When the year 2021 had started, who would have thought that legendary footballer Lionel Messi will bid farewell to La Liga giants Barcelona and find a new home in France? Well, it actually happened and 2021 ended as a turbulent year in Messi's illustrious career so far. From international success to a dramatic farewell, to a new journey and finally the Ballon d'Or prize, the player has seen it all in 2021. The year had started with media rumours that Messi will leave Barcelona, however, later reports had suggested that he is all set to sign a new contract with his boyhood club. In a turn of events, the Spanish club announced in the first week of August that Messi will leave Barcelona due to "financial and structural obstacles" to the renewal of the deal. Bidding an emotional farewell to his Barca teammates at Camp Nou, teary-eyed Messi left Spain and some days later agreed to join French football club Paris Saint Germain (PSG), where he reunited with his former Barca teammate, Neymar. Mind-boggling salary of PSG star and his net worth Here's how Argentina's all-time great Lionel Messi became the top newsmaker in the football world: International success Messi often faced criticism for not winning a trophy with his international team, however, the jinx was broken in 2021 as he finally won a major international title, captaining Argentina to victory in the Copa America with a 1-0 win against Brazil in the final. Throughout the tournament, he scored four goals as Argentina won the South American championship for the first time since 1993. After winning the Ballon d'Or, he commented on the same as he said, "I think I won this trophy thanks to what we did at the Copa America so I dedicate this to my teammates." (Image: Lionel Messi is thrown into the air by teammates after winning the Conmebol 2021 Copa America football tournament final match against Brazil, on July 10, 2021. Credit: AFP) Bye-bye, Barcelona Messi broke down while saying goodbye to his teammates and the club where he spent over 20 years, achieving major records in Barcelona history. Messi came to Barcelona as a boy from Rosario and left as one of the most celebrated players in club history, He scored 672 goals in 778 appearances for the Spanish club. He has the most appearances for the team and scored the most goals, He also has the most wins. He won the most titles in the club's 121-year history. During his farewell address, he said, "Since I was 13 I am here. I am really grateful for everything. My teammates, the former players, this club, So many beautiful things have happened in this club and have made me the person I am today." (Image: Lionel Messi cries during a press conference at the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona on August 8, 2021. Credit: AFP) Bonjour Paris In August itself, Messi officially joined Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain as he signed a two-year contract with an option of an additional year. Messi's arrival at PSG appeared to be an opportunity for the owners and fans as they chase the Champions League, the trophy they want more than anything else. "I am excited to begin a new chapter of my career at Paris Saint-Germain. Everything about the club matches my football ambitions," he had said. (Image: Lionel Messi celebrates after scoring his second goal during the French L1 football match between Paris-Saint Germain (PSG) and FC Nantes. Credit: AFP) Ballon d'Or win Messi ended the year 2021 by winning the men's Ballon d'Or award for a record-extending seventh time. Previously, he won the last edition of the Ballon d'Or in 2019 and so far in his career, he has won in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015. His Ballon d'Or win has been criticised as some might question whether Messi really deserved it ahead of players like Robert Lewandowski, Jorginho or Cristiano Ronaldo. But Messi sheer brilliance, hard work and extraordinary exhibits on the field perfectly answer the criticism, as it has been for a long time. In a recent interview, Messi told that he doesn't care much about individual glory. "For me, the mere fact that I can be considered or cited as one of the best players in the world is more than enough," Messi told French newspaper L'Equipe. (Image: This combination of file photographs created on November 29, 2021, shows Barcelona's Argentinian forward Lionel Messi reacting as he receives the Ballon d'Or football award. Credit: AFP.) Job not done The year is ending, that too on a good note for Messi, but as we look forward, the job is not done yet as he, himself mentioned that his "dream is to win another Champions League". He had said it at his unveiling in August, with the last of his four European Cups coming in 2015. And then there's the World Cup in Qatar in 2022. The Argentinian will be looking forward to completing the unfinished business, winning the coveted trophy for his country. It might be his last chance. 2021 ended with bittersweet memories for Lionel Messi but 2022 is expected to be even more adventurous.

From Lionel Messi to Alexia Putellas: Complete list of winners from Ballon d'Or 2021 awards ceremony

Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has slammed France Football editor-in-chief Pascal Ferre for claiming that the Portuguese legend told him he wants to retire with more Ballon d'Or awards than his arch-rival Lionel Messi. France Football gives out the Ballon d'Or award every year to honour the best player of the year. The award is considered the most prestigious individual honour in world football.

In a lengthy post on Instagram, Ronaldo blasted Ferre and branded him a 'liar' while also accusing him of using his name to promote himself and his publication. Ronaldo's statement came after Messi was awarded the Ballon d'Or 2021 in Paris on Tuesday. The Argentine icon claimed the honour for a record-extending seventh time.

“Ronaldo has only one ambition, and that is to retire with more Ballons d’Or than Messi…. and I know that because he has told me,” Ferre had been quoted as saying earlier.

Responding to his claims, Ronaldo lashed out at Ferre and said it was unacceptable that a person responsible for giving out a major honour like the Ballon d'Or is making such baseless allegations again. He also slammed the Ballon d'Or chief for justifying his absence at the Ballon d'Or award ceremony on Tuesday with a lie.

“Today’s outcome explains why Pascal Ferré’s statements last week. when he stated that I confided in him that my only ambition was to finish my career with more Golden Balls than Lionel Messi. Pascal Ferré lied, he used my name to promote himself and to promote the publication he works for," Ronaldo wrote in a post on Instagram.

“It is unacceptable that the person responsible for awarding such a prestigious prize could lie in this way, in absolute disrespect for someone who has always respected France Football and the Ballon d’Or. And he lied again today, justifying my absence from the Gala with an alleged quarantine that has no reason to exist. I always want to congratulate those who win, within the sportsmanship and fair-play that have guided my career since the beginning, and I do it because I’m never against anyone.

“I always win for myself and for the clubs I represent, I win for myself and for those who love me. I don’t win against anyone. The biggest ambition of my career is to win national and international titles for the clubs I represent and for the national team in my country," he added.

"I would like to mention Robert Lewandowski, it's been a real honour to compete with you. Everyone knows and we agree that you were the winner last year," Goal.com quoted Messi as saying.

"I think France Football should award you your 2020 Ballon d'Or - you deserve it and you should have it at home," he added. Lewandowski was viewed as the favourite to win the Ballon d'Or in 2020 because of his goal-scoring exploits. But the award was cancelled that year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

"I think Robert Lewandowski had a great year. Year after year, he improves and shows the excellent striker he is, as well as his ability to score goals," said Messi.

"This year he was awarded as the top scorer. Of course, he can certainly aspire to that level next year, thanks to his way of being on the pitch. And in addition, he plays for a big club," he added.

Robert Lewandowski deserves Ballon d'Or, you were the winner last year, says Lionel Messi

Ballon d'Or is the most prestigious individual honour in world football and is awarded to the best player of the season every year. This year's Ballon d'Or ceremony will take place in Paris with the best men's player and best women's player set to be honoured after voting from journalists and footballers around the world. The Ballon d'Or awards are conducted by France Football.

The award ceremony had to be cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic with many believing Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski was robbed of a chance to win his maiden Ballon d'Or honour. Nonetheless, the Polis striker is once again in the fray this year and is among the favourites to win the prestigious award.

Argentine legend Lionel Messi was the last player to claim the Ballon d'Or in 2021 after a splendid season with his former club Barcelona. It was Messi's record sixth Ballon d'Or trophy and he is once again deemed as one of the favourites to clinch the title this year.

Messi won the Copa del Rey and scored 30 goals in the La Liga for Barcelona in what proved to be his last season for the Spanish giants. While he has had a not-so-perfect start to life at his new club PSG, Messi also led Argentina to Copa America triumph, winning his maiden international title last season which makes him one of the strongest contenders for Ballon d'Or 2021.

The winners of men's Ballon d'Or, women's Ballon d'Or along with the Kopa Trophy (best performing player under the age of 21) and Yashin Trophy (best goalkeeper) will be announced on Tuesday at the Ballon d'Or 2021 award ceremony. Here is all you need to know about Ballon d'Or 2021 -

Robert Lewandowski threatens to deny Lionel Messi a record-extending seventh Ballon d'Or title as the prestigious awards ceremony returns Monday after it was cancelled last year because of the pandemic.

The Bayern Munich and Poland striker pilfered a Bundesliga record 41 goals in just 29 games last season to eclipse the long-standing mark set by the late Gerd Mueller. Lewandowski, 33, scooped FIFA's prize for best male player of 2020 and has the backing of both coach Julian Nagelsmann and Bayern team-mate Thomas Mueller after a prolific start to the new campaign.

"'Lewy' has to win the thing on Monday when you see the way he is playing at the moment," Mueller said of a player who has already scored 25 times in 20 appearances this season. Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have combined to win 11 of the past 12 editions of the Ballon d'Or, the lone exception in 2018 when Luka Modric helped Real Madrid to another Champions League triumph and inspired Croatia to the World Cup final.

"Robert deserves to win it, because in my view he has been more unbelievably consistent than any other player," Nagelsmann said last month in an interview with Munich newspaper Abendzeitung.

While Messi has endured a stop-start beginning to life at Paris Saint-Germain, the Argentine bagged 30 league goals in his farewell season at Barcelona and also won the Copa del Rey.

Further strengthening his case was a first major international trophy in July, as Argentina beat rivals Brazil to win the Copa America at the Maracana -- ending the country's 28-year wait for the title.

Seventh heaven?

"My biggest prize was what I was able to achieve with the national team," Messi told Catalan daily Sport recently. "After having fought and fought so much for that achievement, it was the best given all that it cost.

"If the Ballon d'Or were to arrive, it would be extraordinary for what it would mean to win one more. The seventh would be crazy." Ronaldo last took home the trophy in 2017. The Champions League's all-time top scorer has struck in all five games in Europe during his second spell at Manchester United but appears an outside contender for a sixth Ballon d'Or.

Karim Benzema received support from Thierry Henry, Zinedine Zidane and tennis star Rafael Nadal following a tremendous year with Real Madrid. However the France star this week received a one-year suspended sentence for complicity in a bid to blackmail his former international team-mate Mathieu Valbuena with a sex tape. He was also given a 75,000-euro ($84,000) fine.

Five members of Italy's Euro 2020-winning squad feature on the 30-man shortlist, including Chelsea midfielder and Champions League winner Jorginho. Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland -- viewed as Ballon d'Or winners of the future -- also feature alongside Neymar and Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah, the leading Premier League scorer this term.

Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas, the UEFA women's player of the year, is a leading candidate to succeed 2019 Ballon d'Or winner Megan Rapinoe. The American was not among the 20 nominees.

Putellas is joined by Barca team-mates Jennifer Hermoso and Lieke Martens following their Champions League triumph, with Australia's Sam Kerr among five Chelsea representatives. Christine Sinclair, of Olympic gold medal-winning Canada, is also in the running. The Kopa trophy will be handed out to the best young men's player, while 10 goalkeepers are shortlisted for the Yashin trophy.

Robert Lewandowski tipped for Ballon d'Or as Lionel Messi eyes seventh prize

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are all set to battle it out once again after being nominated for the prestigious Ballon d'Or honour this year. The coveted individual prize is awarded by France Football to the best player of the year in terms of performances and trophies won. The award was not handed out last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is back this year and the winner will be announced on November 29.

The Ballon d'Or is considered one of the most prestigious individual honours in world football and remains a dream for professional footballers around the globe. Messi and Ronaldo have dominated the awards over the years, claiming as many as eleven honours between them so far. While six-time winner Messi holds the record for winning most Ballon d'Ors, Ronaldo has won it a staggering five times.

However, the two football icons might not be the favourites when it comes to clinching the Ballon d'Or this year. Both Messi and Ronaldo failed to inspire their respective clubs to league titles last season as Inter Milan pipped Juventus to win the Serie A while Atletico Madrid left Barcelona behind to win the La Liga title.

Nonetheless, Messi inspired Argentina to a magnificent Copa America triumph to also bring an end to his international trophy drought. He remains one of the top contenders for the Ballon d'Or 2021 but is all set to face intense competition from some other stars, who enjoyed a stellar season with their club and country.

Here we take a look at 4 players who can pip Messi and Ronaldo to win Ballon d'Or 2021:

1) Jorginho (Chelsea)

One of the favourites, if not the favourite for a shock win at Ballon d'Or 2021. Chelsea midfielder Jorginho enjoyed a stunning season with the Blues. He was instrumental in helping Chelsea win the Champions League title and the UEFA Super Cup before inspiring Italy to a magnificent triumph at the Euro 2020. The Italian midfielder was at the heart of Chelsea's tremendous success last season and has emerged as one of the top contenders for Ballon d'Or 2021.

2) Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

Kevin De Bruyne has been one of the most consistent performers for Manchester City under Pep Guardiola. The Belgian midfielder scored 12 goals and produced 13 assists for City across competitions, helping them win the Premier League and the Carabao Cup last season. He has been one of the best players in the Premier League for a few years now and might bag a podium finish at the Ballon d'Or 2021 awards.

3) Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich)

Many believe Robert Lewandowski was robbed of a chance to win his maiden Ballon d'Or last season when the award was scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Lewandowski was at it once again, scoring a stunning 50 goals for Bayern across all competitions. He fires Bayern to the Bundesliga and the Club World Cup title while also producing eight assists. The Polish striker also won the Golden Boot for being the highest scorer in Europe last season.

4) N'Golo Kante (Chelsea)

Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante has been one of the best players in the Premier League since arriving from Leicester City in 2016. Kante was a force to reckon with in the Chelsea midfield as he helped the club clinch the Champions League last season. Despite having fitness issues, he was one of the best performers for his club and class bag the Man of the Match award in the Champions League final against Manchester City.

It was the first time and it was nice. But winning it is another story." ALSO READ: Football: From Foden to Felix - Six young stars to watch at Euro 2020 "It's a great individual reward. Football: It’s a great reward but there’s a long way to go: N’Golo Kante on Ballon d'Or

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has upheld N'Golo Kante over Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Ballon d'Or award in 2021.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have ruled the Ballon d'Or awards. In any case, N'Golo Kante's splendid exhibitions for Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League have made him one of the top picks to guarantee the renowned individual prize this year.

In a conversation with Eurosport, Paul Pogba said: "What I would like to say to the whole world is that the N'Golo Kante we have seen in recent months has always been the same.

"We talk a lot about his performances but he has always been as good as ever.

"There was no Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the semi-final [of the Champions League], so it's good to see the performances of the midfielders or even the defenders.

"I said a long time ago that it would be appropriate, if Chelsea won, for him to win the Ballon d'Or. It would be deserved too.

"He's always performed well. I'm not surprised what he's doing, I'm just surprised that he's still doing it. He has always played matches like that."

Despite the fact that Juventus and Barcelona couldn't win their particular leagues and didn't affect the UEFA Champions League, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have had dazzling individual seasons.

Cristiano Ronaldo won the top scorer award in Serie A, Lionel Messi asserted the Pichichi award in La Liga. Cristiano Ronaldo's and Lionel Messi's exhibitions at Euro 2020 and Copa America if the competition goes through individually could go far in choosing the Ballon d'Or race.

Football: N'Golo Kante deserves to win Ballon d'Or, says Paul Pogba

France Football has announced that this year's Ballon d'Or will be cancelled due to "lack of sufficient fair conditions".

The coveted award that has been dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will not be awarded for this season. The Prestigious trophy will be cancelled due to coronavirus pandemic.

These awards are given to the best player on the planet. The ceremony began in 1956, ever since then these prizes have been given out.

With this year's ceremony cancelled, 2019 winner Lionel Messi will still be crowned for the next 12 months.

"There will be no edition in 2020, because it turns out, after thoughtful consideration, that all the conditions are not met," said Pascal Ferre, the editor of the magazine.

France Football said that it would be "unfair" for some leagues, including Ligue 1, to vote on the world's best player as they cancelled their season early.

Ferre also said that it would not be right to judge players based on games played without spectators present.

"We believe that such a singular year cannot... be treated as an ordinary year," he added.

"Two months (January and February), out of the eleven generally required to form an opinion and decide who should lift the trophies, represent far too little to gauge and judge, without forgetting that the other games were played –- or will be played –- in unusual conditions (behind closed doors, with five replacements, Champions League's Final 8 played in a single game)."

Messi nets sublime hat-trick as Barcelona rout Mallorca

Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde said the football world must get used to the idea that Lionel Messi will retire in the near future, adding that he will cherish being able to tell people he was able to coach the Argentine.

Messi was crowned world player of the year for a record sixth time when he received the Ballon d'Or in Paris on Monday and set alarm bells ringing by saying in his speech "you enjoy these moments more because my retirement is getting nearer".

"It's something natural, it seems normal, Leo is 32-years-old and although I don't think he's thinking about retiring now it's something which is in the air," Valverde told reporters ahead of his side's La Liga game at home to Real Mallorca on Saturday.

"But I don't think we should go crazy about it, we have to look at it naturally. Everyone thinks about retirement when they get to a certain age, but just because he's thinking about it doesn't mean he's going to retire in the next three days."

Valverde added that he may only begin to truly appreciate Messi's greatness in a few years' time, comparing the forward's impact on the game as that of the late Argentine Alfredo di Stefano, who led Real Madrid to five consecutive European Cups.

"I'm aware of how lucky I am but sometimes the demands of everyday life means you are not allowed to enjoy everything. I think you appreciate these things more with time," he added.

"I'm aware that I have the enormous fortune of being able to say in a few years I coached Leo.

"In the same way that older people talk about Di Stefano, we will be able to tell future generations that we lived through the Messi era and some people like me will be able to say we enjoyed it close by."

Messi has scored 11 goals this season for Barca and struck a superb winner in last week's 1-0 win at Atletico Madrid which kept the Catalans top of the standings, locked on 31 points with Real Madrid.

Barca will still be without injured trio Nelson Semedo, Ousmane Dembele and Jordi Alba for the game with promoted Mallorca, who are 17th in the standings and have lost four of their last six league outings.

Lionel Messi receives his sixth Ballon d'Or, Megan Rapinoe bags women's award

Lionel Messi said he hoped to carry on undimmed by age after claiming a record sixth men's Ballon d'Or award at the age of 32 in Paris on Monday, while USA World Cup superstar Megan Rapinoe took the women's prize.

Lionel Messi said he hoped to carry on undimmed by age after claiming a record sixth men's Ballon d'Or award at the age of 32 in Paris on Monday, while USA World Cup superstar Megan Rapinoe took the women's prize. Rapinoe was not at the Chatelet Theatre in the French capital, unable to make the trip back to the country where she led the USA to victory in July. However, Messi was there with his wife, Antonella Roccuzzo, and two of their children. It is Messi's first Ballon d'Or since 2015 and his sixth overall as he moves one ahead of old rival Cristiano Ronaldo. "It is 10 years since I won my first Ballon d'Or here in Paris and I remember coming here with my three brothers, I was 22 and it was all unthinkable for me what I was going through," Messi said on stage after receiving the award from last year's winner Luka Modric. "I hope I have several years left to keep enjoying my football. I am aware of the age I have and these moments are all the more enjoyable because the moment when I have to retire is getting closer and that is difficult. "All going well I'll have several years left but at the moment time seems to be flying and everything is happening very quickly. "I hope to keep enjoying my football, my family, facing my rivals and all of this life that I have." Van Dijk comes second The Barcelona number 10 won this year's prize -- organised by France Football magazine and voted for by a panel of journalists from around the world -- ahead of Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, with Ronaldo third. It is the first time since 2010 that Ronaldo has failed to rank in the top two. Having starred in the Liverpool team that won the Champions League, Van Dijk finished second to Messi just as he did in the voting for FIFA's equivalent prize, The Best, in September. "Unfortunately there are a couple of players like him who are a bit unnatural. Six times Ballon d'Or -- you need to respect greatness as well," said Van Dijk. Van Dijk was one of four Liverpool players in the top 10, with Sadio Mane fourth, Mohamed Salah fifth and goalkeeper Alisson seventh. The latter won a new prize for the goalkeeper of the year, named after former USSR icon Lev Yashin. Messi has scored 46 goals in 54 matches so far in 2019, and netted 36 times in total in 34 La Liga matches last season as Barcelona won the title. He did not enjoy a successful Copa America with Argentina but was also the top scorer in last season's Champions League with 12 goals. As if any reminder of his brilliance were required, on Sunday he scored a wonderful late winner for Barcelona against Atletico Madrid. 'Incredible year' for Rapinoe This is just the second year that a women's Ballon d'Or -- voted for by 48 journalists -- has been awarded, with Rapinoe succeeding Norway's Ada Hegerberg. Rapinoe was the star of the Women's World Cup on, and off, the field, winning the Golden Boot for top scorer, with six goals, and Golden Ball for best player. She scored the opening goal as the USA beat the Netherlands 2-0 in the final. But the 34-year-old feminist icon made headlines with her outspoken criticism of US President Donald Trump during the tournament and has led calls for her team to be paid the same as their male counterparts. "It's been an incredible year," said Rapinoe in a recorded video message. "I want to say a huge thank you to my team-mates, the coaches, the US Soccer Federation, for all of the support to allow me to be who I am and do what I do on the field but also be the person who I am off the field." Rapinoe was one of four members of the US side that lifted the World Cup to be nominated for the prize, along with Tobin Heath, Rose Lavelle and Alex Morgan, who finished third on Monday. England's Lucy Bronze came second. Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt, the ex-Ajax star now at Juventus, succeeded Kylian Mbappe as the winner of the Kopa Trophy for the best player aged under 21.

Messi wins sixth Ballon d'Or as Rapinoe takes women's prize

The biggest names in world football will descend on Paris on Monday for the 2019 Ballon d'Or ceremony, with Lionel Messi and USA women's World Cup superstar Megan Rapinoe tipped to leave with the honours.

The biggest names in world football will descend on Paris on Monday for the 2019 Ballon d'Or ceremony, with Lionel Messi and USA women's World Cup superstar Megan Rapinoe tipped to leave with the honours. It would be an enormous shock if Rapinoe did not depart the Chatelet Theatre with the women's prize as she returns to the country where she was the driving force on and off the field for the United States as they retained their title. The suspense surrounds the identity of the men's winner, 12 months after Croatia's Luka Modric claimed the crown thanks to his exploits in dragging his country to the World Cup final and winning the Champions League with Real Madrid. That ended a decade in which Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo had won the Ballon d'Or five times each, but the smart money now is on the Barcelona man claiming number six. There are 30 nominees in total for the prize, organised by France Football magazine and voted for by 180 journalists from around the world. The case for Van Dijk Among the names is Ronaldo, as well as several of the stars of the Liverpool side who won the Champions League, chief among them Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk. At one point he looked like the favourite, but Messi already pipped him to FIFA's The Best title in September. The 32-year-old top-scored in La Liga last season with 36 goals as Barcelona won the title. He did not have a great Copa America with Argentina, but his genius is undeniable. "If you give the Ballon d'Or to the best player of this generation then you should give it always to Lionel Messi. That's how it is," admitted Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. "But if you give it to the best player of last season, then it was Virgil van Dijk. I don't know exactly how it will work but that is how I see it." The value of individual honours in football is debatable, and the timing unsatisfactory, coming midway through the European club season. Yet surely nobody could suggest Rapinoe would not be a deserving winner of just the second women's Ballon d'Or, an award voted for by a panel of 48 journalists. Norway's Ada Hegerberg won it in 2018 but will not retain her title after missing the World Cup. Among the stars of that tournament to be nominated are England's Lucy Bronze, Netherlands striker Vivianne Miedema, Australia's Sam Kerr and the USA trio of Alex Morgan, Rose Lavelle and Tobin Heath. However Rapinoe, the 34-year-old feminist icon and outspoken critic of US President Donald Trump, should add this honour to those of Golden Boot winner for top scorer and Golden Ball for best player at the World Cup. Even her supposed rivals seem to be rooting for her. "She does lots of things off the pitch, but I think she is the favourite to win the Ballon d'Or mainly down to her performances during the World Cup," Bronze told France Football.

Messi and Rapinoe expected to take Ballon d'Or honours

Liverpool dominates Ballon d'Or shortlist with seven names

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo said he deserves to end his soccer career with more Ballon d'Or awards than Barcelona counterpart Lionel Messi and hopes to establish himself as the greatest player of all time.

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo said he deserves to end his soccer career with more Ballon d'Or awards than Barcelona counterpart Lionel Messi and hopes to establish himself as the greatest player of all time. Ronaldo, 34, has won the renowned France Football magazine trophy for the world's best player five times - as many as Messi - but is eager for more as he moves into the twilight of his career. "Messi's in the history of football," Ronaldo told broadcaster Piers Morgan in an interview with Britain's ITV on Tuesday. "But I think I have to have six or seven or eight to be above him," he said, referring to the Ballon d'Or awards. "I'd love it, I think I deserve it." The Portugal captain said he was no friend of the Argentine but credited his rival for helping push him further in his own career. "My relationship with him is, we are not friends, but we have shared this stage for 15 years," Ronaldo said. "I know that he has pushed me to be a better player and I have pushed him to be a better player as well." Ronaldo, who also played for Manchester United and Real Madrid, has five UEFA Champions League winners' medals and led Portugal to victory at the 2016 UEFA European Championship and 2019 UEFA Nations League tournaments. "I don't follow the records, the records follow me. I'm addicted to the success, and I don't think it's something bad, I think it's good," Ronaldo said. "It motivates me. If you're not motivated, it's better to stop."

I deserve more Ballon d'Or awards than Messi, says Ronaldo

Former UEFA chief Michel Platini was released from custody by the French Police early on Wednesday. No charges were brought against the former number 10 of Les Bleus after almost 15 hours of questioning, reported news agency Associated Press.

"I have always been at peace because I feel totally foreign to any of these matters. This is an old case, you know it, we explained it. I have always expressed myself with full transparency in all the newspapers. That's it, it goes on, they investigate, they search," said Platini after his release.

"A lot of noise for nothing. There you go, very long questioning. Michel Platini gave his testimony by answering as sincerely and precisely as he could, to all the questions put to him. I would remind you that he was heard 18 months ago as well, as a witness in a free hearing. We do not consider in any way that Michel Platini can be considered a suspect in any way, either yesterday or today or tomorrow. So it's a done deal for us," his lawyer William Bourdon said.
