Bangladesh polls 2026: Yunus' attempt to placate tensions

Bangladesh Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on Monday (Aug 25) said that his country does not have more resources to allocate for its 1.3 million Rohingya refugees. The Bangladeshi de facto prime minister said that hosting over one million Rohingya refugees has put a huge strain on Bangladesh, in a multitude of areas, from its economy to its environment. Speaking at the start of a three-day 'Stakeholder's Dialogue' in Cox's Bazar, Yunus then urged the international community to join in on efforts to chart a practical roadmap for the speedy and dignified return of the Rohingyas to their homes in Rakhine as soon as possible. He also presented a seven-point roadmap for the repatriation efforts.
What did Yunus say about the Rohingyas in Bangladesh?
The Nobel laureate, in his speech at Cox Bazar, said that hosting the 1.3 million refugees has put a huge strain on Bangladesh, in areas from the economy and environment to governance. "We don't foresee any scope whatsoever for further mobilisation of resources from domestic sources, given our numerous challenges," he said, urging the international community to come up with a practical roadmap for the refugees' return home. "The Rohingya issue and its sustainable resolution must be kept alive on the global agenda, as they need our support until they return home," he said at the event marking the eighth anniversary of over 700,000 Rohingya fleeing Myanmar in just a matter of days. This led to the creation of the world's largest refugee settlement around the coastal town of Cox Bazar.
Yunus' 7-point roadmap for Rohingya Crisis
According to Amader Barta, Yunus put forward a seven-step proposal, calling for the international community to help shoulder the burden of the Rohingya crisis.

Right to Return – Speedy, safe, voluntary and sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas to Rakhine without delay.

Sustained Aid – Donors must plug funding gaps in the 2025–26 Joint Response Plan and guarantee long-term support.

End Violence – Myanmar authorities and the Arakan Army must stop attacks, ensure Rohingya security, prevent new outflows, and allow IDPs to return home.

Dialogue – Create an inclusive platform for dialogue to ease tensions, restore rights and push reconciliation.

Global & Regional Role – ASEAN, neighbours and the wider international community must work for peace, stability and curb cross-border crimes.

Oppose Ethnic Cleansing – Stakeholders must take a firm stand against ethnic cleansing and calibrate relations with Myanmar and armed groups.

Accountability – Strengthen ICJ and ICC processes, enforce ICJ rulings, and secure justice for genocide and crimes against humanity.

MEA responds to Yunus govt's accusations | 'Hasina's party is banned in Bangladesh'

Mohammad Yunus-led interim government in Bangladesh has reportedly ordered all Bangladeshi foreign missions to remove the portrait of President Shahabuddin from their offices. Reports have linked this move by the Yunus-led government to his gradual wiping of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's legacy from the South Asian nation. However, there was no written order of the same and local reports said that the order was issued verbally. Earlier this month, Yunus had announced that elections in the country would be held in February 2026.
Here's what we know about the portrait controversy
A report by The Bangladeshi Daily Prothom Alo reported that officials have been instructed to take down the portraits. The Daily Star cited sources in the foreign ministry who revealed that most of the 82 missions had already taken down the portraits following the July uprising, while the remaining missions were reportedly instructed last Friday to do the same. Since the order was made verbally, the lack of documentation and transparency has raised eyebrows. Moreover, removal of Shahabuddin's portraits has been linked to wiping Sheikh Hasina's legacy as he was appointed during Hasina’s tenure. As the controversy spiralled, both Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam and Shah Asif Rahman, Director General of the Public Diplomacy Wing, declined to comment. Azad Majumder, Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, said in a Facebook post that the interim government had discouraged the use of official portraits from the outset, maintaining what he described as an unwritten “zero-portrait” policy and blamed media for stirring controversy. “Even so, some individuals have, on their own initiative, displayed pictures of the government or head of state. However, no written directive has been issued to any office or mission instructing them to remove such portraits. Since the announcement of the election schedule has reduced opportunities to create confusion over politics, many small matters are being exaggerated and turned into mountain-sized controversies to keep up political momentum,” Azad wrote. Responding on the controversy, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said that she learnt of the removals from media reports and stated that it would not impact the upcoming polls. “If photos were removed, that has nothing to do with the election. The Awami League has been banned from political activity, including contests in upcoming elections—an effective move to sideline both the party and Hasina-affiliated politics. Once a highly secured Prime Minister's residence, Ganabhaban, the former official residence of former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina is being converted into a museum. It is likely to be named as the July Revolution Memorial Museum. The VIP complex with the facilities needed for a leader to carry out official work was constructed by Sheikh Hasina's father, the first leader of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and Sheikha Hasina turned it into her official residence during her 15-year rule. The palace was named the Estate Rajbari during the British and Pakistani regime and was the palace of the Maharajas of Dighapatia. Almost everything was plundered from the house including sarees, ornaments, clocks, sofas, designer handbags, televisions, fish among other things. The viral images filled social media triggering viral memes. Subsequently, authorities claimed that most of the items looted were recovered. The riotous and violent crowd had raided the complex in rage against Hasina for allegedly sanctioning murders and leading a fascist administration. The museum will feature the artefacts of last year's violence protesters who were killed and graffiti on the wall by protesters will also be left intact. Bangladesh's Ministry of Cultural Affairs has suggested the establishment of almost 200 jobs for the running and management of the museum. In a written statement in the Indian Parliament, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday (August 1) said that India is closely monitoring developments that have national security implications, including those about the anti-India map by a Turkish NGO. On behalf of the government, Jaishankar said that his ministry has taken note of an Islamic group in Dhaka named ‘Saltanat-e-Bangla’, which is backed by a Turkish NGO called the 'Turkish Youth Federation', that has put out a map of the so-called ‘Greater Bangladesh’ that includes parts of India. Jaishankar was responding to a starred question by Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala in the Rajya Sabha, saying the map in question was displayed at Dhaka University on the occasion of Poila Boisakh on April 14 this year. According to a report published by the Economic Times, a group ‘Saltanat-e-Bangla’ allegedly put out the controversial map of "Greater Bangladesh". The map marked Myanmar's Arakan State, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and the entire Northeast region of India as part of ‘Greater Bangladesh’. According to ET, Turkey is increasing its influence in Bangladesh after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina. As per the report, Turkish NGOs aligned with the country's ruling government have also grown increasingly active in Bangladesh. Notably, Turkey supported Pakistan after India launched Operation Sindoor to hit terror infrastructure inside the neighbouring country, prompting calls for its boycott in India.

Bangladesh government on Thursday denied any links between the Mymensingh property and the legendary Bengali Filmmaker and Author Satyajit Ray. The clarification follows a statement issued by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, which claimed that the house was the property of the eminent litterateur Upendra Kishor Ray Chowdhury and was a landmark and a symbol of Bengal's cultural renaissance. "Given the building’s landmark status, symbolising the Bangla cultural renaissance, it would be preferable to reconsider the demolition and examine options for its repair and reconstruction as a museum of literature and a symbol of the shared culture of India and Bangladesh", stated MEA.
Whose house is it and why is it being demolished?
According to the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the land archive reflects that ‘the house in question is not ancestral property of Satyajit Ray’, it is the property of local zamindar Shashikant Acharya Chowdhury, and it was built for his employees. The Muhammad Yunus-led interim government stated that since the abolition of the zamindari system, it had been a state property."And, the land itself was a non-agricultural government (khas) land and leased to Shishu Academy on a long-term basis," said the statement by the Bangladesh government.Since 2014, the academy has shifted to a rented property elsewhere in Mymensingh city. Bangladesh will hold high-stakes negotiations with the United States this week to press for deeper tariff reductions, after President Donald Trump’s administration announced a 35 per cent tariff on Bangladeshi goods. The South Asian nation’s trade delegation is seeking to protect its crucial garment export sector from a damaging competitive blow. According to Bloomberg, Commerce Adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, Sk. Bashir Uddin is leading the delegation in Washington for talks scheduled from 9 to 10 July. In an interview with Bloomberg from the US capital, Uddin said Dhaka is committed to finding “common ground” with Washington and is carefully reviewing the draft proposals shared by the US Trade Representative’s office.
Trade tensions threaten key export sector
Bloomberg reports that the new 35 per cent tariff, although slightly below the 37 per cent initially proposed, still risks undermining Bangladesh’s already fragile economy. The country’s ready-made garment industry, its largest export sector which employs millions and is a critical driver of foreign exchange earnings. By sharply raising costs for Bangladeshi apparel in the US market, the Trump administration’s move threatens to erode the country’s price competitiveness. This comes at a time when global demand is under pressure, and Bangladesh’s factories are already grappling with energy shortages and rising input costs. Commerce Adviser Uddin told Bloomberg the goal in Washington is to find a “mutually win-win proposition” despite the uncertainty of the negotiations. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the evolving trade environment, describing it as “an uncertain world” for exporters and policymakers alike.
Vietnam’s better deal raises competitive stakes
Bangladesh’s urgency is sharpened by the outcome of US trade talks with Vietnam. As per Bloomberg, Hanoi managed to secure a more favourable 20 per cent tariff on its exports to the US, leaving Bangladesh at a clear disadvantage in the lucrative American apparel market. Vietnam’s competitive edge could see global brands shift more sourcing there, dealing a further blow to Bangladesh’s garment industry. With both countries competing for the same buyers, the difference in tariff rates has become a critical concern for Dhaka.
Diplomacy seen as path to compromise
Analysts at Dhaka-based BRAC EPL Research told Bloomberg that the upcoming negotiations offer a potential pathway to ease trade tensions. They argue that proactive diplomacy could still deliver positive outcomes if Bangladesh can convince the US to lower tariff barriers. However, the window for compromise may be narrow. The Trump administration has sent formal notification letters to multiple countries detailing its new tariff schedules as part of a broader effort to rebalance trade relationships and prioritise American manufacturing. For Bangladesh, the stakes could hardly be higher. Sheikh Hasina’s 16-year rule in Bangladesh ended on August 5 last year after a violent uprising. Hasina resigned and fled to India after the protesters almost converged on her official residence in Dhaka.

The quantum of punishment for Hasina was decided by a three-member bench of the ICT-1, headed by Chairman Justice Md Golam Martuza Mozumdar, according to report.

India has tightened restrictions on imports of Bangladeshi jute products and woven fabrics through all land borders, in a move that underscores deepening diplomatic tensions between the neighbours. According to a notification issued by India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) on Friday, these products will now be permitted entry only via the Nhava Sheva seaport in Maharashtra. “Import from Bangladesh shall not be allowed from any land port on the India-Bangladesh border. However, it is allowed only through the Nhava Sheva Seaport,” the DGFT order said. The restriction, which took effect immediately, applies to a wide range of jute products including flax tow and waste, bast fibres, single flax and jute yarn, multiple folded woven fabrics, and unbleached jute fabrics. Notably, the DGFT clarified that the ban does not affect Bangladesh’s exports to Nepal or Bhutan transiting through India. However, re-export of these goods from Nepal or Bhutan into India is explicitly barred. This is the latest in a series of trade barriers India has imposed on Bangladesh in recent months, signalling a chilling of what has often been described as a model bilateral relationship in South Asia.
Earlier curbs deepen friction
Friday’s decision follows two recent moves targeting Bangladeshi trade. On April 9, India withdrew a transhipment facility it had granted to Bangladesh for shipping goods to the Middle East, Europe, and other destinations, except for Nepal and Bhutan, as reported by The Hindu BusinessLine. Again, on May 17, India reportedly imposed port restrictions on the import of Bangladeshi goods such as readymade garments and processed food items. These measures are widely seen as retaliation against controversial remarks made by Muhammad Yunus, head of Bangladesh’s interim government, during a recent speech in China. Yunus reportedly described India’s northeastern states as a “landlocked region with no access to the ocean,” a comment viewed in New Delhi as an attempt to undermine the region’s connectivity initiatives, including access to Bangladesh’s Chittagong Port.
India–Bangladesh trade dependency
Despite the tensions, trade between India and Bangladesh has been expanding. According to India’s Ministry of Commerce data, bilateral trade stood at approximately $14 billion in 2022–23. India exported goods worth over $11.2 billion to Bangladesh while importing around $2.8 billion, making Bangladesh India’s largest trade partner in South Asia but with a significant trade imbalance. Major Indian exports to Bangladesh reportedly include cotton, vehicles, fuel, cereals, and machinery. Bangladesh’s top exports to India include ready-made garments, jute products, and processed foods. As per Bangladesh Bank figures cited by The Daily Star, Bangladesh relies heavily on India for essential commodities, especially during periods of global supply shocks.
Jute trade and employment stakes
Jute is a critical sector for Bangladesh, employing millions of farmers and factory workers. According to Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) estimates, over 3 million people in Bangladesh depend directly or indirectly on the jute industry. India has historically been the largest market for Bangladeshi jute goods, though it has frequently resorted to anti-dumping duties and quotas to protect domestic producers. Friday’s restrictions on land routes will raise costs for Bangladeshi exporters, who now face the longer and more expensive seaborne route to Nhava Sheva port, potentially squeezing profit margins and affecting employment.
The Ganga Waters Treaty in focus
Adding another layer of tension is India is reportedly considering reviewing the 1996 Ganga Waters Treaty as its expiry approaches in 2026.The treaty, signed by then-Prime Ministers H.D. Deve Gowda and Sheikh Hasina, allocates the dry-season flow of the Ganga at Farakka Barrage between the two countries. It guarantees Bangladesh a share of 35,000 cubic feet per second (cusecs) on average during the critical lean season (January to May), though the actual allocation depends on flow levels. According to the treaty text (Government of India, Ministry of Jal Shakti), water sharing is divided in 10-day periods, with provisions for arbitration and joint monitoring. For Bangladesh, the Ganga’s lean-season flow is vital for irrigation, drinking water, and navigation in the southwest, where salinity intrusion from the Bay of Bengal is a severe threat. As quoted by Reuters, Bangladesh has repeatedly expressed concerns that upstream diversions in India have reduced the promised flows, hurting agriculture and drinking water supplies. India, on the other hand, argues that rising demand in West Bengal and Bihar, as well as variable rainfall, complicate full compliance in dry years. Negotiations on renewing the treaty were already expected to be delicate. Recent diplomatic spats risk making them even harder.
Strategic stakes and geopolitical undercurrents
India and Bangladesh have often hailed their ties as a model for South Asia. The two countries share a 4,096-kilometre border, the longest for either nation and have deep security, trade, and cultural links. In recent years, India has invested heavily in cross-border rail and road connectivity, inland waterway transit, and energy trade. Bangladesh, meanwhile, is also reportedly deepening ties with China, which has become its largest source of foreign credit for infrastructure projects. Beijing’s support for projects like the Padma Bridge Rail Link and various ports has heightened India’s strategic anxieties. As per Reuters, India sees Bangladesh as vital to its “Neighbourhood First” and “Act East” strategies, serving as a bridge to Southeast Asia and as a counterweight to China’s regional ambitions. But with growing distrust over trade barriers, provocative diplomatic language, and the looming challenge of renegotiating the Ganga Waters Treaty, relations are entering a tense and unpredictable phase. (With inputs from the agencies)

Bangladesh is set to receive $1.3 billion in IMF funds on June 26, as part of the country’s ongoing $4.7 billion loan programme, following a months-long delay. The disbursement, approved by the IMF Executive Board on Monday night, includes the fourth and fifth tranches, according to Bangladesh’s Finance Ministry and Bangladesh Bank, as quoted by Prothom Alo. The fresh funds will raise total disbursements under the programme to $3.61 billion, leaving $1.09 billion to be delivered later in two tranches. The final approval came after Bangladesh agreed to key IMF conditions, including implementing a market-based exchange rate, as per Reuters.
Why was the disbursement delayed?
The fourth tranche was initially scheduled for December 2024. However, as per Bangladesh Bank officials, a snowstorm in Washington disrupted IMF board operations, forcing repeated postponements. Subsequent board meetings in February and March did not include Bangladesh’s loan review, and an IMF team visiting Dhaka in April offered no commitment on the next tranche. Tensions reportedly emerged over the IMF’s demand for foreign exchange reform, which Dhaka resisted for several months. Finally, following virtual negotiations in May led by Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H. Mansur, an agreement was reached. On May 14, the IMF confirmed that disbursement would proceed in June, as per an official IMF statement quoted by Reuters.
What is the IMF loan programme?
The IMF approved the $4.7 billion package on January 31, 2023, to help Bangladesh manage its macroeconomic pressures, stabilise foreign reserves, and push forward reforms. At the time, the IMF stated the programme would also support climate resilience and inclusive growth. The loan structure includes:      •     $3.3 billion under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) and Extended Fund Facility (EFF)      •     $1.4 billion under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) — a climate-linked fund, from which Bangladesh became the first Asian country to receive financing, as per IMF documentation. So far, Bangladesh has received:      •     $476.3 million in February 2023      •     $681 million in December 2023      •     $1.15 billion in June 2024 The upcoming instalment, $884 million under ECF/EFF and $453 million under RSF, totals $1.33 billion, as per Reuters reporting based on the IMF Board decision.
What’s next?
According to Reuters, IMF officials praised Bangladesh for “broadly satisfactory performance” despite political and economic challenges but called for further action on structural reforms. Former World Bank economist Zahid Hossain told Prothom Alo that the disbursement will help stabilise foreign exchange reserves. However, he stressed the need to focus on “fuel subsidy reform, revenue mobilisation, and banking sector cleanup” to meet upcoming IMF targets. The final $1.09 billion will be disbursed in two phases, contingent on continued compliance with IMF conditionalities, particularly in the areas of fiscal discipline and exchange rate flexibility. (With inputs from the agencies)

This funding increases total disbursements to $3.61 billion, leaving $1.09 billion for later. The loan aims to stabilise the economy, support climate resilience, and advance reforms. Future disbursements depend on continued compliance with IMF conditions.

Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh has been vandalised by a group of individuals. The property in Sirajganj district is currently being run as a museum showing Tagore's life, and the incident took place on June 8 after an altercation over parking fee at the premises. According to the reports by local media, the matter will be probed by a three-member investigation team.
What triggered the incident?
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha news agency, the incident occurred following an altercation between an expatriate Bangladeshi national Shah Newaz and a staff of the Rabindra Kacharibari on June 8, the former was confined to an office room by the museum staff. News of the incident spread, sparking outrage among locals. On June 10, protestors gathered near the museum, and staged a human chain and demonstration. Bangladesh's interim government under Muhammad Yunus unveiled the country's new banknotes on Monday. Speaking to news agency AFP, Arif Hossain Khan, spokesperson of Bangladesh Bank - the country's central bank - said, "Under the new series and design, the notes will not feature any human portraits, but will instead showcase natural landscapes and traditional landmarks." However, Bangladesh Bank said that along with the new notes of three denominations - Taka 1000, Taka 50, and Taka 20 - existing banknotes and coins featuring Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will also remain in circulation.
Sheikh Hasina charged with crimes against humanity
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal accepted on Sunday (June 1) that ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina could be charged with crimes against humanity. The court directed investigators to produce Hasina, as well as a former home minister and a former police chief, before the court on June 16. Hasina has been in exile possibly in India since August 2024, when her 15-year reign came to an end after massive protests in the country. Bangladesh has also sent a formal request to India to extradite Hasina.

Bangladesh has begun issuing redesigned banknotes from Sunday, 1 June, that no longer feature the portrait of the country’s founding father and former prime minister, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. For decades, Rahman’s image appeared on every denomination of the Bangladeshi currency. He is also the father of Sheikh Hasina, the ousted prime minister whose removal has sparked political unrest across the country.
A shift after political change
Following the exit of Sheikh Hasina from power, Bangladesh Bank confirmed last year that it planned to update its banknotes. Now, that plan has come into effect.Speaking to AFP, Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan said the new currency design will shift focus entirely away from individuals."Under the new series and design, the notes will not feature any human portraits, but will instead showcase natural landscapes and traditional landmarks," Khan explained.
Notes to highlight heritage and nature
According to AFP, the new designs will include illustrations of Hindu and Buddhist temples, the work of late artist Zainul Abedin, and the National Martyrs’ Memorial, which honours those who lost their lives during the 1971 Liberation War.The redesigned notes aim to highlight Bangladesh’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, rather than any political figures.
Not the first redesign in Bangladesh’s history
This isn’t the first time Bangladesh has made major changes to its currency. In 1972, after its liberation from Pakistan, the country released notes featuring a map of the newly formed nation.Subsequent series included Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's portrait as the leader of the Awami League. However, during times when the Bangladesh Nationalist Party held power, currency designs focused more on historical and archaeological sites.
New notes rolled out in stages
Bangladesh Bank has so far released notes in three different denominations. "The new notes will be issued from the central bank's headquarters, and later from its other offices across the country," Khan added. "The other denominations of the notes with new designs will be released in phases."

The prosecutors of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Bangladesh formally charged former prime minister Sheikh Hasina with crimes against humanity along with former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun for the violent crackdown on the July 2024 uprising led by students. Hasina has rejected the charges as politically motivated. A ceremony, which was earlier scheduled to be held on May 15 for the newly-appointed envoys, had to be deferred. The deferment of the ceremony had come against the backdrop of strong criticism of Turkiye in India for its backing of Pakistan during the recent conflict between Indian and Pakistani militaries following Operation Sindoor.Indian defence forces on May 7 launched the operation to destroy terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Both India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to halt all military actions. There has also been a sharp downturn in India-Bangladesh relations after deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled Dhaka and took shelter in India in August last year in the face of a massive anti-government protest. The relations nosedived dramatically after the interim government in Bangladesh headed by Muhammad Yunus failed to contain attacks on minorities, especially Hindus, in that country.
