<p>Bill Murray, a long-time collaborator of the "Broken Flowers" filmmaker, Adam Driver and Chloe Sevigny star as cops fighting off the growing army of undead, with pop star Selena Gomez and actress Tilda Swinton also among the stellar line-up.</p>

<p>A darling of U.S. art house filmmaking and a Cannes veteran, Jarmusch nonetheless came up against the French festival's tough crowd, drawing a mixed bag of reviews with some lamenting a sluggish pace despite some spot-on jokes.</p>

<p>Laden with witty film references - including nods to George Romero's cult 1968 zombie-fest "Night Of The Living Dead" - the film plays with the artifice of movie-making, with self-aware moments where actors discuss its plotline.</p>

<p>Some critics took issue with the more self-indulgent moments, however.</p>

<p>"Jarmusch's movie is in danger of succumbing to a zombie-ism of its own: a narcotic torpor of self-aware coolness," the Guardian's Peter Bradshaw wrote, describing the film as a "droll if directionless riff."</p>

<p>Others said Jarmusch had done little to refresh a much-exploited genre, even if gags like Iggy Pop's coffee-guzzling zombie and a horde of undead stalking the streets in search of a Wi-Fi connection raised chuckles.</p>

<p>According to The Hollywood Reporter, the drama which is being directed by Andrew Levitas witnesses Depp essaying the character of acclaimed war photographer W Eugene Smith.</p>

<p>Directed from a screenplay by David K&nbsp;Kessler, who adapted the book by Smith and his wife, Aileen Mioko Smith. The film also stars Bill Nighy, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Ryo Kase and Jun Kunimura.</p>

<p>The redemptive thriller sees Smith (essayed by Depp) take on a powerful corporation responsible for poisoning the people of Minamata, Japan, in 1971. With the glory days of World War II far behind him, Smith has become a recluse, disconnected from society and his career. But an old friend and a commission from Life magazine editor (Nighy) convinces him to journey back to Japan to expose a big story: the devastating annihilation of a coastal community.</p>

<p>Depp is producing the drama via his Infinitum Nihil banner, along with Sam Sarkar and Levitas under his Metalwork Pictures banner and Gabrielle Tana.</p>

<p>Jason Forman, Stephen Deuters, Peter Watson, Phil Hunt, Compton Ross, Gabrielle Stewart, Stephen Spence, Peter Touche, Norman Merry, Kevan Van Thompson and Peter Hampden are executive producers.</p>

<p>Bill Murray fighting off zombies and an Elton John biopic tracking the singer's early days will be among the highlights at this year's Cannes Film Festival, though Quentin Tarantino's hotly-anticipated latest outing looked set to miss out.</p>

<p>Unveiling the line-up for the 72nd edition of the cinema showcase, festival director Thierry Fremaux described the selection as a "romantic and political" mix highlighting a colourful array of characters, from the walking dead to painters and migrants.</p>

<p>One major name not to make the list, however, was Tarantino, whose 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood'&nbsp;was hotly tipped to make it to the festival, held in May on the French Riviera.</p>

<p>The movie, starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie, was still in post-production, organisers said.</p>

<p>"Quentin Tarantino's film is not ready...but he is sprinting" to finish it, Fremaux told a news conference, adding there was a slim chance it could yet make the line-up.</p>

<p>"I wish him luck, I wish him to be ready, I wish above all that he will make a beautiful film, what I've seen of it so far is magnificent," Fremaux said.</p>

<p>The May 14-25 festival will kick off with U.S. director Jim Jarmusch's latest film, "The Dead Don't Die".</p>

<p>One of the 19 contenders for the Palme D'Or top prize, the tale of a small town under siege from zombies boasts a star-studded cast including Murray, Tilda Swinton, Iggy Pop, Danny Glover and Selena Gomez.</p>

<p>Spanish director Pedro Almodovar - who presided over the jury at Cannes two years ago, a spot handed this year to Mexico's Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu - will also be in contention for the top award with "Pain and Glory".</p>

<p>The movie, which reunites actors Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, tracks the travails of a filmmaker.</p>

<p>Britain's Ken Loach, 82, who won the Palme D'Or in 2016 with 'I, Daniel Blake', returns with 'Sorry We Missed You'.</p>

<p>Terrence Malick will also enter the competition with 'A Hidden Life', set against the backdrop of World War Two.</p>

<p>Newcomers in contention include France's Justine Triet with 'Sibyl'&nbsp;and Senegalese-French director Mati Diop's 'Atlantique.'</p>

<p>NETFLIX ABSENT</p>

<p>As last year, Netflix films will be conspicuously absent from Cannes, with the online streaming and media group at odds with the festival over its rules requiring productions to be shown in French cinemas.</p>

<p>Organisers said that no Netflix films were ready in time for the festival this year in any case, and the requirements had not yet shifted, though the battle was forcing the industry to rethink.</p>

<p>"We're watching this space, there's a fundamental change happening in our habits," festival president Pierre Lescure said. "In 3-5 years from now, we won't be able to have a one-size-fits-all approach for all films. We're going to have to find more flexible, innovative rules."</p>

<p>Outside the competition, Elton John biopic 'Rocketman', starring Taron Egerton, will be one of the highlights of the screenings, with the singer set to attend.</p>

<p>South Korean director Lee Won-Tae's 'The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil'&nbsp;was picked for a special midnight showing.</p>

<p>Fremaux said there was a common thread in the selected films: "These are films about little groups of humans who are fighting adversity."</p>

<p>The festival will pay tribute to French film pioneer Agnes Varda, an influential force behind the New Wave movement who died in March and features on the event's poster.</p>

<p>The story is based on the life of the Indo-Pakistani author, Saddat Hassan Manto in the post-independence period.</p>

<p>Rasika plays the role of Manto’s wife, Safia and the film premiered to a packed audience at Cannes who lauded the lead pair's performance.</p>

<p>Nandita’s pet project also stars Rajshri Deshpande as the celebrated author, Ismat Chugtai and the movie has&nbsp;guest appearances of several actors including Shabana Azmi, Purab Kohli, and Chandan Roy Sanyal.</p>

<p>Rasika, who had to do a great deal of preparation for her role as the noted author’s wife, recently revealed that she did not require any prosthetics or makeup to look like Safia.</p>

<p>The stylists made sure that the clothes and hairstyle from that era would be enough to give viewers an authentic replication of a real-life person, in a respectful manner. Interestingly the results of her look are more than uncanny as when compared to images of the real-life Safia.</p>

<p>All this was managed to be achieved without any use of heavy makeup or prosthetics. It’s a usual practice in several real-life stories and biopics for makers to resort to the art of makeup to make the actors come as close as possible to looking their real people.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking about the process, Rasika said "Srikant and his team did a fabulous job of designing the look of the characters. On most days I shot with no makeup.&nbsp;The team just found ways to tweak small things to show a change in the look over the years, since the story of the film is over six years and Manto and Safia go through a lot in those years.&nbsp;They are the tiniest of changes but, in my opinion, make a strong impact and affect the look of the character. And also really helped enhance the performance.&nbsp;We really didn't use any makeup or prosthetics. But the smallest of details were looked into by Nandita."&nbsp;<br />

<p>Directed by Iranian-born Ali Abbasi and co-written by John Ajvide Lindqvist, the author of Swedish vampire movie "Let the Right One In", "Border" entertained and baffled audiences at the festival which closes on Saturday.</p>

<p>It is the story of Tina, a strange-looking Swedish customs officer who finds herself drawn to a similarly odd man, Vore, and discovers an uncomfortable truth about her own identity.</p>

<p>Variety critic Alissa Simon called it an "exciting, intelligent mix of romance, Nordic noir, social realism and supernatural horror that defies and subverts genre conventions".</p>

<p>Lead actress Eva Melander said: "It’s a very unpredictable story and people watching it are really touched by it. They go out from the cinema and they kind of forget their mobile phone and wonder: 'What’s this and what did I just see?'".</p>

<p>Un Certain Regard is the second-tier competition at Cannes, which closes on Saturday with the award of the Palme d`Or and other prizes for the films in the main selection.</p>

<p>Their story is told in "Beyond the Raging Sea", a documentary presented at the Cannes Film Festival about the doomed attempt by mountaineer Omar Samra and professional triathlete Omar Nour, both Egyptians, to complete the 3,000-mile (4,800 km) Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.</p>

<p>After their rowing boat is flipped over by giant waves, the men are left with nothing but a malfunctioning inflatable lifeboat and no way of knowing that their location device had failed, making it unlikely they would be found in the middle of the ocean.</p>

<p>The film uses footage filmed by the two men and by their eventual rescuers - the crew of a passing cargo ship. Produced in association with the U.N. High Commission for Refugees, it compares the pair`s adventure with the risks taken by hundreds of thousands of migrants every year.</p>

<p>"For 13 hours we were in their shoes," Samra told Reuters in an interview.&nbsp;"We only experienced a fraction of what refugees go through and these things happen on a weekly basis."</p>

<p>Director Marco Orsini hopes the film will bring public attention back to the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean, by getting the audience to root for the two Omars` survival and then showing news footage of migrant rescues.</p>

<p>"After time, after so much footage of dead bodies washing up on the shores ... you just become desensitized to the whole issue," he said.</p>

<p>"I realise that this film can have an impact on people, on how they view the plight of refugees, and that’s what it’s all about.”</p>

<p>On the Asian films In Competition, the jury member, Chinese actor Zhang Zhen said he has a completely open mind.</p>

<p>"I am going to watch all of the films from the different countries and regions of Asia and try to explain our values to the other members of the Jury," he said.</p>

<p>This year, China`s cinema is represented in the official competition by "Ash is purest white" of Jia Zhangke who was a member of the Official Selection Jury at the 67th Cannes Film Festival in May 2014.</p>

<p>"Ash is purest white" tells the story of a young and pretty dancer, Qiao, in Datong in 2001, who is in love with Bin, a local gangster. Qiao will take Bin`s defense during a clash between gangs, and is sentenced to 5 years in prison. Upon leaving, Qiao goes in search of Bin to start all over again.</p>

<p>Altogether 21 films are competing for the top prize of Cannes International Film Festival which runs from May 8 to 19.</p>

Cannes 2018: Film festival opens with Asghar Farhadi's film

<p>In a first, Michelin star chef Vikas Khanna has taken his directorial debut film “The Last Color” to coveted film festival Cannes this year. The chef cum filmmaker unveiled the first look of his film today.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an email interview to IANS, Vikas wrote: "The film is about girl education and girl empowerment. I had written the (similarly titled) short story in 2011 when I was shooting in Vrindavan where I was researching around "UTSAV"&nbsp;(his culinary epic of Indian festivals).”</p>

<p>He explained his choice of theme and wrote: "More than the Holi celebrations, I was drawn to stories of some widows who were not playing Holi. I imagined, in my short story, the glorious day when their hope and faith will be filled with colours. In 2012, I saw on the American Yahoo homepage the stunning images filled with emotions when they played Holi. There were a million sentiments in those images, especially the one in which an elderly woman was lying on a ground smeared with colours. She was laughing and crying at the same time. That's when I turned my short story into a novel. But the visits to the ashrams of Vrindavan and Varanasi gave me more stories for this celebration.”</p>

<p>His film, "The Last Color"&nbsp;is currently in post-production and will first make an appearance at the film festivals before it gets released.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This film took a toll on the Iranian director Jafar Panahi who suffered at the behest of his film. His government imposed a 20-year filmmaking ban and placed him under house arrest as they convicted him of creating "propaganda against the system". Competing for the <em>Palme d'Or</em>, this film takes us through the adventures of three Iranian actresses at different stages in their careers.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Under the Silver Lake</strong></p>

<p>From the company that delivered critically acclaimed films like “Moonlight”, “Ex Machina” and “Lady Bird”, “Under the Silver Lake” is a movie set in the underworld of hipster Los Angeles. In the film, Riley Keough vanishes and his neighbour Sam (Andrew Garfield) sets out to find her -- establishing the mysterious circumstances that led to her disappearance.&nbsp;</p>

Cannes Film Festival 2018: 5 films to watch out for this year!

<p>A delegation led by &nbspInformation and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani will promote regional cinema at Cannes Film Festival this year. National Award-winning films from Assam, Kerala, West Bengal and Lakshadweep will be showcased by the contingent as they will push for their distribution and exhibition in the global market.</p>

<p>The prestigious film jamboree, where Nandita Das` "Manto" and Rohena Gera`s "Sir" are in separate competition sections, will get under way in the French Riviera on Tuesday.</p>

<p>Assamese film "Village Rockstars", Malayalam film "Bhayanakam", Bengali movie "Nagarkirtan", and "Sinjar", a film from Lakshadweep made in the Jasari language, will be showcased at the festival`s India Pavilion, organised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting along with Ficci.</p>

<p>"With a strong Indian delegation at the festival, we are positive that the world will see the diversity of our cinema and the exceptional cinematic talent our country possesses," Leena Jaisani, Assistant Secretary General, Ficci, told a news agency.</p>

<p>Irani, who has been persistent in drawing attention to the need to celebrate the country`s regional cinema, will inaugurate the India Pavilion on Wednesday.</p>

<p>The other delegates will include Ashok Kumar Parmar, Joint Secretary (Films), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Vinod K. Jacob, Joint Secretary, (ED), Ministry of External Affairs Censor Board Chairperson Prasoon Joshi, Censor Board member Vani Tripathi Tikoo, filmmakers Shaji N. Karun, Jahnu Barua and Bharat Bala, as well as actress Parvathy.</p>

<p>Tikoo feels the domestic boundaries within Indian cinema need to go.&nbsp</p>

<p>"It`s either good or bad cinema. The thrust has to be on Indian cinema as good narratives are coming from every region," Tikoo told IANS, adding that it`s high time that as one of the largest film producing nations in the world, "we start respecting our cinema".</p>

<p>She rued how films from languages other than Hindi find relevance within India after gaining "olive branches", referring to the laurel wreaths that movies flaunt after touring international film festivals.</p>

<p>"It should be the reverse," averred Tikoo, who said the idea behind taking such titles to Cannes -- "the largest film market" -- is to ease the struggle a bit for films which have fantastic narratives, but find it hard to get the right exhibition platform.</p>

<p>Bala, known for patriotic videos like "Vande Mataram" and "Jana Gana Mana", pointed out that in the last several years, most Indian films which have got a positioning at foreign fests are regional titles.</p>

<p>"With the presence at Cannes Film Festival, the idea is to get them into the market, find a larger distribution stream and to work on existing co-production treaties," Bala was quoted as saying to a news agency</p>

<p>Actress Rasika Dugal, who will be in Cannes for "Manto", finds it a great initiative.</p>

<p>"There`s a lot of beautiful work happening in films in different parts of India which we don`t hear about... We either get to see it at a film festival or through a friend... So, I think it`s high time it gets a push," Rasika said.</p>

<p>The films apart, the delegation`s focus will be on leveraging co-productions with the countries with which India has co-production treaties, along with the other potential countries, promote ease of film shooting in India and position the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) at festival circuits.</p>

An Indian delegation will showcase National award-winning regional films at the festival.

A delegation led by &nbspInformation and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani will promote regional cinema at Cannes Film Festival this year. National Award-winning films from Assam, Kerala, West Bengal and Lakshadweep will be showcased by the contingent as they will push for their distribution and exhibition in the global market. The prestigious film jamboree, where Nandita Das` "Manto" and Rohena Gera`s "Sir" are in separate competition sections, will get under way in the French Riviera on Tuesday. Assamese film "Village Rockstars", Malayalam film "Bhayanakam", Bengali movie "Nagarkirtan", and "Sinjar", a film from Lakshadweep made in the Jasari language, will be showcased at the festival`s India Pavilion, organised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting along with Ficci. "With a strong Indian delegation at the festival, we are positive that the world will see the diversity of our cinema and the exceptional cinematic talent our country possesses," Leena Jaisani, Assistant Secretary General, Ficci, told a news agency. Irani, who has been persistent in drawing attention to the need to celebrate the country`s regional cinema, will inaugurate the India Pavilion on Wednesday. The other delegates will include Ashok Kumar Parmar, Joint Secretary (Films), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Vinod K. Jacob, Joint Secretary, (ED), Ministry of External Affairs Censor Board Chairperson Prasoon Joshi, Censor Board member Vani Tripathi Tikoo, filmmakers Shaji N. Karun, Jahnu Barua and Bharat Bala, as well as actress Parvathy. Tikoo feels the domestic boundaries within Indian cinema need to go. "It`s either good or bad cinema. The thrust has to be on Indian cinema as good narratives are coming from every region," Tikoo told IANS, adding that it`s high time that as one of the largest film producing nations in the world, "we start respecting our cinema". She rued how films from languages other than Hindi find relevance within India after gaining "olive branches", referring to the laurel wreaths that movies flaunt after touring international film festivals. "It should be the reverse," averred Tikoo, who said the idea behind taking such titles to Cannes -- "the largest film market" -- is to ease the struggle a bit for films which have fantastic narratives, but find it hard to get the right exhibition platform. Bala, known for patriotic videos like "Vande Mataram" and "Jana Gana Mana", pointed out that in the last several years, most Indian films which have got a positioning at foreign fests are regional titles. "With the presence at Cannes Film Festival, the idea is to get them into the market, find a larger distribution stream and to work on existing co-production treaties," Bala was quoted as saying to a news agency Actress Rasika Dugal, who will be in Cannes for "Manto", finds it a great initiative. "There`s a lot of beautiful work happening in films in different parts of India which we don`t hear about... We either get to see it at a film festival or through a friend... So, I think it`s high time it gets a push," Rasika said. The films apart, the delegation`s focus will be on leveraging co-productions with the countries with which India has co-production treaties, along with the other potential countries, promote ease of film shooting in India and position the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) at festival circuits.
