Another scene has two sharing a candlelit dinner on the balcony of Amay's skyrise during a sudden power outage.&nbsp;<br><br>Both Irani and Tiwary are pitch-perfect as the dysfunctional duo. You can sense how uncomfortable they are together and how they want to move past but can't. Puja Sarup and Shreya Chaudhry Amay's girlfriend/colleague are also impactful in the limited screen time they have.</p>

<p>Bollywood hyped friendships to no end. For time immemorial, films on friends' friendships and the length one can go for BFFs have been one of the favorite subjects for makers. While filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya's film 'Uunchai' is centered around friendship, what makes it unique is how the protagonists belong to the wrong side of 60s. An age when companionship is sought the most and which is often never mentioned in pop culture.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
At the onset 'Uunchai' seems like a film about friendship and the length, the three main protagonists- Amit (Amitabh Bachchan), Om (Anupam Kher) and Javed (Boman Irani) - travel to fulfill the one last wish of their late friend Bhupen (Danny Denzongpa). A mountaineer by heart, Bhupen had wished to take his three friends once to the Everest Base Camp, a trek that he had done several times alone. The three friends have, of course, dilly-dallied with the idea for years, giving their lives and careers more importance.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Bhupen's unexpected death shakes them up and after initial hesitation from Om and Javed, the three decide to trek to the Everest Base Camp to sprinkle their late friend's ashes amid the mountains that he so dearly loved. The trek itself is complicated and while the three start prepping two months in advance, there are myriad hurdles that they have to face.&nbsp;<br />

From ailments to possessive wives (Neena Gupta in a stunning role), to mysterious new companions (Sarika) to indignant kids, to old family feuds, the three encounter several problems as they embark on a journey by road from Delhi to Kathmandu where they have to meet the rest of the troupe and their group captain Shraddha( Parineeti Chopra) to start their trek.&nbsp;<br />

Now, for most the thought of trekking in one of the toughest terrains of the world may seem unimaginable but its the love for their old friend that makes Amit, Om and Javed do the unthinkable. But does their willpower alone help them trek to the top? Or does their health pay a hindrance?&nbsp;<br />

Barjatya, best known for making family dramas like 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun', 'Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo', 'Hum Saath Saath Hain' makes a film that talks of eternal optimism and living life to the fullest age notwithstanding. But does it succeed in spreading that message, though? To a great extent yes. It helps that the film has stalwarts like Bachchan, Kher, Irani playing the lead protagonist- there is never a false note in their performance. Each plays their part well. Big B is the leader of the pack, slightly flawed, ambitious author Amit Srivastav who always wants to remain young and so writes for young readers. Irani plays a slightly henpecked husband to Neena Gupta's character who is never too sure of what can anger his wife. Kher resorts to his typical style of buffoonery to play his character Om who seems always complaining about something in life.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
While the film focuses on the three men, the women too do justice to their roles. Sarika, Neena Gupta are well cast and Parineeti Chopra as the trek guide delivers a credible act. I wish though, that the women were not well turned out for a film that is set in outdoors mostly. The nails are always done, the hair is beautifully blowdried and not tied while they trek through tricky bits.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The film's initial optimism and upbeat pace though slips drastically in the second half when the trek advances towards its destination. Writer Abhishek Dixit reports to a melodrama which at some portions feel unnecessary. The VFX is patchy with certain shots of Bachchan looking rather synthetic and obvious that it has not been shot in the actual location but with a green screen backdrop inside a studio.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The story also, after a point seem stretched and indulgent in its way. After all it is difficult to imagine three men in their 70s heading to a difficult base camp with an oxygen cylinder in tow. The film's conflicts are also not well-established.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
'Uunchai' scores mostly for its overall story. For it celebrates not just friendship but life altogether. It is also an important film for Hindi cinema where leads are mostly in their 20s or 30s and so it is refreshing to see three men in the 70s and 80s play lead roles in a film.&nbsp;</p>

Message-driven films have been the norm for a while now and most have taken the similar route of infusing humour in the narrative. YRF's latest 'Jayeshbhai Jordaar' falls in the same category where Ranveer Singh plays an uncanny superhero, fighting for the rights of women, in a patriarchal world.&nbsp;<br />

Jayesh and his wife Mudra (newcomer Shalini Pandey) are expecting their second child. They live in Pravingarh, a fictitious village in Gujarat, with Jayesh's bossy parents (Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak Shah) and their 9-year-old daughter Siddhi. A soft-spoken, meek man, Jayesh has the burden of being the son of the village chief who wants his son and daughter-in-law to give an heir to continue the family lineage. After six miscarriages (read abortions), the family is now desperate for a son and is ready to appease any god or goat in order to get their wish fulfilled.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
When the doctor slyly lets Jayesh know that another girl is on her way, he takes it upon himself to save his wife whom he loves dearly and knows will not be spared by his dominating, conservative parents. With six abortions, Mudra is already weak and Jayesh is aware that another abortion will just lead to her death. And so, he devices a rather convoluted plan to escape with his wife and daughter to a village in Haryana - where due to female infanticide, most men remain unmarried and who want to welcome women with open arms.&nbsp;<br />

As Jayesh escapes with Mudra and Siddhi, he has his entire village and the cops chasing them to teach them a lesson or two. Will he be able to protect his child ultimately forms the rest of the story.&nbsp;<br />

New director and writer Divyang Thakker takes the story to rural Gujarat which may have infrastructurally grown leaps and bounds but is shown to have archaic thinking. It is rather surprising to find Jayesh as a closet feminist, in a society that has alpha males and dominating matriarchs. Everyone around him, his parents and even his wife are more concerned about an heir than he himself. They are all by-products of the same society, and yet Jayesh sticks out like a sore thumb.&nbsp;</p>

The film solely rests on Ranveer's shoulder and the man proves his versatility in playing Jayeshbhai effectively. His Jayeshbhai is strikingly opposite to some of the characters the actor has played in the past. From well built, bare-chested Ram (another Gujarati character) in 'Goliyon ki Raasleela Ram Leela' or the menacing Khilji in 'Padmavat' and the recent Kapil Dev in '83'- Ranveer once again completely transforms himself to play a timid, meek character like Jayeshbhai who is bullied by him the father at all points in time, who is scared to speak about the ill practices of female infanticide to his parents even though he is guilty of being party to it. It's a delight always to watch Ranveer transform on-screen into different characters and 'Jayeshbhai Jordaar' is no different. Despite the film's over the top treatment, it is the film's leading man who truly shines.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Playing his wife, newcomer Shalini Pandey (of 'Arjun Reddy' fame) has a limited scope on screen as the film is written from the man's perspective. Boman Irani as the authoritarian patriarch and Ratna Pathak Shah as his wife are equally effective in their roles. The other actor who shines in the film is &nbsp;Jia Vaidya, as Jayesh and Mudra's firstborn. The young star plays the feisty, smart alec Siddhi with such ease and it is a delight to watch her on-screen.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Screenplay by Thakker and Anckur Chaudhry has its moments. There are scenes where Mudra realises what life possibly can offer when she is out of the stifling environment of her in-laws' home. The portions where Jayesh play acts to be the bossy, abusive husband just to please his parents draws in laughs too but near the climax, the film somewhat becomes a mish-mash, sometimes oversimplifying a grave issue at hand. The portion where Puneet Issar's character comes in is intended to draw in laughs but it plays out on screen rather clumsily and the effect is downright silly.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Also, the portion where Ranveer gives a strange analogy of wanting a kiss and making women of his village understand consent seems slightly convoluted. The scene is supposed to draw in some tears but is sketchily written and hence has no impact.&nbsp;<br />

Despite the film's desperate need to keep things light though, 'Jayeshbhai Jordaar' works, mainly because Ranveer plays his part so well and so convincingly that he brings a smile to the viewer's face. An issue-based film 'Jayeshbhai Jordaar' sure takes multiple liberties, where everything seems hunky-dory by the end of it, but still manages to win hearts for its message.&nbsp;<br />

'Jayeshbhai Jordaar' review: Ranveer Singh proves his versatility in a film that keeps things light

<p>Ranveer Singh transforms himself into a rural Gujarati man in writer-director Divyang Thakkar's new film 'Jayeshbhai Jordaar'.<br />

The trailer of the film was unveiled on Tuesday on social media and has Singh playing a man who is under pressure to produce a son. He himself is the son of the local village chief (Boman Irani) and Jayeshbhai's wife (Shalini Pandey) is expecting the couple's second child. Since their first child is a daughter, the family is hoping that Jayesh's wife produces an heir, that is, a son to continue the family legacy forward.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Things go awry when Jayesh realises that his second child is also going to be a girl and he decides to run away with his family to avoid his family killing the unborn child.&nbsp;</p>

The maker of the soup, Raghuvir Mehta (Rajkummar Rao) and his associates including sexologist Dr Vardhi(Boman Irani) are summoned by the investigating officers.</p>

<p>The film begins on a promising note, almost hinting at a mystery thriller. But the narrative soon moves to flashback recounting Raghuvir's various failed attempts at becoming an entrepreneur.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Like many households in Gujarat, Raghuvir belongs to a business family where his Uncle (Manoj Joshi) and cousin (Sumeet Vyas) have thriving businesses. Raghu, on the other hand, has been struggling to find his footing. Married to the love of his life Rukmini ( Mouni Roy), all he wants is to make her happy and make his family financially secure.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A chance encounter with an Indian investor (Paresh Rawal) and another dubious businessman in China gives Raghuveer a crackling idea. To sell magic soup in India to those suffering from sexual problems. Pitched as a Chinese aphrodisiac and recommended by Dr Vardhi, the magic soup starts selling like hot cake- benefitting not just Raghuvir but others who are associated with him.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It's an underground business where stakes are low and as Raghuvir and Vardhi grow as a brand, his family gets suspicious about his business- details of which are not known to them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>China and India are known to be the most populated countries in the world. So it surely is a great idea, to combine the two countries in a film that aims to talk about sexual health. While the message is delivered, it isn't the most effective.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Writers Niren Bhatt and Karan Vyas try to merge two very different but common topics. sex and the inhibitions that Indian society has while talking about it and entrepreneurship- an underdog managing to get a breakthrough after the initial struggle. On paper the idea may have seemed a good one- and why not. Selling Chinese aphrodisiac in a conservative town of Gujarat does ensure chuckles. But the film falters at the execution level.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The cast is great. From the ever-dependable Rajkummar Rao to the amazing Boman Irani to even the cameos by Gajraj Rao and Paresh Rawal- the actors fit seamlessly in their respective roles. The two leading men- Rao and Irani- get the local accent well and they never slip from their character. The two have the best lines and scenes and complement each other well- much like their characters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Paresh Rawal, Sumeet Vyas, and Gajraj Rao have cameo appearances but are delightful in their limited screen time. Wish the writers had fleshed out a bit more on these characters and even on the two women in the film- Mouni Roy and Amyra Dastur.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The film's narrative seems overstretched and the first half appears quite tedious. One doesn't know where the story is headed really. It begins with a mysterious death and interrogation but soon becomes the story of how Raghuveer struck gold with his magic soup and you keep wondering what happened to the case in hand.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Pokhran test&nbsp;of 1998 is perhaps one of the most iconic incidents of Indian defence. It's something that the Indian scientists, the intelligence, and the army are proud of- and rightfully so. A film based on the historic incident should ideally make for an interesting watch. Afterall, there is so much to learn from the covert operations that made India a nuclear state. There is so much to feel proud of the&nbsp;historic past. But does director Abhishek Sharma's film 'Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran' - based on the incident- induce any such feelings?&nbsp;Not quite.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
'Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran' weaves together the story of how India secretly conducted nuclear tests in Pokhran, Rajasthan between May 11 and 13 in 1998. The tests, in the film, are attributed to six individuals. John Abraham plays IAS officer Ashwat Raina, the leader of the pack who puts together a team of intelligence and army officers and scientists to carry out the secret operation. They have limited time in hand, we are told. But with Ashwat breaking into lectures about how nothing comes before motherland, and everything is for the country, the motley group seem to be charged up and fight against the odds.&nbsp;</p>

With dollops of fiction and juvenile depiction of the real incident, 'Parmanu's' narrative dwindles right from the beginning. You almost laugh out loud at the way Abraham's character goes on to explain China and US's nuclear might and why there is a need for India to conduct the said tests in front of some samosa chewing government officials. It also doesn't help that the film is very poorly edited- there are too many loose ends, too many empty spaces between dialogues where the characters are not doing much which&nbsp;slackens the pace to a great extent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Written by Abhishek Sharma, Sanyukta Shaikh Chawla and Saiwyn Quadras, the film also gives the viewers doses on nationalism and nation-building at regular intervals. Some of the scenes where Abraham (again) propagates how they are building tha nation's future to his unsuspecting teammates are yawn-inducing and do no good to the narrative.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
We get the film's intent though. Credit should be given to the makers for choosing a story like this for mainstream cinema. But is that enough to make it an engaging watch?&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the second half, the pace picks up, especially near the climax. The scenes where the scientists and intelligence officer try to cheat the hovering American satellites as they lay the base for the test are quite thrilling.&nbsp;</p>

The sparks are there but they don't add up to an otherwise boring film. It also doesn't help that the scenes are written with very little background research making the total film unintentionally funny.&nbsp;<br />

Abraham, in a role that Akshay Kumar has played in a number of films in the recent past, plays the national hero diligently. His character is loosely based on APJ Abdul Kalam- the architect of the Pokhran tests- and is supposed to be maverick. But Abraham slips every now and then because of a poorly written screenplay. Diana Penty is there only to add a bit glamour to the otherwise all-male team.&nbsp;</p>

So does 'Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran' work ultimately? It's got its heart in the right place- but it somehow overlooks the years of work that a lot of people put in to make the tests successful, ultimately trivialising it with a badly written script which plays to the gallery.&nbsp;</p>


We get the film's intent but it is ultimately let down by a badly written screenplay.

But with Ashwat breaking into lectures about how nothing comes before motherland, and everything is for the country, the motley group seem to be charged up and fight against the odds. With dollops of fiction and juvenile depiction of the real incident, 'Parmanu's' narrative dwindles right from the beginning. You almost laugh out loud at the way Abraham's character goes on to explain China and US's nuclear might and why there is a need for India to conduct the said tests in front of some samosa chewing government officials. It also doesn't help that the film is very poorly edited- there are too many loose ends, too many empty spaces between dialogues where the characters are not doing much which slackens the pace to a great extent. Written by Abhishek Sharma, Sanyukta Shaikh Chawla and Saiwyn Quadras, the film also gives the viewers doses on nationalism and nation-building at regular intervals. Some of the scenes where Abraham (again) propagates how they are building tha nation's future to his unsuspecting teammates are yawn-inducing and do no good to the narrative. We get the film's intent though. Credit should be given to the makers for choosing a story like this for mainstream cinema. But is that enough to make it an engaging watch? In the second half, the pace picks up, especially near the climax. The scenes where the scientists and intelligence officer try to cheat the hovering American satellites as they lay the base for the test are quite thrilling. The sparks are there but they don't add up to an otherwise boring film. It also doesn't help that the scenes are written with very little background research making the total film unintentionally funny. Abraham, in a role that Akshay Kumar has played in a number of films in the recent past, plays the national hero diligently. His character is loosely based on APJ Abdul Kalam- the architect of the Pokhran tests- and is supposed to be maverick. But Abraham slips every now and then because of a poorly written screenplay. Diana Penty is there only to add a bit glamour to the otherwise all-male team. So does 'Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran' work ultimately? It's got its heart in the right place- but it somehow overlooks the years of work that a lot of people put in to make the tests successful, ultimately trivialising it with a badly written script which plays to the gallery.
