he wanted to do something different.

"I've always wanted to take on a spy film, but I've also known that I would never be that interested in just making the kind of spy film that I had grown up watching."

"What I really wanted to do was find a way to re-energise it for the audience -- to give them a reason to look in a fresh way, in a new way, at some of the tropes of the genre, which was very much what we did with the heist genre in Inception, dealing with the world of dreams."

The filmmaker said he likes to challenge the conventions of a particular genre and present them in a new way to the audiences.

"You get to maximise your input from the audience in a way - they come with an expectation about a particular genre, and you get the benefit of that in terms of propelling the story forward.

"You also get the benefit of that in terms of using those conventions to ground the audience in a set of science fiction ideas that might otherwise be far too abstract to get ahold of in a short space of time," he added.

Another aspect of filmmaking that has made Nolan a god-like figure to many cinephiles is his penchant for fiddling with time. Right from his breakout movie 'Memento'&nbsp;in 2000 and then films like 'Inception'&nbsp;(2010), 'Interstellar'&nbsp;(2014) and 'Dunkirk'&nbsp;(2017), time is a common thread that binds them together.

His answer to this observation is simple -- he is "fascinated" by time.

"In my work, I've always felt an interesting relationship between the process of watching a film and how films work, and the notion of time inside them and how they relate to time.

"So, for me, having narratives that in some way explore the relationship between the way we perceive time in everyday life and the way we perceive time in a movie theatres and watching a film… that's always seemed an interesting place to play around," Nolan said.

The filmmaker said Tenet&nbsp;will feel like a "kind of apotheosis" of some of the ideas he has explored in his movies.

"There is a sense in which the story of 'Tenet' makes literal, makes a physical reality of the story - things that I was doing structurally or metaphorically in earlier movies," Nolan added.

The Warner Bros film is slated to be released in Indian theatres on December 4 in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Robert Pattinson is all praises for his 'Tenet' director Christopher Nolan. Pattinson, who features in a prominent character in the film, has termed Nolan's latest as complex and ambitious.&nbsp;

Pattinson says 'Tenet' shows the true possibilities of cinema.&nbsp;

"It`s incredibly ambitious and incredibly complex. I mean no one makes movies like Chris in the first place, and this is kind of Chris Nolan on steroids with all of the new technology within the IMAX cameras, which were designed especially for this movie. I can`t really imagine not seeing it in a theatre," Pattinson said to a news agency.&nbsp;

Tenet was originally scheduled to release in July but was postponed several times over the course of the year due to the ongoing pandemic. Even though the film faced a lot of delays, &nbsp;Nolan was always sure about releasing the film on big screen.

Pattinson, too, insists 'Tenet' must be watched on the big screen.

"With people who haven`t had the ability to go to the cinemas for months, having this to look forward to will be a really great thing. I think it really shows what is possible in cinema. I mean Chris really, really wants to push the limits of what you can do on film with almost zero visual effects. It`s a very immersive experience and nothing really captures that more than seeing it on the biggest possible screen," he added.

Dubbed as "an action epic evolving from the world of international espionage", Nolan`s new film takes one on a thrilling time-bending mission with two secret agents, essayed by Pattinson and John David Washington.

The Warner Bros. Pictures project also features Bollywood`s Dimple Kapadia, along with Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branagh, Michael Caine, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Clemence Poesy. The film has been shot across seven countries -- India, the US, the UK, Denmark, Estonia, Italy, and Norway.

Talking about the cast, Pattinson said: "It`s just the most incredible cast, and with such a complex script it was just lovely to know that everyone was on the same page. I had never met John David (Washington) before and I luckily got on so well with him, which is great considering the majority of my scenes were with him and we were working so closely together for however many months it was. It`s probably one of the best friendships I have made while doing a movie."

The film is scheduled to release in India on December 4, in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages.

Robert Pattinson describes 'Tenet' as Christopher Nolan on steroids

'Tenet'&nbsp;star John David Washington is all in praise for Christopher Nolan as he believed his collaboration with the ace filmmaker has helped him improve his own craft.

Washington, formerly a professional football player and popular for movies such as Spike Lee's "BlackKklansman" and "Monster", plays the main lead in Nolan's new movie. Billed as a globetrotting game of international espionage with a time-bending element at the centre, the Warner Bros film also features Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine, Kenneth Branagh, Aaron Taylor Johnson and Clemence Poesy.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/in-pics-christopher-nolans-tenet-and-the-indian-connection-323650">In pics: Christopher Nolan's 'Tenet' and the Indian connection</a>

Washington said Nolan is like a "hero" to him and when the opportunity to work with the director came up, he didn't hesitate to say yes to it. "Working with a hero of mine brought me great excitement at the prospect, and there was no telling what he had in mind for me. And so when I finally got to read the script, it is such an incredible, unique, original idea, it got me even more excited about how we're going to do this,&nbsp;how we're going to bring this to life.

"And step-by-step we were doing it. Day by day, week by week, we were getting it done, and it was a great experience," the 36-year-old actor said in an exclusive transcript shared with PTI by Warner Bros. Washington hailed Nolan as "an actor's director" as he was quite receptive of the actor's contributions.

"He exceeded my expectations. I can't speak for everybody else, but in my experience, Chris is an actor's director. He fully embraced and championed my performance and spontaneity, and my contributions, using my instincts and what I felt like I could bring to the table. He never wanted things the same way. He would say to me sometimes? and it would blow my mind -- 'I'll work off of you'. If you hear Christopher Nolan and (cinematographer) Hoyte Van Hoytema say, 'No, no, no. You do it, and I'll work off of you,' that's something you don't expect, given their histories and seeing their catalogue of films."

Washington said he learnt a lot from Nolan and that will come handy in future. "Seeing these legends, these people at the top of their game, wanted me to dictate certain thing.&nbsp;It was incredible. They gave me great confidence because of moments like that. "It gave me great joy and a rediscovery of my artistry and what I believe I can do now after something like this. I know so much more about the process of it now and I attribute that to Christopher Nolan," the actor added.

Washington said 'Tenet'&nbsp;was also special because unlike many big-budget sci-fi movies, the film didn't rely much on special effects. "As an actor, when you can step into space, everything feels alive and in play. And it has to be created that way. "I mean, the leader has to create that environment for this to happen, and then, if you've done your research and you're fully invested, it's up to you to gather those clues, gather those discoveries and put them in the soup and make it something unimaginable, something that you can only create when you're in those situations. And Chris provided that for us," the actor said.

Washington is equally in awe of his co-actors. "It was a dream cast as well. I mean everybody was brilliant. It's interesting cause everybody has their own style, right? So sometimes it can take time to adjust to people's style and maybe the conditions weren't ideal all the time. And having to work through some of these things, nobody complained, and it was seamless. "I love the way Robert works. Sometimes we wouldn't overly talk about what we were doing. We discovered things and let the elements dictate our attitude, our motivation at the time, and I think that worked great," he added.

You do it, and I'll work off of you,' that's something you don't expect, given their histories and seeing their catalogue of films." Washington said he learnt a lot from Nolan and that will come handy in future. "Seeing these legends, these people at the top of their game, wanted me to dictate certain thing. It was incredible. They gave me great confidence because of moments like that. "It gave me great joy and a rediscovery of my artistry and what I believe I can do now after something like this. I know so much more about the process of it now and I attribute that to Christopher Nolan," the actor added. Washington said 'Tenet' was also special because unlike many big-budget sci-fi movies, the film didn't rely much on special effects. The Warner Bros film is slated to be released in Indian theatres on December 4 in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

'Tenet': Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi thriller gets a release date in India

Filmmaker Christopher Nolan has said he is happy with the worldwide gross collections of his latest feature Tenet but has cautioned that Hollywood studios are “drawing the wrong conclusions” from it.

Nolan’s Tenet was the first big-budget Hollywood feature to go for a theatrical release since the novel coronavirus pandemic shut down the cinemas worldwide in March.

The spy thriller, which features an ensemble cast of John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh, saw a staggered release worldwide wherever the cinemas started to open in August.

The film has grossed nearly USD 350 million globally in two months, kick-starting a debate about whether it is a disappointing or decent figure during the ongoing health crisis.

During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Nolan said he is “thrilled” by the film’s performance at the box office.

“Warner Bros released Tenet and I’m thrilled that it has made almost USD 350 million,” Nolan said. The director, however, added he is concerned that other studios weren’t as impressed by the figure.

“I am worried that the studios are drawing the wrong conclusions from our release — that rather than looking at where the film has worked well and how that can provide them with much needed revenue, they’re looking at where it hasn’t lived up to pre-COVID expectations and will start using that as an excuse to make exhibition take all the losses from the pandemic instead of getting in the game and adapting — or rebuilding our business, in other words,” Nolan said.

“Long term, moviegoing is a part of life, like restaurants and everything else. But right now, everybody has to adapt to a new reality,” he added.

Christopher Nolan: Worried about studios drawing wrong conclusions from Tenet’s box office collection

Christopher Nolan`s 'Tenet' has topped $280 million worldwide, dominating a mild US box office with $3.4 million at 2,850 locations in its fourth weekend to go past $41 million in four weeks.

The Warner Bros. tentpole, which carries a hefty $200 million price tag, took in a weekend total of $19.2 million worldwide in 58 markets. The US posting the top number with a 26% decline, followed by Japan with $3 million in its second weekend and a 30% decline.

'Tenet' is the first major studio release to launch during the pandemic, and its small-ish numbers underline the industry`s challenge of attracting customers amid a health crisis. Disney`s "Mulan"- which isn`t getting a theatrical release in the U.S. -- grossed $3.4 million in 20 markets to lift it to $64 million world wide. Its fifth weekend of 'The New Mutants' took in $2.5 million worldwide, including $1.1 million in the US.

The estimates were released three days after Disney postponed the release of a trio of fall blockbusters -- Marvel`s 'Black Widow,' Steven Spielberg`s 'West Side Story' and Kenneth Branagh`s 'Death on the Nile' -- by several months. Those delays were the latest in a long line of titles pushed out of the summer and fall due to coronavirus.

Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at Box Office Pro, said it`s no surprise that the U.S. moviegoing business is subdued amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"This weekend is continuing what`s now expected to become a trend of quieter weekends at the domestic box office in the early autumn weeks following numerous release delays since `Tenet` opened," he added. "It`s another good news, bad news scenario as `Tenet` itself and other films are displaying stronger legs than typically seen in pre-pandemic times, but the volume of total business in the market is lacking due to modest consumer awareness, the absence of four-quad films, and no promotional engine usually driven by the Los Angeles and New York markets."

Currently, about 75% of U.S. markets are open but the key Los Angeles and New York markets remain closed along with most of the rest of California, North Carolina, Michigan, New Mexico, Seattle-Tacoma and Portland. Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with Comscore, estimated that only 58% of theaters are currently open in North America.

"The marketplace is as expected sleepy and uncertain," he added. "However, there is at least some encouraging news in the fact that where people have the option, film fans are heading to the movie theater while others are seeking out the big screen experience even in neighboring cities if their local multiplex is unavailable."

Batman: Warner Bros., release BTS film on Christopher Nolan's 'Dark Knight' trilogy

People who closely follow box office earnings have noticed a surprising lack of transparency surrounding ticket sales for 'Tenet,' the $200 million-budgeted sci-fi epic from director Christopher Nolan that released last weekend in U.S. theaters.
Since 'Tenet' premiered, Warner Bros., the studio behind the film, has parceled out carefully selected breadcrumbs of data to reporters and rival studios. Traditionally, studios share box office information on a daily basis. That`s not the case with 'Tenet.'

Though it started playing in theaters on Thursday, Sept. 3, Warner Bros. waited until Sunday, Sept. 6 to officially announce opening weekend grosses. 'Tenet' earned $20 million over the long weekend, a middling result for a film of its size.

Industry observers presumed that Warner Bros. wanted initial box office receipts for 'Tenet' to look as robust as possible -- and waiting until Sunday for the full weekend figure would make earnings sound stronger than they might if the studio had dribbled out daily numbers.

The studio, however, was concerned that reporters and rivals would misinterpret or unfairly analyze the results -- leading to headlines that may incorrectly label 'Tenet`s' debut as a flop. Warner Bros. urged journalists to provide context by noting that ticket sales would automatically be lower than normal given the fact that theaters in major markets like New York and Los Angeles aren`t open and cinemas that have reopened have done so at reduced capacity. With those caveats in mind, Warner Bros. was never banking on a splashy opening weekend and instead hoped 'Tenet' would play in theaters for months without much in the way of competition.

Box office reports are one of the most public-facing activities that studios undergo. A hit opening weekend allows them to trumpet the good news in advertisements and through internal communications. But there`s a downside to those bragging rights. It also forces studios to own their mistakes -- a miss is a miss, after all. With streaming rivals such as Netflix and Amazon keeping a tight grip on the number of times films are watched and refusing to reveal box office data about their films, more traditional studios have grown frustrated. Some studio executives have even publicly carped about the need to report grosses, suggesting they`d rather forgo the process all together.

Though it is unusual for a major studio like Warner Bros. to shield grosses for perhaps the buzziest movie of the year, other Hollywood players had given the company a pass for opening weekend because 'Tenet' was the first significant movie to debut since coronavirus struck. Rival studios are closely watching the Nolan film as a test to see if people would go to the movies during the pandemic. The results, in effect, would help Hollywood decide whether or not to continue releasing big-budgeted tentpoles in the middle of a global health crisis.

Numerous insiders at rival studios emphasized that they want Warner Bros. and 'Tenet' to succeed, citing the aphorism that rising tides lift all boats. But given the importance of the movie theater business, Hollywood executives at other studios have privately complained about the lack of transparency.

In normal times, executives that are involved in distributing films get access to grosses by the hour. Studios work with the research company Rentrak and its parent corporation Comscore to report daily numbers and publish box office charts each weekend that are widely distributed across the entertainment industry. Studios pay a lot of money to get down-to-the-minute updates, with the agreement that rivals have access to info from other distributors.

According to individuals familiar with the situation, Rentrak had to get permission from major studio heads before concealing daily numbers for 'Tenet.' Though executives were initially reluctant, they ultimately agreed for the first weekend as a courtesy, believing that Warner Bros. was taking a bold bet in testing the waters and needed their support.

But as 'Tenet' continues into its second weekend in theaters, there has still been a dearth of information regarding box office data. The studio has yet to report daily figures, and is expected to wait until this Sunday to divulge ticket sales.
Warner Bros. and Comscore declined to comment on this report. However, studio sources argue they aren`t obligated to share numbers with anyone else and stress that there`s no precedent for releasing a movie in a pandemic.

Comparing 'Tenet' to any other movie, one source said, is "apples and kumquats." By distributing numbers in the traditional fashion, anyone on the outside could jump to conclusions and categorize "Tenet" has a financial disaster. They argue that there`s no difference between reporting numbers on Friday afternoon or Sunday morning.
Sources at other studios pointed out that some cinema owners, particularly those with drive-in locations, don`t report weekend earnings to studios until Sunday. While normally that wouldn`t make a notable dent in a final tally, drive-ins have become popular during the pandemic.

Adding to anxieties for Hollywood is the concern that other studios might make similar agreements to conceal grosses for upcoming releases -- pushing box office revenues behind a curtain of inscrutability. Sony Pictures is already following suit, waiting until the end of this weekend to share sales for its romantic comedy 'The Broken Hearts Gallery.'
That could signal that Warner Bros. decision to withhold information and tightly control its box office reporting may no longer be the exception to the rule. It could signal a new precedent for media companies always eager to avoid scrutiny.

Warner Bros. won't share 'Tenet' box office data, angering rival studios

After months of delays, Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic 'Tenet'&nbsp;finally arrived in the US&nbsp;theaters and generated $20.2 million over Labor Day weekend. Ticket sales, though difficult to dissect given the uncharted waters of the coronavirus era, are roughly in line with expectations for a new release during a pandemic.

The espionage thriller is already nearing the $150 million mark globally, thanks to a stronger showing at the international box office. Overseas, 'Tenet'&nbsp;earned another $78.3 million this weekend, bringing its worldwide haul to $146.2 million.

Warner Bros., in a note Sunday afternoon to press, said the studio was 'very pleased'&nbsp;with initial results, stressing that the rollout of 'Tenet' will be 'a marathon not a sprint'&nbsp;— meaning it doesn’t need splashy inaugural weekend grosses to justify its release.

“There is literally no context in which to compare the results of a film opening during a pandemic with any other circumstance,” the studio said. “We are in unprecedented territory, so any comparisons to the pre-COVID world would be inequitable and baseless.”

The domestic debut for Nolan’s latest includes ticket sales from preview screenings that started on Monday in the US&nbsp;and Canada. In pre-coronavirus times, “Tenet” would have seen much more substantial opening weekend figures. However, it’s launching in a vastly different environment since numerous theaters in the country are out of operation.

“With a significant number of key US&nbsp;states and cities still closed, this is a fair opening,” said David A. Gross, a box office analyst at FranchiseRe. “Business in the US&nbsp;is improving, but large numbers of moviegoers are not back yet. For now, this is as good as it gets.”

'Tenet' was able to play in about 2,800 cinemas across the country, a smaller footprint than normal for a wide release of this size. But Warner Bros., the studio behind the twisty thriller, is banking on it being enough to rationalize unspooling the mega-budgeted film after months of delays.

Currently, about 65-70% of multiplexes in the U.S. have reopened, though influential markets like New York City, Los Angeles, Seattle and San Francisco are still off limits. That likely shaved millions of dollars off of “Tenet’s” grosses.

Drive-in theaters have been a boon for cities where indoor cinemas can’t reopen yet. However, Warner Bros. issued guidelines that restricted the areas where “Tenet” can play outdoors.

They mandated that the film can only screen at drive-in theaters if indoor venues in that particular city are open. That means drive-ins in Los Angeles and San Francisco, both of which have been doing robust ticket sales during the pandemic, didn’t have access to one of the buzziest titles of the year.

“Tenet” is the first major blockbuster to debut in the US&nbsp;after the pandemic forced theaters to close in March. It was originally slated to bow in July but was delayed multiple times as cases of the virus continued to surge. While other anticipated titles — like “Fast and Furious” entry “F9” and Marvel’s “Black Widow” — pushed their openings into late 2020 or 2021, “Tenet” remained fluid with the hopes of welcoming audiences back after prolonged shutdowns.

Warner Bros. domestic distribution chief Jeff Goldstein said the studio opted to forge ahead with the release of “Tenet” given its appeal to overseas audiences.

“As a strategy, we looked at this movie and said [ticket sales will be] two-thirds international and one-third domestic,” he said. “Clearly the rest of the world was in a better place in terms of figuring out how to move forward.”

Though “Tenet” started playing in theaters on Thursday, Warner Bros. opted not to report grosses until Sunday. Hollywood has been looking to 'Tenet'&nbsp;as an indicator of the viability of the movie theater business during a global health crisis. Many exhibitors reopened their cinemas in time to screen 'Tenet',and they are banking on pent-up demand to see a movie on the big screen for the first time in months.

Ticket buyers who ventured out to see 'Tenet'&nbsp;in theatres opted to see it in the best quality possible. Imax screens accounted for $11.1 million of global sales this weekend.

China, where 'Tenet'&nbsp;premiered on Friday, pulled in more than $8 million in ticket sales on opening day and $30 million over the weekend. When it comes to restarting business, the country is well ahead of the U.S. Already, China has seen notable success with war epic 'The Eight Hundred', which has grossed over $300 million to date.

“Though the box office trajectory in North America will look quite different for ‘Tenet’ than in the international marketplace, the film may actually see its fortunes rise in the coming weeks as more and more cities open their multiplex doors,” said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst with Comscore.

The hope, among studios and theater owners alike, is that extensive safety measures will make audiences feel more comfortable returning to indoor spaces in the coming weeks.

'Tenet',&nbsp;led by John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, cost $200 million to make — and many millions more to globally promote. That means the time-bending thriller needs to pull in robust ticket sales to turn a profit. Audiences gave the film a 'B' CinemaScore, lower than usual for Nolan’s filmography.

But without much competition from other Hollywood movies, Warner Bros. is optimistic that 'Tenet' will play in theaters for months to come.

When it comes to competition, 'Tenet'&nbsp;biggest rival may be coming from the small screen. 'Mulan', Disney’s reimagining of 1998 cartoon, is skipping U.S. theaters and launching this weekend on Disney Plus. The family movie is available to rent on the studio’s streaming service for $30.

In areas where Disney Plus is not available, 'Mulan'&nbsp;is opening on the big screen. The fantasy epic — directed by Niki Caro and starring Liu Yifei — drew $5.9 million from nine international markets, including Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. 'Mulan'&nbsp;opens in China and Russia next weekend.

In weeks since theaters have started to resume business, a handful of new releases, such as 'The New Mutants,'&nbsp;Russell Crowe’s road-rage thriller 'Unhinged'&nbsp;and 'The Personal History of David Copperfield' starring Dev Patel, have debuted.

Disney and 20th Century’s 'The New Mutants'&nbsp;is aiming to generate $3.5 million through Labor Day, taking its North American bounty to $12.3 million. Searchlight’s 'David Copperfield'&nbsp;is expected to pull in $470,000 from 1,550 theaters over the four-day holiday weekend. That should push its domestic tally to $1.13 million through Monday.

'Unhinged',&nbsp;in its third weekend in theaters, made $655,000 on Saturday and looks to collect $1.67 million over the weekend. Through Monday, the movie is projecting $11.67 million total.

It’s unclear if the numbers for 'Tenet'&nbsp;will justify moving forward with other blockbusters until coronavirus gets under control in the US&nbsp;or a vaccine is developed.

For now, 'Wonder Woman 1984', also from Warner Bros., is the next film gearing up to hit the big screen.The comic book adventure is expected to touch down in the US&nbsp;on Oct. 2.

After months of delays, Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic 'Tenet' finally arrived in the US theaters and generated $20.2 million over Labor Day weekend. Ticket sales, though difficult to dissect given the uncharted waters of the coronavirus era, are roughly in line with expectations for a new release during a pandemic.
