Revsportz also reported that the 27-year-old had been helping fellow Indian MMA fighter Suchika Tariyan before going to the sauna for his weight cut. He reportedly lost consciousness around 1 am and was found by a Nepalese athlete, who helped take him to a doctor. Indian officials, including MMA India president Nikhil Kunder, rushed to assist Sanyal. However, the doctor later declared him unfit to compete, ending his campaign before he could enter the arena. The accommodation delays added to the challenges of managing recovery, nutrition and weight ahead of a major combat sports event. For Sanyal, the problems were followed by a disappointing outcome as he was ruled out before getting the opportunity to compete at the Asian Games.

India made a strong start to their shooting campaign at the 20th Asian Games, winning two silver medals on the opening day at the Aichi Prefectural General Shooting Gallery. Olympian Elavenil Valarivan secured silver in the women’s 10m air rifle individual event, before joining Sonam Uttam Maskar and Vidarsa Kochalumkal Vinod to claim another silver in the team competition. Elavenil delivered a composed performance in the individual final, consistently producing scores in the high 10s to finish with 252.4 points. She remained in contention for gold until the final shot but eventually finished 0.6 points behind Japan’s Hinata Taichi, who won gold with a new Asian Games record of 253.0. South Korea’s Olympic champion Ban Hyojin took the bronze medal with a score of 230.4. Despite having already competed at two Olympic Games and one previous Asian Games, the Aichi-Nagoya edition brought her a milestone she had been waiting for, her first medal at a Games. “Today definitely is a very joyous day for me because this was my first Games medal. But when asked to assess her performance from a technical perspective, Elavenil pointed to one element that stood out, her triggering.“I think something that really worked out today was on the technical part would be my triggering. I mean, I had good triggering throughout my qualification, my finals,” she said. “I was able to take the shots when I wanted to.” Yet, interestingly, the same technical element also emerged as the area where Elavenil believes there is room for refinement.“There were times when I felt that possibly I could have delayed a bit and then taken the shot. So, my judgment towards my triggering could have been a little bit better,” she added.

The kit issue has also affected other Indian athletes, as two-time Asian Games shot-put champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor was replaced as one of India’s flag-bearers for the opening ceremony after he could not travel from the training base in Tsukuba because he had not received his official Games kit. Kabaddi player Pawan Sehrawat replaced him alongside Manu Bhaker. The rooms reportedly did not have enough space for the players’ cricket kit bags. The women’s cricket team, meanwhile, continues to stay in accommodation arranged through the IOA. The men’s tournament starts on Sep 24, with India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh entering directly in the quarter-finals. For India, the immediate priority is to complete the remaining kit deliveries before departure and prepare for the Japan T20I.

India’s men’s cricket team is facing kit-sizing issues ahead of its Asian Games departure, with some players yet to receive the correct jerseys. The delay follows a similar issue involving Tajinderpal Singh Toor, which led to a late change in India’s flag-bearer.

For Aashima Ahlawat, the Asian Games is the realisation of a dream she has carried since she first picked up a shotgun. But as the young Indian shooter prepares to make her debut at the continental showpiece, she is determined not to let the enormity of the occasion overwhelm her. Instead, Ahlawat wants to stay true to the process that has brought her to this point. The road to the Asian Games has not been entirely smooth. A disappointing start at the national championships left her under pressure heading into the Digvijay Singh Memorial Championship, where her performance would count towards Asian Games selection. “I had that pressure on myself to perform really well in the Digvijay Singh because that score was getting counted for our selection in the Asian Games,” Ahlawat recalled in an exclusive interview with WION. She responded by putting in the work, training hard in Bhopal and eventually winning the competition. The victory gave her an important confidence boost, although she knew the selection battle was far from over. “I had to limit myself because I had another two selection trials. So, I had to train for those also for my selection in the Asian Games,” she said. Once she secured her place in the Indian team, however, Ahlawat's confidence grew further. Her international performances had already shown her that she belonged at that level. That belief was reinforced at the Tangier World Cup in Morocco, where she shot 111 out of 125 in difficult, windy conditions but missed the final by just one target. It was a result that left her with mixed emotions. “Pretty much of both actually,” Ahlawat said when asked whether she viewed the result as a missed opportunity or evidence that she was closing the gap to the world's best. “I could have made the final easily.” But instead of dwelling on the disappointment, she chose to focus on the larger picture. “At least I am close and I am not far behind,” she said. That mindset has been particularly important during a season in which Ahlawat has experimented with her equipment. Following her Asian Games selection, she travelled to Italy for a training camp to test a new stock for her shotgun. The experiment did not produce the desired results. “We experimented a lot of things is what I would say and then now sticking to the basics,” Ahlawat explained. Also Read: Perth Scorchers coach Voges hails historic first foreign Big Bash game in Chennai She and her coaches eventually decided to return to the old stock, the same setup that had helped her secure Asian Games selection and produce more consistent performances. For Ahlawat, the lesson was simple: sometimes progress means returning to what works. Her preparations have also been helped by the performances of teammate Neeru, who has produced some outstanding scores this season, including a perfect 75/75 at Lonato. Rather than viewing a teammate's success as additional pressure, Ahlawat sees it as fuel. “If the one person in the team can do it, so even you can do it,” she said. “It kind of gives you a push.” The Indian women's trap team, according to Ahlawat, has a healthy competitive environment, but the shooters are primarily focused on themselves rather than comparing scores. “The competition is with yourself, not with your teammates or others,” she said. That philosophy also extends to the Asian Games. Ahlawat already has experience of winning a medal at the Asian Shooting Championship, giving her a taste of continental-level competition. She believes the Asian Games field will not be unfamiliar territory. “The same contenders, the same team is going to be in the Asian Games,” she said. But she is consciously avoiding getting too far ahead of herself. “I would much rather stick to my process and enjoy the games because I am the junior most in the team,” Ahlawat said. “I don't have very high expectations. I would just want to enjoy the process. Give my 100% and let's see what happens. It's not in my hands.” If she does reach the final, Ahlawat knows that success will require more than just technical ability. Shooting, she believes, is a combination of technical execution and mental control. “If you are not technically sound, everything goes into waste,” she said. “And then number two, you have to be calm to execute the technical things that you worked for in the camp and in the build-up.” She has been preparing for that pressure through meditation, biofeedback breathing exercises and eye drills designed to help her regulate her breathing and maintain focus during high-pressure situations. And while she may be preparing herself to remain calm on the range, Ahlawat admits that being calm is not exactly her personality away from it. “I am a very bubbly, socialite girl and I love to talk,” she said with a laugh. “It's very hard for my psychologist to make me stop talking.” In fact, she describes herself as ‘hyper’, a striking contrast to the stereotype of the quiet, intensely focused shooter. But underneath that bubbly personality is an ambitious athlete who has already set her sights beyond the Asian Games. For Ahlawat, the next major objective is Olympic qualification. “I have made the Asian Games team but now the next one is to get the quota for my country and represent India in Olympics and get a medal there,” she said. With Olympic qualification pathways beginning next year, she has her eyes firmly set on Los Angeles 2028. Before that, though, there is a first Asian Games to navigate. And Ahlawat has one particularly ambitious dream for her debut: a Games record.“I would love to make a Games record actually,” she said. “I have been training really hard and I have been trying to break that record also in the training.” She insists she is not chasing the record at the expense of her process. But if it happens, she knows exactly how much it would mean. “I mean it's my first Games and it would be great that if I could shoot really well,” she said. “I would stick to my process of course, but let's see if it happens, then I would be thrilled.” For now, Ahlawat's approach is uncomplicated: block out the noise, trust the preparation and give herself a chance to perform. The pressure of making history may be real. But for India's young shooter, it is motivation rather than a burden. “Nobody has done it. I have to do it this time,” she said. “I have to create history.”

The Indian families living in Japan have stepped up, offering to house Asian Games athletes should accommodation in Nagoya and Aichi Prefecture fall short, officials said on Saturday (Sep 19). Shukla, however, said the BCCI and the players were satisfied with the arrangements after reviewing photographs and videos of the facilities. “Whatever they (organisers) are providing, we are staying there and we are keeping a watch on what kind of accommodation is being given so that our players are comfortable. Definitely those are not five-star but good accommodation,” Shukla said at the send-off ceremony of the Indian contingent. “Whatever has been offered to our cricketers that accommodation we have got the photographs all the way and the videos also of that, so I think it’s comfortable. They (cricketers) will be going and staying there because otherwise the options were to make them stay in Osaka or Tokyo that’s far away.” Also Read: ‘I will not beg’: Lamine Yamal takes stand on Ballon d'Or race amid Mbappe, Dembele claims Shukla also confirmed that the Indian cricketers will be given individual rooms rather than being made to stay in twin-sharing accommodation. The accommodation issue had gained attention last week after multiple reports suggested that the BCCI was unhappy with the arrangements. The difficulty stemmed largely from a shortage of top-rated hotels in Nagoya, the host city for the Games. “The problem was that Nagoya didn’t have many hotels. Tokyo is one and a half hours by bullet train, so is Osaka. But in the Asian Games, all the participants are like families, it doesn’t look nice that some teams stay in Tokyo and some in Osaka so it has been decided that our players will live at hotel accommodation there (at Nagoya),” he added further. According to Shukla, accommodation was not the primary concern for the BCCI. Instead, the condition of the playing surface and player facilities had emerged as the bigger issue ahead of the tournament. “The big issue was the ground, wicket and dressing rooms. They (organisers) have addressed those things. Asian Cricket Council’s team has gone there and now they (ACC team) are satisfied with the ground, the wickets and dressing rooms, everything is fine.” Shukla said the accommodation arrangements were being coordinated by the Indian Olympic Association, the Asian Games Organising Committee and the Japan Cricket Association. “That’s being organized by Indian Olympic Association, Asian Games Organising Committee and Japan Cricket Association.

India's top ranking in the list highlights the challenge of doping the country faces. India has ranked in the top two for the most Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) in athletics between 2022 and 2025.According to AIU, India recorded 48 ADRVs (ranked 2nd) in 2022, 63 (ranked 2nd) in 2023, 71 (ranked 1st) in 2024 and 30 ADRVs (ranked 1st) in 2025.WION spoke to Dr. Sumiran Passey, a Sports Medicine expert based out of India's National Capital Region (NCR), and he conceded that 'doping is very tricky thing to navigate around.'
Does India have a doping problem among athletes?
Speaking on the issue, Dr. Passey acknowledged India having 'a huge number of athletes working on different levels who gradually progress to national levels,' but noted that "there are many loopholes where an athlete are not aware of what actually is doping and what actually is not dope doping. What substance are usually included in doping and what substance are not.""Also, World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) upgrades the list of banned substance on first of January every year. They add on what substance this year will be added to the existing list for doping."Now, when any athlete is training or injured, not everyone has an access to a sports physician. They go to their places, they meet a lot of local physicians or local specialist on for their issues specifically, and then athletes are put on medication. These physicians/specialists sometimes are not aware of that there is anything like doping or the substances or some substances of a medication is included in WADA doping list."So when an athlete takes these medication or the supplements just for getting cured, and go back to the sports where he/she is tested, then they found out to have broken the rules."Dr. Passey, however, agrees that "WADA list is huge. People cannot remember the list, but everyone can have access to the list. That way at least when they're prescribing they can just crosscheck from that list."
What the government is doing about it?
The Indian government had passed the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022 to be in sync with WADA's testing. The government data also showed that NADA increased testing from 1,899 tests (2021) to 7,466 tests (2024), with positive cases rising from 42 to 260, reflecting enhanced surveillance as well as persistent violations. When asked to Dr. Passey, he outlined that awareness, for both doctors and athletes, is the key to deal with the menace of doping"The knowledge of doping should be spread to all the doctors, the budding doctors as well as the existing one who are into practice through a lot of educational programs for them. And, the same training has to be given to every athlete from grassroot level onwards so they are aware that there's something like doping. The doctor who is prescribing anything should also be aware that there's something like doping."What it would is if at least if doctor doesn't know the athlete can always ask, please take care of the dope or vice versa. And, it's not just that the athlete is injured during because of a sports injury, it could be anything. Any small issue in any organ in the body can lead to a treatment and for that and the doping can be the outcome," he added. He also said that while "such programs (awareness) are already been conducted in such in big sporting authorities where the athletes have been trained, but they have to be a bit more frequent and they have to be so repeated that it's in ingrained in athletes.""It is also for anyone associated with the athlete like parents, coaches or even the friends who been travelling with them. It could be anyone and they all should be aware because doping just doesn't include that some substances is given, even a presence of of trace amounts can lead to doping."
