Ram Gopal Varma's 'Guns & Thighs' trailer storms the net

Sachin: A Billion Dreams follows a structure that is not a documentary yet a film with docu-like narration. Sachin fan or not, the movie brings forth the emotion that every Indian felt when Sachin came to bat. Directed by Emmy-nominated James Erskine, it is definitely an experiment when it comes to our box office.

What’s it about

Well, you know the story… it’s about the fantastic journey of Sachin Tendulkar from the time when he was a mischievous kid, to that moment when he bid farewell to cricket and left many in tears. His childhood is shown through a dramatic representation, through actors who play his little self, as well as his family and coach, Ramakant Achrekar. Once he enters professional cricket, rest of the movie is told through a series of snippets and real footage, narrated by none other than the God of Cricket himself.

What’s hot

It’s really strange that it took a foreigner to coach India to its World Cup win in 2011. Similarly, it also feels weird that it took a foreigner to make a movie on Sachin Tendulkar, and in the process, make the best movie on cricket – the sport. So let me say it, while Sachin may be a hero to billions, James Erskine’s taut direction is the hero of the film. Not only has he captured the spirit of cricket and its effect on India through Sachin’s journey, he also makes sure that you don’t ever feel that it is a documentary. Rather, you feel that you are a part of the journey, or simply putting in better words, you are reliving the best part of your childhood. If you are a ’90s kid and have breathed cricket like me, you will understand what I mean. What I liked the best about Sachin: A Billion Dreams is that it is not entirely about Sachin. It’s also a journey of Indian cricket. It’s also the story of his teammates and above all it is a celebration of his fans, who have cheered him, booed him but stayed with him throughout his career.

Some of the best moments to cheer for, during the film, were not even about Sachin. Perhaps it’s that wicket of Aamir Sohail that Venkatesh Prasad flicked during the 1996 World Cup, or when Laxman and Dravid guided India to a historic win in the 2001 series against Australia, or Dhoni’s iconic six that helped us win the World Cup. Sachin has not made it all about himself. But through these moments, he made us realise that Cricket is his everything, and sometimes it even came before his family. So when he talks about the infamous match-fixing scandal, you can feel the pain of betrayal he felt over certain colleagues. There are also many interesting tidbits about his life and career that you would easily lap up. Like, do you know which song Sachin always listens to when he feels down? Yes, the film answers it!

But it’s his family moments that gives the movie its heartwarming appeal. The film begins with videos showing Sachin holding his kids after their birth. This itself indicates how important his family is to him. Be it his cheesy love story with wife Anjali, who stood with him through the bleakest of times, or his emotional state when his father passed away on the eve of World Cup ’99 – it’s these moments that make us realise that the God is as human as any of us. Only he has used his adversities to rise up again like a phoenix. If there are enough moments to cheer about, there are also a few moments that will leave you teary-eyed.

Coming to technical values, both the editing and cinematography are top-notch and help make the movie an engaging watch throughout. AR Rahman’s background score is perfect – it is thumping at times, but it never overshadows the moments. And the use of Vande Mataram song during the World Cup final is a master-stroke.

What’s not

I don’t know how the movie will appeal to the viewers who have never experienced Sachin in his prime – the ones who associate cricket with IPL and the T20 format. Or even those who have never been a fan of cricket. Even though the movie addresses the darker history of Indian cricket, like the match-fixing scandal and the Greg Chappell travesty, I feel the movie played a bit safe in those moments. The monkey-gate incident is completely ignored. Also, Sachin never reveals how it was to be playing under Ganguly, Dravid and Dhoni, after his rather unsuccessful stints as the skipper of the Indian cricket team.

Sachin, as a narrator, was a bit stiff, but then he was never an actor. However, he was rather free when he was around cricketing equipment.

What to do

Sachin: A Billion Dreams is a movie strictly for cricket fans which basically means the entire country right? It's a good piece of cinema and whether you are a Sachin fan or not, the movie is bound to make youe motional. Sachin: A Billion Dreams is highly recommended. Just make sure you cheer with the rest of the audience …Sachin…Sachin…!!

The media would like us to believe that Baahubali 2 and Dangal are neck-to-neck in a race for the top spot at the box office. Stories of Baahubali 2 beating Dangal proved to be premature and the latter’s success in China indicates that the bets are still open.

Being the products of two very different film industries, and having been released months apart from each other, these films are not competing with each other on any level. On the contrary, both are parts of the same unfolding story of Indian entertainment industries’ survival strategies in the present time. An important element of the story is the search for new markets. The success of both films suggests that dubbing is an important strategy for expanding beyond domestic markets.

Dubbing films into other languages is a well-established practice in India in general and South India in particular. Paidipaala, one of the leading authorities in the Telugu cinema industry, points out that roughly 2300 films dubbed from other languages were released in Telugu alone till 2010. This figure accounts for close to one-third of the total number of films released in that language. He also notes that the practice of dubbing films from one Indian language into another dates back to the 1930s. Therefore, one can say that dubbed films are almost as old as the talkie itself in India.

Till the 1990s, much of the dubbing traffic in the industry was among the four major south Indian languages, namely, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Dubbing into and from Hindi was rare. The success of the Hindi dubbed version of Roja, directed by Mani Ratnam in 1992, secured national recognition for the film’s director. However, it was not Mani Ratnam’s hit but the entry of Hollywood into the picture that disrupted the steady state economics of dubbing.

The viewers of independent India grew up watching Hollywood and other imported films in English, a language most of them never understood. Of course, lack of comprehension of English did not prevent Indian viewers from claiming Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Sylvester Stallone as their idols. At the same time, the share of international films at the Indian box office remained to be only a tiny fraction. This situation, however, changed with the release of Jurassic Park (1993) in India in 1994. Film researcher Nitin Govil points out in his book, Orienting Hollywood: A Century of Film Culture Between Los Angeles and Bombay, that Jurassic Park was released in India with 110 prints—an impressive number for those days. Of these, 82 prints were in Indian languages.

By the late 1990s, most Indian viewers were watching films imported from Hollywood and Hong Kong alike in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu or Marathi, but not English. In 2015, Hollywood films entered the 100 crore club in India. Film industry observers point out that this was largely facilitated by two factors: the growth of multiplexes and dubbing.

Regardless of the claims made by Hindi cinema, the fact of the matter remains that it was after Hollywood’s success with dubbing, that a national film market became a possibility in India. Interestingly, it was enterprising Tamil filmmakers who made the earliest attempts to emulate Hollywood’s saturation release strategy on the national scale. Much of the credit for the replication of Hollywood’s strategy goes to Rajnikanth, whose 2007 Tamil film Sivaji did so well in the original Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions that a Hindi version was released in 2010. Needless to add, that version too did well at the box office. S. Shankar, the director of Sivaji, teamed up with Rajnikanth to make Enthiran, which was simultaneously released in Tamil and Telugu and Hindi as well.

Enthiran, or Robot—the Hindi dubbed version, was a game changer: it was perhaps the first film released after the 1950s to have competed at the box office with the top-line productions of different languages across the country. In Karnataka, where there is an unofficial ban on dubbing into Kannada, all three versions of the film were released. It is not difficult to see how much the two Baahubali films owe to the pioneering efforts of the Rajnikant-Shankar duo. Indeed, productions on the scale of Baahubali could not have been attempted if it wasn’t for the possibility of tapping into markets that are opened up by dubbing.

From the 1990s onwards, the Mumbai industry too started expanding its markets. However, its focus was largely on overseas viewers, and justifiably so because they usually pay a much higher price per ticket. Notwithstanding the success of a few films like Chennai Express (2013) in the southern states, Hindi cinema’s market was and continues to be, small in comparison with any of the four major south Indian cinemas on their home turf. Whether or not Chulbul Pandey speaks in Tamil or Putonghua in Dabangg 3, satellite television has already given us a glimpse of what entertainment looks like in the age of globalisation: foreign-looking characters will insist on speaking to us in Indian languages.

SRK, as he is popularly referred to by the fans, spoke at TED Talks in Vancouver two weeks ago. The theme of the show was ‘Future You’ and the actor was at his wittiest best.

Great with words, SRK’s talk was all about love, compassion and unification of the world. He describes himself to the audience as: "I sell dreams and I peddle love to millions of people back home in India, who assume that I am the best lover in the world."

"I've also been made to understand there are lots of you here who haven't seen my work, and I feel really sad for you. That doesn't take away from the fact that I'm completely self-obsessed, as a movie star should be," SRK said.

The first Indian actor invited to speak at TED Talks, he gave the internet a lot to talk about and introspect. From perils of social media to how humanity is in general and how we should move ahead from here.

The actor also spoke about how disturbed his family is with the rumours that his youngest child AbRam is the "love child" of his eldest son Aryan.

"Four years ago, my lovely wife Gauri and me decided to have a third child. It was claimed on the net that he was the love child of our first child who was 15 years old. Apparently, he had sown his wild oats with a girl while driving her car in Romania. And yeah, there was a fake video to go with it. And we were so disturbed as a family. My son, who is 19 now, even now when you say "hello" to him, he just turns around and says, "But bro, I didn't even have a European driving license," SRK said.
He describes himself to the audience as: "I sell dreams and I peddle love to millions of people back home in India, who assume that I am the best lover in the world." "I've also been made to understand there are lots of you here who haven't seen my work, and I feel really sad for you. Watch the full video: SRK was last seen in the movie, Raees and is expected to host the Indian edition of TED Talks. He is also working on several film projects. (WION)

2016 can be called a successful year for the Indian cinema industry, owing to movie releases that offered to break stereotypical narratives, touched upon issues often ignored by cinema and saw some brilliant display of acting. Two movies that released last year ‘Dear Zindagi’ and ‘Udta Punjab’, not only grossed at the box office but also received critical acclaim. There is however one other reason why it became a strong hit-- the music score. No points for guessing, but the music is lent by Amit Trivedi.

Akshay Kumar starrer Jolly LLB 2 is a movie directed by Subhash Kapoor. Huma Qureshi, Annu Kapoor and Saurabh Shukla are the other prominent actors of the film.

Storyline: 3/5

The story is about an ambitious lawyer from Lucknow, the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh in India, and his tussle with a seasoned player in the same profession. Needless to say, the plot revolves around a case, and quite a common one in India.

As the story isn't complicated, it gave ample space for execution and thus rightly fits the scheme of things.

Direction: 4/5

There are two parts of this movie that make you swoon over it, one of them is the direction. The devil is in the details and Subhash Kapoor knows that well.

He kept the movie compact and even sprinkled a bit of Kashmir and a bit of patriotism, without missing on tiny details. Approximation to real life courts added to the authenticity of the scenarios.

Acting: 4/5

Akshay Kumar did justice to the film in his own sort of uptight funny manner and definitely upped the ante by adding star power to Jolly LLB sequel. Annu Kapoor is marvellous. You need to watch him to believe it.

2016: When Indian movies tackled stories of homophobia and abuse

Indian actress Radhika Apte on Tuesday slammed a reporter when she was reportedly asked about the leaked nude scenes in the last release, Parched.

"Sorry, your question is very ridiculous. Controversies are made by the people like you. You saw the clip, you shared with other people, so you made the controversy," Indian news agency, IANS, quoted her as saying.

Parched is a Bollywood flick about four women from a remote area of western Indian state of Rajasthan that still suffers from age-old traditions.

The filmmaker and the movie's actors, including Apte, have often reiterated that the movie is more than just about the nude scenes between her and co-actor Adil Hussain.

"I am an artist... if I am required to do a certain job then I will do it. If you get out of your cocoon and look at the world cinema and what people are doing abroad and that is too successfully then you would have not probably asked this question," she told the media.

"I am not ashamed of anything. People who are embarrassed about their own body are curious about other's body. So if you want to see a naked body tomorrow, see yourself in the mirror rather than my clip. Then only we can talk about this."

An Indian daily, Deccan Chronicle, further reported that when the journalist apologised about ‘hurting’ her, Radhika said, “I feel hurt? You need to get over yourself, you’ll get over it.”

It's not just the India-Pakistan borders that are simmering amid the escalating tension between the two countries. One of the world's most diverse film industries, Bollywood, has also suffered drastically.

The Uri attack has left Bollywood divided over the issue of Pakistani actors living in India. Indian heart-throb Salman Khan to pair up with Chinese star Zhu Zhu in 'Tubelight'

Western India's Rajasthan state government through its home minister Gulab Chand Kataria today assured protection to Bollywood star Salman Khan's 'missing' driver Harish Dulani, a key witness in the chinkara poaching case, who was driving the jeep used by Khan during the alleged chinkara hunt in Jodhpur in 1998, has maintained that he had not come forward earlier due to threats to his life.

"Who has written it is yet not confirmed. I think he has sent it to many others as well. I have talked with Jodhpur commissioner and asked him even if the witness does not want it, the police should be sent there and talk to him. May be he is not writing the letter, someone else is writing it," Kataria said.

He assured help to Dulani in all situations and also guaranteed him of full protection.

"Two things should be made clear after meeting him personally. One is when did he ask for security in the past and when did we not give it. And, now what help he wants from us.we will help him in all situations. We will guarantee him of full protection," he added.

Dulani was reported to be 'missing' since 2002, which weakened the prosecution's case against Khan and had surfaced two days after the actor was acquitted.

He stuck to his claim that the actor had shot the animal dead. However, the Rajasthan high court in its verdict had said the pellets recovered from the chinkaras were not fired from Khan's licensed gun.

Khan was jailed in 2007 for nearly a week for shooting an endangered chinkara. Khan's lawyer, while arguing the case in the court, had contended that the actor had been falsely framed in these cases, merely on the statements of Dulani.

The lawyer argued that Dulani was never available to them for cross-examination, and hence, his statements could not be relied upon in the conviction of Khan.

He had also contended that both the cases have been built on circumstantial evidences and there was no eye-witness or any material evidence against Salman.
