'F*** off Mauricio': Chelsea fans boo manager Pochettino after Brentford draw

Mauricio Pochettino believes he still has the backing of Chelsea's owners after defeat by Liverpool in the League Cup final but accepts his future at Stamford Bridge is "out of my hands".

The under-pressure Argentine said he had had constructive conversations with Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali following Sunday's 1-0 extra-time defeat at Wembley.

The loss led to renewed criticism of Pochettino and his expensively assembled squad, with former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, now a TV pundit, accusing Chelsea of being nothing more than a "blue billion-pound bottle-job".&nbsp;

Chelsea, a mediocre 11th in the Premier League, will seek to revive their season at home to Leeds in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday.

"I said hello to the owners when I saw them in the stadium and after (the final) I met Behdad and we were talking," Pochettino said at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

"We were sharing our opinions about the game and the opportunity we missed to win a trophy because I think we played really well during the 90 minutes.

"We created the best chances, we were not clinical enough but that is what has happened since the beginning of the season.

"They (the owners) showed their support and after the game, Todd sent a nice message."

Pochettino, when asked if he would be given time to transform Chelsea's fortunes, replied: "It's&nbsp;not in my hands. We have a very good relationship with the owners, with the sporting director.

"It's up to them to trust or not. It's not the coach's decision."

In a fresh blow for the club, injury-ravaged France international Christopher Nkunku is set to spend up to a month on the sidelines with an unspecified injury sustained at the weekend.

Not the coach's decision: Mauricio Pochettino on getting more time with Chelsea after League Cup loss

Conor Gallagher struck twice to condemn his former club Crystal Palace to a damaging 3-1 defeat on Monday and keep Chelsea in the hunt for European football next season.

The injury-ravaged Eagles were on course for a huge win in their battle to remain in the Premier League when Jefferson Lerma's long-range strike opened the scoring.

But Palace have won just three times in 19 games and were undone late on after Gallagher equalised within two minutes of the second half.

Gallagher fired home his second of the night and Enzo Fernandez added the third in stoppage time to lift Chelsea up to 10th and within two points of seventh.

Defeat leaves Palace still just five points above the relegation zone in 15th.

"It was extremely cruel but the game is about goals and unfortunately we made mistakes which led to goals," said under fire Palace boss Roy Hodgson.

The home side were decimated by key injuries with all three of their star players Eberechi Eze, Michael Olise and Marc Guehi ruled out.

Hodgson and the club's board are under attack from the fans and banners held up before kick-off took aim at a "weak club culture" and "weak transfer policy."

But Palace more than held their own for the first 45 minutes thanks to another lacklustre Chelsea performance away from home.

"We started really flat, we didn't show enough intensity. It was a really tough first 45 minutes," said Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino.

"Second half we started really well, scored the 1-1 and it allowed us to manage the game."

Pochettino had hailed his side's 3-1 FA Cup win at Aston Villa last week as his side's "best performance of the season."

However, it was back to the drawing board for the Argentine in the first half at Selhurst Park as Chelsea were pedestrian in possession and were punished.

Noni Madueke was easily bullied out of possession on the edge of his own box and the ball fell to Lerma to take aim and fire into the top corner beyond Djordje Petrovic.

<h2>Silva setback</h2>

It took until first-half stoppage time for Chelsea to even register a shot as Gallagher dragged his effort across goal.

But that was a warning Palace did not heed.

The start to the second half was delayed while referee Michael Oliver sought repairs to his communication device with his assistants and VAR.

And Palace were caught cold on the restart as Gallagher, who enjoyed a successful loan spell at Palace in the 2021/22 season, smashed home Malo Gusto's cross.

Chelsea suffered a setback when Thiago Silva was forced off with a groin injury that is likely to keep him out of the League Cup final against Liverpool later this month.

But they will at least head into a daunting trip to Manchester City on Saturday with some renewed confidence thanks to a late show that snatched all three points.

Palace kept Cole Palmer quiet for most of the night, but he still proved decisive with two assists in stoppage time.

The former City playmaker picked out Gallagher at the edge of the box to fire home his third goal in two games having not scored all season before then.

Palmer then freed Fernandez as Chelsea galloped from one end of the field to the other on the counter-attack and he sat down Daniel Munoz before stroking into the top corner.

Premier League: Chelsea late show deepens Crystal Palace crisis after second half comeback in London derby

A Chelsea fan pleaded guilty to assaulting Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka after invading the pitch to celebrate a goal at Stamford Bridge.

Jordan Chidley was involved in the incident with Dubravka in December after Chelsea's Mykhailo Mudryk scored a late equaliser in the League Cup quarter-final against Newcastle.

The 25-year-old admitted assault by beating and unlawfully going onto a playing area at a football match.

District judge Neeta Minhas issued a three-year, football banning order and fined him £807 at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

Prosecutor Malachy Pakenham told the court that Chidley climbed down onto the pitch after the goal and ran over to Dubravka.

"The steward tries to grab him, he then puts his arms out and grabs and touches the goalie who pulls away from him," Pakenham said.

The prosecutor told the court the contact was "quite minimal".

'Football is my passion,' insists Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino amid Blues' dismal run in Premier League

A hat-trick from Wolverhampton Wanderers' Matheus Cunha again exposed Chelsea's defensive frailties with the visitors coming from behind to record a 4-2 win at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

It was the second time in a week the big-spending London side had shipped four goals after losing 4-1 to Liverpool on Wednesday and the defeat piled pressure on coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea, who looked bright at the start, went ahead in the 20th minute through Cole Palmer, whose neatly-taken goal was his 10th for his new side in the Premier League.

But two minutes later Joao Gomes found Brazilian compatriot Cunha whose shot took a big deflection off Chelsea defender Thiago Silva.

Wolves' second just before halftime came from a shot by Rayan Ait-Nouri, which hit Axel Disasi and was given as an own-goal with Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic wrongfooted.

Chelsea pushed forward but looked disorganised at the back. At the age of 39, Silva's lack of pace is showing and his young defensive team mates looked short of experience and cohesion.

Cunha made it 3-1 midway through the second half, after Pedro Neto caught Chelsea on the break, and scored his third from the spot in the 82nd after being brought down by defender Malo Gusto.

Brazilian Silva scored a consolation header with four minutes of normal time remaining but by then many home supporters were already leaving the stadium.

The defeat piles pressure on coach Mauricio Pochettino with Chelsea dropping to 11th in the table and Wolves leap-frogging them to 10th.

He said the players were lacking in confidence and performances were not good enough.

"We feel the pressure and the stress to win, to play well to perform. We didn’t have time to feel confident," the Argentine said. "I think we are all not good enough. At the moment this is the reality. Myself, also. What we are showing today is we are not good enough. We didn't manage the situation properly."

The former Tottenham Hotspur coach added that expectations were high and the players felt those expectations.

"At the moment, we are not matching the history of the club... that is true. We need to accept and be critical. We will not give up."

Several voices in the crowd started singing the name of former coach Jose Mourinho, recently sacked by AS Roma, who led Chelsea to three Premier League titles during his tenure.

Chelsea&nbsp;reached the League Cup final with a 6-1 thrashing of Middlesbrough in their semi-final second leg on Tuesday, providing coach Mauricio Pochettino a measure of relief after a poor first half to the season. The big-spending Londoners, who lie a lowly ninth in the Premier League, had squandered a hatful of chances in the first leg away two weeks ago which Middlesbrough won 1-0.

But Tuesday's game underlined the gulf in quality between the Premier League side and their second-tier visitors with the tie finishing 6-2 on aggregate. "Today we were very clinical in front of goal. We missed that in the first leg and we were disappointed. Today we were really good and I think that is the difference," Pochettino told Sky Sports.

Middlesbrough, missing key players through injury, could not repeat their defensive heroics of the first leg and, after conceding an own-goal through captain Jonny Howson in the 15th minute, were already 4-0 down by halftime.

Cole Palmer put away two for&nbsp;Chelsea, in the 42nd and 77th minutes, as the Blues ran rings round their opponents with a sharp, flowing, passing game. "I missed three sitters in the first game so it was always in the back of my mind coming into this game. To score two and go through to Wembley, I'm happy," Palmer told Sky Sports. "We've not had the best of starts, there is no hiding it but to go to Wembley is a great opportunity to get a trophy and we're looking forward to it."

Pochettino praised Palmer's intelligence on the pitch. The forward has now scored 10 goals in his first season with&nbsp;Chelsea. "He is a player with an amazing talent. It is a player that understands the game. He has the quality and the talent to see the situation and to read the game in another aspect," the Argentine coach said.

Enzo Fernandez, Axel Disasi and Noni Madueke also got on the scoresheet, while Morgan Rogers scored a consolation goal for Boro in the 88th minute. Chelsea, who have won the trophy five times, most recently in 2015, will meet either Liverpool or Fulham, who play on Wednesday, in the Wembley final on Feb. 25. The Blues last reached the final two years ago, losing to Liverpool on penalties.

Chelsea thrash Middlesbrough 6-1 to enter League Cup final

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino bemoaned a familiar lack of cutting edge after his team lost the first leg of their League Cup semi-final 1-0 to Championship side Middlesbrough at the Riverside on Tuesday.

Hayden Hackney scored the only goal on 38 minutes as Pochettino's expensively assembled array of stars again failed to perform away from home.

Chelsea have lost five of their last six away games and 21 times on the road since the beginning of last season -- the most of any Premier League team.

The Blues must turn the tie around when the sides meet again at Stamford Bridge on January 23 to avoid heaping more pressure on Pochettino's position during a disappointing first season in charge for the Argentine.

"If we assess the performance overall we were the better side, had clear chances, but we didn't score and weren't clinical," said Pochettino. "It happened a lot this season."

Boro boss Michael Carrick could have been forgiven for cursing his luck after losing top scorer Emmanuel Latte Lath to injury after just three minutes.

Carrick was also forced to withdraw Alex Bangura inside 20 minutes but the second-tier side were not fazed.

"It's very special," said the former Manchester United midfielder. "I know it's a two-legged affair and there is still all to play for, but for what we've had to go through, the injuries, the setbacks we've had, to beat a team of Chelsea's quality is unbelievable."

Middlesbrough had not scored against Chelsea for over 17 years. The Blues had won the past nine meetings by an aggregate score of 21-0.

However, the home side ended that drought eight minutes before half-time.

The pace of Isaiah Jones down the right caused Chelsea's makeshift left-back Levi Colwill problems all night and his low cross was turned in by Hackney from close range.

<h2>Profligate Palmer</h2>

Chelsea, though, should have at least been level at the break had Cole Palmer maintained his fine scoring form in front of goal.

The former Manchester City academy graduate has been one of Chelsea's few big money signings to hit the ground running under Pochettino.

However, Palmer twice failed to hit the target with glorious first-half chances.

Firstly, he pulled his shot wide from the edge of the area after pouncing on an errant pass from Jonny Howson, and then he fired over the rebound after Tom Glover fumbled Enzo Fernandez's effort.

Palmer then fired too close to Glover with another big chance just before the break.

The flow of the second half was a different story as Chelsea pegged the home side back in search of an equaliser.

But there was a familiarity to the visitors' inability to find a way through.

Despite the club spending over £1 billion ($1.3 billion) on players in the last three transfer windows, Pochettino suggested last month he would need to look to strengthen once more in order to address the lack of a goal threat.

Noni Madueke looked the most likely spark to Chelsea's attack, but he was sacrificed as Pochettino threw on Mykhailo Mudryk and Armando Broja.

Raheem Sterling should have been more alive to meet one dangerous low cross from Broja, but that was all Chelsea's vast amount of possession in the final 20 minutes amounted to.

Middlesbrough conceded late to lose 1-0 to Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.

But this time the team that sit 12th in the Championship held out to keep their dreams of a Wembley final against either Liverpool or Fulham very much alive heading into the second leg.

League Cup: Middlesbrough stun Chelsea to take semifinal lead in first leg

Manchester United's miserable season hit a new low as they crashed to a dismal 2-1 defeat at Premier League strugglers Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag's side produced a wretched display that was punished by Morgan Gibbs-White's late winner at the City Ground.

Nicolas Dominguez had put Forest ahead in the second half before Marcus Rashford equalised with just his third goal of a woeful campaign.

United's fourth loss in their last six games in all competitions left them languishing in seventh place in the Premier League, nine points adrift of the top four.

United's stirring fightback from two goals down to beat Aston Villa 3-2 on Tuesday had been heralded as the start of a new era just days after Jim Ratcliffe's investment in the troubled club.

British billionaire Ratcliffe purchased a 25 percent stake in United for around £1.03 billion ($1.3 billion) on Christmas Eve.

Ratcliffe's INEOS Group will take control of United's football operations from unpopular owners the Glazer family.

But despite Ten Hag's claim on Friday that Ratcliffe wants to work with him, this was the latest evidence that the new regime might consider dismissing the beleaguered Dutchman.

INEOS's head of sport Dave Brailsford was watching alongside the club's former boss Alex Ferguson at the City Ground as United were beaten by Forest for the first time since 1994.

Ten Hag will have to oversee a significant improvement in United's results and performances to avoid the axe.

Forest moved five points clear of the relegation zone after Nuno Espirito Santo masterminded his second successive high-profile victory.

Nuno's first win as Forest boss after replacing the sacked Steve Cooper came against Newcastle, but this was an even bigger scalp.

<h2>Turgid United</h2>

After their slow start against Villa, Ten Hag's men once again laboured to find any rhythm as passes went astray with alarming regularity.

Forest had conceded more goals than any other Premier League team in 2023, but it took 32 minutes for United to muster their first shot.

Even then, Aaron Wan-Bissaka's deflected effort trickled tamely to Forest keeper Matt Turner.

Ten Hag's furrowed brow as he stood glumly on the touchline painted a vivid picture of United's struggles.

Elanga was allowed to leave United in the close-season, while the underachieving Antony, hand-picked by Ten Hag from his old club Ajax, remains in the team.

However, it was Elanga, playing with a point to prove, who looked the more dynamic force and it was no surprise when Antony was hauled off after 53 minutes, leaving the Brazilian without a goal or assist in 21 appearances.

United striker Rasmus Hojlund, who scored his first Premier League goal to seal the Villa victory, was sidelined due to illness.

Rashford, playing as United's central striker in Hojlund's absence, might have ended up on the scoresheet, but he hardly looked convincing in the role.

Diogo Dalot fired against the post from 25 yards as United finally pieced together an incisive attack.

But United's turgid display got what it deserved in the 64th minute when Gonzalo Montiel's pass picked out Dominguez and he slotted a cool finish past Andre Onana from 12 yards.

As Forest fans serenaded Ten Hag with chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning", United's Alejandro Garnacho looped a half-volley onto the roof of the net from Bruno Fernandes' corner.

Turner gifted United an equaliser with 12 minutes left when his woeful pass was intercepted by Garnacho, who teed up Rashford to fire past the red-faced keeper from 10 yards.

But even that belated Christmas present wasn't enough to save United, who combusted again in the 82nd minute.

Undone by sloppy marking as Elanga provided the assist, United stood statuesque as Gibbs-White curled a superb strike past Onana from the edge of the area.

Making amends for his earlier mistake, Turner saved from Fernandes in stoppage-time to leave United in turmoil.

Premier League: Manchester United misery mounts in Nottingham Forest defeat; Man City, Chelsea register wins

Manchester United's Scott McTominay continued his rich vein of goalscoring form when he netted either side of halftime to lift his team to a well-deserved 2-1 Premier League victory over Chelsea at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

United dominated in a victory that relieved some pressure on beleaguered manager Erik ten Hag, whose team have been hounded by reports of unrest in the dressing room, and moved them into sixth in the table on 27 points -- three shy of the top four -- after 15 games. Chelsea are 10th on 19 points.

United peppered Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez with 28 shots including nine on target in a terrific fight-back after Saturday's 1-0 loss at Newcastle that McTominay called "abysmal". "The boys were so upset with how we done with that game, it wasn't anywhere near good enough, and to come in tonight and win was a plus and something we can build on," the midfielder told Amazon Prime.

United's victory was their fourth in their last five league games. "After the last game at Newcastle, it was not good," midfielder Sofyan Amrabat said. "We wanted to react today to show the fans our energy and that we wanted to win."

McTominay, who now has five goals in the league this season, opened the scoring in the 19th minute, taking one touch before firing in a left-footed volley after Harry Maguire's shot was blocked. Chelsea's Cole Palmer, who grew up a United fan and was playing his first game at Old Trafford, levelled just before halftime when he threaded a left-footed shot through defender Victor Lindelof's legs and past keeper Andre Onana.

McTominay's second of the night came in the 69th minute when he headed in a pinpoint cross from Alejandro Garnacho. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, who were heavily criticised for their lackadaisical effort on Saturday, were left out of the starting line-up.

United captain Bruno Fernandes had a penalty saved in the ninth minute after VAR determined Antony had been fouled in the penalty area. McTominay had numerous chances for a hat-trick including in a frenzied few seconds when Sanchez denied him with a stunning double save just before the interval.

"The other team deserved the victory," Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino said. "It was difficult at the start. They showed massive energy."

Leaked documents have linked former owner of Chelsea football club Roman Abramovich to two men nicknamed "wallets" of Russian President Vladimir Putin through a multi-million dollar trail, a BBC investigation has revealed.

Abramovich (55) is under sanctions from the UK and the European Union (EU). He has previously denied any financial link to Putin.

BBC has reported that its investigation has revealed documents from Cyprus that link Abramovich, a Russian oligarch to a USD 40 million secret deal made in 2010.

It has been reported that the alleged deal involves transferred shares in a company named Video International which are shown to be of less value than their apparent worth. Video International is a highly profitable Russian company.

It has been alleged that the transactions were made by Abramovich's companies to two people in Putin's inner circle.

The BBC investigation&nbsp;makes a claim that Abramovich's involvement in the transaction may have been concealed with the use of a complex web of companies in the British Virgin Islands and Cyprus.

The two companies, which ultimately belong to Abramovich, bought a combined 25 per cent stake in Video International. The companies are Finoto Holdings and Grosora Holdings.

They are owned by Abramovich through a series of shell companies.

There has not been any immediate reaction from Abramovich on the matter. He has previously denied that he has any financial link to Putin and has also downplayed his relationship with the Russian president.

One of the men in Putin's inner circle who are involved in these transactions is reported to be Sergei Roldugin. He is a cellist and also artistic director of St Petersburg Music House. Putin and Rodulgin have known each other since they were young men in St Petersburg.

Rodulgin is said to have introduced Putin to Lyudmila Shkrebneva, whom the Russian president later married. Rodulgin is also the godfather of the couple's first daughter Maria.

BBC says that the second man involved in the transaction is biochemist-turned-businessman Alexander Plekhov.

Rodulgin and Plekhov have been called "wallets" acting on behalf of Putin and holding his assets.

Ex-Chelsea boss Roman Abramovich has financial links to Putin through 'wallets': Report

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes has been appointed as the new head coach of the United States in a record deal that will make her the world's highest paid women's football coach, the United States Soccer Federation said Tuesday.

Hayes, 47, revealed earlier this month she plans to leave Chelsea at the end of the season after a trophy-laden spell in charge of the English club.

"This is a huge honor to be given the opportunity to coach the most incredible team in world football history," Hayes said in a USSF statement confirming her appointment.

US Soccer did not divulge details of Hayes' contract, but said she would become the "highest paid women's soccer in the world".

ESPN, citing a source with knowledge of the contract negotiations, reported that Hayes' deal would run through 2027 and would see her earn a salary that was "close if not equal" to the $1.6 million earned by US men's football coach Gregg Berhalter.

Hayes will see out her duties with Chelsea in the WSL and then formally take up her US role next year, two months before the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where the Americans will be looking to recapture the gold medal they last won in 2012.

Hayes is one of the most respected figures in the world of women's football, leading Chelsea to six WSL titles, five FA Cups and two league cups as well as other trophies. In 2021, she led Chelsea to the final of the women's Champions League and was named FIFA's women's coach of the year.

The English coach, who started her coaching career in women's club football in the United States in 2001 after a promising playing career was cut short by injury, will now be handed the task of returning the USA to the pinnacle of women's football.

<h2>'I've lived it'</h2>

The US women have dominated women's international football for much of the past decade, winning back-to-back World Cups in 2015 and 2019.

However the Americans were bundled out of the last World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in August in the last 16 -- the team's worst ever showing at a World Cup.

Hayes said her appointment to the US job was the realisation of a lifelong dream, adding that the job was simply impossible to turn down.

"I've dreamed about doing this job from my days as a coach in my early twenties," Hayes said. "You can't turn the US Women's National Team down."

US Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker said Hayes was chosen after the federation worked through "a large list" of candidates.

"We had a group of excellent coaches and leaders to consider, but we felt strongly that Emma was the best person and coach to take the US Women's National Team forward," Crocker said.

Hayes, who started her coaching career as a relative unknown with the Long Island Lady Riders in 2001, before subsequent stints with the Iona Gaels college team and Chicago Red Stars, said her formative years in the US had given her a solid grasp of the importance of the US women's team.

"I understand how important the team is to people and culture of the United States," she said. "I've lived it.

"I remember being a young coach working my way up through the system in the US and watching all those young girls aspire to play on the US Women's National Team.

"For me, the honor of building on that legacy is part of my motivation, no question."

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes has been appointed as the new head coach of the United States in a record deal that will make her the world's highest paid women's football coach, the United States Soccer Federation said Tuesday.

Also Read: Pakistan Cricket Board mulls sacking foreign coaches after World Cup debacle: Report US Soccer did not divulge details of Hayes' contract, but said she would become the "highest paid women's soccer in the world". 'I've lived it' The US women have dominated women's international football for much of the past decade, winning back-to-back World Cups in 2015 and 2019. "You can't turn the US Women's National Team down." US Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker said Hayes was chosen after the federation worked through "a large list" of candidates. The Premier League witnessed a resolute performance on Monday (Nov 6) night as the only unbeaten team in the league Tottenham Hotspur were condemned to their first defeat of the season. Down to 10 men, the Lillywhites were outclassed 4-1 by a returning Mauricio Pochettino who led Chelsea to the win. However, the referees were yet again in the centre of attention after Christian Romero was sent off in the first half while sparking debate in the process. However, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou defended the referee’s decision despite his side ending up on the wrong side of the result.

<h2>Postecoglou defends decision</h2>

"Decisions are decisions: you either accept it or you don't," Postecoglou told Sky Sports.

"Some of it is self-inflicted [but] if we are going to go out and complain about bad decisions every week what will happen is what happened today: a forensic study of every decision.

"I think that's the way the game is going. I don't like it - I could be a lone voice as I'm told that's the way forward. With VAR intervention it just felt like a lot of standing around.

"At some point, we have to accept the referee's decision. This constant erosion of referees' authority, this is what the game is going to get: they will not have any authority, it is going to get diminished and we are going to be in the control of someone a few miles away watching a TV screen,” added the Australian gaffer.

The defeat for Spurs was their first of the season as they now sit second in the league table on 26 points in 11 matches. They along with Arsenal were the only team to have not tasted defeat in the league before the start of the weekend. While Spurs had Romero sent off, they were later down to nine men when Destiny Udogie also got his marching orders.

The win for Chelsea also saw them get 15 points with manager Pochettino leading his side to fourth win of the season. However, they found it hard to break the Tottenham backline despite being at an advantage of two men.

Spurs next take on Wolves on Saturday at the Molineux before facing Aston Villa and Manchester City in the Premier League. Chelsea on the other hand take on City before facing Newcastle and Brighton.

Premier League: Ange Postecoglou defends refereeing decision in Chelsea defeat, says 'decisions are decisions'

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has shot down his team's struggles against breaking a nine-men Tottenham Hotspur side during their Premier League encounter on Monday (Nov 6).&nbsp;

Speaking to reporters after the match,&nbsp;Pochettino recalled the Liverpool vs Tottenham game from September where the Merseyside team was also reduced to nine-man and nearly walked away with a victory, if it wasn't for a wrongly chalked-out goal by VAR and an own goal from Joel Matip.&nbsp;

"I think you are wrong. If you watch Tottenham versus Liverpool, they (Spurs) scored in the last minute. It's never easy [against a team with] two players sent off," said Pochettino.&nbsp;

"It's difficult now to talk about tactics but most important is the 4-1 win and three points. I think we deserved to win. We forced them to make too many mistakes," he added.&nbsp;

While Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota were sent off in the Liverpool game, the home side on Monday was left without the services of Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie.&nbsp;

Spurs started the game by seizing the advantage in the sixth minute via a deflected goal from Dejan Kulusevski. However, that was to be the only positive for the London-based team as Chelsea dominated from thereon.&nbsp;

"Tottenham was better in the first 15 minutes and then I think we bossed the game, our performance was good and forced them into making mistakes. If you look at everything you could see during the game, I think it was fair. It could be an important three points for us, to help us now start to push up the table."

<h2>Chelsea vs Spurs&nbsp;high press</h2>

Despite having the lion's share of possession and the numerical advantage, Chelsea found it difficult to beat the high-press set by Ange Postecoglou. Pochettino's strikers repeatedly strayed offside and it wasn't until the 75th minute that the Blues finally managed to beat the suicidal Spurs trap.&nbsp;

Nicolas Jackson hit a hattrick to complete the victory and take Chelsea&nbsp;to the 10th spot in the points table. Meanwhile, the loss meant that Spurs ceded their top position to Manchester City.&nbsp;

While the loss may have stung Postecoglou's men, it is the absence of Romero, Udogie and perhaps James Maddison and&nbsp;Micky van de Ven in the upcoming matches that will trouble them more. With the match against City scheduled after the international break, Spurs would hope that its bench strength could carry the momentum gained since the beginning of the season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Premier League: 'You're wrong', Chelsea boss Pochettino defends his team's inability to break down 9-man Spurs

Mauricio Pochettino has reflected on the prospect of facing boos from Tottenham Hotspur fans when his Chelsea side face his former London team.&nbsp;Pochettino said he will take whatever the Tottenham fans deliver in his stride.

The decision by Pochettino to join his former club's&nbsp;fierce cross-city rivals has not gone down well with a section of supporters at the&nbsp;Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, Pochettino said it wasn't him that severed ties with the club.&nbsp;

"I am going to accept what they will show. I didn’t decide to leave. We parted ways because I was sacked. It’s not a criticism of the club...but we didn’t decide to leave. Maybe we would still be there," said Pochettino.

Despite Pochettino's move to Stamford Bridge, it is worth noting that the Argentine had an outstanding five and a half years at Spurs. Under his tenure, Spurs left the ignominy of a mid-table club and turned into a top-four competitor whilst coming perilously close to a Champions League trophy.&nbsp;

The Chelsea boss recalled his working relationship with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and recalled how he texted him.&nbsp;

“Daniel is really clever. It is amazing, the job he is doing for Tottenham. You see Tottenham 20 years ago and now, how it changed, how it moved on. You need to recognise his job.”

"He sent a text when I signed here, wishing the best to me and to everyone. We need to be natural. Nearly six years working together. How many things happened in six years? Good and not so good! We cannot forget our relationship now."

'I was sacked...': Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino ahead of return to Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino believes Premier League leaders Tottenham are genuine title contenders as he braces himself for a return to his former club as Chelsea boss on Monday.

Pochettino made his name as one of the world's leading managers during his five years in charge of Spurs between 2014 and 2019.

He led the club to their first Champions League final and four consecutive top-four finishes in the Premier League.

However, the Argentine was not able to end Spurs' trophy drought that stretches back to 2008.

Current Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is off to the best start of any new manager in the Premier League after taking 26 from a possible 30 points in his first 10 games.

Spurs have not won the English top flight since 1961, but Pochettino said they have to be taken seriously as contenders.

"Ange and the coaching staff, they are doing a fantastic job and then of course very good players, very good team," said Pochettino. "You can feel they can be a contender.

"Of course it's early in the season but they are showing the quality to be contenders."

It remains to be seen what kind of reception awaits Pochettino at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs had struggled badly in the time between his surprise sacking four years ago and the arrival of Postecoglou.

But his decision to return to the Premier League at a London rival has not gone down well with some sections of the Spurs support.

"The most important thing is people know that we cannot forget all that we lived together, amazing memories there," he said.

"I am going to respect the people however they are going to express (their feelings), but it's not going to change my emotion, my view, my feelings about a club that I think we spend an unbelievable journey (with).

"I am back after four years in a place that we have amazing memories, we created amazing memories together. I think it's special, I'm not going to lie."

James played the first hour of Wednesday's 2-0 League Cup last-16 win over Blackburn.

"I think it was good for him to start the game and to feel him there again after a few months for the team, because he is our captain and he is a very important player," added Pochettino.

"Now we need to assess him, if he’s ready or not to start on Monday."

"I am back after four years in a place that we have amazing memories, we created amazing memories together. I think it's special, I'm not going to lie." Despite another record splurge on new players in the transfer market, Chelsea sit 11th in the table, 14 points behind of Tottenham. But the Blues could be boosted by the return of captain Reece James to the starting line-up in the Premier League for the first time since the opening weekend of the season.

Premier League: Chelsea's Mauricio Pochettino says Spurs are title contenders ahead of return

Chelsea slumped to another damaging home defeat against Brentford on Saturday (Oct 28) as Eddie Nketiah hit a first Premier League hat-trick in a 5-0 win for Arsenal against struggling Sheffield United.

Chelsea slumped to another damaging home defeat against Brentford on Saturday (Oct 28) as Eddie Nketiah hit a first Premier League hat-trick in a 5-0 win for Arsenal against struggling Sheffield United. Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea appeared to have turned a corner in recent weeks, taking seven points from their three previous fixtures, but their 2-0 loss means they have just one home win from their past 13 games in the league. Ethan Pinnock took advantage of non-existent marking to head the visitors in front shortly before the hour mark at Stamford Bridge after Chelsea had failed to capitalise on their first-half dominance. Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was embarrassed in added time after joining his team's attack for a corner, failing to catch Neal Maupay in a race as he broke with the ball, allowing Bryan Mbeumo to score in an empty net to compound home fans' woes. The result means Brentford leapfrog Chelsea into 10th place in the Premier League table, pushing Pochettino's men into the bottom half. "I'm not happy and think the players also and the whole club is not happy about the run (at home)," said the Argentine manager. "It's a long time that we need to be more consistent here and very disappointed with this. We feel the responsibility that we need to change the dynamic." The former Tottenham boss said on Friday that Christopher Nkunku is nearing a comeback from the knee injury that has prevented the $63 million signing making a competitive appearance yet for his new club. On this evidence, the French international's return cannot come soon enough as Chelsea's other new striker, Nicolas Jackson, again failed to fire. "If you don't score, you need to blame ourselves," said Pochettino. "We were not nasty or clinical in front of the goal." Also read | Premier League: Mikel Arteta calls for bigger squads as Arsenal suffer double injury blow Nketiah hat-trick It was a different story for London rivals Arsenal, who roared back from 2-0 down to draw against Chelsea last week to preserve their unbeaten league record. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta shuffled his pack --including dropping captain Martin Odegaard to the bench -- for the visit of bottom club Sheffield United and Nketiah celebrated his recall to the starting line-up in style. Replacing the injured Gabriel Jesus as Arsenal's target man at the Emirates Stadium, Nketiah proved he was up to the task as a swivelled finish gave the home side a 28th-minute lead. The England forward arrowed a shot into the top corner early in the second half and completed his treble with a stunning strike from distance just before the hour mark. Substitutes Fabio Vieira and Takehiro Tomiyasu added gloss to the scoreline with a penalty and a close-range finish as Arsenal moved up to second in the table, two points behind Tottenham, who beat Crystal Palace on Friday. "It's amazing," said Nketiah. "It's not been easy -- last month I lost my auntie so I want to dedicate these three goals to her. Her family was here watching so it is a really special moment." Bournemouth came from behind to beat fellow strugglers Burnley 2-1 and secure their first league win of the season thanks to a fine solo effort from Antoine Semenyo and a sensational lob from distance by Philip Billing late in the game. Newcastle, who have won four of their past five league games, take on Wolves in the late kick-off. In a shock announcement, Belgian football star Eden Hazard on Tuesday (Oct&nbsp;10) announced his retirement from professional football, aged 32. Hazard, a former Chelsea winger had been released by Spanish giants Real Madrid at the end of&nbsp;last season and had been a free agent ever since.&nbsp;

His retirement brings curtains on a career that had all the makings of an all-timer but could not materialise due to injuries and an ill-fitting move to the Los Blancos.&nbsp;

"You must listen to yourself and say stop at the right time. After 16 years and more than 700 matches played, I have decided to end my career as a professional footballer," said Hazard in an emotional post.&nbsp;

"During my career I was lucky to meet great managers, coaches and teammates - thank you to everyone for these great times, I will miss you all," he added.&nbsp;

The talented winger expressed gratitude towards his former clubs and added:&nbsp;"I also want to thank the clubs I have played for: LOSC, Chelsea and Real Madrid; and thank the RBFA for my Belgian selection."

"A special thank you to my family, my friends, my advisors and the people who have been close to me in good times and bad."

As a Real Madrid player, Hazard only mustered seven goals and 12 assists in 76 appearances after making a $107 million move from Chelsea in June 2019.
&nbsp;

Despite sedentary performances, Hazard managed to win the Champions League, a Club World Cup, a European Super Cup, two La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey and two Spanish Super Cups.&nbsp;

However, for Chelsea, where Hazard moved for a modest&nbsp;$39 million fee in 2012, he went on to win the Premier League twice while scoring&nbsp;110 goals across 352 appearances including the winner in the 2019 Europa League final against Arsenal in his final appearance for the club.

Eden Hazard retires at 32 from professional football after failing to land new club

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has come up with an amusing analogy over the ongoing controversy involving the Virtual Assistant Referee (VAR). Speaking ahead of his side's Premier League encounter against Burnley, Pochettino said he "trusts in the car but it is the driver that is the problem", referring to the VAR officials and the technology.&nbsp;

After Liverpool were wrongly denied a goal against Tottenham Hotspur (one of Pochettino's previous clubs), a discourse has started on the efficiency of VAR and whether it is spoiling the modern game.&nbsp;

"I trust in the VAR and how we manage the VAR. I trust in the car but the driver? That is the problem," said Pochettino.&nbsp;

The Italian manager suggested that the technology be simplified by returning the power to on-ground referees.&nbsp;

"For me, it is about simplifying the situation. The most important is to return to giving [more] power to the referee. I think one step back may make things easier and more clear. To accept when it’s a foul because sometimes when it’s live the perception is different and to trust in the referee's decision."

Expounding on his solution, the Chelsea boss added: "Trust in the referee because at the moment we are not happy with VAR, we are not happy with the people that manage the VAR but the worse is we are not happy with the referee and that is the problem."

<h2>Postecoglou accepts Liverpool denied a goal</h2>

Pochettino's statement came hours after Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou accepted Liverpool were denied a "legitimate goal" but said it was "clear it wasn't an integrity issue" which caused the error.

"Whatever I say is maybe going to be seen through the prism that we were the beneficiaries of the mistake. The facts are there was a legitimate goal that Liverpool scored which wasn't given," said the Aussie manager.&nbsp;

"My view is that we want a faultless system - that will just never exist unless we turn our game into an event which goes on for four hours and we explain every decision."

Notably, the VAR audio released on Tuesday (October 3) by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) revealed that VAR Darren England and his assistant Dan Cook had the opportunity to correct their mistake after the VAR replay operator reminded them they had taken the wrong call.&nbsp;

However, instead of using the rules as a framework and applying common sense, England displayed rigidity and said he could not do anything, even though the game had been in the next phase for barely 15 seconds.

'I trust the car but driver is the problem': Chelsea boss Pochettino's amusing analogy over VAR controversy

Goal-shy Chelsea finally found their cutting edge on Monday, striking twice in 82 seconds to earn a morale-boosting 2-0 win against Fulham as Mykhailo Mudryk finally got off the mark.

Mauricio Pochettino's injury-ravaged team travelled to the home of their near-neighbours just two points above the relegation zone and with only five goals to their name.

Wasted early opportunities hinted at familiar failings but Ukrainian winger Mudryk scored his first goal in a Chelsea shirt in the 18th minute and Armando Broja doubled the lead in the blink of an eye.

The win lifts Chelsea to mid-table and eases the pressure on beleaguered new manager Pochettino, whose team had failed to score in their previous three Premier League games.

The former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss had pleaded for ruthlessness in front of goal and his nerves were settled by his team's quickfire first-half double.

"It's important for us to build our confidence and trust in ourselves," Pochettino told Sky Sports.&nbsp;

"The performance was very good, I'm so happy for the players and in the end we got what we deserved."

<h2>Bright start</h2>

Chelsea started brightly at Craven Cottage but failed to take advantage.

Albania forward Broja, making his first start since November 2022, blazed over from an offside position shortly after kick-off and the lively Mudryk also wasted a chance.

But the visitors got their reward in the 18th minute when a long ball from the back found Levi Colwill on the left.&nbsp;

Colwill passed to Mudryk, who controlled the ball on his chest before producing a composed finish for his first goal for the club since his big-money move from Shakhtar Donetsk in January.

Chelsea doubled their lead when Broja capitalised on a defensive mistake from Fulham centre-half Tim Ream, who gifted the ball to new signing Cole Palmer.

The ex-Manchester City man played the ball forward only for Ream to kick it against Broja and watch in horror as it rebounded into the net.

Chelsea, playing with zest, could have extended their lead further but Enzo Fernandez's strike flew narrowly wide.

The home side failed to muster a single shot on target in the first half, though Raul Jimenez went close with a header from Andreas Pereira's outswinging corner as half-time approached.

Mudryk did not appear for the second half, replaced by defender Ian Maatsen.

Fulham looked more threatening after the break and manager Marco Silva threw on forwards Alex Iwobi and Carlos Vinicius within the first 10 minutes.

Vinicius headed over before a heart-in-mouth moment for Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who was able to reclaim the ball after his goal kick was intercepted by Pereira.

Chelsea went agonisingly close to extending their lead when Maatsen thundered a strike against the left upright, with Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno saving smartly from Fernandez's follow-up.

Fulham had a wonderful chance to pull a goal back when Tom Cairney found fellow substitute Sasa Lukic in the six-yard box but he could only blast straight at Sanchez.

Chelsea held on relatively comfortably to climb to 11th place, above Fulham on goal difference.

Premier League: Chelsea stun Fulham with quickfire double, Mykhailo Mudryk scores first goal

Days after courting a massive controversy, the Premier League and Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has come under scanner once again. This time, the VAR (Virtual Assistant Referee) failed to reprimand Fulham's Carlos Vinicius after he landed a karate chop on Chelsea's Thiago Silva during their Monday (October 2) night encounter.

After Chelsea led via two goals from Mykhailo Mudryk and Armando Broja in the first half, Fulham attempted to catch Mauricio Pochettino's side in the second half. However, when centre-back Thiago Silva controlled the ball away from his box, Vinicius came steaming in from behind and karate-chopped his Brazilian counterpart. He then bizarrely struck Silva on the back of the head with the side of his hand, which prompted the Chelsea backline leader to collapse into a heap. To everyone's surprise, neither the referee intervened nor did the VAR suggest any action, despite replaying the incident multiple times. Netizens furious Furious netizens took to X and vented their frustrations with one saying, “It was a red card for Vinicius with that karate chop. F**k VAR, f**k officiating in this country, it’s totally biased and favouritism-based," while another added: “Blatant red card for Vinicius. VAR is a f*****g mess.” "VAR check for common assault on Thiago Silva you could get arrested for on a Friday night in UK town centres. Check complete. Nothing given," said a third. Down to 10 men, the team from Merseyside took the lead, courtesy of a fabulous finish from Colombian striker Luis Diaz. However, the referee and VAR deemed the goal to be offside, without drawing the usual lines and going through the footage multiple times, as is the norm. After the match, PGMOL released an apology statement where it recognised that VAR Darren England and his assistant Dan Cook failed to overturn the on-field decision of offside despite carrying out the required procedures. Also read | Premier League: Liverpool blast PGMOL over 'unfair' VAR call, release strong statement after Spurs defeat PGMOL released a statement, accepting the human error by the officials. However, the situation did not go well with Liverpool, who also released a statement to clear their stand. “We fully accept the pressures that match officials work under but these pressures are supposed to be alleviated, not exacerbated, by the existence and implementation of VAR. “It is therefore unsatisfactory that sufficient time was not afforded to allow the correct decision to be made and that there was no subsequent intervention." Since then Liverpool has demanded that the VAR audio be released for complete transparency. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

'It was assault': Fans angry after VAR misses Vinicius' karate chop on Thiago Silva

Manchester City crashed out of the League Cup with a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle on Wednesday as Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool booked their places in the last 16.

Alexander Isak scored the only goal at St. James' Park in a clash between two much-changed sides.

City won the treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup last season, but any dream of surpassing that feat with an unprecedented quadruple was swiftly brought to an end.

Erling Haaland was left on the bench by City coach Pep Guardiola for the full 90 minutes and his presence was missed in a toothless display.

Eddie Howe also rang the changes from an 8-0 thrashing of Sheffield United at the weekend.

But it was not until the Newcastle boss introduced Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes at half-time that the hosts took control.

Isak had the simple task of slotting home at the far post after a burst from Joelinton opened up the City defence.

"A win like this can elevate us," said Howe.

"First-half we tried to rotate the squad and keep our players fresh. Second-half we were better for sure, but when you bring on players like Anthony Gordon and Bruno, they're high level players."

Newcastle's reward is a fourth-round trip to Manchester United in a repeat of last season's final.

<h2>Chelsea bounce back</h2>

Chelsea prevented the crisis at Stamford Bridge deepening as Nicolas Jackson's goal beat Brighton 1-0.

The Senegalese's wastefulness in front of goal has been partly to blame for the Blues' return of one win in their opening six Premier League games under Mauricio Pochettino.

But Jackson coolly slotted home from the impressive Cole Palmer's pass on 50 minutes.

Chelsea will face Blackburn in the last 16.

Arsenal were also 1-0 winners at Brentford as Aaron Ramsdale responded to being controversially dropped by Mikel Arteta.

Reiss Nelson's eighth-minute goal separated the sides despite a Brentford onslaught after the break.

Arteta has preferred David Raya to Ramsdale in goal for the past three games.

But the England international was needed for the Gunners to progress as he produced a brilliant stop to deny Yoane Wissa an equaliser.

Arsenal will travel to West Ham in the next round after the Hammers were 1-0 winners at third-tier Lincoln.

Liverpool trailed to Championship leaders Leicester after just three minutes before fighting back to win 3-1.

Kasey McAteer rounded off a rapid counter-attack to give the Foxes a flying start.

Jurgen Klopp's men laid seige to the visitors' goal but were made to wait until after the break to draw level.

The equaliser was made in the Netherlands as Ryan Gravenberch set up Cody Gakpo to find the far corner.

Klopp then turned to his bench to find a winner and found it through a stunning strike from Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Hungarian captain took aim from outside the box and smashed the ball into the top corner 20 minutes from time.

"Dom was a surprise with how fast he has fitted in, it was pretty much from the first minute," said Klopp on Szoboszlai's fast start to his Liverpool career.

"Top-class player with a lot of quality. He never stops."

Diogo Jota's backheel in off the far post then made the tie safe.

Klopp's men will travel to Bournemouth in round four.

Everton built on their first Premier League win of the season at Brentford on Saturday with an impressive 2-1 victory at Aston Villa.

The Toffees were thrashed 4-0 on their visit to Villa Park in the league last month, but goals from James Garner and Dominic Calvert-Lewin helped Sean Dyche's men gain revenge.

Isak had the simple task of slotting home at the far post after a burst from Joelinton opened up the City defence. "A win like this can elevate us," said Howe. "First-half we tried to rotate the squad and keep our players fresh. Second-half we were better for sure, but when you bring on players like Anthony Gordon and Bruno, they're high level players." Newcastle's reward is a fourth-round trip to Manchester United in a repeat of last season's final. ALSO READ | Glenn Maxwell stars with ball as Australia beat India by 66 runs in final ODI, avoid whitewash Chelsea bounce back Chelsea prevented the crisis at Stamford Bridge deepening as Nicolas Jackson's goal beat Brighton 1-0. He never stops." Diogo Jota's backheel in off the far post then made the tie safe. EFL Cup: Man City crash out at Newcastle, Chelsea bounce back; Arsenal, Liverpool win

Troubled Chelsea had to settle for a disappointing 0-0 draw against Bournemouth on Sunday as their dismal start to the Premier League season showed no signs of improving. Mauricio Pochettino's side have won just once in five league games this term and they were booed off after lacking any semblance of a cutting edge at the Vitality Stadium.

The Blues are without a goal in their last two matches and have scored only five times in the league this season. They are languishing in 14th place, closer to the relegation zone than the top four, as Pochettino comes to terms with the size of the task facing him at Stamford Bridge.

"I cannot say that I am happy but it was a very competitive game. We should win 1-0 or 2-0 easily because in the first 30 minutes we had the chances," Pochettino said. "With 12 injuries and only three players that started today who were with us for these two weeks I think I need only need to say it was a really good effort."

The former Tottenham and Paris Saint Germain boss was hired in the close-season to clean up the mess left by Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard, who all had spells in charge of Chelsea during last season's wretched campaign.

But Pochettino has so far been unable to make an impact despite Chelsea's £350 million spending spree on new signings.

A rash of untimely injuries haven't helped but Chelsea's decision to largely sign younger players has left Pochettino with an inexperienced squad that lacks the maturity to close out games.

"We need to prove our efficiency in front of goal. We need to be calm also but these circumstances are not always easy for the players. We cannot blame anyone," Pochettino said. "The fans are disappointed because of the situation but I am not worried about that because we really know what we are doing."

Challenging for a place in the Champions League was Pochettino's target this season, but that ambition already seems overly optimistic on the evidence of this drab display against winless Bournemouth. While it is too soon to say Pochettino is in danger of the sack, he will be well aware Potter lasted less than seven months before being sacked by co-owner Todd Boehly.

<h2>- Lacklustre Chelsea -</h2>

Pochettino made two changes from the side that lost to Nottingham Forest in their previous game, with big-money summer signing Moises Caicedo left out of the squad and teenager Lesley Ugochukwu given his first Premier League start.

Chelsea tried to seize the initiative in the early stages, but Enzo Fernandez fired straight at Neto from the edge of the area before Raheem Sterling dragged his shot woefully wide from a dangerous position.

Nicolas Jackson went much closer when the Senegal striker drilled his shot against the post from 20 yards.

Despite their bright start, Chelsea were nearly undone by woeful defending as the unmarked Dango Ouattara reached a cross with a close-range effort that forced a fine save from Robert Sanchez.

Gallagher should have put Chelsea ahead with a shot on the turn from 10 yards, but Neto plunged to his right to make a good save.

Chelsea thought they had finally taken the lead early in the second when Sterling's free-kick bounced off the bar to Levi Colwill, who slotted into the empty net only to see his effort disallowed for offside.

But it was Bournemouth who finished stronger and Axel Disasi narrowly avoided conceding a penalty when his despairing lunge brought down Justin Kluivert just outside the area.

Sanchez came to Chelsea's rescue in the 80th minute, saving with his legs to keep out Dominic Solanke's strike.

Sterling could have won it with a close-range header that lacked the power to beat Neto, who also made a fine instinctive save to repel Cole Palmer's close-range volley.

Premier League: Bournemouth stalemate hurt Chelsea as Blues struggle on points table

The transfer deadline day has turned out to be a chaotic affair as clubs across Europe have splashed the cash in the final few hours to acquire the services of the player of their choice. Manchester United are likely to get three deals over the line on the deadline day while Bayern failed with their triple swoop as the window closed in Germany. Chelsea and Manchester City also got their transfer deals over the line while Barcelona are awaiting the confirmation of the deals for Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix.

<h2>Chelsea and Man City get deals done</h2>

Chelsea started the day with a big buzz as they signed England Under-21 forward Cole Palmer from Manchester City in a deal worth an initial £40 million ($50 million). The deal saw City with enough cash to splash on the signing of Matheus Nunes from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a five-year contract. Pep Guardiola’s side paid 53 million pounds ($67.20 million) for the 25-year-old. City then rested their case for the incomings as they now focus on the Premier League season.

On the flip side, Manchester United were active in the market as well as secured the signing of Turkey goalkeeper Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce. United paid £4.3 million ($5.3 million) for the goalkeeper who will play second fiddle to Andre Onana at Old Trafford.&nbsp; The Red Devils also secured a loan deal for Tottenham Hotspur outcast Sergio Reguilon as he made his switch to Manchester on a loan deal until 2024.

At the time of writing, United had not confirmed the signing of Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina, but are closing in on a deal for the midfielder.

<h2>Drama in Germany</h2>

The drama in Germany though also attracted big interest as Bayern Munich failed with three big transfers. With João Palhinha in Germany, the club could not secure the transfer of Fulham before the end of the window. The player even had medicals booked but failed to make his move. Other players part of the domino include Armel Bella-Kotchap and Trevoh Chalobah.

In outgoings, Bayern are likely to confirm the departure of Ryan Gravenberch as the Dutch player closes in on a move to Liverpool. At the time of writing, Barcelona had not confirmed the arrival of Cancelo and Felix, but are likely to sign the players to bolster their squad.

Transfer Deadline Day: Man Utd double swoop, Bayern fail with three deals; Cancelo, Felix to join Barcelona

Chelsea and Everton narrowly avoided humiliating League Cup exits against fourth tier opposition as they scraped into the third round on Wednesday.

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea trailed against minnows AFC Wimbledon before recovering to win 2-1 thanks to Enzo Fernandez's first goal for the club.

Struggling Everton came from behind in the closing stages to beat Doncaster 2-1.

Sheffield United were not as fortunate as their Premier League counterparts, the Blades crashing out against third tier Lincoln on penalties.

Mauricio Pochettino made seven changes to the side that beat Luton 3-0 for his first win as Chelsea boss on Friday.

Ian Maatsen, Lesley Ugochukwu and Mason Burstow made their first starts, while Diego Moreira was handed his debut.

Wimbledon struck against Chelsea's youthful side in the 19th minute.

Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez collided with Harry Pell as he came off his line in a failed attempt to collect a cross, conceding a penalty that James Tilley calmly stroked home.

Chelsea equalised on the stroke of half-time when Noni Madueke netted from the spot after the winger was fouled by Alex Pearce.

Fernandez added more composure to Chelsea's midfield after coming off the bench and the Argentine World Cup winner put his side ahead in the 72nd minute.

Taking advantage of a mix-up in the Wimbledon defence, Fernandez slotted home to finally get on the scoresheet after arriving from Benfica for £106 million in January.

"It was tough but we really enjoyed it," said Pochettino, whose side will host Brighton in the third round.

"It is always difficult to play against a team like this. That is the beauty of the cups. I'm happy with the performance overall."

<h2>Beto revives Everton</h2>

After three successive defeats to start the league season, Everton were pushed to the brink of more misery by a Doncaster side sitting bottom of fourth tier League Two.

Everton boss Sean Dyche made just four changes in a bid to avoid a giant-killing at the Eco-Power Stadium.

But Everton fell behind in the 44th minute when Joe Ironside punished sloppy defending to head Tommy Rowe's cross past Jordan Pickford.

Dyche sent on Portuguese striker Beto, signed from Udinese for £30 million this week, for his debut at the start of the second half.

Beto scored 21 Serie A goals in two seasons with Udinese and the 25-year-old quickly put his predatory instincts on display in a Toffees shirt.

Sprinting onto Abdoulaye Doucoure's hopeful pass forward in the 73rd minute, Beto got behind the Doncaster defence and guided a clinical finish into the far corner for Everton's first goal this season.

Arnaut Danjuma's composed strike from the edge of the area in the 88th minute set up a third round tie at Aston Villa.&nbsp;

"Beto is raw and can be effective. We changed a few things at half-time and reminded them they are Premier League players," Dyche said.

"We have a lot of young players learning. You lot (the media) are waiting for us to lose and I reminded them of that."

Sheffield United's miserable start to the season hit a new low with a 3-2 penalty shoot-out loss to third tier Lincoln at Bramall Lane.

After a drab 90 minutes ended goalless, Lincoln goalkeeper Lukas Jensen saved spot-kicks from Louis Marsh and Benie Traore to hand the Blades a fourth successive defeat.

Burnley won 1-0 at fellow top-flight side Nottingham Forest thanks to Zeki Amdouni's close-range volley in second half stoppage-time.

Vincent Kompany's Clarets will travel to Salford in the third round after the fourth tier side shocked Leeds on Tuesday.

Championship side Blackburn thrashed fourth tier Harrogate 8-0 in the biggest away win in their 148-year history.

The pick of the third round ties sees treble winners Manchester City travel to last season's runners-up Newcastle.

Holders Manchester United host Crystal Palace, while Liverpool face Leicester at Anfield and Arsenal travel to Brentford.

EFL Cup: Chelsea, Everton survive scares; Sheffield Utd crash out in round two

Italian football giants AS Roma have completed the loan signing of Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea on Thursday, August 31. The move sees Lukaku reunite with Jose Mourinho for the third time at a different club as they look forward to the Serie A season. The striker was initially in limbo for the summer having rejected proceedings from Inter Milan while Juventus were unable to price him away from Chelsea.

The star Belgian player scored 14 goals in 37 Serie A matches for Inter Milan as they finished runners-up in the Champions League and lifted the Copa Italia. He will wear No. 90 for the 2022 Europa Conference League winners.

<h2>Jose gets his man</h2>

The pair of Jose Mourinho and Lukaku have reunited for the third time having first shared the dressing room at Chelsea in 2013. A short two-week spell saw Jose manage Lukaku at Chelsea where he played in the 2013 UEFA Super Cup final against Bayern Munich. The star-studded Belgian missed the decisive penalty as Chelsea finished runners-up. It reported that both Lukaku and Mourinho had a rift which saw him loaned out to Everton.

Mourinho in 2014 sanctioned Lukaku’s sale to Everton despite the lack of strikers at the club, again surfacing rumours of a rift between the pair. However, in 2017 with Zlatan Ibrahimović injured and Wayne Rooney sold to Everton, Mourinho ended the rift by signing Lukaku for Manchester United in a reported $90 million deal. He would stay at United for two years before signing for Inter Milan in Italy.

Thursday’s move now means that Lukaku will again work with the Portuguese gaffer although the move is temporary.&nbsp;

Thursday’s move now means that Lukaku will again work with the Portuguese gaffer although the move is temporary. In Chelsea's outgoing, former Brighton man Marc Cucurella could end up as a Manchester United player if a deal is reached with Chelsea.

Another player that could be on the move is Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Højbjerg as the Dane has attracted interest from Manchester United. Football Transfer: Chelsea, Man City gear up for final push before deadline

Pep Guardiola said Manchester City are judged differently than other clubs on the subject of transfer spending, arguing they would be "killed" if they splashed out as much money on new signings as Chelsea have over the last 12 months.

City's spending has been scrutinised since Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Mansour became owner in 2008. The club is facing 115 charges brought by the Premier League for alleged breaches of financial regulations.

Chelsea have spent more than $1 billion in player transfer fees since the new ownership led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital completed their takeover of the club in May 2022.

"We'd be under scrutiny like you couldn't imagine," Guardiola told reporters on Friday. "I couldn't sit here if we spent what Chelsea spent in the last two transfer windows - you would kill me.

"We have to see what happens in the market and if we can do it and to pay what we believe is fair... In the end, we will pay what is fair to do it. Otherwise, we have the academy."

City signed defender Josko Gvardiol earlier this month while midfielder Mateo Kovacic joined in June, with the transfer fees reported to be 90 million euros ($97.79 million) and 25 million pounds ($32 million), respectively.

Chelsea have brought in eight players so far. Midfielder Romeo Lavia arrived on Friday for a reported fee of 53 million pounds, their second signing of the week after Moises Caicedo joined for a fee which could rise to a British record 115 million pounds.

"I don't criticise Chelsea for one second," Guardiola added. "I'm saying, if we do it, we're dead, all around the world. They can do what they want.

"If they want to spend, I don't know, 900 million pounds since (Boehly) arrived, 900 more, 900 more - they have it. The business is the business. They sell a lot this season so they can do it."

City began their Premier League title defence with a 3-0 win at Burnley last week. They host Newcastle United on Saturday.

If we spent what Chelsea spent in last two transfer windows, you would kill me: Pep Guardiola tells media

Chelsea have snapped up Southampton sensation Romeo Lavia on a seven-year deal as the player switches alliances from the south coast to London. The signing was confirmed on Friday, August 18 as the West London club beat off competition from Liverpool to land the Belgian international. A reported fee of $67.5 million was paid by the Blues to get the signing over the line as he becomes the latest addition to the side after the record capture of Moisés Caicedo from Brighton.

<h2>Lavia signs for Chelsea</h2>

"I can't wait to meet all my new team-mates and build a chemistry together to achieve great things together," Lavia told Chelsea's website.

Lavia, 19, becomes the eighth player to join Chelsea in the summer transfer window having spent only one season at the south coast club. He joined Saints from Manchester City in 2022 and starred for the side despite their relegation from the Premier League. Interestingly, there was no buy-back clause or sell-on clause activated by City, which therefore means that the Premier League champions won’t have any direct financial benefit from Lavia’s sale.

Lavia made 29 appearances for Southampton in the entire 2022-23 season and interestingly his only goal for the club came against Chelsea in August last year. He has been capped once by the Belgium national side when he played in the Euro 2024 qualifier against Sweden in March 2023.

Chelsea have already bought in players worth more than $400 million with several big names like Mason Mount and Kai Havertz on the outgoing list. The club's big spending spree includes deals for Caicedo, Christopher Nkunku, goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and forward Nicolas Jackson.

The club started their Premier League season with a 1-1 home draw against Liverpool on Sunday, August 13. The Blues will be without European football for the upcoming season and will play West Ham United in a London derby on coming Sunday in their first away match of the season.
