<p>A woman from Assam's Guwahati allegedly killed her husband and mother-in-law and stored the body parts in a freezer, and later disposed them in a river, India-based news agencies reported on Monday (February 20) citing sources. The preliminary details of the case are similar to the horrific cases of Nikki Yadav's alleged murder by her boyfriend and last year's Aaftab Poonawalla and Shraddha Walkar case. Police have not issued an official statement on the incident.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reports mentioned that the incident took place in Guwahati's Noonmati area, around seven months ago. However, it came to light only on Monday after the accused reportedly confessed to the crime.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A senior police officer said that the accused, identified as Bandana Kalita, has confessed that she killed her husband Amarjyoti Dey and mother-in-law Shankari Dey on August 17, 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Guwahati police commissioner Diganta Barah said, "Investigation into the case started after Bandana Kalita filed a missing persons report in Noonmati police station on August 29, that her husband and mother-in-law were missing. Following this, police took all required steps, but failed to secure any leads on both persons."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Media reports mentioned Kalita (32) was a gym instructor and her mother-in-law Shankari Dey was a retired government employee. Her husband was unemployed. The motive behind the crime is not known yet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reports also mentioned that two of her friends, Arup Deka and Dhanjit Deka, had helped her. They have been arrested for allegedly being involved in the murder and being interrogated by police officers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by news agencies, the officer said, "Following the murders, Kalita stored the victims' body parts in a refrigerator and left the house."</p>

<p>"She returned four days later, on August 21, and disposed of the body pieces into Meghalaya's Dawki River, which is at a distance of at least 200 km from Guwahati," the official added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kalita's neighbours confirmed that they saw her burning furniture on the terrace of her house, said the police sources.&nbsp;</p>

The police launched a massive operation on February 4 against groups involved in child marriages in an effort to rescue girls and arrest those responsible.&nbsp;Irrespective of the widespread public outcry, Assam's chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, had&nbsp;said&nbsp;that the state would&nbsp;continue its crackdown on child marriage despite the fact that more than 2000 people had already been&nbsp;detained in connection with the same.</p>

<p>According to an official announcement from the Assam government, more than 2,250 people had&nbsp;been detained in the state in&nbsp;connection with the campaign against child marriage. Based on 4,074 FIRs filed, 2,258 people were detained in total.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>The backlash of the arrests&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>As per local media reports, a young woman in Assam died by&nbsp;suicide amid the campaign against child marriage because she was frightened her father would be detained for getting her married when she was still a minor.</p>

<p>The woman, who&nbsp;died by suicide had two children and a husband who had passed away due to Covid. In addition, a Golakganj woman entered a police station and said she would commit suicide if her husband, who was detained on suspicion of child marriage, was not released.</p>

<p>Despite the state government's plans to outlaw child marriage and save young women who had been forcibly married off, hundreds of women surrounded police stations in an act of protest against the arrests made by the administration.</p>

<p>Owaisi said in a press conference, “For the past six years, there has been a BJP Government in Assam. What have you been doing during the past six years? This is your failure for the past six years. You are sending them to jails. Now, who will take care of those girls? CM (Himanta Biswa Sarma) will? It is a failure of the state and on top of that you are pushing them into misery.”</p>

<h2><strong>What was the Gauhati&nbsp;High Court's decision?</strong></h2>

<p>In conjunction with the state-led drive against child marriages, the Gauhati High Court has granted anticipatory bail&nbsp;to nine individuals who were&nbsp;being questioned by Assam Police. In reference to how the crackdown has wreaked "havoc in the private lives of people," the High Court stated that there was&nbsp;no need to question those who had&nbsp;been detained.</p>

<p>The Assam High Court also condemned the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, 2012 (POCSO), and rape accusations against those who were found guilty of child marriage. The Assam administration made assertions and charges that the High Court described as&nbsp;"absolutely weird."</p>

<p>"This (arrest) is&nbsp;causing havoc&nbsp;in the private life of people. There are children, there are family members, there are old people. This may not be a good idea to go for (arrests), obviously it is a bad idea," he observed on Tuesday (February 14).</p>

Merely because POCSO is added, does it mean the judges will not see what is there?"</p>

<p>"These are not matters of custodial interrogation. You (state) proceed as per law, we have nothing to say. If you find somebody guilty, file a charge sheet. Let him or her face trial and if they are convicted, they are convicted," the judge said.</p>

<p>"This (arrest) is&nbsp;causing havoc&nbsp;in the private life of people. There are children, there are family members, there are old people. This may not be a good idea to go for (arrests), obviously it is a bad idea," he observed on Tuesday (February 14).&nbsp;</p>

<p>In Assam, 4,225 incidents of child marriage have been registered as of February 14; 3,031 persons have been detained in total and 4,004 FIRs were filed when the crackdown began on February 3.</p>

<p>In an interview with Sportstar after end of Day 1's play, Shaw spoke at length about the challenges of managing expectations and handling criticism. He said, "I have realised that whenever you score runs, you are on top of the world. But when you don't score then people will come after you. Expectations kaafi rehte hai [there are quite a lot of expectations] when you score regularly, so when you suddenly get out early in three or four innings, people start thinking 'yaar, yeh hai woh hai [people start questioning you].' Only you know whether you are following the process, or whether you are being disciplined more than before, are you sleeping on time, eating well before a game. All those things matter. I am just trying to follow those things and I am trying to spend time alone as much as possible. I cut out the outside noise - be it on social media or in other platforms."</p>

<p>Shaw further asserted, "I try to avoid those things or at times, just ask my manager to handle social-media activities. I have brand commitments, and that's why it is not possible to stay away from social media, and thus, you eventually end up seeing what's being written or spoken about. But I am still trying to cut out the noise as much as possible. People are talking about you and then will continue doing the same even after 10 years, so you should not think too much about it, because if you start reading too much between the lines, you will be affecting yourself."</p>

<p>With some a record-breaking knock, Shaw has raised his stocks and will certainly be under the radar of the BCCI selectors when they meet to announce the white-ball squads for the upcoming home series versus New Zealand. Despite his heroics in the domestic circuit, he has been overlooked for national duties. <p>The maiden river voyage will commence on January 10, 2023, from the holy city of Varanasi in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and will culminate in Dibrugarh, Assam, a northeastern state on March 1.</p>

<p>The minister informed that the cruise ship will also be passing through Bangladesh, covering 1,100 kilometres,&nbsp;en route Assam, bringing both nations closer in the process.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The highlights of the cruise trip will include witnessing the mesmerising 'Ganga Aarti', traversing through the Sundarban (the world's largest mangrove forest) and&nbsp;visiting Mayong, the cradle of 'black magic' in India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ship will pass through three major waterways viz. the Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system, the&nbsp;Indo-Bangla Protocol Route (Kolkata-Dhubri) and&nbsp;National Waterway 2 over Brahmaputra.</p>

<p>Sonowal added that in addition to promoting passenger traffic on rivers,"the development of inland waterway systems would expedite trade and cargo services and attract tourists along its route.”</p>

Zubeen Garg, popular Assamese singer and actor, hospitalised in Dibrugarh

<p>Assamese actor Kishor Das, on July 3, breathed his last after battling cancer for over a year. He was 31. A popular face in Assam, Das has been a part of several music videos and has appeared in more than 300 videos. He passed away in a Chennai hospital where he had been undergoing treatment since March this year. As per media reports, Kishor&nbsp;was also infected with Covid disease at the time of his death. The actor hailed from Mirza in Assam’s Kamrup district, a state in northeast India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>His final rites will take place on Saturday evening in Chennai, as because of the Covid protocols, his mortal remains couldn’t be transported to his native town.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Das gained recognition over the years for his performances in successful Assamese television shows, including ‘Bidhata’, ‘Bandhun’, and ‘Nedekha Fagun’ that were telecasted on local entertainment networks. Das mostly worked in the Assamese entertainment industry.</p>

<p>Hemanga Thakuria, a local MLA from Assam’s Palashbari constituency, speaking to the media, said: "Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma communicated with the Tamil Nadu government to make arrangements to send the actor’s body to Assam but it could not happen owing to the Covid-19 restrictions."</p>

<p>Several politicians from Assam took to Twitter to mourn the actor’s death and send condolences to his family.</p>

He passed away in a Chennai hospital where he had been undergoing treatment since March this year. As per media reports, Kishor was also infected with Covid disease at the time of his death. The actor hailed from Mirza in Assam’s Kamrup district, a state in northeast India. His final rites will take place on Saturday evening in Chennai, as because of the Covid protocols, his mortal remains couldn’t be transported to his native town. Das gained recognition over the years for his performances in successful Assamese television shows, including ‘Bidhata’, ‘Bandhun’, and ‘Nedekha Fagun’ that were telecasted on local entertainment networks. Das mostly worked in the Assamese entertainment industry. Hemanga Thakuria, a local MLA from Assam’s Palashbari constituency, speaking to the media, said: "Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma communicated with the Tamil Nadu government to make arrangements to send the actor’s body to Assam but it could not happen owing to the Covid-19 restrictions." On June 22 morning, Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde, along with 33 party MLAs and seven independent MLAs who were staying at the Le Meridien hotel in Surat, flew from Surat International Airport to Guwahati, Assam. This follows allegations of cross-voting in Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) elections, in which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won five seats, handing the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance government led by Shiv Sena a huge setback.</p>

<p>The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Shiv Sena each won two seats, while Congress won one of the ten seats in the Legislative Council that were up for election on Monday.</p>

<p>Shinde, along with a few other Shiv Sena MLAs, stayed at the Le Meridien hotel in Surat after the MLC elections.</p>

<p>In Surat, a Shiv Sena group led by Milind Narvekar and Ravindra Phatak, close aides to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, met with Shinde and other party MPs.</p>

<p>Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut acknowledged on Tuesday that some Shiv Sena MLAs and Eknath Shinde were currently "not approachable," despite allegations that efforts were being undertaken to topple the MVA government. Shiv Sena MLAs were in Surat, he claimed, and they were not permitted to leave.</p>

<p>In the midst of the controversy, Shinde tweeted a veiled jab at the Shiv Sena for teaming up with the Congress and the NCP to establish the state government, "We are Balasaheb's staunch Shiv Sainiks ... Balasaheb has taught us Hindutva. We have never and will never cheat for power regarding Balasaheb's thoughts and Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Saheb's teachings." Shinde has also dropped "Shiv Sena" from his Twitter bio.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the Shiv Sena split from the BJP in 2014, he was appointed Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Shinde was nominated to the MVA government's cabinet as a minister.</p>

<p>But he has been feeling marginalised since the MVA government was formed, according to sources. Shrikant Shinde, his son, is a Lok Sabha member from Kalyan. In the midst of this, Shiv Sena representatives met with Maharashtra Assembly Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal and presented him a letter requesting that Eknath Shinde be removed from his position as Shiv Sena Legislative Party Leader and replaced by Ajay Chaudhary.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Maharashtra BJP head Chandrakant Patil said that the state government is now "technically" in "minority" due to the departure of Eknath Shinde and other Shiv Sena MLAs.</p>

<p>He stated that the BJP was currently in a "wait and watch" mode, and that neither the BJP nor Shinde had made any proposals on government formation.</p>

<p>"BJP got support from independents and small political parties for Rajya Sabha and MLC elections. As per our information, Eknath Shinde and 35 MLAs have gone. This means technically state government is in minority but practically it will take some time for the government to be in minority," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's too early to say anything, we are currently waiting and keeping an eye on the situation. So far, there has not been any proposal regarding government formation neither from the BJP nor from Eknath Shinde but anything can happen in politics at any time," the BJP leader added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The BJP and the Shiv Sena used to be allies until 2019, when they split over the question of the chief ministerial office after contesting the Maharashtra Assembly elections jointly. Following days of political gridlock and high-octane drama, the Shiv Sena, along with the Congress and the NCP, created the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance government, led by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.</p>

<p>India's northeastern state of Assam is suffering from heavy flooding. All major rivers are in spate, affecting over 5&nbsp;million people and claiming 11 more lives. Bank erosion caused by the river Brahmaputra is one of the major reasons why Assam gets flooded every year. Due to erosion, the width of the river increases and it changes its course. Meanwhile, a video is becoming viral of a newborn baby being moved safely in a basket, which people said reminded them of Lord Krishna. The government and national disaster agencies are constantly giving Asaam floods updates and requesting people to stay indoors. Barpeta is the worst-hit district with over 1.2 million people being affected due to floods in the area. This was followed by Darrang with over 400,000 people hit by the deluge and Nagaon with over 440,000 people affected. Authorities are running 1,425 relief camps and distribution centres in over 25 districts. Also, 3.4 million animals remain affected in inundated areas, while 5,232 have been washed away by floods.</p>

<strong>Death Toll rises to 89&nbsp;and over 5&nbsp;Million Affected people&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Assam reported seven more deaths, which include three children on Tuesday. In the past 24 hours, 11 people have died, including 2 children, increasing the death toll to 89. Besides, seven more people went missing across five districts, the Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in its report. Rescue operations are underway. Over 1 lakh people are displaced.&nbsp;Three new fatalities were recorded in Darrang, two in Nagaon -- police personnel who got washed away while trying to rescue marooned people, and one each in Cachar, Dibrugarh, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup and Lakhimpur. Seven people were reported missing, with two each in Udalguri and Kamrup and one each in Cachar, Darrang and Lakhimpur.</p>

Army led rescue operations are also going on in Assam. An army team helped evacuate a cancer patient in her 40s, stuck at her flooded home in Kamrup district’s Palepara vilage for three days, and sent her to an advanced healthcare centre in Guwahati. Three people in their 90s were also evacuated to safety from Kadamtola and Holapara village in Baksa district. They have rescued over a 100 people.&nbsp;<br />
Over 10,000 people have been rendered homeless in Tripura due to the flooding caused by incessant rainfall since Friday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also called up Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to enquire about the state of affairs, officials said. However, the situation has deteriorated further on Monday with the death toll rising. In all, 810 relief camps and 615 relief distribution centres have been opened in all the affected areas. According to a report by ASDMA, a total of 2,31,819 people are staying in the relief camps while over 1,13,485 hectares of crops have been damaged. The water in five rivers -- Brahmaputra, Kopili, Beki, Pagladiya, Puthimari -- is flowing above the danger level at several places.</p>

Meanwhile, a video is becoming viral of a newborn baby being moved safely in a basket, which people said reminded them of Lord Krishna. The government and national disaster agencies are constantly giving Asaam floods updates and requesting people to stay indoors. Barpeta is the worst-hit district with over 1.2 million people being affected due to floods in the area. This was followed by Darrang with over 400,000 people hit by the deluge and Nagaon with over 440,000 people affected. Authorities are running 1,425 relief camps and distribution centres in over 25 districts. Also, 3.4 million animals remain affected in inundated areas, while 5,232 have been washed away by floods. In the past 24 hours, 11 people have died, including 2 children, increasing the death toll to 89. Besides, seven more people went missing across five districts, the Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in its report. Rescue operations are underway. Over 1 lakh people are displaced. Three new fatalities were recorded in Darrang, two in Nagaon -- police personnel who got washed away while trying to rescue marooned people, and one each in Cachar, Dibrugarh, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup and Lakhimpur. Seven people were reported missing, with two each in Udalguri and Kamrup and one each in Cachar, Darrang and Lakhimpur. An army team helped evacuate a cancer patient in her 40s, stuck at her flooded home in Kamrup district’s Palepara vilage for three days, and sent her to an advanced healthcare centre in Guwahati. Three people in their 90s were also evacuated to safety from Kadamtola and Holapara village in Baksa district. They have rescued over a 100 people. Over 10,000 people have been rendered homeless in Tripura due to the flooding caused by incessant rainfall since Friday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also called up Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to enquire about the state of affairs, officials said. However, the situation has deteriorated further on Monday with the death toll rising. In all, 810 relief camps and 615 relief distribution centres have been opened in all the affected areas. According to a report by ASDMA, a total of 2,31,819 people are staying in the relief camps while over 1,13,485 hectares of crops have been damaged. The water in five rivers -- Brahmaputra, Kopili, Beki, Pagladiya, Puthimari -- is flowing above the danger level at several places. <p>A limited-edition Hublot watch that once belonged to the football legend late Diego Maradona was recovered from India’s northeastern Assam state on Saturday morning after it went missing from Dubai.</p>

<p>The watch, worth around Rs 2 million (approx. US $13,206) was allegedly recovered from an Assam resident who used to work in Dubai and had returned to India recently, the Assam Police said.</p>

<p>“In an act of international cooperation @assampolice has coordinated with @dubaipoliceHQ through Indian federal LEA to recover a heritage @Hublot watch belonging to legendary footballer Late Diego Maradona and arrested one Wazid Hussein. Follow up lawful action is being taken,” he said.</p>

<p>According to police, the accused person was working as a security guard at a company in Dubai in UAE that was storing the belongings of the late Argentinian footballer.</p>

<p>The accused is suspected to be involved in the theft of a safe in which the limited edition Hublot watch was also kept, Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said.</p>

<p>After working for a few days at the company, the accused returned to Assam in August, citing his father’s ill health as the reason.</p>

<p>After Dubai Police reached out to the Assam Police with information about the accused, the cops launched a massive hunt to trace his whereabouts.</p>

<p>Subsequently, Wazi Hussain was arrested from his residence at 4 am and the watch was recovered, he said.</p>

<p>Diego Maradona was seen wearing two Hublot Big Bang watches during the FIFA World Cup 2010 when Hublot launched its Maradona Big Bang Chronograph Limited Edition.</p>

<p>The watch has the football legend’s photo, with arms raised in victory, engraved on the back of the Hublot Big Bang Maradona case. It also has his signatures and jersey number.</p>

According to police, the accused person was working as a security guard at a company in Dubai in UAE that was storing the belongings of the late Argentinian footballer. The accused is suspected to be involved in the theft of a safe in which the limited edition Hublot watch was also kept, Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said. After working for a few days at the company, the accused returned to Assam in August, citing his father’s ill health as the reason. After Dubai Police reached out to the Assam Police with information about the accused, the cops launched a massive hunt to trace his whereabouts. Subsequently, Wazi Hussain was arrested from his residence at 4 am and the watch was recovered, he said. Diego Maradona was seen wearing two Hublot Big Bang watches during the FIFA World Cup 2010 when Hublot launched its Maradona Big Bang Chronograph Limited Edition. The watch has the football legend’s photo, with arms raised in victory, engraved on the back of the Hublot Big Bang Maradona case. It also has his signatures and jersey number. <p>The Assam Police have sounded an alert over possible terror strikes by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and terror outfit al-Qaeda over alleged persecution of Muslims in the northeastern Indian state.</p>

<p>A circular issued by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) on Saturday said the alert has been issued following reports received from the Special Branch of the state police.</p>

<p>The circular said the ISI is planning to target individuals including the cadres from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)—India's Hindu nationalist organisation—and army areas in Assam and other places in India.</p>

<p>"There is also a threat from global terror outfits to indulge in spectacular action by resorting to explosion of bombs/ IEDs in places of mass gathering/ mass transport/ religious places, etc," the circular stated.</p>

<p>Another input quoted in the circular said the al-Qaeda has called for jihad in Assam and Kashmir.</p>

<p>The circular further said the general secretariat of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has released a statement regarding the Dhalpur eviction drive in Assam's Darrang district, which had claimed the lives of two persons.</p>
