<p>Reflecting on the missed chance, Rohit sounded disappointed with his effort, adding he failed even by the standards he had set for himself.</p>

<p>With 46 players retained by the 10 franchises before the&nbsp;October 31 deadline, franchises are now gearing up for the auctions as they try to build their squad for IPL 2025. <p>With the IPL 2025 mega auction just around the corner, Delhi Capitals have zeroed in on the players leading the retention race, with Captain Rishabh Pant first on the list. Shortly after Pant hammered his sixth Test hundred against Bangladesh in Chennai – the joint-most by an Indian keeper-batter in Tests, the latest reports began surfacing, claiming the management locked in Pant as the number one pick.</p>

<p>Per Cricbuzz, the Delhi Capitals’ ownership group confirmed that Pant is the first name on the retention list, while all-rounder Axar Patel and ace spinner Kuldeep Yadav are next in line. Though the BCCI has yet to release the revised retention rules, with the announcement expected shortly, this decision came following a constructive meeting between franchise co-owner Parth Jindal and Pant in Mumbai.</p>

<p>Pant’s current IPL salary is $1.91 million (INR 16 crore), which is likely to increase based on the total player purse allowed to a team and the retention fee guidelines set by the apex cricket body in India.</p>

Though ahead of the start of the tournament, Ganguly – DC’s Director of Cricket, claimed that Pant might only play as a batter, the India gloveman attained full fitness and kept wickets throughout the tournament.</p>

<p>In IPL 2024, Pant scored 443 runs in 13 matches, with an impressive strike-rate of 155.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Participating in the T20 World Cup in the Americas, Pant guided his team to their second title. Currently, on his Test return against Bangladesh in Chennai, Pant completed a hundred (109) in the second innings.</p>

<h2><strong>India beat England in the final</strong></h2>

<p>In a contest that was the repeat of the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal, India was in no mood to repeat their mistakes as they dismantled England left, right and centre. Tasked to defend 172 runs, India bowled out England for 103 in 16.4 overs as Kuldeep Yadav (19/3) and Axar Patel (23/3) saw Rohit Sharma’s men through to the final. Harry Brook (25) and Jos Buttler were the only English batters to show some fight on the day, but India was not holding back as they now look to end their ICC trophy drought.</p>

<h2><strong>What happened in the Indian innings?</strong></h2>

<p>Asked to bat first after losing the toss, Indian captain Rohit Sharma was once again on fire as he scored 57 off 39 and was seen in great form before being scalped by Adil Rashid. However, his innings came after India had lost Virat Kohli (9) and Rishabh Pant (4) early in the innings. Rohit was seen in full swing with Suryakumar Yadav (47) also contributing to India’s winning cause.</p>

<p>Axar Patel plucked a stunner out of thin air to bring India back in the contest against Australia, defending a total of 206 in the penultimate Group-1, Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chasing the challenging target, Australia were off to a poor start as David Warner edged one straight to Suryakumar Yadav, standing at first slip in the opening over by Arshdeep Singh. However, captain Mitch March and Travis Head joined forces and immediately started landing the counter-punches.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When it looked like the game was running away from India, Kuldeep Yadav bowled a flatter one on middle and leg in the ninth over which was smashed to Axar, stationed at deep backward square leg.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The all-rounder could not judge the ball early but adjusted himself and jumped at the right moment to not only grab the catch but also land safely so that the ball did not lob out of his hands.&nbsp;</p>

While Axar slammed his first fifty of the season, scoring a gritty 66 off 43 balls, including four sixes and five fours, Captain Pant remained unbeaten 88 off 43 balls.</p>

<p>His last-over exploits against Mohit Sharma saw the GT seamer concede the most runs for a bowler in an IPL inning (0/73).&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If 12 players are not playing at the international level, then what is the need for it in IPL? With 12 players, even if four wickets are down, the next player is not scared of getting out or making the team stable, they come and play their shots. So either the nature of tracks should be changed or 12 players should not be allowed," said Mukesh.</p>

<p>The Impact Player rule has indeed given the teams a chance to maximise the 20 overs. The rule has come in handy for teams like Chennai Super Kings (CSK) who have used Shivam Dube as an impact sub while batting and have gotten good runs out of him.</p>

Following the latest scans, Axar needs approximately three weeks to completely recover from the quadriceps strain he sustained during the Asia Cup 2023, meaning he would have to sit out for at least the first half of the tournament had he been picked.
