Engineering is essentially problem-solving. And problem-solving may not always involve attacking the issue with fancy, expensive machinery, but it needs out-of-the-box thinking. Such thinking may have been on display as 700 soap bars were (probably) taken out of the box and used to move an iconic hotel building that weighed 220 tonnes.

The unique solution was employed in the case of the hotel located in Halifax in Canada. The building in question was built in 1826 and was later converted into the Victorian Elmwood Hotel. There were plans to demolish the structure in the year 2018. However, the historic building was purchased by a real-estate company, Galaxy Properties. The company planned to move the hotel building to a new location. Multiple media reports have said that the company plans to connect the building to a new apartment that will be constructed.

Unique solution to a problem

The biggest problem was to move the entire structure safely without any harm to it. The responsibility was reportedly undertaken by S Rushton Construction- House Moving Experts.

For a smooth shift, the company used 700 Ivory soaps so that the building would gently glide over making use of the softness provided by the soaps. The soaps were used along with two large excavators and a wrecker.

The company has posted a time-lapse video of the entire operation on Facebook.

“The historic Elmwood hotel in South End Halifax, made its first journey in almost 200 years, but not its last. After weeks of preparation, the move of approx 30 feet went as smoothly as..... soap. About 700 bars of it,” it said in its Facebook post.

The dream of making it big in Canada is turning into a battle for survival for many immigrants due to the high cost of living and rental shortages, as rising emigration numbers hint at newcomers being forced to turn their back on a country that they chose to make their adopted home.

Canada's surging cost of living fuels reverse immigration

Canada seems to have lost its charm in attracting skilled workers as the escalating cost of living crisis and shortage of rental options is triggering reverse migration, undermining the policies of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government.

According to official figures, around 42,000 individuals left Canada in the first six months of 2023, in addition to the 93,818 people who flew out in 2022 and 85,927 exits in 2021.

The highest was in 2019 when it hit the two-decade high, a recent report from the Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC), an immigration advocacy group, stated.

Though the numbers ebbed during the COVID-19 lockdown, the trend has picked up pace once again, data by Statistics Canada showed.

Rising emigration

While that is a fraction of the 263,000 who came to the country over the same period, a steady rise in emigration is making some observers wary, reports Reuters news agency.

People who spoke to the Reuters news agency said that the high cost of living is making it difficult for them to sustain in Canada, which has an ageing population and is dependent on migrants to boost the economy.

"I never realised that living in a Western country, you can only afford to rent a room in the basement," said Cara (name changed), 25, who came to Canada in 2022 as a refugee from Hong Kong.

She pays 650 ($474) Canadian dollars in rent for a single-room basement apartment in Scarborough in eastern Toronto, which is about 30 per cent of her monthly take-home salary.

Unable to afford rent

Cara, who goes to an adult learning school, says she has to work three part-time jobs in order to make a minimum wage of C$16.55 per hour

Adding to their misery is sky-high housing costs, which is driving many away from taking permanent residency in Canada,

On average in Canada about 60% of household income would be needed to cover home ownership costs, a figure that rises to about 98 per cent for Vancouver and 80 per cent for Toronto, RBC said in a September report.

Canada losing faith in its Prime minister?

Canada is intensifying financial requirements for international students seeking study permits, with Immigration Minister Marc Miller almost doubling the mandatory proof of funds. As part of the changes, the minimum bank account requirement for study permit applicants will increase from $10,000 to $20,635 in 2024, in addition to the tuition fees paid by international students, Canada's local media reports said.

Additionally, those who have already submitted study permit applications by December 7, 2023, and those currently in Canada will be allowed to work off-campus for more than 20 hours per week until April 2024. The temporary lifting of the 20-hour work limit for international students, in place since last year, will now be extended until April 30, 2024.

In response to the high immigration and housing crisis, Miller has issued a stern warning, threatening significant restrictions on visas if provinces and educational institutions do not address the issue promptly.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Miller said that the federal government is willing to take drastic measures, including limiting visas, to ensure that designated learning institutions provide sufficient support for international students.

A Canadian cyclist has made a world record for the longest distance covered riding a bicycle hands-free. He covered 130.29 km (80.95 miles) without using his hands to steady the bicycle on the road and set a new world record for the longest distance cycled.

Robert Murray, a resident of Canada's Alberta province, covered the distance in 5 hours and 37 minutes on June 12 this year. The news about his feat was published by Guinness World Records on its website on Wednesday (Dec 6).

Murray's attempt at the world record was part of a fundraising campaign for the Alzheimer’s Society of Calgary.

“Alzheimer’s is something that runs in my family, and I have since lost my grandma to the disease,” said Robert as quoted by Guinness World Records.

“Breaking a record and raising money for a cause near and dear to my heart was just a double win!”

A childhood hobby

Roberts's love for cycling developed during his childhood when he and his sister would travel 10 kms to attend swimming classes.

When he was 15, he saved money to buy his first road bike. He used the same bike to break the record.

“A lot of the parts have since been replaced but it’s the same frame,” he said.

“It has a lot of the same scratches and dents from all the times I have fallen off of it.”

As he cycled around in his teens, he soon learnt to ride the bike without using hands.

“Personally, I find it to be a more comfortable position to be in rather than hunched over,” he said as quoted by Guinness World Records.

“I can text, change the song, get anything out of my backpack all while riding my bike. It’s like second nature for me.”

One of the most prominent pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong, Agnes Chow, who was jailed over her role in massive 2019 protests, on Sunday (Dec 3) revealed that she has left Hong Kong for Canada and would probably not return to meet her bail conditions.

The 27-year-old finally broke her silence two-and-a-half years after she was released after spending seven months in jail over a protest outside Hong Kong police headquarters in 2019.

What happened to Chow?

Chow, on her 27th birthday, took to Instagram and published two posts saying that she had left Hong Kong for Toronto in mid-September for university studies and would not return to report to the police as her bail conditions demanded, in December or possibly ever.

In her first public comments since her release from prison in June 2021, she also detailed how she had remained under “supervision” from the authorities, the pressure of which led to her developing depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

Chow said that she managed to get her passport back after agreeing to take part in a propaganda tour in mainland China. She was released on police bail on conditions, including surrendering her passport and reporting regularly to the police.

In July, Hong Kong police offered to return her passport on the condition that Chow would travel with them to the Chinese city of Shenzhen.

In August, the 27-year-old accompanied by five police officers was shown an exhibition of China’s achievements and the headquarters of tech giant Tencent – where she was requested to pose for photos, which Chow speculated would be held as proof of her “patriotism” to China.

While she was not questioned by Chinese authorities or met any Communist party officials, Chow said that she felt like “I was under surveillance all the time”.

Upon her return to Hong Kong, she was asked to write a letter of thanks to the police for arranging the trip to “understand the great development of my motherland”.

She was allowed to leave after the national security authorities demanded she submit information about the course, timetable, accommodation and other records in Canada. Chow was also required to return to Hong Kong during college holidays.

It was only in recent weeks that Chow had decided not to return to Hong Kong citing fears that if she went back there would be more conditions placed on her, or would be prevented from leaving again.

“I don’t want to be forced to do anything any more, and I don’t want to be forced to go to mainland China any more,” said the 27-year-old.

“After…considering the situation in Hong Kong, my own safety, my physical and mental health, I decided not to go back, and will probably never go back for the rest of my life,” Chow wrote.

Hong Kong police ‘responds’

In a seeming response to Chow’s post, the Hong Kong police released a statement on Monday (Dec 4), condemning these “irresponsible behaviours that blatantly challenge law and order.”

It added, “The police appeal to the person involved to step back from the cliff and not choose to take a path of no return and bear the name of ‘fugitive’ for the rest of her life.”

Chow was once one of the most prominent young faces of the 2012, 2014 and 2019 protests against China’s increasingly authoritarian rule in Hong Kong and a core member of the now-disbanded group of younger activists Demosisto, which helped drive the movement.

Demosisto dissolved hours after Beijing passed a sweeping national security law in 2020. The law has led to more than 280 arrests. Chow was sentenced to 10 months in jail in Nov 2020 over an unauthorised assembly and faced an alleged national security charge.

The Durham Police informed that the kangaroo was caught early in the morning near Winchester Road East and Harmony Road North in Oshawa and handed over to the zoo authorities. "Members from @DRPSCEDiv spotted the missing Kangaroo at approx. 3am this morning. Officers were able to communicate with the Kangaroo's handlers and successfully apprehended him at approx 6am this morning," the police said in a media release on X (formerly known as Twitter). That is when one of the kangaroos made the 'daring' escape. “This is not our kangaroo. It was just supposed to be a stopover, like a hotel room, on its way to Quebec," an employee with the zoo was quoted as saying by CP24. One of the videos showed the mammal standing at the end of a driveway and later hopping along the grass line beside the road. At the time, the experts at the zoo sounded caution over the health of the kangaroo. “Thankfully we’re having a bit of a warm spell. Kangaroos can handle a temperature up to about -10, but (below that) it gets very risky," said one expert. (With inputs from agencies)

Finland eliminated reigning champions Canada with a 2-1 Davis Cup last eight triumph, buoyed by fervent support as the finals began in Malaga on Tuesday. Following their triumph in the Billie Jean King Cup earlier in November, Canada hoped to continue their success in the men's World Cup of tennis, but were ousted as Finland reached the semi-finals for the first time.

Canada's Milos Raonic eased to a 6-3, 7-5 win over Patrick Kaukovalta in the first singles rubber before Otto Virtanen kept Finland's hopes alive by beating Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 7-5. Virtanen returned alongside Harri Heliovaara to triumph 7-5, 6-3 in the decisive doubles against Alexis Galarneau and Vasek Pospisil to delight a few thousand Finnish supporters on the Costa del Sol.

"We played really great doubles today...we played really great together," said Virtanen. "Why stop here, we have even more party on Friday," added Heliovaara. Neither country had their top-ranked player available, with Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime and Finland's Emil Ruusuvuori both hurt. Raonic came flying out of the blocks with four aces to hold to love in the first game against Kaukovalta and racked up 18 in total in his straight sets triumph.

The former world number three made his competitive comeback in June after nearly two years away because of injuries but his high-power serve remains as lethal as ever. Despite a splash of Canadian red in the stands at the Martin Carpena arena being outnumbered by those in blue and white, the Canadian held his nerve in his first Davis Cup match since 2018.

After breaking for a 5-3 lead in the first set and serving it out, dropping just one point on serve in the process, Raonic lost only two more in the second set of his convincing victory. "I have definitely never played against anyone with that kind of serve," said Kaukovalta.

"I had no read for it at any point of the match." However Virtanen, who played a key role in Finland's progress to the Davis Cup finals, gave Finland's support plenty to cheer about.

"In front of these fans it just makes me play better every time," said Virtanen, showing power and fine reflexes to dispatch Diallo with a break in both sets, forcing the decisive doubles. The Finnish duo got the better of 2014 Wimbledon doubles champion Pospisil and his partner Galarneau, breaking at the second time of asking to take the first set 7-5.

They broke again for a 5-3 lead in the second set and served it out, Virtanen clinching victory with an ace. Finland will face Australia or the Czech Republic in Friday's first semi-final. India has responded to the U.S. indictment that names an Indian government employee in an alleged plot to assassinate Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on US soil. India has formed a panel to probe the charges that New Delhi has described as 'contrary to government policy.'

Amid claims made by the US government that it foiled an assassination attempt against a Sikh separatist leader on its soil by an Indian man, Canada's Justin Trudeau has chimed in with a response. The Canadian prime minister urged India to take Ottawa's allegations seriously, referring to the murder of another separatist leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Vancouver, earlier this year.

India and Canada have been in a diplomatic standoff ever since Trudeau addressed the parliament and said his government had 'credible allegations' that New Delhi was involved in the killing of the Khalistani separatist.

"The news coming out of the United States further underscores what we've been talking about from the very beginning, which is that India needs to take this seriously," Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa.

"The Indian government needs to work with us to ensure that we're getting to the bottom of this," he added.

Notably, Trudeau had remained quiet on the issue for some time but hours after US Justice Department on Wednesday (Nov 29) said it was charging a 52-year-old Indian man for a plot to assassinate Khalistani separatist and leader of the banned Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) outfit Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the liberal Canadian PM came up with a statement.

The Justice Department said the Indian man, identified as Nikhil Gupta, arrested by Czech authorities in June, had worked with an Indian government employee.

"The defendant conspired from India to assassinate, right here in New York City, a US citizen of Indian origin who has publicly advocated for the establishment of a sovereign state for Sikhs," Damian Williams, the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, said in a statement.

Google has reached a deal with Canada to keep news stories in search results and to pay news publishers $74 million (C$100 million) annually. Canadian Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge made the announcement on Wednesday (Nov 29) which brings an end to a bitter fight between the two parties that ensued at the start of the year.

The search engine giant had previously vowed to remove links to news in Canada in response to the Online News Act, introduced by Justin Trudeau's Liberal government and due to come into effect on December 19.

"Following weeks of productive discussions, I am happy to announce that we have found a path forward with Google for the implementation of the Online News Act," said St-Onge.

The minister added that funding would be used for a "wide range of news businesses across the country, including independent news businesses and those from Indigenous and official-language minority communities".

As for how the money would be distributed, the government said Google would pay a "single collective" which would distribute the funds to news agencies based on the number of full-time journalists engaged by those businesses.

Nijjar Killing: India's envoy to canada hits out, "India cooperating with the US not Canada"

Jamaica shocked Canada 3-2 on Tuesday to reach the semifinals of the CONCACAF Nations League and seal a place at next year's expanded Copa America taking place in the United States. A second-half brace from Shamar Nicholson and a late Bobby Reid penalty handed the Reggae Boyz a stunning second leg upset at Toronto's BMO Field that sent the Jamaicans through on away goals after the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate.

Canada, who won the away leg 2-1 in Kingston on Saturday, had looked to be heading towards the last four after Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies put them 1-0 up on the night, 3-1 on aggregate after 25 minutes. But Jamaica hit back in the second half with Nicholson's shot into the bottom corner making it 1-1 after 62 minutes.

Four minutes later Nicholson made it 2-1 -- and level on aggregate -- sliding home a close-range finish after a sweeping Jamaican counterattack. Yet there was more drama moments later when Ismael Kone headed home an equalizer that left the Canadians ahead on aggregate.

However Canada's relief was short-lived. On 75 minutes Stephen Eustaquio was adjudged to have handled in the area and Bobby Reid stepped up to calmly fire in the penalty that sent Jamaica into the last four.

Jamaica endured a nervous finish after being reduced to 10 men following Demarai Gray's 84th-minute dismissal, but the Reggae Boyz held on to advance. The loss was a shattering blow for Canada, which qualified for the World Cup last year for the first time since the 1986 finals.

He added, “The rise in anti-Semitism in our city is frightening and the repeated violence and attacks on our community are abhorrent and condemned in the strongest terms.”

He also told the Canadian media that the attack took place hours after around 60 people from the Jewish community gathered in the building to discuss using a federal program to pay for more security at their schools and organisations.

“It did make it through the door, but other than that there was no further damage except for charred floors, walls and the glass panel of the front door was blown out,” Emanuel told CBC News.

“We really feel attacked,” said the Rabbi, adding that the community wouldn’t be intimidated.

Police investigation

Montreal police’s arson squad is leading the investigation and the hate crimes unit has been advised but is not yet actively involved in the investigation, reported CBC News. The law enforcement officials are also reportedly reviewing CCTV footage from the area.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday (Nov 24) said that his political rival was abandoning Ukraine under the influence of former United States president Donald Trump.

All 109 Conservative lawmakers in the House of Commons, in a preliminary poll on Tuesday (Nov 21), resisted the updated legislation for the free trade agreement between Canada and Ukraine, which received the unanimous backing of all the other parties.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, elucidating the reason why his party did not back the agreement, stated that this would push Ukraine to adopt a carbon tax.

The trade bill includes language that the two countries will "promote" carbon pricing and mitigation, but does not have conditions that compel such a plan.

"To see the Conservative Party of Canada decide not to support Ukraine with something they need with the absurd excuse that it's because Ukraine is going to put a price on pollution is ridiculous," Trudeau told reporters in French at a news conference in Newfoundland.

Trump, who is seeking reelection in the 2024 presidential polls, has fiercely criticised the United States' backing for Ukraine and has claimed to end the war between Moscow and Kyiv within 24 hours if re-elected.

After Russia, Canada has the second-largest Ukrainian expatriate community.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress released a statement expressing disappointment over Conservatives voting against the trade agreement.

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau says political rival abandoning Ukraine due to Donald Trump's influence

Cameron Ortis, a former high-ranking Canadian police official, was found guilty on Wednesday (Nov 22) of leaking secret and classified information to suspected criminals. In a historic espionage case, the jury announced its landmark ruling stating that a former Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) intelligence official was guilty of breaching Canada's secrets law. Notably, his case is the first time an individual was tried under Canada’s current espionage law.

The 51-year-old Ortis was director general of the RCMP national intelligence coordination unit. He was arrested in 2020 on accusations of abusing his position in order to obtain sensitive material from Canada and the strong Five Eyes intelligence collaboration, which also includes Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand.

Ortis then attempted to sell the information to those involved in money laundering activities for terrorist organisations on Canada's list. He also informed an unidentified person about an undercover police who was targeting one of his acquaintances in Vancouver, which the prosecution claimed put the undercover cop in danger.

He was found guilty on all the six counts he faced, which included four under the Security of Information Act (SOIA) for leaking and trying to sell special operational information. He was also found guilty of unauthorised use of a computer and breach of trust. His bail was revoked until a sentencing hearing scheduled for January 11-12.

Prosecutor Judy Kliewer was quoted in local reports as saying that "we will be seeking a very lengthy prison term" in the range of 20 years or more. And, he is not only a "flight risk, but he’s an asset. He has so much information. This is not a usual case at all".

The defence had sought to paint Ortis as a patriot and a dedicated member of the RCMP who acted "to confront a grave threat to Canada."

But Kliewer urged the jury in closing arguments not to believe him when Ortis claimed that "his criminal, self-motivated acts were aimed at some lofty and secret purpose."

Ortis received a suspicious tip from a foreign agency in late 2014, according to redacted transcripts of his evidence, which was provided behind closed doors for security reasons.

That led him on a secret mission to use intelligence to lure criminal targets into adopting an encrypted service set up to eavesdrop on their communications.

The tip, he said, included credible information about a national security threat that he had been instructed not to share with anyone as there was concern about a possible mole within police ranks.

The northern US states of Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana are facing a major swine-related threat. The states have been forced to take measures to stop the exploding population of hard-to-eradicate “super pigs” in Canada from spilling over.

These highly elusive crossbreed pigs are capable of surviving cold winters by tunnelling under snow. The super pigs have combined the size and high fertility of domestic swine and the survival skills of wild Eurasian boar to create a species that is far too powerful for nature.

They are currently roaming parts of Canada's Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba with scientists calling them the "most invasive animal on the planet".

The wild pigs are responsible for a host of environmental damages that range from eating farmers’ crops to destroying trees and polluting water.

Such is their multiplying prowess that even if 65 per cent of the boars are culled every year, their population will continue to increase. Eradication of wild pigs is no longer possible in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

US facing new threat from Canada: Invasive 'super pigs' that destroy 'everything' reach borders

Against the backdrop of Western media reports over alleged plans to kill Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun and Intel shared with India by the US, the MEA has responded. New Delhi confirmed having received US inputs on the "nexus between organized criminals, gun runners, terrorists and others" and said that it takes "such inputs seriously since it impinges on our own national security interests as well'.

In response to media queries on reports of discussions between India and US on security matters, spokesperson for Minister of External Affairs (MEA) Arindam Bagchi in a press release said, "During the course of recent discussions on India-US security cooperation, the US side shared some inputs pertaining to nexus between organised criminals, gun runners, terrorists, and others. The inputs are a cause of concern for both countries and they decided to take necessary follow up action."

This comes after a Financial Times report while quoting multiple sources aware of the matter reported that US thwarted a plot to assassinate Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who holds dual citizenship - American and Canadian.

The report also claimed that Washington raised this issued with the Indian government and warned that it has apprehensions over India's involvement in the alleged conspiracy.

Bagchi also added that "issues in the context of US inputs are already being examined by relevant departments."

Pannun earlier shocked the nation with his grave threats to Air India passengers, leaving open the scars of the 1985 Kanishka bombings.

However, the report while shedding light on the plot did not provide any clarity if it "did not say whether the protest to New Delhi led the plotters to abandon their plan, or whether the FBI intervened and foiled a scheme already in motion."

The report was solely backed by information from FT sources who sought anonymity while sharing the intel as the case at hand is highly sensitive.

Although the exact date was not revealed, the report claimed that Washington shared the intel related to Pannun with its allies after the Vancouver killing of another India-designated Khalistani terrorist and Canadian Hardeep Singh Nijjar on June 18, when he was fatally shot outside a gurudwara.

As far as flagging the Pannun assassination plot to the Indian government is concerned, the report while quoting an anonymous source said the warning was issued to New Delhi following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to Washington which took place from June 21 to 24.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in September levelled serious allegations against India without giving any evidence. Trudeau said that there were “credible allegations” that the Indian government is involved in the Nijjar's killing, a charge which New Delhi not only rubbished but said were utterly "baseless."

Sealed indictment against an accused in plot?

Other than the alleged diplomatic exchange over the plot to kill Pannun between the US and India, the report goes on to say that US federal prosecutors have "filed a sealed indictment against at least one alleged perpetrator of the plot in a New York district court."

The report made these claims citing people who are aware of the legal case.

Giving further details on the alleged indictment, the Financial Times report said that the US justice department is now "debating whether to unseal the indictment and make the allegations public or wait until Canada finishes its investigation into Nijjar’s murder."

The people in knowledge of the proceedings and quoted by FT said that one individual who was charged in the alleged indictment is believed to have left the US.

However, there have been no official statement from US or the Justice Department over the matter.

Moreover, the US National Security Council told FT that US does “not comment on ongoing law enforcement matters or private diplomatic discussions with our partners."

“Upholding the safety and security of US citizens is paramount," the NSC reportedly added.
