More than 170 global leaders and Nobel laureates, including former US President Barack Obama and former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, have penned an open letter urging Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to suspend legal proceedings against Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.

Yunus, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his work, pioneering microcredit to aid impoverished individuals, has allegedly faced "continuous judicial harassment" at the hands of Hasina's administration.

What the leaders said

In the letter dated Tuesday (August 29th), the leaders said: "One of the threats to human rights that concerns us in the present context is the case of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus. We are alarmed that he has recently been targeted by what we believe to be continuous judicial harassment."

Obama & other global leaders rally for Muhammad Yunus, pen open letter to Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina

With former US president Donald Trump still having high approval ratings and current President Joe Biden not so much, there is an apparent stir within the Democratic Party ranks about prospects of its hold on the power post-US Presidential Election 2024. RadarOnline[dot]com has reported that secret back-channel talks have started within the Democratic Party to convince former first lady Michelle Obama to run for president.

The news report has said that numbers suggest Michelle Obama would have greater approval ratings (48 per cent) than Biden (36 per cent) if she declared right now that she would be running for president.

“If Michelle announced, the election would go immediately from a hotly contested footrace to a landslide,” a Democrat source reportedly said.

Trump is currently facing a slew of legal troubles. From hush money to a porn star to charges of attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 US elections, he has been forced to make appearances in a number of courts across the US, becoming the first sitting or former US president to suffer this fate. Many of the hearings in these cases are likely to take place just when the race to win the Republican Party nomination to contest the 2024 election heats up in the coming months.

'Desperate' Democrats are urging Michelle Obama to run for president: Report

A recently disclosed letter from 1982 has shed light on the intimate thoughts of former US President Barack Obama regarding his sexuality.

Penned during his time at Occidental College in Los Angeles, the letter addressed homosexuality and unveiled his innermost fantasies involving same-sex encounters.

While the letter exposes a facet of his personal reflections, it also emphasises his acceptance of his male identity and a broader contemplation of gender, reported the Hindustan Times.

The uncovered letter, penned when Obama was 21, delves into his vivid same-sex fantasies as a form of mental detachment from reality.

These musings served as an escape from mundane life's repetitive dramas, though he stressed that they remained purely products of his imagination.

Beyond his fantasies, Obama also expressed a desire for an androgynous perspective, advocating for a holistic perception of individuals instead of gender-based categorisation.

1982 letter reveals Barack Obama's candid reflections on gay fantasies to ex-girlfriend

Former US President Barack Obama has cautioned his Democrat ally and current President Joe Biden about Republican Party's Donald Trump's 'intensely loyal following'. Obama reportedly underlined that Trump could emerge as a more formidable candidate than currently believed.

According to a report in The Washington Post, at a private lunch held at Biden's presidential residence inside the White House, Obama promised to throw his weight behind Biden to get him re-elected.

Obama reportedly made it clear that Trump has an iron grip on the Republican Party, as reflected by a faltering campaign by Republican candidates such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

What does it mean?

Barack Obama is considered the top star of the Democratic Party.

Musings in the US conservative media suggest that there is a conscious attempt to cultivate the former first lady Michelle Obama as a potential presidential candidate in later years. Until then, the Obamas, reportedly, plan to stand firmly behind Joe Biden to keep Democrats in power till 2028.

But didn't Obama favour Hillary Clinton against Joe Biden previously?

Yes. Many Democrats find Obama responsible for pushing former US state secretary Hillary Clinton's name and not Joe Biden's in the 2016 US presidential polls.

In the recent past, a sense of lingering frustration has been reported among some in Biden’s circle about Obama’s role ahead of the 2016 election, especially in the face of a belligerent Donald Trump whose rise they say became possible because of Hillary Clinton's eventual inability to counter him in 2016.

Also read | Explained: Indictments, arraignments, disqualification risk. Can Trump still run for 2024 US presidency?
Barack Obama, the former president of the United States issued concerns about India as he said on Thursday (June 22) that New Delhi risks "pulling apart" if the Muslim minority is not respected. He also called for the matter to be raised with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently on a US visit.

Obama said that if he had the chance, he would speak to PM Modi about all the concerns over the protection of the rights of ethnic minorities in India. He admitted that he has worked with PM Modi on climate change and other areas, however, also said that the issues of democracy also need to be discussed.

On one side, the White House rolled out the red carpet for PM Modi and US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden welcomed him with pomp and show, on the other hand, Obama spoke about minority issues while speaking in a CNN interview.

The former president said that addressing human rights with allies was always "complicated" on a visit to Greece where he is holding a weeklong session for emerging global leaders. "If I had a conversation with Prime Minister Modi, who I know well, part of my argument would be that if you do not protect the rights of ethnic minorities in India, that there is a strong possibility at some point that India starts pulling apart," Obama said. "We've seen what happens when you start getting those kinds of large internal conflicts. So that would be contrary to the interests not just of Muslim India but also of Hindu India," he added. Obama says India risks 'pulling apart' without minority rights as PM Modi visits US

Former US president Barack Obama made quite a statement as he voiced his support for the Writers Guild of America and its members striking for their rights. Obama opened Netflix’s live stream event for his new docuseries titled Working: What We Do All Day, as he said, “Part of what this show Working is about is how certain things are constant about the work experience. People trying to find work that’s satisfying, people trying to pay the bills.”

Obama added, “Unfortunately one of the things that’s also been constant is the struggle for people to make sure their employers are treating them fairly and they’re getting a fair share of the pie. I think what we’ve seen throughout American history is that unions and worker organisations have had to make demands on their employers, those that are controlling whatever industry they’re in, to make sure they’re treated fairly and entertainment is no exception. My hope would be that in a time of big technological change, where you’ve got big mega corporations that are doing really well, they keep in mind the creative people who are actually making the product that consumers appreciate and that gets exported all around the world.”

Now in its fourth week, the Writers Guild of America’s strike has led to a lot of films and shows halting production.

Obama, in support of the strike, added, “I know there are many studios and streamers who feel a little bit embattled and there’s been a little bit too much of a glut of product and they’re looking at their bottom line and they’re experiencing shareholder pressure, etc. But the fact is, is that they wouldn’t be around if it weren’t for writers creating the stories that matter. My hope is that as somebody who’s really supportive of the Writer’s Guild and as someone who just believes in storytelling and the craft of it, I’m hoping that they will be compensated and the importance of what they do will be reflected in whatever settlement’s arrived at. I’m very supportive of the writers and the strike and I’m hopeful that they get a fair share of the fruits of their labor.”

Obama champions the cause of Writers Guild of America's members

This is not the first time when Obama made clear which faction he resonates with. In a lengthy Instagram post, Obama promoted the launch of Working and wrote, “This series is also about making sure we respect everyone’s line of work — because we all deserve to be valued and treated with respect. That includes the friends I made in this series and everyone else who is fighting for fair compensation and new protections that reflect changing workplaces — including the members of the WGA who are on strike right now.”

Barack Obama shows support for writers' strike as he opens Netflix’s live stream event for his new docuseries

Alireza Akbari, the British-Iranian dual national and former Iranian deputy defence minister was executed earlier this year by Tehran over accusations of espionage. Now, a detailed report by the New York Times confirms that Akbari was indeed a British spy and had been leaking Iranian nuclear secrets since 2004, managing to hide his activities for a 15-year long period.

Citing three Western intelligence and national security officials, the report claims that it was in 2008 that a senior British intelligence officer went to Tel Aviv and informed Israeli officials about the mole they had planted with access to Iran's nuclear secrets. The officer forwarded Akbari's investigation which stated that Iran had been enriching uranium at a secret underground site at Fordow, 20 miles northeast of Qom.

At the G20 summit in Pittsburgh the following year, the then US President Barack Obama made the revelations public, sending shockwaves across the world. The report by Akbari was the reason Tehran was made a pariah state with hefty economic sanctions imposed on it - the effects of which are still being felt by the West Asian country.

According to reports, Akbari's inputs also played a prominent role in the assassination of Iran’s top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh who was killed in 2020 by Israeli special forces.

The report claimed that Iran finally managed to get hold of Akbari after receiving assistance from Russian intelligence officials. However, the publication did not make it clear how Moscow managed to make the discovery.

"He [Akbari] appeared to get away with it until 2019, when Iran discovered with the assistance of Russian intelligence officials that he had revealed the existence of a clandestine Iranian nuclear weapons program deep in the mountains near Tehran, according to two Iranian sources with links to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards," read the report.

Israel received intel about Iran's nuclear weapons through British spy Alireza Akbari: Report

For much of the 20th century, often dubbed 'The American Century,' it was an article of faith for most Americans that their country is the world’s greatest. Slowly but steadily, this has changed. It is now a minority view.

The latest in a string of polls over the past few years shows that just one in five Americans think their country stands above all others in the world. The share of those who think other countries are better than the US rose from 19 per cent in 2016 to 27 per cent now.

The cultural change reflected by these figures comes from a survey conducted by the Wall Street Journal and the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. NORC is one of the largest independent social research organisations in the US.

It found not only that the notion of American Exceptionalism is fading from the national consciousness but also a decline in a range of other values. A somewhat wistful headline over the Wall Street Journal report on the survey said: “America Pulls Back from Values That Once Defined It.”

They include, according to the survey, patriotism, religion and tolerance. Thirty-eight per cent of those polled said patriotism was very important to them, down from 70 per cent when the question was first asked in 1998. On religion, the trend was down sharply, too, from 62 to 39.

Tolerance for others, deemed very important by Americans in previous surveys, dropped from 80 per cent to 58 per cent – not surprising in a country as deeply polarised as the United States.

Bill McInturff, a pollster who worked on previous surveys, described the differences as dramatic. “It paints a new and surprising portrait of a changing America,” he told the Journal. “Perhaps the toll of our political division, Covid, and the lowest economic confidence in decades is having a startling effect on our core values.”

Only one of the core values the survey covered showed an upward swing: money. It was deemed very important by 31 per cent in 1998 and 43 per cent now. In this, and similar surveys over the past few years, young Americans (aged between 18 and 29) scored lowest on the importance they gave to the concepts that combine to the idea of exceptionalism.

They also make up the largest group of those who say that the United States is one of the world’s greatest countries, along with others.

That sober view brings to mind a response then-President Barack Obama gave at a news conference in Brussels in 2009 when asked whether he believed in American exceptionalism. “I believe in American exceptionalism, just as the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks in Greek exceptionalism.”

The remark prompted rebukes from American conservatism, who interpreted it as undermining the standing of the United States in the world.

Oddly, the idea that the United States is exceptional is rooted in the writings of a Frenchman, political scientist Alexis de Tocqueville, after travelling in America in 1831. Through much of its history, US leaders described their country in terms that echoed his notion of a special nation.

Thomas Jefferson, one of the country’s Founding Fathers, frequently referred to it as “the Empire of Liberty.” President Ronald Reagan, borrowing from a 1630 sermon, rarely missed an opportunity to talk about his country as a “shining city on a hill.” Abraham Lincoln spoke of America as “the last best hope on earth.” More recently, the late Secretary of State Madeleine Albright referred to “the indispensable nation.”

While that may have raised eyebrows, then and now, by foreigners who saw the United States in less glowing colours, there is no dispute that it played a role so dominant after the end of the Second World War that the 20th century merited being called the American Century.

In a book of that title, the late British editor and writer Harold Evans noted that “the 20th century belongs to the United States because the triumph of its faith in its founding idea of political and economic freedom.”

With China now trying to equal or surpass the United States economically and perhaps eventually militarily, the 21st century is yet to earn a superpower-specific designation.

Meanwhile, there is a flip side to the “exceptionalism” label. Call it 'Only in America.'

Only in America are there more guns than people. Only in America are there more mass shootings than days in the month. Only in America is it easier for an 18-year-old citizen in most states to buy an assault rifle than a six-pack of beer. Only in America, driven by a toxic blend of guns and fear, can you get shot for knocking on the wrong door.

Only in America can a president who lost an election convince at least a third of the population that the vote was stolen, despite abundant evidence to the contrary. And only in America do you have legislators on the far right who describe people jailed for storming the Capitol to prevent the peaceful transfer of power, as political prisoners.
