UK PM Boris Johnson on Saturday visited the church on Saturday where British lawmaker David Amess was stabbed to death on Friday. Johnson laid flowers to condole the death. He was accompanied by Interior Minister Priti Patel and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer who also paid tribute to the departed member of the British Parliament.

Amess belonged to Johnson's Conservative Party and the fatal attack came five years after the murder of Jo Cox, a lawmaker from the opposition Labour Party, and has prompted a review of the security of elected politicians.

Amess, 69, was knifed repeatedly in the attack at about midday on Friday in Leigh-on-Sea, east of London, during a meeting with constituents.

In a statement early on Saturday, police said the early investigation had revealed a potential motivation linked to Islamist extremism.

"To the memory of Sir David Amess MP, a fine parliamentarian and a much-loved colleague and friend," Johnson said in a hand-written note placed in the flowers, adding in a Twitter post that his thoughts were with Amess' family and friends.

Johnson and Starmer stood side by side in a moment of silence before leaving. Other politicians, police representatives and members of the public came to lay flowers and pay respects.

Cannot be cowed

As tributes poured in for Amess, politicians described the attack as an assault on democracy, and Patel said security for lawmakers, known as MPs, was being reviewed and strengthened.

"All measures are being put in place for the security of MPs so that they can carry on with their duties as elected democratic members," Patel said in a broadcast clip following the visit.

"We live in an open society, a democracy. We cannot be cowed by any individual."

In Westminster, where lawmakers do much of their work in parliament, armed police are on patrol. But in their electoral districts, known as constituencies, more often than not there is no security.

Amess was stabbed while holding a surgery - one-to-one meetings with voters, open to whoever turns up.

UK PM Boris Johnson visits church where British lawmaker David Amess was stabbed to death

Industries across Britain have been warning in recent months that they are struggling to maintain operations because of labor market shortage. The government says it's caused by covid 19 and global factors, industry representatives say Brexit is a cause too.

British Prime Minister's decision to block public sexual harassment law has infuriated UK home secretary Priti Patel. Johnson's move to overrule the proposal has prompted concern at the home office. The home ministry has accused British Prime Minister of mere 'wolf whistling' the issue and not taking any concrete measures to counter the rising women safety issues.

British Prime Minister infuriates UK home secretary Priti Patel

Boris Johnson recently infuriated UK Home Secretary Priti Patel by overruling attempts to make public sexual harassment a crime. This has further led to concerns at the Home Office that the Prime Minister views the issue as mere “wolf-whistling”, rather than the aggressive targeting of women and girls.

After he blocked plans to make public sexual harassment a specific offence, there have been reports of tensions between Johnson and Priti Patel.

Last week, Johnson announced that he did not support any new law on tackling violence against women as he claimed that there is “abundant” existing legislation.

The sources believe the prime minister has completely misjudged the public mood as Patel's consultation on tackling violence against women and girls, drew feedback from 180,000 contributors. The majority were sent after the murder of Sarah Everard in March.

Also, many respondents complained of being hassled daily.

A senior Home Office source, who requested anonymity, was quoted by The Guardian as saying, "Trying to bring it down to wolf-whistling is massively problematic. But we’re going to make this happen. People are prepared to put their political capital behind this, and the home secretary is among those very much behind it.”

Another source said the prime minister seemed not to understand the issue.

“Make no mistake, Boris Johnson is the person blocking and holding this back. He seems to be stuck in the past on this issue," the source was quoted by The Guardian.

Priti Patel furious as Boris Johnson blocks public sexual harassment law

Britons are lining up for gas, staring at empty grocery shelves, paying higher taxes and worrying about spiraling prices as a grim winter approaches.

But to visit the Conservative Party conference in Manchester this past week was to enter a kind of happy valley, where Cabinet ministers danced, sang karaoke and drained flutes of Champagne — Pol Roger, Winston Churchill’s favorite brand, naturally.

Nobody captured the bonhomie better than Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who told a whooping crowd of party faithful, “You all represent the most jiving, hip, happening and generally funkapolitan party in the world.”

The cognitive dissonance extended beyond the Mardi Gras atmosphere. In his upbeat keynote speech, Johnson characterized the multiple ills afflicting Britain as a “function of growth and economic revival” — challenging but necessary post-Brexit adjustments on the way to a more prosperous future.

It was at least his third explanation for the food and fuel shortages, which continued in some areas after three weeks. Initially, he denied there was a crisis. Then, he said the shortages were not about Brexit — contradicting analysts, union leaders, food producers and business owners — but were hitting every Western country as they emerged from the pandemic. And finally, he cited the stresses as evidence that Brexit was doing its job in shaking up the economy.

“It is the ultimate in post-hoc rationalization — the idea that this is a well-thought-out plan, that we intended to do this all along,” said Jill Rutter, a senior research fellow at U.K. in a Changing Europe, a London think tank.

Few politicians have either the indomitable cheer or the ideological flexibility of Johnson, so it was hardly surprising that he tried to put the best face on Britain’s run of bad news. He remains utterly in command of the Conservative Party, which has an 80-seat majority in the Parliament, and comfortably ahead of the opposition Labour Party leader, Keir Starmer, in opinion polls.

Yet political analysts and economists said there were risks in the Panglossian tone he struck in Manchester. With inflation projected to continue at a relatively high level, and the government admitting that shortages could continue until Christmas, voters could quickly sour on Johnson. Then next year come tax rises, after he broke his promise not to increase them last month.

In hindsight, some said, the conference might be seen as a high-water mark for the prime minister.

“A few days of disruption to fuel supplies makes the government look foolish,” said Jonathan Portes, a professor of economics and public policy at King’s College London. “Much larger fuel bills are a much bigger deal.”

Tim Bale, a professor of politics at Queen Mary, University of London, said Johnson could come to resemble James Callaghan, a Labour prime minister who was toppled in 1979 after a winter of fuel shortages and runaway inflation, when he did not appear sufficiently alarmed about the pileup of problems.

When Johnson bounded into the auditorium at the conference last week, stopping to kiss his wife, Carrie, he looked anything but alarmed. Between jokes and jibes at the opposition, he presented a blueprint for a post-Brexit economy that he said would deliver high wages for skilled British workers, rather than lower-cost immigrants from the European Union, and put the onus on businesses to foot the bill.

Companies and previous governments “reached for the same old lever of uncontrolled immigration to keep wages low,” Johnson said. “The answer is to control immigration, to allow people of talent to come to this country, but not to use immigration as an excuse for failure to invest in people, in skills and in the equipment, the facilities, the machinery they need to do their jobs.”

That model is worlds away from Singapore-on-Thames, the catchphrase once used by the intellectual authors of Brexit to describe an open, lightly regulated, business-friendly hub that they said Britain would become once it cast off the labor laws and other shackles of Brussels. Nobody is talking about removing labor laws now (indeed, Johnson may soon move to raise Britain’s minimum wage).

Contradictions between protectionists and free-marketeers have run through the Brexit movement from the start.

“I describe it as Little England versus Global Britain,” Portes said, noting that Johnson, because of his lack of fixed convictions, was well-suited to hold this coalition together.

Since Johnson’s landslide election victory in 2019, however, the gravity in the Conservative Party has shifted decisively toward protectionism and anti-immigration policies. That was the message that helped the Tories lure disenchanted, working-class, former Labour voters in the industrial Midlands and north of England.

Many of these voters want the jobs that would come with the revival of British heavy industry, not better opportunities for hedge fund managers in London. Conservative politicians who once championed the Singapore-on-Thames model now play it down.

Johnson has embraced a blame-it-on-business message, which, while at odds with his party’s traditional principles, is popular with his new base. He singled out the trucking industry, arguing that its failure to invest in better truck stops — “with basic facilities where you don’t have to urinate in the bushes,” he said — was one of the reasons young people did not aspire to becoming drivers.

“It’s all of a piece with his move toward a much more populist style,” Bale said. “Johnson is pressing the right buttons, as far as these people are concerned.”

His tough-on-business language has scrambled the traditional lines in British politics. On Friday, voters were treated to the curious spectacle of Starmer lashing out at Johnson for his attacks on business and presenting the Labour Party as the better partner for Britain’s corporations.

For Johnson, critics said, the biggest risk is a lack of credibility. His initial claim that the food and fuel shortages were not caused by Brexit sounded unconvincing, given that his own government predicted rising prices and shortages of both in a 2019 report on the potential disruptions in the event of a “no-deal Brexit,” in which Britain would leave the European Union without a trade agreement.

The report, known as Operation Yellowhammer, laid out “reasonable worst-case planning assumptions,” among them that “certain types of fresh food supply will decrease” and that “customer behavior could lead to local shortages” of fuel. Although Britain negotiated a bare-bones trade deal with Brussels, its effect was similar to that of no deal.

While it is true that Johnson is indisputably setting his party’s agenda, it is not clear that the internal debates over the shape of a post-Brexit future are entirely settled. Rishi Sunak, the popular chancellor of the Exchequer, spoke at the conference about his years in California, and how he viewed Silicon Valley as a model for Britain.

“I’m not sure that having a truck driver shortage is part of that vision,” said Rutter, the research fellow.

Gravitas: UN proposes to make safe environment a human right

Declaring that Britain would not return to the “broken model” of the past, Prime Minister Boris Johnson vowed Wednesday to engineer a radical transformation of the country’s economy to a future defined by highly skilled workers earning higher wages.

Projecting sunny optimism but offering few details, Johnson sketched a vision of Britain on the cusp of change. He barely mentioned the spate of fuel and food shortages that have afflicted the country in recent weeks, characterizing them as mainly the consequence of a rapidly recovering economy in transition.

In a speech to a cheering crowd at his Conservative Party’s annual conference, Johnson said, “We are going to deal with the underlying issues of our economy and society — the problems that no government has had the guts to tackle, the long-term structural weaknesses in the U.K. economy.”

It was, Johnson said, “a change of direction that has been long overdue,” adding, “We are not going back to the same old broken model: low wages, low growth, low skills and low productivity — all of it enabled, as a system, by uncontrolled immigration.”

The prime minister devoted much of the speech to his flagship policy of “leveling up,” which aims to even out disparities between the economically disadvantaged northern parts of England and its more prosperous South. As he put it, “We have one of the most imbalanced societies and lopsided economies of all the richer countries.”

But Johnson offered little in the way of concrete policies, apart from a bonus payment to math and science teachers in economically struggling areas. His other pledges — to improve housing, tackle crime and upgrade transportation networks in northern cities — struck a familiar note.

Johnson has branded his agenda “Build Back Better,” the same slogan President Joe Biden uses for his infrastructure legislation (both adopted it around the same time last year). Unlike Biden, the prime minister riffed on the line, adapting it to describe the return of beavers to British rivers (“Build Back Beaver”) and beef exports to the United States (“Build Back Burger”).

Mixing self-deprecating humor with historical and literary references, gleeful jabs at the opposition and a populist appeal to social issues, Johnson reinforced his status as the Conservative Party’s all-purpose cheerleader.

At one point, the prime minister, who has six children with multiple partners, lamented Britain’s comparatively small population, despite, he said, his best efforts to add to it. At another, he described the leader of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer, as the skipper of a cruise ship that had been hijacked by Somali pirates.

Johnson also appealed to social and cultural issues that resonate with the Conservative rank and file. He vowed to defend Britain’s history and to oppose revisionist interpretations of Conservative heroes like Winston Churchill.

And Johnson invoked Margaret Thatcher, another of his Conservative predecessors, to defend tax increases imposed by the government to compensate for massive pandemic-related spending. Thatcher, he said, would not have ignored “this meteorite that has just crashed through the public finances.”

For all the references to Conservative icons, however, Johnson’s speech amounted to a remarkable repudiation of the traditional guiding principles and governance record of his party.

The Conservatives have long been the party of business, yet Johnson, in effect, put the onus on firms to break their addiction to a low-wage economy. The Tories have led the government since 2010, yet Johnson spoke of the last decade as if some other party had been in charge.

To political analysts, Johnson appeared to be launching something new for the post-pandemic, post-Brexit era: a party that combines the free-spending, interventionist impulses of social democrats with the anti-immigration instincts of the Brexiteers who agitated to leave the European Union in 2016. His party was committed to “radical and optimistic Conservatism,” he said.

Johnson’s rhetorical acrobatics showcased a politician who has managed, time and again, to defy political gravity. His 40-minute speech, in a hall packed with party faithful, contrasted with the more subdued, sometimes sparsely attended, appearances by his Cabinet ministers in previous days. It underscored the prime minister’s complete control over the Conservative Party.

Still, as Britain confronts painful adjustments, Johnson faces a convergence of hostile trends that could test this high-wire act. Rising food and fuel prices are straining consumers; gas shortages have forced motorists to wait for hours to fill up their tanks.

Johnson has portrayed these challenges as growing pains — evidence of an economy awakening from the pandemic and remaking itself to reap the benefits of a high-wage, highly skilled future.

For ordinary people, however, the specter of fuel and food shortages as the autumn closes in harks instead to the 1970s and the period of strikes and soaring prices that newspapers called the “winter of discontent.”

Even some members of his own party seemed unconvinced, with one influential Conservative lawmaker, Tom Tugendhat, writing on Twitter that “rising wages are great unless prices rise faster. Inflation matters — it’s about what we can afford and how families make ends meet in a tough month.”

Critics also disputed Johnson’s claim that Brexit had allowed Britain to strike a new submarine alliance with the United States and Australia. Britain has long enjoyed an intelligence relationship with these nations, and national governments control defense within the EU.

Johnson tried to draw a new dividing line with the opposition Labour Party, which he painted as welcoming uncontrolled immigration — and the resulting low wages — while the Conservatives seek training and better pay for British workers.

Asked in an interview this week how Britain would deal with the immediate consequences of an economic transition that could take years, he echoed a phrase made famous by Thatcher: “There is no alternative.”

But Johnson’s comments dramatized the extent of his breach with her legacy. The party’s traditional relationship with business was strained over Brexit, which was opposed by major companies that took advantage of Europe’s massive single market. And in recent days, the prime minister has added to the tensions, chiding some businesses for what he said was a failure to invest in their workers.

While even his critics welcome the idea of moving away from a low-wage, low-skills economy, there could be pain ahead for Britons if the government’s policies cause inflation to spike and interest rates to rise. Much of the fiscal stimulus the government injected into the economy to cushion the pandemic’s blow — including paying most of the wages of people who had been sent home — has been wound down.

Johnson urged people to return to their offices but otherwise ignored cost-of-living issues. Instead he celebrated what he described as the unquenchable spirit of Britons. It was evident, he said, in the scientists who developed the AstraZeneca vaccine, the nurses of the National Health Service, and Emma Raducanu, the 18-year-old who won the U.S. Open tennis championship last month.

While those lines drew applause among Tories in the hall, the reaction from businesses across the country was far warier.

“Firms are dealing with a cumulative crisis in business conditions as supply chains crumple, prices soar, taxes rise and labor shortages hit new heights,” said the director-general of the British Chambers of Commerce, Shevaun Haviland, adding that “the economic recovery is on shaky ground.”

Asked in an interview this week how Britain would deal with the immediate consequences of an economic transition that could take years, he echoed a phrase made famous by Thatcher: “There is no alternative.” But Johnson’s comments dramatized the extent of his breach with her legacy.

British PM Boris Johnson has said that he will not allow uncontrolled immigration to UK. As criticism against the handling of Brexit continues to mount, Johnson said that they have relied on a broken and wrong model which relied on low wages and low productivity. This is the closest that Johnson has come to admitting that Brexit did create a shortage in labour in the UK.

Aiming to ease public fear after panic behind fuel crisis, British PM Boris Johnson has once again reassured the country of his administration's efforts to fix the shortage of fuel plaguing the country. He said that UK's supply chain will be fixed before Christmas.

Fuel crisis have started to ease, says UK PM Boris Johnson

Fuel crisis is stabilizing, assures UK PM Boris Johnson

If an emergency plan made by UK government is put to action by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, hundreds of British soldiers could be drafted to deliver fuel to fuel stations across the country. The fuel stations are running dry due to shortage and panic buying.

Johnson is expected to go in a huddle with senior members of the cabinet to decide on activating Operation Escalin. The meeting has been called after British Petroleum (BP) said that a third of its petrol stations had run out of main two grades of fuel. Association of petroleum retailers has said that 50-90 per cent of their members have reported having run out of fuel.

UK PM Boris Johnson may deploy army to address fuel crisis

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday that he wants to "re-establish cooperation", Macron's office said, amid a diplomatic crisis over a submarine contract with Australia.

Macron was left furious last week after Australia ditched a mega-deal to buy diesel submarines from France in favour of American nuclear-powered ones -- secured during secret negotiations facilitated by Britain.

In the conversation, which the Elysee said came at Johnson's request, the British prime minister said he hoped for cooperation "in line with our values and our common interests", such as the battle against climate change, securing the Indo-Pacific region and the fight against terrorism.

Macron told Johnson that "he is awaiting his proposals", his office said in a brief statement.

French fury over what it sees as a "stab in the back" over the submarine contract saw Macron recall the French ambassadors to Washington and Canberra in an unprecedented diplomatic protest.

But the French envoy in London remained at her post, with France's Europe Minister Clement Beaune dismissing London as a mere "third wheel" in the deal and a "junior partner" to the US.

Using franglais, Johnson this week appealed to France to "Donnez-moi un break", calling for calm after tempers flared in France, while also telling Paris to "prenez un grip" ("get a grip").

'Serious blow to trust'

The submarine spat brought relations between Paris and London to their worst since Britain's 2016 vote to leave the European Union.

Brexit has led to several disagreements between both nations, notably over fishing rights but also the still vexing issue of trade between mainland Britain and the province of Northern Ireland.

Migrant flows have also been a major irritant between Paris and London.

There remains, however, a willingness on both sides to continue close cooperation in defence matters, experts say.

The submarine deal "created a legitimate anger in France and clearly dealt a serious blow to trust and cooperation between France and the UK in a relationship already strained by years of post-Brexit disputes", said Hans Kundnani and Alice Billon-Galland, analysts at the Chatham House policy institute.

But they said "the reality is the two countries share a similar set of interests and partners in the Indo-Pacific and beyond, and will need to find ways to navigate current tensions".

If they succeed that could open the way for other Europeans to also contribute to security in Asia, they said.

France says UK's Boris Johnson offered to 're-establish cooperation'

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday (local time) asked the world to "grow up" to tackle Climate Change. He was addressing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). His words have come just a month before UN COP26 climate conference which is scheduled to take place in Glasgow October 31 onwards.

"We need all countries, every single one of you, to step up and commit to very substantial reductions by 2030, and I am absolutely convinced, I passionately believe that we can do it by making commitments in four areas and I want you to remember them - coal, cars, cash and trees," he said.

"We will have made this beautiful planet effectively uninhabitable -- not just for us but for many other species," he told the General Assembly.

Forcing wealthy nations to honour their UN climate fund pledges this week will "be a stretch", British Prime Minister Boris Johnson admitted ahead of a Monday meeting with global leaders aiming to do just that.

At the 2009 Copenhagen climate conference, rich nations promised to provide annual funding of $100 billion from 2020, for poorer nations to counteract the effects of climate change.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has said progress has been "disappointing", with developing countries receiving $79.6 billion in 2019.

"I think getting it all done this week is going to be a stretch," Johnson told reporters as he travelled to New York on Sunday to attend the UN General Assembly (UNGA), according to PA news agency.

He added that he saw the chances of getting it done before COP26 climate summit in Glasgow in November as "six out of 10".

"It's going to be tough but people need to understand that this is crucial for the world," he said.

He added that there were "real signs of progress" from China, the world's biggest emitter of carbon dioxide, even as COP26 president Alok Sharma said Sunday that Chinese President Xi Jinping had not yet confirmed his attendance at the conference.

Johnson will convene Monday's meeting of leaders along with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
"We only have a short time left. World leaders must deliver on their climate commitments ahead of @COP26," Johnson said in a tweet.

The UN climate fund is the main financing tool for the Paris Agreement, which calls for capping the rise in global temperatures at "well below" two degrees Celsius, and 1.5 C if possible.

The treaty calls for billions of dollars annually for poor nations already coping with floods, heatwaves, rising seas and superstorms made worse by climate change.

As well attending the UNGA, Johnson will visit the White House on his trip, days after the announcement of a new US-Australia-Britain security pact caused a deep rift with ally France.

He will also meet Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, known for his scepticism on climate change, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Asked if he would challenge Bezos on how much tax Amazon pays in the United Kingdom and workers rights, Johnson said he "certainly" would.

"But I will also be congratulating him on his massive forestry initiative. He's putting a huge amount into planting trees around the world," he said.

The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson carried out a reshuffling of his cabinet recently. While some leaders such as Priti Patel and Rishi Sunak were able to retain their positions, many others including Dominic Raab have been ousted.

Johnson took over the control of the country in July 2019 from Theresa May. Since then, this is his second reshuffle, the first one being in February 2020.

One of the main changes in the cabinet is the substitution of former foreign secretary Dominic Raab. Liz Truss will now be taking over from Raab, making history as she is now the second woman to serve in this role — the first one being Labour's Margaret Beckett in 2006-2007.

Raab has been removed from the position following criticism over his handling of the Afghan crisis. However, he retains his position as Deputy Prime Minister — he had also led the country when Johnson was in intensive care due to Covid last year. In addition to Deputy Prime Minister, Raab is now Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor.

Meanwhile, even after controversies and criticism, Priti Patel has managed to retain her position as the home secretary. The 49-year-old has been criticised for her handling of the migrant crisis, following conservative thought process and has also been previously accused of bullying civil servants. However, Johnson has remained loyal to Patel.

Rishi Sunak has also retained his position as the Chancellor. Sunak was appointed for the position during the 2020 reshuffle after Sajid Javid’s resignation. Within months of taking the office, the former businessman was tasked with bringing the British economy out of Covid crisis.

Sajid Javid will continue serving as the Health & Social Care Secretary — a position he took over after Matt Hancock resigned following allegations of breaking social distancing guidelines by kissing a colleague. The minister had to step in at a time when the country was beginning its fight against the Delta variant of coronavirus.

Replacing Gavin Williamson, Nadhim Zahawi has been promoted to education secretary. He was earlier the business minister and minister for vaccines.

The UK is currently enjoying a covid curb-free time as the cases have been declining and the government has been opening up the economy.

However, the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is about to warn the locals against an "uncertain" winter wave of coronavirus in the country.

As per local reports, Johnson will be warning British citizens next week when he addresses the nation to unveil a blueprint on how to avoid shutting down schools and pubs in the future.

The Prime Minister is set to announce some contingency measures such as social distancing, compulsory mask wearing and more in case the cases begin to increase again.

Johnson will also announce commencement of vaccination programme for 12 to 15-year-old children, as per reports. While UK’s JCVI has not yet approved vaccination for children, it has directed country’s chief medical officers to take a decision on the same.

"We're going to approach it as we have done through the pandemic: be prepared. If cases become a problem and hospitalisations become a problem then we will act," a senior government source was quoted by the Guardian.

There is also a chance that the Prime Minister will announce a rollout of the Covid passport at a larger scale, especially in nightclubs, pubs and other crowded public spaces.

Johnson has been seeking advice from medical experts to make sure a situation of another Covid wave or another nationwide lockdown can be avoided.

"There's a great deal of uncertainty about what's going to happen. We need to be prepared, we need to have options ready to go.
