<p>Masson told HT that the idea behind buying a plot on the Moon was linked to humanity's inherent curiosity about what lies out there.</p>

<p>"Ideas of occupying space on the moon are a reflection of our quest to see what lies beyond, which is itself a reflection of our quest for deeper meaning within ourselves," he said.</p>

<p>This lunar property was purchased from The Lunar Registry in New York City and was officially certified on August 25, according to Masson.</p>

<p>He said that the Moon represents a symbol of hope for the future and could also serve as a psychological escape hatch for humans facing the challenges of climate change.</p>

<p>The seismic activity-detecting equipment — The Instrument for the Lunar Seismic Activity (ILSA) payload — on board the lander also detected vibrations taking place due to the movements of the mission's Pragyan rover and other payloads, the ISRO said on Thursday (Aug 31).</p>

<p>"Instrument for the Lunar Seismic Activity (ILSA) payload on Chandrayaan 3 Lander -- the first Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology-based instrument on the moon -- has recorded the movements of Rover and other payloads," the Indian space agency said in a post on micro-blogging site X.</p>

<h2><strong>Source being probed </strong></h2>

<p>"It has recorded an event, appearing to be a natural one, on August 26, 2023. The source of this event is under investigation," it added.</p>

<p>ILSA's primary objective is to measure ground vibrations generated by natural quakes, impacts, and artificial events.</p>

<p>This comes as the Rover discovered several chemical elements on the lunar surface.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While conducting the experiments, the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) instrument onboard found sulphur.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"These in-situ measurements confirm the presence of Sulphur (S) in the region unambiguously, something that was not feasible by the instruments onboard the orbiters," it said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Not only Sulphur (S), the LIBS also found the presence of aluminium&nbsp;(Al), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), and titanium (Ti) on the lunar surface.&nbsp;The quest for Hydrogen is underway.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The lunar Rover is currently on a 14-day mission to study the moon. Until now, the mission has achieved two of its objectives: a demonstration of a safe and soft landing on the lunar surface and the rover roving on the moon. Conducting&nbsp;in-situ scientific experiments is underway. &nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What is Vikram Lander?&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Vikram is the lander of the Chandrayaan-3 softly landed on the south pole of the moon carrying the Pragyan rover. <p>Giving an update, the space agency said that all payloads are performing normally.</p>

<p>The man spread fraudulent messages about ISRO without any actual involvement in the Chandrayaan-3 mission or other projects.</p>

<p>The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is over the Moon, quite literally, with the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 and orbiter of Chandrayaan-2 still revolving around Earth's only satellite. India became the first country to land on the Moon's south pole region successfully. ISRO, already a formidable name in space research and exploration now, has again etched its name among the elite space agencies in the world.</p>

<p>India is now is setting its sights on the next milestone, which is to launch a spacecraft to study the Sun. The mission, Aditya-L1, will seek to unravel secrets of the star nearest to planet Earth.</p>

<h2><strong>Why to study the Sun at all</strong></h2>

<p>We know that Sun is the reason we exist, survive and flourish. Earth and other planets in the Solar System were formed from stellar material that was left after formation of the Sun was complete. Sun not only formed the Earth but is responsible for the sustenance of life as well. All our energy sources eventually find connection with Sun.</p>

<p>In addition to its central role in the Solar System, the Sun also has an effect on interstellar medium, which is the extremely thin medium found between the stars. Charged particles given off by the Sun interact with the interstellar medium and give rise to phenomena such as heliosheath and heliopause.</p>

<p>Studying the Sun will not only give us insights into our immediate near-Earth space, but it also has a potential of&nbsp;improving our understanding of other stars in the Universe.</p>

<h2><strong>About Aditya-L1 mission</strong></h2>

<p>'Aditya' literally means the Sun in Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language. Aditya-L1 is going to be India's first space-based mission to study the Sun. The spacecraft, after launch will be placed in a halo orbit around Lagrange point L1 in space. This point is about 1.5 million kilometres from Earth.</p>

<p>There is major advantage in placing the observation spacecraft at the L1 point. The spacecraft, at this point, will be able to view the Sun without any occultation or eclipse. This will Aditya-L1 to observe solar activities and its effect on space weather in real-time.</p>

<p>Aditya-L1 will carry seven payloads to observe Sun's photosphere, chromosphere and corona, the outermost layer with the help of electromagnetic and particle and magnetic field detectors.</p>

<p>Sun constantly emits charged particles. Aditya-L1 will study these particles in-situ. ISRO says on its website that this will be "providing important scientific studies of the propagatory effect of solar dynamics in the interplanetary medium."</p>

<p>ISRO expects that Aditya-L1 payloads with give us important information which will lead to us understanding coronal heating, coronal mass ejection, pre-flare and flare activities and their characters.</p>

<h2><strong>What are Langrange points?</strong></h2>

<p>Lagrange points are five locations in space around the Earth where gravitational forces of the Earth and the Sun along with orbital motion of the spacecraft interact in order to create a stable location. These are called Lagrangian or 'L' points. These are named after 18th-century Italian astronomer and mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange.</p>

<p>The points are denoted as L1, L2, L3, L4 and L5.</p>

<h2><strong>So what are mission objectives of Aditya-L1?</strong></h2>

<p>The ambitious Aditya-L1 mission seeks to study several topics:</p>

	<li>It plans to study Sun's upper atmospheric (chromosphere and corona) dynamics.</li>
	<li>The mission will also study chromospheric and coronal heating, the physics of partially-ionised plasma, initiation of coronal mass ejections and flares.</li>
	<li>The mission will observe in-situ particle and plasma environment which will provide data for study of particle dynamics from the Sun.</li>
	<li>Aditya-L1 plans to&nbsp;study physics of solar corona and heating mechanism.</li>
	<li>ISRO will observe diagnostics of the coronal and coronal loop plasma. These include temperature, velocity and density.</li>
	<li>The mission will also study the development, dynamics and origin of CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections)</li>
	<li>Aditya-L1 will attempt to identify sequence of processes that occur at multiple layers of the Sun (chromosphere, base and extended corona). These processes eventual lead to solar eruptive events.</li>
	<li>The magnetic field topology and magnetic field measurements in the solar corona will also be studied.</li>
	<li>Aditya-L1 will observe and study drivers for space weather, that is, origin, composition and dynamics or solar wind.</li>
</ul>

<h2><strong>How will be Aditya-L1's journey?</strong></h2>

<p>Aditya-L1 will first be placed in a low earth orbit by ISRO's PSLV-C57 rocket. After that, the spacecraft's orbit will be made more elliptical. On-board propulsion will be used to launch the spacecraft towards L1 point. As it moves towards L1, the spacecraft will exit Earth's gravitational Sphere of Influence (SOI). After it exits the SOI, the spacecraft will begin its cruise phase. It will then be placed in a large halo orbit around the L1 point. The spacecraft will take four months to reach its destination.</p>

About Aditya-L1 mission 'Aditya' literally means the Sun in Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language. Aditya-L1 is going to be India's first space-based mission to study the Sun. Chandrayaan-3 profiled the soil of the South Pole of the moon and ISRO issued a statement saying that the Vikram Lander has confirmed the presence of Sulphur on the lunar surface near the South Pole.

<p>While conducting first-ever in-situ measurements on the elemental composition of the lunar surface, the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) instrument onboard the rover found sulphur.</p>

<p>"These in-situ measurements confirm the presence of Sulphur (S) in the region unambiguously, something that was not feasible by the instruments onboard the orbiters," it said.</p>

<p>Not only Sulphur, but the LIBS instrument also found the presence of aluminium&nbsp;(Al), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), and titanium (Ti) on the lunar surface.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Further measurements have revealed the presence of manganese (Mn), silicon (Si), and oxygen (O)," it said.</p>

<p>The rover is now conducting experiments to find the presence of hydrogen, ISRO said.</p>

<p>LIBS is a scientific technique that analyses the composition of materials by exposing them to intense laser pulses. A high-energy laser pulse is focused onto the surface of a material, such as a rock or soil. The laser pulse generates an extremely hot and localised plasma.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The collected plasma light is spectrally resolved and detected by detectors such as Charge Coupled Devices. Since each element emits a characteristic set of wavelengths of light when it's in a plasma state, the elemental composition of the material is determined.</p>

<h2><strong>Other discoveries made by Pragyan rover</strong></h2>

<p>India's Chandrayaan-3, since its successful landing on the Moon on August 23, has been making several ground-breaking discoveries. Apart from stumbling upon giant craters in the south polar region, the Pragyan rover has also found massive temperature variations on the lunar surface.</p>

<p>During its observation of lunar top soil, the rover's ChaSTE (Chandra's Surface Thermophysical Experiment) instrument found that the temperature on the surface of the Moon was around 50 degrees Celsius, and it increased to over 60 degrees at the height of 20mm. At minus 80mm depth, which is below the ground, the temperature dropped&nbsp;to minus 10 degrees Celsius.</p>

<p>The ChaSTE measures the temperature profile of the lunar topsoil around the pole&nbsp;to understand the thermal behaviour of the moon's surface. It has a temperature probe equipped with a controlled penetration mechanism capable of reaching a depth of 10 cm beneath the surface. The probe is fitted with 10 individual temperature sensors</p>

<p>The rover has so far traversed around 8 metres on the lunar surface since the lander landed and will continue to study the Moon's geology and atmosphere at&nbsp;the unexplored southern pole.&nbsp;</p>

Several Indian names are already there on the Moon. We have a Sarabhai crater on the Moon. Other countries have also named places related to their scientific accomplishment. <h2><strong>Why can no one own the Moon?</strong></h2>

<p>The Moon Treaty or the Outer Space Treaty was signed during the Cold War era, whose primary objective is "to provide the necessary legal principles for governing the behaviour of states, international organisations, and individuals who explore celestial bodies other than Earth, as well as administration of the resources that exploration may yield."</p>

<p>However, Article 2 of the Treaty states, "Outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means." In simple words, this means that the countries have to cooperate in their space exploration activities and cannot stake a claim to the Moon.</p>

<h2><strong>Who names the landing sites on the Moon?</strong></h2>

<p>The International Astronomical Union (IAU) founded in 1919 is the nodal body to standardise the nomenclature of celestial objects. Its tasks involve forcing an executive committee, divisions, commissions and working groups that comprise astronomers from across the world.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On naming the space surfaces, it says, "When the first images of the surface of a planet or satellite are obtained, new themes for naming features are chosen and names of a few important features are proposed, usually by the appropriate IAU Task Group in collaboration with the mission team."</p>

<p>After following the protocols, the IAU’s Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature (WGPSN) approves the proposed names and posts them on its website. Objections to the names can be raised by mailing the IAU General Secretary within three months.</p>

<p>However, this process can take some time. For example, China’s Moon mission Chang’e 5 landed on the lunar surface on 1 December 2020. The landing site was named Statio Titanchuan. The name was approved by the IAU in May 2021.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What are the norms for naming the sites?</strong></h2>

<p>The IAU made some suggestions while proposing the names. It stated that for planetary objects, the names should be simple, clear, unambiguous and should not copy existing names.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"No names having political, military or religious significance may be used, except for names of political figures prior to the 19th century."</p>

<p>"Commemoration of persons on planetary bodies should not normally be a goal in itself, but may be employed in special circumstances… Persons being so honoured must have been deceased for at least three years, before a proposal may be submitted."</p>

<h2><strong>Has India ever named sites on the Moon?</strong></h2>

<p>The answer to this question is yes. Before Chandrayaan-3 and 2, India named a site on the Moon. In 2008, following the Chandrayaan-1 probe that crashed, the spot was named “Jawahr Sthal” after the first Prime Minister of independent India Jawaharlal Nehru.&nbsp;</p>

<p>All eyes are on ISRO's Pragyaan rover which is on a 14-day exploration of the lunar surface. The rover will collect information and send it to the space agency. Notably, India has created history by becoming the first country to land a probe on the far side of the Moon.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"ChaSTE (Chandra's Surface Thermophysical Experiment) measures the temperature profile of the lunar topsoil around the pole, to understand the thermal behaviour of the moon's surface. It has a temperature probe equipped with a controlled penetration mechanism capable of reaching a depth of 10 cm beneath the surface. The probe is fitted with 10 individual temperature sensors" ISRO said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA's Diviner Lunar Radiometer, on-board the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has been mapping the moon's temperature since 2009.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to NASA, lunar daytime temperatures near the equator reach a 120 degrees Centigrade, while nighttime temperatures get to minus 130 degrees Centigrade. The Moon’s poles are even colder.</p>

<p>NASA's equipment even found a place in the floor of the Moon’s Hermite Crater that was detected to be minus 250degrees Centigrade, making it the coldest temperature measured anywhere in the solar system.<br />

Extremely cold regions similar to the one in Hermite Crater were found at the bottoms of several permanently shadowed craters at the lunar south pole and were measured in the depths of winter night, says NASA.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, India's Chandrayaan-3 is the first to land near the mysterious Lunar south pole and is expected to carry out its operations for two weeks on earth (one Lunar day), starting 23<sup>rd</sup>&nbsp;August.</p>

<p>The mission has a designed life of 14 earth days or one lunar day, as it is powered by solar energy that it harnessed during the Lunar day.</p>

<p>Notably, Russia's Luna-25, which was supposed to land near the Lunar south pole carried a Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (simply put, a kind of nuclear battery) that could provide heat and power to the Russian lander for at least one year on earth(26 Lunar days and nights).</p>

<p>However, Luna-25 had crash landed before it could reach its final pre-landing orbit and could commence its soft-landing attempt.<br />

The mission has a designed life of 14 earth days or one lunar day, as it is powered by solar energy that it harnessed during the Lunar day. Notably, Russia's Luna-25, which was supposed to land near the Lunar south pole carried a Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (simply put, a kind of nuclear battery) that could provide heat and power to the Russian lander for at least one year on earth(26 Lunar days and nights). However, Luna-25 had crash landed before it could reach its final pre-landing orbit and could commence its soft-landing attempt. <p>India entered record books as the first country to successfully place a lander on the moon's uncharted South Police on Wednesday, last week.</p>

<p>The successful conduct of what was the maiden lunar landing mission of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) also put India in an elite club of nations featuring the US, Russia and China.&nbsp;</p>

It wants to break new grounds regardless of the circumstances," PM Modi said.</p>

<p>He further said a discussion on India's maiden lunar landing mission would struggle to do justice to the enormity of its success.</p>

<p>"The success of Chandrayaan-3 has seen the entire country immerse itself in unbridled celebrations. It has been more than three days since our lunar lander, 'Vikram', touched down on the moon's surface. Such is the enormity of the mission's success that any discussion on it seems futile," PM Modi said.</p>

<p>On the key role played by ISRO's women scientists in the successful conduct of the daunting lunar landing mission, PM Modi said the mission is a “classic illustration of women power”, adding that India's daughters are not only shattering glass ceilings but also challenging Space, which is considered ‘infinite.’</p>

<p>“India's Mission Chandrayaan is a classic illustration of our women power. Many women scientists and engineers were directly involved with this mission. They handled vital responsibilities such as those of a project director and project manager," he said.</p>

<p>“Our daughters are even challenging the limitless Space. When the daughters of a country chase such big dreams, is there any force that can stop them or the country from making forward strides?" PM Modi added.</p>

<p>Earlier, on Saturday, PM Modi announced that August 23 will, henceforth, be celebrated as 'National Space Day' to mark the success of India's maiden lunar landing mission.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He also announced that the spot on the lunar South Pole where the Vikram lander touched down would be called the ‘Shiv Shakti Point' while the spot on the moon's surface where the Chandrayaan-2 left its mark would be known as the 'Tiranga Point'.</p>

<p>"This mission will be a source of inspiration for every effort that goes into taking this country forward in the coming days. It will remind us that a failure isn't the end of the world," PM Modi said.</p>

<p>On Saturday, PM Modi interacted with the women scientists of the ISRO, who were involved in the 'Chandrayaan-3' project, commending the key role they played in the successful culmination of India's maiden lunar landing mission.&nbsp;</p>

Since we now have "Har Ghar Tiranga" and the Tiranga is even there on the Moon, it is only apt to name the point 'Tiranga Point' - India's first contact with the surface of the Moon," PM Modi announced.</p>

<p>After the successful soft-landing of India's Chandrayaan-3 on the south pole of the Moon, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Friday (Aug 24) shared the first&nbsp;video of the Pragyan&nbsp;rover rolling out of the Vikram lander.</p>

<p>The video comes hours after India's third lunar mission made history by being the first to land on the lunar south pole.</p>

<p><strong>Pragyan Rover:</strong></p>

<p>Pragyan is an Indian lunar rover, which is a part of Chandrayaan-3 that recently landed on the moon's south pole. It is the first of its kind to be deployed on the moon's south pole.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It has a mass of almost 27 kg and is about the size of a microwave oven, designed to travel up to 500 metres on the moon's surface. It will conduct experiments on the moon's geology, mineralogy and atmosphere.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The rover is equipped with stereoscopic camera-based 3D visions to provide the ground control team with a 3D video of the surrounding terrain.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shortly after the landing, the space agency said that communication with Vikram Lander had been established and soon shared several images of the lunar surface taken by the Lander's Horizontal Velocity Camera captured during the descent.</p>

<p><strong>What happens now?</strong></p>

<p>The rover is expected to conduct an on-site analysis of the lunar surface. Both the lander and the rover have scientific payloads to carry out the experiments.</p>

<p>The mission has already completed two of its objectives which are,&nbsp;a soft landing on the moon's south pole and placing the rover on the Moon. Now it aims to stay on the lunar surface for 1 Lunar day or 14 Earth days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After 14 days, Vikram Lander and Pragyan could live&nbsp;longer&nbsp;if they survive the lunar night.</p>

It has a mass of almost 27 kg and is about the size of a microwave oven, designed to travel up to 500 metres on the moon's surface. It will conduct experiments on the moon's geology, mineralogy and atmosphere. UK journalist faces backlash for 'don't come for foreign aid' jibe on Chandrayaan-3 success

<p>India’s successful Chandrayan-3 mission drew widespread applause from across the world as it became the first country to achieve soft-landing in the southern pole of the Moon.</p>

<p>Foreign media extensively covered India’s historic feat as the whole mission was considered to be extremely difficult to execute.</p>

<p>The fact that no other country was able to put its satellite on the dark side of the Moon and that Russia’s Luna-25 mission failed to achieve a similar goal just days before had millions of people on the edge of their seats.</p>

<p>The mission was also much talked about at the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, which is being attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.</p>

<p>The rover will stay on the lunar surface for one&nbsp;Lunar day or 14 Earth days.</p>

<p>Though Vikram and Pragyan have a planned mission life of one&nbsp;lunar day, there is a possibility that the duo could live longer.</p>

<p>ISRO has designed its lander and rover to harness solar power and charge its onboard batteries, but that would be possible only during the lunar day.</p>

<p>After lunar day, comes lunar night for 14 days when temperatures drop severely and go well below -150ºC. If the lander and rover survive the lunar night (14.75 Earth days), it might be possible for them to get revived when the lunar day breaks and solar power is available.</p>

‘India's Modi out of this world’: PM, Brazil’s Lula read South African paper on Chandrayaan-3

<p>India on Wednesday (August 23) achieved a historic feat by soft-landing its Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon, becoming the first nation in the world to land a spacecraft on&nbsp;the Lunar South Pole. India’s success soon took the world by storm, including its arch-rival Pakistan.</p>

<p>For a change, Pakistanis have reacted jubilantly to India’s achievement this time around. From mocking the failure of India’s Chandrayaan-2 in 2019 to heaping praises on Chandrayaan-3, they have really come a long way.</p>

<p>For instance, Pakistan’s ex-minister of information and broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry recommended the country’s government televise the event live on national television. In 2019, he had mocked India saying that it was “not wise to venture into an unknown territory”. He had also used the hashtag ‘India Failed’ in his post on X, formerly Twitter.</p>

<p>But of all, the reaction by one witty Pakistani is garnering much attention in India. When one Pakistani YouTuber reached out to him seeking his comments on India’s success on the Moon, he quipped that he&nbsp;was already living on the Moon.&nbsp;</p>

India’s success soon took the world by storm, including its arch-rival Pakistan. For a change, Pakistanis have reacted jubilantly to India’s achievement this time around. From mocking the failure of India’s Chandrayaan-2 in 2019 to heaping praises on Chandrayaan-3, they have really come a long way. For instance, Pakistan’s ex-minister of information and broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry recommended the country’s government televise the event live on national television. In 2019, he had mocked India saying that it was “not wise to venture into an unknown territory”. He had also used the hashtag ‘India Failed’ in his post on X, formerly Twitter. But of all, the reaction by one witty Pakistani is garnering much attention in India. When one Pakistani YouTuber reached out to him seeking his comments on India’s success on the Moon, he quipped that he was already living on the Moon. In his words, both lacked basic necessities, including water, (cooking) gas, and electricity. He hilariously implied that Pakistanis need not spend millions to reach the Moon as they were already enduring Moon-like conditions in their nation.
