But the claims had put the prime minister under pressure from opposition legislators and he set up a commission into the alleged foreign interference, including by India.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

New Delhi had strongly rejected alleged linkage to the democratic process of Canada. India's foreign ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, even accused Canada of meddling in India's internal affairs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We have seen media reports, Canadian Commission inquiring into foreign interferences...we strongly reject such baseless allegations of Indian interference in Canadian elections, it is not govt of India's policy to interfere in the democratic process of other countries, in fact, quite on the reverse it is Canada who has been interfering in our internal affairs," Jaiswal said&nbsp;in February's presser.&nbsp;

Reuters reports that the Canadian leader set up the commission to look into foreign interference under pressure from opposition leaders about media reports alleging Chinese interference.

China has denied the allegation.

"State actors are able to conduct foreign interference successfully in Canada because there are few legal or political consequences. FI is therefore low-risk and high-reward," said CSIS.

<h2>Not done enough</h2>

Intelligence analysts and the Conservatives blame Trudeau's government for not doing enough to combat Chinese interference.&nbsp;

The PM is due to testify in front of the commission on Wednesday.

Canada, as per the official 2021 census, is home to around 1.7 million people of Chinese descent — just under five per cent of the nation's population.&nbsp;

On Monday morning, people dressed up as the sun gathered on a Niagara City Cruise to break the world record.&nbsp;

The previous record was set on December 20, 2020, when 287 people in the Chinese city of Guangzhou dressed as the sun.&nbsp;

The participants included guests and their family members who attended the awarding ceremony of the 10th Children’s Drawing Competition held by China Life Insurance Company, according to the Guinness World Record.&nbsp;

Canada-based CBC News claimed that 27 events — five extortions, 15 arsons, and seven firearms offences — are linked to a criminal gang in India which uses local operatives. WION could not independently verify these claims.&nbsp;

Staff Sgt. Dave Paton had said that six youths have been arrested and charged in connection with these crimes.

He further said that the gang operates through WhatsApp calls.

Prominent Indian-Canadian figures such as Member of Parliament Tim Uppal, Mayor Amarjeet Singh Sohi, Radio India’s Managing Director Maninder Gill, and Gursharan Singh Butter have expressed their condolences and solidarity with the affected families after Monday's killings.

Canada's population reached a record high of 40.77 million in 2023. This surge, according to Statistics Canada, was mainly driven by temporary immigration.&nbsp;

As per recently published data, in 2023, the country added 1.27 million people to its population — up 3.2 per cent from the previous year. This just so happens to be Canada's highest growth since 1957.

Despite that, Indians continue to be the largest group of immigrants, making up for a significant portion of the estimated 2,661,784 non-permanent residents living in Canada as of January 1, 2024.

As per the latest Statscan data, 2,332,886 of these were permit holders and their family members, and 328,898 were asylum claimants with or without work or study permits.
