<p>Superstar Mohanlal on Monday said he is confident that the upcoming sequel of 'Drishyam'&nbsp;will replicate the success of the 2013 crime drama, which was a hit across multiple languages and changed the way "world looks at Malayalam cinema".<br />

The film was remade in Hindi with Ajay Devgn filling in for Mohanlal's Georgekutty and Tabu playing the Inspector General of Police, originally essayed by Asha Sarath.<br />
<br />
It was also the first Indian film to be remade in Chinese (Mandarin) language, Mohanlal said at a virtual press conference of 'Drishyam 2'.<br />
<br />
"'Drishyam' first part was a huge success, not just in Malayalam but also in multiple languages. It was also the first Indian movie to be remade in Chinese. It received critical as well as commercial success and changed the way the world looks at Malayalam cinema," the superstar said.<br />
<br />
"There is definitely a lot of pressure on making the sequel of such a movie but we are very confident that this film will be loved and well received by the audience. We are now ready to take the legacy forward and achieve a new cinematic milestone," he added.<br />

'Drishyam 2', whose trailer crossed over nine million in 48 hours of its debut, is all set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on February 19.<br />

Has this period unlocked a new side for audiences bred and buttered on cheap thrills, cardboard cut-out stars &amp; armpit rhetoric designed for instant gratification? &nbsp;Do all of this translate to the end of the blissed-out honeymoon of the superstars affair with their bhakts? The nine-month interval however had one dramatic fallout; It allowed OTT, the streaming platform to usurp this space, offering sensationally varied, quality content that can be comfortably and securely enjoyed in the comforts of their home! For the traditional fans of the Bollywood-manufactured masala, this template started out by appearing to be weirdly different. No high-pitched razzle-dazzle, dance, romance, glamour, tension, dialogue-baazi ignited by sexy, larger-than-life stars ... but soon [due to a lack of option, curiosity & conditioning] and after a longish session of hide n’ seek, the OTT menu grew addictive. Over time, the Bollywood product seemed to move into soft focus, with fresh and absorbing OTT content slowly romancing their mind. Do all of this translate to the end of the blissed-out honeymoon of the superstars affair with their bhakts? Is this new and exciting version of David versus Goliath the latest show in town? Tempting as it is to be carried away with the OTT-wave, perspective is the need of the day. Zafar shared an official statement from the cast and crew of `Tandav` on Twitter and reiterated that the team had no intentions to hurt or offend the sentiments of any caste, race, community or religion.&nbsp;<br />

We did not intend to hurt or offend the sentiments of any individual, caste, community, race, religion or religious beliefs or insult or outrage any institution, political party or person, living or dead," the statement read.&nbsp;<br />

'Tandav' controversy: Ali Abbas Zafar to implement changes in series amid backlash 

<p>It may be a little over 9 months but it appears a lifetime, a game-changer and life-transformer. The lockout-pandemic combine converted us suddenly into a nation of cynics, pessimists, philosophers &amp; thinkers re-connecting with long-forgotten, ignored, neglected primal truths that once graced our lives. Since entertainment in India means Bollywood &amp; Bollywood represents stars, this lockout unleashed a dramatic knockout by offering the movie-crazed Janta a startling new alternative, home-delivered: OTT platform! &nbsp;</p>

<p>This streaming space – Netflix, Hotstar, Amazon among tons of others – provided content that was planets away from the Bollywood model to present a cinema that defined truth, twenty-four frames per second. At first confused, reluctant and hesitant, large sections of traditional movie viewers soon embraced this platform with passion &amp; purpose to propel a boom in this space.</p>

<p>Today with the vaccine entering our lives and promising to deliver us from the twin nightmares, will the grandstanding of OTT vanish in the face of the old, much-loved, familiar Bollywood model? &nbsp;While the OTT menu, comprising gifted actors and superbly varied content are indeed great eye-openers, can they ever hope to compete with the mega-power &amp; star-draw of the Khans, Ajay, Akshay, Hrithik, Ranveer &amp; Ranbir or glam, sexy divas, Katrina, Deepika, Priyanka &amp; gang? Will the post-pandemic phase thus be the real litmus test in terms of transformation &amp; conversion and ask the vital question: Was OTT tolerated due to a lack of choice or did it genuinely represent &amp; introduce a new, exciting template and kick off a fascinating voyage of discovery?</p>

<p>“I think both will exist, after some initial glitches, in peaceful co-existence. &nbsp;Remember the initial anxieties of Bollywood when TV serials – Humlog, Buniyad, Khandan, Ados Pados – were rocking and sometimes even sent movie timings for a toss? It all evened out because ultimately STARS are STARS and actors [TV/OTT] despite their talent &amp; popularity are children of a lesser god! They can never hope to match the larger-than-life aura, glamour or charisma of the demi-gods &amp; goddesses!” he said.</p>

<p>Dabolkar however has a note of warning to both. He cautions the OTT platforms to not freak out on vile language [Tribhanga being the latest] and sex scenes, mostly designed for effect. &nbsp;Bollywood too, after the OTT invasion, needs to review their content-base, forget trash-with-flash and offer meaningful content. OTT has made one thing clear: Substance NOT star is the new name of the game.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Who better than the brilliant, respected, veteran film critic Saibal Chatterjee to wrap up the debate?</p>

<p>“Actually it’s a loaded question and there can be no easy answers simply because this situation is unprecedented in our lifetime.” he says.</p>

<p>Chatterjee believes that while the thrill of the big screen experience and the impact of the mega-stars are undeniable, OTT too has left indelible footprints in the minds of large sections of the traditional audience that one can’t wish away. &nbsp;Undoubtedly, OTT is here to stay and co-exist with the mainstream masala.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“However, my fear is different. OTT’s huge invasion into the homes, hearts and minds of millions hasn’t gone unnoticed by the hawk-eyed sharks of B-town &amp; Karan Johar – along with some other big production house biggies – are already eyeing the platform as the new, juicy target. KJO, it is rumoured, is already busy producing content for Netflix. Others will surely follow, desperate to grab their share of the pie. Will their brand of entertainment muddy the waters and Bollywood-ise the content profile [like Tandav] of this wonderfully creative, democratic space? By doing this, will they devalue, trivialise and corrupt this platform &amp; attract the wrong audience-base to view this space? Agreed, finally it’s the viewer’s choice, but won’t the likes of a Criminal Justice, Sir, Kagaz, Bnadish Bandits, Family Man, Undisclosed etc rubbing shoulders with Bollywood’s self-conscious and pretentiously arty, non-commercial products, look hopelessly out of sync? &nbsp;Mercifully, the digital divide in India is still humongous, so lots of areas will not be affected. However, it’s something to ponder over." he says.</p>

<p>Everything considered, 2021 could be a watershed year as the plot thickens!&nbsp;</p>

By doing this, will they devalue, trivialise and corrupt this platform & attract the wrong audience-base to view this space? Agreed, finally it’s the viewer’s choice, but won’t the likes of a Criminal Justice, Sir, Kagaz, Bnadish Bandits, Family Man, Undisclosed etc rubbing shoulders with Bollywood’s self-conscious and pretentiously arty, non-commercial products, look hopelessly out of sync? Mercifully, the digital divide in India is still humongous, so lots of areas will not be affected. However, it’s something to ponder over." he says. 'Drishyam 2': Mohanlal drops gripping teaser, movie to release on Amazon Prime

<p>Filmed in Mumbai, Ishwak likes to call the films “lockdown diaries”.</p>

<p>On his role, Ishwak said, “When I think of the character, it reminds me of moments where I was given hope, when I got strength from someone around me. Sometimes I was on the other side of the fence. My character is also about finding hope from within. Humans have an amazing foundation on which we can hold ourselves well enough to tackle anything. This is where it was going. It sent me down the memory lane.”&nbsp;</p>

While a life-changing event like pandemic hit us, the actor mentions that “another life changing event like Paatal Lok” came his way. “It gives me immense happiness to sum up 2020. <p>Borrowing some significant incidents from the lockdown that India witnessed earlier this year- six directors weave stories of friendship, of hope and of love that makes for an engaging watch.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In Tanishtha Chatterjee's 'Rat-A-Tat' a 60 plus woman is unhappy with the cacophony that has come with the lockdown. A noisy neighbour keeps banging plates and she wants the police to intervene. The police, of course, doesn't turn up but she soon finds herself reluctantly helping out a young girl who lives above. The two have contrasting personalities and are stuck together due to circumstances.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In Nikhil Advani's 'The Apartment', the utensil banging and 'Go, Corona go!' chant is there in the backdrop. Amid all the noise, a lonesome, dejected woman contemplates suicide due to her soured relationship with her husband. While she thinks she is ready to give up, an over-friendly neighbour keeps popping up at her doorstep to complain about leaking plants.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Then there is Raj and DK's 'Glitch' which is the only futuristic tale in the anthology where a hypochondriac is forced to move out of his cocoon for the love of a girl. Things are mostly virtual with the man ever so often hyperventilating about contracting the virus while the girl rolls her eyes in frustration.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The two most compelling and the best stories of the lot are by directors Avinash Arun and Nitya Mehra. Arun's film 'Vishaanu' has a migrant couple stuck in a dead township amid lockdown with limited resources. As they figure out ways to go back to their native village, they find solace in each other's company, their temporary shelter and TikTok videos.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mehra's 'Chand Mubarak' talks of two uncanny people forming a rare bond amid despair and gloom. She is an educated senior citizen who enjoys living a life of solitude and he is an auto driver, helping her run errands and earning quick bucks- yearning to be with his wife and children back in the village for Eid. It's a story that not just addresses the religious prejudices but promises of a better tomorrow.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Each story is about half an hour-long, but with deft writing and execution, so much is told in limited time. Each short film has its moment. 'Glitch' is the funniest with Gulshan Devaiah owning his character as a manic who is over-cautious. 'Rat-A-Tat' celebrates sisterhood in the most unusual way with credible performances by Lilette Dubey and Rinku Rajguru. They are chalk and cheese and yet make for a beautiful pair together. Richa Chadha, Sumeet Vyas and Ishwak Singh's 'The Apartment' highlights the importance of mental health in the middle of pandemic and emphasises on the importance of moving on at the right time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>'Unpaused' gives us the most heartwarming performances by Abhishek Banerjee and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan in 'Vishaanu'. The two talented actors transform themselves to play a couple who are stuck in limbo. And despite the overall sense of uncertainty and despair, the two find happiness in being together. The characters are not easy to play for the actors, but they deliver a compelling performance. I would've loved to watch a full-fledged feature based on these two characters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ratna Pathak Shah's and Shardul Bhardwaj's story too puts a smile on one's face. As a weary spinster who likes living a life of solitude, Shah's character eventually warms up to the friendly, kind Muslim auto driver and the two become friends while running errands.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The year 2020 will always be remembered for its collective gloom and uncertainty that gripped the world. 'Unpaused' tries to point at the human goodness, the resilience of every individual in such an unprecedented time. As we all rush to bid 2020 goodbye- and for all good reasons- 'Unpaused' makes us pause for a moment and look back at the brighter things that the year gave us.&nbsp;</p>

"I am very happy with the product and with the output. It`s going to be a good surprise for everyone who is used to seeing me do a particular type of role," she added.<br />

"OTT has opened up a world of possibilities for every technician, actually. When it comes to feature films, as an actor you have to do a certain kind of role that it`s widely and universally accepted. With OTT, one can really afford to take risks and experiment," said Samantha, who is married to Telugu superstar Nagarjuna`s son, actor Naga Chaitanya.<br />

<p>I have to admit, I had judged the first season of 'Mirzapur' a bit too soon. To me, the show looked like Amazon Prime's (the OTT platform on which the show is available) answer to Netflix'Sacred Games'. The profanities were the same, so was the bloodshed and the gore, but 'Mirzapur' presented the dark side of the heartland with such effectiveness that it grew on the viewers with its elaborate storyline.<br />
<br />
Its second season, which is now streaming on the OTT platform from October 23 onwards seems rooted in its detailed storytelling and much like its first season introduces myriad characters.</p>

<p>The first two episodes of the second season managed to establish the premise well. After the bloodshed in the final episode of season 1, where Munna killed Sweety and Bablu- the first episode picks up from a few days later where Munna is recuperating at home, under the watchful eyes of his father, Kaleen Bhaiya- the undisputed king of Mirzapur.</p>

<p>Having survived the massacre, Golu, Guddu and Dimpy are on the run. <p>With almost all the characters wielding guns and speaking dramatic lines at regular intervals, 'Mirzapur 2' sticks to its basic story on revenge and overrule.</p>

<p>Its cast, comprising mostly of the actors from the first season reprising their roles, remains one of the high point of the series along with its detailed screenplay. Pankaj Tripathi as Kaleen Bhaiya is calm, calculative and hence dangerous. Tripathi brings in the right kind of restraint to the character. Complementing his performance is actor Divyendu, who plays his ruthless, callous and evil son Munna. Divyendu's performance is the first season was a revelation for many and in the second the season, the actor seemed to have taken it a few notches higher.</p>

<p>There's also Ali Fazal and Shweta Tripathi-as Guddu and Golu- the nemesis of Kaleen Bhaiya who no one expected who evolve into such prominent characters in the story.</p>

Much like the first season, this one doesn't have too much subtext though from the first two episodes it appears that the women will get prominence in the story and may even take control over Mirzapur.&nbsp; That's been my impression from the first two episodes.</p>

<p>My only problem from the first two episodes were the endings. They did not make me curious about the next episode as it had in the first season where almost every episode was a cliff- hanger.</p>

The profanities were the same, so was the bloodshed and the gore, but 'Mirzapur' presented the dark side of the heartland with such effectiveness that it grew on the viewers with its elaborate storyline. Its second season, which is now streaming on the OTT platform from October 23 onwards seems rooted in its detailed storytelling and much like its first season introduces myriad characters. The first two episodes of the second season managed to establish the premise well. After the bloodshed in the final episode of season 1, where Munna killed Sweety and Bablu- the first episode picks up from a few days later where Munna is recuperating at home, under the watchful eyes of his father, Kaleen Bhaiya- the undisputed king of Mirzapur. Having survived the massacre, Golu, Guddu and Dimpy are on the run. They are battered physically but internally they all want to avenge the death of their loved ones. Complementing his performance is actor Divyendu, who plays his ruthless, callous and evil son Munna. Divyendu's performance is the first season was a revelation for many and in the second the season, the actor seemed to have taken it a few notches higher. There's also Ali Fazal and Shweta Tripathi-as Guddu and Golu- the nemesis of Kaleen Bhaiya who no one expected who evolve into such prominent characters in the story. Tripathi and Fazal bring an unusual amount of restraint to their characters and emote stunningly well in the emotional scenes. <p>The original film was released by Sony’s Columbia Pictures which starred Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Freddie Prinze Jr. It grossed $125 million worldwide.</p>

<p>The series will be written by Sara Goodman who is also executive producing the show. It will be in collaboration between Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures TV.&nbsp;</p>
