The new Bollywood film Padman, starring Akshay Kumar, is the story of how India’s “menstrual man” Arunachalam Muruganantham came up with a revolutionary new method of producing cost effective sanitary pads. This helped to improve menstrual health and provide an income for rural women in India and beyond.

India is the leading film market in the world, with 2.2 billion tickets sold in 2016. One of the aims of this new comedy-drama is to reach a wide audience, create awareness and challenge the taboos and stigma surrounding menstruation in India.

It’s been more than ten years since Arunachalam invented a machine to create low cost sanitary pads and began distributing them to rural women across India. Traditionally, rural women use old cloth, saris or bed sheets as sanitary towels; sometimes also using sand, dirt or ash for heavy days. The use of pads is increasing and now six out of ten women in India have access to disposable menstrual products.

This varies greatly across states – from as high as 90% in Tamilnadu, Kerala and Delhi to as low as 30% in rural Bihar. But disposable pads are expensive and the biodegradable pads made by Arunachalam are cheaper and last longer.

Many non-governmental organisations around the globe, such as Days for Girls, focus on the need for hygienic menstrual products and make and distribute reusable pads. The argument is that the provision of pads enables girls to stay in school. One in four girls in India miss one day or more in school during menstruation.

Wider issues

But access to pads is only one issue. Girls might also miss school because of period pain, lack of toilet facilities, the fear of staining clothes or the views of teachers and family – last year, students were allegedly forced to strip in a school to see who was menstruating. This is not just an issue for India: one in ten girls in some parts of sub-Saharan Africa miss school because of their periods and even in the UK period poverty causes similar issues.

The wider issue that Padman highlights is the stigma and taboos that surround menstruation. In India, restrictions include not being allowed to enter religious shrines, touch people or food in the kitchen, or touch or eat pickles. Taboos around periods exist in almost every country in the world, meaning many women and girls face discrimination. Global stigmas and practices include:

Nepal: Chaupadi is a social tradition associated with the menstrual taboo in western Nepal which forces women and girls to sleep outside their house, often in a cowshed, while they have their period. Chaupadi was banned in 2005 and made a criminal offence in 2017, but one young woman has already died in January 2018 because of it.

Japan: Women cannot be sushi chefs as menstruation affects their sense of taste. But women are fighting back and opening their own restaurants.

Afghanistan: Women are told washing or showering during their periods can lead to infertility.

Bolivia: Women are told putting used sanitary pads in the bin with other rubbish can lead to cancer.

US: 42% of women have experienced period shaming, 58% felt embarrassed and 73% hide pads and tampons from view.

UK: 26% of girls did not know what to do when they first started their period and 48% are embarrassed by their period.

It’s interesting to note that the first major film to tackle this issue focuses on a male entrepreneur. Yet there are many other organisations and inspirational individuals, usually women, working to challenge the stigma around periods. For example in India, there is Aditi Gupta, founder of the menstrupedia comic, which aims to educate children about menstruation. Writer and peace campaigner Radha Paudel is also challenging chaupadi in Nepal.

Education is key to changing attitudes to menstruation and in order to do this we need to engage men and boys. Perhaps male hero Padman is a first step.

Being able to manage menstruation safely and without stigma is a basic human right which many women and girls are denied. The silence and stigma around menstruation cannot be replaced by a new form of sanitary pad; it can however be challenged by discussion and awareness and Padman can perhaps play an important role in starting the conversation.

Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan congratulate Under 19 Cricket team for historic win

It was really the Nandita Das–Nawaz Siddiqui’s conversation & discussion relating to their forthcoming film Manto, in the just concluded KALAM Lit Fest in Kolkata, that got me thinking about whether committed and powerful art-house actors really had the clout or charisma to seduce mass audiences to their brand of cinema, and I suddenly found myself getting into flashback mode.

The early seventies in Indian cinema witnessed an exciting phase emerge. Shyam Benegal’s Ankur – literally and metaphorically – smashed Bollywood’s carefully protected and preserved monopolistic glass ceiling to serve notice of a new form of cinema coming into existence.

Shabana Azmi’s sensational debut was followed by equally stunning debuts by three others – Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil and Om Puri. They formed a formidable quartet headlining most of the path-breaking films of that decade. The middle-class intelligentsia – sick to the teeth of Bollywood’s escapist hi-jinks and absurd larger-than-life portrayal of clichéd and predictable storylines - embraced this new cinema with enthusiasm. They welcomed actors, treatment, subjects and narratives that entertained, enriched and empowered in one sublime sweep.

These four actors were the true stars of this new and powerful arthouse cinema, authored by a dazzling galaxy of brilliant, creative minds, determined to push the envelope in pursuit of good, intelligent cinema without full stops. Apart from Bengal, other names that blazed the neons included Govind Nihalani, M.S. Sathyu, Aparna Sen, Gautam Ghosh, Sai Paranjpye, Muzaffar Ali, Kalpana Lajmi, Kundan Shah, Saeed Mirza, Ketan Mehta, Shekhar Kapoor.

These actors culturally, intellectually and even emotionally bonded to this brand of cinema; this amazing lot believed and pursued with passion and purpose, a cinema that was rooted to reality, humanistic in vision, non-formulaic in approach and definitely light years away from the overt, crass, over-the-top, populist, escapist razzmatazz offered by Bollywood’s masala factory headlined by glamorous stars dedicated to posturing, not acting.

It was [ironically] one of this very fab four, Shabana Azmi, who first sent out tremors within this artistic fraternity by moving across to do an out-and-out commercial film [Fakira] with this devastatingly handsome matinee idol, the [late] Shashi Kapoor. While most expressed shock, surprise and disappointment, Ms. Azmi offered an informed retort. She explained that while she was a proud product of the art cinema and that everything she received till date – audience, love, admiration, respect, awards, great directors, films – was because of that, she believed that actors also needed to, at some point, see the big picture.

Shabana Azmi insisted her commercial foray was for three reasons. One, experimenting is essential for creative artistes for self-growth. Two, experience first hand, what this huge platform, that so mesmerised stars and mass audience, was all about. Most importantly – and this is central to her argument and this piece – her presence in commercial cinema, she believed, would mean that her commercial films would reach out to more people at more places [than her brand of niche cinema] and induce at least some of them to patronise her art films and thus help the movement that they all were committed to. I remember Smita Patil dismissing this rationale outright, stating this kind of conversion can never happen because these two cinemas – their motivations and dynamics – were worlds apart!

A while back, brilliant actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui made a similar remark when he stated that he was delighted with the accolades he was receiving for his cameo [Bajrangi Bhaijan & Raees] and hoped that, at least, some of the zillion fans who stormed the halls to rocket these films to dizzy heights, would patronise his non-commercial, small films.

The point is: Can this ever happen? Has it ever happened?

Can true-blue actors, participating in mainstream, over-the-top, star-driven commercial cinema, ever hope to impact, influence, motivate or inspire even a fraction of the mass audience, to gravitate towards the niche films that they showcase and celebrate?

History clearly says: No!

Admittedly, Shabana did tons of mainstream films with top line commercial directors but, to be brutally honest, does anyone who loves masala films and their superstars, ever care to remember Shabana Azmi in Amar Akbar Anthony, Parvarish or any other super-hit films from big directors she participated in? The same thing can be said about Naseer, Om [and late bloomer] Smita Patil.

In Namak Halal or Shakti, was Shabana a memorable, critical, relevant component compared to Amit, Shashi or Praveen Babi?

Now cut to Arth, Ankur, Nishant, Bhumika, Aakrosh, Sparsh, Chakra, Masoom, Mandi, Anthony Pinto, Ardh Satya, Katha, Paar and tons of similar gems where these four dazzled with their scorching portrayals, defining the linear truth. Is there any comparison, in terms of contribution, between the two brands of cinema that these four graced?

It was an interesting situation for the mainstream blokes, getting these powerhouse titans of the art house cinema meant a triumph, making them trophy catches. For the actors, it was a taste of starry extravagance they had heard about, non-existent in their modest workspace. Barring very few exceptions, sadly, both were losers because – as the late Smita Patil rightly pointed out – they are two completely different brands of cinema with different narratives, focus, compulsion and the twain can never meet. This is equally true when big stars, bitten by the acting bug, attempt to do parallel cinema or – as the Big B attempted in Yudh – enter TV serial space. More often than not, they are 5-star disasters!

Nawaz Siddiqui, Irfan Khan, Kay Kay Menon, Manoj Bajpayee, Konkona Sen Sharma, Richa Chadda, Rahul Bose, Adil Hussain, Kalki Kolechin, Radhika Apte are only some very fine actors whose talent are proven, but can they ever carry a commercial film on their shoulders? Will the mass audience pay to storm the theatres to see them?

This is not to devalue Nawaz Siddiqui’s talent or hope, but everything being equal and the Bollywood and our mass audiences being what they are, niche will remain niche and big-budget blockbusters will remain the big-budget blockbusters, driven by their own dazzling seductive package of customised requirements and compulsion.

Sure, Nawaz and gang’s performances continue to be appreciated, but to imagine that their role would motivate audiences to rush into patronising arthouse cinema is like saying that James Bond fans [Sean Connery] would definitely see Connery – synonymous with exotic locales, hot babes and deadly action – in non-Bond films [The Hill] with the same enthusiasm.

No way! Remember, mass audiences need to be, both shaken and stirred!

Everything being equal and the Bollywood and our mass audiences being what they are, niche will remain niche and big-budget blockbusters will remain the big-budget blockbusters.

Opinion: Can Arthouse actors ever connect with masala audiences?

When it comes to stardom of Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, it is purely limitless.

Wooing fans all over the world, Shah Rukh is now also a favourite of former One Direction singer Zayn Malik who is known for his good looks and musical hits like I Don't Wanna Live Forever, PILLOWTALK and Dusk Till Dawn.

A British heartthrob in himself, Zayn, in an interview with an Indian fashion magazine revealed that he is a "big-time admirer of Shah Rukh Khan" and that he has even made his girlfriend and supermodel "Gigi Hadid watch Shah Rukh Khan's Devdas", which is "one of his all-time favourites".

The singer also revealed that he "loves Indian food" and said his "mom makes the best Indian food around.”

Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid have been very vocal about their relationship. They are frequently seen gracing the cover of magazines together, making public appearances hand-in-hand and dont't leave a chance to profess their love on social media.

Maintaining that states were under constitutional obligation to maintain law and order, the apex court had said that this duty also includes providing police protection to persons who are involved in the film, its exhibition and the audience watching it.

Some time ago, I was not at all alarmed and shocked to read Sanjay Dutt' s confession that he wanted to break a leg (hers, not his own) when his elder daughter Trishala expressed a desire to become an actress. On the contrary, I was impressed by his honesty.

Dutt knows better than most what young heroines have to go through in this film industry.

And the way heroes talk about their leading ladies would make even the most misogynistic pervert blush. I remember a top leading lady of the 1960s telling me about this he-man hero, a pukka ladies' man who would sit with his cronies on the set discussing his amorous exploits. One of them would turn the pages of a film magazine and point quizzically at the picture of every heroine featured. The he-man would nod in the affirmative or shake his head in the negative to indicate whether he had 'done' her or not.

Things haven't changed. For all the talk of gender equality among the heroes, there is still that backroom boys' talk about women that goes on in secret. There is a top-notch action hero of today, married to one of the most distinguished actresses of our times, who is in the habit of discussing lurid details of his heroines' bedroom activities with him. Who needs porn when you can get it straight from stud's mouth?

Wait, don't wince yet. There are so many stories I've heard about Dutt's adventures with leading ladies. I remember once, when he was shooting in Kolkata, everyone in the City of Joy was talking about how he vanished with the leading lady behind his vanity van for a good 45 minutes. Not inside the van, mind you, but behind. For all we know, Sanju Baba might have been discussing the script with your heroine.

Sanju Blah Blah?

We really don't need to get judgmental about what grown-up, consenting adults do when they're not working. But yes, many film families are wary of letting their daughters become part of the film industry.

I don't know whether Dharmendra threatened to break his eldest daughter's leg to keep her completely out of the limelight. The fact is, while the two sons - Sunny and Bobby Deol - were groomed to follow in their father's footsteps, we've never seen Dharmedra's daughter from his first marriage in even a photograph.

I know for a fact that Dharam ji - a gem of a man in other ways but not quite the epitome of the liberal Indian male - didn't' want his daughters from his second marriage with Hema Malini to become actresses. But Hemaji is made of sterner stuff than many star-wives who simply comply with their husband's patriarchal decisions.

I know for a fact that even today, girls from film families have to fight prolonged battles with their parents before getting into movies. Please note, Shah Rukh Khan's son is being readied for stardom. His daughter, we are told, is not keen on a movie career. And, I wonder if Boney Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan's daughters would be poised for a movie career if they didn't have persuasive, assertive actresses (Amrita Singh and Sridevi) for moms.

Before I leave you with that sobering thought, I must tell you about an incident that happened when Nawazuddin Siddiqui came home for dinner. His baby girl was just born and he proudly showed me her picture.

"I am sure she's going to be a great actor, like her father," I said sincerely.

Nawaz looked sadly at me for a while. "Please don't wish that on her," her said softly.

Even being the daughter of a major star can't save them from becoming victim to Bollywood's dark underbelly of misogyny and sexism.

The he-man would nod in the affirmative or shake his head in the negative to indicate whether he had 'done' her or not. Things haven't changed. Opinion: Many movie stars don't want their daughters in Bollywood. Here is why.

Anurag Kashyap and Shah Rukh Khan may belong to different cinematic universes but the filmmaker is determined to make at least one film with the superstar in his lifetime.

Incidentally, SRK and Kashyap, who know each other since their Delhi University days, came close to working on two occasions but ultimately couldn't.

While speaking to PTI, Kashyap said the 52-year-old actor was keen to work with him in No Smoking, a film which eventually went to John Abraham.

"He wanted to do No Smoking'and he was very upset when I went away from him. I also went to him with Allwyn Kalicharan. I wanted to do that with him and a big superstar from Hollywood. Everything was almost done but then again (it didn't happen).

"But we will work together. I won't go anywhere without making a film with Shah Rukh Khan... I will write a film that will lure him. He should be attracted to it, he should be dying do the film," he said.
Calling his relationship with SRK "strange", the director said he is in awe of the actor.

"He is my senior from university, he has been there like a big brother helping me. He is super successful. When he loves you, he approaches things like, in my struggling years, (he used to tell me), 'if you do what I tell you to do, your problems will disappear'. But I didn't want him to make my life," he said.

Kashyap also mentioned that he can fight with anyone but Shah Rukh.

"He is the only guy I can never speak up to. I can fight with the world but not him. If he scolds me, I'll sit in a corner and cry. He is someone I have this love for. I love him to death," he said.

The director revealed SRK often pokes fun at him, bullies him but he is charming as well.
Also Read: Rajinikanth's '2.0' to have its digital premiere on Amazon Prime As quoted in the daily, Raju Mahalingam, COO of Lyca Productions, said, "The overall revenue for a big film production can increase by 30 per cent. Since movies have now begun to open in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu in India, we hope to release them in all three languages in Saudi Arabia too. A new market in West Asia, where a substantial number of Tamil and Malayalees stay, will be a big boost for our movies.” The film is directed by Shankar and will be a sequel to the 2010 blockbuster "Enthiran", which had Rajinikanth in the lead role and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as the heroine. In "2.0", Bollywood star Akshay Kumar will play the antagonist and Amy Jackson will be seen as Rajinikanth’s love-interest. AR Rahman is producing music in the film with Nirav Shah on camera and Anthony at editing. The movie is projected as the most expensive movies India has ever seen and is produced by A Subhashkaran under his banner Lyca Productions on a budget of Rs 450 crores. The mega-budget sci-fi movie is expected to release in three languages, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. "2.0" was initially scheduled to hit the screens during the Republic Day weekend but its release has been pushed to April 15, 2018.

Rani Mukerji has always had a strong connect with the audiences and the actor believes people find her relatable because she never brings her real- life persona on screen.

In her new film Hichki, which is her first after the birth of her daughter Adira, Rani plays the role of a woman who does not let her speech disability come in the way of achieving her dream of becoming a teacher.

"Whenever I play a character in a film, I try to remove Rani Mukerji and emotionally connect with the part. If a person sitting in a cinema hall can forget who you really are and believes you are the character, that's the real victory for an actor," Rani told PTI in an interview.

"I want people to forget that they are watching a Rani Mukerji film and get invested in the character," she added.

The actor said she has always been attracted to complex roles and this was one of the main reasons to accept Hichki.

In the film, Rani plays a woman with Tourette syndrome, a condition that forces an individual to make involuntary repetitive movements or sounds.

"For somebody to take their weakness and turn it into strength... It holds a positive message. I truly believe that all of us have a weakness that we know but we try to camouflage it as we have to put up a hard exterior in front of the world. If one can make their weakness their strength, the world can become a good place."

Rani is not new to playing challenging roles. She played a deaf and blind woman in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black.

The actor said one has to be careful with such roles as there is always a probability to look like a caricature.

"It is with all my films. I take special care because it may become a caricature. There is always a thin line. I have been taking feedback on this film from day one. After every shot, I ensured that if I do the tick, it should appear natural. I would constantly check with Siddharth (director). It was important to look authentic."

The movie, produced by Yash Raj Films, also highlights the topic of literacy and Rani said the right to education cannot be gender specific.

"Education is the right of every human being, irrespective of the gender. In India, a state like Kerala has the highest percentage of literacy, we should take that as an example. Once there is a change in the attitude, it can make a huge difference. Both men and women are working today and education should not be gender specific."

Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced by Maneesh Sharma, Hichki will release across India on February 23, next year.

Soha Ali Khan is all set to don the producer's hat for a biopic on veteran lawyer Ram Jethmalani. The actress, along with her husband, actor Kunal Kemmu has started a production company called Renegade Films and their first film, the biopic, will be co-produced by Ronnie Screwala.

Speaking to a news agency, Khan expressed that how it is a challenging film to take up considering the living legend's repertoire of work. "It's a fascinating life story because Mr. Jethmalani is now 94 years old. He has had a career of over 70 years, and look at the people who he has represented. They range from politicians to notorious criminals... The task is not the story to tell, but the parts we will have to leave out or what we don't tell. And every bit is exciting," Soha was quoted as saying.

Soha's husband Kunal Kemmu will be playing the veteran lawyer on the big screen.

Khan admitted that making a two and a half hour movie on someone who's had such an illustrious life would be difficult. " We have a good partner in Ronnie Screwvala. Once we have a script ready, we will be locking a director, and once we have a captain to the ship, we will go full steam," she added.

Jethmalani has fought a number of high-profile cases in his 70-year long career. From appearing for appearing in the famous KM Nanavati versus State of Maharashtra case in 1959 to the multi-crore 2G scam in 2011, from being LK Advani's defence in the Hawala scam to fighting for Arvind Kejriwal in a defamation case filed by Arun Jaitley, Jethmalani's has been part of important cases.

The film is likely to go on floors sometime in 2018.
