Record-breaking floods in Australia's northwest have resulted in many communities getting isolated, Australia's weather forecaster said on Sunday (January 8). Severe weather system Ellie has created an emergency situation in Kimberly, an area in the state of Western Australia which is about the size of California.

The town of Fitzroy Crossing, a community of around 1,300 people, has been among the worst hit, with supplies having to be airlifted in due to flooded roads.

The Bureau of Meteorology said on Sunday that rain had eased as the ex-cyclone shifted eastwards to the Northern Territory, but warned that "record breaking major flooding" continued in the Kimberley.

"Many roads are impassable and many communities are now isolated," the forecaster said on its website.

State emergency authorities have warned residents in other small communities of rising water in the region, which includes the resort town of Broome, about 1,240 miles (2,000 km) north of the state capital, Perth.

The flooding is the state's worst on record, authorities have said, while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Saturday described it as "devastating" and pledged federal assistance.

Australian Defence Force aircraft were being used to assist flood-hit communities, and Chinook helicopters were en route to help relocate residents, according to authorities on Saturday.

Recently, at least a dozen countries have imposed restrictions on travellers from China because of an uptick in the number of cases in the country. The growing list now includes Australia and Canada which require a negative test result for all passengers from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao.

Meanwhile, France, on Sunday began testing passengers from China to track them for potential Covid variants, said the country’s Health Minister, Francois Braun. Additionally, they also must present a negative PCR test result, or a rapid antigen test taken 48 hours before their flight.

“This control on arrival is not a control to prevent citizens entering our territory but a more scientific control which will allow us very precisely to check different variants,” said Braun, as per AFP.

Although it first sounded like a New Zealand product, Kiwi boot polish was actually an Australian one that was started in a two-room Melbourne factory. According to Te Ara Encyclopedia, the company's founder William Ramsay gave the name Kiwi in honour of his wife Annie, who was born in New Zealand. The shoe polish quickly established itself as a staple in cities all over the world thanks to its distinctive name and Kiwi bird logo. At its height, it was sold in 183 nations selling 250 million tins yearly.

Why Kiwi will not be sold in UK?

Company's current owner SC Johnson concluded it was no longer worthwhile to continue selling its polish in the UK since the practise of British people cleaning their shoes has lost its lustre. According to a Kiwi representative, there has been a decline in Britons cleaning their shoes, which has been accompanied by an increase of casual shoes that don't need to be polished. In nations where formal shoe care "remains relevant," the company would continue to offer the items. Kiwi departure is a sign of the times, reported The New Zealand Herald quoting David James, 62, whose family's shoe repair and cleaning business started in Central London 100 years ago.

“In part, this is because people wear suits and smart shoes much less. Covid accelerated that with more working from home, but a trend was in place before then,” he was quoted as saying. “Also trainers are being worn more and more, even to work. While shoes are dying, trainers are alive. We now renovate sneakers, repair and paint them.”

History of Kiwi boot polish

After starting in 1906, Kiwi shoe polish was introduced to Europe two years later. Te Ara said that imperial soldiers made extensive use of it while at the battle. Sara Lee Corporation acquired the company in 1984, and then in 2011, it was sold to SC Johnson. Reports state that the present owners intend to concentrate on the company's assortment of other items. Here in New Zealand, big retailers including The Warehouse still carry Kiwi shoe polish.

COVID-19 has again taken up the headlines as it spreads rapidly in its origin country, China. On Sunday, Australia joined the list of countries mandating a negative COVID-19 test before arrival in recognition of the rapidly evolving situation in China. The Health Ministry said that the lack of comprehensive data from Bejing about the number of cases was a reason behind the decision.

The order will come into effect starting January 5, reported AFP news agency. Mark Butler, Australia's health minister, said that with this decision, the government wants to ensure the safety of Australian citizens, potentially at risk of the new emerging variants of COVID-19.

In Australia, more than 97 per cent of adults have had one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. However, authorities in Canberra are concerned about the lack of transparency on case numbers in China. They are also eager to know about the variant in circulation.

"This measure is in response to the significant wave of Covid-19 infections in China and the potential for emerging viral variants in that country," Butler told AFP news agency. "Fortunately, in Australia, we have readily available access to vaccines, treatments, and high underlying population immunity," he added.

After Australia, Canada has also joined the list of nations imposing compulsory negative COVID-19 tests for air passengers from China, Macao, or Hong Kong within 48 hours of travel. On Saturday, the Canadian government announced the restriction that requires all flight passengers above 2 to have a COVID-19 test report. However, the authorities will implement the temporary measure only for 30 days until further information.

Australia, Canada join list of countries imposing mandatory COVID-19 tests for China arrivals

The passengers on a Viking Cruises ship were left stranded off the South Australian coast after several ports refused the vessel to dock due to the “marine growth” in the ship’s hull. The Viking Orion which left Wellington, New Zealand on Boxing Day (December 26) has reportedly not docked since and hundreds on board were left stranded on New Year’s on the ship.

According to a report by the Australian Associated Press, the ship had been denied permission on three coasts including Christchurch, Dunedin and Hobart, before leaving for Adelaide. This comes after Australia’s National Maritime Coordination Centre confirmed that they found small amounts of “biofoul” on the ship’s hull, which includes marine microorganisms, plants, algae, or small animals.

Subsequently, the officials asked the Viking Orion’s agent to get it cleaned before entering Australian waters, said the report. Furthermore, Canberra’s fisheries department, on Sunday, said, “The vessel is required to undergo hull cleaning to remove the biofoul and prevent potentially harmful marine organisms being transported by the vessel.”

They also said that the management of biofoul is a common practice for ships arriving from international waters. “Professional divers were engaged directly by the vessel line/agent to clean the hull while at anchor outside Australian waters,” said the Australian fisheries department.

On Friday, the ship’s master, Marko Snajdar also issued an apology to the passengers, acknowledging the situation and saying that immediately after they arrive, “A member of our customer relations team will contact you with an adjusted offer of compensation.”

Meanwhile, some passengers took to Twitter to voice their complaints, "Shame on @VikingCruises for their negligence. They have now cancelled 3 of our 8 ports, including all of prime South New Zealand & Hobart," said one user on Tuesday. He added, "A dirty & biohazard ship bottom. Additionally, a representative from Viking Cruises said that the ship will sail for Melbourne on Sunday and move forward with its itinerary as planned by Monday, reported the AAP.

Hundreds of passengers stranded on cruise ship off the coast of Australia due to ‘marine growth’

Revellers in Australia are getting ready for first restriction-free New Year's Eve after two years of disruptions caused by Covid pandemic. It is expected that more than a million people will throng to Sydney's iconic harbourfront and watch the fireworks.

Sydney is one of the world's first major cities to welcome in the New Year and draws huge TV audiences around the world, with a public countdown and fireworks display over its iconic Opera House.

Covid lockdowns in 2020 and Omicron cases in 2021 had dampened the festive spirit in the last two years. This year, curbs on the celebrations have been lifted.

"This New Year's Eve we are saying Sydney is back as we kick off festivities around the world and bring in the New Year with a bang," Clover Moore, Lord Mayor of Sydney, said.

"2022 has been another year of significant challenges as we continued working to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, but tonight we put the year behind us and look with hope to 2023."

A rainbow of colour will light up Sydney Harbour, with 2,000 fireworks to be launched from the four sails of the Sydney Opera House and 7,000 fireworks from more positions on the Sydney Harbour Bridge than ever before.

The organisers told Reuters that for the first time in 12 years, fireworks will be launched from four building rooftops.

"2022 has been another year of significant challenges as we continued working to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, but tonight we put the year behind us and look with hope to 2023." A rainbow of colour will light up Sydney Harbour, with 2,000 fireworks to be launched from the four sails of the Sydney Opera House and 7,000 fireworks from more positions on the Sydney Harbour Bridge than ever before. The organisers told Reuters that for the first time in 12 years, fireworks will be launched from four building rooftops. Prior to the pandemic, over a million people would join the festivities on the ground in Sydney as a billion spectators tuned in from other parts of the world. Australia: New Year celebrations to take place without Covid curbs for first time in two years

The unprecedented benefits expected to flow both ways from the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), which comes into force today, are by now well-known in the two countries.

Both India and Australia are upbeat about the ECTA, called the Unity Agreement, as a ground-breaking measure for intensifying bilateral commerce across a range of sectors and taking economic cooperation to an altogether new level. Under the ECTA, Indian exports, especially of labour-intensive sectors, will benefit from preferential zero-duty market access in Australia. Australia would also facilitate market access and mobility for more Indian professionals.

For its part, India will provide preferential access to Australia on over 70 per cent of its tariff lines. Interestingly, because the ECTA takes effect at the year-end, some exports will get a second tariff reduction on January 1, followed by annual cuts until their duties are eliminated.

The Unity Agreement is almost certain to be followed soon by an upgraded Australia-India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that he would visit India in March with a business delegation committed to improving trade. Trade Minister Don Farrell, who may travel to New Delhi with Albanese, said that India was already “chomping at the bit” to discuss a second-round trade deal for gaining greater access to Australia’s employment market.

If ECTA reflects Australia’s commitment to diversify exports and strengthen the partnership with India, the comprehensive agreement will push for deeper market access on both sides and cover new areas such as digital trade and state procurement.

For all the mutual advantages flowing from the upgraded bilateral relationship, Australia’s drive to expand, deepen and intensify its economic and commercial partnership is not limited to India.

Australia is aggressively pursuing deals to cement deeper and stronger economic and trade ties with others, too, notably, China, the UK and the European Union. China-Australia ties are warming up after a three-year hiatus, thanks to a path-breaking pre-Christmas visit to Beijing by Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

To follow-up the breakthrough achieved by Wong, Farrell plans to visit China as early as February. He has already extended the olive branch and offered to withdraw disputes before the WTO if China shows “goodwill” by revoking its trade bans against Australia.

According to The Australian, the country’s wine exports to China crashed by nearly $1bn in 2020 amid crippling tariffs of more than 100 per cent, while an 80 per cent duty on Australian brewers’ barley smashed that $1.2bn market. “Non-tariff barriers also devastated Australian beef, lamb, lobster, cotton, timber and coal exports to China, as Beijing punished the Morrison government for leading an international push for an investigation into the origins of Covid-19”.

Now, the Albanese government is seeking to overturn the bans and move on to reviving and boosting its economic and trade partnership with China. At the same, time Australia is also pushing for free trade agreements with the EU and the UK. By current reckoning, Australia expects to have all these deals, including the comprehensive pact with India, wrapped up in the first half of 2023.

As one of the Quad, along with the US and Japan, New Delhi can be expected to closely follow the terms of trade emerging between Australia and other major economies, especially China, keeping in mind the strategic importance and priorities of its own developing partnership.

Novak Djokovic will never forget how it felt to be deported from Australia earlier this year but the Serb said his willingness to return for next month's Grand Slam at Melbourne Park shows the depth of feeling he has for the country. Djokovic was deported on the eve of the 2022 Australian Open in January for not being vaccinated against COVID-19 and received a three-year travel ban from the country.

However, the former world number one's visa ban was waived in November, opening up a path for Djokovic to target a 10th Australian Open crown and giving him a chance to tie Rafa Nadal's mark of 22 Grand Slam titles. "You can't forget those events, it's one of those things that stick with you," said Djokovic in his first news conference since returning to Australia. "It stays with you for the rest of your life. It's something I've never experienced before and hopefully never again, but it is a valuable life experience for me. But I have to move on and coming back to Australia speaks about how I feel about this country and how I feel about playing here."

"I'm hoping everything is going to be positive. Obviously, it's not something that I can predict. I'll do my best to play some good tennis and bring good emotions and good feelings to the crowd."

Djokovic said his overall experience in Australia had not been soured by what happened in January. "What happened 12 months ago was not easy to digest for some time but at the same time I had to move on. Those circumstances will not replace what I have lived in Melbourne and in Australia throughout my entire career," Djokovic said. "So I come with positive emotions and I really look forward to playing there. It's been my favourite Grand Slam, the results prove that."

Although coastal winds were expected to prevent Sydney's metropolitan centre from seeing its first 30-degree day since February 2021, most of inland New South Wales was expected to experience maximum temperatures between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius.

Australian allrounder Glenn Maxwell has revealed that he wasn't far off from his losing his leg after the freak accident ruled him out of the summer of cricket. “I probably wasn’t that far off losing my foot which was pretty scary. To be able to be out the other side (now) and starting to walk again, it’s weird you sort of have to teach yourself how to walk. Maxwell sustained the injury at his friend's birthday party in a rather innocuous accident. The dasher was pretending to chase a friend when slipped on synthetic grass and fell. However, it was Maxwell's friend falling across his leg that caused the accident. The weight load on the leg was sufficient to snap it and the cricketer was left in squirming pain. However, to not aggravate the injury, Maxwell and his friends decided not to move him. After the snap and till reaching the doctor's, Maxwell had to endure a harrowing 50-minute period. Read more: Aus vs SA, 2nd Test: Warner slams double hundred in his 100th Test, joins this player in the illustrious club Medical assessments afterward showed Maxwell shattered his fibula, chipped the tibia and ruptured all ligaments in his foot. "I shattered my fibula. So that one I think was the first snap I heard. It was snapped in half, but it also shattered through the bone," Maxwell told cricket.com.au's Unplayable Podcast previously. Despite the harrowing nature of the injury, Maxwell is ahead in his rehabilitation process. The all-rounder revealed that he had started to walk around a ''little''. “I’m starting to walk around a little bit more comfortable. Hopefully get rid of the crutches in a couple of days. Things are starting to look up." Maxwell was part of the Australian contingent at the T20 World Cup. However, the injury forced him to skip BBL, the ongoing Test series against South Africa and potentially, the Border-Gavaskar trophy, scheduled to be held in India next year. Celebrated a day after Christmas, Boxing day, despite what the name suggests has nothing to do with the sport. The holiday which began as a day to give gifts to the poor is now celebrated as a ‘shopping holiday’.

It became official in 1871 and was traditionally recognised on December 26. However, if that day falls on a Saturday, the celebration moves to the following Monday and if the date falls on a Sunday, the holiday is celebrated on the following Tuesday.

Boxing day originally began in the United Kingdom and supposedly got its name during Queen Victoria’s reign and is now celebrated in several countries across Europe as well as countries and former British colonies, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, and so on. The day is also marked by a bank holiday or a public holiday in these countries with stores offering Boxing Day sales which are often compared to the United States’ Black Friday sale.

History

There are several theories surrounding the celebration and origins of Boxing day, one of which includes it being a day off for servants where they would receive a gift from their employers and take these Christmas boxes to their families. These boxes would consist of gifts, bonuses, as well as leftovers from the meals, served on Christmas.

Therefore, in this context, the name ‘boxing day’ refers to the Christmas boxes given to those in need a day after Christmas. Meanwhile, in countries like European countries like Ireland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, Finland, and so on, December 26 is also celebrated as St. Stephen's Day, to commemorate the first Christian martyr, known for his service to the poor and was stoned to death in AD 36.

What do people do on this day?

Some people celebrate this day with family and friends while others gather for leftover meals and spend their day off relaxing. While others shop in record numbers taking advantage of low prices.

Boxing day is somewhat related to sports as on this day, Boxing day Test takes place in Australia, a cricket match played between the Australian team and any country which is on tour in the country at the time, starting from December 26. They are hosted by the country’s iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Victoria.

Additionally, there are several other sporting events held on Boxing day, which include football and rugby games in the UK and cricket matches in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

Boxing Day 2022 sales in UK and Australia

In the UK as the country faces the highest inflation in decades and a cost of living crisis, a survey by Barclaycard Payments, found that shoppers are expected to spend four per cent less this Boxing Day when compared to last year. Reportedly, a person is expected to spend at least 229 pounds ($276.2) this year which is 18 pounds ($21.7) less than in 2021.

Harshna Cayley, head of online payments at the credit card company while attributing the estimated low sales to the cost of living crisis and inflation also said, “retailers can take confidence knowing that shoppers still plan to make the most of the deals and discounts on offer.”

The survey also estimates that at least 28 per cent of people may use re-selling platforms like eBay and Facebook Marketplace to get rid of some unwanted Christmas presents. Meanwhile, research by GlobalData for Vouchercodes, estimates that spending on Boxing day will hit almost 3.8 billion pounds ($4.6 billion) which is also four per cent lesser than last year.

Notably, while the volume of items bought will be less given that the inflation in the country is more than 10 per cent shoppers will spend more per purchase.

On the other hand, reports suggest Australians are expected to spend a whopping AU$ 23.5 billion (US$ 15.78 billion) this Boxing day as they celebrate their first COVID-19 restrictions-free sale since 2020.

According to the data from the Australian Retail Association (ARA), the sales period is expected to see a 7.9 per cent increase since last year, with shoppers across major cities like Melbourne and Sydney more enthusiastic about spending than in previous years.

Meanwhile, ARA chief executive, Paul Zahra, also highlighted the change in shopping trends with less number of shoppers in-store when compared to previous years as more and more people are opting for online shopping. He also noted that consumers might witness big savings from clothing which he has attributed to an “unseasonably cool summer”.

Harshna Cayley, head of online payments at the credit card company while attributing the estimated low sales to the cost of living crisis and inflation also said, “retailers can take confidence knowing that shoppers still plan to make the most of the deals and discounts on offer.” The survey also estimates that at least 28 per cent of people may use re-selling platforms like eBay and Facebook Marketplace to get rid of some unwanted Christmas presents. Meanwhile, research by GlobalData for Vouchercodes, estimates that spending on Boxing day will hit almost 3.8 billion pounds ($4.6 billion) which is also four per cent lesser than last year. ALSO WATCH | UK inflation drops down to 10.7% in November after fuel price surge eases Notably, while the volume of items bought will be less given that the inflation in the country is more than 10 per cent shoppers will spend more per purchase. Amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Russian paramilitary forces are summoning cryptocurrency donations to buy weaponry, armour, and drones warned Australian intelligence agency Austrac. Officials at the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre referred to cryptocurrency as a ‘standard part of money laundering tool kit’.

John Moss, the agency’s head executive and head of intelligence, claimed that cryptocurrency has become mainstream, The Guardian reported. "It is no more a niche option for criminal activity," he said.

As Moss expressed his concern over the donations made by Australians to terrorist groups, he mentioned that conventional money laundering methods have shifted to digital currency. The prime reason behind the switch is to send money offshore.

Vandals in Australia have destroyed an Aboriginal artwork believed to be 30,000 years old, said local authorities, reported AP. The artwork in Koonadla Cave in the state of South Australia has been affected. As per reports, the vandals removed part of the protective fence and used their fingers to draw over the indigenous artwork.

"This is, quite frankly, shocking. These caves are some of the earliest evidence of Aboriginal occupation of that part of the country,” said Kyam Maher, the Aboriginal Affairs Minister of South Australia state. Maher was quoted by Australian Broadcasting Corp.

The artwork is considered sacred by indigenous Mirning people living on Nullarbor plain.

Maher is also Attorney-General of the South Australia state. He said that those found responsible for the vandalism could face criminal prosecution. As per law of the state, those found guilty of vandalism can face up to six months in prison or a fine of 10,000 Australian dollars.

“This isn’t some sort of accidental disturbance,” said Maher.

“This is someone who has deliberately got through fencing, barbed wire and gone in and destroyed this. This is the worst kind of vandalism that I can think of.”

Mirning elder Clem Lawrie was quoted by Adelaide Advertiser newspaper as saying that he was horrified by the destruction of the artwork.

Australia: 30,000 years old Aboriginal artwork destroyed by vandals

In what is being seen as a 'Christmas miracle', four teenagers were found alive on an island in southwestern Australia today, after drifting overnight on choppy waters for about 30 kilometres (19 miles), authorities said. They drifted the whole night on inflatable paddleboards in choppy waters off Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula after being unable to fight the strong gusts of winds. They floated with the tide and arrived at Swan Island, a military training base on the opposite side of the bay, at around 2 a.m., police said. According to reports in the Guardian, the set of friends described their escape as a “miracle.”

The two boys aged 18 and two girls aged 18 and 19 were found on Swan Island off the Bellarine Peninsula about 9 am today after they got caught in strong easterly winds.
Victoria Police said the group had set off Monday on two stand-up paddle boards from the town of Rosebud before the strong winds pushed them onto Port Philip bay, according to reports in CNN.

After battling the cold and feeling disoriented, the four found shelter in a hut but once the morning sunset in, they wandered the island and were finally found by security and then taken to hospital, said local police, according to CNN affiliate Nine News.

The police had serious concerns about the safety of the group and it was almost a miracle that they were found alive, said Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Terence Rowlands. Local residents claimed the teenagers were safe and well when they encountered them on their regular morning walk. Initially, the police had launched an emergency search overnight, patrolling the area in helicopters and boats with no success.

Jack Shi, father of one of the teens was quoted as saying that they were happy and relieved that the group was found as they had become very desperate after not knowing about their whereabouts initially.

One of the teenagers, Rong Shi, 18 describes it as an ordeal that now feels like a dream, after their much-anticipated adventure went wrong.
Reports in the Guardian say that Shi who was speaking from a hospital in Geelong explained how they were swept away by strong winds and carried across the bay.
“There was a point where we were really tired. When I closed my eyes, I felt like I couldn’t feel my hands were still attached to my nerves. It still feels like a dream to me. I can’t believe we made it – if you look back, it’s really, it’s a miracle," he told the ABC.

As they drifted further from shore and failed to attract the attention of passing boats, two of them fell in the water and they decided to stay on the boards.
“We found out that we really couldn’t turn direction so we just decided to stay on board and do nothing, to keep some energy. There was a point that it was really hard, because we could see the helicopters and boats searching for us,” Shi said.

Island security and military personnel ultimately alerted police who after the rescue said that this was like a Çhristmas miracle.'
Winds in the area were easterly and south-easterly on Monday evening and overnight, blowing at 20-30km/h, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
However at South Channel Island – a close observation point – they reached 30-40km/h. The highest gust recorded was 52km/h at about 4 am, although the observation point is particularly exposed, duty forecaster Ilana Cherny said.

The group’s belongings including phones and IDs were found on the beach by a passerby at about 8 pm on Monday, triggering the search. The effort was called off at about 4 am due to deteriorating conditions but resumed at first light.

Rosebud is a popular summer tourist destination. Its main beach faces Port Phillip bay, approximately 25km from where the bay opens out into the Bass Strait.
