An urgent health alert has been sparked by toxic spinach in Australia after severe hallucinations and sickness were reported by people who consumed it.
Medical care was given to nine people who consumed the Riviera Farms baby spinach from Costco shopping mall.

According to the health authorities, the patients also had symptoms of blurred vision, delirium and spiked heart rates. Riviera Farms said that a weed has most probably contaminated the spinach, however, it has not affected any other products.

New South Wales Health has issued a warning that the brand’s packaged spinach which has an expiry date of December 16 should not be consumed. Meanwhile, people who have consumed spinach and are suffering from unusual symptoms have been urged to seek immediate hospital care.

While speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, the state's Poisons Information Centre’s Dr Darren Roberts said, "No one has died, so we're very happy with that and we hope it remains that way, but these people are quite sick... to the point of marked hallucinations, where they are seeing things that aren't there.”

Australia's former Deputy PM Michael McCormack was taken to hospital after he drank or rather gulped an entire bowl of Kava, during a diplomatic tour of Micronesia.

McCormack was part of a bipartisan Australian parliamentary delegation that was touring the Pacific region and they were visiting Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia to commemorate the 35th anniversary of bilateral relations, where they were treated to a medley of traditional dances and traditional drinks like Sakau, a form of Kava.

He claimed he went 'çross-eyed' and slept for 14 hours thereafter, according to a report in the Guardian. His ignorance of the local drink that was served to him, made him down an entire shell of Sakau, a traditional Micronesian Kava with sedative qualities made from the root of the pepper plant. Further reports in the Guardian say that he did so because he felt he was trying to be respectful of their traditions.

What is Kava really? It is said to not be alcoholic and yet have sedative, narcotic properties that can lower anxiety and also numb pain. Sakau what the locals in Micronesia call Kava is a drug that is made from the ground roots of the plant Piper methysticum, a member of the pepper family that also includes Black Pepper.

And the way to drink Kava varies from place to place. Like, In Fiji, one is advised to drink Kava in one gulp if possible. Perhaps former minister McCormack felt it would be the same everywhere!

According to Pohnpeian folklore, Sakau is supposed to be a gift from the gods and is usually served in a coconut shell, the state symbol of Pohnpei. It is made by pounding on the root of the Kava plant and then straining it through the bark of the sea hibiscus tree.

After he was taken to a local hospital for treatment for dehydration, he learned the hard way that Sakau is a much stronger version and one should sip it instead of gulping it.

It’s known for being one of the stronger Kavas and it is generally recommended that one should sip it because there is very little water added to the roots when making the drink. The Australian Grand Prix will remain in Melbourne until at least 2037 with a new deal to be the season-opening race on at least four occasions and Saudi Arabia to kick off the 2024 campaign, the Victoria state government said on Thursday. The deal for a further two years at Albert Park follows a 10-year extension announced in June.

"Part of the deal will see Melbourne host the first race of the Formula One season for at least four years between 2023 and 2037," the government said in a statement. It added that Saudi Arabia would host the 2024 opener "out of respect for Ramadan". This year’s Australian Grand Prix drew a record crowd of around 419,000 over the course of the weekend and the government said next year, with Formula Two and Three included on the programme, was set to be even bigger. "The demand for next year’s (race) has already reached fever pitch, with event organisers eyeing record attendance numbers after tickets for the main race day sold out in only three-and-a-half hours after they went on sale," it said.

Australian Grand Prix Corporation chief executive Andrew Westacott said he will stand down after next year's race, which is scheduled from March 30-April 2.

Australian regulator e-Safety Commissioner held Microsoft Corp and Apple Inc responsible for not taking appropriate measures to regulate child exploitation content available on their platform. The Internet Safety watchdog issued a report after it used new powers to get information about the methods being used by the tech giants.

On Thursday, the e-Safety Commissioner said that after legal demands were sent to some of the largest internet firms in the world requesting information, the responses received showed that proactive screening was not done by Apple and Microsoft for child abuse material in OneDrive and iCloud, which are their storage services.

In the information received, it was confirmed that no technology was used by the two firms to detect child sexual abuse’s live-streaming on video services Microsoft Teams and Skype, which fall under the ambit of Microsoft, as well as Apple’s FaceTime, the report published by the commissioner stated.

A spokesperson from Microsoft talked about the commitment of the company to combat the proliferation of abusive material but "as threats to children's safety continue to evolve and bad actors become more sophisticated in their tactics, we continue to challenge ourselves to adapt our response".

As per the commissioner, the information confirms the lack of implementation of child protection measures by the biggest tech firms and increases public pressure on them to be more vigilant.

Information was also sought from Meta Platforms Inc, which is the owner of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, and from Snap Inc, owner of Snapchat.

In a statement, Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said that the overall responses were "alarming" and expressed her concern about "clearly inadequate and inconsistent use of widely available technology to detect child abuse material and grooming.”

Six people were killed, including two police officers, at a remote property in Australia's Queensland state, authorities said on Tuesday. The police had visited the place to investigate reports of a missing person. The police said that three people, including a woman, were shot dead after specialist officers and air support responded to a siege situation at the property. A member of the public was also killed in the incident.

Queensland police commissioner Katarina Carroll told reporters that the offenders responsible for the incident are still at large and requested the local residents to stay indoors “until further notice”. “We are an organisation in mourning tonight,” Carroll said according to The Guardian.

The incident took place when the police officers were called to a property at Wains Road in the Western Downs region in connection to a missing person case involving a man from New South Wales. The area is around 270 km away from Brisbane and Carroll said that four officers travelled to the scene.

While two police officers were killed on the spot, the third officer suffered a bullet wound that grazed past him. ABC News reported that he is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

“While we are yet to learn the full extent of what has occurred today, we do know this event is extraordinarily distressing on many levels,” Carroll said in the media briefing. “Those officers paid the ultimate sacrifice to keep our community safe. It is, sadly, a reminder of the unpredictable nature of policing and the incredible dangers our officers face while protecting our community.”

The largest telecom company in Australia, Telstra Corp Ltd, reported on Sunday that an internal error that leaked customer information affected 132,000 subscribers. According to Telstra, which has 18.8 million customer accounts, or 75 per cent of Australia's population, the information was made public owing to "a misalignment of databases," according to an internal review.

According to a business blog post published on Friday, "certain customers' names, numbers, and addresses" were listed when they shouldn't have been.

“We are removing the identified impacted customer details from the Directory Assistance service and the online version of the White Pages,” Telstra chief financial officer Michael Ackland said in a statement.

The inaccurate declaration comes after the business had described it as a minor data breach in October, attributing it to an incursion by a third party that made certain employee data from 2017 available.

Australia's foreign minister Penny Wong said on Saturday (December 10) that the country was placing sanctions on Russia and Iran because of what it said were 'egregious' human rights violations. The minister issued a statement in which she said that Australia was imposing Magnitsky-style sanctions on 13 individuals and two entities, including Iran’s Morality Police, the Basij Resistance Force, and six Iranians involved in the crackdown on protests sparked by the custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in September.

Seven Russians involved in what the foreign minister said was the attempted assassination of former opposition leader Alexei Navalny would also have human rights sanctions imposed on them, she said.

In addition to human rights sanctions, Wong said Australia was placing further targeted financial sanctions on three Iranians and one Iranian business for supplying drones to Russia for use against Ukraine.

The government of Australia declared on Thursday that it was looking for assurances from Indonesia that the man convicted of created explosives used during 2002 Bali terrorist attacks would still be under monitoring after his release from jail. Despite staunch opposition from Australia, the Islamic militant Hisyam bin Alizein, known as Umar Patek, was released from prison on Wednesday after completing roughly half of his initial 20-year sentence. The attacks led to the death of 202, out of which 88 were Australians.

Richard Marles, the deputy prime minister of Australia, said people who lost loved ones in the bombings were having a rough day.

He said to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that his administration had fough against Patek's early release and would urge the Indonesian authorities to keep him under constant observation while on parole. According to Indonesian officials, Patek, 55, was successfully rehabilitated in prison and would be help in persuading other terrorists to abstain from terrorism.

Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said it was a horrific day for the victims and their families.

The remains of a creature dating back almost 100 million years were found in Queensland, Australia and the discovery has come as great news for paleontologists. Experts have already drawn comparisons with Rosetta Stone – the three scripts which led to the decryption of ancient hieroglyphics in Egypt – and they believe that the remains can prove crucial in understanding the existence of new species of prehistoric marine creatures. According to ABC News, the fossilised remains belonged to the long-necked plesiosaur, known as an Elasmosaur – the first of its kind.

Dr Espen Knutsen, the senior curator of palaeontology at the Queensland Museum, said that a discovery like this is extremely rare and further tests will be conducted on the remains. While Elasmosaur skulls have been found, this is the first instance where it was connected to the body.

The Elasmosaur were around eight metres in length, according to existing research.

“A lot of it is neck,” Knutsen told The Guardian.

While the remains were found in good condition, the experts believed the creature was “bitten into half” by some kind of an apex predator – their guess being a Kronosaur. That will be the working theory for the scientists as they look to understand the creatures of that time period.

The skull and body were carefully preserved by the team of researchers and the initial tests conducted on them will include a study of the teeth and inspection of their flippers.

The Elasmosaur were around eight metres in length, according to existing research. “A lot of it is neck,” Knutsen told The Guardian. “At least half, if not two-thirds of the entire body length [of an Elasmosaur] is mostly neck.” Also read | Train collision during rush hour leaves 150 injured near Barcelona While the remains were found in good condition, the experts believed the creature was “bitten into half” by some kind of an apex predator – their guess being a Kronosaur. An Australian court fined Uber Technologies Inc A$21 million ($14 million) on Wednesday for threatening cancellation fees it never charged and overstating fare estimates on some rides. The penalty was less than a regulator wanted. The Australian arm of the US ride-sharing app broke consumer law by misleading customers with warnings they would be charged for cancelling some rides from 2017 to 2021 and by using an inaccurate software algorithm to estimate fares for a taxi service it offered until August 2020, the Federal Court ruled.

Uber said in a post on its website that it apologised to Australians "for the mistakes we made, and we have since proactively made changes to our platform based on the concerns raised with us".

Judge Michael Hugh O'Bryan said in a written ruling that by supplying inaccurate information on its smartphone app, Uber "would be expected to lead a proportion of consumers to alter their decision and not proceed with the cancellation and perhaps deter future cancellations", while distorting demand for its service.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), which brought the case against Uber, and the tech firm had already agreed on a fine of A$26 million, but O'Bryan told the court the evidence provided by both sides was "grossly inadequate", leaving him to speculate on the harm to consumers.

The evidence supplied suggested less than 0.5 per cent of Uber customers had gone ahead with a trip due to concern about cancellation fees. The UberTaxi algorithm overshot the fare estimate 89 per cent of the time, but less than 1 per cent of total Uber rides used that service, the judge said.

ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said in a statement that the fine "clearly signals to businesses that misleading consumers about the cost of a product or service is a serious matter which can attract substantial penalties".

The judge had made clear that the lower penalty "should not be understood as any reduction in the court's resolve to impose penalties appropriate to ... deterring contraventions of the Australian Consumer Law", Cass-Gottlieb added.

Australian court fines Uber $14 million for misleading estimated fares and cancellation fees threat

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Tuesday (December 6) announced that the US was going to boost the rotational presence of its forces in Australia. This would include bomber aircraft and fighter jets. The announcement came after annual talks between the two allies.

US sees Australia as one of the countries important to the effort against growing Chinese influence in the Indo-Pacific. Analysts say that Australia can play an important logistical role in defence of Taiwan against possible attack by China.

"What we've agreed to do is to increase rotations of air, land and sea forces, these are rotational forces obviously, to Australia," Austin told a news conference after the annual AUSMIN talks that included the two nations' foreign ministers.

Austin didn't elaborate on when exactly would there be an increase in the rotations or number of troops, ships or aircraft that will be involved in the rotation.

Austin added that the two countries also agreed to "invite Japan to integrate into our force posture initiatives in Australia."

Australia's Northern Territory is already host to frequent military collaborations with the United States. Thousands of US Marines rotate through the territory annually for training and joint exercises, started under former President Barack Obama.

Novak Djokovic will begin his bid for a 10th Australian Open title at the Adelaide International, organisers said Wednesday, after the Serbian was granted a visa to enter the country.

The world number five missed the opening Grand Slam of 2022 when he was deported over his vaccine status after a high-stakes legal battle.

Australia has since lifted the requirement for visitors to show proof of Covid vaccination, and his three-year ban was overturned by the government in November.
Djokovic said at the time it was "a relief".

"The Australian Open has been my most successful Grand Slam," he added. "I made some of the best memories there."
