Head of China's largest insurance firm sentenced to life in jail amid crackdown on corruption

<p>Police have arrested a Vermont armed robbery suspect on Thursday who dodged capture last week after an extensive fast-moving chase, authorities said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Eric Edson, suspected of robbing a store in Burlington on August 24, escaped in a vehicle, then on a stolen bike, on foot and in a stolen sailboat. According to the police, he also impeded and attacked two cops and stole a sailboat and a few vehicles in his bid to evade arrest.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Vermont State Police arrested the 52-year-old suspect after receiving a tip on Thursday that he was on a kayak about 21 miles from Burlington.</p>

<p>Burlington Chief Jon Murad told AP news agency, "Because of the unusualness of Mr Edson's various modes of flight, from cars to bikes to paddle boards to sailboats to tractors, it's easy to lose sight of the fact that Mr Edson is a dangerous person."</p>

<p>According to the Burlington Police, on August 30, they witnessed a man passed out in a running vehicle, matching the description of an&nbsp;accused in a robbery a week before. When the officers woke him, he fled at a high speed, attacking both officers with the car, the police said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reports said later that evening, he fled the police on foot and a stolen bicycle. Then, he stole a sailboat on Lake Champlain. The Coast Guard tried to stop him, but till then, the sailboat foundered at the base of the lakeside cliffs.</p>

<p>A week later, he made his way to Franklin and Lamoille counties. Surveillance footage shows him driving a stolen dump truck on Wednesday and a John Deere tractor.</p>

<p>On Thursday, when Vermont police again sighted him on a kayak, he jumped into the river and swam to the southern shore. There, the state troopers and game wardens arrested him. Later, they took him to the hospital for an examination of his injuries, which he sustained while being on the run, police said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This suspect was an individual that displayed a propensity for violence and it certainly put the community, the public in a sense of unease," said Vermont State Police Sgt. Michael Filipek.</p>

<p>His prosecution is likely to take place on Friday. Police have also received an email asking whether Edson has an attorney.</p>

<p>Moreover, a senior police officer quoted by media reports said, “He was last seen using a treadmill at the gym and suffered an electric shock during the exercise. Based on the medico-legal case and post-mortem report, we have registered a case against the gym owners and the management."&nbsp;</p>

<p>A 20-year-old woman has been arrested on federal narcotics charges and is accused of selling the drugs that led to the death of actor Robert De Niro’s 19-year-old grandson, a law enforcement official said Friday.</p>

<p>The woman, Sofia Haley Marks, appeared in Manhattan federal court on Friday and agreed to remain behind bars until she requests bail at a later date. Prosecutors said they would oppose a request for her release.</p>

<p>Marks was arrested Thursday evening on three counts of narcotics distribution stemming from the sale of drugs to Leandro De Niro Rodriguez, the law enforcement official said. The official was not authorised to discuss details of the investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.</p>

<p>Rodriguez was found dead in his Manhattan apartment on July 2. His mother, Drena De Niro, announced the death on Instagram. Amy Gallicchio, an assistant federal defender who represented Marks on Friday, said Marks planned to hire a lawyer. Gallicchio declined to comment outside court.</p>

<p>Williams said the arrest “was critical because, as we allege, Marks knew the pills could kill, and she continued selling them anyway.”</p>

<p>The prosecutor said fentanyl was now the primary killer of Americans from ages 18 to 49. An estimated 109,680 people died from drug overdoses in 2022, including about 75,000 from fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.</p>

<p>“More than cancer, car accidents, or gun violence. It is a law enforcement crisis and a public health crisis. And we are doing everything we can to stop it,” he said.</p>

<p>Rodriguez’s cause of death remains under investigation, a spokesperson for the city medical examiner’s office said.</p>

<p>When Drena De Niro announced her son’s death, she responded to a question to her post by writing that her son died after “someone sold him fentanyl-laced pills.”</p>

We know the prospect of black-market employment is a significant attraction for migrants considering making dangerous and illegal journeys to the UK. Operations such as today send a clear message that we will not stand for this,” she said.</p>

<p>During the operation, which took place across the UK on Thursday, Immigration Enforcement officers arrested 105 foreign nationals found working without the right to do so during 159 raids on suspected illegal work establishments.</p>

<p>The arrests took place on commercial premises, including restaurants, car washes, nail bars, barber shops and convenience stores. Suspects were arrested for offences, including illegal working and possession of false documentation, with sums of cash also seized at some locations.</p>

<p>Of those arrested, over 40 were detained by the Home Office pending their removal from the UK, with the remaining suspects being released on immigration bail. It is also expected that a number of the arrests will result in a voluntary departure from the UK, the Home Office said.</p>

<p>“This result demonstrates the dedication and professionalism of our officers to take action against immigration offenders, as well as employers who are not complying with the rules. Our enforcement teams are working around the clock to deter immigration offending and help protect the public,” said Eddy Montgomery, Director of Enforcement, Compliance and Crime at the Home Office.</p>

<p>“Working closely with partners and agencies including the police and the National Crime Agency (NCA), we are tackling illegal work at every level. It is vital that we not only identify individuals in breach of immigration law but target the people smuggling networks behind this type of criminal activity,” he said.</p>

<p>While offenders of over 20 different nationalities were found to be working without proper visa rights to be in the UK, the countries involved have not been identified.</p>

<p>The Home Office said the operation builds on the ongoing work by Immigration Enforcement officers to clamp down on illegal working, which is a key part of the government’s approach to stopping the boats crossing the English Channel illegally. The operation is aimed at tackling illegal migration by breaking the business model of criminal gangs who use the offer of black market jobs as one way to draw people to the UK illegally, officials added.</p>

<p>In the first quarter of 2023, Immigration Enforcement teams claim they delivered 1,303 enforcement visits, a 57 per cent increase on the same period last year. And, since Sunak set out his plan in December last year to “stop the boats” crossing illegally into the UK, arrests are said to have doubled compared to the same period last year.</p>

<p>Otaibi is still being held without being convicted or punished. Previously, public demands for core women's rights, such as inheritance rights and the opportunity to leave a marriage with an abusive spouse, have been ruled seditious.</p>

<p>The case is the latest in a series of arrests and imprisonments of Saudis for using social media profiles to promote change or question Saudi authorities. Salma al-Shehab, a Saudi woman and former PhD student at Leeds University, was condemned to more than three decades in prison by a terrorist court for having a Twitter account and following and retweeting dissidents and activists.</p>

Her sister&nbsp;Fouz al-Otaibi&nbsp;was also accused of not dressing properly but was able to depart Saudi Arabia before her imprisonment. Maryam, another one of her&nbsp;sisters, is a well-known women's rights activist who was arrested, jailed, and subsequently freed in 2017 for challenging guardianship restrictions.</p>

<p>Khalid Aljabri, a Saudi expert and frequent commentator on US-Saudi relations, said: “Manahel’s case is an example of the hypocrisy and selective application of draconian laws by the Saudi government that hosts foreign Instagram models to promote tourism by posting pictures in swimsuits but jails Saudi women for posting photos without wearing Abayas.”</p>

<p>Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's government has frequently targeted Twitter users as part of a broader domestic and international repression campaign, which includes&nbsp;planting spies inside the company to extract confidential user data about anonymous Twitter accounts perceived to be a threat&nbsp;to the royal family.</p>

<p>The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested Dinesh Gope, the self-styled supremo of the proscribed People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), an agency spokesperson said on Sunday. The PLFI, which mainly operates in Jharkhand, is a splinter group of the Maoists.</p>

<p>Gope alias “Kuldeep Yadav” alias “Badku”, who had more than 100 criminal cases against him and was carrying a reward of Rs 30 lakh on information leading to his arrest, was held in Delhi, the official said.<br />
Gope, a resident of Khunti district in Jharkhand, was charge-sheeted by the NIA in a 2018 case related to the recovery of demonetised currency notes worth Rs 25.38 lakh from PLFI operatives, the spokesperson said.</p>

<p>He had been absconding for almost two decades. The NIA Ranchi branch is investigating three cases against the PLFI, which was previously known as the Jharkhand Liberation Tigers (JLT), the official said.</p>

<p>According to the NIA, the PLFI is responsible for hundreds of terror incidents in Jharkhand.</p>

<p>“More than 102 criminal cases are registered against Gope in Jharkhand, Bihar and Odisha. Most of these cases relate to murder, abduction, threat, extortion, and raising funds for the PLFI, a militant Maoist outfit formed in 2007 in Jharkhand and a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist),” the spokesperson said.</p>

<p>The official said the NIA had declared a reward of Rs 5 lakh for leads on Gope, in addition to the reward of Rs 25 lakh announced by the Jharkhand government.</p>

<p>On February 3 last year, an encounter had taken place between a Gope-led PLFI squad and security personnel in a forested area under Gudri Police station of West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.</p>

<p>Several rounds were fired in the encounter before the rebels sneaked into the forest and Gope managed to escape, the official said, adding he had been taking shelter at different places while making all efforts to re-establish the PLFI’s stronghold in Jharkhand.</p>

<p>“Gope used to extort money and execute attacks through his PLFI team members to terrorise businessmen, contractors and the public at large,” the spokesperson said.</p>

<p>The official said the accused, along with his associates, was involved in depositing the demonetised currency notes in a bank account and later collected them through extortion.</p>

<p>“The illegal money was then invested through banking channels and dubious shell companies in the name of close associates and family members of Gope,” the official said.</p>

<p>The NIA said the case was initially registered on November 10, 2016 at Bero Police Station in Ranchi and re-registered by the NIA on January 19, 2018.</p>

<p>“The police had filed the first charge sheet against four persons on January 9, 2017. NIA filed the first supplementary charge sheet in the case against 11 accused, including Gope. Subsequently, NIA filed the second supplementary charge sheet in the case on July 23 last year against five individuals and three private limited companies,” the spokesperson said.</p>

<p>The official said the NIA had also attached 14 bank accounts and two cars, along with cash and immovable property worth more than Rs 1 crore, in the case.</p>

<p>“The outfit used to lure unemployed youths by providing them motor bikes, mobile phones and easy money and after imparting training, used to equip them with lethal weapons to carry out terror incidents,” the spokesperson said.</p>

<p>The NIA said extortion is PLFI’s major source of income and the outfit has been targeting coal traders, railway contractors and various private entities involved in developmental projects in various districts of Jharkhand.</p>

<p>The Naxal outfit had also formed alliances with different criminal gangs in order to spread their nefarious activities and executed murders and arson in Jharkhand, the official said.</p>

<p>“Gope was part of a criminal conspiracy to channelize the extorted funds collected from the contractors/businessmen engaged in the developmental projects in Jharkhand. He was involved in investing these funds in dubious shell companies like M/S Palak Enterprises, M/s Shiv Adi Shakti, M/s Shiv Shakti Samridhi Infra Pvt. Ltd., M/s Bhavya Engicon, formed in partnership with other PLFI associates and his family members.</p>

<p>“The extorted money was also being transferred from Jharkhand to other places through a network of hawala operators,” the spokesperson said.</p>

<p>In July 2007, Masi Charan Purty, a renegade of the CPI-Maoist, along with several of his followers, had joined Gope in order to raise PLFI as a Naxal outfit, the official said.</p>

<p>Though Purty was subsequently arrested, the PLFI spread its activities under Gope’s command, the NIA said, adding the outfit used to extorted money to procure sophisticated weapons, including AK 47s and foreign-made rifles such as HK 33.&nbsp;</p>
