Every kid should have an Uncle Charlie. That’s the sentiment voiced by J.R. Maguire early in “The Tender Bar,” and it’s hard to disagree. By the end of the movie, directed by George Clooney and adapted from J.R. Moehringer’s 2005 memoir, it’s clear that what J.R. means, most simply, is that every child should have an adult who loves them unconditionally: someone who listens, gives good advice and answers hard questions as truthfully as possible.

In movie terms, it doesn’t hurt if that person is also Ben Affleck. Uncle Charlie, a Long Island bartender who is loyal to his friends and family and devoted to his car (a beautiful blue-green Cadillac convertible), is like an older, 1980s-vintage version of Chuckie Sullivan, Affleck’s character in “Good Will Hunting.” He likes to drink, smoke, crack wise and philosophize, but his calling in life is to be there for a vulnerable, promising young man when no one else will.

Affleck is very good at this. He doesn’t oversell either Charlie’s cool or his warmth, and doesn’t let the audience or J.R. in on all of Charlie’s secrets. We see him mostly through the boy’s eyes, as a heroic, benevolent, somewhat mysterious figure, but Affleck’s weary, stoical demeanor suggests dimensions beyond what a child might comprehend. (The young J.R. is played by Daniel Ranieri; grown-up, retrospective narration is provided by the voice of Ron Livingston.) The nuances of Affleck’s performance help ground the movie in small, specific emotions. Its understatement, though, can be a limitation as well as a virtue.

The obvious thing to say about Charlie is that he’s a surrogate father. J.R.’s real dad (Max Martini) is an unreliable, largely absent, self-absorbed disc jockey. He sometimes calls, rarely shows up and lives mainly as a voice on the radio. (“The Voice” is his professional alias.) “The Tender Bar” begins when J.R. and his mother, Dorothy (Lily Rabe), move into her parents’ rambling house in Manhasset. Dorothy’s brother Charlie lives there too, as do a bunch of other cousins and siblings.

We don’t learn too much about them. The focus is on J.R.’s relationships with Dorothy and Charlie, and on his search for The Voice. Grandpa, in the splendidly cranky person of Christopher Lloyd, shows up now and again to swear or break wind, and once in a while to show a little tenderness.

J.R.’s second home is the bar, called the Dickens, where Charlie pours drinks for the regulars and dispenses what he calls “male science” to his nephew. In keeping with the joint’s literary name (there’s a fading likeness of Charles Dickens painted on the side of the building), Charlie keeps books as well as bottles on the shelves. He encourages J.R. to read, and then to write.

Dorothy is determined to send her son to Harvard or Yale, and the second half of the movie — with Tye Sheridan as an older J.R. — follows him to New Haven, where he makes a friend (Rhenzy Feliz) and falls in love (with a classmate played by Briana Middleton). He also puts aside his mother’s dreams of law school to concentrate on writing. He first envisions a novel about his youth, but everyone tells him that “the publishing world is turning toward memoir.”

It’s a nice little joke, though perhaps a bit anachronistic for 1986. The real J.R. Moehringer spent years as a journalist at The Los Angeles Times before writing “The Tender Bar,” but Clooney and the screenwriter, William Monahan, are true to the spirit of the book rather than faithful to the letter. Instead of forcing J.R.’s messy life into a neat plot, the movie skips across his life like a flat stone on the surface of a pond.

Which is also to say that it doesn’t go as deep as it might. Potentially dramatic material — paternal abandonment, maternal illness, unrequited love, alcoholism — is treated with a circumspection that can feel coy and cautious rather than subtle.

But when Affleck is around — especially with young Ranieri as his wingman and pupil — the laid-back vibe of “The Tender Bar” achieves its full measure of weary, wised-up charm. It’s not the kind of movie that will knock you out, but it won’t leave you with a headache and a dry mouth, either. It’s a generous pour and a mellow buzz.

'The Tender Bar': Rated R (smoke ’em if you got ’em). Running time: 1 hour 44 minutes. In theaters.

Twitter slams Ben Affleck as he blames alcoholism on bad marriage with Jennifer Garner

Hollywood superstar Ben Affleck never feels like he's getting any older.

"I look in the mirror and I keep on thinking there's going to be somebody who's 30 years old there," he told AFP.

"And you know what? There never is."

It has been more than two decades since Affleck shot to fame with "Good Will Hunting," in which veteran comedian Robin Williams played the mentor to Matt Damon's young prodigy. Spears calls out anchor for blaming her for breaking up with Timberlake

Affleck co-starred in the film and wrote the screenplay with his childhood friend Damon. The pair won an Oscar.

"I'm now close to or older than Robin (Williams) was when he played that part, which is shocking," Affleck, now 49, told AFP.

But there are benefits these days to playing characters who have "been down the road of life," such as the streetwise uncle he portrays in "The Tender Bar," hitting US theaters Friday.

"They don't necessarily tend to be the protagonist, and that is also often a good thing," said Affleck.

Heroes "basically have to hew to a certain set of virtues for the audience to identify with them, which inherently uncomplicates them in a way that makes it a little harder to play in a realistic way," he explained.

Ben Affleck happy to no longer be the young hero in 'Tender Bar'

This is possibly the first time that Ben Affleck has opened up about his divorce with Jennifer Garner and alcohol addiction that took a while for him to get out of.

Ben appeared at The Howard Stern Show and said, "Part of why I started drinking was because I was trapped."

Ben and Jennifer Garner’s 2017 divorce was a long time coming as he revealed, "I was like, ‘I can't leave because of my kids, but I'm not happy, what do I do?' And what I did was [I] drank a bottle of scotch and fell asleep on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution." The former couple eventually realised that the marriage was doing neither of them any good and that they didn’t want their relationship to "be the model that our kids see of marriage."

He added, "We had a marriage that didn't work. This happens. She's somebody I love and respect, but to whom I shouldn't be married any longer. We did it amicably. We did our best. Did we have moments of tension? Did we have disagreements over custody? Was stuff difficult for us? Did we get angry? Yes, but fundamentally it was always underpinned with a respect."

On his addiction, Ben said, "The cure for addiction is suffering, you suffer enough that something inside you goes, ‘I'm done’. I'm lucky because I hit that point before I lost the things that were most important. Not my career or money—it was my relationship with my kids." Ben Affleck's ex Jennifer Garner reacts to his and Jennifer Lopez's romance

And he believes that if he was still with Jennifer, he would "probably still be drinking."

This is possibly the first time that Ben Affleck has opened up about his divorce with Jennifer Garner and alcohol addiction that took a while for him to get out of. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner posed as a happy couple for years and share children together but not all was hunky dory at their residence as the last few years of their marriage took a toll on both of them and the former even soaked himself in alcohol. Ben appeared at The Howard Stern Show and said, "Part of why I started drinking was because I was trapped." Ben and Jennifer Garner’s 2017 divorce was a long time coming as he revealed, "I was like, ‘I can't leave because of my kids, but I'm not happy, what do I do?' And what I did was [I] drank a bottle of scotch and fell asleep on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution." The former couple eventually realised that the marriage was doing neither of them any good and that they didn’t want their relationship to "be the model that our kids see of marriage." He added, "We had a marriage that didn't work. This happens. She's somebody I love and respect, but to whom I shouldn't be married any longer. We did it amicably. We did our best. Did we have moments of tension? Did we have disagreements over custody? Was stuff difficult for us? Did we get angry? Yes, but fundamentally it was always underpinned with a respect." On his addiction, Ben said, "The cure for addiction is suffering, you suffer enough that something inside you goes, ‘I'm done’. I'm lucky because I hit that point before I lost the things that were most important. Not my career or money—it was my relationship with my kids." Ben Affleck's ex Jennifer Garner reacts to his and Jennifer Lopez's romance And he believes that if he was still with Jennifer, he would "probably still be drinking." The Hollywood actor went to rehab several times post the divorce and he doesn’t think he’s “cured” but he has "not wanted to drink once." Ben Affleck is now with Jennifer Lopez. They look happy together and are often seen doing family outings with his kids (he shares with Garner) and JLo’s kids (she shares with Mark).
Ridley Scott's latest film 'The Last Duel' is hauntingly real. And even though the film is set in the 14th century, the plot is relatable and once again throws light to the #MeToo movement and how a woman's truth is always secondary to a man's honour and pride.

Based on Eric Jagger's book by the same name, the film reunites Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as writers for the first time since their Oscar-winning film 'Good Will Hunting'. Along with writer Nicole Holofciner, Affleck and Damon narrate a story from three different perspectives.

Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) and Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) are to get into a duel after Carrogues' wife Marguerite de Carrouges (Jodie Comer) alleges that she has been raped by Le Gris.

The story begins with Carrouges' side of the story. Damon plays an obnoxious, foolish, illiterate man who knows only to fight. His marriage to Marguerite is also on the pretext to increase his hold over a particular area and produce an heir for his family.

Le Gris, his friend and now enemy, is strikingly different. Born poor, Le Gris is knowledgable, well-versed, good looking and charming. He has a way with the ladies and is also Pierre's (Ben Affleck) favourite who as the King's cousin runs a certain part of the kingdom. Le Gris, in his version of the story, denies the rape and claims that Marguerite is willing let him have her after the initial bit of reluctance- which according to him is normal as women play hard to get.

The third version- the most haunting and achingly truthful is that of Marguerite's story who has a bright, learned woman who is trapped due to the societal norms and suffers silently until she is raped and decides to speak up but at the cost of losing everything in her life. She has always been controlled by the men in her life- her father and husband- who treat her as a commodity and only as a means to produce an heir for the honourable family.

Carrouges, who has been nursing a grudge against Le Gris already, goes to the King to seek justice for the rape. The king decides to first hold a trial, which leads to uncomfortable questions in court particularly for Marguerite and then get the two men to fight each other. The one who wins will be the chosen one and his truth will be considered as the ultimate one.

Since the film presents three different perspectives of the same incidents, there is a certain amount of repetition. Set in a cold, grey France, the story is grim yet engaging with a tight screenplay. It also helps that the film has a stellar cast who enhance the viewing experience to a great level.

Damon plays the ignorant, brash Carrouges with ease. He is awkward, irrational and laughed upon by his peers. He tones down his appearance to look his part- that of a man who has no emotions and only understands the language of power and keeps complaining about how he has been wronged by people.

Actress Jodie Comer, who plays Marguerite de Carrouges, emotes through her eyes. With limited lines dedicated to her, Comer's character is a tough one to play. But deft writing and her credible performance elevates the character- who despite limited dialogues, speaks volumes of her woes and troubles. Comer's performance is restraint - just what is required for her part.

The show stealer is Adam Driver who plays the charming, manupulative and slightly guilty Le Gris with great conviction. You can't take your eyes of Driver, who in the recent past, has amanged to shine in almost all his films. You know he is wrong, but you find yourself drawn to his character the most.

The film narrates a story of rape and how fighting for women's honour was never a priority for men. The concept of concent was not prevalent either- issues that are still discussed widely in the era of the global #MeToo movement. The duel took place between the two men to protect their honour and dignity and not of the man. While the film is about the two men, the detailed screenplay and skilled camera by Dariusz Wolski often lingers towards the women- who silently portray the years of suffering or shock or empathy for their fellow sisters. And these moments are the highlight of 'The Last Duel' making Ridley Scott's period drama effective.

George Clooney is back behind the camera for 'The Tender Bar', a coming-of-age story starring Ben Affleck and Tye Sheridan.

The feature film, Clooney's eighth as director, is based on the memoirs of American author JR Moehringer, who found substitutes for his absent father at his uncle Charlie's New York pub.

"It was nice. It was gentle. It was kind, and I don`t often do films like that," Clooney told Reuters on Sunday, at the London Film Festival premiere of the drama.

"I wanted to have something that didn`t necessarily reflect all the things that we`ve been going through. I wanted to have something that reminded us that we all kind of like each other in general."

The film sees JR, played by Sheridan and newcomer Daniel Ranieri, being taken under the wing of his barman uncle played by Affleck, and finding shelter in his establishment. Influenced by the stories told by the bar`s colourful cast of patrons, JR matures from an insecure boy to an acclaimed writer.

Casting his friend Affleck as the larger-than-life Uncle Charlie was a no-brainer, said Clooney.

"This character is really smart and he`s a bit of a goofball and Ben is all of those things."

Clooney said turning 60 in May had made him re-evaluate his priorities.

"Sixty changes the dynamic a little bit. Amal and I talk about it all the time," he said, referring to his wife, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney.

"It doesn`t mean not working, because working is really important to both of us, but also making sure that we also spend time with each other and with our family."

Released in U.S. cinemas on Dec. 17, "The Tender Bar" starts streaming globally on Amazon Prime from Jan. 7, 2022.
George Clooney directorial 'The Tender Bar' co-starring Ben Affleck gets a release date

Seems like being `Instagram Official` has some other definition for star couple Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck as despite being rekindling the romance and uploading picture together, the two are not following each other on the popular app.

Bennifer 2.0 has managed to grab all the headlines with their public outings and PDA without even clicking follow on the other`s Instagram accounts, and interestingly nobody noticed until now.

It's back in July when Jennifer made her relationship Instagram official with Ben. On her birthday- July 24, she uploaded a picture that featured the duo packing on lips at a yacht.

Earlier that month, `The Boy Next Door` actor also liked a photo of Ben on a fan account, according to TMZ.
Other than these, the actors haven`t liked or tagged each other in any one of their posts on Instagram. Seems like, they certainly have other ways to show love for each other. Despite their busy schedules, the pair prioritizes time with their families.

This weekend, the couple brought their families together for an outdoor screening of School of Rock in Los Angeles, according to Page Six.

Bennifer also made their red carpet debut at the Venice Film Festival on September 10, years after getting back together. A few days later, they made heads turn with their Monday night`s Met Gala appearance in New York City.

A source told People magazine that amid their string of high-profile outings, the duo was enjoying their day-to-day lives and looking forward to their various work-related commitments this fall. The two were engaged in 2002 but split in 2004.

They co-starred in the films `Jersey Girl` and `Gigli` together. They postponed their 2003 wedding days before they were set to walk down the aisle, and then officially split by January 2004. The `I`m Real` songstress recently ended her engagement with former MLB star Alex Rodriguez.

Meanwhile, Ben split with actor Ana de Armas in January. Jennifer shares 13-year-old twins, Max and Emme, with ex-husband Marc Anthony, while Ben shares three children, 15-year-old Violet, 12-year-old Seraphina, and 9-year-old Samuel with ex-wife Jennifer Garner.

Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck not following each other on Instagram

There's no doubt that Jennifer Lopez is one of the icons of our generation. The singer has inspired many women of all ages across the world and her boyfriend, filmmaker-actor Ben Affleck states he is 'awe' of her.

In a new profile of Lopez for AdWeek, Affleck heaped praises on the award-winning performer.

"All I can tell you is that I have seen firsthand the difference representation makes because I have seen, over and over and over and over, women of colour approach Jennifer and tell her what her example as a strong woman and a woman succeeding and demanding her fair share in the business world means to them," Affleck said, something he saw first hand when he accompanied Lopez to the Bronx earlier this month where she lent her support to Latina-owned small businesses.

"I am in awe of what Jennifer`s effect on the world is," he continued. He added, "At most, as an artist, I can make movies that move people.
He was spotted on a round with his mother and son Samuel on Monday at the Century City, California Tiffany’s.

The last time they were serious together, Ben Affleck had proposed to Jennifer Lopez with a 6.1 carat pink diamond by Harry Winston that reportedly cost $2.5 million. This was back in November 2002. They had to postpone their planned 2003 wedding blaming “excessive media attention” in a statement.

The couple officially broke things off in 2004: “Jennifer Lopez has ended her engagement to Ben Affleck. At this difficult time, we ask that you respect her privacy,” a rep gave out as a statement.

Meanwhile, JLo and Ben have been getting cozy since few months now. They sparked things right after JLo broke things off with Alex Rodriguez.

Michael Keaton recently rejoined the superhero movie brigade and will reprise the role of the iconic DC superhero for the first time since 1992’s 'Batman Returns'. The actor is all set to feature in the Ezra Miller starrer movie 'The Flash' -- which has multiple versions of Batman.

In an interview with a global news website, Keaton talked about how he has always known that he could come back as the caped crusader and nail the character. "Frankly, in the back of my head, I always thought, 'I bet I could go back and nail that mother****r.' And so I thought, 'Well, now that they're asking me, let me see if I can pull that off'," he was reportedly quoted as saying.

In 1995, Keaton declined to return for 'Batman Forever' as he was not happy with the script. With 'The Flash', it was all about understanding the script well, which has been written by 'Birds of Prey' writer Christina Hodson.

"I had to read it more than three times to go, 'Wait, how does this work?' "They had to explain that to me several times. What’s really interesting is how much more I got (Batman) when I went back and did him. I get this on a whole other level now," he added.

"I never looked at it like, 'Oh, this is just a silly thing.' It was not a silly thing when I did Batman. But it has become a giant thing, culturally. It's iconic. This is a big deal in the world to people. You’ve got to honor that and be respectful of that. Even I go, 'Jesus, this is huge," Keaton said of his changed perception about superhero movies.

Interestingly, in another recent interview, Keaton said he felt shockingly normal about coming back as Batman. “It was shockingly normal. It was weird. Like I went ‘Oh, oh yeah, that’s right.’ But also then you start to play the scenes and a lot of memories, a lot of interesting sense memories (start to come back)," said the actor.

'The Flash' is set to hit theaters on November 4 next year.

It was not a silly thing when I did Batman.

Michael Keaton always knew he could come back as Batman and 'nail' it!

A crew member was injured after an accident on the set of the upcoming superhero film 'The Flash' in Scotland. The crew member was not seriously hurt but received immediate medical attention. In a statement to Variety, Warner Bros' spokesperson confirmed the news, “An accident occurred while filming ‘The Flash,’ where thankfully nobody was seriously hurt. The crew member involved received immediate medical attention as a matter of protocol.” “We take the well-being of all our employees seriously and have strict health and safety procedures in place on all productions.” As per the reports, the crew member was a camera operator who got hurt after he collided with Batman’s motorcycle, the Batcycle. Penn Badgley aka Dan Humphrey talks about his overwhelming ‘Gossip Girl’ fame "The camera man on a bike was chasing the Batman motorbike and went under it," an eyewitness told the local publication Glasgow Live. The movie has been in production in Glasgow with Ezra Miller set to return as Barry Allen aka the Flash. He first appeared in 2017's 'Justice League'.
The last time Hollywood heavyweights—Matt Damon and Ben Affleck—wrote a script together; they won the best original screenplay for it. The film was ‘Good Will Hunting’ and the year, 1998.

Twenty-five years later, the duo—also long-time friends—have come together for their upcoming project ‘The Last Duel’.

Talking about how the pair got together to write the script of this movie, Matt Damon told a talk-show host, “It’s the first movie we’ve written in 25 years or something, and we wrote with another great writer named Nicole Holofcener. We saw it as a story of perspective, and so Ben and I wrote the male perspectives and Nicole wrote the female perspective.”

“I think we just found that having made… like making movies for 30 years, we actually learned something about structure along the way and the process went along a lot faster,” he said. “And so I think we’ll write a lot more in the future just because it didn’t turn out to be as time-consuming as we thought,” said the actor about co-writing more with Affleck.

In comparison, writing ‘The Duel’ was easier then writing the script of ‘Good Will Hunting’. Damon explained, “I think that writing process for Good Will Hunting was so inefficient. You know, because we didn’t really understand structure so we wrote thousands of pages.”

“Back in the day, we didn’t have deadlines because nobody cared what we were doing, no one was waiting for the script, we were unemployed, so we literally had nothing else to do,” he joked.

Directed by Ridley Scott, ‘The Last Duel’ is slated to release on October 15 this year.
