Australian opener David Warner has lashed out at Cricket Australia (CA) over his lifetime captaincy ban and has urged them to change their code of conduct when it comes to bans on players from taking a leadership position. Warner was banned for a year by Cricket Australia for his role in the ball-tampering scandal which rocked the cricketing world in 2018.

While Warner and former captain Steve Smith were handed out bans for a year each, Cameron Bancroft was suspended for nine months. Warner was also banned from taking any leadership role in the Australian national team for the rest of his career, with CA imposing a lifetime ban on him.

However, calls were made to revoke the leadership ban on Warner earlier this year, with him being touted as one of the potential candidates to lead Australia in the limited-overs formats. Nine months after the Australian players' union requested CA to reconsider Warner's ban, Cricket Australia has decided to approve changes in its integrity code allowing players to appeal against long-term bans.

Warner said it was disappointing to see the approval come after a long agonising gap when the decision of a one-year ban on him took just a few days back in 2018. The senior batter said the last nine months have been 'traumatic' for him and his family.

"It's a tad disappointing that when you make a decision in 2018 it's in four days, and then this takes nine months. It's good to get in a position where it gives me an opportunity to ring up the integrity unit to have a word to them and put forward my case.," Warner told Australian media.

"It's been drawn out and it's traumatic for me and my family and everyone else who was involved in it - we don't need to relive what happened," he added.

The star opener further argued he had not committed a crime to be banned for a lifetime from taking a leadership role in the team and that he didn't need the captain's tag next to his name to be regarded as a leader in the squad.

"I'm not a criminal. You should get the right to an appeal at some stage. I understand that they put a ban in place, but banning someone for life, I think it's a bit harsh," said Warner.

"I'm a leader in the team, no matter what. You don't need to see a C (captain) or a VC (vice-captain) next to my name," he added.

The 26th edition of the multinational maritime exercise 'Malabar 22' culminated in the seas off Japan on 15th November. Hosted by the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF), this edition of Malabar also marked the 30th anniversary of the maritime exercise. The exercise began in 1992, as a bilateral exercise between the Indian Navy and the US Navy. Later, the exercise gained further prominence with the joining of navies of Australia and Japan.

For a period of five days, the sea-phase of Malabar 22 was conducted near Yokosuka, Japan and witnessed live weapon firings, surface, anti-air and anti-submarine warfare drills and tactical procedures. Another highlight of the sea phase was the conduct of 'War at Sea' exercise, which enabled all four navies to consolidate interoperability and hone tactical skills.

LIV Golf announced on Sunday a multi-year commitment to bring league events to Australia starting next April at The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide. The April 21-23 tournament at The Grange will be one of 14 events on LIV Golf League's 2023 schedule and will give fans a chance to see reigning British Open champion Cameron Smith and fellow Australians Marc Leishman and Matt Jones in action.

"This is an opportunity to grow the game with generations of Australians while connecting them with star players like Cameron Smith," LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman said in a news release. "There is massive potential for Australia to play a bigger role in this great sport, and I couldn't be more excited to showcase Adelaide for our league's debut year."

The Grange was the site of former world number one Norman's first professional victory in 1976 and, among other events, hosted the Women's Australian Open in 2019 and 2016. Consistent with the 2022 LIV Golf Invitational Series, which launched in June, LIV Golf League will feature simultaneous team and individual play, with golfers competing for an unprecedented $405 million in prize purses. The full 2023 league schedule, to be released in coming weeks, will run from February to September and will not compete with golf's four majors, international team events or heritage events.

The Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf series has lured players with the promise of guaranteed, big-money paydays and a reduced schedule, while the U.S.-based PGA Tour has suspended members who opted to join the rival circuit. Among the more high-profile players to join LIV are World Golf Hall of Fame member Phil Mickelson, twice major champion Dustin Johnson and 2020 U.S. Open winner Bryson DeChambeau.

Critics say LIV Golf, which is bankrolled by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, amounts to blatant "sportswashing" by a nation trying to improve its reputation tarnished by a history of human rights abuses.

An earthquake with magnitude 7.0 hits off the coast of Fiji, no tsunami warnings

A Majestic Princess cruise ship has docked in Sydney after hundreds of passengers on board got infected with Covid-19. The cruise ship was carrying more than 3,000 guests and at least 1,300 crew members on a 12-day cruise to New Zealand and is now set to leave Sydney for Melbourne on Saturday afternoon.

“We have been proactively preparing for and managing incidences of Covid-19 and working with NSW (New South Wales) Health,” said Carnival Australia president, Marguerite Fitzgerald, while addressing the press at Circular Quay where the ship docked on Saturday morning. She also confirmed at least 800 people onboard have tested positive for Covid amd the majority of them being passengers.

Fitzgerald also said they saw an uptick in cases halfway through the voyage and that most infected guests had mild symptoms or were asymptomatic. Furthermore, passengers who tested positive were isolated in their cabins and after disembarkment have been warned against using public transport.

She also spoke about how they had been preparing for such kind of a situation for months. “We always knew that there was a risk that at some point we were going to see a surge in community transmission and that we would then see that on the ship,” said Carnival Australia president.

“All guests disembarking have undertaken a rapid antigen test in the past 24 hours” said Fitzgerald, the result of which determined how they will exit the ship. She added, “All guests will be masked, regardless of COVID status.” Passengers who had tested negative were allowed to leave the ship first, while those who tested positive exited deck-by-deck through a separate door, reported the local media.

Hours after Australian Federal Police (AFP) blamed Russian hackers for the Medibank hack, the Russian embassy on Friday evening released a statement, criticising AFP and its Commissioner Reece Kershaw's decision to openly blame Moscow.

"For some reason, this announcement was made before the AFP even contacted the Russian side through the existing professional channels of communication," read the statement.

"We encourage the AFP to duly get in touch with the respective Russian law enforcement agencies."

The Russian embassy added that fighting cybercrime that affects people's lives and damages businesses, "demands a cooperative, non-politicised and responsible approach from all members of the world community."

As reported by WION, on Friday, AFP chief Kershaw blamed Russia after another tranche of data from the medical insurer firm related to abortion was leaked online.

“The AFP is undertaking covert measures and working around the clock with our domestic agencies and our international networks including Interpol. This is important, because we believe those responsible for the breach are in Russia,”

AFP chief Kershaw said that they will be holding talks with the Russian law effacement to nab the cyber criminals.

“Our intelligence points to a group of loosely affiliated cybercriminals who are likely responsible for past significant breaches in countries across the world. These cybercriminals are operating like a business with affiliates and associates who are supporting the business. We also believe some affiliates may be in other countries,” he said.

What has happened at Medibank?

Medibank, the largest health insurance company in Australia covering one-sixth of its citizens had its data breached by hackers. Since then, the medical and personal information of its customers has been released on dark web with hackers demanding ransom for the data.

Among the customers of Medibank is Prime Minister Anthony Albanese who expressed concern that his personal information, among those leaked, might also be available to the public.

"I’m disgusted by the Medibank attack. And I know all Australians are rightly distressed by the release of deeply personal information. We need to stand together at a time like this," tweeted Albanese.

Australia: Three telecom firms have been ordered by the court to pay a collective of $22 million as it is allegedly making misleading claims about the speed of the internet.

World Business Watch: Australian telecom firms fined $22.1 mn

Three Australian telecom companies will have to shell out millions in fines as a court has held them liable for misleading claims about some NBN internet plans. The companies will have to pay a collective A$33.5 million ($22.08 million) in penalties.

The Australian Federal Court has ordered Telstra to pay A$15 million, a unit of TPG Telecom to cough up A$5 million, and imposed a fine of A$13.5 million on Optus, a unit of Singapore Telecommunications, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) said.

ACCC said that the false or misleading statements were made for at least 12 months in 2019. The claims possibly continued until 2020. These claims were related to their 50 Megabits per second (Mbps) or 100 Mbps fibre to the node plans.

The regulator said that all three telcos have admitted in court to having made false or misleading statements. The ACCC said that nearly 120,000 customers were affected due to these claims.

Telstra said in a statement that between April 2019 and April 2020 it failed to verify the maximum attainable speed of the NBN services ordered by around 48,000 customers either completely or within a reasonable period after connection.

NBN, or National Broadband Network, is a government-run broadband network.

"We've gone through an extensive remediation and refund process. We've also taken a number of steps to ensure we better meet our regulatory obligations," Telstra added.

Optus and TPG Telecom spokespersons, in separate emailed responses to Reuters, said the companies have made changes to their systems and processes to address the concerns raised by the proceedings.

The trend of climate activists vandalising prized world art pieces refuses to die down. Reportedly, climate protesters glued themselves to an Andy Warhol painting at the National Art Gallery of Australia in the capital city of Canberra on Wednesday. The protesters, two females, belonged to a group called 'Stop Fossil Fuel Subsidies Australia' and targetted Warhol's famous "Campbell's Soup I" on display at the gallery. They used an adhesive to stick themselves to the painting and burst into a monologue about the symbolism of their act. “Andy Warhol depicted consumerism gone mad in this iconic series,” said one of the protesters before adding, “And now we have capitalism gone mad. Personal data of millions of customers of Australia’s largest health insurer Medibank was leaked online on Wednesday, a month after it was stolen by hackers.

The data of around 9.7 million Medibank customers was posted online after the insurer refused to pay a ransom.

Among the customers of Medibank is Prime Minister Anthony Albanese who expressed concern that his personal information, among those leaked, might also be available to the public.

"This is really tough for people," he said on Wednesday, according to BBC.

Data relating to medical procedure history, along with names, addresses, birthdates and government ID numbers, were said to have been leaked online.

Around midnight, a ransomware group, whose identity is unknown, posted on its darknet blog that “data will be published in 24 hours”.

“P.S. I recommend to sell medibank stocks.” More data will be posted soon, the blogpost says.

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has slammed Aaron Finch & Co. for their defensive approach in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 after their exit from the tournament. Australia crashed out of the tournament after managing seven points from five matches as they were pipped by England on net run rate.

Australia got off to a disastrous start in the tournament with a shocking 89-run defeat against New Zealand in their opening game. The huge loss derailed their campaign as they failed to make it to the knockout stages after managing only two wins in their next four games, with one of them getting washed out due to rain.

Speaking on Big Sports Breakfast, a radio show, Clarke said Australia's approach in the tournament was very 'un-Australian' as Finch & Co. played defensive cricket despite fielding an aggressive squad.

"I think Australians in general, on the biggest stage under the most amount of pressure, always put in on the line and have a crack. We’re not scared to lose. Yet we picked an aggressive 11 in this World Cup squad yet played so defensively. Very un-Australian," said Clarke, who led Australia to an ODI World Cup triumph in 2015.

Being the hosts of the tournament and masters of the home conditions, Australia were one of the favourites for the title heading into the tournament. However, the defending champions' loss against New Zealand ended up proving too costly in the race for the semi-finals.

While they lost by a nig margin against the Kiwis, Australia had to share points with England after the clash between the two sides was called off due to rain. Clarke said it was frustrating to see Australia take their games deeper against the likes of Ireland and Afghanistan.

"The frustrating thing for me is – I think they missed a trick against Ireland and then against Afghanistan, I don’t know what I was watching. It felt like they were doing everything they could just to beat Afghanistan," said the former Aussie skipper.

England qualified on the basis of a better net run rate from Group 1 after beating Afghanistan comprehensively by five wickets in their final Super 12 clash. Jos Buttler-led side will now face India in the second semi-final while New Zealand will be up against Pakistan in the first semi-final.

A former US military pilot is awaiting a court hearing and possible extradition after being caught by the authorities in Australia for having the same address as a Chinese hacker. Reportedly, Daniel Edmund Duggan, 54, was arrested by Australian Federal Police last month on a request from the US. According to the authorities, Duggan listed the same Beijing address as a Chinese businessman jailed in the US for conspiring to hack US defence contractors' computers. Australian records reveal that Duggan moved to Beijing from New South Wales in 2014 and listed a flat in upmarket Chaoyang District as his place of address. However, the same address was found to be belonging to a Chinese national named Su Bin. WATCH | Pilots hired to help China understand how western planes operate × According to US court records, Su was arrested in Canada in 2014 and jailed in the US two years later in connection to a case involving the theft of US military aircraft designs. Su had pleaded guilty in the case. Su's aviation company Nuodian Technology is on the UN Entity List which is a trade blacklist of companies or individuals that pose threat to US national security. Duggan's arrest took place the same day when it was revealed that former British and Australian pilots were being poached by the Chinese military to train its troops. At the time, Australia's Defence Minister Richard Marles said he ordered the department to investigate claims that ex-Australian military pilots were recruited by the flight school, based in South Africa to work in China. Read more: After UK, Australia to also investigate reports that China hired its ex-military pilots "I would be deeply shocked and disturbed to hear that there were personnel who were being lured by a pay check from a foreign state above serving their own country. I have asked the department to investigate these claims and come back to my office with clear advice on this matter," said Marles. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

The Australian watchdog has dragged the local unit of American tech company Dell to local court over allegations that it misled people about the price of the monitors that consumers could add on.

From August 2019 to December 16, 2021, Dell Australia duped people on the potential savings a customer got when an additional monitor was purchased with a computer, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said.

“The ACCC alleges the monitors were not sold for the ‘strikethrough’ price for most of the relevant time and, in some cases, the add-on price shown was more expensive than if the monitor was bought on a stand-alone basis,” ACCC Commissioner Liza Carver said, according to Reuters news agency.

The ACCC said it is seeking penalties, declarations, consumer redress, costs, and other orders.

In an email statement, Dell clarified that an error in the price process led to incorrect information being displayed on its website about the prices of certain monitors, adding that about 2,100 customers were affected by it.

Cyberattacks against Australia jumped four-fold compared to last year, with over half of the attacks being targeted towards individuals for fraud and theft, a government report has said. According to the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), 76,000 cybercrime complaints were registered last financial year, of which 95 reports were related to attacks on critical infrastructure.

The government agency further noted that there was a 13 per cent rise in cybercrime complaints compared to last year.

It said that the attacks have been largely carried out by criminals and state-sponsored groups mainly emanating from China’s Ministry of State Security, Iran and Russian states-financed groups.

“It’s not just about the frauds or the texts that you or I might receive, but real issues around the security of our country going forward,” cybersecurity minister Clare O’Neil told state-owned Australian Broadcasting Company on Friday, reports Reuters news agency.

Australia's Jetstar Airways faced a lot of criticism after a woman with disability decided to crawl off the plane after the in-flight crew rejected her request for a wheelchair. Natalie Curtis, who was travelling from Townsville in Queensland to Bangkok, told Channel 7 that she was asked to pay for the wheelchair service while departing the flight and she ended up crawling out of the plane.

“When we arrived (staff) were asking us to actually pay and I didn’t really comprehend it, and I’m like ‘no I’m not paying to be able to get off this plane’,” she told the news outlet. “They all just sat around for a while and the option that was left was for me to get on the floor and crawl.”
