Conservative Party loses poll lead over Labour after Johnson's Christmas party scandal

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's adviser, Allegra Stratton, has resigned after a video of her went viral. The video shows Stratton taking questions from her colleague at a mock press briefing. She can be seen joking about a "fictional" party that was "not socially distanced."

The party took place in the year 2020 when Britain was placed under a strict lockdown and millions of people were banned from meeting close family and friends for a traditional Christmas celebration.

While speaking to the reporters, Stratton said, "My remarks seemed to make light of the rules, rules that people were doing everything to obey. That was never my intention. I will regret those remarks for the rest of my days."

"I understand the anger and frustration that people feel. To all of you who lost loved ones, who endured intolerable loneliness and who struggled with your businesses, I am truly sorry and this afternoon I am offering my resignation to the Prime Minister."

As a response, Johnson vowed ''disciplinary action,'' as he announced an internal probe of the leaked footage. He even issued an apology. However, despite apologising, Johnson denied that a party took place at Downing Street.

"I understand and share the anger up and down the country at seeing No 10 staff seeming to make light of lockdown measures," he said.

"I apologise unreservedly for the offence that it has caused... and I apologise for the impression that it gives."

Meanwhile, as Covid cases continue to surge amid fears of a new variant, Johnson announced new restrictions to curb the growing wave of the deadly virus. As a part of 'Plan B', vaccine passports have been mandated for places with larger crowds. Also, guidelines for work from home have also been issued.

With this, the government has also mandated masks in "most public indoor venues, including theatres and cinemas."

During a raucous parliamentary question session, Johnson faced calls for his resignation from some opposition politicians. Tory MP Roger Gale said, "This isn't a laughing matter." UK drugs crackdown: Boris Johnson's $398 million plan to tackle drug menace

Alarmed over reports of rampant drug usage on Parliament grounds in the UK, the Speaker of House of Commons is considering calling police sniffer dogs after traces of cocaine and other drugs were detected in Westminster.

The suggestion is currently being reviewed by senior MPs after an investigation by British daily The Times found traces of cocaine at 11 out of 12 test sites.

Among the sites where traces of drugs were discovered include a bathroom close to the private offices of Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Priti Patel.

Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle has vowed to launch an investigation.

“The accounts of drug misuse in Parliament given to the Sunday Times are deeply concerning – and I will be raising them as a priority with the Metropolitan Police next week. I expect to see full and effective enforcement of the law,” he said.

“It may be that we now need to broaden the range of sniffer dogs … to include those which can detect drugs,” The Times cited Conservative MP Charles Walker as saying.

Sniffer dogs have previously been deployed in the House of Commons to detect explosives.

The places tested with drug use in the sweep are only accessible to those with a parliamentary pass, or visitors allowed in who have to be accompanied around the building by the person they are meeting.

Recently, Boris Johnson discussed his new plans to crack down on drug use and distribution across the UK, set to ‘make an example' out of middle-class offenders.

Boris Johnson rules out lockdown as UK citizens are confused over Christmas celebrations

The day after at least 27 people died trying to cross the English Channel when their flimsy inflatable boat capsized during the perilous voyage, the leaders of France and England vowed to crack down on migrant crossings even as they offered a fractious response to one of the deadliest disasters in recent years involving migrants trying to cross the narrow waterway separating the two countries.

French officials confirmed that children and a pregnant woman were among those who had drowned, as crews worked in the cold and wind to recover bodies and to try to identify those who died. Two people, one from Iraq and one from Somalia, were found and taken to a French hospital, where they were being treated for severe hypothermia.

The representative in Paris of Iraq’s Kurdistan region said many of the victims were believed to be Iraqi Kurds but that identifying them was difficult. French officials have not said where the dead were from.

The tragedy was a stark reminder that five years after authorities dismantled a sprawling migrant camp in Calais, both countries are still struggling to handle the flow of migrants in the area.

France and Britain have long accused each other of not doing enough to curb attempts to cross the channel. After the tragedy Wednesday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson of Britain said greater efforts should be made to allow joint patrols along the French coast.

And President Emmanuel Macron of France said he expected the British “to cooperate fully and to abstain from using this dramatic situation for political means.”

Speaking to reporters Thursday, Macron added that France was in any case only a “country of transit” for migrants who wanted to reach Britain.

“In a way, we are holding the border for the British,” he said, adding that most of the migrants who reach the area around Calais did not want asylum in France despite offers from French authorities.

The two leaders spoke by phone late Wednesday and said in statements afterward that they had agreed to step up efforts to prevent migrants from making the journey across one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

Under an agreement between the two nations, Britain pays France to clamp down on crossings through surveillance and patrols.

Johnson said that he was “shocked and appalled and deeply saddened by the loss of life at sea in the channel.” But, he added: “I also want to say that this disaster underscores how dangerous it is to cross the channel in this way.”

Macron called for an immediate tightening of border controls and an increased crackdown with other European nations on people smugglers.

“France won’t let the Channel become a graveyard,” he said in a statement.

The drownings came only a few days after French and British authorities had reached an agreement to do more to stem the number of people taking to the sea.

Attempts to reach Britain in small boats have increased in recent years as authorities have cracked down on the smuggling of asylum-seekers inside trucks crossing by ferry or through the Channel Tunnel.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been 47,000 attempts to cross the channel in small boats, and 7,800 migrants had been saved from shipwrecks, according to French officials. Before Wednesday, seven people had died or disappeared so far this year.

Many migrants — who are often from countries in Africa or the Middle East like Iraq and Eritrea — consider Britain an ideal destination because English is spoken, because they already have family or compatriots there, and because it can be relatively easy to find off-the-books work.

But the recent increase in attempts to cross the English Channel by boat reflects a shift in how migrants are traveling, not in how many, according to migration experts and rights groups, who say that, overall, asylum applications in Britain are down this year.

The crossings have become another element in the worsening relations between France and Britain, which have also clashed over fishing rights and trading checks after Britain’s departure from the European Union, as well as over a submarine alliance among Australia, Britain and the United States that undermined a previous French deal.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is reportedly losing the confidence of his party members over his ‘rambling’ speech to the top industry leaders.

According to the Guardian, the Conservative party members are questioning his competence in running the government and are dismayed over his address at the business summit, where he—instead of discussing key policy issues—allocated a majority of address discussing his trip to the Peppa Pig World— an amusement park dedicated to the British preschool animated television series.

Apart from that, the Tory Party members are also reportedly unhappy over his key policy decisions such as social care proposals, decision to scale back rail improvements for the north and frustration over the government’s failure to keep its promises on small boats crossing the Channel.

A source from the prime ministers’ office at the Downing Street told the BBC that there was “a lot of concern inside the building about the PM … it’s just not working”, adding that the “cabinet needs to wake up and demand serious changes otherwise it’ll keep getting worse”.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's sister has revealed that he was a close friend of Ghislaine Maxwell, the British socialite accused of grooming underage girls for the late financier Jeffrey Epstein to sexually abuse.

Talking about a meeting between Johnson and the 59-year-old daughter of late newspaper baron Robert Maxwell, Rachel says that Maxwell had kept her high-heeled boot on top of Boris' thigh.

''It’s hard not to feel a batsqueak of pity for Ghislaine Maxwell-500 days and counting in solitary confinement,'' she added.

It comes amid intense pressure on Boris Johnson from opposition lawmakers over a row over MPs holding second jobs and posing conflicts of interest.

Speaking at a hearing of the British parliament's liaison committee, which brings together a number of committees scrutinising the government, Johnson said: "I have accepted that it was a mistake and that it was my mistake. All we wanted to do was to see whether in view of the particular and frankly tragic circumstances of the case, there was any cross-party approach on any appeals process."

Following the death of Epstein, a multimillion-dollar money manager who befriended countless celebrities including Britain's Prince Andrew, prosecutors vowed to pursue co-conspirators, resulting in Maxwell's arrest in July 2020.

Maxwell's alleged crimes occurred between 1994 and 2004, and relate to four unnamed women, including two who say they were just 14 and 15 years old when they were sexually abused.

She is a former girlfriend of Epstein, a teacher-turned-globetrotting-investor who counted Britain's Prince Andrew and former US President Donald Trump among his associates.

Epstein, 66, died in a Manhattan jail in August 2019 while awaiting trial on child sex trafficking charges, in what New York's official coroner ruled a suicide.
