New Zealand beat Afghanistan by 149 runs at Cricket World Cup

New Zealand have made four wins out of four at the World Cup with a crushing 149-run victory in Chennai. Afghanistan were bowled out for just 139 and were sloppy in the field. 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore believes the Afghans paid for their mistakes in their field.

An earth-shattering spell of earthquakes in Afghanistan has forced residents to move to makeshift tents, with office buildings and mosques being deserted as people pray and plead to&nbsp;God for stopping the destruction.

Fearing the recurrence of natural disasters that have killed at least 1300 people in the country in recent days, people have resorted to living in the open.

According to health officials in the Taliban-ruled country, people have been suffering from trauma after the earthquakes took place.

“As most of the victims of the earthquake most likely have injuries, all the residents of Herat city are mentally affected,” said Qadim Muhammadi, a senior doctor in Herat’s provincial hospital.

Dozens of Herat citizens go to the hospital to get treatment because of anxiety and trauma, reported Tolo News.

The WHO has also acknowledged the widespread fear, with Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus saying that the Herat province had essentially become a “tent city.”

“Herat city has become a tent city, families are sleeping in open spaces in parks, in small tents, as they are afraid to be inside because of aftershocks and more earthquakes. The WHO Afghanistan team is supporting partners to set up health tents where people can get health care services,” he said.

It may have taken 10 days but the ODI World Cup in India has its first 'upset' - one that will be cherished by the whole of Afghanistan for years to come, especially in light of recent devastating events. Afghanistan, playing a near-perfect game, pinned defending champions England on the mat to win the contest by 69 runs in front of a vociferous Afghan-supporting crowd gathered at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Fine bowling performances from Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan ensured that England never really got a whiff of victory, chasing a challenging target of 285. Fazalhaq Farooqi struck first upfront when he trapped Jonny Bairstow in front of the stumps before Mujeeb weaved his magic to send danger man Joe Root (11) back to the hut. Harry Brook (66), who parachuted into the World Cup squad at the eleventh hour, was the sole man who fought against the Afghan attack but could not make it count as he succumbed under pressure as well. Mujeeb, brought in for a new spell, extracted some turn from the pitch and got the Englishman's outside edge which was snaffled up with utmost glee by Ikram, behind the sticks. For England, it was a continuation of poor planning, inability to adapt to the wicket and deviating from the strategy that had brought them great success over the last few years. The champions repeated the mistakes of the first match against New Zealand where they played timidly and were made to eat the humble pie. While most might term it an 'upset', it feels a disservice to Afghanistan to dub their victory one - for they had been knocking on the door to produce such a performance against one of the top teams for some time. Even India in the previous game had to bring their A-game to get over the line, though the scoreboard might suggest otherwise. Afghanistan's flying start, collapse and rebuild Asked to bat first on a rather belter of a Delhi pitch, Afghanistan batters were off the block in a flying manner. Both English opening bowlers, Reece Topley and Chris Woakes failed to hit their mark and were duly punished by the pair of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. The former was particularly severe as he manoeuvred the white ball around the turf with a composed yet deadly technique. Consequently, Afghanistan raced to 79 in the first 10 overs and looked unstoppable for a big score. Things went downhill quite quickly though. Ibrahim Zadran was the first to go and Rahmat Shah didn't last long. Gurbaz, who was looking so good, was tragically run out the very next ball for 80. The wickets continued to fall as Afghanistan slumped from 114/0 to 190/6 in no time. Adil Rashid, Joe Root and Liam Livingstone - all three English spinners spun a web around the Afghan batters and reaped rich dividends for it. Just when it looked like Afghanistan's innings might come to a tame end, Ikram Alikhil put his hand up and stitched a little partnership with Rashid Khan to take his team to a respectable total of 284, which, in hindsight, proved to be enough. The defeat leaves England to do some intense soul-searching as the side looks devoid of ideas and aggression on the field - two tenets which dictated their maverick 2019 World Cup campaign. Morning news brief: US sends second aircraft carrier, fresh quake in Afghanistan, and more

Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott will try to plot the downfall of&nbsp;England&nbsp;when his current side meets his former team in a World Cup match in New Delhi on Sunday.

And yet it was only because of the illness of another fellow former&nbsp;England&nbsp;batsman in Graham Thorpe that he found himself in charge of Afghanistan at all, taking over in July last year for a Twenty20 tour of Ireland ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia.

The 42-year-old Trott, who played over 200 international matches, worked as a batting coach for the&nbsp;England&nbsp;team on their tour of India in 2021.

For all their undoubted talent in the T20 format, where spinner Rashid Khan is a globe-trotting star of the franchise circuit, Afghanistan have struggled in the 50-over game.

Convincing defeats by Bangladesh and India in their opening two games of this World Cup mean Afghanistan have now lost 14 successive matches in the tournament -- a run stretching back to their lone win, against Scotland, in 2015.

A lack of runs, for all Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai scored fifties in an eight-wicket reverse against India last time out, has been at the heart of Afghanistan's ODI struggles.

In Trott they have a coach who as a batsman was renowned for his concentration and an attention to detail exemplified by his deliberate marking of guard.

Born in Cape Town to a British father and South African mother, Trott played for South Africa youth sides from Under-15 to Under-19 level.

But he then took advantage of his British passport and his relationship with Bob Woolmer, who coached both South Africa and Warwickshire, to arrange a trial with the English county.

Having established himself at the Midlands club, Trott enjoyed a spectacular entry into Test cricket with a hundred on debut in a 2009 Ashes-deciding win against Australia at The Oval.

It was the start of a fine&nbsp;England&nbsp;career that yielded nearly 4,000 runs, including nine hundreds, in 52 Tests at an average of 44.08.

<h2>'Get pigeon-holed'</h2>

Yet having been dubbed a "rock" by Andy Flower, the then&nbsp;England&nbsp;coach, Trott was forced to make an abrupt exit from the 2013/14 Ashes tour of Australia with a stress-related illness having struggled against the short ball.

Trott eventually battled back to regain his&nbsp;England&nbsp;place for a 2015 series in the West Indies.

But asked to open the batting, he reached double-figures only once in six innings and suffered three ducks, with Trott announcing his international retirement at the end of the tour before bowing out with Warwickshire in 2018.

His own, highly-publicised, difficulties made some wonder how Trott would cope with the increased demands of being in charge of a national side.

But Trott, still to set foot in Afghanistan more than 14 months since his appointment -- the team don't play matches on home soil on security grounds, with the country having reverted to Taliban control in 2021 -- told the Guardian last week: "I enjoy the pressure of making decisions.

"I think sometimes if you're just a specialist coach, a batting coach or a bowling coach, you sort of get pigeon-holed a little bit. I think it's nice to oversee things."

That position, however, comes with added responsibility, as Trott discovered during a heart-breaking finish to Afghanistan's Asia Cup campaign last month.

Needing to overhaul a target of 292 in 37.1 overs to oust Sri Lanka on net run-rate, Afghanistan fell agonisingly short as Mujeeb Ur Rahman holed out with three needed from the first ball of the 38th over.

They could still have qualified by reaching 295 within 37.4 overs but appeared unaware of that possibility as last man Fazalhaq Farooqi blocked two deliveries before being dismissed attempting another defensive shot with six needed to go through.

"I'm gutted about it," recalled Trott. "As a head coach the responsibility stays with you.&nbsp;

"You're in charge, you're the guy where the buck stops. So that's hard to take."

United States Geological Survey has reported that a fresh, 6.3 magnitude earthquake has hit northwest of Herat city.&nbsp;The fresh earthquake in Afghanistan has come on the heels of another one that killed thousands in the country.

The fresh quake hit at 0336 GMT, 33 kilometres (20 miles) from the city.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) has said that magnitude of the earthquake was 6.5. The ESMC said that the quake was at a depth of 10 km.

Afghanistan was jolted by another magnitude 6.3 quake on October 7. Eight powerful aftershocks hit the same part of Herat. The quake toppled swathes of rural homes and killed over 1000 people and wounded hundreds more.

According to UNICEF, more than 90 per cent of those killed in these earthquakes were women and children.

The United Nations said more than 12,000 people were affected by the tremors.

The Taliban regime has struggled to provide shelter to people on large scale. International aid has largely dried up after the US-led coalition left Afghanistan in 2021.

Homes in rural Afghanistan are mostly made of mud and built around wooden support poles. There is little in the way of steel or concrete reinforcements.

Multi-generational extended families generally live under the same roof, meaning serious earthquakes can devastate communities.&nbsp;

Fresh earthquake hits Afghanistan, tremors of magnitude 6.3 felt near Herat: USGS

Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range. More than 90% of the people killed by a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in western Afghanistan last weekend were women and children, U.N. officials reported. This crisis comes at a time when 15 million people – a third of the population of the country – do not know where their next meal will come from. The World Food Programme needs 400 million dollars in funding to deliver food to remote locations and help millions of the most vulnerable people. As Winter approaches – rebuilding houses in time will be an uphill ask. Can Afghanistan be helped?

About 300 of the earthquake victims were buried in a mass funeral ceremony on Monday (Oct 9) in rural western Afghanistan. The earthquake killed more than 2,000 people two days ago.&nbsp;

"I thought I must have been dreaming, all the places were razed," said 30-year-old Ismail from Siah Ab village. He was quoted by AFP.

&nbsp;"No one is left."&nbsp;

Nayeb Rafi, a&nbsp;village, was once home to some 2000 families. But now, no building has been left standing there. There are piles of broken mud bricks everywhere.

"There are families who don't have anyone left alive," said 50-year-old Ali Mohammad. "No one is left, not a woman nor a child, no one."&nbsp;

"One family had twenty members buried in the rubble," he said, adding that only two members of the family survived because they happened to be out of the home.&nbsp;

According to the United Nations, "100 per cent" of homes in 11 villages in the rural Zenda Jan district were destroyed. The district is 30 kilometres northwest of Herat city.

Taliban regime's disaster management ministry spokesman Mullah Janan Sayeq said "people are trying to search and get their family out of debris".&nbsp;

Reports from the field described "a very bad situation", he told a news conference in the capital.&nbsp;

The disaster ministry said on Sunday that 2053 people had died.

&nbsp;"We can't give exact numbers for dead and wounded as it is in flux," Sayeq said Monday.&nbsp;

According to a World Health Organization estimate, more than 11,000 people were affected from 1655 families.

Aid trickled in Monday on trucks packed with food and blankets, and blue tents began to pop up among the ruins.&nbsp;

As winter draws in, providing shelter for residents will be a major challenge for Afghanistan's Taliban government, which seized power in August 2021 and has fractious relations with international aid organisations.&nbsp;

Afghanistan quake victims buried in a mass funeral near Herat

Hosts India will continue their quest for the world cup title as they take on Afghanistan in their second match of the tournament in New Delhi. WION Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo tells us what to expect from the pitch at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, which saw a run-fest in the match between South Africa and Sri Lanka.

ICC World Cup 2023: Ground report from the Arun Jaitley Stadium

World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday (Oct 9) that most of the victims of the Afghanistan earthquake were women and children. The agency said that women and children make up two-thirds of the victims. According to the Taliban regime, at least 2400 people were killed and over 2000 were injured when an earthquake hit the country on Saturday (Oct 7). The Afghanistan earthquake was one of the deadliest this year.

"The earthquake happened around 11 in the morning, when men were out of the houses, so majority of those who are injured and died are women and children who were inside the houses at the time," WHO's Dr Alaa AbouZeid told Reuters in a video interview.

"Two-thirds of those with severe injuries who are admitted in the hospital I have seen yesterday are children and women," he said, referring to his time in Herat following the quake.

AbouZeid said that the effort to finance humanitarian operations remained critical since global funding has shifted away from Afghanistan after the US-led coalition's exit and the Taliban's return to power.

The number of children in hospital in critical condition was 'devastating'.

"I have seen a child like 3-4 months old with head trauma, due to the earthquake," he said.

He said that trauma to the head may cause long-lasting health effects or even disabilities. The WHO was mindful of the help the families would need in the long term.

"I have seen a child like 3-4 months old with head trauma, due to the earthquake," said AbouZeid.

The healthcare system in Afghanistan has been largely reliant on foreign aid. It is especially cash-strapped after the US&nbsp;exit. The international assistance, once the backbone of the economy, has halted for the most part.

In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, the UN's humanitarian office announced USD 15 million worth of assistance but material support has come from very few countries.
