Sure, the Legion of Super-Pets aren`t as recognizable as Superman or Aquaman, but "DC League of Super-Pets" could have resonated with audiences a little more given its affiliation with DC Comics and its high-wattage voice cast in Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart.<br />

In pandemic times, "DC League of Super-Pets" is yet another kid-friendly film that has struggled to wow in its box office debut. Movies aimed at family audiences have been a mixed bag as of late, which is concerning because it`s a demographic that has always been a reliable source of revenue. In terms of opening weekend revenues, "DC League of Super-Pets" arrived behind Pixar`s "Lightyear," which debuted to $51 million, and Universal`s "Minions: The Rise of Gru," which opened to $107 million. But its start falls in line with other pandemic-era family films like "The Bad Guys" ($23.9 million), "Sing 2" ($22.3 million) and Disney`s "Encanto" ($27 million).<br />
However, "DC League of Super-Pets" doesn`t have much competition on the horizon, which could work to its advantage. It helps that audiences liked the film, which landed an "A-" CinemaScore.<br />

Despite stacked competition, Paramount`s family-friendly sequel "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" sped past "Fantastic Beasts 3" and others to land in second place with $15.2 million from 3,809 venues. After three weeks in theaters, the "Sonic" follow-up has generated a mighty $145.8 million. The film is less than $3 million away from surpassing its predecessor`s $148 million pre-pandemic domestic box office total, though 2020`s "Sonic the Hedgehog" likely would have enjoyed a longer run on the big screen without COVID-19 spoiling those plans.</p>

That may explain why Paramount`s go-for-broke action-comedy 'Jackass Forever'&nbsp;triumphed at the domestic box office while Roland Emmerich`s disaster epic 'Moonfall'&nbsp;turned into an epic disaster.<br />

'Jackass Forever,'&nbsp;the fourth instalment in the ongoing saga of projectiles to the groin, collected $23 million from 3,604 North American locations in its debut, landing on the higher end of expectations. The latest 'Jackass,'&nbsp;starring Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Wee Man and other daredevils from MTV days, had been widely expected to win the weekend, but its victory is still surprising and impressive because it has been some time since a pure comedy has claimed the top spot on box office charts.<br />

In catapulting to first place, 'Jackass Forever'&nbsp;finally took down reigning champion 'Spider-Man: No Way Home,'&nbsp;which has spent six of the last seven weeks at No. 1.<br />

'Jackass Forever'&nbsp;has been a (unexpected?) hit with critics, notching a strong 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and 'B+'&nbsp;CinemaScore from audience members. Variety`s chief film critic Owen Gleiberman had positive things to say, writing in his review that "Johnny Knoxville and company are now middle aged, but that hasn`t slowed their juvenile masochistic fervor." Those ticket sales are potentially problematic because 'Moonfall'&nbsp;cost $140 million to produce, making it one of the most expensive independent films in history. Commercial sentiment may not help; moviegoers stuck the film with an unenthusiastic 'C+'&nbsp;CinemaScore. Unless the movie becomes a huge hit overseas, 'Moonfall'&nbsp;likely will not become a financial success.<br />

Emmerich, having turned 'Independence Day,'&nbsp;'The Day After Tomorrow'&nbsp;and '2012'&nbsp;into commercial cash-cows, had once been the premier chronicler of big-budget catastrophe. But in the case of 'Moonfall,'&nbsp;which Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Michael Pena and Donald Sutherland and centers on efforts to prevent the moon from colliding with Earth, his movies aren`t offering the kind of stress-free escapism that pandemic-fatigued audiences are looking for.<br />

"At the moment, with the world coming apart in real time, who wants to sit through a disaster story? It`s more fun to laugh at `Jackass,`" says Gross.</p>

Those ticket sales are potentially problematic because 'Moonfall' cost $140 million to produce, making it one of the most expensive independent films in history. Commercial sentiment may not help; moviegoers stuck the film with an unenthusiastic 'C+' CinemaScore. Unless the movie becomes a huge hit overseas, 'Moonfall' likely will not become a financial success. Emmerich, having turned 'Independence Day,' 'The Day After Tomorrow' and '2012' into commercial cash-cows, had once been the premier chronicler of big-budget catastrophe. But in the case of 'Moonfall,' which Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Michael Pena and Donald Sutherland and centers on efforts to prevent the moon from colliding with Earth, his movies aren`t offering the kind of stress-free escapism that pandemic-fatigued audiences are looking for. "At the moment, with the world coming apart in real time, who wants to sit through a disaster story? It`s more fun to laugh at `Jackass,`" says Gross.

<p>Contrary to rumours, Chinese superstar Jackie Chan is not being treated for coronavirus. The deadly virus, which originated in China and has now spread to West Asia and Europe has at least over 100 cases confirmed in Hong Kong alone- where the actor was born and raised. Nearly 6000 buildings in Hong Kong have been under quarantine which is perhaps why Chan's quarantine rumour started.<br />
