As a severe heatwave pushes temperatures in several regions including Sydney, Australian officials on Tuesday warned of a soaring risk of bushfires. Temperatures, as per Reuters, are rising to reach their highest levels in two years. Currently, Australia's most populous state of New South Wales (NSW) has 33 active fires, 12 of which are yet to be contained. Due to the fires, five public schools have been shut, and a total fire ban is in place across large parts of the state.

On Monday, many regions in NSW recorded their hottest day since January 2021. In some places, temperatures hit more than 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). On Tuesday, temperatures are forecasted to reach mid-to-high 30 degrees Celsius. Conditions are expected to ease starting Thursday.

However, the Bureau of Meteorology has warned that hot and dry conditions, accompanied by gusty winds, will elevate fire danger levels.

Australian Prime minister Anthony Albanese will be on a four-day visit to India from the 8th of march. The visit will focus on boosting overall bilateral engagement in a range of areas, including trade, investment and critical minerals. It will be his first visit to India after becoming the prime minister in may last year. The government of Australia is looking to diversify trade and foreign investment partners. Business leaders across transport, resources, finance, higher education, architecture and energy will accompany Albanese to India. Remember, India is Australia's sixth-largest trading partner. Australia is the largest supplier of iron ore to china - but is seeking to diversify its customers for critical minerals. Last month, the country blocked a Chinese investment in a rare earths miner on national interest grounds. Albanese will watch the fourth test match of the border-Gavaskar trophy with Indian Prime minister Narendra Modi in the city of Ahmedabad.

Japanese PM to visit India from March 19: Report

A report by Nikkei Asia citing a government source, on Friday (March 3) said that Japanese PM Fumio Kishida is planning to visit New Delhi. This also comes as the country also holds the Group of Seven (G7) nations’ presidency this year while India is also the chair of the Group of 20 economies in 2023.

Japan did not send its Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi to the meeting for the G20 top diplomats which was held in India last Thursday.

Reports suggest that the absence has since triggered a backlash and cast a shadow over the relations between the two countries. Nikkei Asia also claims that Kishida who might visit India on March 19 for three days will talk to Modi about issues stemming from the Russian invasion of Ukraine as this year’s G7 and G20 presidents.

Nurses and midwives in Australia have been warned against posting explicit content on OnlyFans. According to an email sent by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of New South Wales (NSW) on Wednesday (March 1), medical workers risked being a distraction for patients even if they produced explicit content in their own time and in a way that did not identify their profession, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

"If a practitioner is the content creator (on OnlyFans), then being recognised or publishing photographs in uniform, they could be reported for their conduct, deemed by the complainant as unprofessional, or as one said, a distraction for patients," the email titled “OnlyFans – Are you breaching the professional standards by subscribing to online content services?” read.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council also listed examples of OnlyFans scenarios for discussion.

"A patient recognises a nurse from her OnlyFans page and advises other patients and her colleagues of the nurse's OnlyFans content. This creates a difficult situation in the workplace. A colleague reports her to the regulator as she believes her conduct is below the expected standards of a registered nurse and that her behaviour has brought the profession into disrepute," one such example read.

"A senior manager recognises a junior from her OnlyFans page and gives her preferential rostering. He later sends her messages on her OnlyFans account asking for the favour to be returned. The nurse reports him to the regulator," another example read.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald report, nurses were alarmed by the email. “As a nurse, I personally found it very moralising and slut-shaming,” one nurse said. “I found that having an NSW statutory body attempting to regulate what nurses and midwives do in the spare time with their bodies as fairly moralistic … I think unless they are tearing off their NSW Health scrubs and talking about how they are a nurse, what damage is it doing to the profession?” she added.

A spokesperson for NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard told the publication that OnlyFans guidelines were a matter for the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which is an independent oversight body, and he would not seek to influence it.
Australia: Nurses, midwives warned against posting content on OnlyFans

Aboriginal spears from Australia, taken by Captain James Cook in 1770, are all set to be returned to the present-day descendants of the community in Sydney. After 20 years of campaigning from the indigenous people, Cambridge University's Trinity College has agreed to return the spears.

Captain Cook, on his arrival at Botany Bay south of Sydney, was confronted by two men from Gweagal clan of the Dharawal peoples. The subsequent fighting, during which muskets were fired by Cook's men, saw the Indigenous warriors retreat. Cook's crew then began searching the men's campsite where they found about 40 spears and other artefacts.

Captain Cook's landing at the Botany Bay is considered to be a foundational event of modern Australia. But since Aboriginal people inhabited the land for tens of thousands of years before Cook's arrival, such a narrative has found criticism.

Ray Ingrey, chairman of the community's Gujaga Foundation, told BBC that Gweagal people had a deep, spiritual connection with their spears.

"It's part of a dreaming story that tells us how our people came to be. So, not only that they're over 253 years old, and gives us a window into our historic past, but also toward that spiritual connection, which makes it so more important," he said.

The Aboriginal spears, taken by Cook's crew, were donated to Trinity College in 1771. Since 1914, the spears have been looked after by Cambridge University's Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

Dame Sally Davies, the master of Trinity College, told ABC News that the college was committed to "addressing the complex legacies of the British Empire"

She said returning the spears was "the right decision".

UK to return spears taken from Aboriginals of Australia in 1770

Australia's former defence minister Peter Dutton said that the nation is losing interest in purchasing British nuclear submarines and is thinking about buying the ones made in America instead.

Dutton, who was the country's defence minister until 10 months ago and led the government's decision of acquiring nuclear-powered submarines, reportedly said that he has been informed about various hurdles in purchasing a British submarine.

The problems include the UK's weak production capacity and compatibility issues of a British-designed submarine with those operated by the United States, which is Australia’s closest defence ally.

We have formally taken up the matter with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, NSW Office as well as state police authorities.” When two police officers attempted to leave the police station and reach the spot where the stabbing took place, they were confronted by Ahmed, who tried to harm them. After the attack, three shots were fired by the senior officer, two of which pierced Syed Ahmed's chest. A taser was also used on the attacker by a probationary constable. Although paramedics treated Syed at the scene and he was rushed to Westmead Hospital, however, was declared dead just after 1:30 am local time, reported the Sydney Morning Herald. At the press conference, NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said that the officers had only a second to respond and were left with no choice but to shoot the attacker.
Anthony Albanese on Saturday (February 25) became Australia's first prime minister to join the marchers at Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade. "We need to be a country that respects everyone for who they are," Albanese said as thousands of people gathered for the colourful event. Wearing a grey shirt and jeans, Albanese stood out in his simple outfit as onlookers and participants embraced colours for the 45th edition of the event, which returned to its inner-city route - its spiritual home of Oxford Street - after a halt of two years because of the pandemic. It was held at the Sydney Cricket Ground for the last two years.

The parade, Albanese said, is "a great example of what an amazing country this is". The Mardi Gras events have been incorporated in the Sydney World Pride festival this year, with offerings across arts, sport, theatre, concerts, parties, First Nations programming and a human rights conference.

Australia have been dealt yet another blow ahead of the third Test match in the ongoing Border Gavaskar trophy. Opener David Warner has been ruled out of the remainder of the series after suffering a hairline fracture during the second Test match in Delhi.

Australia have been dealt yet another blow ahead of the third Test match in the ongoing Border Gavaskar trophy. Opener David Warner has been ruled out of the remainder of the series after suffering a hairline fracture during the second Test match in Delhi. "David Warner has been ruled out of the Qantas test tour of India and will return home. Warner was struck on the elbow in the second Test in Delhi and sustained a hairline fracture," said Cricket Australia (CA) in a statement. "After further assessment, he will require a period of rehabilitation which will preclude any further involvement in the remainder of the Test series." Warner was substituted during the Delhi Test match after suffering a concussion, having taken a tricky Mohammed Siraj bouncer on the grille of the helmet. However, it was the injury, minutes before the bouncer that cut short his red-ball tour. Warner was struck on the elbow by another short of good-length delivery. While it looked fairly innocuous at the time, the subsequent x-rays showed that the southpaw had suffered a hairline fracture.
