Australian football team needed a win versus the No. 10 ranked Denmark to progress ahead into the Round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Prior to the game, Australia were at the second spot in their group and had fate in their own hands knowing that a win will be enough for them to progress ahead in the mega event. A defeat would've ended their run and a draw would've put them in a difficult spot and pushed to a likely early exit.

Nonetheless, the Aussies rode on Mathew Leckie as he scored the only goal of the match to help his side to a 1-0 win over Denmark and take them into the Round of 16 in a World Cup for only the second time. In 2006 edition, Australia had reached the last 16 for the first time. After the game got over, Aussie fans went berserk and celebrated wildly. The game ended at 4 am local time in Australia, however, the fans gathered in huge numbers and celebrated the side's victory in the streets in Melbourne.
In what may become a global landmark and inspire people in other robust democracies to seek reversal of unjust impositions by governments during the coronavirus pandemic, the Australian state of New South Wales has revoked 33,000 Covid fines totaling more than AUS$ 30 million.

Those who have already paid the fines will be refunded the amount.

NSW was forced to cancel the Covid-era fines after an adverse court ruling in a test case by Redfern Legal Centre (RLC), which argued that police did not provide enough details about the offence, which is a breach of the Fines Act.

Yet, the government, instead of resisting the case for cancellation of Covid-19 fines, accepted the principle of the test case in two other cases pending before the court. And in what may even be commendable, extended the benefit of the principle to withdraw a total of 33,121 fines, out of the total 62,138 Covid-19 related fines issued. NSW was compelled to concede that the AUS$30m collected in fines for so-called “breaches” of Covid-era public health orders were “too vague”.

The case filed in public interest by RLC, the judiciary’s pathbreaking order and the executive’s response and prompt action are, in these times, exemplary institutional conduct. Neither the judiciary nor the executive saw it as a prestige issue. The government could have let the other two cases go on and waited for similar orders; and, worse, it could have resisted extending the benefit of the spirit and underlying principle of the court’s order to 33,000 others. That fact that it did not do so, for whatever reason, is worthy of emulation when people, especially those in financial distress, are involved.

It remains to be seen whether NSW scraps the fines on 29,000 others, too; or it chooses to force another legal contest over dubious fines for breach of vague “pandemic restrictions”, which may not hold up in court.

It would be interesting to see the aftermath: such as, whether the principle of undoing the injustice of dubious fines is taken up in other Australian states; or the federal government headed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese steps in to ensure country-wide relief in this matter.

The court ruling and the NSW reversal of the fines come at a time when the Australian parliament made history with its censure of former Prime Minister Scott Morrison for taking advantage of Covid conditions to secretly grab several ministerial posts between March 2020 and May 2021.

If the parliamentary censure was a first for a former PM, so was his conduct. As Prime Minister Albanese succinctly put it: “This is the sort of tin-pot activity we would ridicule if it was in a non-democratic country. Scott Morrison was running a shadow government”.

The censure was preceded by an enquiry into what Albanese had described as “extraordinary” and “unprecedented trashing of our democracy”.

Parliament is expected to follow up the censure by changing the law to ensure that ministerial appointments are made public.

New South Wales, Australia's largest state is preparing to withdraw or refund tens of thousands of Covid fines issued during the pandemic. The step is being taken after government lawyers conceded in court that some fines were invalid. The test case was brought by a legal advocacy group.

New South Wales, Australia's largest state is preparing to withdraw or refund tens of thousands of Covid fines issued during the pandemic. The step is being taken after government lawyers conceded in court that some fines were invalid. The test case was brought by a legal advocacy group. During the pandemic, Australian states and territories imposed strict restrictions that included limits on travel and movement outside residents' homes. Police in New South Wales were empowered to issue fines of upto USD 670 to people who breached rules. Redfern Legal Centre, a free legal service, launched a test case in July on behalf of three plaintiffs arguing their fines of between A$1,000 to A$3,000, were invalid because the penalty notices did not sufficiently describe the offense.
“I got an email through my website as an inquiry,” Dixon told ABC radio. “And at first glance, thought it was a phishing scam because I had absolutely no idea that the poppies that I was growing were questionable or illegal and restricted.”

Officers from the department of natural resources and environment took a sample of the flowers to the University of Tasmania for testing and determined they were of prohibited species Papaver somniferum, known as alkaloid or opium poppies, and Papaver bracteatum, known as Persian or Iranian poppies.

Dixon said she took “full responsibility” for not spotting the flowers earlier but said the seeds were widely available.

“I was just really shocked because I’ve seen these, I bought these particular seeds from a mainland seed supplier, and I’ve definitely seen these varieties available for local sale, I’ve seen them in people’s cottage gardens here,” she further told the ABC radio.

Later on her Instagram page, Dixon said she had bought seeds containing what she thought was Poppy Pink Frills or Papaver paeoniflorum, and a coral oriental poppy, Papaver oriental.

Australia: Authorities destroy flower grower’s ‘really beautiful poppies’, planted by ‘mistake’

Australia beat Croatia 2-1 on Friday in Malaga, Spain to reach the Davis Cup finals for the first time in 19 years and will next face either Canada or Italy. Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson clinched the winning point for Australia with a 6-7(3) 7-5 6-4 win over Mate Pavic and Nikola Mektic in a clash that was nearly a rematch of the Wimbledon doubles final until a late player switch. Moments before the match Australia captain Lleyton Hewitt put Thompson in for Matthew Ebden, who along with Purcell captured the Wimbledon doubles title when they beat defending champions Pavic and Mektic in the All-England Club final.

The first set was a tightly-contested affair until the Czech duo stepped it up and rolled through the tiebreaker. But Purcell and Thompson never wavered and broke for a 6-5 lead in the second frame and held serve to force a decisive third set. Purcell and Thompson broke again for a 4-3 lead and that was all the cushion they needed as they took care of business on their next two service games to put Australia into their first final since 2003 -- when they won their 28th title.

An Indian man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a young woman who was discovered dead on a beach in tropical northern Australia four years ago. Toyah Cordingley, 24, was attacked in what has been described as a "frenzied and brutal and sadistic" manner in October 2018.

Queensland police commissioner Katarina Carroll said, "It was never a question of if, but when this day would come. I am very confident we have a strong case to put before the courts."

When Singh, a nurse, left Australia hours after Toyah's death, he took his three children, wife, with him. He was seen on camera at Sydney's main airport.

Indian man on the run arrested for murder of Australian woman on beach four years ago

The Australian police have identified the serial rapist known as “Bondi Beast” after nearly 40 years since his first attack.

Keith Simms, who died in February due to kidney failure aged 66, was named as the criminal who had terrorised Sydney suburbs for over three decades.

According to the police, Simms had targeted 31 women, aged between 14 and 55, from 1985 to 2001 by entering their homes or while they were out jogging or walking. He did so even while living an otherwise normal family life.

In 2005, New South Wales Police formed a Strike Force Doreen in order to investigate the five sexual assaults which took place in the city's eastern suburbs.

The police were told by the victims that he would subdue them by using knives or threats and kept his face hidden during the attacks.

Initially the detectives believed there were several men behind these attacks. But after analysing evidence from the 31 sexual assaults and attempted sexual assaults, they concluded it was just one man behind all these incidents.

Owing to the advancement in technology, the investigators were able to link all the incidents to Simms using his DNA.

The link was first found in the early 2000s when women gave similar descriptions of their assailants.

Some of the aspects include 160 to 180 cm in height, dark complexion, brown eyes, wavy hair, and a wide nose. He also wore casual clothes, like tracksuits or hoodies and kept his face covered.

Over the years, he was also known as the “Centennial Park rapist”, “Tracksuit rapist”, the Bondi rapist and the “Bondi Beast” by the media.

The DNA evidence was directly linked to 12 incidents while his modus operandi matched 19 other incidents.

According to reports, his first attack was committed in March 1985 and his last assault on record was in October 2001.

According to reports, his first attack was committed in March 1985 and his last assault on record was in October 2001. In 2019, police had a breakthrough in the case when they found a familial DNA match in their database and narrowed it down to 324 people which eventually led them to Simms.
