Senior pacer Mitchell Starc claimed his maiden Allan Border medal while Ashleigh Gardner became the first indigenous person to win the Belinda Clarke award, the top two honours at Cricket Australia (CA) Awards.

Starc was honoured for his strong performance in all three formats of the game. He is only the fifth bowler in 22 years to win the award.

Gardener also bagged the recognition for the first time. She is the first indigenous player to clinch the top gong in Australian women's cricket.

"I never dreamt of ever winning this award. When I took the call I was in complete surprise," Gardner told Channel Seven.

"I'm still in shock. To be the first ever First Nations person to win this award is super special not only for me but for my family and my people too."

"I've certainly grown up both on and off the field and maturing off the field has an impact on my game. All I ever want to do when I go out with the ball or with the ball is to win for the team," Gardener added.

The awards were decided by a voting process for the period 2021-22. The winners were decided by votes from players, umpires and media representatives throughout the year. The announcement came during the lunch break of the ongoing women's Ashes Test here. Starc, who took 43 wickets across all formats in the 12-month period, edged out all-rounder Mitchell Marsh by one vote.

"I'm not really sure what words to say at the moment. It was a huge surprise. To look at some of those names who have won it before, it will take a bit to sink in. Hugely honoured to receive this award," Starc said.

Gardner was Australia's third-highest run-scorer and fifth-highest wicket-taker across the voting period, scoring 281 runs at an average of 35.10 that included four half-centuries while also claiming nine wickets.

The big-hitting Marsh, who was the star of the T20 World Cup final last year, was named the Men's T20 Player of the Year after a tremendous 12 months.

Marsh, who scored 627 runs from 21 T20Is, received 53 votes, ahead of pacer Josh Hazlewood (29) and spinner Ashton Agar (26).

Beth Mooney won her second successive women's T20 Player of the Year award. With 13 votes, she finished ahead of Tahlia McGrath (10) and Gardner (6).

Batter Travis Head bagged the Test Player of the Year award courtesy a brilliant Ashes campaign that included two match-winning hundreds.

Australian stars Ashleigh Gardner and Asam Zampa&nbsp;headline a group of eight players who have signed up for Birmingham Phoenix in next year’s inaugural The Hundred competition.

Leg-spinner Zampa, who is ranked five in the ICC men’s T20 bowler rankings, and all-rounder Gardner, who won the ICC women’s T20 World Cup earlier this year, join a further six locally-based players from Warwickshire and Worcestershire in committing to Birmingham Phoenix.

Warwickshire batsman Adam Hose and fast bowler Henry Brookes, alongside Worcestershire seamer Pat Brown, have signed up for the Birmingham Phoenix men’s team. Warwickshire and Central Sparks batters Ria Fackrell, Eve Jones and Marie Kelly have also joined the Edgbaston-based outfit.

Birmingham Phoenix announced last month that Birmingham-born England all-rounder Moeen Ali will captain the men’s team in 2021 with leading New Zealand all-rounder Sophie Devine appointed women’s team captain.

They will be joined by fellow England stars and Birmingham’s own all-rounder Chris Woakes and wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones in the men’s and women’s squads respectively. Warwickshire and England men’s Test batsman Dom Sibley was also announced within the Phoenix squad last month.

Further players will be announced in the coming weeks.

Ashleigh Gardner scored an unbeaten 33 as Australia beat England by eight wickets to win the Women's World Twenty20 title on the Caribbean island of Antigua on Saturday.

The Southern Stars easily chased down England's total of 105 all out, polishing off the runs with 29 balls to spare in only 15.1 overs at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound.

The victory was their fourth world Twenty20 title and comes at the end of a tumultuous year in which the men's test team was rocked by a ball-tampering scandal that led to year-long suspensions for captain Steve Smith and his deputy David Warner.

Gardner was named Player of the Match after hoisting three sixes in her 26-ball knock, while captain Meg Lanning (28) scored the winning run.

Lanning said the title had been particularly sweet in light of recent disappointments at global tournaments.

"The last two World Cups really hurt and we had to change a few things and move it forward," she said, referring to their semi-final loss at the 50-over World Cup last year and defeat to West Indies in the title match of this tournament in 2016.

"The group embraced it and it was a very satisfying win.

"We did not have our best day in the field but the bowlers did a good job."

England batted first after winning the toss and opener Danielle Wyatt top scored with 43, but captain Heather Knight with 25 was the only other player to reach double figures as the team were bowled out in 19.4 overs.

Knight nonetheless had no regrets about her decision.

"We knew there would be dew, more dew than there was in the semis. We wanted to bat first though," she said.
