An urgent search is underway in Western Australia after a tiny capsule containing the radioactive substance called Caesium-137 went missing. Authorities said that the capsule&nbsp; of radioactive Caesium-137 which is used in mining was lost while on its travel route to Perth, the state's capital. This incident prompted a radiation alert for several areas of Western Australia on Saturday.

Authorities in the biggest state of Australia sent out a warning on Friday regarding a "radioactive chemical danger" in a number of areas, including Perth. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said that the tiny, silver capsule carrying Caesium-137 went missing during transfer from north of Newman, a small town in the remote Kimberley area to northeast suburbs of Perth. Newman is about 1,200 km (750 miles) northeast of Perth.

"The substance is used within gauges in mining operations. Exposure to this substance could cause radiation burns or radiation sickness," the agency said.

According to officials, the vehicle departed the location on 12 January, but it wasn't until this week that it was realised that the capsule was gone. At that point, emergency services were informed. The capsule apparently came from a mine owned by Rio Tinto Ltd. A request for comment from the corporation reportedly did not receive an instant response.

The capsule might result in radiation burns and skin redness if it is stored close to the body, according to Western Australia's chief health officer Andrew Robertson. "They might have some more acute consequences, including implications on their immune system, if it was kept long enough and they were exposed for long enough," he told reporters. He explained that it was believed that the gauge broke apart due to the truck's vibration, which resulted in the loss of the object.

<h2>What is Caesium-137 and how can it hurt you?&nbsp;</h2>

Radioactive elements are used widely in modern medicine and industry. One of these is Caesium-137, a substance commonly used in mining operations. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), large levels of Cs-137 in the environment can result in severe radiation sickness&nbsp;and burns and sometimes death.&nbsp;

Because of the high-energy gamma radiation exposure caused by exposure to Cs-137, cancer risk may increase. Through ingesting or inhalation, internal exposure to Cs-137 enables the radioactive material to be dispersed throughout the soft tissues, particularly muscle tissue, subjecting these tissues to beta particles and gamma radiation and raising the risk of cancer.

A number of residents in a remote part of southeastern Australia struggling with rare corneal erosion which is popularly known as "Christmas Eye". This condition mostly occurs between late November and mid-January in country areas of New South Wales.&nbsp;

The agonising eye condition is caused by an orthoperus beetle that is found predominantly in parts of eastern Australia. The tiny beetle measures only half a millimetre in size.&nbsp;

As quoted by national broadcaster ABC News, Wangaratta optometrist Rob Holloway said: "They are virtually impossible to see but the beetle itself has a compound in its blood supply that is a blistering agent."&nbsp;

Holloway added, "When that gets in your eye and is released, that compound essentially makes the front surface of the eye fall off."&nbsp;

As mentioned that the condition is rare, it is typically only found in Australia's Albury-Wodonga region, about 300 kilometres northeast of Melbourne.&nbsp;

"Christmas Eye" is also known as "Albury-Wodonga syndrome" and "Harvester's Keratitis" as it linked to farming work.&nbsp;

A number of residents in a remote part of southeastern Australia struggling with rare corneal erosion which is popularly known as "Christmas Eye". This condition mostly occurs between late November and mid-January in country areas of New South Wales. The agonising eye condition is caused by an orthoperus beetle that is found predominantly in parts of eastern Australia. The tiny beetle measures only half a millimetre in size. As quoted by national broadcaster ABC News, Wangaratta optometrist Rob Holloway said: "They are virtually impossible to see but the beetle itself has a compound in its blood supply that is a blistering agent." Holloway added, "When that gets in your eye and is released, that compound essentially makes the front surface of the eye fall off." As mentioned that the condition is rare, it is typically only found in Australia's Albury-Wodonga region, about 300 kilometres northeast of Melbourne. "Christmas Eye" is also known as "Albury-Wodonga syndrome" and "Harvester's Keratitis" as it linked to farming work. As quoted by ABC, Wodonga optometrist Kelly Gibbons said she had heard people "compare it to childbirth". Gibbons added that "these people are in abject misery". Rare eye condition caused by tiny beetle, troubles remote part of southeastern Australia

A giant cane toad, whose weight&nbsp;is equal to some newborn humans, was discovered in Australia’s Northern Queensland. Dubbed “Toadzilla” by the Australian Rangers who found it in the Conway National Park, the rough-skinned amphibian is said to be the largest of her species ever found.

Queensland’s Department of Environment and Science on Friday said that the toad, which is believed to be a female, weighs approximately 2.7 kg and is 1,289 feet (393 metres) in size.

They believe that it can be considered a new world record, considering that cane toads normally grow to around 15cm (5.9in) in size. The Guinness World Record for the largest toad in history is 2.65kg found in 1991.

Ranger Kylee Gray, who first stumbled upon the creature, detailed her first encounter saying that her vehicle stopped immediately when confronted by the cane toad.

“I reached down and grabbed the cane toad and couldn’t believe how big and heavy it was,” Gray said in a statement.

“We dubbed it Toadzilla and quickly put it into a container so we could remove it from the wild,” she said.

The ranger told Australia’s ABC news that the toad looked “almost like a football with legs”. She added that the specimen grew massively because it may have fed on a diet of insects, reptiles and small mammals.

"A cane toad that size will eat anything it can fit into its mouth," she said.

Toads have no natural predators in Australia and the poisonous species have wrought havoc on native animal populations.

Nevertheless, as is the standard practice for pests in Australia, ‘Toadzilla’ was euthanised and will be donated to the Queensland Museum.

‘Toadzilla’: Australian Rangers find 'monster' cane toad weighing 2.7kg

In the past, we have seen many incidents where the smart fitness watches of Apple have saved the lives of people but in a new incident in Australia, a trainer's Apple Watch led to a chain of events resulting in police rushing to his gym. The trainer at a Muay Thai gym in Australia accidentally made an emergency call via Siri.&nbsp;

The 34-year-old Jamie Alleyne, who is a Muay Thai and boxing trainer, accidentally activated Siri on his Apple Watch Series 7, calling emergency services while he was training a client. Unlike other instances where Apple Watch's features like fall detection and Emergency SOS have automatically called for help, this time it was Siri that heard Alleyne shouting the combinations of numbers '1-1-2; and 'good shot' in his training session.&nbsp;

Like in the US, 911 is dialled in case of an emergency, 112 is the number one dials in Australia in case of an emergency. And if this number is coupled with 'good shot' or 'nice shot', the emergency services are prompted automatically, thinking that it is a call for help or perhaps, a case of suicide.

Moments after, nearly a dozen police officers arrived at the scene expecting some kind of emergency but they found Jamie's show was perfectly fine but he was a bit confused by their sudden presence.

Jamie saw a police officer entering the gym while he was training his first client of the day. "I heard someone come in and I looked around and noticed it was a police officer. I said, ‘Hey there mate, can I help you?'," Jamie told the incident to an Australian news agency.&nbsp;

He added, "And then next minute about 15 officers including undercovers showed up, with several ambulances parked out in the front."

"All of them came in and I was like, ‘What is going on?’ One of them asked who Jamie Avery or something was and I said, 'I am Jamie Alleyne.' "

Jamie was informed that he made an emergency call despite the fact that he did not have his phone with him. This seemed impossible to him, but when he checked his dialled numbers, he discovered a call to 112 and a voicemail from NSW Ambulance stating that crews and officers had been dispatched.

Jamie was holding pads for his client, and the pressure of the button against his wrist must have activated Siri, causing an emergency call to be placed. He removed his watch because it was uncomfortable, and Siri kept appearing while he was yelling combinations '1-1-2' to his client and saying 'good shot.' This is when Jamie and the officers realised this could be the source of the emergency call.

Australian Open: Djokovic battles rowdy fans and niggle to blast into the third round

Scientists in Australia used the Artificial Intelligence monitors to track down rare bird species feared lost since the 2019-2020 summer bushfires. Eastern Bristlebird, described as 'nondescript, brown birds' are endangered bird species, found in Australia's temperate regions. In northern Australia, the previous estimates suggested that there could be as few as 40 individual eastern bristlebirds. But after Queensland's Gondwana rainforest was ravaged by bushfires, they were not seen or heard of.&nbsp;

How did the scientists find eastern bristlebird?

Researchers paired the Artificial Intelligence with audio recordings to track down the endangered eastern bristlebird, not seen since the summer of 2020. A total of five acoustic monitors in the bristlebird's northern range last year in an exercise called passive acoustic monitoring. They were placed by Queensland University of Technology researchers in partnership with Melbourne-based BirdLife Australia and Brisbane-based Healthy Land and Water.

Traditionally, that would have meant a person going into the forest and playing a recording of a call, in an effort to get a response from the elusive bird.

AI model rediscovers Australian Bristlebird feared lost since 2020 bushfires

Australian soul singer Renée Geyer, who shot to fame in the 1970s and became known for her husky vocals, has died, aged 69. In a statement, Geyer's family said the singer passed away from complications following hip surgery. According to a statement issued on behalf of Geyer's family by the Mushroom Group, while in the hospital, it was discovered that Renée also had inoperable lung cancer. "She was in no pain and died peacefully amongst family and friends," it said. The Australian soul singer rose to prominence in the 1970s and was recognised for her husky voice.

<h2>Who was Renee Geyer?&nbsp;</h2>

Renee Geyer released an album in 1973 under her own name to begin her solo career. Heading in the Right Direction, Geyer's top-charting hit was released in 1975. In 1976, the single from her third studio album, Ready to Deal, reached its highest position at number 31 on the Kent Music Report. Geyer gradually became a highly sought-after vocalist during the course of her career. She performed with artists like Sting, Chaka Khan and Joe Cocker. In an interview with ABC in 1973, she referred to the start of her music career as happening extremely swiftly.&nbsp;

<h2>What was the cause of Renee Geyer's death?&nbsp;</h2>

Confessions of a Difficult Woman, her autobiography, was published in 2000. She was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2005. Geyer was anticipating a busy year,&nbsp;according to her family. Geyer had her&nbsp;share of contentious encounters throughout her life. She was given a good behaviour bond in 2017 for verbally abusing a hotel receptionist in 2015.

<h2>Renee Geyer car accident</h2>

In the inner-Melbourne neighbourhood of Elwood, she slammed her car into the window of an optometrist's office in 2010. She was diagnosed with breast cancer a year earlier, and in 2013, she revealed to the Sydney Morning Herald that the medicine she was taking as part of her treatment at the time of the accident had an impact on her.

<h2>Australian music industry&nbsp;in shock&nbsp;</h2>

Charlie Owen, a multi-instrumentalist who frequently performed with Geyer, said on ABC Radio Melbourne that the loss was felt throughout the whole Australian music business. The support act for Geyer's final performance in late December, singer-songwriter Joe Matera, told ABC Radio Melbourne that learning of her passing came as a complete shock. Renée had several events scheduled for this year, he added, and she had genuinely urged me to continue supporting her.

<h2>Renée Geyer’s famous songs&nbsp;</h2>

Renée Geyer, an Australian jazz and soul legend shot to fame for songs like It's A Man's Man's World and Say I Love You. Paul Grabowsky, an Australian pianist and composer, referred to her as "Australia's own Queen of Soul." Researchers have found that Echidnas' mucus serves a dual purpose, one to clear the dirt from their snouts and second to keep themselves cool. Researchers from Curtin University in Western Australia used thermal imaging to capture the images of Echidnas while they were blowing bubbles of mucus from their noses.&nbsp;
Researchers found that when the mucus bubbles burst at the tip of the echidna's snout, it allows them to perform evaporation to cool down the blood circulation under their skin.&nbsp;

It is an incredibly effective cooling mechanism, environmental physiologist Christine Cooper told the BBC. "We found there's actually a 10-degree celsius difference between some parts of the body and their snout."

According to Dr Cooper, this mechanism of animals in which they use their blood for evaporation is not new but finding an animal that uses snot for doing the same job was a discovery.

And as per the&nbsp;new research,&nbsp;they have a better chance of survival than previously thought.

People have long assumed monotremes like echidnas are "just not very good physiologically", Dr Cooper says. The animals have a low lethal temperature and were thought to start "dropping dead" at about 35 degrees, she says.

"But in our study, we found them out and about - active, foraging and looking just fine - at ambient temperatures of 37.5 degrees".&nbsp;

"They are probably one of our more heat intolerance species, but we're finding that they're not as hopeless as they are supposed to be... and now we have a mechanism by how they might be managing this."

One of the key risks weighing on the Australian economy in 2023 would be natural disasters, said Treasurer Jim Chalmers, according to Bloomberg.

Inflation was fueled by flooding, which cost the Australian economy over $ 3.5 billion, or a quarter of a per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) in the fiscal year 2021–2022.

Before visiting the state of New South Wales to assess the reconstruction efforts in the wake of the disastrous floods in 2022, Chalmers released that government analysis.

He warned that the economy hadn't yet fully recovered from the previous year's floods and that the May budget would include a section on Australia's disaster readiness.

"In Australia, we're always conscious that natural disasters have the ability to throw us off course, and we expect this uncertainty to be one of the key factors weighing on our economy in 2023," Chalmers told Bloomberg.

According to the Treasury analysis, flooding contributed to a more than 16 per cent increase in fruit and vegetable costs in the year to September, and prices were predicted to rise further.

<h2>Potato scallops vs potato cakes, what's the controversy?&nbsp;</h2>

Not all Macca diners are standing with open arms over the new addition of potato scallops to the summer menu. The fast food giant Macca's announcement of its new potato scallops has disgruntled many Victorians and Tasmanians. Apparently, as per some diners, Potato Scallops are in fact known by the name Potato Cakes in two Australian states of Victoria and Tasmania.

The diners claim Macca's new potato scallops name is an insult to potato cakes from these states. One of the diners said that McDonald's has snubbed its nose in their potato cakes. “I refuse to buy them if they are going to call them this in Victoria. It’s just f***ing rude,” said one of the diners as per a local media outlet.&nbsp;

However, in Queensland, this mouth-watering dish is known by the name potato scallops only. One diner from the state said the diner loves living in Queensland but the potato scallops thing is annoying the "hell out of me." Another diner added that if one wants to get an authentic Potato Cake experience, they should head to their local fish ‘n chip shop and ask for extra crispy.

As the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to grow and evolve with time, universities across Australia are being forced to change the way they conduct exams and other assessments. This comes amid fears that students are using software to write essays and evade anti-plagiarism software. Therefore, students have been told there will be more “pen and paper” exams this year to ensure that their work is not generated by the software.&nbsp;

However,&nbsp;some industry experts in Canberra have also highlighted the need to embrace the opportunities this technology provides. This comes months after Elon Musk founded San Francisco-based, non-profit research firm OpenAI, which launched its first publicly accessible text generator on any subject in response to a query, ChatGPT.&nbsp;

Notably, AI software launched in November by the US-based company last year has already been banned in several public schools across New York over concerns of its “negative impact” on learning and potential plagiarism, reported the Guardian.&nbsp;

What prompted Australian universities to take action?

Major institutions across Australia have implemented new rules after students were caught using AI-based ChatGPT and similar technologies to write their academic papers and essays. Additionally, the universities as a part of the aforementioned rules deemed the use of such software as cheating, said a report by the Guardian.&nbsp;

Several media reports indicate that university students in Australia began using AI-based software to finish their essays which were able to evade anti-plagiarism software that most institutes use in order to check the authenticity of students’ academic writing. This prompted the Group of Eight leading universities in the country to develop new strategies to combat the use of AI starting this academic year which includes taking more pen and paper tests, supervised exams, and tests for “units with low integrity risks”.&nbsp;

Since these instances have come to light, it has sparked concerns and criticism over students using AI programs to write papers who then use submit the work as their own. “Using AI in this way undermines academic integrity and is a significant issue facing all education and training institutions, nationally and internationally,” said a spokesperson for the University of New South Wales, Sydney, as per the Guardian.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Executive, Dr Matthew Brown, of the eight leading research-intensive universities in Australia said that the institutions will revise the way assessments are conducted. Institutes like the University of Sydney have deemed the use of AI to generate content as a form of cheating in its latest academic integrity policy. According to their spokesperson, there have been a few instances of cheating but not anything noteworthy and went on to acknowledge the benefits of AI in students’ learning. Therefore, the institute said that it will be a part of the kind of tools we use at work but after it teaches the students how to use it “legitimately.”

Additionally, the Australian National University has also redesigned its assessment design which would rely more on fieldwork and lab activities as well as timed exams and include more oral presentations. Meanwhile, Flinders University, which was also the first one to implement a specific policy against this type of cheating and described maintaining academic integrity in the era of technology as an “ongoing challenge”, as per the Guardian.&nbsp;

A bar-tailed godwit broke a Guinness World Record when it flew 13,560 kilometres from Alaska to Tasmania, Australia, non-stop.

The Limosa lapponica, which&nbsp;goes by its tag number “234684,” covered the distance without any food or rest, according to the Guinness world record.

“The distance covered is equivalent to two and a half trips between London and New York, or approximately one-third of the planet’s full circumference. According to the 5G satellite tag attached to its lower back, the epic journey started on October 13, 2022, and continued for 11 days and one hour without the bird landing once,” Guinness said, ALCWweb reported.

The long-distance migrations of bar-tailed godwits have&nbsp;made headlines before as well.&nbsp;This year's&nbsp;5-month-old Godwit surpassed&nbsp;the previous record of over 350 kilometres, which was set by a different bird of the same species in 2020.

The bird is believed to have lost “half or more of its body weight during continuous day and night flight,”&nbsp;Birdlife Tasmania's Eric Woehler told Guinness World Records.

“Short-tailed shearwaters and mutton birds can land on the water and feed. If a Godwit lands on water, it’s dead. It doesn’t have the webbing on its feet, it has no way of getting off. so if it falls onto the ocean’s surface from exhaustion, or if bad weather forces it to land, that’s the end,” he continued.

According to experts, these birds usually migrate&nbsp;to New Zealand.&nbsp;But, this Godwit made a 90-degree turn and landed on the sands of Ansons Bay in eastern Tasmania, Australia.

Long-distance avian travellers are not limited to bar-tailed godwits. Over the course of a year, Arctic terns (Sterna paradisaea) can routinely travel even further distances.
