It's the holiday season! And everyone wishes to be with their loved ones and enjoy the merriment from Christmas celebrations to the New Year. The same goes with an Australian couple, who is ready to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a private jet costing approximately US$32,000 to fly their pet dog home from New Zealand. The story of Munchkin, a former Bali street dog is nothing short of a Hollywood movie. The journey started over five years ago when Sunshine Coast-based woman Natasha Corbin laid her eyes on the pooch when she was living in Bali with her fiancé David Daynes, as reported by ABC. "I just ignored all of the dogs as best as I could and this dog, Munchkin, she was just a little tiny puppy, would follow us around because she had just somehow ended up near our villa," she added. Corbin further mentioned that the canine spent three years in Singapore with various foster families after failing medical tests to enter Australia, which has strict rules around importing pets. She explained that the reason why the couple was in New Zealand in 2019, as she said that they wanted to get the pet dog cleared to come to Australia. But Corbin eventually returned home alone for medical reasons. Meanwhile, Daynes waited for the green light from Australia. "The money part is not the number one driver, it's about who can most certainly get them home before Christmas. Christmas is a really big deal for us... I just want us all to be together," she told AFP. "We stopped counting about three years ago when it got to Aus$40,000. We didn't ever at the start of this process expect that it would cost this much or take this long. We expected it to be Aus$10,000 and six weeks," she said. The couple is also hoping to split the costs by recruiting passengers, offering to foot half of the jet bill while selling four remaining seats to other travellers, or perhaps hitching a ride on another private charter. The entire process has cost so much money that Corbin has christened the dog "Million Dollar Munchkin" on social media. China has warned Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada, saying that nations would "pay the price" for the diplomatic boycott of the upcoming 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. On Monday (December 6), the US announced a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics citing reports of 'egregious' human rights violations, which China has denied repeatedly. Hours after the United States' announcement, Australia, the UK and Canada also confirmed that they will not send government officials to the Games, which will be held between February 4 to February 20 next year. In the aftermath, Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson at the Chinese foreign ministry told a regular news conference: "The United States, Britain and Australia have used the Olympics platform for political manipulation. They will have to pay the price for their mistaken acts." Meanwhile, France on Thursday said it will not be boycotting the Games, adding that violations of human rights in China must be condemned. French Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer told BFM TV: "As for a diplomatic boycott... France will not do it... Sports is a world in itself, which must be protected from political interference, otherwise... we can end up by killing the competition." It is important to note that International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach said Wednesday (December 8) that he was staying politically neutral on the matter. He insisted that the important point is the "participation of the athletes in the Olympic Games". Australia joins United States in boycotting Beijing winter Olympics over China's human rights abuses

China on Wednesday reacted sharply to Australia's decision to join the US diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, saying that it never planned to invite Australian officials and nobody cares whether they come or not. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in Canberra on Wednesday that the decision to join the US boycott was in response to "human rights abuses" in China's Muslim-majority Xinjiang province and "many other issues that Australia has consistently raised". Australian athletes would however attend the Games to be held in February, he said.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Wang Wenbin said Beijing has lodged a diplomatic protest in response to Australia's diplomatic boycott. The relations between Beijing and Canberra turned turbulent in 2018 and nosedived further after China took exception to Australia's call for global inquiry into the origin of the COVID-19. The coronavirus outbreak was first reported in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019. Australia also ramped up measures to address growing concerns of Chinese political influence in Australian society including the government, universities and media and questioned China's maritime claims over the South China Sea. Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan have counterclaims.

China has retaliated by curtailing Australia's exports. The relations were further exacerbated after Australia joined the US-UK alliance called AUKUS to curb Beijing's growing influence in the Indo-Pacific. The pact also paves the way for Australia to acquire nuclear-powered submarines. The diplomatic boycott meant that no top official of the US or its diplomats will take part in the inaugural and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Winter Olympics, which will take the sheen from the prestigious event that also makes the Chinese capital the only city in the world to have hosted summer and winter Olympic games. China hosted the Summer Olympics in 2008.

The US first lady Jill Biden led the American contingent to the Summer Olympics in Tokyo this year and the second gentleman Doug Emhoff led a delegation to the Paralympic Games. China has already announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin has accepted his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping's invitation to attend the inauguration ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics to be held in February next year.

England fast bowler James Anderson, who will lock horns with his old foe when the Ashes begin here on December 8, has a grudging respect for Australian opener David Warner. Anderson said that Warner still has "too much for England" and "we are not going to take him lightly".

Warner's heroics at the T20 World Cup signalled he is back to his explosive best.

"His record in Australia is ridiculous, so we know it's going to be a different animal to the one we faced in 2019 in our summer. We've played so much cricket against Warner, we know you can never say you're actually on top of him -- he's that good of a batter, he's got that much quality," Anderson told Fox Sports.

"Many had written him off before the T20 World Cup, only to have him prove how important he is at the top of the order," he said, referring to Warner finding form again in leading Australia to the title last month.

"I think he is even more important in the Test lineup," added Chappell. "A skilful, fast-scoring opening batsman can be invaluable in setting up the game. Teams with aggressive openers cause opposition captains and bowlers to toss and turn at night."

One major disadvantage of social media is that it allows massive trolling based on anonymity, hampering the mental health of many people. However, now many countries are introducing laws that will allow breaking the barrier of anonymity, thus stopping online trolling.

The Australian government has been examining new legislation to tackle the problem of online trolls. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced that under the new law, social media giants will be required to provide details of users who post defamatory comments.

"The online world should not be a wild west where bots and bigots and trolls and others are anonymously going around and can harm people," Morrison said at a press briefing.

He added, "That is not what can happen in the real world, and there is no case for it to be able to be happening in the digital world."

In what can be called a major break from tradition for the top job in Australian cricket, Pat Cummins has been named as Australia’s 47th male Test captain.

After getting the job, Cummins paid tribute to the leadership of Tim Paine.

After Paine’s resignation last week, former captain Steve Smith will serve as Cummins’ deputy.

Cummins was one of the favourites to succeed Paine. He was made the sole vice-captain a year ago.

Even as several countries and the WHO is on their toes over the emergence of a new coronavirus variant, Australia on Friday said it has no plans to restrict flights from South Africa, from where the new strain has surfaced.

Australia’s health minister Greg Hunt said the officials were assessing the threat posed by the strain and would not introduce restrictions on arrivals from southern Africa yet.

Hunt said that he was advised by the country’s chief medical officer, Paul Kelly, that there was “no basis for change” in border arrangements, but he assured to “act quickly if there’s advice”.

Australia is considering not sending any government officials to the Winter Olympics to be held in Beijing next year amid growing calls from lawmakers for an official diplomatic boycott, the Sydney Morning Herald said in a report on Thursday. Australian politicians from the ruling Liberal-National coalition and the opposition Labor party are urging the federal government to boycott the event, which will be held in February, the newspaper reported without citing a source.

A diplomatic boycott would involve not sending a delegation of officials, but allowing athletes to participate.
"A decision on (Australia`s) representation at the Beijing Winter Olympics is yet to be made," a spokesperson for Sports Minister Richard Colbeck said in an emailed response. Australia`s foreign affairs department did not respond to a request seeking comment. President Joe Biden last week said the United States is considering a diplomatic boycott of the Olympics, a move that would be aimed at protesting China`s human rights record, including what Washington says is genocide against minority Muslims.

Britain has not yet made any decision on who will represent its government at the Olympics but Prime Minister Boris Johnson does not support the idea of boycotts, said his spokesman earlier this week. The Australian government is awaiting the decision by the Biden administration before it makes a call on a diplomatic boycott, the report in the Sydney Morning Herald said.

Australia on Wednesday classified all of Hezbollah— a Lebanese Shia Islamist political party, which also has a militia wing—as a terrorist group.

Apart from that, the government also placed a neo-Nazi group known as The Base in the new terrorist group list.

Home affairs minister Karen Andrews said the Iran-backed Shiite group “continues to threaten terrorist attacks and provide support to terrorist organisations” and poses a “real and credible” threat to Australia.

“There is no place in Australia for their hateful ideologies,” Andrews told reporters.

“We know that there are individuals actively watching what is happening in Australia. There are people here who have the intent and the capability to do us harm,” she added.

Hezbollah, which plays a key role in Lebanese politics, has been accused of fuelling Syria's civil war by sending thousands of fighters across the border to prop up President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Australia to ease border ban, fully vaccinated visa holders to be allowed

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Monday said that he will allow foreign visa holders to enter the country from the beginning of December. This comes in as the country takes further steps to restart international travel.

"The return of skilled workers and students to Australia is a major milestone in our pathway back," Morrison told reporters in Canberra.

Australia had shut its international border in May 2020 to curb the spread of growing coronavirus cases. However, the country allowed only restricted people to enter.

Australia has been fighting the problem of vaccine hesitancy and the officials have been urging locals to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Also, Australia will be allowing in vaccinated tourists from South Korea and Japan beginning from the same date, that is, December 1.

Meanwhile, the head of the Australian Medical Association in Queensland had earlier warned that people who refuse Covid vaccinations in Australia will lead a lonely and miserable life. "Life will be miserable without being vaccinated. You won’t be able to hide," Dr Chris Perry said on a local news channel.

"You won’t be able to get a doctor to sign off that you got an exclusion" because there will be several restrictions. The doctors will be ordered to take immense care as all exclusion notices will be strictly looked at and doctors will be fined if any error is spotted in those exclusion certificates. He also added that the patients who are caught lying will be charged with fraud.

"There's a whole pile of issues, a whole pile of problems if you try and get around the system," Perry said.
