The BRICS New Delhi Summit has revived talk of an old idea: the Russia-India-China (RIC) trilateral, first conceived in the late 1990s and never formally launched. With Western tariffs pushing Moscow and Beijing to seek common ground with Delhi, and India-China ties cautiously thawing, the chorus for RIC is growing louder. But India has stayed non-committal, any revival depends on "mutual convenience", raising the real question: would formalizing RIC actually challenge India's careful balancing act?

BRICS Summit 2026: RIC acted as the precursor for BRICS

In one of the biggest highlights of BRICS 2026, Xi Jinping told PM Modi that China and India are "partners, not rivals, and opportunities, not threats" for each other, laying out a four-point framework for steadier ties. Modi thanked Xi for backing India's BRICS chairship and confirmed India will fully support China as it takes over the chairship in 2027 to host the 19th Summit. Border peace, trade imbalances and market access also featured prominently in the talks.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres' spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said on Saturday (September 12) that the meeting between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit was "very important". He called India's role a 'bridge-builder' in efforts to end the ongoing West Asia conflict. Dujarric stated that it is very important for the parties involved to meet and communicate amid escalating tensions. "I think it is very important that they meet. The issue of Palestine and upholding the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination is a serious test of the credibility and legitimacy of global governance and requires BRICS to play an active role," Pezeshkian said. Dujarric also touched on Gaza, calling on all sides to carry out the peace plan backed by the UN Security Council. He noted that the Security Council had endorsed a peace framework put forth by President Trump, and stressed the importance of all parties acting on it. He described the humanitarian conditions in Gaza as dire, adding that the ongoing instability, both there and in the West Bank, cannot be ignored, and that the two-state solution must remain the ultimate objective. When PM Modi welcomed world leaders at Bharat Mandapam for the BRICS Summit, the iconic Ramanathaswamy Temple from Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu formed the striking backdrop. Modi personally explained the temple's significance to Xi Jinping as they shook hands, before doing the same for Putin, El-Sisi, Ramaphosa and other leaders. One of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is deeply tied to the Ramayana and stands as a symbol of India's spiritual and cultural heritage.

Attention is also on the bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, their first meeting on Indian soil since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash in eastern Ladakh. The two leaders previously met in Kazan in 2024. The day’s agenda includes a closed-door session on inclusive global governance and strengthening multilateralism, a visit to the Bharat Innovates Exhibition, a group photograph and a joint tree-planting ceremony.

Trump wants to weaken BRICS, but his own tariff threats might be doing the opposite. After threatening a 10% tariff on nations aligned with the bloc's "anti-American policies," Washington's aggressive trade pressure on Brazil, India and China seems to be pushing them closer together, not further apart. The dollar still dominates 57.1% of global reserves, so BRICS isn't replacing it anytime soon, but analysts say continued coercion is exactly what's fueling the bloc's growing appeal.

BRICS nations have rejected the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, declaring it “unilateral”, “punitive”, "discriminatory" and “protectionist”. The New Delhi Declaration, adopted unanimously, criticised the environmental import taxes, warning they penalise developing economies and harm the global trading system. It called for greater financial and technological support for developing countries to tackle climate change.“We oppose unilateral, punitive, discriminatory and protectionist measures that are not in line with international law, such as carbon border adjustment mechanisms,” the BRICS declaration said. It added that the grouping was concerned that such measures “undermine efforts by countries, specifically the developing countries, aimed at addressing the adverse impacts of climate change, increasing adaptive capacity and resilience.”The bloc argues these levies unfairly shift the financial burden of decarbonisation onto the Global South. It has a tax which penalises core developing-country exports, including iron, steel, aluminium, cement, and fertilisers. As the 18th BRICS Summit takes place in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen holding hands, sharing hugs and smiles with world leaders from Russia, China and Iran. The Summit comes at a time amid heightened geopolitical tensions and challenging times for several nations as they reel from the effects of wars in West Asia and Europe. Visuals from the high-stakes summit went viral, showing PM Modi sharing moments with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. While language may be a barrier for the leaders, the leaders seem to connect well with each other, sharing a bond and sending a strong message to the rest of the world. Here’s what body language expert Gaurav Gill told WION.
PM Modi and Xi
Speaking about a video showing PM Modi welcoming Xi at the summit, Gill said the two leaders’ body language shows authority, confidence, interest, and respect.“When he (PM Modi) goes ahead and welcomes him (Chinese President Xi), he extends his hand first, and then that’s a sign of welcoming, and there is clear authority,” Gill said.He further explains, “When he brings him here, you see... When the Chinese president is standing and listening, he puts both hands at the back. That is a sign of respect and interest in what has been delivered to him.”“Also when he’s standing, there is distance between his feet that speaks of authority. A similar thing can be seen for our Indian PM; there’s a lot of confidence and authority as they shake hands, and as they go, PM Modi shows him the way and we see Xi Jinping also smiling along. He makes eye contact.”Gill says Xi’s body language shows that there is a strong reason why he has come to India after seven years.

It is a bond-generating chemical. It also speaks of close proximity, and it says we are standing with you, especially when the times are difficult,” he said.Gill said that it also conveys a message of building resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability. He added that it shows that India is standing by the allies and also sends a strong message to the rest of the world.
What PM Modi’s handshakes mean?
Gill said that all handshakes shared by PM Modi show personal chemistry and also speak of warmth. It also shows that we are looking at dialogue and a close connection.“How BRICS was born was originally with Brazil, Russia, India and China. How it grew to 11 nations sends a strong message to other countries. Our Indian PM holding hands and shaking hands is also sending a msg that we are keeping them close and we are forming a bond, and now this has grown to 11 countries. So that is sending a message,” Gill said. “There was a tree plantation together, which was to send a message that it was a sapling earlier; now it will grow into a bigger bond, and it will form into a strong multilateral and multiple coalition over a period of time.”
