<p>As with all the<em> Mad Max</em>&nbsp;films, road battles and visceral stunts play a vital role, with a plethora of retro-futuristic vehicles meting out death and destruction at high speed in the desert.</p>

<p>The movie -- released globally next week -- was inspired by the question "How can we tell a story on the run?" explained Miller.</p>

<p>Stunts are "pure cinema for me," he told journalists before the world premiere.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Alyla Browne (T<em>hree Thousand Years of Longing) </em>portrays a child version of the heroine, before Taylor-Joy takes over as a fearsome young adult warrior who is as adept behind the wheel as she is deadly with a rifle.</p>

<p>Hemsworth dons heavy prosthetics for his role as a barbarian clan leader, in a film that is part revenge movie, part dystopian sci-fi, complete with themes of ecological collapse -- and feminism.</p>

<p>Veteran Hollywood filmmaker Martin Scorsese has backed a petition against the jailing of prominent Iranian movie director Saeed Roustaee for screening a film at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022.</p>

<p>Scorsese, the Oscar-winning director of <em>Taxi Driver</em> and <em>Goodfellas</em>, reposted a campaign launched by his daughter Francesca this week after news of Roustaee's prison sentence came to light. "Please sign this petition to bring justice to Saeed," Scorsese wrote on Instagram.</p>

<p>Roustaee was sentenced to six months in prison for the screening of his film <em>Leila's Brothers</em> at the Cannes Festival last year. The film recounts the economic struggle of a family in Tehran. It was banned from screening in Iran.<br />

Roustaee and the movie's producer, Javad Noruzbegi, were found guilty of "contributing to the propaganda of the opposition against the Islamic system," Iranian reformist daily Etemad said.</p>

<p>The sentence includes a ban on working for five years. The filmmakers will only serve about nine days in prison, while the remainder "will be suspended over five years," according to Etemad, which added the verdict can be appealed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In her petition, Francesca Scorsese, an actor and director, wrote, &nbsp;"We now have less than 20 DAYS to help garner enough attention to appeal his sentence."</p>

<p>She urged supporters to sign so that Roustaee "can continue to be a force of good in the world."</p>

<p>The petition was two-thirds of the way to reaching its 15,000-signature target Thursday.</p>

<p>The 48-year-old director won the Cannes’ Palme d’Or for best film last year for <em>Triangle of Sadness</em>, a capitalism satire starring Woody Harrelson, Harris Dickinson, Dolly De Leon and the late Charlbi Dean.</p>

<p>The film left audiences squirming over its biting exploration of class divisions on a cruise ship and extended display of extreme sea sickness. The movie also earned him three nominations, for best picture, best director and best original screenplay, at next month's Oscars.</p>

<p>Ostlund first won the Palme in 2017 for the art world satire <em>The Square</em>. The film had a similarly cringe-inducing look at the art world.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is the third time a two-time Palme winner has led the jury in Cannes, following Francis Ford Coppola and Emir Kusturica, and the first time it has gone to someone the year after they won.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After Toronto and Cannes Film Festivals, the Berlin International Film Festival has condemned the arrest of Iranian actress Taraneh Alidoosti and has expressed solidarity with the people of Iran "fighting for their rights" in the ongoing protests triggered by the tragic death of Mahsa Amini in custody.</p>

<p>The 38-year-old was taken into custody on Saturday "by order of the judicial authority" as she "did not provide documentation for some of her claims" about the ongoing protests.&nbsp;A week prior to her arrest, she had shared a post on Instagram expressing solidarity with Mohsen Shekari, the first man executed for crimes allegedly committed during the&nbsp;protests.</p>

<p>The actress, who is best known for her role in the Oscar-winning 2016 film 'The Salesman', was arrested by local authorities on charges of "spreading falsehoods" about the ongoing demonstrations in Iran.</p>

<p>On Monday evening, the Berlin International Film Festival shared a statement, which read,&nbsp;"This weekend, Iranian authorities have arrested Taraneh Alidoosti, one of the country's most famous actors and a guest of the festival several times, after she publicly showed solidarity with the recently executed protester Mohsen Shekari in an Instagram post. Before that, the actor had - like many others - posted a picture of herself where she is not wearing a hijab and holding a sign reading the slogan that has been most frequently used in the fight against the Iranian regime, 'women, life, freedom'."</p>

<p>A Japanese filmmaker is shaking Cannes film audiences to the core with a dystopian vision of her country in which old people agree to be euthanised to solve the challenge of a rapidly ageing population.</p>

<p>'Plan 75'&nbsp;by Japanese director and writer Chie Hayakawa is based on a very real problem.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Japan is the most rapidly-ageing industrial society, a trend that is causing huge economic and political problems as a dwindling number of younger people must support a growing army of the old.</p>

<p>Close to 30 percent of Japan's population is over 65, the majority women, and that rate is expected to continue rising in the coming decades.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the movie, anybody over 75 is encouraged to sign up for a deal with the government by which they receive a sum of money in return for agreeing to be euthanised. A collective funeral is thrown in for free.</p>

<p>"When I was young, a long life was considered to be a good thing, people had respect for older people. That's no longer the case," the 45-year-old director added.</p>

<p>'Plan 75', Hayakawa's first full-length feature film, is full of slow sequences with minimal camera movement.</p>

<p>"I wanted the images to be aesthetic and beautiful, as well as cold and cruel, just like the plan itself," she said.</p>

<p>Asked how close to today's Japanese reality her scenario is, Hayakawa quickly answered "eight out of 10".</p>

<p>"If such a plan was on the table today, I believe that many people would accept it, even welcome it as a viable solution," she said.</p>

<p>"Most young people worry already what the end of their life will look like. Will their basic needs be met? Can they survive once they live alone? Can they afford to age?" she said.</p>

<p>This year India is at the centre of glory at the Cannes as it has been chosen `Country of Honour`at Marche du Cinema. A delegation of celebrities including filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, Ricky Kej, Prasoon Joshi, folk singer Mame Khan and actors Nawazuddin Siddiqui, R Madhavan, Pooja Hegde and Tamannaah Bhatia among others are representing India’s content prowess at the international stage.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, speaking at the inaugural event of the India Pavilion, Deepika expressed immense pride in representing India at the 75th edition of the Cannes Film festival as one of the jury members and how Indian cinema has come a long way. "We have the talent, we have the ability and I think we just sort of need that conviction and I truly believe there will come a day when India won`t be at Cannes, Cannes would be at India," the actress said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Indian Union minister Anurag Thakur speaking at the event said India wants to become the global content hub of the world and invited the world to the International film Festival of India. "We'll do whatever we can to make India the content hub of the world &amp; to make India the destination of the world for filmmaking, film production &amp; post-production. I extend an open invitation to all to be part of IFFI Goa 2022,” he said.&nbsp;</p>
