"We are very focused on the fact that we have a large pace of audience who watch us, customers who are prime members, and many who will be as we go forward and we have to entertain and delight them with our content. So, one of the basic things we look at is that we program for the country," said Amazon Prime Video Vice President Gaurav Gandhi.

Planning and producing a sequel is relatively simple, but matching the audience's expectations, as the previous installment did, is a difficult task, and here is where most of the sequels fail. After making an impressive OTT debut in 2020 with 'Breathe: Into the Shadow,' actor Abhishek Bachchan is back with the second season.

The second part is said to be more intense, dark, and engaging than the first, but is it able to live up to the hype? Or it's just merely another series with a chaotic plot? Let's find out.

What's the story?

The story picks up where it left off in the first season: Abhishek's character, Avinash Sabharwal, is in an asylum and getting treatment for his split personality disorder. The sensational Ravana case is closed, and everyone is very sure that Avinash's alter ego, J, is gone forever now, but the truth is that J still controls Avinash, and he's still planning to take revenge on all the people who have given trauma in his life in the past.

While everyone is in a state of relief that Avinash is behind bars, one day he successfully escapes with the help of his asylum mate, Victor, who is also dealing with childhood trauma. And together, they resume the killings and take revenge on behalf J. Crime branch inspector Kabir Sawant is calledback and takes on the charge to catch J, again. But will Kabir manage to save the people from getting killed, or will J and Victor walk out free, taking Avinash forever with them, away from his family, makes up the rest of the show.

More complex, less understandable

In comparison to the previous installment, which had the audience glued to the screen with multiple intriguing story twists, the second part fails to live up to those expectations. The eight-episode series is written in a highly complicated manner, with many unnecessary elements and twists added to the storyline, and that's what makes the show a tedious watch.

Despite sticking to the one plot, writers have tried to explore everything that they can in an eight-episode series but left everything unfinished.

In hope of making a show a gripping watch, makers have added unnecessary things that only exaggerate the show. The majority of the episodes are between 30 and 40 minutes lengthy, making it difficult to stay focused on the screen for so long.

Among the actors, Abhishek Bachchan's performance as Avinash and J is quite impressive. In the past two years, Bachchan has made a special place in the hearts of OTT viewers with his commendable performance in 'The Big Bull', 'Ludo', 'Bob Biswas' and 'Dasvi', and this one is just another addition to his list of good performances.

Amit Sadh as a cop, and Nithya Menen as Abha, have done a decent job but their character deserved more screen time. This season's new treat is Naveen Kasturia as Victor, who stands out with his performance.

Saiyami Kher's character and her connection to the main story are the most perplexing aspects of the series.

With all the new additions, little plot details of killings, and cleverly commenting on the shadow personality that everyone hides within themselves- the story might look fascinating and captivating on paper but appears chaotic at the execution level.

Directed by Mayank Sharma, the eight-episode series is full of emotions, drama, and killing, but all in all, this is not the edge-of-your-seat thriller that most of us were expecting, especially after watching the first two parts of the franchise.

'Breathe Into the Shadows 2' review: Abhishek Bachchan is flawless, the show isn't

There is a certain amount of stillness to Michael Grandage's film 'My Policeman'. Set in a grey, cold Brighton, the film opens with Gina McKee (Marion) arranging a spare room in her home for an impending guest as her husband Tom (Linus Roache) takes the dog out for a walk. Moments later, their house guest Pattrick( Rupert Everett ) arrives in a wheelchair.

There is a sense of uneasiness with the arrival of the new guest. Marion accuses Tom of not paying the courtesy visit to Pattrick in the other room while Tom expresses how their marriage has been disrupted thanks to the inclusion of a new member in the house. The three share uneasy dynamics but not much is shared in the initial few minutes of the film.

It is only as the film progresses and the story travels back in time does one realize that the young Tom (Harry Styles) a police officer in England had a roaring affair with Museum curator Patrick (David Dawson) at a time when homosexuality was still considered a crime in the country. To hide their affair, they befriended Marion (Emma Corrin), who was besotted by the dashing, good-looking Tom.

Tom taught Marrion to swim, and took her to the museum where Patrrick introduced her to renowned artists. Marrion, on her part, taught Tom to appreciate art and even read books. While the two grow fond of each other, Pattrick played the third wheel. Even when the two get married, Pattrick is the best man appointed to give the speech. He even turns up the day after the wedding at their cottage to cook them a wedding meal. All seems okay for Marrion until she witnesses her husband embracing Pattrick at a nearby cottage. She is devastated but the moment is also underplayed much like every other emotion in Grandage's film. And that perhaps is the biggest flaw of 'My Policeman'.

Based on a 2012 novel of the same name by Bethan Roberts, the film is pitched as a gay love-story set in the 1950s where the two men selfishly use the woman for their own convenience. It's not a tragic story, neither is it a story of redemption or even revenge and perhaps the film doesn't really know what genre it wants to fit in. With a nonlinear narrative and six actors playing three central characters, the screenplay is slightly chaotic.

'My Policeman' showcases Harry Styles, a new entrant to acting, in all his glory. He is a good-looking strapping man, who is innocent and charming. So charming that a man and a woman fall deeply in love with him. Styles highlights Tom's innocence and naivety well making the character very charming. Corrin meanwhile also brings in a sense of vulnerability to her character while David Dawson plays the cool, slightly mean Pattrick with perfection. The older actors are however limited due to a properly written script even though Grint shines as the angsty paralytic man in a few scenes.

There have been an ample amount of films depicting same-sex love stories in the west- ranging from tragic to comedic. 'My Policeman' unfortunately doesn't offer anything new nor does it leave a lasting impact or stir you deeply. It only provides good performances from the lead cast and showcases Styles as the next big thing in Hollywood.

Popular stand-up comedy series 'Comicstaan Season 3' has been making ripples ever since it dropped on OTT platform Amazon Prime Video last Friday. 'The Boys' season 4 to begin filming sooner than you'd expect

If you thought Amazon Prime Video's superhero TV series 'The Boys' could not outdo itself after that astonishingly fun and action-packed sixth episode of its third season, titled "Herogasm"... you would be right. The penultimate episode of the season, titled "Here Comes a Candle to Light You to Bed", does not quite reach those heights, but it is still a good one-hour entertainment in its own right, featuring huge reveals, action, and important character moments. It also serves as a fine setup for the finale.

First, a quick recap. In "Herogasm", the highlight was the psychopathic leader of the Seven, Homelander (Anthony Starr), learning that he has finally met his match in Soldier Boy, the psychopathic, and now PTSD-suffering, leader of now-defunct Payback, Vought's premiere superhero team before the Seven.

But before Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), and his sidekicks Butcher (Karl Urban) and Hughie (Jack Quaid), temporarily empowered by Temp V, could kill Homelander, he managed to escape. He does have an inkling now that he is no longer as immortal as he thought he was.

In the seventh episode, we go deep into Butcher's past, which helps explain why he is the way he is. Although Butcher and Homelander are sworn enemies, they also share several qualities between them. For instance, both can charm their way through anything, are tyrannical towards their underlings, and have egos the size of the Empire State Building. A particular flashback in "Here Comes a Candle to Light You to Bed" explains, and frankly fleshes out, the character of Butcher.

Butcher, Hughie team up with Soldier Boy to find Mindstorm, the latter's former teammate at Payback. As his name describes, he can mess up a person's mind if they make eye contact with him. Butcher does, and his consciousness goes into a spiral. He revisits the memories of his family -- his absent mother, his abusive father, and his younger brother Lenny whom he failed. The scene is long but turns Butcher from a man with an extremely flexible sense of morality and casually violent nature to a tragic anti-hero. What he does next with Hughie is all the more emotional and hurtful because of what we know.

We learn that it was Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell), with the blessing of Stan Edgar (Giancarlo Esposito), who orchestrated the downfall of Soldier Boy and his capture by the Russians. The whole thing is told through cute little animated characters (with a sprinkle of gore, of course -- this is 'The Boys' after all), which felt like an odd choice, but worked in the end as a nice bit of fun, subtle exposition.

The storyline of Deep (Chace Crawford), though, remains one of the failings of the show this season as it does not seem to be leading to anything interesting, and the purpose appears to be just comic relief. But the joke (that Deep is sexually interested in aquatic animals) has honestly worn pretty thin. It is a nitpicky criticism, and that is because the show is otherwise so well-written and carefully structured that minor cracks in the edifice seem all the more noticeable.

'The Boys' season 3 arrives next Friday.

Also Read: 'The Boys' season 4 to begin filming sooner than you'd expect But before Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), and his sidekicks Butcher (Karl Urban) and Hughie (Jack Quaid), temporarily empowered by Temp V, could kill Homelander, he managed to escape.

'The Boys' Season 3 Episode 7 review: A corker of an episode sets up an exciting finale

The wait to see 'The Terminal List' is just a week away as Amazon Prime Video's action thriller is all set to release on July 1, 2022. With the date fast approaching, excitement levels among Chris Pratt fans is absolutely sky high. The good news doesn’t just end here as David DiGilio, the head writer of the series, has revealed that 'The Terminal List' may have more seasons and have plans to extend it for a long-term franchise.

David DiGilio along with Director Antoine Fuqua and Jack Carr spilled the beans on the extension of 'The Terminal List'. They're looking forward to expanding the series based on Carr's books and have already begun the ideation process. “Yeah, we have a roadmap for each season ahead of us. The only problem is this man writes one book per year, and it takes us a lot longer to make a show,” exclaimed DiGilio.

However, the final decision to extend 'The Terminal List' rests with Amazon Prime Video. Sharing his views, Fuqua said, “That's the goal. We certainly went into it with that big picture of wanting to do that. So, if we get blessed and [are] successful, Amazon will do it again.”

'The Terminal List' is an action thriller that sees Chris Pratt as a former Navy SEAL, James Reece, in the lead role. Reece is taken by shock after his platoon is trapped in an unforeseen situation. With self-doubt and conflicting memories, Reece returns home only to discover a sinister plot by dark forces against him. Gathering the courage he can, Reece decides to embark on a journey to save himself and his loved ones.

Based on Jack Carr's novel, 'The Terminal List' stars Taylor Kitsch, Constance Wu, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Riley Keough, and Patrick Schwarzenegger in pivotal roles. It will be available on Amazon Prime Video from July 1 in multiple languages like English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.

Amazon Prime's new slate of movies, shows: From Shahid Kapoor's 'Farzi' to 'Mirzapur' & more

A film by the Iranian genius Asghar Farhadi is a joy forever? Well, not quite, considering his subtle but brutal dramatic conflicts never end in any semblance of happiness ever after. His characters are deeply flawed. But they are also strong brave creatures of providence determined to not fall through the crack of a flawed socio-political system.

In all his masterpieces Farhadi portrays a padlocked society with characters leading seemingly normal lives with abnormal conflicts(the disappearance of a woman during a family vacation in About Elly, the aftermath of a divorce in 'The Past', an assault by a mysterious assailant 'The Salesman').

The conflict point in 'A Hero' is, in my opinion, stronger more persuasive in all of Farhadi’s previous films. There is a growing sense of moral idealism eroded by an ethical ambivalence that knocks off the lid at the bottom of this tale, leaving us staring into a dangerous abyss.

The casting is as usual, impeccable. Amir Jadidi as Rahim the protagonist is a hero in the truest most classic sense of the term. He has been put into a debt prison in Iran (far less harsh than the normal prisons) for his failure to repay a debt. To compound Rahim’s troubles, his creditor Bahram (Mohsen Tanabandeh) has a familial axe to grind with Rahim.

In this way a seemingly simple morality tale about an unknowing prisoner who desperately wants to return to his normal life spirals into a game of snakes and ladders where the stakes are nothing short of death or freedom; take your pique.

There is an abundance of abandoned anger in the narrative. In Amir Jadidi’s Rahim, one can see the herculean efforts that have gone into refraining from lashing out at a social order that incites individuals’ lives to be ruined through persecution. Rahim emerges from prison for two days, Mets his girlfriend Farkhondeh(Sahar Goldoost) an incredibly supportive girlfriend who will stop at nothing to get her man out of his troubles.

What follows is a kind of tender masquerade of pride and prejudice with Rahim acquiring the status of a local hero, what with he had returned a bag of gold coins to its rightful owner rather than using the money to pay off his debts.

There are knotted tensions in nearly every episode of this tragic drama, defined by a smothered fury against social injustice. The plot is propelled not only by the admittedly considerable dramatic tension but more by the frailties and failings of humankind. Rahim for all his goodness of intention is felled by his fatal flaws. He is a wonderful boyfriend and a fantastic father—and there is a touching father-son bonding built into the plot—but he is also a bit of a mismanager in life. Rahim has messed up big time with his finances.

Director Asghar Farhadi is not in the mood to let his hero off the hook. He never is. Life is never as simple in an Asghar Farhadi film as it seems.

For fans of the cricketing franchise that kicked off in 2017, 'Inside Edge' is still likely to hold some interest, no ifs and ‘bats’ about it.

Batting and betting remain the series’ patent preoccupations. The characters, all 155 of them(no I wasn’t counting, just guessing) remain locked in a self-serving vault where they can only see the world as a place to mint money, and more money. Sporting ethics be damned.

The ten episodes of Season 3 have their high points. But the low points sadly exceed the high. There are many loose ends in the plot: for example, why is Richa Chadha(who gets top billing) missing in the first 5 episodes? Even after she makes a belated entry her character Zarina Mehta seems uncertain about her presence and her future. Flashbacks of her mother’s humiliation as a junior artiste are too perfunctory to project an even remotely rounded portrait. The same is true of the other principal characters. They all seem to have a back story that doesn’t quite justify let alone rationalize their slithering moves as over-ambitious go-getters.

The age-old rivalry between the stepbrothers played by Amir Bashir and Vivek Oberoi(both in brilliant form) is given some sort of centrality in the plot. Nonetheless the storytelling this time is fatally unanchored.

The characters who (over)populate the plot are either ill-formed or ill-informed or both. Sapna Pabbi as Bashir’s daughter Mantra frantically trying to legalize betting cuts a particularly sorry figure especially when pitched against a “professional” anti-establishment journalist who at one point, is shown masturbating to Mantra’s video image. I am not too sure what that is supposed to signify? That he wants to f**k her over not only on camera but in person too?

Too many characters here are either not sure of their actions or just too sketchily drawn to be convincing in their manipulative moves. Either way, the storytelling suffers grievously for the want of credible characters and finally falls fatally to the floor writhing on the ground helplessly.

Not all of it is in vain. Some characters in spite of hazy lazy writing, succeed in leaving a positive impact largely because of good performances. Amit Sial as a blunt-speaking off-spinner is a showstopper. Siddhant Gupta’s Imaad, a privileged Kashmiri batsman who is brought into the Indian cricket team from the backdoor, has three levels of discrimination(as a Muslim, Kashmiri and a figure of favouritism) to grapple with.

Imaad’s struggle appears real. As does Akshay Oberoi’s closeted gay captain of the team suffering the tireless taunts of his uncloseted partner(Ankur Rathee). And yes, Sayani Gupta is excellent as a daughter trying to live down down a cricketing scandal that killed her father. Tanuj Virwani as her brother is just not given any significant footage to chew on.

The plot sprawls indolently over ten inconsistent episodes. Some of this is really good stuff with dialogues that are barbed and inconsistent. But on the other hand, much of this feels like a spillover of the earlier seasons. The characters don’t grow. They groan dangerously close to the edge of irrelevance.

And now, the actor has spoken to The Times of India about his role and how Fab G has allowed him to express his authentic self on camera.

"I will say that this 'Cinderella' is one for the new millennium. It is taking the old fairy tale of Cinderella, which has its problematic moments in modern times, and sort of making it relevant for today. It's very empowering for women. It's about women being empowered, women being businesswomen, running their own lives, making their own choices and decisions, not based on whether they have a man or not. So I think that's awesome. It's very inclusive, it's very diverse and one of the big changes is with the fairy godmother aka the Fab G which is played by yours truly. It's a new interpretation of what a fairy god person can be. It's magical and magic has no gender. And I get to be that spirit, this time around," Billy reportedly said.

When asked how did it feel to play the free-spirited Fab G, Billy said it was liberating for him on a personal level. "It's really exciting for me because on a personal level as an out queer black actor in this business, it hasn't always been a welcoming space to be who I am naturally. There's always a talk about authenticity and just simply being yourself and my response to that has always been that its easy to be who you are when what you are is what's popular. So, what do you do when who you are is not popular? When who you are is not wanted. So, to choose myself so many years ago, to choose that thing that seemingly was my liability, and was my liability for a long time, until it wasn't. And now it's not. 'Cinderella' is an example of the reward for living in one's truth," shared the actor.

Whether inclusion and modernization of legends and fairytales—an all-Black ‘Anne Boleyn’ was a bouncer that landed right—is fad, is moot. When the news of Billy Porter and Camila Cabello (a Hispanic belle) starring in Kay Cannon’s (Pitch Perfect franchise) latest rendition of Cinderella broke (and there have been many, across genres), we knew we were in for a surprise. And surprise it is! Perhaps it is the fact that we are seeing this 21st century musical retelling of the tale through the eyes of a woman, or the current setting demanded one, that we get to witness the protagonist (and not a heroine) shedding light on patriarchal hangover. And smashing it hard against the wall: one empowering song, sequence at a time.

In the opening shot itself, we are ushered into the world of a mouthy, headstrong Cinderella working her nights away trying to be a dressmaker. Soon after, the whole charade—Cannon, quietly aptly, keeps the key components of the story intact—ensues, and even before the film clocks interval, we are introduced to a laid-back, adventure-seeking Prince Robert (Nicholas Galitzine).Taking a major deviation from the beat-up route, it is Princess Gwen (Tallulah Greive) now who is a fitting succession to King Rowan’s crown (played by the marvelous Pierce Brosnan). But, Lord forbid, a woman takes the Royal line ahead!

Tactfully, Cannon juxtaposes traditional values against liberal ways of the modern world without making her social commentary an overbearing watch for her viewers. Of course, Camila Cabello being a singer made of fine fabric elevates the musical aspect of ‘Cinderella’—our personal favourites; ‘Am I Wrong?’, ‘Million To One’—and the usage of urban lingo (‘dude!’, ‘poppin’’ and ‘cray’, among many others) serves as an undertone to the overall feel of the narrative: young, bold and ground-breaking in its own right.

‘Cinderella’ scoops up the dated mindset its medieval counterpart is notorious for, and throws it out the window. As for Camila Cabello, whenever there’s a listicle on crooners who can act, “You will remember her name!”

While Raji is being appreciated by one and all, prep for the role had come with its fair share of challenges. “I was given the role of a trained fighter with not much dialogue. So I had to make sure that I physically looked the part even though I am small. The body language and the physicality of the character was something I really worked on. As for OTT platforms--her 'The Family Man 2' released in Amazon Prime Video--the actor feels it has opened new doors for artists. “OTT has been a really welcome change not just for actors but also for technicians.
The 1999 Kargil war remains one of the most important political events in the subcontinent. Nearly two decades later, the memories of the war which was widely reported on TV and print media, remains fresh for a great number of people. One of the most iconic interviews of that time was when journalist Barkha Dutt had interviewed a young Captain Vikram Batra right after he and his men recaptured a crucial peak in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir from the Pakistani army. Dharma Productions latest 'Shershaah' attempts to narrate the story of the braveheart, whose war cry 'Ye Dil Mange More' left an indelible impact on the country during the war.

Featuring Sidharth Malhotra as Captain Vikram Batra, the film narrates the slain martyr's life and his passion to join the army right from a young age. Directed by Vishnu Vardhan, a greater part of the film captures the war and how the Indian army strategised to win pack crucial peaks from the Pakistani army.

Now, the Kargil war has been a topic for many Bollywood films before. Each trying to narrate the humane side of the soldier's life amid the war. 'Shershaah' is no different. Malhotra plays a rather impulsive, over-enthusiastic young man who harbours dreams of becoming an Army officer right from an early age. We are told that even as a child Vikram Batra was someone a daredevil of sorts who would pick a fight with boys double his size and age.

The film's narrative keeps going back and forth and it shows Batra's life before joining the army, his relationship with his classmate Dimple (Kiara Advani) and their subsequent years of being together before Kargil.

Written by Sandeep Srivastav, the film adapts the usual tropes of a war film. There are several cliches and the narrative is sluggish and very predictable. I almost second-guessed a few scenes including the introductory scene of Kiara Advani's character. One could also predict which character would die next because of the predictability in dialogues and scenes. Srivastav never delves too deep with his writing as a result, 'Shershaah' - despite being a war film- is easy on the eyes and fails to stir you emotionally.

There is a lot of material available online on Captain Vikram Batra. Over the years, the Batra has gained hero status for his bravery and his family and friends have also been forthcoming with anecdotes on him. And 'Shershaah' just uses those materials in the film. It doesn't provide anything extra about the Captain's life. It only focusses on the war and how Batra's bravery led to recapturing of important peaks. The film doesn't mention anything on his IMA training days, or his equation with his twin brother- even though he is the narrator of the film. If one is making a biopic on a known figure, it is important to dig deeper and provide insights that is not commonly known. But 'Shershaah' mostly sticks to common knowledge.

Among the actors, Sidharth Malhotra delivers an earnest performance. Sadly, the lazy writing doesn't let Malhotra excel in a role that could have easily been iconic in the coming years. A lot of the sequences of the film also seem to give the audience a sense of deja vu- as it seems to be borrowed from other similar films. Malhotra is ably supported by Shiv Pandit who plays a fellow Captain in the army. With limited screen time, Pandit manages to create an impression.

Malhotra and Advani also share a crackling chemistry. Advani has by now mastered the role of playing a Sikh woman in films. In film after film, the actress is cast in similar characters and even though she has the potential to stand out, directors and filmmakers never really tap it.

Ultimately 'Shershaah' is a very predictable film. It doesn't offer anything that has not been shown earlier on screen. Perhaps the film comes a few years too late - and at a time when Batra's life and valour has been widely known and discussed.
