Premier League: Chelsea's Christopher Nkunku to miss up to four months with knee surgery

Juventus will not play in Europe next season after being banned over breaches of UEFA's Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play rules, while Premier League side Chelsea will pay 10 million euros for submitting incomplete financial information, Europe's soccer governing body said on Friday.

The UEFA Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) opened a formal investigation into Juventus in December, months after the Italian side was among eight clubs that reached a settlement with UEFA for failing to comply with break-even requirements.

In a statement on Friday, European soccer's governing body said it would "impose an additional financial contribution of 20 million euros on the club.

Juventus, who qualified for the Conference League playoff round after finishing seventh in Serie A last term, said they had waived the right to appeal that decision but maintained their innocence.

"We do not share the interpretation that has been given of our defense, and we remain firmly convinced of the legitimacy of our actions and the validity of our arguments.

However, we have decided not to appeal this judgment," Juventus Chairman Gianluca Ferrero said.

Ferrero added that Juventus' decision not to appeal was in line with the policy they employed during a settlement with Italy's soccer federation (FIGC) in May, where they opted to pay a fine of 718,000 euros and not challenge a 10-point penalty.

"As in that case, we prefer to put an end to the period of uncertainty and ensure full visibility and certainty to our internal and external stakeholders about the club's participation in future international competitions," Ferrero said.

"Lodging an appeal, possibly to other levels of judgement, with uncertain outcomes and timing, would increase the uncertainty with respect to our eventual participation in the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League."

The Conference League qualifying rounds for the 2023-24 season started earlier this month.

<h2>CHELSEA SETTLEMENT</h2>

UEFA also reached a settlement with Chelsea over the submission of incomplete financial information, related to "historical transactions" between 2012-19 - prior to the London club's acquisition by the Boehly-Clearlake consortium in 2022.

Chelsea, who finished 12th in the Premier League following a chaotic campaign, will not be competing in Europe in 2023-24.

"The last few seasons with Chelsea were difficult," Pulisic told a press conference after being unveiled by Milan. "For whatever reason, I wasn’t getting the opportunities I wanted at my previous club, but I now have a great opportunity to reach the highest level that I can..."

Pulisic will wear the number 11 shirt, worn by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and acknowledged the weight of responsibility that comes with it following the Swede's retirement.

"I’m not trying to fill his shoes, he’s a legend, but it was a fresh beginning and a number that I liked," Pulisic said. "There are so many big names you can go through, but I am a bit younger, so watched the likes of Kaka and Ibrahimovic, plus the players who are here now."

He becomes the second player to leave Chelsea for Milan in this transfer window after midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

New Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is confident the team will only get better as he beds in his ideas and hopes to deliver quickly. The Argentine was speaking to media on Friday as the west London club presented him at a press conference.

Chelsea appointed Pochettino at the end of May after finishing 12th in the Premier League following a chaotic campaign, during which Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard had spells in charge of the side.

The 51-year-old Pochettino, who has signed a two-year contract with the option of a further year, started work on July 1 and will hope to change Chelsea's fortunes after their worst finish since 1994.

"My target is to win, my aim is to win," the former Tottenham Hotspur and Paris St Germain coach told reporters at Stamford Bridge. "Football is about today, yesterday. You cannot talk too much long term. We cannot tell people we need six months to create because it seems not good. We need to create the belief from the beginning."

"I think we are going to have a squad that can deliver in the short term and give what we expect and from day one we need to think to win. Then if we don't win, maybe if little by little we need more time to develop our idea, maybe it is possible."

After being roped in by Manchester United in the transfer window, on Wednesday (July 05),&nbsp;Mason Mount revealed that he had a fair idea, over the last few months&nbsp;that he wasn't in the scheme of things for Chelsea moving forward; prompting him to make a switch. The 24-year-old midfielder made as many as 279 appearances for Chelsea, where he found the back of the net on 58 occasions and contributed with 53 assists. In addition, the youngster was the club's&nbsp;Player of the Year for both the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.

Shedding light on his decision to move from Chelsea to Man United, Mount explained while speaking to MUTV, "I think, over the last several months, it became clear that I wasn't in the plans moving forward [at Chelsea] and, once I knew that United was involved, my decision was made up."

Further, Mount opened up on joining the Red Devils. "It’s a massive club with huge, iconic players that have played here. I wanted to be a part of that from the beginning. And obviously getting in early, ready for pre-season to start, was a main objective of mine as well."

On being presented with jersey number seven, Mount said, "So many iconic players [have played for United]. They've played for this club and, watching them as a youngster and also being a fan of theirs, it's very special to obviously now be here. This is what I worked a long, long time for as a little kid, for this moment here, and, going forward into the future, it's so exciting for myself."

Reacting to his signing, Mount agreed that 'it's not easy to leave the club where you grew' but was confident of exciting future ahead.

"It's never easy leaving the club where you grew up, but Manchester United will provide an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career," Mount said in a statement.

"Everyone can see that the club has made big steps forward under Erik ten Hag. Having met with the manager and discussed his plans, I couldn't be more excited for the seasons ahead, and am ready for the hard work expected here," he added.

Former Spain, Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas announced his retirement on Saturday, bringing the curtain down on an illustrious 20-year playing career as he hangs up his boots to take up coaching at Como.

Fabregas announced himself on the scene when he made his Arsenal debut aged 16 after he was signed from Barca, taking over the midfield mantle from Frenchman Patrick Vieira and becoming one of the Premier League's greatest playmakers.

After eight seasons at Arsenal, where he won the FA Cup in 2005, he moved back to his boyhood club Barcelona for three years and won six trophies. He then moved back to London, this time with Chelsea where he won two Premier League titles and his second FA Cup.

Arsenal on Wednesday signed German attacking midfielder Kai Havertz from Chelsea on a "long-term contract". Neither club disclosed a fee but British media said Arsenal were paying Chelsea 65 million pounds or 75 million euros. &nbsp;He is Arsenal's first signing of the summer but the British press reported the club had agreed a 105-million-pound fee for West Ham's England midfielder Declan Rice.

Havertz joined Chelsea in 2020 from Bayer Leverkusen. He made 139 appearances in three seasons, scoring 32 times, including the only goal in the 2021 UEFA Champions League final victory over Manchester City.

Arsenal were runners up in the Premier League last season while Chelsea, rebuilding their squad, were 12th.

Football Transfers: European Champions Man City confirm Mateo Kovacic signing from Chelsea

The United States will host the expanded 32-team Club World Cup in 2025, governing body FIFA announced Friday.

"The Club World Cup 2025 will be the pinnacle of elite professional men's club football, and with the required infrastructure in place together with a massive local interest, the United States is the ideal host to kick off this new, global tournament," said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.&nbsp;

The dates, host cities and match schedule for the tournament will be established at a later date, FIFA said. The US will also host the 2026 World Cup along with Canada and Mexico. The Club World Cup has been held annually in a seven-team, or sometimes six-team, format since 2005 with&nbsp;that year's six continental champions plus, when necessary, a representative of the host nation.&nbsp;FIFA announced the enlarged format in February.&nbsp;

The new competition is planned to include four representatives each from Asia, Africa and CONCACAF, which includes North and Central America, as well as six from South America, 12 from Europe, including the winners of last five Champions Cup, and one each from Oceania and the host country.

In theory, the last edition in the smaller format will be played in Saudi Arabia in December.&nbsp;

Six of the places have already been decided with five continental champions -- Manchester City, Leon of Mexico, Egyptians Al Ahly, Urawa Red Diamond from Japan, Auckland City of New Zealand -- and Al Ittihad representing the host country.&nbsp;

The Copa America in South American has not yet finished.

Current plans would leave a one-year gap before the expanded tournament kicks off. Continental federations have reportedly asked FIFA to ensure that their 2024 champions have a chance to play for a global title next year.

FIFA also announced on Friday it was pushing back the decision on the host of the 2030 World Cup from September or October to the second half of next year "to ensure additional consultation with all key stakeholders."

The new competition is planned to include four representatives each from Asia, Africa and CONCACAF, which includes North and Central America, as well as six from South America, 12 from Europe, including the winners of last five Champions Cup, and one each from Oceania and the host country. In theory, the last edition in the smaller format will be played in Saudi Arabia in December. "There is a long process in terms of getting to where you want to get to. I remember going up against Mikel in that early stage," Lampard told reporters ahead of the trip to the Emirates Stadium.

"Sometimes they played five at the back, sometimes four; now they have a clear identity. There has been a lot of work through the team, Mikel, alignment and good recruitment. Do we have the possibility to do that? Yes. Will it take time and good decisions? Absolutely, yes. But you can get there.

"The manager was being questioned, the players and owners were and that process can take two or three years. They are a great example of that done well." 
Lampard conceded that Chelsea's players are "low on confidence" due to their poor run of form, but challenged his side to counteract their lack of self belief with hard work.

"You can only work to get a level of performance to bring confidence back," Lampard said. "I've been here in moments where confidence has been low because nobody likes losing games. I had moments as a player where we dropped our standards as a collective and we had to lift it.

"Looking through history, we managed to get it back through hard work. We can only consider the future and work really hard to get the squad where we want it." 
Lampard added that defender Kalidou Koulibaly could be "out for a while" after injuring his hamstring against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
