The blaze, resultant smoke and related damage at the Apple iPhone assembly facility run by Taiwanese firm Pegatron is likely to halt assembly operations at the plant for at least a week, sources told WION.

Situated within the Mahindra World City in Chengalpattu district (nearly 60 km from the capital city of Chennai) of Tamil Nadu, the Pegatron facility is capable of assembling almost 20,000 iPhones per day.

The models being assembled here are Apple iPhone 14 Plus and 15 Plus. Considering the average cost of these models to be $1000, the impact of not operating for a day would mean that $20 million worth of phones are not being produced.&nbsp;

The blaze that began on Sunday night is learnt to have been put out in a few hours after the incident was reported. Videos of the incident showed multiple fire tenders and an ambulance at the Pegatron facility.

Personnel working at Pegatron told WION that there are more than 9,000 of them involved in iPhone assembly at the factory and that production activity had not been carried out on Monday. It is understood that the factory works round-the-clock from Monday to Saturday with a schedule off on Sundays. The factory's 24-hour workday is split into three shifts- A (6 am-2 pm), B (2 pm-10 pm) and C (10 pm-6 am).

Nearly 1,000 personnel are learnt to have reported for work at the facility on Tuesday morning. However, the assembly operations were not carried out as the damage assessment and cleaning are underway at the facility.&nbsp;

"The blaze began at one assembly hall and from there the smoke spread to the other two assembly halls. Some of the high-tech, imported machinery have also sustained damaged," WION has learnt.&nbsp;

Owing to the above factors, it is said that the resumption of assembly operations could take a week or longer.

When requested for an official response, Pegatron replied to WION: "At the company's factory in Chennai, India, on the evening of the 24th local time, there was a spark incident, which is currently under control. There are no injuries, no casualties nor damage to other assets. The cause of accident is currently under investigations by relevant authority, and the incident does not have significant financial or operational impact to Pegatron Corporation."

<h2>Pegatron evades questions&nbsp;</h2>

However, Pegatron Corporation did not respond to WION's specific questions on the operational status of internal fire suppression systems, the number of personnel who were present at the time of the incident, the extent of damage to property, how the blaze and its aftermath affects assembly and whether Apple has been made aware of the fire accident. WION also e-mailed Apple, seeking an official statement. So far, there has been no revert from the American tech giant.&nbsp;

Notably, this is the second major mishap at a Tamil Nadu facility linked to the Cupertino-based tech giant and the world's largest tech firm. In December 2021, more than 150 women workers at the Foxconn facility in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, Tamil Nadu had fallen ill after consuming the meals provided at the staff dormitory.

Back then, the women had protested&nbsp;and blocked a crucial national highway. The issue was later taken up by the Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn, Apple and the Tamil Nadu Government. WION had visited and reported from the dorm rooms where the women workers had stayed.

Last year, in light of the issues connected with the Foxconn facility, Apple placed its iPhone contract manufacturer Foxconn’s Chennai unit on probation, over cleanliness and hygiene issues at their staff dormitory and dining areas. Later, after an audit and corrective measures by Foxconn and the intervention of the Tamil Nadu Government, the factory resumed its production activities in January 2022.

In the Steve Jobs Biography written by American journalist and author Walter Isaacson, it is said that the mercurial Apple founder used to make surprise visits to Apple assembly facilities and carry out inspections. During such inspection visits, he would put on a brand-new, white-coloured hand glove and wipe the factory work floor using the same. Even if the smallest amounts of dirt or dust were found on the glove, Jobs would go ballistic at those running at the factory. Such was the man's obsession with perfection and cleanliness, the book says.

Recurring mishaps at Apple's iPhone assembly facilities in India raise questions about the safety standards followed by the American tech giant and its Taiwanese partners here. It is also important to remember that the Indian Government takes pride in bringing Apple assembly lines to India and rolling out high-end tech products worth billions. Such incidents also bring to the fore the responsibility of relevant government agencies in conducting regular inspections, audits and holding the factory officials accountable for mishaps or lapses in compliance.

Amid geopolitical tensions with China, American tech giants including Apple have been looking to move more of their assembly facilities to India and southern Indian states have been taking the lead in luring the investors, predominantly Taiwanese contract manufacturers. Apple also pins great hope on the young and aspirational Indian customer who wants to flaunt tech luxury. In line with this, Apple CEO Tim Cook visited India earlier this year and also opened Apple-owned retail outlets in Mumbai and Delhi, both of these outlets are said to be performing brisk business.

Investors believe that Microsoft will see stronger growth and significantly lower china risk, thus the software juggernaut is bridging the stock market gap with Apple. With the maker of the iPhone at the center of a heated dispute with China, Microsoft has seen its stock price rise more quickly than Apple this month.

Microsoft gains ground on Apple in stock market race | World Business Watch

As investors recognise Microsoft Corp.'s superior growth and significantly lower China risk, the software behemoth is closing the gap with Apple Inc. in the stock market, according to a Bloomberg report.

This month, the shares of the Redmond, Washington-based corporation outpaced those of the iPhone manufacturer, putting its market worth closer to that of Apple, which is at the centre of a resurgence in tensions with China. Although there are still hundreds of billions of dollars separating the two businesses, Microsoft's leadership in industries like cloud computing and artificial intelligence make it more appealing to investors.

According to David Klink, senior equities analyst at Huntington Private Bank, "Microsoft has more of what the market wants right now, and given where we stand on the pair's growth prospects, we wouldn't be surprised to see it overtake Apple," as reported by Bloomberg.

"We have more faith in Microsoft’s margins, while the cloud and AI are growth areas that can stand the test of time over a decade. We don’t know if the iPhone can do the same," he stated. He also added, given Apple's services business, "it's difficult to make a bear case for them, but the bull case clearly favours Microsoft."

Microsoft last surpassed Apple in size in November 2021. Despite declining from a height of around $3.1 trillion, Apple's market capitalization is still more than Microsoft's, which is close to $2.4 trillion. The difference between Apple and Microsoft has shrunk to about $200 billion at one point last week as Microsoft shares have maintained constant this month despite the decline in Apple shares.

On Wall Street, Microsoft is frequently preferred over Apple. The company's recommendation consensus, which serves as a proxy for its buy, hold, and sell rating ratio, is significantly higher than Apple's. Almost 90 per cent of Microsoft experts favour buying the stock, compared to only 2/3 of Apple analysts.

Apple has experienced negative sales growth for three consecutive quarters, and if that trend continues—as analysts predict—it would have done so for the longest time in twenty years. According to statistics gathered by Bloomberg, while that's anticipated to change for the better in Apple's fiscal year 2024 and continue expanding in the following two years, the rate isn't anticipated to be quite as robust as that of Microsoft.

The maker of the iPhone is "looking like the old IBM," Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi wrote. IBM Corporation's "strength in mainframes and associated account control once seemed unassailable," Sacconaghi said, cautioning that "Apple's key risks are that iPhone is replaced by a new computing/internet access platform."

AI, the year's trendiest investing topic, may be that new something. Needham said that Apple might drop to fourth place among US equities, behind Alphabet Inc., Amazon.com Inc., and Microsoft, since it "is not a core beneficiary of the trend towards generative AI." Separately, Rosenblatt Securities warned that Nvidia Corp., the chipmaker that has so far benefited the most from the AI boom but is currently smaller than Apple, could challenge Apple's throne. Nvidia Corp. is currently less than half the size of Apple.

Despite indications of strong demand, there were few shocks in Apple's most recent gadget launches. New phones from Huawei Technologies Co. may pose a competitive challenge amid worries about government limitations on iPhones in China, which account for about a quarter of Apple's revenue. Apple’s efforts to build semiconductors internally may be taking longer than anticipated. Microsoft's president, Brad Smith, told lawmakers this week that only about 2 per cent of their revenue comes from China.

According to Tim Ghriskey, senior portfolio strategist at Ingalls &amp; Snyder, "consistency is worth a lot when considering a company's valuation, and Microsoft, because of its consistency and projected growth rate, has an advantage over Apple right now." "I like both, but Apple has a higher risk," he added.

The returns of tech stocks broken down by size have dramatically diverged as a result of the great outperformance by Wall Street's largest stocks. In 2023, the S&amp;P 500 tech sector index increased by 38 per cent, whereas an analogous mid-cap index only increased by 16 per cent. Meanwhile, the small-cap tech stock index has increased by less than 11 per cent.

According to Tim Ghriskey, senior portfolio strategist at Ingalls & Snyder, "consistency is worth a lot when considering a company's valuation, and Microsoft, because of its consistency and projected growth rate, has an advantage over Apple right now." "I like both, but Apple has a higher risk," he added. The returns of tech stocks broken down by size have dramatically diverged as a result of the great outperformance by Wall Street's largest stocks. In 2023, the S&P 500 tech sector index increased by 38 per cent, whereas an analogous mid-cap index only increased by 16 per cent. Meanwhile, the small-cap tech stock index has increased by less than 11 per cent. (With inputs from Bloomberg) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Apple has told its tech support staff to stay silent if&nbsp;they are asked about the issue of iPhone 12 radiation&nbsp;in France, reported Bloomberg. France has already banned the sale of iPhone 12 after a regulator said that the smartphone breached European standards of radiation exposure.

Bloomberg report said that the tech giant told staff to say that they had nothing to share on this matter in case&nbsp;customers ask about the radiation issue. It was also reported that Apple instructed employees to reject return or exchange requests for devices bought over two weeks ago. The employees were reportedly told to tell customers that products undergo rigorous testing, if&nbsp;a customer asks about safety of the phones.

The sale of iPhone 12 was banned in France after Agence Nationale des Frequences (ANFR), the radiation watchdog, said earlier this week that the smartphone's&nbsp;Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) was higher than legally allowed.

SAR is a measure of the rate of radiofrequency absorbed by the body of a smartphone user while using the equipment.

The ANFR said that if Apple didn't resolve the issue, it would be forced to order recall of these smartphones.

Apple initially disputed the conclusions drawn by the watchdog and said that iPhone 12 was certified by multiple international bodies as being compliant with global radiation standards.

However, on Friday (September 15) Apple appeared to relent as it announced that it would release a software update to address the radiation issue.

The announcement was met with a positive reaction from the French government. It said that the software update will be swiftly tested and if the issue is sorted, sales of the model would be allowed to continue.&nbsp;

"The ANFR (French regulator) is preparing to quickly test this update," said France's Digital Affairs Ministry. Jean Noel Barrot, the Digital Affairs Minister has been in contact with Apple over past few days over the radiation issue.

Apple, renowned for its cutting-edge gadgets and groundbreaking innovations, is once again making headlines in the tech world. This time, it's all about the iphone and the exciting shift in its charging ports. Those in China who want to purchase Apple's new iPhone 15 Pro Max may have to wait for 4-5 weeks before they get the smartphone, revealed company website on Friday (September 15). Apple has started taking pre-orders and there are early signs of strong demand.

If a buyer wants to buy iPhone 15 Pro, the wait is slightly shorter at 2-3 weeks. The company said previously that it could deliver iPhone 15 by September 22, the day the phone goes on sale in stores.

For iPhone 15 Plus, the wait in China is of 8 working days.

Reuters reported that more than 3.4 million reservations were placed on JD.com in all for the four models.

Ivan Lam, senior analyst at Counterpoint was quoted&nbsp;by Reuters as saying that it was reasonable to expect these volumes on JD.com as it is one of Apple's biggest sale channels in China.

"Since the decline of Huawei, the iPhone has been able to attract a massive number of consumers in the more than $600 segment. The new iPhone 15 series, especially the Pro series, will be a good choice for the installed base who are using iPhone 11/12 and looking for an update replacement," he said.

"However, there's no doubt that the new Mate 60 series will be a challenge to the iPhone this year."

For iPhone, China is its third largest market. Performance of iPhone 15 is going to be closely watched especially after former rival Huawei's launch of new smartphone late last month. The smartphone comes with an advanced chip.

Huawei could make a comeback with its Mate 60 series, according to analysts. The Chinese tech firm was once the world's biggest smartphone maker but US export controls decimated its business.

Last week, the Chinese state media reported that better-than-expected sales of Mate 60 series has led Huawei to up its second-half shipment targets by 20 per cent. It's forecast for overall new smartphone shipments in 2023 is at least 40 million units.

China: With signs of strong orders, Apple delays high-end iPhone 15 models

Accepting the diktat by the European Union (EU), Apple on Tuesday (September 12) during its annual 'Wonderlust' event, announced that its new iPhone lineup was returning to&nbsp;a universal charging port.&nbsp;

"USB-C has become a universally accepted standard. So we're bringing USB-C to iPhone 15," said Kaiann Drance, Apple's vice president of iPhone Marketing&nbsp;at a launch event.

"Now the same cable can charge Mac, iPad, iPhone, and even the new AirPods Pro with USB-C on the case," the company added.&nbsp;

Up until now, users were charging their iPhones&nbsp;using the company's proprietary&nbsp;Lightning Port technology while Android-based devices used USB-C chargers.&nbsp;

However, it was in October last year that the EU Parliament&nbsp;approved new rules that make sure a universal charging port is introduced for all electronic gadgets (mobile phones, tablets, cameras, e-readers, earbuds and other devices) by 2024.&nbsp;

The ruling was prompted after complaints from both iPhone and Android about having to switch to different chargers whenever changing devices.

At a time when the iPhone manufacturer is facing more difficulties in China and is seeking to strengthen its supply chains abroad, tech giant Qualcomm announced on Monday that it has reached an agreement with Apple to provide 5G processors until at least 2026.&nbsp;

Despite switching all of its laptops to using chips of its own design, the transaction shows that Apple is not rushing to release its own modem and is prolonging a partnership worth billions of dollars to Qualcomm for at least three years beyond what was anticipated.

Early afternoon trading saw a 4 per cent increase in Qualcomm shares. Qualcomm&nbsp;is a pioneer in the design of modem chips, which link mobile devices to mobile data networks. Apple stock increased by 0.5 per cent.

Headquartered in San Diego, California, Qualcomm saw the conclusion of a protracted legal dispute with Apple, following which, the two firms subsequently agreed to a chip supply agreement in 2019.

The iPhones that Apple is anticipated to introduce on Tuesday would be the last batch of phones to be launched under that supply agreement, which shall expire this year.

As per the agreement made on Monday, Qualcomm will provide Apple with semiconductors for new phones released year up until 2026. When asked about the deal’s worth, Qualcomm merely said that it was “similar” to a previous one.

UBS analysts predicted that Qualcomm would sell $7.26 billion worth of chips to Apple in 2022 in a research note published on August 3.

A patent licencing agreement Qualcomm finalised with Apple in 2019 is still in effect, according to Qualcomm. The companies have the opportunity to extend the agreement for an additional two years until 2025.

Reuters quoted Susannah Streeter, the head of money and markets at Hargreaves Lansdown, as saying, “At a time when Apple is running into increasing challenges in China, reinforcing its supply chains elsewhere is a priority, and it appears the company is rolling back or at least delaying plans to go at it alone in more areas with its own chip production.”

Apple spent $1 billion to purchase Intel’s modem section in 2019, while the company is in the process of developing its own modem technology. It is unknown how rapidly Apple intends to increase the use of its own chips.

By 2026, barely a fifth of Apple’s iPhones would utilise Qualcomm’s chips, the company stated on Monday in a statement.

Although all of the iPhone 14 models announced last year had Qualcomm modems, Qualcomm made a similar prediction regarding its relationship with Apple in 2021 that turned out to be unduly conservative.

Moreover, Akash Palkhiwala, the chief financial officer of Qualcomm, revised his projections for the 2023 iPhones that will be made public this week last year, stating that he anticipated that the “vast majority” of them will come equipped with Qualcomm modems.

At a time when the iPhone manufacturer is facing more difficulties in China and is seeking to strengthen its supply chains abroad, tech giant Qualcomm announced on Monday that it has reached an agreement with Apple to provide 5G processors until at least 2026.

At a time when the iPhone manufacturer is facing more difficulties in China and is seeking to strengthen its supply chains abroad, tech giant Qualcomm announced on Monday that it has reached an agreement with Apple to provide 5G processors until at least 2026. Qualcomm is a pioneer in the design of modem chips, which link mobile devices to mobile data networks. Reuters quoted Susannah Streeter, the head of money and markets at Hargreaves Lansdown, as saying, “At a time when Apple is running into increasing challenges in China, reinforcing its supply chains elsewhere is a priority, and it appears the company is rolling back or at least delaying plans to go at it alone in more areas with its own chip production.” Apple spent $1 billion to purchase Intel’s modem section in 2019, while the company is in the process of developing its own modem technology. Apple to receive 5G chips from Qualcomm till 2026 under new deal: Report

Following reports that China, one of the company’s major markets, had prohibited government personnel from using iPhones as Beijing intensifies its continuing tech war with the US, Apple shares plummeted during after-hours trading on Thursday, following the company’s greatest single day loss in a month, according to a report by Forbes.

In after-hours trading, Apple shares were down 2.62 per cent at 5:01 a.m., according to the report. This fall came after a 3.6 per cent drop in New York on Wednesday, which Bloomberg reports was Apple's greatest single-day share price drop in just over a month. This decline defied a general upward trend for tech equities this year, during which the business had increased by 46 per cent.

It follows Wednesday’s claims that China had forbidden central government employees from using or bringing iPhones into the office, as well as this week’s launch of a new smartphone from Chinese company Huawei that may pose a threat to Apple’s dominant market share.

Presently, Apple is widely regarded in China, but it is facing criticism on several fronts. The unveiling of a high-speed competitor gadget from Huawei and the rumoured ban on iPhones in government buildings are two actions that could spell disaster. It might hurt sales in a crucial market that has been vital to the business’ success lately and contributed to the $74 billion in income it brought in previous year.

Apart from sales, Apple is at risk due to its dependence on Chinese manufacturing (nearly all major devices are made there), and the possible hostility from Beijing signalled by the ban could significantly impede its worldwide supply chain.

It is unclear how strictly Beijing’s iPhone ban would be enforced by the authorities. The Wall Street Journal, which broke the news of the prohibition, noted that it was unknown how broad it would apply and that it was an enlargement of a previous limitation that had been in effect at a small number of government agencies for years. While noting that certain central government authorities had received similar instructions, it stated that the order's reach was unknown.

Bloomberg hinted at a far wider extent when it confirmed the news on Thursday; both publications cited unnamed persons knowledgeable with the situation. According to Bloomberg, restrictions would apply to “a plethora of state-owned enterprises and other government-controlled organisations,” a designation that may include a broad range of institutions given Beijing’s influence over society, government, and the economy.

Shares of Apple fell by 2.9% on Thursday following reports that China plans to expand a ban on the use of iPhones to government-backed agencies and companies.

Apple lost $200 billion in two days after reports of iPhone ban in China

China's government has broadened its ban on iPhones and Apple products, impacting local government workers and state-owned companies.

This move comes as part of Beijing's effort to reduce its dependence on US&nbsp;technology amid escalating geopolitical tensions between the US&nbsp;and China, as reported by the Guardian.

<h2>Expanding the iPhone ban</h2>

The initial ban on iPhones in government workplaces began to gain momentum when several agencies instructed employees not to bring their iPhones to work. Bloomberg reported that this ban was expected to expand further, extending to state-owned companies.

Nikkei reported that some state-owned companies are prohibiting employees who work with trade secrets from bringing their iPhones, Apple Watches, or AirPods to work starting next month. This move underscores China's concerns about what it deems the security risks posed by using Apple devices.

<h2>Reducing dependence on US&nbsp;tech</h2>

China's actions are seen as a response to its growing unease with dependence on US technology. The ban on iPhones and Apple products reflects Beijing's broader strategy of reducing reliance on foreign-made tech products.

The news of the expanded iPhone ban had a notable impact on Apple's stock prices. Apple shares dropped more than six per cent over two days, though they rebounded slightly on the third day. China represents a significant market for Apple, generating nearly a fifth of its revenue. Despite these losses, analysts like Erik Woodring believe that the impact on Apple's revenue will be limited to around four per cent.

<h2>Apple's production in China</h2>

Apple's production remains heavily centred&nbsp;in China, with approximately 90 per cent of its products manufactured in the country. Key suppliers like Foxconn, with its massive factories in China, play a crucial role in Apple's supply chain. However, due to political instability and pandemic disruptions, Apple has accelerated plans to diversify production to other countries, including Vietnam and India.

China expands ban on iPhones, Apple products amid geopolitical tensions with US

US tech giant Apple's shares dropped sharply for the second consecutive day on Thursday, leading to its market value falling by nearly $200 billion. The rout in Apple shares was triggered by reports that China planned to extend a ban on the use of iPhones to government-backed organisations and state corporations.

While Apple fell seven&nbsp;per cent in just two days, shares of other tech companies like Qualcomm, Micron Technology, Microsoft and Nvidia too declined as&nbsp;fears of repercussions gripped the broader US technology sector.

The news of a potential ban by China spooked investors as they began selling off a variety of assets, including semiconductors, mega-cap technologies, and Chinese equities traded in the United States.&nbsp;

Apart from&nbsp;Apple, several other American technology firms that depend on sales and manufacturing in China now fear that they may be impacted by Beijing's potential ban at some point of time. &nbsp;

Apple relies heavily on the Chinese market and infrastructure for production. But slumping demand for due to the prolonged real estate market crisis has hit Apple's revenue margins.&nbsp;

Apple's woes have been compounded by a rise in the US Treasury rates, as investors sell bonds on expectations that the Federal Reserve may have to up its battle against inflation.

Meanwhile, taking aim at Apple's exclusive tap-to-pay system, the top consumer watchdog in the United States cautioned tech companies against being unduly restrictive in providing access to payment applications, as it writes regulations surrounding the sharing of customer financial data.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau warned that Apple and Alphabet's Google Pay, which together control the vast majority of the mobile device tap-to-pay market, might limit final users' choice.

The bureau plans to issue open banking laws in the next months. These regulations would effectively control how financial institutions disclose customer data.

Tech giants including Apple, Facebook owner Meta and TikTok parent ByteDance will now face the new and toughest-ever EU restraints under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) on the ways they conduct their respective businesses. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The European Commission, the European Union's most powerful body, unveiled a list on Wednesday (September 6), naming 22 "core platform" services belonging to six big US tech players designated as "gatekeepers": Google parent Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft and China's ByteDance. &nbsp;

Brussels is working through a legislative plan to construct more stringent rules for big tech, asserting that it needs to safeguard European consumers online.

The move has reportedly also been taken to create competition in the market which is primarily dominated by the US tech giants.

Services that will be impacted by the stricter laws include Apple's App Store; Meta's Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp; Google's YouTube video platform and Chrome browser; as well as Apple's Safari. Operating systems from Apple, Microsoft, Google and Alphabet's Google Maps, Play and Shopping will also be affected by the new law.

<h2>'Gatekeepers'</h2>

Targeting the world's leading tech companies' market influence, the Digital Markets Act (DMA) is one of the world's most stringent pieces of legislation which is aimed at making it more manageable for users to move between contending services, such as social media platforms, internet browsers and app stores.

The EU Commission specified 22 services of the top tech companies as "gatekeepers" of online services.

This means that such businesses will now have to make their messaging apps interoperate with competitors and let users decide as to which applications to pre-install on their devices.

Also, under the DMA, the services will have to take the user's direct consent before tracking their activities for advertising purposes.

The firms have six months to comply.&nbsp;

<h2>Apple reacts</h2>

Apple, while expressing concerns over the tough new EU curbs, spoke&nbsp;Wednesday about&nbsp;the risks posed by the landmark digital markets law.

"We remain very concerned about the privacy and data security risks the DMA poses for our users. Our focus will be on how we mitigate these impacts," &nbsp;Apple said in a statement, referring to the EU Digital Markets Act.

Microsoft released a statement accepting its designation as gatekeeper, while also welcoming the commission's decision to open a probe into a possible exemption of Microsoft's services Bing, Edge and Microsoft Ads from the DMA.

Facebook parent company Meta said it was assessing the commission's designation.

EU hits Big Tech giants including Apple, Amazon and Meta with tougher market curbs

After months of pressure and pushback, the United States-based tech giant, Apple, is reportedly set to shift its iPhone charging port from a lighting to USB-C, as the standard charging method for its upcoming iPhone 15 series.&nbsp;

<h2>Apple announces when the change might happen</h2>

A report by Bloomberg said Apple has confirmed September 12 as the date for its iPhone 15 event as the company also aims to overhaul device production with 3D printers.&nbsp;

Although, if the company had its way it would stick to its current Lightning connector for a few more years before it could phase out ports on its smartphones altogether.

However, the European Union forced its hand after the 27-nation bloc’s parliament approved new rules making it compulsory for tech companies to ensure a universal charging port is introduced for electronic gadgets like mobile phones, tablets, cameras, e-readers, earbuds and other devices by the end of next year.&nbsp;

The motion passed with 602 votes in favour and 13 against it, back in October 2022. Accordingly, the vote by the EU parliament confirms the previous agreement of making USB-C chargers used by Android-based devices the standard for the entire continent.&nbsp;

Succinctly put, all devices in the EU will have to carry the same charging port, in a bid to reduce e-waste. According to Bloomberg, when the company introduces its iPhone 15 later this month, USB-C connectors will appear on its four new phone models, as well as the AirPods Pro.&nbsp;

Notably, this is the second time in Apple’s history that the company would replace its charging port for its iPhones after it ditched the 30-pin Dock connector nearly a decade ago for its iPhone 5.&nbsp;

<h2>Users to benefit from the shift</h2>

At the upcoming event, Apple will reportedly also hail the shift to USB-C connectors as a major win for customers. In line with the new rule, users will now be able to use a single charging cable for several Apple devices like iPhones, Macs and iPads.
