Former India head coach Ravi Shastri lauded Virat Kohli and said the batting maestro will be feeling much lighter after bringing an end to his long-standing century drought against Afghanistan in Asia Cup 2022 on Thursday. Kohli brought an end to a wait of 1020 days to notch up his 71st century in international cricket.

It was brilliant knock from the former India captain, who had headed into the tournament amid massive criticism over his lean patch. Kohli seemed to have found his lost mojo in the tournament as he scored runs consistently before shattering his century drought against Afghanistan on Thursday.

It was a brilliant knock of 122 runs off 61 balls for Kohli as he slammed his maiden hundred in T20Is and set up a comfortable 101-run win for India. Even though, Kohli never spoke about his century drought bothering him, Shastri said the India batter would be feeling five kilos lighter as the monkey is off his back now.

"You mentioned 1020 days, I can say 700 days I was in that dressing room when that happened. It's a long time. The monkey is off his back now. When you had astounding success like he has, when 70 hundreds come like this, then you go through a patch of one, two years, two-and-half years, two-and-three quarter years, and then everyday people start reminding - 'It's been that long'. He is human. It would have been eating him up. He would be getting up every morning, whether thinking of it or not, subconsciously being reminded," Shastri said on Star Sports.

"Today, I think he will be five kilos less. Don't ask me where the weight has gone from, five kilos less at least from the head. You could see from the last 40 runs of his innings. It was Virat Kohli. His trade mark shots, the confidence, the poise, the utter disdain for bowling is back. It took a long time coming," he added.

Kohli seems to have now rediscovered his form and will be keen to continue his purple patch in India's upcoming assignments ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia later this year. His return to form is crucial for India's chances in the tournament as Kohli is expected to play a big role for India in the World Cup Down Under.

Kohli has now joined the legendary Ricky Ponting on the second spot in the list of batters with most centuries in international cricket. He is only behind batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who remains the only man to have slammed 100 centuries in international cricket.

Gravitas: Fans clash after Pakistan-Afghanistan cricket match

Virat Kohli ended his international drought on Thursday (September 8) as India faced Afghanistan in their last Super Four clash before bowing out of the Asia Cup 2022 edition. Bing asked to bat first, a Rohit Sharma-less Indian team rode on Kohli's 122 not out (off 61 balls), who opened the innings with stand-in captain KL Rahul, to post a mammoth 212-3.

In reply, Afghanistan fell like nine pins in the run-chase by being restricted to 111/8 in 20 overs to lose by a whopping 101-run margin. Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned with 5 for 4 in his full quota of overs to stand tall but the Player-of-the-Match Kohli generated maximum eyeballs. Kohli's innings was laced with 12 fours and 6 sixes and his return to form is a huge blessing for Rohit & Co. heading into the 2022 T20 World Cup, from October-November in Australia. The 33-year-old Kohli's hundred is a huge sigh of relief for many Indian cricket fans, worldwide, who have been eagerly waiting for King Kohli to move past his ordinary run of form.

As soon as Kohli smacked an impressive pull over the fence to reach triple figures, the crowd -- at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai -- were sent into a frenzy. An elderly fan's unmissable reaction, present in the stands, went viral in no time as Kohli raised his bat and acknowledged the crowd after reaching his 71st international ton. Here's the video of the elderly fan bowing down to the Indian star batter:

In addition to this, one demerit point each has been added to the disciplinary records of the players, both of whom did not have any previous offence in a 24-month period. The incident occurred in the 19th over of Pakistan`s innings, when Fareed came up and made inappropriate physical contact with Asif after dismissing him and the batter reacted with an aggressive gesture of the bat. Both players admitted their offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for formal hearings. On-field umpires Anil Chaudhary and Jayaraman Madangopal, third umpire Gazi Sohel and fourth umpire Raveendra Wimalasari levelled the charges. Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player`s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

India ended their Asia Cup 2022 campaign with a big win over Afghanistan on Thursday evening (September 8). The biggest takeaway from India's consolation win was Virat Kohli's much-awaited 71st international century as the former skipper slammed a mouth-watering 61-ball 122 not out, laced with 12 fours and 6 sixes at a whopping strike-rate of 200.

Kohli hadn't scored a century across formats since late 2019. Since then, he contributed with a lot of crucial knocks but failed to get to the triple-figure mark. Against Afghanistan, India's star batter Virat went all-out, after settling in, as he opened the innings with stand-in captain KL Rahul in Rohit Sharma's absence. With his ton, the whole of India breathed a sigh of relief despite the national side's forgettable Asia Cup campaign. Rohit & Co. will now hope for Kohli to continue in a similar stead and go bonkers in the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, from October-November in Australia.

After mauling Afghanistan, Indian captain Rohit and Virat got together for a special interaction, on BCCI tv, where Hitman told his predecessor that his 'form is very critical to Team India'.

When Rohit asked about his brilliant ton, Kohli said, "I did not expect this. Even you mentioned after the match that nobody would have expected me to score a century, especially in this format. I am pleasantly surprised and I am grateful and honoured right now." Later in the chat, Rohit told, "Your form is very critical to our team. We all understand that. And also, you being around certain guys, does help a lot as well."

'Your form is very critical' - Rohit Sharma tells Virat Kohli as duo interact post latter's 71st int'l ton

The No. 1 ranked Indian team entered the Asia Cup 2022 edition -- being played in the shortest format as a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup -- as favourites and were expected to win the trophy for the third time in a row. Despite topping their group, India lost their opening two games in the Super Four round and bowed out of the multi-nation tournament with Pakistan-Sri Lanka making it to the final.

Thrashing Afghanistan by 101 runs on Thursday evening (September 8), India settled for the penultimate spot in the Super Four by signing off from the tournament with a total of three wins and two defeats (versus Pakistan and Sri Lanka, respectively). Losing to arch-rivals Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the last over, India have been slammed left, right and centre with many taking a dig at their preparations for the upcoming ICC event. Nonetheless, head coach Rahul Dravid came in India's defence and has reckoned that 'losing a couple of games doesn't make them a terrible team.'

"Irrespective of whether we would have won those games, you got to keep things in perspective. In T20s, the margins are so small. It's not that because we won that tight game against Pakistan, everything becomes perfect. We lost a couple of games, which had gone down on a wicket that wasn't easy to defend," Dravid said in an interview on Star Sports.

"We've taken the games down to the last ball. I'm not using that as an excuse. I still think we should have gotten over the line in at least one of those games. But we would have to still learn. We haven't been perfect. Just because we lost a couple of games, it doesn't mean we are a terrible team. We have been playing good cricket over the past 8-9 months."

"A couple of injuries and illnesses means your balance the team goes whack. In tournaments such as these, the margins become very small. The whole point is not to overreact, we can tend to go to extremes at some time. The kind of environment we want to create is very balanced," the former Indian captain-turned-coach added.

India will now shift their focus to their twin T20I series, at home, versus Australia and South Africa, respectively. After that, the Rohit-led side will head to Australia in a bid to win their second T20 WC trophy.

'Because we lost few games, doesn't mean we're a terrible team'- Rahul Dravid defends under-fire Team India

After a forgettable run at the Asia Cup, India will look to amend their mistakes ahead of the 2022 T20 World Cup, in Australia from October-November. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce the squad for the showpiece event sooner than later as many cricket boards have already announced their respective squads.

As per a report in the Times of India (TOI), the Indian team's squad for the upcoming ICC event is likely to be announced on September 16. Jasprit Bumrah's fitness is reportedly a reason behind the delay in squad announcement as the premier pacer is in rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru after missing out on the Asia Cup due to a back injury. Moreover, Harshal Patel is also working on his fitness after not being part of the Rohit Sharma-led national side in the Asia Cup where the Men in Blue failed to make it to the final.

Thus, Bumrah's fitness is eagerly awaited by the BCCI before announcing the squad of the one-time winners heading into the T20 WC Down Under. With the marquee tournament just over a month away, the BCCI selectors are still not worried about Bumrah's fitness as he is expected to be deemed fit.

“Bumrah has not been declared fit yet. He is going to be at the NCA this week before the selection. The World Cup is still over a month away. Therefore, his selection will happen considering that,” a BCCI source told TOI. Given India's ordinary bowling performances in the continental tournament, being held in the UAE, India will be desperate to regain the services of both Bumrah and Harshal. Many are also discussing Mohammed Shami's inclusion despite the senior pacer having not played a single T20I since last year's World Cup in the UAE.

Given Shami's experience, good run in IPL 2022 and the the current Indian bowling line-up lagging behind, the 32-year-old might be roped in. After bowing out of the Asia Cup, India will host Australia followed by South Africa in T20I series before boarding the flight to Australia. It will be interesting to see what all changes the Rohit-Rahul Dravid-led Indian team management makes for the mega event.

Rohit Sharma-led Team India's T20 World Cup squad likely to be announced on September 16: Report

Pakistan met Afghanistan in their Super Four clash at the Asia Cup 2022 edition, on Wednesday (September 7), at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah. A win for the Babar Azam-led Men in Green would've secured them a spot in the tournament final, with Sri Lanka. On the other hand, a victory for Mohammad Nabi-led Afghan line-up would've kept the tournament alive, with India also breathing for another day.

Eventually, Pakistan emerged on top in a humdinger of a clash as Naseem Shah -- playing his fourth T20I and who had batted only once prior to this -- smacked two sixes on the trot in the last over to help his side complete a tricky 130-run chase. Being asked to bat first, Afghanistan managed 129-6 but bounced back in style in the middle overs during the second half to reduce Pakistan to 110/8, from 87/3. Thus, they only had to get one more wicket going into the final over.

Meanwhile, Pakistan needed 11 off 6 balls with Naseem-Mohammad Hasnain in the middle. The 19-year-old Naseem hit two successive sixes to finish the run-chase in an emphatic fashion, with four balls to spare. His big strokes sent Pakistani fans into a frenzy as the Men in Green dugout charged into the middle with the players going bonkers. Here's the video of Naseem's sixes:

WATCH: Naseem's two successive sixes that led Pakistan to Asia Cup final, eliminating India & Afghanistan

Pakistan and Afghanistan were engaged in a humdinger at the Asia Cup 2022 edition on Wednesday (September 07). Playing at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah, both sides entered the game with a different agenda on mind. A win for Pakistan would've ensured them a place in the final, along with Sri Lanka, whereas Afghanistan had to emerge on top to remain alive in the Super Four.

Afghanistan's win would've kept India alive in the tournament as well, for another day, but Naseem Shah's last-over sixes sealed Pakistan-Sri Lanka final. Being asked to bat first, Afghanistan only managed 129-6 on a tricky surface with Haris Rauf standing tall for the Men in Green, returning with 2 for 26. In reply, contributions from Shadab Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed and finishing cameos from Asif Ali-Naseem took Pakistan home by a wicket in another last-over finish at the Asia Cup.

However, tempers flared in the 22-yard cricket strip as Asif and Afghan pacer Fareed Ahmad Malik -- who ended with 3 for 31 -- got involved in an ugly spat. The incident happened in the 19th over when Asif got out -- after hitting a six -- and Fareed celebrated in his face. Just then, Asif told him to stay away from him and even showed him the bat; as a warning that he would hit him. Afghan pacer Azmutullah Omarzai was quick to join in but as the incident turned uglier, umpires and more Afghan players came to separate the two whereas Pakistan's 12th man Hasan Ali asked the opposition side to remain calm.

The penultimate clash between Pakistan and Afghanistan in the ongoing Asia Cup Super 4 clash gave one of the most nail-biting finishes of the game. While it provided an “edge-of-the-seat” thriller to the general spectators, the fans of Pakistan and Afghanistan had it otherwise.

Soon after the match ended, as the Pakistan cricket team won the game effectively, quashing the hopes of the Afghanistan team to reach the final, Afghan fans started attacking the Pakistani fans—videos of which have since gone viral.

Anguished Afghanistan fans disrupted one of the stands and randomly started hurling chairs and bottles at Pakistan fans at the Sharjah stadium on Wednesday. The Pakistan fans then tried to evacuate quickly to their safety.

Asia Cup: Afghanistan fans hurl chairs at Pakistanis following crushing defeat. Watch video

Things went out of hand at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah on Wednesday evening (September 7) after Babar Azam-led Pakistan edged past Afghanistan by one wicket in a last-over thriller at the Asia Cup. In another riveting Super Four clash, Babar & Co. chased down a tricky 130-run target, after being reduced to 110/8, courtesy of Naseem Shah's twin sixes in the last over.

With this, Pakistan booked a spot in the final where they will face Sri Lanka on September 11 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. Meanwhile, Pakistan's win led to both Afghanistan and India being eliminated. As a result, the Afghan fans went berserk and created a huge ruckus by breaking chairs and throwing them at Pakistan supporters in the stands. The video of Afghan-Pakistani fans' unruly exchange went viral in no time.

Asia Cup 2022, IND vs SL live streaming: When and where to watch India vs Sri Lanka Super Four match?

Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar opined on Rohit Sharma and his captaincy as Team India crashed out of the Asia Cup 2022. After India's six-wicket loss to Sri Lanka on Tuesday (September 6) in the Super Four clash, the Men in Blue were on the brink of elimination and were finally ousted with Pakistan's one-wicket win over Afghanistan in a thriller on Wednesday (September 7).

Talking about India-Sri Lanka clash, Rohit-led India were asked to bat first and rode on the captain's 72 and contributions from Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and R Ashwin to post 173-8. However, it wasn't enough as fifties from the Sri Lankan openers Kusal Medis-Pathum Nissanka and captain Dasun Shanaka-Bhanuka Rajapaksa's finishing knocks ensured the Islanders a six-wicket win on the penultimate ball of the contest.

After India's back-to-back defeats in the Super Four, Akhtar commented on their disheartening performances. He feels Asia Cup debacle is a wake-up call for the one-time winners ahead of the 2022 T20 World Cup, from October-November in Australia. He also insisted there is no need for a change in captaincy despite heavy criticism of Rohit Sharma but highlighted some concerns for Team India.

"You don't have to change the captain again. Rohit Sharma was looking uncomfortable, he was shouting and screaming. There is uncertainty in the Indian camp. In hindsight, this is a good wake up call for India. Now, India know what their final XI should be, especially with the T20 World Cup coming up," Akhtar said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Young fast bowler Naseem Shah turned out to be the hero with the bat for his country as he slammed two consecutive sixes against Fazalhaq Farooqi in the final over to take Pakistan home in a thrilling run chase in their Super Four clash against Afghanistan in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 on Wednesday (September 07).

Defending a low-key total of 129 runs, Afghanistan nearly had the game in their bag when Pakistan required 11 runs off the 20th over with just one wicket in hand and two tail-enders out in the middle. However, number ten Naseem had other plans as he finished the game off in style with back-to-back sixes to take Pakistan into the final and set up a mouthwatering title clash with Sri Lanka.

Pakistan's 1-wicket win against Afghanistan has also confirmed defending champions India's exit from Asia Cup 2022. Afghanistan too have been dumped out of the race for the final after losing their first two Super Four games against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. They will now meet India in their last game on Thursday.

It was yet another action-packed game in Asia Cup as the low-scoring thriller went down the wire in Sharjah before Naseem pulled off an absolutely stunning victory for Pakistan. Chasing a mere 130, Pakistan got off to a poor start and were left reeling at 45/3 inside nine overs before Shadab Khan (36) combined with Iftikhar Ahmed (30) to add 42 runs for the fourth wicket and steady the ship for their team.

Pakistan lost the plot after Ahmed's departure in the 16th over as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. The Afghanistan bowlers did a stellar job to keep their team in the game till the final over with 11 runs to defend off the 20th. However, Farooqi, who had a great game until the final over, was smoked for two sixes by a tail-ender to end both India and Afghanistan's hopes of qualifying for the final.

Pakistan's victory confirms India's exit

India had started the tournament as the titles favourites and the defending champions lived up to their tag in the group stage with two straight wins in their first two games. However, an injury to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja forced them to change their team combination which saw their campaign getting derailed.

India suffered a five-wicket defeat against Pakistan in their Super Four opener before suffering yet another loss in a similar fashion against Sri Lanka in their next game to stand on the brink of elimination. Their chances of making it to the final were slim after the two losses and their fate lied in the hands of other teams.

India eliminated from Asia Cup 2022 as Pakistan beat Afghanistan by 1 wicket in thrilling Super 4 clash

Arshdeep Singh has not let the vicious abuse and brutal trolling on social media dampen his confidence as he looked in great spirits in India's Super Four clash against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2022 on Tuesday. Arshdeep was targeted by trolls on social media after he dropped a sitter in India's game against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday.

After he spilt the catch, India went on to lose the game by five wickets as Arshdeep faced horrific abuse on social media. Though he couldn't win India the game against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, he gave his all trying to defend seven runs off the last over as India went down by six wickets to lose their second game in a row in the Super Four.

When asked about how the players deal with online abuse and trolling, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma said the Indian team ignores social media. Rohit said there is too much crap happening online and lauded Arshdeep for bowling with confidence against Sri Lanka despite all the criticism after his mistake against Pakistan.

"Honestly, guys here don't look too much into social media, these days it is too much crap happening there," Rohit said in the post-match press conference after India's loss against Sri Lanka.

"Few losses here and there, a few games here and there, and one dropped catch, I do not think we look too much into it. So that shows, if he was down and out, if you are not mentally there, execution doesn't happen," he added.

Arshdeep was tasked to defend 7 runs off the last over against Sri Lanka on Tuesday. The young left-arm fast bowlers did well to drag the game to the penultimate ball but failed to stop Sri Lanka from chasing down the target. Nonetheless, he earned plaudits for his valiant effort in the game.

Praising Arshdeep for the character he has shown despite facing massive criticism after the Pakistan clash, Rohit said he has not seen many youngsters as talented and confident as Arshdeep.

"The reason being, it's pretty simple, he is very clear in his mind. He is a confident lad, I have not seen many guys like that in their early days, he is very confident, he wants to do well and he is quite hungry for success. It is a good sign, even Rahul Bhai will tell you, we are very happy with how he takes his game and approaches it," said the Indian captain.

India's chances of qualifying for the final of the Asia Cup 2022 are now slim after their back-to-back defeats against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. India can make it to the final only if Pakistan lose their remaining two matches and the Men in Blue register a big win against Afghanistan.

'Too much crap': Rohit Sharma says Indian players ignore social media amid Arshdeep Singh's brutal trolling

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes the Indian team should recall senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami in their T20 squad if they have to fix the issues in their bowling department ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. India's bowling let them down as Rohit Sharma & Co. suffered their second straight defeat in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 on Tuesday.

Indian bowlers struggled against Sri Lanka as they failed to pick up early wickets in the Powerplay and conceded runs heavily in the death overs as well. The likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya were all taken to the cleaners as India failed to defend the total of 173 runs in Dubai.

As India stand on the brink of early elimination from the tournament, Pathan has made a bold suggestion, asking the team management to bring back the experienced Mohammed Shami. Shami is currently not part of India's plans in T20Is but has been a regular member of the Test and ODI squad.

Pathan feels Shami is the best option India have if they want to improve their prospects with the new ball as he has the form and the experience to come and deliver straightaway.

“The team you chose, you didn’t use the sixth bowler, and you didn’t get the result you wanted from the other five bowlers. Now there is an opportunity here whether a bowler can come in the World Cup race who can help the Indian team. I feel if you are looking for only the new ball, you will not get a better option than Mohammad Shami," Pathan said after India's six-wicket loss against Sri Lanka.

“There are a lot of bowlers who have raised their hands, there are options, but they are young and inexperienced. If you see experience and form, Mohammad Shami is furthest ahead," he added.

Despite losing the first two games in the Super Four stage, India still have an outside chance of making it to the final if they can beat Afghanistan by a huge margin in their final encounter. However, Pakistan will have to lose their remaining two matches for India to stand a chance of qualifying for the final.

Shami is currently not part of India's plans in T20Is but has been a regular member of the Test and ODI squad. Also Read: Rohit Sharma explains why Deepak Hooda didn't bowl against Sri Lanka after questions over his selection Pathan feels Shami is the best option India have if they want to improve their prospects with the new ball as he has the form and the experience to come and deliver straightaway. Also Read: Bhuvneshwar Kumar has no pace: Pakistan legend Wasim Akram on India's death bowling woes against Sri Lanka Despite losing the first two games in the Super Four stage, India still have an outside chance of making it to the final if they can beat Afghanistan by a huge margin in their final encounter. However, Pakistan will have to lose their remaining two matches for India to stand a chance of qualifying for the final.

No better option than Md. Shami: Irfan Pathan on how India can fix bowling woes ahead of T20 World Cup

India's Asia Cup 2022 campaign has been derailed after back-to-back losses at the hands of Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Super Four stage of the tournament. After losing a last-over thriller against Pakistan on Sunday, India suffered a disappointing six-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka on Tuesday.

Defending a total of 173 runs, India's bowling woes were left exposed in the game as the pace attack was taken to the cleaners. Barring the two spinners - R Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal, who picked up four wickets between them, all other bowlers went wicket-less against Sri Lanka.

India's bowling has come under the scanner in the tournament but the team has struggled after an untimely injury to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja which forced the Men in Blue to tinker with their combination. Though India roped in Axar Patel as a like-to-like replacement for Jadeja, they played Deepak Hooda in their first two Super Four clashes.

As much as it was to strengthen the batting, Hooda's inclusion was as an all-rounder and he was expected to contribute with the ball as well in Jadeja's absence. However, that wasn't the case as Hooda didn't bowl a single over in the two matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, leaving many baffled.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma explained why Hooda didn't get to bowl even a single over against Sri Lanka and said he felt he needed to attack with his main spinners in the middle overs when India were looking for wickets. However, Rohit insisted he would have bowled Hooda had India managed to take early wickets.

"See, we have 6 bowling options but as I said we also have to try things with five bowlers as well. Today Deepak Hooda was there but Sri Lanka's two right-handers were set so I didn't think I could bring him on at that point because we were trying to get a breakthrough so I wanted our attacking spinners Ashwin and Chahal to bowl. If we had gotten a wicket early, I had planned to bowl Deepak Hooda," Rohit explained at the post-match presser.

"Six bowling options are always nice we know that and we have played with that combination. So when we go to the World Cup, that will be our thinking, to play with a combination which allows us to have six bowling options," he added.

Hooda was the sixth bowling option for India in the must-win game against Sri Lanka on Tuesday and could have been deployed when the Indian bowlers were being tonked to all parts of the ground by Sri Lankan openers, who added 97 runs for the first wicket and turned the game in their team's favour.

Many also questioned the decision to not bowl Hooda as he was included in the playing XI at the sacrifice of Dinesh Karthik, who has been in red-hot form as a finisher. With two defeats in a row, India's chances of making it to the final are dim but they still have a glimmer of hope if some results go in their favour.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli attain big feats in India's forgettable Asia Cup clash vs Sri Lanka

India are on the brink of early elimination from the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 after suffering a disappointing six-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai on Tuesday. It was a woeful bowling performance from the Men in Blue as they failed to defend the total of 173 runs to face their second defeat on the trot.

India have now lost their first two matches in the Super Four and even a victory in their final encounter against Afghanistan won't guarantee them a spot in the final. India looked in control of the game after captain Rohit Sharma gave them a solid start with the bat but they failed to capitalise and were restricted to 173.

The bowlers were expected to put on a fight but the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh all failed to impress as India's pace attack was taken to the cleaners. After his flop show in the death overs against Pakistan, Bhuvneshwar once again struggled in the 19th over against Sri Lanka.

The experienced pacer ended up conceding 14 runs off the penultimate over with Sri Lanka needing 21 runs to win off the last 12 deliveries. Pakistan legend Wasim Akram shared his views on India's death bowling woes and explained why Bhuvneshwar should not have bowled in the death against Sri Lanka.

Akram believes Bhuvneshwar, who is one of the finest swing bowlers around, has no pace and India needed someone who could clock 140kph and over in the crunch situation against Sri Lanka.

"Bhuvi is a very good bowler. Don't get me wrong but there is no pace. In T20, when you don't have pace, especially on this kind of pitch, he's a medium pacer, just maybe over medium pacer...135 (kmph). You need 140 (kmph) plus bowler like Jasprit Bumrah in the side," Akram said on Star Sports.

When he comes into the squad, you will have two of the best bowlers to bowl the last overs. And you need regular bowlers, who can bowl at the death. You can't pick up someone out of the hand. It's impossible to bowl, if you are not used to the pressure," he explained.

India's bowling has been pretty ordinary in the tournament so far and their woes were eft exposed after all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the tournament ahead of the Super Four stage. India are without the likes of Bumrah, and Harshal Patel in the tournament, and did not pick Deepak Chahar and Umran Malik among others in the main squad.

India's chances of qualifying for the final hang by a thread after their loss against Sri Lanka with just one game in hand. India can make it to the final only if they beat Afghanistan by a huge margin and Pakistan go on to lose their remaining two matches against Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has no pace: Pakistan legend Wasim Akram on India's death bowling woes against Sri Lanka

India succcumbed to yet another defeat in the Super Four round of the Asia Cup 2022 edition, on Tuesday evening (September 06) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. After losing to Pakistan on September 04 (Sunday), Rohit Sharma-led India were in a must-win scenario when they locked horns with Sri Lanka.

The No. 1 ranked Indian team were expected to go past the Lankans, despite the Pakistan setback, but ended on the losing side after failing to defend 173/8. Being asked to bat first, India rode on Rohit's 71, Suryakumar Yadav's 34, Hardik Pandya-Rishabh Pant's 17 each and R Ashwin's 7-ball 15* to post a competitive score, however, they failed to post anything over 190. In reply, the SL openers Kusal Medis-Pathum Nissanka's fifites and finishing cameos from Shanaka-Bhanuka Rajapaksa propelled the Islanders to a stunning six-wicket win on the penultimate ball of the contest.

India and Pakistan won't be able to square off once again in the Asia Cup final as the former have one foot on the flight back home. Pakistan, on the other hand, will be through if they beat Afghanistan on Wednesday (September 07). For India to miraculously qualify for the summit clash, they need Pakistan to lose their remaining two games. In addition, the defending champions will have to thrash Afghanistan on Thursday evening (September 08) to keep their hopes alive.

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh ripped into Team India's selection after their disappointing six-wicket loss against Sri Lanka in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 on Tuesday (September 06). India failed to defend a total of 173 runs as they suffered their second straight defeat in the Super Four stage of the tournament.

It was a fine all-round performance from Sri Lanka as they stunned the defending champions at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai. India got off to a brilliant start with captain Rohit Sharma going all guns blazing from the word go. However, the Men in Blue lost the plot in the middle and were restricted to 173 runs in 20 overs.

Sri Lanka rode on half-centuries from openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis before finishing cameos from Bhanuka Rajapaksa and skipper Dhasun Shanka to clinch the game in the final over with one ball to spare. While Sri Lanka's victory has all but confirmed their spot in the final, India are on the brink of elimination after the disappointing loss.

After getting off to a fabulous start in the tournament with back-to-back wins against Pakistan and Hong Kong in the group stage, India have lost their first two games in the Super Four. India will have to win big in their final Super Four clash against Afghanistan and hope others results go in their favour to stand a chance of qualifying for the final.

'Where is Umran, why Chahar wasn't there?': Harbhajan rips into India's team selection after Sri Lanka debacle

Arshdeep Singh isn't having the best of time at the Asia Cup 2022 edition. While he has been a part of the playing XI in all four games featuring Team India, the 23-year-old had an off-day versus Hong Kong and things have only gone south for him since then.

In India's Super Four clash versus Pakistan, Arshdeep dropped a simple catch of Asif Ali -- who slammed a fine 8-ball 16 and was one of the stars in Men in Green's successful 182-run chase in Dubai. In India's face-off versus Sri Lanka on Tuesday (September 06), at the same venue, Arshdeep conceded quite a few runs in the Men in Blue's defence of 173/8 and also couldn't defend seven off the last over.

Arshdeep has shown a lot of courage to bowl the final over in India's last two outings. Nonetheless, the young pacer couldn't prevent India's back-to-back defeats as they are nearing an early exit. After the thrilling Indo-SL fixture, a spectator crossed his limits and called Arshdeep a 'traitor'. Here's the video of the unfortunate episode:

WATCH: SHOCKING! Spectator calls Arshdeep Singh a 'traitor' after India lose to Sri Lanka in Asia Cup tie

India and Sri Lanka produced a thrilling contest in the Super Four clash at the Asia Cup 2022 edition before Rohit Sharma & Co. went down on the penultimate ball. Defending a competitive 174, Dasun Shanaka & Co. rode on the captain's finishing cameo, Bhanuka Rajapaksa's 25-ball 17* and fifties from Pathan Nissanka-Kusal Mendis to push India close to an early elimination.

Being asked to bat first, Rohit-led India rode on the skipper's 42-ball 71 and some useful contributions from Suryakumar Yadav (34), Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya (17 runs apiece) and R Ashwin's 7-ball 15 not out to post 173/8. In reply, SL's refreshing and confident approach took India by surprise with the game going down to the wire.

In the last over, Arshdeep Singh was given seven runs to defend and the 23-year-old speedster gave his all to keep the game alive. With two needed off as many deliveries, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant had taken a glove off in anticipation of a throw. While Shanaka failed to connect the second-last delivery, he ran and Pant missed a direct hit, which would've easily led to Rajapaksa's dismissal.

Following Pant's failed attempt, Arshdeep also tried to run-out Shanaka at the non-striker's end before missing the stumps as the Lankan batters completed two runs. Thus, SL beat India by six wickets on the penultimate delivery. After Pant's failed attempt, Twitterati was quick to criticise him and MS Dhoni began trending in no time. India lost to Sri Lanka in a must-win Super Four clash at the Asia Cup 2022 edition on Tuesday (September 06), at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. After losing to Pakistan in their opening clash in the Super Four round, Rohit Sharma & Co. were expected to bounce back over the eighth-ranked Lankans, however, Dasun Shanaka & Co. beat them by six wickets in a pulsating 174-run chase.

Opting to bowl first, Sri Lanka rode on early strikes from Dilshan Madushanka and Maheesh Theekshana before Shanaka and Chamika Karunaratne dented the run-flow in the end overs. Rohit's 41-ball 72 and some contributions from Suryakumar Yadav (34), Rishabh Pant-Hardik Pandya (17 runs a piece) and R Ashwin's 7-ball 15 not out took India to 173/8.

In reply, Kusal Mendis-Pathum Nissanka's half-centuries and Shanaka-Bhanuka Rajapaksha's finishing cameos took SL past the finish line in another last-over thriller in Dubai. With back-to-back defeats, after dominating the group stage, India have one foot on the flight back home. They, however, have a slim chance of making it to the final. Nonetheless, the Men in Blue need a lot of things to fall in their favour.

How can Team India still make it to the final

India will need help from all the other teams in the tournament to remain alive and somehow enter the final.

Sri Lanka: The defending champions will need the Islanders to beat Pakistan by a handsome margin. The Dasun Shanaka-led side are very much through to the final but can keep India alive with a big win over the Men in Green in their remaining fixture in the Super Four.

Pakistan: Babar-led Pakistan have two more games to go. If they win any of them, it will be curtains for India in the tournament. For India to remain alive, they need their arch-rivals to lose to Sri Lanka by a big margin and also succumb to the Afghans, on Wednesday (September 07), by a relatively close margin.

Afghanistan: The Mohammad Nabi-led side also have two games to play. They need to beat Pakistan at any cost for India's hopes to be alive. Later, India will hope to go past the Afghans by a big margin and somehow sneak into the final.

Ind vs SL: Rishabh Pant's reaction to Hardik Pandya's batting promotion in Asia Cup tie goes viral - WATCH

Young Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh has been subjected to vicious trolling and abuse online after dropping a sitter against Pakistan in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022. Arshdeep dropped a simple catch of Pakistan batter Asif Ali as the Babar Azam-led side went on to beat India by five wickets in the Super Four opener.

While some targeted him over his religion, his Wikipedia page was also edited to display fake 'Khalistan' links. While many former cricketers have rallied behind the youngster, the Indian authorities and political leaders have also gotten involved to contain the incessant trolling.

The Indian cricketer's parents recently revealed the left-arm pacer has not let any of the criticism affect him and is in fact laughing over the tweets and messages on social media over his dropped catch.

Despite being on the receiving end of horrific abuse, Arshdeep remains unfazed and has not let the trolling get into his head. Arshdeep Singh's parents reveal what he told them after facing online abuse over dropped catch vs Pakistan

After a defeat versus Pakistan, India faced Sri Lanka in a crucial Super Four clash in the Asia Cup 2022 edition on Tuesday (September 06). Riding on Rohit Sharma's 41-ball 72 and some contributions from Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and R Ashwin, they managed a competitive 173-8 but the Lankans impressed throughout the contest and defeated India by six wickets in a pulsating run-chase, with Dilshan Madushanka, Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka and captain Dasun Shanaka leading the charge. With another defeat in the Super Four, India have one foot on the flight back home.

Being asked to bat first, Rohit-led India lost KL Rahul and Virat Kohli for cheap. While Maheesh Theekshana dismissed Rahul, Kohli looked clueless and played a very poor shot off Dilshan Madushanka to depart for a four-ball duck. The onus fell on captain Rohit and he looked in his elements. He was joined by his Mumbai Indians' (MI) teammate Suryakumar Yadav as the two stitched 97-run stand with Rohit being the aggressor, smashing some big sixes en route to an impressive 41-ball 72 (laced with 5 fours, 4 sixes). His dismissal, however, brought the Lankans back into the contest with SKY (34), Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya (falling for 17 apiece) with the bowlers using the longer dimensions of the ground to good effect.

Chamika Karunaratne and Dasun Shanaka accounted for two scalps each and a combined bowling effort restricted India to 173/8. Madushanka was most impressive with a spell of 4-0-24-3. With the Lankans having completed two successive run-chases on the trot, they were favourites going into the run-chase.

In reply, SL openers Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka started off on a confident note. The Indian bowlers didn't resort to the change of pace as much as the Lankans and paid the price. The two openers complemented each other and found the boundaries at regular intervals as India failed to produce wicket-taking deliveries. At the halfway stage, SL were 89 for no loss. In the 12th over, Yuzvendra Chahal inflicted two wickets on the trot to bring India back into the game. R Ashwin also removed Danushka Gunathilaka but Nissanka's wicket changed the complexion of the game completely.

However, skipper Shanaka's 18-ball 33 not out and Bhanuka Rajapaksa's 17-ball 25* took the Islanders home in another last-ball thriller. Arshdeep Singh tried his best in the final over but some sloppy work on the field and few loose deliveries from time to time sealed India's fate, bringing them very close to an early elimination. They now face Afghanistan on Thursday (September 08) but will hope for the Afghan side to beat Pakistan on Wednesday (September 07) to remain alive in the contest by the barest of margins.

If Pakistan win even one of their remaining two games, India will stand eliminated irrespective of the result against Afghanistan.

Asia Cup: Sri Lanka beat India by 6 wickets in Super 4, push Rohit Sharma & Co. near elimination

India will lock horns with Sri Lanka in a must-win clash in the Super Four stage of the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai on Tuesday (September 06). After getting off to a brilliant start with two wins in a row in the group stage, India's unbeaten run was snapped by Pakistan in their Super Four opener on Sunday.

Pakistan produced a valiant performance as they chased down the target of 182 runs to hand India their first defeat in the tournament. However, the loss came at a crucial juncture for Rohit Sharma & Co., who will now have to win their remaining two matches in the Super Four to stand a chance of securing a spot in the final.

India will be looking to bounce back to winning ways when they take on Sri Lanka on Tuesday. The Islanders are heading into the clash riding high on confidence after beating Afghanistan in the Super Four opener. It was a high-octane clash between the two teams where Sri Lanka prevailed to move a step closer to the final.

However, they will face their biggest challenge of the tournament so far against Rohit-led India on Tuesday. Ahead of the all-important game, India once again face some major selection headaches as they aim to return to winning ways and salvage their campaign.

India might make a change in their bowling line-up against Sri Lanka as Yuzvendra Chahal's form remains under the scanner after he ended up conceding 43 runs off his four overs against Pakistan. He can make way for veteran R Ashwin in the XI or his place can also be taken by fast bowler Avesh Khan, who had missed the last game due to fever.

Ravi Bishnoi impressed against Pakistan and is likely to pip Chahal to retain his spot in the Sri Lanka clash. If India decide against bringing Avesh back, they can go with Ashwin and Bishnoi as the two spinners. The Men in Blue can also ring in changes in the batting line-up.

Deepak Hooda was not utilised with the ball against Pakistan, leading to questions over Dinesh Karthik's exclusion if the all-rounder was supposed to contribute only with the bat. India can be tempted to bring back Karthik to have extra cushion down the order and go with only five bowlers in the game.

India's predicted XI for Sri Lanka clash: Rohit Sharma (c), KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Hardik Pandya, Deepak Hooda, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan, Ravi Bishnoi/Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh.

Yuzvendra Chahal to be dropped? India's predicted playing XI for must-win Asia Cup clash against Sri Lanka

Rohit Sharma-led India are facing Sri Lanka in a must-win clash at the Asia Cup 2022 edition on Tuesday (September 06), at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. Being asked to bat first, India ended the first innings scoring 173/8 in 20 overs in the Super Four clash, with captain Rohit scoring a blistering 41-ball 72. His innings was laced with 5 fours and 4 sixes, at a whopping strike rate of 175.64, before he fell trying to take India's total beyond the 200-run mark.

Despite Rohit missing out on a century, the righj-hander's blitz took India to a competitive score, 173 for 8, and Hitman also joined Virat Kohli at the top of an elite list. He now has most 50-plus scores in the format along with his predecessor.

The entertaining knock versus the Islanders was Rohit's 28th T20I half-century. If the star batter's four hundreds are counted, Rohit has as many as 32 50+ scores in the shortest format, coming at par with Virat's tally. Interestingly, Virat had achieved his 32nd fifty-plus score in India's Super Four clash versus Pakistan at the same venue on Sunday evening (September 04).

Talking about India's performance, the likes of KL Rahul (6), Virat (0), Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and Deepak Hooda struggled to get going in India-SL face-off and only Rohit's 72, Suryakumar Yadav's 34 and R Ashwin's 7-ball 15 propelled India to a total beyond the 170-run mark in a must-win game for the defending champions. SL, on the other hand, have got off to a dream start and are inching closer to a memorable win over Team India.

Rohit Sharma joins Virat Kohli with most 50+ T20I scores during India's Asia Cup face-off vs SL

Virat Kohli attended India's post-match press conference after the Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue lost to Pakistan, by five wickets, in their Super Four clash at the Asia Cup on Sunday (September 04) in Dubai. After being India's top run-getter (44-ball 60), Kohli's efforts went in vain as Babar Azam-led Pakistan won with Md Rizwan (71), Md Nawaz's 20-ball 42 and late hits from Khusdil Shah-Asif Ali taking the Men in Green past the finish line.

After the high-voltage encounter, Kohli addressed the post-match presser and made a big revelation. When asked to comment on how he dealt with all the talks regarding his form, Kohli stated that he doesn't give a lot of prominence to advice he gets on television and revealed that only MS Dhoni -- among the ex-cricketers -- texted him post his Test captaincy resignation. He meant that such gestures mean a lot more to him than receiving suggestions in front of the whole world.

Ahead of India's Asia Cup Super Four clash versus Sri Lanka, Kohli took to his Instagram handle to probably explain his comments and took a cue from an inspirational quote. He shared a text stating, "Notice the people who are happy for your happiness, and sad for your sadness. They're the ones who deserve special places in your heart.' Kohli shared the same and wrote 'Word.'

At the presser, Kohli had said, "Let me tell you one thing: when I left Test captaincy, I got a message from only one person, with whom I had played previously; that was MS Dhoni. Many people have my number. On TV, people give lots of suggestions, people have a lot to say. But none of the people who had my number sent me a message."

"That respect [with Dhoni], that connection you have with someone, when it is genuine, it shows like this, because there is no insecurity with either of us. Neither does he [Dhoni] need anything from me, nor do I need anything from him. Neither of us suffers from insecurity. I can only say: if I want to say something to someone, I reach out to that person individually if I want to help. I mean, if you give the suggestions in front of the world, it has no value for me. If it is for my improvement, you can talk with me one-on-one, (tell me) that I genuinely want you to do well," the 33-year-old added.

Some former cricketers have already reacted to Kohli's recent comments. Former opener Sunil Gavaskar told India Today, "I don't know what the dressing room inside situation was with all these other players, I think, ideally, if he has named one person who got in touch, maybe the other people who didn't get in touch should have also been named.
