Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic trained at the Australian Open venue Tuesday in search of a record 21st Grand Slam but his dream hung in the balance as the government pondered cancelling his visa, again.

The world number one had scored a stunning courtroom victory the day before, overturning the Australian government's decision to cancel his visa on Covid-19 vaccination grounds.

The unvaccinated 34-year-old Serbian ace now says he is determined to stay in Melbourne and compete in the Australian Open, which starts in just six days.

"I remain focused on that. I flew here to play at one of the most important events we have in front of the amazing fans," Djokovic said on Instagram Monday.

Wearing a t-shirt and shorts, he limbered up in a gym Tuesday accompanied by coach Goran Ivanisevic before going into the players' area and heading for centre court at Melbourne Park, two AFP journalists saw.

Djokovic, a nine-time Australian Open champion, jetted into the country six days ago carrying a medical exemption from vaccination due to a positive coronavirus test on December 16 last year.

After overnight questioning at Melbourne airport, border officials decided the exemption was not valid, cancelled his visa and transferred him to a detention centre pending deportation.

"I am not vaccinated," Djokovic had told the border official, according to a transcript released by the court.

He expressed bewilderment that the exemption, approved by two medical panels in Australia, was not being accepted.

The limited number of foreigners allowed into Australia must be fully vaccinated or have a medical exemption. The government insists that a recent infection does not count as an exemption.

Federal circuit court judge Anthony Kelly dramatically reversed the visa decision Monday, ordering the cancellation be "quashed", that the player be released immediately from detention, and that the government pay his legal costs.

The government had surrendered the case after conceding that Djokovic's airport interview was "unreasonable" because the player had not been given the promised time to respond before his visa was torn up.

It was "the biggest victory in his career, bigger than all his Grand Slams", his mother Dijana said at a press conference in Belgrade.

"Truth and justice came to the light. I would like to thank the justice system of Australia," said his brother Djordje in Belgrade, adding that Djokovic had been able to train since being released from detention.

Australia's government says it is considering its next move.

Immigration Minister Alex Hawke's office said the judge had ruled on a "procedural ground".

"It remains within immigration minister Hawke's discretion to consider cancelling Mr Djokovic's visa under his personal power of cancellation," his office said in a statement to media Monday.

"The minister is currently considering the matter and the process remains ongoing."

Until Monday, he had been held at the former Park Hotel, a five-storey detention facility, which holds about 32 migrants trapped in Australia's hardline immigration system -- some for many years.

Hundreds of Djokovic fans, anti-vaccination protesters and migration rights activists had rallied outside the centre daily during his stay, scrawling graffiti on the walls, hanging banners from the building and singing and dancing.

On Tuesday morning, there were just two television reporters outside and no protesters.

A lonely cardboard sign read: "Free Novak and all the refugees".

Chalk scrawled on the front of the hotel said: "#gameover free the refugees".

The ATP, which runs the men's tennis tour, said the affair leading up to the court case had been "damaging on all fronts, including for Novak's well-being and preparation for the Australian Open".

The top tennis body said it respected the "sacrifices" of Australians, who have endured travel restrictions and rolling lock-downs for two years."

But it added: "In travelling to Melbourne, it's clear Novak Djokovic believed he had been granted a necessary medical exemption."

Rafael Nadal, one of Djokovic's main rivals for the title, said "it is the fairest thing" for the Serbian to play in the Australian Open.

"Regardless of whether or not I agree on some things with Djokovic, without any doubt, justice has spoken," Nadal told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.

Tennis great Martina Navratilova said on social media: "Though I disagree with not getting vaccinated; at the end of the day it seems Novak did play by the rules as they were for the exemption and was burned. Let him play."

Though it had no bearing on his court case, Djokovic's claim of a positive test on December 16 stirred controversy after it emerged he had attended a gathering that day for the Serbian national postal service, which launched a stamp series in his honour.

And pictures shared by the Belgrade tennis federation showed him at a young players' event in the city on December 17.

It was reported that he handed over cups and prizes to players. No one was wearing a mask.

Novak Djokovic back in training as Australian Open dream hangs in balance after court battle

After a full week of controversy, the world's biggest tennis star Novak Djokovic is challenging the Australian government's decision to cancel his visa. The hearing of the case is currently underway and, here is a rundown of all the latest updates.

Australia: World number 1 tennis star locked in a dispute over vaccination status

Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic said he was 'pleased and grateful' after winning a court case in Australia against the cancellation of his visa by the authorities in the country. Djokovic had headed Down Under to take part in the Australian Open 2022 after being granted a medical exemption as he had refused to reveal the status of his COVID-19 vaccination.

However, the authorities deemed his medical exemption invalid and sent him into detention in a quarantine facility in Melbourne. The tennis star spent five days in the hotel before winning a court case to have the decision of his visa cancellation revoked during a hearing at the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia.

Judge Anthony Kelly passed the decision in his favour, ordering his immediate release from detention. After being released, Djokovic took to Twitter to rejoice at his victory and assured his supporters that he intends to stay in Melbourne and continue his bid to defend his Australian Open title in the tournament which gets underway from January 17.

"I'm pleased and grateful that the Judge overturned my visa cancellation. Despite all that has happened, I want to stay and try to compete @AustralianOpen," Djokovic said in a tweet while sharing a picture of himself with his team.

"I remain focused on that. I flew here to play at one of the most important events we have in front of the amazing fans. For now I cannot say more but THANK YOU all for standing with me through all this and encouraging me to stay strong," he added.

'Pleased and grateful': Novak Djokovic tweets after his visa cancellation is revoked ahead of Australian Open

Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic's hopes of playing in the upcoming Australian Open recieved a major boost on Monday (January 10) as the world no.1 tennis player won the court case regarding his appeal against deportation from Australia. Djokovic, who was detained by the Australian border security officials, is all set to be moved from the quarantine hotel in Melbourne after a judge ordered his immediate release from detention.

Judge Anthony Kelly passed his judgement in the favour of Djokovic, who has spent five days in detention in Melbourne after his visa was revoked by the authorities last week. Djokovic had headed Down Under to take part in the Australian Open after being granted a 'medical exemption' as he refuses to reveal his COVID-19 vaccination status. Djokovic's lawyers had revealed his medical exemption had been granted as he had tested positive for COVID-19 in December last year.

Djokovic was held up by the Australian border officials at the Melbourne airport last week where he was told he did not meet the criteria for medical exemption before being sent into detention. The world no.1 tennis player was quick to assemble his team and take up the legal route in a bid to ensure he gets to take part in the tournament.

It turned out to be a shock defeat for the Australian government in the case on Monday after judge Kelly ordered Djokovic to be released. However, Australian immigration minister Alex Hawk may try to utilise his executive powers to go against the court's decision.

"I'm instructed (the minister) will consider whether to exercise a personal power of cancellation," Hawke was quoted as saying by AFP.

Besides providing the proof for his positive COVID-19 test in December last year, Djokovic's lawyers also presented a letter in their court filings which the tennis star had recieved from Tennis Australia's chief medical officer on 30 December stating that he had been granted 'medical exemption' on the grounds that he had recently recovered from the infection.

While there were allegations of Djokovic being held captive in detention, the Australian government had maintained that the tennis superstar was free to leave the country whenever he wanted. However, Djokovic decided to stay and fight a legal battle as he looks keen on defending his Australian Open title in a bid to go above Roger Federer and rafael Nadal by winning his 21st Grand Slam title.

Australian government ready to re-cancel Novak Djokovic's visa after court orders tennis star's release

Omicron cases continue to spread virtually as a wildfire. Australia has now said that it has surpassed the grim milestone of a million Covid 19 infections with more than half of them having been recorded in just the last week.

After a week-long saga, the world's biggest tennis superstar Novak Djokovic has now won his appeal against being deported from Australia after the government revoked his visa as soon as he had landed in Australia last week. Now in the latest, an Australian judge has ruled in favor of Djokovic.

Australia: Novak Djokovic wins court case challenging deportation

Australian authorities scrambled on Sunday to file a legal defence of their decision to bar entry to tennis world number one Novak Djokovic over his COVID-19 vaccination status, as the Serbian superstar spent his fourth day in immigration detention.

Djokovic was hoping to win his 21st Grand Slam at the Australian Open, starting next week, but instead of training has been confined to a hotel used to accommodate asylum seekers. He is challenging the decision to cancel his visa after being stopped on arrival at Melbourne Airport early on Thursday.

A vocal opponent of vaccine mandates, Djokovic had declined to reveal his vaccination status or reason for seeking a medical exemption from Australia`s vaccine rules. He broke his silence on Saturday with a legal challenge saying he had been granted an exemption due to contracting - and recovering from - the virus in December.

The Melbourne drama has rocked world tennis, caused tensions between Serbia and Australia and become a flashpoint for opponents of vaccine mandates around the world.

Australia says its health department notified tournament organising body Tennis Australia in November that a recent COVID-19 infection was not necessarily grounds for exemption in the country, as it is elsewhere. Djokovic`s lawsuit says the Department of Home Affairs wrote to him this month to say he had satisfied the requirements to enter the country.

Home Affairs, due to file its defence on Sunday, requested an extension of the matter`s first hearing from Monday to Wednesday, a court representative told Reuters. The application was rejected, according to a ruling on the federal court`s website.

Djokovic`s lawyers will have up to two hours to present their case from 10 a.m. (0300 GMT) on Monday, while the government department gets two hours to present its defence from 3 p.m., the Federal Circuit and Family Court ruled.

A Home Affairs spokesperson was not immediately available for comment about its legal defence.

Health Minister Greg Hunt, asked about the furore at a media conference on Sunday, declined to comment since it was before the court, but noted that several other people involved in the tournament had their visas revoked.

Finance Minister Simon Birmingham, asked about the matter on Channel 9 television, said without referring directly to Djokovic that "there`s a clear difference between visas and entry requirements" and "entry requirements ... sit over and above the visa conditions".

Czech player Renata Voracova, who was detained in the same detention hotel as Djokovic and had her visa revoked after issues with her vaccine exemption, left the country without challenging her status, the Czech Foreign Ministry said.

Djokovic`s situation has drawn an unlikely crowd to the modest Melbourne hotel which, until this month, was best known for media reports about asylum seeker occupants claiming they were served food containing maggots.

Anti-vaccine protesters, refugee advocates and Djokovic fans have converged outside the building, which is under police guard.

"The detention of Novak Djokovic has shone a global spotlight on the Park Hotel prison, but for the 36 refugees detained there indefinitely, it`s not a game," said David Glanz, a spokesman for advocacy group Refugee Action Collective, in a statement, as a planned protest got underway.

"We fear that long after Djokovic is back on the lucrative global tennis circuit, those men will still be in detention – many of them in their ninth year of being held by the Australian government."

Home Affairs was not immediately available to respond to the protesters` claims. Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said the player had been given gluten-free food, tools to exercise and a SIM card to stay in contact with the outside world.
"It`s a positive tone from the Australian side. The Serbian government is ready to provide all the guarantees necessary for Novak to be allowed to enter Australia, the Serbian president is also involved," Brnabic said.

"We fear that long after Djokovic is back on the lucrative global tennis circuit, those men will still be in detention – many of them in their ninth year of being held by the Australian government." Home Affairs was not immediately available to respond to the protesters` claims.

Australia rushes to file defence of Novak Djokovic ban as court battle looms

The Australian government had not given tennis star Novak Djokovic an assurance that a medical exemption that he said he had to enter Australia without a COVID-19 vaccination would be accepted, government lawyers said in a court filing on Sunday.

The filing ahead of a court hearing on Monday was in defence of the government`s decision to bar entry to the world number one player over his COVID-19 vaccination status.

Djokovic is hoping to win his 21st Grand Slam at the Australian Open, starting in Melbourne on Jan. 17. But instead of training, the Serbian player has been confined in a hotel used for asylum seekers and is challenging the decision to cancel his visa after being stopped on arrival at Melbourne Airport early on Thursday.

The drama has rocked world tennis, caused tensions between Serbia and Australia and become a flashpoint for opponents of vaccine mandates around the world.

Himself a vocal opponent of vaccine mandates, Djokovic had declined to reveal his vaccination status or reason for seeking a medical exemption from Australia`s vaccination rules. But his legal team said in a filing to the court on Saturday that the player had been granted an exemption due to having had the virus in December.

Djokovic`s legal team said he had the necessary permissions to enter Australia, including an assessment from the Department of Home Affairs that responses on his travel declaration form indicated he met the conditions for quarantine-free arrival. The government disputed this.

"This is because there is no such thing as an assurance of entry by a non-citizen into Australia. Rather, there are criteria and conditions for entry, and reasons for refusal or cancellation of a visa," the government`s filing said.

It said the department`s email was not an assurance "that his so-called `medical exemption` would be accepted", and his responses could be questioned and verified on his arrival.
The government also challenged Djokovic`s claim for a medical exemption on the basis he had contracted COVID-19 and had recovered two weeks later.

"There is no suggestion that the applicant had "acute major medical illness" in December 2021. All he has said is that he tested positive for COVID-19. This is not the same," the filing said.

Djokovic`s lawyers will have up to two hours to present their case from 10 a.m. (2300 GMT on Sunday) on Monday, while the government department gets two hours to present its defence from 3 p.m. The case is being heard by the Federal Circuit and Family Court.

"The conflicting information, and the contradictory information we received, was because of the changing environment. We are in a challenging environment."

What could happen at Novak Djokovic's visa hearing in Australia?

Tennis star Novak Djokovic has been detained in a hotel after he failed to produce required papers for entry into Australia. He is being hauled up at a Melbourne immigration detention facility.

Djokovic VS Australia: Support grows for world's no. 1

Australian border agents held tennis superstar Novak Djokovic for eight hours at Melbourne airport, mostly incommunicado, before cancelling his visa and sending him to a detention centre, his lawyers said Saturday.

Djokovic secured a Covid-19 vaccine exemption from Tennis Australia and the Australian government because he had tested positive for the virus in December, which should have qualified him for entry, the lawyers argued.

"The date of the first positive Covid PCR test was recorded on 16 December 2021," his legal team said in a 32-page submission ahead of a federal court hearing Monday to appeal the visa decision.

Djokovic, who touched down in Melbourne on Wednesday night after a 25-hour trip via Dubai, had asked for a time to rest and consult his lawyers the following morning, his lawyers said.

But after a border official initially agreed, his superiors successfully pressured Djokovic to allow them to take an immediate decision on his visa, the lawyers said.

Foreigners are still mostly banned from travel to Australia, and those granted entry must be fully vaccinated or have a medical exemption.

The tennis star has been held since Thursday morning in a Melbourne detention centre "notwithstanding his requests to be moved" to another facility to train for the Australian Open, they added.

Although Djokovic has won a legal reprieve from deportation, it is unclear whether he will play in the January 17-30 tournament.

If successful, he will be gunning for a 10th Australian Open crown and a record 21st Grand Slam title -- a milestone that Spanish great Rafael Nadal is also chasing.

In an internal video leaked Saturday, Tennis Australia chief Craig Tiley said his organisation had done "everything they possibly could".

"I don't want to see my grandchildren vaccinated," said Margaret Beacham, a 67-year-old former primary school teacher. "Novak is making a stand and it's a worldwide opportunity for him to say something about vaccination status and how ridiculous it is." As much of the country tightened restrictions to battle an Omicron-fuelled wave, the state of Victoria, where Melbourne is the capital, posted a daily record of 51,356 cases Saturday. The centre holding Djokovic, previously the Park Hotel and officially known as an "alternative place of detention", houses about 32 migrants trapped in Australia's hardline immigration system -- some for years. Detainees cannot leave the hotel and nobody is allowed in or out except staff. The five-storey centre gained notoriety last year when a fire forced migrants to be evacuated, and maggots were allegedly found in the food. Djokovic's family have said the hotel is "dirty". Australian star Nick Kyrgios, who has feuded with Djokovic in the past, praised him in a news conference Saturday. "If he's allowed to play the Australian Open, I don't want any bar of him. I reckon he's going to be pissed off," Kyrgios said in Sydney ahead of a warm-up tournament before the Australian Open. "You don't become a great champion like that without being able to overcome some adversity like this." "Djokovic is not a criminal, terrorist or illegal migrant, but was treated that way by the Australian authorities which causes an understandable indignation of his fans and citizens of Serbia," a foreign ministry statement said. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has defended revoking Djokovic's visa. "Rules are rules and there are no special cases," he said. Judge Anthony Kelly warned the star's lawyers in a hearing Thursday that justice would move at its own pace through all necessary appeals. "The tail won't be wagging the dog here," he said.

Mostly incommunicado, border agents held Novak Djokovic for eight hours in Melbourne, says lawyers

Novak Djokovic has spent three days in immigration detention in a hotel in Melbourne after his visa was revoked on arrival in Australia ahead of the Australian Open. Djokovic, who has refused to reveal his COVID-19 vaccination status ahead of the tournament, had earlier this week announced that he was heading Down Under to play after being granted a 'medical exemption'.

However, the world no.1 tennis player's claim for medical exemption was rejected by the border officials in Melbourne on Wednesday night before he was placed in isolation in a hotel in Melbourne. Djokovic had last year expressed his reservations about taking part in the Australian Open this month as he had remained silent on his vaccination status.

The Australian Open rules state that all players who are to take part in the tournament along with the fans attending the matches should be vaccinated against coronavirus. However, those who are unvaccinated can obtain an exemption on the basis of medical grounds. The exemption can be granted only by an 'independent panel of medical experts'.

Djokovic and his legal team has claimed the tennis star had his medical exemption approved from two independent panels. Djokovic's lawyers revealed the tennis player had tested positive for COVID-19 in December last year and thus was eligible for a medical exemption as he could not have been vaccinated for at least the next six months after contracting the virus.

What are the circumstances based on which a medical exemption can be granted?

A medical exemption can be granted in the case of someone dealing with inflammatory cardiac illness in the last three months, or if someone has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last six months in which case the vaccine can't be administered, or if someone is undergoing major surgery, or if someone has suffered serious effects from COVID-19 vaccination in the past.

Those with mental and physical developmental disorders are also eligible to be exempted from the mandatory vaccination rules.

Why was Novak Djokovic granted a medical exemption?

Djokovic's lawyers on Saturday stated in their 35-page document lodged in the Federal court of Australia that the Serbian ace had tested positive for COVID-19 in December last year. The documents showed that he had tested positive on December 16 and was free of any symptoms for three days by December 30. He was thus granted a medical exemption on the basis that he had recently recovered from COVID-19 and was not eligible to get vaccinated for at least the next six months.

Djokovic's legal team have also presented proof of a letter that the tennis player had recieved from the Department of Home Affairs confirming that he met all the requirements for a quarantine-free arrival in Australia. However, his visa was torn apart upon arrival as his exemption was deemed invalid.

What next for Novak Djokovic in Australia?

Djokovic has decided to extend his stay in Australia and fight a legal battle against the authorities. He has challenged the decision to revoke his visa and is prepared to drag the authorities to the court to ensure he gets to defend his Australian Open title when the tournament gets underway from January 17.

Contrary to the claims that he has been held captive in a Melbourne hotel, the Australian government has maintained the Serbian player is free to leave the country at any point in time. However, it's Djokovic's decision to stay on and fight for what he believes is unfair against him as he had all pre-required approvals before travelling to the country.

The case is Djokovic V Minister for Home Affairs will be heard in court on Monday (January 10) as Djokovic's legal team continues its bid to challenge the decision to rekove the tennis star's visa despite him having 'valid visa' and 'medical exemption' - a letter from Tennis Australia`s Chief Medical Officer which permitted him entry into the country despite not being vaccinated against COVID-19.

Djokovic, a ten-time Australian Open champion is currently gunning for his 21st major title which will see him go past the legendary Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Djokovic is currently tied with Federer and Nadal, who have won 20 Grand Slams each.

The number of Omicron infections has risen more than 50 times from around 1,200 since late November when the first case was detected in the country.

Hospital admissions in New South Wales and Victoria increased by 10 per cent over the previous day and the number is expected to rise even further over the next few weeks.

"We have got some challenging weeks ahead of us," NSW Deputy Health Secretary Susan Pearce told reporters.

In recent weeks, there has been an explosion of cases which has led to long lines at publicly-funded PCR testing centres. As a result, authorities encouraged people to only seek PCRs if asymptomatic. This led to a shortage of rapid antigen tests, which can be performed at home but must be purchased privately.

Under pressure as an election year begins, Scott Morrison, leader of the centre-right Liberal-National Party coalition, has attempted to reassure voters that the situation is under control while keeping the purse strings tightly cinched.

Morrison, who must call an election before May, has ruled out subsidising the majority of at-home testing kits, citing the need for individual responsibility.

However, state leaders are expected to press Morrison to subsidise rapid antigen tests at Wednesday's cabinet meeting.

"There are no silver bullets here," Morrison told reporters ahead of a meeting of the national cabinet, the group of federal and state and territory leaders tasked with handling the pandemic.

Australia’s Old Parliament House caught fire on Thursday, damaging the entrance and the exterior of the building amid slogans of “let it burn” by the protesters.

It was not immediately clear as to who was responsible for the fire, but several local media reports indicated that the blaze took place when a small group of protesters assembled outside the building, calling for fair treatment of indigenous people.

A group named MMAMV Australia — for Millions March Against Mandatory Vaccinations — live-streamed the fire on Facebook, using the hashtag #takeoldparliament.

Other posts using the hashtag focused on colonial invasion and fighting a tyrannical empire.

The images that went viral on social media showed flames and smoke coming from wooden double-doors at the building's entrance

According to reports, the vast majority of the edifice remained untouched, and the blaze was said to have been quickly extinguished.

There was no immediate news about the extent of the damage.

Australia sought to relieve pressure on overrun COVID-19 testing facilities on Thursday (December 30) by narrowing its definition of close contacts of infected people and relaxing requirements for tests, as daily cases topped 20,000 for the first time in the pandemic.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters that from Friday (December 31) "close contacts" will be redefined as people who live in the same household with an infected person.

They would have to isolate for seven days and would only have to get a PCR test if they have COVID-19 symptoms.

The rules are being relaxed to also stop asymptomatic people being forced into isolation, especially in healthcare, hospitality and airlines, and cut long lines of people forced to get PCR tests for interstate travel or because they have been at a public site with a confirmed case.

Health officials will rely more on at-home rapid antigen tests instead.

Australia is grappling with the rapid spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant after most states eased tough restrictions, and like other countries, is betting on the highly transmissible variant being much less severe than previous variants.

Despite the Omicron wave, Australia's tally of nearly 363,000 infections and 2,225 deaths are far lower than many comparable countries.

Australia: Hundreds receive false COVID-19 results in Sydney when they were actually tested positive

A dazed England lost four wickets in a hostile late spell to leave them still trailing by 51 runs and fighting to stave off defeat Monday at stumps on day two of a gripping third Ashes Test against Australia.

It came after the visitors -- who must win in Melbourne -- were rocked by four positive Covid cases in their camp, although no players were among them.

Australia were all out for 267, earning an 82-run lead on England's first-innings 185 on an MCG pitch that was still offering plenty for the bowlers.

Marcus Harris top-scored with a battling 76 against a dangerous English attack led by veteran Jimmy Anderson, who was at his fearsome best with 4-33 off 23 overs.

After heavy defeats in Brisbane and Adelaide, England must win to keep the five-Test series alive, with Australia only needing a draw to retain the urn as holders.

But faced with surviving the final hour against a revved-up Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, England collapsed again, slumping to 31 for four at the close.

Struggling opener Zak Crawley never looked comfortable and after dodging 15 balls he was caught by wicketkeeper Alex Carey for five off Starc.

Dawid Malan came in but incredibly was out first ball to Starc lbw after an unsuccessful review, then Scott Boland ruined Haseeb Hameed's day on seven, with Carey gloving an edge.

Fired up, Boland bowled Jack Leach without scoring two balls to leave skipper Joe Root unbeaten on 12 and Ben Stokes on two -- and England in deep trouble.

England earlier took their chances with the key wickets of Marnus Labuschagne (1) and Steve Smith (16), along with nightwatchman Nathan Lyon, before lunch.

Harris (76) and Travis Head (27) surrendered in the second session before England mopped up the rest.

Australia resumed on 61 for one with the maligned Harris, who started on 20, under pressure after a poor series so far.

But he hung on grimly as Australian wickets tumbled around him to repay the faith of coach Justin Langer by bringing up only his third 50 in 13 Tests, and his first in two years.

He then fell on 76 with the brilliant Anderson enticing an edge that Root took at slip.

Head, who made a swashbuckling 152 at the first Test in Brisbane, compiled a good-looking 27 before flailing at a probing Ollie Robinson ball, also caught by Root to snap a 60-run stand with Harris.

Covid drama

Play began half an hour late after Covid drama in the England camp, with the team forced to undergo urgent rapid antigen tests as they were about to leave for the MCG.

All players came back negative, but two support staff and two family members tested positive.

Coronavirus impacted the second Test at Adelaide with Australian captain Cummins ruled out just before the start for being in close contact with a positive Covid-19 case.

When play started, Lyon didn't last, hitting 10 before prodding at a full-length Robinson delivery to Jos Buttler behind the stumps.

Harris smacked an early boundary off Anderson, but was cautious. He survived a review decision on 36 after being given out lbw and a difficult stumping on 63 before his luck finally ran out.

Labuschagne, the new number one Test batsman, had a rare failure, undone by the pace of Mark Wood, edging to Root on one in a massive moment for a resurgent England.
