The Indian athletes were seen in astonishing form during the recently concluded Asian Games in Hangzhou as they helped India surpass the 100-medal tally. A mixture of youth and experience, the athletics team was a prime contributor to India’s success as the country ended with 107 medals. One big contributor to that tally was Punjab’s queen athlete Harmilan Bains. She bagged two silver medals at the continental tournament in 800m and 1500m as she helped the Indian flag fly high at the Asian Games. She spoke exclusively to WION on Wednesday (Oct 18) to reflect on her Asian Games 2023 journey.

<h2>Harmilan opens on Asian Games journey</h2>

“The target was always to win the gold medal at the Asian Games, I had prepared for this for the last few months. My team has been helping me physically and psychologically to get prepared for the Asian Games where we have reached the goal. Although I missed out on the gold, I am happy to see myself returning with two silver medals,” Harmilan said in an exclusive conversation with WION.

Interestingly, Harmilan’s mother Madhuri Singh won a silver medal in the 2002 Busan Asian Games in 800m. She has now grabbed her own piece of medal having bagged a brace in Hangzhou. The Indian athletics team won 29 medals with six gold, 14 silver, and nine bronze medals – the most in any single discipline.&nbsp;

“Yes, it was a dream to replicate my mother’s dream when she won the silver in the same discipline in Busan. It is always too hard to live on the expectations and replicate your parent's success, but I am proud of the achievement. I remember when I was four years old, my mom put her silver medal around my neck and that is where my journey started. Now I have completed a full circle to make their dream come true to win an Asian Games medal,” Harmilan added.

<h2>Olympics remain a long-term target</h2>

She also opened up on her Olympic journey where she is yet to book her tickets having earlier missed out on qualification. With the Paris Olympics 10 months away, Harmilan’s target would be to secure qualification for the big event as she now targets a successful run in the next few months to come.&nbsp;

“Olympic qualification will always remain the aim; I am pushing for the Paris Olympic qualification having missed by four seconds in August. So to just get there and aim for a tournament like this and carry the nation’s flag has always been a dream for me. I get around my fellow athletes who have been there and breached success, I keep speaking to Neeraj Chopra and Avinash Sabale, who have boosted my confidence on multiple fronts,” Harmilan concluded.

Exclusive: Target was always to win a medal at Asian Games - Harmilan Bains reflects on epic journey

India’s Asian Games gold boy Avinash Sable opened up on his recent success after he grabbed two medals in Hangzhou. Avinash won the gold medal in 3000m steeplechase as India crossed the 100-medal benchmark for the first time in the Games history. He also won a silver medal in the 5000m to add icing to the cake. Avinash clocked 8:19:50s to win the gold medal and also broke the national record for India. However, the star athlete’s next target remains the Olympics where he targets at least a medal for India.

<h2>Avinash targets Olympic glory</h2>

“To win the Olympic medal will always remain my goal but for now, I want to live with the Asian Games' success. I was tough going in 2018 when I missed out on the qualification through injury, but this time I have left no stone unturned to get the job done. I had been preparing for this for quite a time now knowing that I did not have the best runs during the Tokyo Games. The silver in Birmingham Commonwealth Games was also a big part of my motivation as I wanted to upgrade my medal colour,” Avinash said while speaking to the press as he attended the Fast&amp;Up’s conclave in Delhi on Monday (Oct 16).

Avinash had an amazing run in the Asian Games having missed out on the top prize at the Commonwealth Games. His current aim is to focus on the next few months where he can find the missing piece in the puzzle to go all the way in the Paris Olympics.

“Yes, I know it is tough for me to win at the Olympics with the current time record I possess, but I am prepared to give it all in for the upcoming 9-10 months before we reach Paris. My coaches and my team will play a big role in me getting to the success, but I know if I can improve on my current performance our nation could add another medal at the Olympics in the Athletics department,” Avinash added.

The programme also featured Rutuja Bhosale (gold medal in mixed doubles) and Srihari Natraj (swimmer) reflecting on their journeys at the Asian Games. Rutuja won gold alongside Rohan Bopanna in the mixed doubles event as India surpassed the 100-medal tally at the Asian Games. <h2>Warm welcome for hockey team</h2>

"This journey has been amazing," Indian Men's Hockey Team Captain Harmanpreet Singh said.

"We went to Hangzhou with the mindset of being Asia's best team and we wanted to play accordingly. We kept improving match-by-match which built our confidence, and we came back with the result we desired."

Led by the ever-impressing Harmanpreet Singh, India clinched their fourth gold medal at the Asian Games to become the continental champions. India thrashed Japan 5-1 in the final which also ensured their Olympics qualification. The winner of the Asian Games gold medal gets a direct spot in the Olympics and India now look forward to the Paris Games.

The Indian men’s team won gold medals at the Asian Games in 1966, 1998, and 2014 previously.

The gold medal also means India has won all three top medals in various competitions: at the Olympics (Bronze), Commonwealth Games (Gold), and the Asian Games (Gold). The rare occasion comes after 41 years when India won Gold at the 1980 Olympics while also winning medals at the 1982 Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.

India had a fruitful campaign at the Asian Games in the men’s division where they beat Uzbekistan 16-0 followed 16-1 win over Singapore. The Men in Blue would then win 4-2 against Japan in the final pool match.

In the knockout stage, India got the better of arch rivals Pakistan 10-2 while also beating South Korea 5-3 in the semis. India scored 68 goals in the Asian Games men’s discipline, averaging 9.71 goals per match.

Asian Games 2023: Disciplines with Most Medals for India

The penultimate day of the Asian Games was overshadowed by a controversial kabaddi final that was suspended for an hour on Saturday, as South Korea won a third men's football title in a row.

The curtain comes down Sunday on the biggest Asian Games in history, boasting 12,000 athletes, after two weeks of competition across 40 sports.

Saturday was the most action-packed of the fortnight, with gold medals up for grabs in 24 sports including football, cricket, badminton, kabaddi, hockey and breakdancing.

India have surpassed all expectations by breaching the century mark of medals for the first time.

It bodes well for the Paris Olympics, which are less than 10 months away.

In early action on a grey and soggy day in Hangzhou, India swept up two golds in archery and another in women's kabaddi.

But what should have been a day of celebration came with a large dollop of controversy.

The men's kabaddi final against Iran descended into chaos and was suspended, before India finally sealed the title.

Kabaddi is a tag-meets-rugby contact team sport rooted in Indian mythology and said to date back 5,000 years.

A captivating final was locked at 28-28 with just over a minute left when India went on a "raid" for points, with both teams claiming they should get the decision.

That sparked a prolonged video review, then a standoff and the suspension of the final, as numerous officials checked the footage and attempted to make a ruling.

The action in what was an eagerly anticipated showdown was put on hold as both teams at different points appeared to refuse to play and argued their case.

Order was eventually restored with the score at 31-29 in India's favour.

Iran reluctantly carried on but they were deflated and quickly slumped to a 33-29 defeat.

Iran coach Gholamreza Mazandarani pointed the finger at the officials and also accused the Indian team of putting pressure on the referees.

"This is very bad, very bad for kabaddi," he said of the fractious scenes.

India also sealed men's cricket gold in a similarly anti-climactic fashion.

They were declared winners of the final against Afghanistan under an Asian Games-specific rule where the higher-ranked team takes the honours if the match cannot be finished, in this case due to rain.

India reached the end of the day with 107 medals in total, 28 of those gold.

But they will finish a long way behind China in the final medals table. The hosts are well ahead of the rest with 382 medals, 200 of them gold.

<h2>Military exemption</h2>

In the men's football final, Paris Saint-Germain star Lee Kang-in helped South Korea win gold for the third time in a row -- and earn a military exemption.

South Korea recovered from going a goal down after only two minutes to beat Japan 2-1.

Cho Young-wook scored the winner in the second half in a competition featuring under-24 squads plus three overage players.

Nearly every able-bodied South Korean male is required to perform at least 18 months of service, but the government rewards Asian Games gold medals and Olympic medals of any colour with an exemption.

The first medals in Asian Games history were at stake in breakdancing, ahead of making another landmark debut at next year's Paris Games.

The history-makers were Japan's Shigeyuki Nakarai in winning the men's crown while Liu Qingyi of China triumphed in the women's category. It also earned them each a spot in Paris. "When I started breaking, nobody imagined it would be part of an Olympics," said Nakarai. Asian Games: Kabaddi kerfuffle overshadows day as South Korea retain football crown

India’s shooting contingent scripted history on multiple fronts at the ongoing Asian Games in Hangzhou, China as they continued their purple patch. With 22 medals, Indian shooters were at their fluent best to help India reach the 100-medal tally at the Asian Games, being a prime contributor to the nation’s overall success. Part of that contingent was Haryana’s Palak Gulia, who clinched gold and silver medals to wave the nation’s flag overseas in China.

Palak sat down with WION’s Aditya Pimpale in an exclusive chat on Saturday (Oct 7) as she reflected on her astonishing journey. India’s shooting team won seven gold, nine bronze, and six bronze medals with Palak winning two of those in 10 metre pistol’s event in both individual and team events.

How did you cherish the moment when the Indian flag was hoisted in China after winning the gold medal in the 10m pistol?

It was the proudest moment in my life to see the national flag get hoisted up after winning the gold medal. I could not control my emotions in the moment as my dream came true to see myself with a gold medal at the Asian Games.

How inspiring is Neeraj Chopra, someone who you saw closely at the Asian Games?

I have always drawn inspiration from Neeraj Chopra ever since he won the Olympic gold medal. I was really looking forward to meeting him in the Hangzhou Games village, but unfortunately, it did not happen because of a tight travel schedule. But he has always been a big inspiration for me and I am looking forward to meeting him in the future.

What was the role of your parents in your epic journey to glory?

My parents have always supported me in every walk of my sporting career, whether it was migrating from a small town like Jhajjar to Gurgaon or traveling with me during the tournaments. I have always enjoyed their support and without them, this journey wouldn’t have been possible.

What was the role of the backroom team that prepared you for an occasion like this?

I am also thankful to a big team that works behind me as the Reliance Foundation helped me during my rehabilitation from a shoulder injury last year. My nutritionist played a key role in helping me balance my diet during my travels. It is not always possible to get the same diet everywhere I travel, so they play a key role in getting things done for me. My rehabilitation process was carried out smoothly with the support of the Reliance Foundation.

What are your goals for the time to come, knowing you won’t be competing at the Olympics?

The Olympics are always the dream for anyone associated with a sport, although I missed out on the qualification for Paris, my focus is always on giving my best shot. Currently, I am setting a short-term targets and fulfilling those which could see me get better prepared for future events.

How was your chemistry with Esha and Divya especially competing with them and against them in different events?

Me, Divya, and Esha are roommates during the international tour so there is a great chemistry we have developed over the years. Winning gold was always the target but to compete against someone you know closely is a different feeling altogether. I did not start on a high in the final, but then I recovered to see off competition from Esha, whom I know very well. Winning the silver medal in the team’s event came the icing on the cake as I was delighted for another podium finish.

What is your aim for the future, considering you are already shining high at the age of 17?

My aim is always to do my best in the finals rather than the qualification; I somehow try to keep my best for the finals. I love playing in the finals of the big events that have seen me rise in recent years.

Asian Games: Bangladesh beat Pakistan in last-ball thriller to bag bronze medal

Indian badminton pair Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj scripted history in the men’s doubles as they brought home the country’s maiden medal in the discipline on Saturday (Oct 7) at the ongoing 19th Asian Games. <h2>Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj lead India to glory</h2>

Coming into the final, the pair was in top form knowing a win would see them script history in the men’s discipline. The pair did not have the best start as they trailed 4-8 at one stage while struggling with the pace of their opposition’s attack. At the midway point in the first game, the Korean pair led by 11-9 putting early pressure on Chirag and Satwik.

However, the Indian pair did not give up easily despite trailing 15-18 and then pocketed six consecutive points to win the first game. This set the pace for the duo to start their journey towards the gold medal.&nbsp;

Unlike the first game, the second game was a one-sided affair for the Indian pair as they stamped their authority from the start. The Indian pair quickly rose&nbsp;to a 10-6 lead while leading 11-7 at the midway point in the second game. The Koreans then showed some fight and quickly came back with three consecutive points with the scores reading 11-10.

The affairs would then get tight for the next few minutes before Chirag and Satwik put the finishing touches leading 20-15. Choi Solgyu and Kim Wonho saved one match point but could not hold on before handing the Indian pair a historic gold.

The win also saw Chirag and Satwiksairaj become the number one men’s doubles pair as they continued their excellent run. With eyes now on the Olympics, both will look to add another feather to their impressive hat.

Later in the day, India are also expected to win top prize in men’s cricket and men’s kabaddi while already pocketing gold in women’s kabaddi.

The pair did not have the best start as they trailed 4-8 at one stage while struggling with the pace of their opposition’s attack. At the midway point in the first game, the Korean pair led by 11-9 putting early pressure on Chirag and Satwik. However, the Indian pair did not give up easily despite trailing 15-18 and then pocketed six consecutive points to win the first game. This set the pace for the duo to start their journey towards the gold medal. Unlike the first game, the second game was a one-sided affair for the Indian pair as they stamped their authority from the start. The Indian pair quickly rose to a 10-6 lead while leading 11-7 at the midway point in the second game. The Koreans then showed some fight and quickly came back with three consecutive points with the scores reading 11-10. Asian Games: India script history with gold in badminton men's doubles

India beat Bangladesh by nine wickets on Friday, October 6 to enter the Asian Games 2023 final. Chasing a paltry target of 97, India made small work of chase as they reached the target in 9.2 overs to seal the win. Tilak Varma scored a lightning fast 55&nbsp;off 26&nbsp;in the chase while skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 40&nbsp;off 26.

The duo stitched an unbeaten partnership of 97 runs after India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal early in the first over itself for a duck. That was, however, the only success Bangladesh had as Indian batters romped them after it. Bangladesh had no answers to onslaught by India batters as they hit a collective of nine sixes (six by Varma and three by Gaikwad) to decimate their bowling.

Earlier, India won the toss and elected to field first against Bangladesh. The Asian giants rocked Bangladesh early as they scalped three wickets inside the six-over powerplay for just 21 runs. Spinner Sai Kishore was the first one to strike for India with the wicket of Mahmudul Hasan in the fifth over of the innings.&nbsp;

Washington Sundar then took out Bangladesh skipper Saif Hassan in the very next over before taking out Zakir Hasan two balls later. Tilak Varma then joined the party by removing opener Parvez Hossain as Bangladesh slipper to 4/36 in 8.4 overs.

Sai Kishore took another wicket in the 11th over by removing Shahadat Hossain, sending half the Bangla side back even before they hit 50 on the scorecard. Sai took another wicket of Afif Hossian, finishing his quota of four overs with three wickets for 12 runs. Bangladesh eventually could manage just 96/6 in their 20 overs with India spinners taking eight of their nine wickets while Arshdeep Singh also claimed one.

Apart from Sai's three, Tilak Varma, Ravi Bishnoi, and Shabaz Ahmed each took one while Sundar took two.

Barman&nbsp;alleged that such performance was not possible in four months, referring to&nbsp;Agasara.&nbsp;

<h2>Agasara's response&nbsp;</h2>

Despite the gravity of the allegations,&nbsp;Agasara kept a cool head and urged her compatriot to come up with proof to back up her claims.&nbsp;

"I know what I am. Ask her to show proof. I will also show that I have won the medal for India. I only want to do well for the country,"&nbsp;Agasara was quoted as saying by India Today.&nbsp;

George claimed that winning in China was difficult for Indians&nbsp;as their officials were always up to some 'mischief' to disrupt the athletes.&nbsp;

"This is not only with the Neeraj. Firstly, it happened with our workers. Secondly, it happened with our Jyothi, and yesterday it happened with our javelin thrower, Annu Rani. And today it happened with Jena and Neeraj. So this is not just, uh I think they are purposefully doing this. I'm deeply, uh, saddened to see such kinds of incidents happening in the Asian Games," said George.&nbsp;

She added that the federation was looking to lodge protest against the Chinese officials.&nbsp;

"We are planning to protest against the officials. Now the competition is over. We've got gold and silver for Neeraj, Jena and Annu Rani. But this cannot because we knew. uh, our winning medals in China is very difficult. Even if you do better, they will do some mischief."

Notably, on Wednesday (October 4), Chopra won the gold medal but&nbsp;not before he was asked to re-attempt his first throw which was not measured during the first try, due to reasons unknown.&nbsp;

<h2>Neeraj Chopra questions officials&nbsp;</h2>

Speaking after the event,&nbsp;Chopra questioned the officials, whilst urging the Indian side to look into the matter.&nbsp;

“They didn’t measure it properly. The next athlete threw quickly after me and then they lost the mark. For a while, they kept searching for the point of landing. I went and asked the officials what happened. I knew it was a good throw. I don’t know exactly how far it went but it felt good. Because they couldn’t figure out the mark, they offered to let me do the first throw again," said Chopra.&nbsp;

“The more we delayed, it was ruining the competition for other athletes also. Because there was wind and everyone was getting cold. This is the first time I am seeing something like this. The rule is six but I threw seven,” Chopra said after the event.

The controversies did not stop there as Chopra's compatriot and countryman Kishore Kumar Jena, who secured the silver medal, was wrongly flagged for an illegal attempt during one of his throws.&nbsp;

Chopra also pointed towards a similar error involving another Indian athlete earlier in the day. Notably, India's Jyothi Yarraji was wrongly disqualified for a false start in the women’s 100m hurdles race.

“Happened with Jyothi too. And with me and Jena too.&nbsp;Gadbad toh hai.&nbsp;(This is wrong). But our results spoke for themselves. Despite everything, our hard work paid off. Our team should definitely look into why so many things have gone wrong. I haven’t seen this in big competitions because, after a disruption to the first throw, it could have thrown me off balance. We saw how Jyothi had to fight."

Despite the blockades, India is having its best-ever performance at the Asian Games and could easily end up with more than 90 medals.&nbsp;

Uzbek cyclist Aleksey Fomovskiy and Philippine mountain-bike rider Ariana Evangelista both failed doping tests at the Hangzhou Asian Games, officials said Wednesday, making it three announced in 24 hours.

The 22-year-old Fomovskiy, who came fifth in the men's omnium points race on September 28, failed a drug test for anabolic steroids, the International Testing Agency said.

The sample was collected on the day of the event, said the ITA, which handles some areas of doping control at the Games.

Hours earlier, the ITA said that Evangelista had failed a drug test, for the banned substance erythropoietin (EPO), which also enhances performance.

Asian Games 2023: Three players fail doping tests in 24 hours, suspended provisionally

South Korean roller skater Jung Cheol-won endured an agonising heartbreak after he celebrated a tad too early before crossing the finish&nbsp;line. Leading the 3,000-metre relay race at the Hangzhou Asian Games in China on Monday (October 2), Jung eased up and raised his arms in the home stretch of the race, only to be pipped by Taiwan's&nbsp;Huang Yu-Lin and his outstretched leg on the line.

The 27-year-old South Korean was poised to finish the race in the first place but his momentary lapse in concentration not only caused his team to lose out on&nbsp;the gold medal but also meant that they would now have to mandatorily enrol in the country's&nbsp;military service.&nbsp;

“I made a rather big mistake,” Jung was quoted as saying by Reuters. “I didn’t come at full speed to the finish line. I let my guard down too early. I am very sorry.”

South Korean roller skater Jung Cheol-won endured an agonising heartbreak after he celebrated a tad too early before crossing the finish line. The 27-year-old South Korean was poised to finish the race in the first place but his momentary lapse in concentration not only caused his team to lose out on the gold medal but also meant that they would now have to mandatorily enrol in the country's military service. “I made a rather big mistake,” Jung was quoted as saying by Reuters. “I didn’t come at full speed to the finish line. <h2>India rise high</h2>

Starting the day with 69 medals, India equalled their previous best after race walkers Manju Rani and Ram Baboo won the bronze medal in the 35km race walk mixed team event. History was scripted when Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Pravin Ojas Deotale won gold in the Compound Archery Mixed Team event and took India’s tally to 71 medals in the Asian Games. This saw India record their best tally in the Asian Games.

So far, at the time of writing, India has bagged 16 gold, 27 silver, and 31 bronze medals which totals 74 medals overall. This is India’s joint-best gold medal tally, having equaled the 2018 record in Jakarta while the 27 silver medals are also the best they have achieved in the games. In terms of bronze medals, India still needs six medals to surpass their 2014 Incheon tally where they amassed 36.

As things stand, India will intend to surpass the 100-medal tally they targeted before the start of the Asian Games. Shooters have been primary contributors to India’s success as they won 22 medals including seven gold, nine silver, and six bronze medals. Athletics has seen India rack up 23 medals where they have scripted history on multiple fronts.

India’s Boxing team and Rowing team come next with five medals each while there have been three medals each in Sailing and Squash. India also won historic medals in women’s cricket, Equestrian, Wushu, and other events.

With the men’s cricket team and Neeraj Chopra in Javelin Throw yet to spark magic, India could be on the rise in the overall medals. India still needs 26 medals to achieve the 100-medal mark with four days still to go before the closing ceremony of the games on Sunday (Oct 8).&nbsp;

Asian Games: India registers record medals tally in Hangzhou as players continue to excel

An image of two Chinese athletes hugging during the Asian Games is being censored by Chinese social media after the athletes' race lane numbers inadvertantly formed a reference to the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. Lin Yuwei and Wu Yanni hugged after women's 100m hurdles final. Lin won gold in the race. As both athletes hugged, Lin's lane number 6 was visible next to Wu's lane number, 4. The Tiananmen Square massacre took place on June 4 1989 and is often referred to as "6/4". Any allusion to the incident on the fateful day in 1989 is censored by Chinese authorities.

A report in The Guardian cited posts on Chinese social media network Weibo,&nbsp;which said that grey squares were visible in the picture where the numbers should have been. &nbsp;

Some Chinese news articles however, have reportedly published the photo without any editing.&nbsp;

The Tiananmen Square protests were huge, student-led pro-democracy demonstrations in Beijing and were ultimately suppressed by the Communist government in China. Troops and even tanks were sent to crush the protests.

In China, internet censorship operations involve human monitors who take a call on what content is to be restricted.

Weibo said in 2017 that it had employed 1000 'supervisors' who were to report on content that was “pornographic, illegal and harmful”. Weibo, the biggest social media network in China has 600 million monthly users.

The race in which Lin Yuwei won gold medal took place on China's National Day on October 1. The race was overshadowed by controversy.

Wu was given a red card for false start at the beginning of the race. She was allowed to contest after a protest. She finished 0.03 seconds behind her teammate who won the gold. However, Wu was disqualified after the race which allowed Jyothi Yarraji (India) to win silver medal.

Wu Yanni is one of the star athletes in China. Experts and fans of the sport were surprised when she was allowed to run in spite of a red card at the beginning of the race.

Mark Dreyer, a China-based sports expert took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his displeasure

"I'm sure some excuse will be invented for the press conference, but China's track darling Wu Yanni - who's had huge play in Chinese media this year - clearly false started in the women's 100m hurdles. Red card given, no arguments. 5 mins of discussion, then they let her back in," he posted

Chinese censors rush to block 'Tiananmen' image of hugging athletes at Asian Games

Ruturaj Gaikwad-led India opened their campaign in Asian Games 2023 with a 23-run win over Nepal on Tuesday (October 3). Riding on Yashasvi Jaiswal's maiden T20I ton (49-ball 100) and Rinku Singh's 15-ball 37 not out, India posted 202 for 4 and restricted the opposition to 179 for 9. With the win, India have progressed to the semi-finals. Jaiswal continued his rich form and scored his first-ever T20I century. In addition, he surpassed Shubman Gill to achieve a major Indian record.&nbsp;

Jaiswal, at the age of 21 years and 279 days, went past Gill's T20I record of being India's youngest-ever centurion in the shortest format. It is to be noted that the right-hander scored his maiden T20I hundred against New Zealand early this year. The 24-year-old Gill&nbsp;had smashed an impressive 126 not out, the highest individual score by an Indian in the format. Back then, Gill was 23 years old.

Talking about Jaiswal, the left-hander has been in sublime form this year. He ended IPL 2023 as the fifth-highest run-getter (with 625 runs in 14 games, including a best of 124). He carried his form during India's all-format tour of West Indies, slamming an impressive 171 on his Test debut and was among the runs in the five T20Is as well. Now, the youngster has started the Asian Games with a bang. Hence, he will be desperate to carry on with the momentum and take India to gold at the games -- where he also became the country's first-ever centurion on Tuesday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jaiswal is surely ticking all the boxes at the moment and is emerging as a strong contender to open for India in the next year's T20 World Cup, in West Indies and the USA. However, the mega event is still far away, hence, he would like to maintain consistency in the upcoming months.

Ruturaj Gaikwad-led India opened their campaign in Asian Games 2023 with a 23-run win over Nepal on Tuesday (October 3). Riding on Yashasvi Jaiswal's maiden T20I ton (49-ball 100) and Rinku Singh's 15-ball 37 not out, India posted 202 for 4 and restricted the opposition to 179 for 9.

With the win, India have progressed to the semi-finals. Jaiswal continued his rich form and scored his first-ever T20I century. In addition, he surpassed Shubman Gill to achieve a major Indian record. Jaiswal, at the age of 21 years and 279 days, went past Gill's T20I record of being India's youngest-ever centurion in the shortest format. It is to be noted that the right-hander scored his maiden T20I hundred against New Zealand early this year. The 24-year-old Gill had smashed an impressive 126 not out, the highest individual score by an Indian in the format. Back then, Gill was 23 years old. Also read: CWC '23: Rohit can afford to play the accumulator role and score big hundreds, feels former India batter Talking about Jaiswal, the left-hander has been in sublime form this year. He ended IPL 2023 as the fifth-highest run-getter (with 625 runs in 14 games, including a best of 124). He carried his form during India's all-format tour of West Indies, slamming an impressive 171 on his Test debut and was among the runs in the five T20Is as well. Now, the youngster has started the Asian Games with a bang. Hence, he will be desperate to carry on with the momentum and take India to gold at the games -- where he also became the country's first-ever centurion on Tuesday. Jaiswal is surely ticking all the boxes at the moment and is emerging as a strong contender to open for India in the next year's T20 World Cup, in West Indies and the USA. However, the mega event is still far away, hence, he would like to maintain consistency in the upcoming months. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. <h2>Jaiswal in top form</h2>

Playing in his first Asian Games contest, the impressive lad from Mumbai continued his purple patch in 2023 with a hundred. Jaiswal took 48 deliveries to complete his hundred while smashing the ball left, right, and centre. His innings consisted of 7 sixes and 8 fours and scored at a strike rate of more than 200 against an inexperienced Nepal side.

India captain Ruturaj Gaikwad initially won the toss and elected to bat as Jaiswal and Co fired from the start. Skipper Gaikwad scored 25 runs before getting out while Tilak Varma (2) and Jitesh Sharma (5) failed to make an impression. Rinku Singh (37) and Shivam Dube (25) would then lead India to 202/4 as they dominated with the bat.

Avesh Khan took three wickets for 32 while Ravi Bishnoi picked up three scalps by conceding 24. Arshdeep Singh got two wickets and Sai Kishore picked up one wicket.

Chasing a massive target, Nepal lost their first wicket early. Avesh Khan dismissed Aasif Sheikh in the 4th over at 10. Nepal tried to steer the innings by batting steadily, however, they could not succeed as they lost their second wicket in the 9th over. This time, Sai Kishore cleaned up Kushal Bhurtel at 28.

Nepal were looking helpless as two more batters went back to the pavilion in the 11th over. Ravi Bishnoi struck his magic and picked up the wickets of Kushal Malla (29) and Rohit Paudel (3).

“Iran has been a dominant force in Kabaddi in recent years, but I am hopeful and confident that both the Indian teams will do better than the previous edition, and come back with the Gold,” she said.

“It was really a big achievement for me (winning a silver medal at the Asian Games) as I intend to set a new benchmark. I have come a long way from where I started and inspiring the next generation of athletes will be the biggest motivation for me. <h2>Jyothi wins silver in chaotic manner</h2>

Having finished third in the women's 100m hurdles, the Indian athlete initially won a bronze medal in the Asian Games. However, upon review, China’s crowd favourite Yanni Wu was disqualified for a false start, resulting in Jyothi bagging silver.

Speaking on the chaos before the race, Jyothi reflected on how she managed the situation and kept her composure.

“It was hard for me to handle the situation as I was also initially disqualified to compete. However, I kept my cool and concentrated on the job at hand, and gave my best shot. My coach James Hillier outlined circumstances of similar situations in the training, which helped me keep my concentration while I faced temporary disqualification."

EXCLUSIVE | Want to set new benchmark for women athletes in India - Jyothi Yarraji after Asian Games success

Ajith Markose, coach of Indian Asian Games 10000 m medallists Kartik Kumar and Gulveer Singh said that both the athletes were dedicated and that's what set them apart from others.

The final of the men's 10000m was a double delight for India as Kartik bagged silver and Gulveer clinched bronze in the Asian Games on Saturday.

“What sets them apart is their dedication. They are always very open to inputs and suggestions. For athletes so young, their understanding of their body is very good. That is what sets them apart,” Ajith told Reliance Foundation.

Kartik won silver with a timing of 28:15.38s while Gulveer clocked 28:17.21s to claim the bronze.

Both Indians got into medal contention in the final 100 metres after three of their competitors fell in quick succession after colliding with each other.

“They have been a part of Reliance Foundation's athletics program since October last year. We have been preparing for this season. They were a part of our training centre in Ooty. A lot of credit also has to go to their Army coach Yunus Khan" said the coach.

"Coach Khan was instrumental in getting them to our camp. After preparation, they went to the national camp, where they have been working with coach Scott Simmons from United States of America. Their improved confidence has helped them a lot in today’s display" the coach added.

Ajith Markose further praised both athletes and said that they improved their personal performance.

“Kartik just went all out and broke the rhythm of all the other athletes. He is someone who always likes to surge at the beginning. That’s his strength. The incredible thing about today is both of them improved their personal bests by almost half a minute" he said.

A medal was within their reach but it would have only happened with a personal best and they did that today. They delivered when it mattered the most. Surendra Singh, the current national record holder in 10000m has also guided them at the national camp and deserves a lot of credit,” he added.

ALSO READ | Asian Games: Avinash Sable sets new record; Tajinder Pal Singh Toor also bags gold in shot put "Coach Khan was instrumental in getting them to our camp. 'What sets them apart is dedication': Coach Ajith Markose on Asian Games medallists Kartik and Gulveer

Jyothi Yarraji capped a memorable year in style by winning silver in the women’s 100m hurdles event at the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Sunday, October 1. Yarraji’s silver is the maiden medal for India in the women’s 100m hurdles event at the competition and also India’s best result ever. She clocked a time of 12.91s in the final. Fellow athlete and defending champion Jinson Johnson also scripted history at the Hangzhou Asian Games by becoming only the second Indian to win a medal in multiple editions of the games in the men’s 1500m event. Jinson clocked a time of 3:39.74s in the final to win bronze.

“This was my first Asian Games. So I’m feeling very happy to win silver. There was a lot of responsibility on my shoulders. My idols are Neeraj bhaiya (Neeraj Chopra) and my coach James Hillier. He motivated me a lot before the final. The coach explained everything to me and it helped me visualise the final and then execute our plans. I want to thank him and Reliance Foundation for their unconditional support,” Yarraji said after her achievement.

She has now set her sights on doing even better in the next year. “In the upcoming season, I will look to improve on my timings further. I will work even harder. The start was tough for me because I didn’t do any wrong but I tried to put it aside. It just motivated me to do even better,” Yarraji said when asked about the drama that unfolded at the start of the race that saw the result being reviewed.

James Hillier, Athletics Director, lauded Yarraji’s poise and grit in the face of adversity on the big stage.

“It has been a rollercoaster day. We were disappointed when Jyothi didn’t qualify for the 200m final earlier today. She regathered her thoughts extremely well though to set that aside and regain her focus for the hurdles final. Ultimately, there was a lot of drama but she held her nerve and got the job done. The silver medal is a great achievement. It is a testament to the great year she has had.

“It has been a very long year and it’s very hard to prepare for a competition this late in the year. Jyothi has done really well to keep delivering. Winning a medal in the Asian Games is a huge deal for an Indian athlete. It is a very big moment for her and I’m delighted for her,” Hillier said.

Speaking after the final, Jinson said the medal was very gratifying considering the various injury setbacks he has suffered in the last four years.

“I am very happy. I didn’t compete at all at the international level in the three previous years. This is my third Asian Games medal, so it’s very special. I already had won Gold and Silver in Jakarta and now I have a bronze, so I have the complete set. I was in 4th position entering the home straight, I managed to move up to 3rd in the last 30 metres with a strong finish and I’m happy with this display,” the RF athlete said after the final.

Ajith Markose, coach at RF endurance centre in Ooty, touched upon Jinson’s journey over the last few years.

<h2>On hardships Jinson faced</h2>

“After being at the peak of his career in 2019, Jinson suffered a debilitating ACL injury while training in the US. It was the sports science team at the Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital that managed to successfully treat the injury and his rehab was led by Reliance Foundation’s physiotherapist Ronak Hosabettu. It was a really tough time for Jinson as his injury had to be managed very carefully. Most of the time, he was struggling to even walk. At the Asian Athletics Championships earlier this year, he picked up a hamstring niggle before his race and couldn’t do well, finishing out of the medals.”

<h2>Jinson’s turnaround</h2>

“In Indian Grand Prix 5, he ran under 3:40 for the 1st time since 2019. He clocked his season best of 3:39.32s there to win Gold. He gained a lot of confidence from that and has been in excellent shape since then. He carried that confidence and delivered here. This medal is a reflection of his experience. He’s an athlete who knows how to deliver on the big stage. He has always been a big stage performer. Huge salute to him considering all the adversities he has had to overcome. For a middle-distance runner past 30 to come back from an injury like this is not easy. This is a fantastic display from him.

&nbsp;“The heats are always usually slower. Jinson’s heat was slow but he knew all he needed was a top six finish, so he held his position very well. In the heat, the strategy was to only qualify for the final and expend as little energy as possible.”

RF athletes have won a total of seven medals in Huangzhou so far. Apart from Jinson and Jyothi, Kartik Kumar and Gulveer Singh notched an unprecedented 2-3 finish in the men's 10000m event. Dhruv Kapila was also part of the men's team in badminton, who registered their best ever finish by winning silver. Teen phenom Palak Gulia was the first RF athlete to medal at this edition, winning gold in the women's 10m air pistol event as well as a silver in the women's 10m air pistol team event.

<h2>India beat Pakistan in thriller</h2>

It was not the best start for India as Pakistan dominated the first match in the best-of-three finals with Mahesh Mangaonkar losing in straight games against Nasir Iqbal. The dominant Pakistan star won 11-8, 11-3, 11-2 to rally past Mangaonkar in a one-sided contest. Mangaonkar was earlier beaten 6-11, 11-13, 11-9, 8-11 by Iqbal in the group stage.

India then had a must-win situation as veteran Saurav Ghosal stepped in at the crucial moment. He would conquer the contest 11-5, 11-1, 11-3 to get India back in the gold medal contest. The win came in next to no time as Saurav showcased his experience at the court. Sourav had earlier beaten Muhammad Asim 11-3, 11-5, 11-1 in the group stage meeting and showed no signs of slowing down.

With the best of the three finals leveled at 1-1, both India and Pakistan had their eyes on the gold with Abhay Singh and Noor Zaman playing in a decisive contest. Having lost to Noor Zaman in the group stage of the Asian Games earlier, Abhay had a score to settle with the Pakistan player. The Indian acer started on the front foot as he pocketed the first game 11-7 assuring early dominance.

Noor would then come back to win the second game 11-9 in a tight finish while he was the dominant force in the third. Despite being level at 7-7, the Pakistani player won four consecutive points in the third game to win and give Pakistan a 2-1 lead in the decisive final contest. With the gold medal slipping away, Abhay would then show high-level commitment to win the fourth game 11-9, despite trailing 7-9 at one stage. Pakistan needed just two points to win the gold medal at that point.

With the match reaching anticlimax, Abhay and Noor went toe-to-toe in the final game to decide the gold medal. However, the Indian star lost concentration at 8-8 as Noor would win the next two points to have two match points. Abhay however won the next four points to win the match and clinch a historic gold medal for India.

Asian Games: Abhay Singh saves match points against Pak in thriller contest to clinch historic gold in squash

Reigning World Champion Nikhat Zareen on Friday assured India a medal in the 50kg weight category after beating Jordan's Hanan Nassar by KO in two minutes in a quarterfinal of the ongoing 19th Asian Games.

With this victory, Nikhat also officially sealed her place in India's Paris Olympics contingent. As for her Asian Games campaign, she will be up against Thailand's Chuthamat Raksat in the semifinal.

The Indian boxer needed less than two minutes to overcome Jordan's Nassar Hanan in the quarterfinals, as her merciless boxing caused the referee to end the contest via RSC (referee stops count).

Nikhat was aggressive from the start, launching a flurry of assaults on her opponent, causing the referee to award her a standing count three times. The World Champion was simply too strong a challenge for Nassar. The referee had to stop the bout in the first round after Nikhat delivered a barrage of punches.

In other boxing results on Friday, Parveen Hooda secured her spot in the last eight while Lakshya Chahar suffered a defeat 4:1 on points against Kyrgyzstan's Omurbek Bekzhigit Uulu in the men's 80kg round of 16.&nbsp;

In the previous round, Nikhat had already established her authority over her South Korean opponent, defeating Chorong Bak 5-0 in the second round of the women's event.

In other boxing results on Friday, Parveen Hooda secured her spot in the last eight while Lakshya Chahar suffered a defeat 4:1 on points against Kyrgyzstan's Omurbek Bekzhigit Uulu in the men's 80kg round of 16. Asian Games: Boxer Nikhat Zareen secures Olympic quota; assures medal after semifinal win

An Afghan boxer has been provisionally suspended for failing a doping test at the Asian Games, the International Testing Agency (ITA) said, the first reported drugs case at the event. The 37-year-old Mohammad Khaibar Nooristani, who was defeated on Monday in the preliminary rounds of the 71kg weight class in Hangzhou, tested positive for two banned substances, the ITA said.

Both were anabolic steroids. The boxer was tested four days before his bout but it takes time for positive results to come through. "The sample was collected by the ITA at the Asian Games Hangzhou during an out-of-competition anti-doping control performed on September 21, 2023," the body said Thursday. "The athlete has been informed of the case and has been provisionally suspended with immediate effect. He has the right to request the analysis of the B-sample."

Speaking earlier this week, Mani Jegathesan, an adviser to the Olympic Council of Asia's anti-doping committee, warned that drug cheats at the Games would be rooted out. "Every athlete participating in these Games must understand that they could be picked at any time," Jegathesan warned. "That is the best step to ensuring we have a clean event."

There are about 12,000 athletes at the 19th Asian Games, more competitors than at the Olympics, and Jegathesan admitted it would be impossible to test them all. Instead, they will prioritise, including picking out those who break world or Asian records. They will also home in on athletes if they receive "intelligence".
